Banchero, Magic win as Hornets struggle from foul line
"Paulo banquero and Wendell Carter junior each had double doubles in the magics, one 19 one 13 win over the hornets. Bon Carroll finished with 22 points and ten rebounds. Carter added 20 points and 12 boards to help Orlando finish three in one on its road trip. I think we did a really good job of just locking the entire scalp and understanding what we had to do to get the W hornets guard LaMelo Ball scored 26 of his 33 points in the second half and hit 6 three pointers, but Charlotte shot a miserable one for 9 from the line in the fourth quarter while Orlando was 13 of 15. "Around not that interested in talking about, but he's on the list. I have two segments of my list. One segment is tank team, guys. Guys who should be available, right? Like, no, just like guys, that's where you gotta start. That's why boyan Bogdanovich is high on my list. Teams that are just not interested in winning this year and have a player who fits snugly in that four spot, whatever. Then I have a list of goes wrong. So guys who are on teams with high ambitions where if you get to the trade deadline, someone's injured, something goes hey, why or whatever, I'm making a call. John Collins is high on that list. I don't think a lot of people would mention him because of the 8 and thing, oh, John Collins, he's a screen and dive guy, well, but I think for some players, you're overthinking that 8 and fit because their talent is their talent. He's on my list, Chris hearing. I thought I would be all sneaky with John Collins. Let's be very clear. Not happening right now. The hawks are not trading John Collins. John Collins is Brooke Lopez two. He's never gonna get traded by the hawks apparently. He's always gonna be on the hawks despite being in trade rumors all the time, like brook Lopez on the nets. So let's be clear hawks fans not suggesting it. I'm just saying, if we get 40 games into the season and it's not going right and there's a godfather offer on the table. Chris herring, I like where I like where your head's at. He makes a lot of sense for exactly those reasons we're laying out. You mentioned boyan, who I think makes a lot of sense for a lot of teams. So I won't belabor that, but obviously someone that can get to the basket, someone that can handle the ball a little bit, obviously you don't want him handling it as much as you remember a couple of years ago when the pacers were missing everybody and all the deep one everyone and he had to handle the ball like primarily. You don't ever want that, especially now there's a little bit older, but someone that could give you more 3.2 could give you more spacing and handle the ball when needed. He would make sense. The other guy I have and I don't even know that they would put him up, but I do wonder like they do have a glut of guys on this team now and they've got a lot of young players that all are promising Wendell Carter junior is a name and I don't think that that's one that would pry free after he had a really, really nice season, but man, like I would like to have him. If I'm a team like the suns and defensively, I would wonder a little bit like, can you play him a whole lot next to ayton Crowder is unusual in that way where he can defend a lot of versatile threes and smaller fours and stuff like that. Wendell Carter is not someone that I would want to have on small forwards a whole lot. But man, he added something to his game last year. He was finally healthy to some extent last year. He stretched out his perimeter game a little bit. He's a pretty good passer, although I think sometimes he's kind of been theorized as like a much better person than what he is. And I kind of feel like you saw hints of what he could be last year and if you're putting him on a good team where he doesn't have to do all that much. He could probably shine even a little bit more. So he's just an interesting name to me. I kind of start with those three boyan is another one that I had kind of on my list a little bit. But I was kind of most intrigued by the three I laid out. Wendell Carter is actually a little too center ish for me in terms of his offensive game. That makes sense. He's not on my list. And to be clear, in a lot of these trades, I mean Crowder plus Sarge is the package or shamit plus Sarge, but a lot of them, I think Crowder would have to be involved. I don't think cam Johnson, the sons don't want to trade cam Johnson, obviously that would change depending on the player involved, but you also have to start thinking like, is this guy an upgrade over Crowder? Who's pretty good? I like winning follows J Crowder. J car is a good tough player to kind of player every team needs. And if he is traded, culture fits too. If he is ever traded, I bet he's going to find his way to another winning team and be a big minute player on that team. Boyan and Collins are on my list in different segments of the list. I got somewhat wild with my trade ideas. So a lot of the guys on the tank teams that should be available are all guards. And I just don't think it fits. So like you're Gary Harris Terrence Ross Alec Burks, the Utah guards. Even Eric Gordon, who the sons have been linked to a lot over the years at a sort of smaller price than we're talking about. It's fine. He helps you. He's a bulldog. He's got experience guarding up a position defensively he's tough. He's a little fire hydrant. You know, eh, it's kind of standing in place. A lot of other names on my list are kind of standing in place list. Like what I call about Josh Hart, if the blazer season goes, haywire, sure, but is that changing my life? Brandon Clark changing my life with the grizzly season, goes haywire. He's Kelvin Johnson changing my life as the power forward on a tank team. He is poison pill, but that's the name I kind of like because he's young, he's got upside. So changing my life maybe, maybe not, I don't know. Kyle Kuzma, changing my life. Kyle Kuzma had a really good year last year for the wizards. He did. It's a name I would look at a little bit if I were Phoenix. I'd never be interested in dort who can probably play the four. Luke and Stuart could probably defend the 6. If there were a 6, he could defend the 6. He's that tough and strong. Is that changing my life though? How much is his contract for because I remember I just remember the total number on it was meant to 1566. It was a big contract. Yeah, so my answer to those is all just kind of feels like running a place a little bit. Which brings me back to although the Kuzma when I kind of like, Julius Randle, too much money, no, it's a no for me if I'm Phoenix. It's a no. Too much money, too many questions about the jump shooting. Which brings me back to the names I've mentioned plus, Jeremy grant, if again, if, if, if the Portland season goes haywire, Harrison Barnes, always. Perfect fit, don't know what the king's appetite to trade him is. If crowders coming back to the kings, maybe they just say, well, you know, we like that if we're getting draft equity, we feel like Jay Crowder is almost as good as Harrison Barnes in our mind, so now Harrison Barnes is way better shooter. Like that name. I'll tell you, this makes no sense.

"So things that you're going to be because women was on a couple weeks ago and said that thugs, even with half a season, was a 90 percentile defender. I think that wellman was on the local radio show in Orlando a couple weeks ago and basically said there are analytics crew said that when soldiers on the court that they're defensive efficiency was through the roof. And so if the worst case scenario is that Jalen suggs just place his ass off on defense and is a deflection Maestro and gets in the passing lanes, I'm okay with that. What is the offense look like? I mean, again, it goes back to the individual chemistry that's already been set up can work together in ways that I think has the capability to catch the NBA off guard. I saw a nugget on the team website that a third of window Carter's dunks last year were from Franz passes. There are some pick and roll elements here at pick and roll possibilities. I think that we can't even wrap our head around. When Dell Carter himself ran some pick and roll last year and shot threes for the first year and shoot them all that well, but 33% on okay volume, like there's some untapped stuff with him offensively. I'm a big fan. And by the way, we should give we've said Jeff albums name a few times. We're not talking about one day Carter junior and Franz Wagner. We should repeat for the 12th time on this podcast. They killed the vucevic trade. A deal. Let me stop right there. Let me stop you right there. They killed the Wendell Carter junior trade because that's what it should be called. And as you know, the fan base was lukewarm to angry about that trade when it happened, and right away I was like, guys, this is a 30 year old kind of plotting center who's an okay jump shooter, but not a great way. I mean, you got all this stuff for him. That was a great, great sell high trade. As our friend Bill Simon said, why was there a bidding war for booch bitch again? What happened there? The magic, that's part of it, to sell high. I didn't expect that kind of return. I also think that ripping the band aid off

"But that I felt a little bit encouraged by that, but at least because I know there's a ceiling on point guards who can't shoot. I felt like maybe you can get there to be passable. And suggs look, I'm prepared to throw the suggs rookie year in the trash bin of history and just say, let's start from scratch. I don't really care how badly he shot and everything. The injuries he missed 30 something games. I look at that lineup and I like the idea of it. The magic we're actually solidly positive scoring margin wise when Wendell Carter junior was the only big man on the floor. There's no more bamba Carter. Let's try to make this work nonsense. It actually wasn't as terrible as I thought. But I look at that lineup and I'm like, well, I know what Franz is. Franz is the ideal third banana running around cutting handoffs, extra passes. He'll find his way into 18 points. I'm like, I find myself thinking, what does this offense actually look like? It's kind of a blank slate. And I think a lot of it looks like how many different things can banquero do right away. Could he be a playmaker from the elbow? Can he be a post up guy? Can he run pick and roll? And there's going to be growing pains. There's going to be entire weeks of the season when they try to figure out the hierarchy of who does what and when and it looks clunky. But I'm excited to see them solve that blank slate problem because there's a lot of talent in that starting 5, even if I still think they need to find the lead ball handler sometime in the next three or four years, if they're going to make a jump to be a real playoff team. Agree. So things that you're going to be because women was on a couple weeks ago and said that thugs, even with half a season, was a 90 percentile defender.

"I worry that they don't have the kind of organizational investment into him because of all of the younger guys that are big. They have invested more money in more years into Wendell Carter, they've invested the number 8 overall pick in the Franz Wagner. They've invested the number 5 overall pick. Or they've invested number one overall pick into Paula Ben Carroll. They've invested a four year $80 million deal to Jonathan Isaac and now Obama is sitting here two years, 20, like he's going to be the one that gets left on the sidelines here. What's Charlotte doing? Wouldn't he have fit in charge? I know. I know they have Mark Williams, but if it's a two year deal, he could help more quickly, I would think. And I think Charlotte is in a bad situation now because mild bridges. Real quick, do not sign miles bridges. Look, I don't know what he's going to play out with the legal system. We've seen enough from his partner posting images and posting a video of their son talking that teams need to at least allow this process to pay out or play out a little bit further as opposed to signing him. If it gets proven true, this dude should never play another NBA game very clearly. But at the very least, let this process play out, do not sign miles bridges in VA teams. There is no excuse for this if you decide to give him real money at this point. Based off of the information we have at hand, NBA teams, maybe we'll say we have more information. If you're going to sign them, then you better publicize that information and showcase why you think everything that has been shown so far in the public sphere is bullshit. I find it hard to believe. But I please implore teams do not sign miles bridges at this point because based off the information that's out there, we at least need to let the process play out further and he needs to prove his innocence in my opinion based off of that. There was a report that they completely pulled his qualifying offer, right? I hope so. Yeah. Yeah, I saw it from sport tondo. I think being on a cart chia reported it. And I don't know if that's true or not. So I don't want to necessarily. Absolutely should. I mean, I'm completely with you on this. There's no reason he should play a game in the NBA until the legal stuff is settled and it's proven that he was innocent there. Yeah, no. He has been arrested his partner has posted some very horrifying images and a horrifying video of their son speaking. What you can't sign this guy until we know more information. And if he, if it is shown that this happened, he should never play another NBA game again. Never. Myers Leonard can be ousted for what he did rightfully so. This is much worse. Yeah. Let's talk about fun things now. Marvin Bagley got a three or $37 million contract. What happened there? That's a lot of bigs on the Detroit roster. That's my first reaction. You know, they have a Linux still there. Isaiah Stewart's still there. Bagley got finally got a bag. I don't know how, if they feel like, hey, this.

"Time. There's been a little drama. Kevin Clark, Paulo's palos odds are dropping. Yeah, this is very strange. I have a question. You follow this more closely than I do. Is the betting market predictive? If we had late because I've never, I feel like when I follow the NFL Draft through this and they say, oh, the odds are dropping like it never really means anything. I would very seriously doubt this is anything but a little bit of noise. It might be a rumor and then people just feeling like there's a ton of value. But we are going to do until it drops to dead even with jabari. Then we'll know something really funky is going up because, you know, there's a lot of people that work for an organization. It's very easy for words to truck around. So we're going to assume that it's just a little noise, just people trying to grab some value. We're doing burning questions here today on the pod. You're burning question is, what should the Orlando Magic do with the first pick in the draft? What do you want to finish it to do and what should you do? They should do two things. They should reach out and see if they can get the second pick in the draft and still take Chet homegrown. If that is not possible because it sounds like OKC once chat. So we'll just investigate it. But if that's not possible, then I would take Chet holmgren with the first overall pick. That is my overwhelming desire. That's what they should do. That's why I want them to do. I think the conversation about this draft has got a little bit out of whack over the past couple of weeks where people say, okay, well, there's not a generational prospect. This isn't like a franchise saving draft. But on the other hand, in the same breath people will say, oh, by the way, Chet has some of the best defensive instincts I've ever seen. He's 7 40. He has great handling. He has a mid range game you haven't seen yet. He can shoot the three. Obviously a 195 pounds worries me. I don't need him to show up. Like, Bryson DeChambeau. In the first week of the season, we're going to be fine. Wendell Carter can take some of the tough matchups early on in his career. Take the pressure of him a little bit. This is not blood sport. We don't have to enter into single combat here. So he can take some time. The magic have no expectations for this year. At this point, KOed us through over the weekend if we'd be disappointed if it was jabari. And at that point, I had talked myself into jabari being a decent selection. At this point, I've watched so much a chat. Now, again, you have to watch the YouTube stuff. They can get you, they can get you high on anybody. "I don't care that they drafted Chengdu and usman khruba a year ago. Who knows what happens with Christian wood and Kevin Porter junior, John wall, again. But I sort of like the fire and ice pairing of him with Jalen Greene, who played really well to end the year. And Paolo would bring you immediate toughness that winning mentality of being a final four and being at duke and having so much success in high school. And it's a place that I think that will really embrace the chip on his shoulder. He's going to have if he goes third overall. All Medicare believes he's the best player in the draft and lives it. It's not lip service like he thinks he's the best player and doesn't understand why he's not number one on all the boards. They're going to get the most out of that with that fuel. I don't think he's going to get complacent and be there. Jalen Greene heard the same stuff the first half of the season. And then he turned it on late at the end and had this great finish of the year. You take that guy and now you have Paolo and they're kind of running together. That's a good base to build upon. Regardless of what happens with everything else in the roster. So for Paulo, I considered his reasonable draft range one through three again. I would be surprised if he got on the top three. So considering the top teams, right? Paulo loves to operate in that mid post range. And Orlando's core, like Wendell Carter as much as we like the idea of Wendell Carter shooting tends to operate more in that area. They don't have a ton of shooting right now. I worry that Paulo would get a little bit crowded there and we wouldn't see the best out of him. Right? While he's developing his three point shot, I'm not worried about that happening long term and if Orlando thinks Paulo is the best player in the draft. I think they should just take them and figure it out. I don't have that. I think jabari is a little bit better than he is because I trust jabari defensively and I trust this movement skills a little bit more and I trust the shot a little bit more, but if Orlando thinks that Orlando should take Paula. Oklahoma City, I think it's easier to work around two star questionable defenders than it is to work around three. And in Oklahoma City, if you drafted Paulo, you'd be working with Shay gildas Alexander, who is not a very good defender right now. Josh giddy, who is not a very good defender. And Paulo, who we have defensive questions about in terms of translation. Like, I thought that he got toasted a little bit on the perimeter defensively at duke. I thought that some of it probably was engagement related. At times, not always..

"But they also have props for the NBA draft in the first overall pick odds are out. So then I'll even paid about the opinion about this. Japan Smith right now, the favorite minus two 30 chat, homegrown from Gonzaga plus one 50 Apollo banquero plus 800. I'll just tell you, I'm hoping for jabari smith's case that he makes it to two. Because I just think the thunder have a better plan than the magic dude and Shay, I trust more to give jabari the ball than anybody in Orlando. So I hope for jabari smith's career that he ends up in Oklahoma City and not Orlando. Do you have any thoughts on that? I know that line has moved. He was not that heavy of a favorite to be the number one pick before the laundry happened. Would you take one? I gotta be honest. I would take Bon Carroll one. And I would take Chet too. I'm not high on jabari. I would be really worried about using the number one or two overall pick on a guy that I'm not really sure will be like a primary option on offense. I love the shooting. I don't know about the about the dribbling. Well, I would just prefer for him to have a real point guard. And I just don't know who's really playing point guard. Hey, man. Just don't know. I don't know. And chat makes total sense of that team. They get a bunch of long guys anyways. No Chet would be cool there for sure. Yeah, do you have him? Momba, you have Jonathan Isaac, you have Wendell Carter. Junior, I mean, all right, let's just stand another one of the wild. There's no plan. I'm just hopeful for Jim Barry's career. He ends up in Oklahoma City with a real point guard that'd be really nice because the one the one thing that drove me crazy to everybody else crazy. If you watch any auburn, the point guard situation, the great situation of it was a disaster. It was bleak. I felt bad for jabari a lot. He's a good player. "Yeah or nay on them. I'd be more towards the yay part of it. Like I like Wendell Carter, I don't think he's going to be as impactful as ayton. And if you're Orlando and you go, okay, we have this pick, we've got ayton, we've got Franz, who is one of the better rookies this year. He got suggs jabari Franz and ayton, and that's your four. That's pretty good. I think myself back into it. Yeah, I think it moves up. And I'm going to talk about this this week on the draft. Never underestimate the person who's making the decision of what their stature is in that spot. Like who has like Pat Riley could do whatever he wants. You know what I mean? And depending on what happens like if Tim Conley takes the Detroit job, Tim Conley can do whatever he wants because excuse me. Minnesota. Right. Tim Conley could come to Minnesota and kind of do whatever he wants. He should have been able to do whatever he wants. But it's just a lot more money. Waiting for him in Minnesota if that happens. But he looked at the Michael Porter MRI last week. He's like, yeah, I'm going to return that Minnesota call. The money is so different. The combine rumors that we're hearing about Conley and what this contract could mean with Minnesota. It's not, it's not the same job, basically. These are rumors, but when you're at the combine for a few days and you keep hearing the same number over and over again, you go, oh, this is, I'm telling you, Bill, it's such a huge number. Makes sense for them. They want credibility. So dore would be flip Carter, maybe throw a coal Anthony in it for 8 and if you're Phoenix, you'd rather have Carter at 14 million and be onboard as the backup or whatever and patchwork centers over paying 8 and 30 if you're cheap. Door B for Orlando would just be to sign James Harden. And just come back, James time. We'll take them off your hand, Philly. We got the Catherine. All right, here's a trade I like more. And a team I like more for Aiden is OKC. Okay, so he's picking second. OKC has picked two 1230 and 34. OKC has a ton of cap space. They could just take 8 and Phoenix could just take the picks back and not even take any contracts. They could do a Sarge favor switch as part of the trade. They could include a future first. They could just dump some picks and just say, yeah, we'll take 8 and here's some picks. And you can use those picks to do whatever. And take either palo or jabari who's ever left, put them next to and if I'm okay and I have Shea and I have door and I have giddy and I have the chance to have Paolo or jabari with ayton or maybe even Chet Nate and I'm doing it. And I don't care about the picks. I have too many picks anyway. What am I gonna do with them? What are they gonna do with two 1230 and 34 this year? And then all the other picks to happen. So take a swing. What would be the deal again coming back to Phoenix though? I would do, I would offer them 1230 and 34. And I would offer the, I would do the favor Sarge swap. And I would throw in a future pick. And I'd be like, we're just removing this guy from your cap. You can start over. You can patch the center position together. And we'll give them the 30 million. Obviously, I would not too would not be in play for me. Well, so two's not in play, which you shouldn't be in play. It's not going to be in play pressing. Presti falls to the category. He can do whatever he wants. 12 is a good pick, though. 12 is a good pick, but I need a player. Like, I know everybody hates the sun's guts right now. But there's still a good chance that this can be a really good team next year. And I know that's not what people want to hear, but that's not the way it works. And if you're actually moving on from ayton, you'd look around and say, well, we still invested for Paul and Paul. We've got two more years. We've got the non guaranteed moving forward. We've invested in bridges. We've invested in Booker. We need to add something to this. It's not just some toss in asset to do 8 in the favor of getting his money somewhere else. And that's kind of, I think, the dare here is I think that the suns looked at who has cap space and said, well, it's 8 and really want to sign an offer sheet with one of these teams. And I think he might now because he's upset enough about it. And I'm sure he's going to right. And in today's landscape, it's not about where you sign. It's about how soon you can ask out of where you've signed, because that whole thing has been moved up here. So the suns may have thought, well, maybe he's not going to do it. I think he will. But the history for restricted free agents doing offers 17 have had offers and only 7 have gone unmatched. And then you've got the complications where if it's cap space team, it's one thing, if it's not a cap space team, he's a base your compensation thing, so it's not a new $30 million trade piece. It's a $15 million trade police plus the 25%. So that makes it a little bit weirder. So I need a little bit more juice than, you know, I kept thinking about different trades for 8 and going, you know, could you talk to Charlotte and some version of this, but it makes it a little more complicated on the sign of trade. Can you find a way to land at a place in the draft where you think you get a piece back that is NBA playoff rotation ready that you like.

"That feeling that we had in 2021 about him. Well, two other pieces here. One is Phoenix is a 129 million before they deal with 8 and next year. Caps one is going to be one 22. They'll be in the luxury tax. They have Booker making 34 next year and 36th year after. They have bridges at 21, 22, 23, 25. They have CP three at 28.4 next year, 30.8 the year after that. They're paying Crowder Sarge pain and shim it. A combined 35 million Johnson coming up in a year. So you have a financial opportunity to try to get 8 and from them because I just don't think server is going to pay money like that. Now who knows if he's the owner of the year, but he's shown the history he's never going to do it. That's one thing. Two is that because of how the season ended for them and especially with what Dallas did to them. You're kind of catching them at a good time. It's like the guy who just had a fight with his fiance and then might not get married. And you ask him, what's going on? I never want to talk to her again, and then two days later, it might be fine. You're catching them at the party. I never liked her. Don't say if that ever happens, don't tell your friend, I never liked her until you're sure the wedding's off. Now I'm doing life advice. Don't ever tell your friend. It's 100 for a hundred. You're right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But you know, actually, we fooled around, so I'm glad this is over. But guess who I evaluate and against in a series against jokic? Embiid? Giannis? Anthony Davis? It's not like just you still need a guy. You still like, you need two things now. You need an ayton and you need a 5 that's a small 5. Because you're going to have, it's like that Williams kind of different level of a video game, where you go, okay, I get to change out my shields here. I overreacted last week. I was like, wow, I don't know what to think of it anymore because of what Dallas just did to him. And I think it was a reaction I regret it. Anyway, all right, so if you're Orlando, your way under the cap in the first pick in the draft. You have Wendell Carter, who our guys to Rudy, who's not here today, but he really likes Wendell Carter was on an awesome contract. 14, 13, 12, 10.9, the next four years. Orlando could just take jabari Smith and then trade Wendell Carter, you know, maybe just its window Carter for 8, maybe it's Carter and Anthony for 8 and campaign. Whatever it is, and then they look at it and they're like, we have jabar Smith and Deandre ayton now with suggs and with Franz and we have our teams ready to roll. I'd probably keep Carter. I'd probably not do that if I were them because I like that Carter contract and I'm not sure there's that much of a difference with them to pay 8 and twice as much..

"It needs to be like ocean's 15. Some team cuts power to the venue and somehow rigs the ball picking process anyway. Any reactions to the lottery, which went mostly whatever bad chalk is like the reverse of chalk, it went like anti chalk, like the worst teams mostly got the top picks. Yeah, it's a bunch of small market teams that haven't been great in a minute that I think got the big prizes. To me, obviously you start with Orlando, is this going to be the pick that finally gets them into a different era. Beyond that, you know, Sam presti in the thunder. I think are the most intriguing. They have the two, they have the 12. And they might be closer than people think based on their record of actually getting back into contention for the playoffs of becoming a young Memphis like core that can make some noise in the next few years. So those are the two Zack for me. Curious what you think my beloved spurs were hoping to get some of that luck. They got the 9th pick. So they didn't get quite as high as they thought they might with some luck, but those are the things that spurs picking 9th still feels weird. I think the highest pick they've had in a long time, right? I mean, I'm not a draft student, so they might somebody like, actually. Well, I know they picked somebody number one in 1997. I don't remember another super high pick since then. I might be forgetting, forgetting. No, I always tell. I always tease RC that we should have banners for the 5 championships, but also banners for winning the lottery twice with David Robinson and Tim Duncan because those were very big moments. And for a team like Orlando, they're almost stole Tim Duncan a long time ago, by the way. They didn't. But for a team like Orlando, this is a big moment. This could be their Tim Duncan moment. Probably won't be. Let's be honest, but it could be. And you know, whether they get chat or whether they get jabari, it's a very exciting moment for a team like Orlando that's been mired in mediocrity for too long. And maybe they get their Tim Duncan moment here. So I talked to dozens and dozens and dozens of people at the combine over four days as all I do is talk to people. And despite some hype for Murray and ivy and the sharp kid, the man of mystery from Kentucky. Most people still look at this as one, two, three, are pretty clear. And Orlando, you could get cute and say, well, can we get our guy at two or three and trade down and get something? This front office doesn't strike me as a get cute front office. I would bet on them just seeing just saying, we got, this is the guy we want. We're taking this guy. And you're right, look, since Dwight Howard forced to trade, they have been the most irrelevant team in the NBA. I think there are 19 people who watched their games and they've just because they just, if you look at their giraffe record, they just have picked one spot too low every year. They haven't been able to find anything close to like a tent pole rebuilding piece. And even the year they picked super high was 2013, which was just a complete mess. That's the Anthony Bennett. They picked all the depot. Number two, which turned out to be the correct pick and then they traded him for a Bakken then signed bismack biombo and blah blah was all a mess. This is their chance to find something to center their team around and they have a bunch of interesting players and you look at who they have. I think Wendell Carter junior is a keeper. He's pretty good. Suggs that they're optimistic will have a better year too. We'll see. You're making a face. They're optimistic. Franz is a stud. A stud, not a number one guy, but his stud. And you know, bamba, I would bet on being on another team next season. I have a soft spot for. I think he's teetering on the edge of if he doesn't start making more shots. He's on the fringes of this core instead of what they hoped. Faults are still there. I thought folks had a looked pretty damn good when he came back last year. He still can't shoot, but he's super crafty, Cole Anthony's there. I could take her leave him as a sort of long-term starter. And by the way, the vucevic trade, I liked it at the time. I liked it at the time for Orlando and didn't love it for the bulls and I felt like I was kind of on an island with that. That is such a freaking home run for the magic. A 100%. Wendell Carter was just flat out better than vucevic last year. Wouldn't shock me if the bulls sniffed around on vucevic trades this summer, by the way. Oh, one other piece, Jonathan Isaac, if we can get Jonathan Isaac back, he would be, I think healthy Jonathan Isaac is tied with Franz as the most interesting piece of this core after this number one pick. Does healthy Jonathan Isaac exist? I literally forgot about him until you started to just mention him now. Yeah, the optimist club in Orlando is saying it's Franz, it's Isaac and it's whoever at number one. That's our core in three years. And yes. You got it. I think you gotta include suggs. I still think you do. Yeah, you gotta include them. I mean, they picked him very high last year. And so he's a nice player. And I don't mean to demean it, but I think like you said, Franz is a stud. Isaac has a very high ceiling the way he's built in his skill set. And who would really pick with the number one freaking pick, better be pretty good. So then you got four players really young in your starting 5 cost controlled core, now you can build around that..

"So you had like the guy who's like bring your playbook to the office basically? Yeah, man, I went and saw the Turk. Yeah. Not only was I right. I was right to the second, but I was gonna say a couple guys that you were high on talking to a leadership changes, Robert woodard and demise Ramsey got quietly waived at the deadline by the kings. What did you think about that? Or did you even see that? It was kind of buried. No, I did not see that. So it's a new day, though I guess they were drafted by the new front office, but second round picks, that's the life sometimes. When you go out. And Jalen really quick just run it through Jalen Smith got the vote of ultra no confidence again from Phoenix that in renew him, they shipped him to Indiana for toy Craig, and then to kill Alexander walker. But let's talk about Marvin Bagley. What was your feeling on Marvin Bagley coming out for anybody that didn't know he was part of a four team trade that the pistons ultimately got rid of Trey lyles, who's coming up. I forget what his contract situation is at this point, but a couple second rounders. That's what they gave up for Marvin Bagley a reclamation project. I obviously, I learned a lot of lessons from because Bagley was this overlap between me following basketball in my free time to full-time. And I learned a lot of lessons on that. Why were you in a different place than me? What was your feeling on Marvin Bagley coming out of duke? My thought with Bagley, I mean, I think it's been kind of talked about a lot now, but it was just this basic problem when I look at big men and I'm trying to slot them in a role in the NBA. And for Bagley, it was, well, he's not a perimeter player. He's not really that skilled. He can't really shoot. He has a decent enough handle for a big guy, but he's not breaking down off the dribble for man. He's just not that player. And then you say, well, if he's not that, we'll see a center, can he protect the rim, no. And I think you go back to his time at duke. Well, there's games like, let's stick with you with players sometimes. And I think that's the value of watching a player over the course. It was college season. So if baggy and Wendell Carter, there is this famous game and I'll go even deeper. It was against Boston college and this is the game I believe that got Jerome Robinson drafted in the lottery from Boston college. So Jerome Robinson just running pick and rolls against Bagley and Carter all day. Absolutely destroying them in space. And after the game coach case forget this, we're doing a two three zone the rest of the year. And coach K is famously a man to man coach. So for coach K to say, my big men are so bad at defense. I must plan two three zone, forget it. Massive red flag. And then you combine that with the lack of a perimeter game. I just didn't really see a role for him in the NBA. And I think that's kind of played out. I think what allured me was this was a guy that I like tracked a lot earlier in high school and I loved his motor. I still to this day think that he's like a fluid athlete for his size at about 6 foot 11. He's not, it doesn't have like a crazy wingspan or anything. He gets a lot of just easy implied offense. It's kind of the thing that drew me to him. I thought that you could plug him into an offense and he could screen and roll and finish. I thought that he could become like a short mid range shooter. I thought the face up stuff was there. He has not been a good shooter. Another thing though that I think that we should talk about here is before we go on to that. I mean, the duke thing is interesting. You now were joking about teasing teasing duke. I have a bid on Twitter where I talk about being unfair to do because someone accused me of that one time, like a big baby. Who they are. No, I mean, do bigs over time, Bagley, Wendell Carter junior, I wouldn't say Wendell's a failure, but he hasn't hasn't blown our hair back. Marquis Bolden, I think that was a guy who was like miss evaluated probably just kind of seen as a prospect when he probably wasn't. Jaleel Okafor and then Harry Giles, no fault of his own. I don't know that there's necessarily a commonality. I know we're kind of joking there. It's more just about the way the game has changed. What do you think about duke Biggs in general? Is there any kind of talking, take away point with that? I don't love the way coach Kay uses his bigs more often than not. I feel like especially like the plum leaves. It would always kind of felt like go set a screen and get a rebound, do big man, get out of the way of my guards. That's kind of always felt his mentality about bigs on some level. And I think a couple points about when you're talking about baggage is true. And I still think he'll stick in the league because he is very athletic. He is very big. He can finish around the room, kind of make those three foot 5 foot plays. But there's two things one when you're a big man. So I'm someone like, I'm not super tall compared to NBA players. By I'm 6 four, so I played big man positions growing up. And it's like, yes, those are the big man offense, easy points. But you got to earn those points by playing good defense. So it's like a big man who lives on easy points on offense, but don't protect the same plays on defense, is always very questionable. And I think two with baggage, the other thing I think was a red flag looking back on it is passing. Because if you're a big man who can't plan the perimeter and you're not going to be a center, you got to play in tight spaces. You've got to be a really good passer. And that skill that Evan mobley has that has really allowed that Evan mobley Jared Allen twin towers combination. It's a mobile can make those shovel passes those quick passes in the lane, the bounce pass. He just really smart player complaining from the high post and sling the ball around the court. And if you're a big who doesn't shoot, you've got to have that passing gene a little bit too. Yeah, I think the plus minus balance thing is sort of like a forgiveness buffer, like what you were talking about Jared Allen is a funny one to bring up because it's like he gets you those easy baskets. But if he was just like a screen door on the other end, he protects the rim. So he gives you something and also it gives you buffer like we've talked about a lot in the past that if you can provide that defensive stability out there and you're not, it gives you leeway to sort of develop other things. It keeps you on the floor. Bagley, do you just start taking away talking about taking things away from you over time? It's just like, well, we keep lowering our options for what he can be as a player. I think the passing thing is interesting because I don't know the way he moves, I think I've heard a lot of people talk lately about aesthetic bias. I think and that could be at play whenever I'm watching a player like Bagley, I'm like Manny moose so well, he's gonna succeed. The easy offense is there. I think he's a really talented player on the offensive glass. That's probably his biggest skill. I thought the shooting was going to be there. One of the big things too, I think is fit, you know, Sacramento, as his dad has made abundantly clear. They were never really pleased. Team Bagley. They were out there. They were never really pleased with the fit there. And we've seen that I think had he been a better passer. He probably would have synergized better with the iron Fox, maybe the way that sabonis will, you know, he'll give some of those intangible things that would have paired. So I just want to I was curious so you're talking about baggily moving into a new fit into a new team in Detroit. What do you see in Detroit with him and like cade Cunningham? Do you think that can work? What's his role on this new team do you think potentially? I think that Kate is a more sharing minded guard than deer and fox. I think he's more of a malleable piece..

"I mean, this is nothing new to him and so he just gave the professional answer. You know, I think it's interesting though we look at Christian wood and as we move on to our next guy here, Robin Lopez, the center market is a little bit more robust than I had expected. We're going to talk in a little bit about jacopo, miles Turner's another name that's out there. There's some players out there and some teams that are after that. Maybe more so than you would expect in the current era of the NBA were small ball is the rage and speed and three point shooting is so important. But, as I mentioned, teams are looking for Robin Lopez out there on the market to see if he's a guy that they can get from the Orlando Magic. So I do think that the traditional center, it's not debt. They're still teams that want this type of player if they can get a good one. Yeah, absolutely. If you can get one on Lopez's $5 million per year salary, like, yeah, of course you're happy to go get him one year $5 million very easily movable ton of teams have a trade exception. They could take him into if they wanted to. So I think the thing is for the magic is they're not going to trade Lopez just to trade them. He's very happy here in Orlando. He likes being on the magic. As we've talked before, he likes being close to the theme parks, Disney and universal and doing all that stuff. And the magic love the way he's worked with Obama and Wendell Carter junior but the reality is if somebody is like, man, we really need a backup big or spot starter to get us through the next few months and do the playoff run. They may call Orlando and say, hey what do you think about a second round pick? And at that point, the magic may say, hey, thanks for your few months of service. Maybe we'll regroup again next summer and see. Because like we know that we're working Rubio, if a player is treated in their contract expires, they can resign with the team they left. It's only if they're bought out that they can't then sign with that team that traded them away. So that's my guess is maybe how Robin Lopez trade comes, but to your point, it does say that there's a lot of teams kind of looking around for big man help. I think regardless, Robin Lopez isn't going to be canceling his season pass to Disney World anytime soon..

"I think part of it's just getting a sea legs under him too. And in a summary, I don't want to make this sound disrespectful assembly in a preseason. He could just play so fast and sort of overpower his opponents and a lot of that could be like glorified pickup type settings in the NBA and real games now. It's playing with different gears and you're not always going to be in 5th and then when he's playing this as cool Anthony, he gets excited sometimes the ball comes his way that he rushes to get a shot off. So he's doing this thing now where he's searching for fouls in the lane and flailing. You're not getting that whistle in the envious rookie. You're not. And he did that a lot on the grassroots circuit. And the first game or two in Gonzaga and then he really reeled it back in and said, I'm not gonna be able to score like this, and it was more attacking pick and roll, powering through it the rim, waiting for swings and then kind of attacking off a shift in defense. I think that increased speed and forcing it contributes to some of his turnover stuff too. It still consistent with the four and a half to three rate that he had with Gonzaga. The shot's getting a better, he's getting really clean looks out of like high ball screens. It's some of them are short armed, and some of them just kind of like, I don't know if it's not being locked in sail off a little bit. He had that one bounce back the other night where he was four feet from three, so I don't want to make this a complete negative fest. He competes. He really gets after on defense too, he's disruptive on and off the ball. He clearly cares out there to a detriment at times. He's going to get his minutes despite the depth in that backcourt. He just needs to tighten it all up. Real in the craziness, real to turnovers, he's playing better tonight. We're talking about it before we recorded here. So I'm not jumping ship on him either. He's still the guy that I keep at too, despite the success of Evan mobile and Scotty Barnes, just it's going to take more than four or 5 games for him to really figure out. Yeah, and as we say this, he goes and turns it all over on like a nice little drip hand off that should have led to a very easy lob to Wendell Carter because part of his problem right now is he doesn't know how to shift gears. He literally like all he had to do here was get the defender, the ball screen defender on his hip. Slow down a touch. Keep the ball low on a crossover and just wait for that help defender to come, and he would have had a very easy lob to Wendell Carter. And he just didn't have the ability to stop and have the patients to do that right now. So that's where we're at on him. It's going to be a process..

"Carbs per 12 ounces. The Orlando Magic. Over under 21 and a half. I have no other ads for you because you'd be an idiot to bed any of them. My question for you is, what the hell is going on with this roster? I'm just going to read you the dev chart. The guards, Markel faults, Cole Anthony, RJ Hampton jaylen suggs and Michael Carter Williams, kind of like it. The wings. Terence ra Ross, chimo Kiki, Franz Wagner, Kiki, was that my first really bad pronunciation in the day. There was a Reggie Bullock in there that I said, Bullock. Who? Where'd you Bullock? We're getting there. Yeah. A Kiki. Chimo Kiki, Gary Harris is on this team? The undersized defensive studies are the Aaron Gordon trade. And then they have four centers for some reason. They have Wendell Carter, they have moba Robin Lopez. There's more extension mo bamba, extension Obama did not get the extension, but a lot of people are surprised. This to me cries of and under. This team looks terrible. Even the jaylen suggs has been on winners this whole life thing doesn't scare me. Jalen get used to losing. Trevor Lawrence had been on winners this whole life. Guess what? You're only as good as your teammates. I'm going under, but rosella, what's going on here? What's the plan? They look. They hit the reset button finally. You know, I think a lot of people felt like whatever they had incredibly bad luck with the injury stuff, Jonathan Isaac on top of it all. I think it's just throwing a bunch of pieces of this hoping that jaylen suggs proves himself in a short amount of time. And when a car junior is still a very talented player, he just needs to have him. But you know, you can only be passive for so long before now we just move on from you. And when Carter's like staring at the line right now, where it's like, if you can't figure out a way to be productive down here with all the opportunities, then it's never going to happen. Obama is also staring at the line, but he's staring backwards because he's already passed the line and somebody I talked to recently said, do not rule out the I want an extension season. I personally have a hard time believing we're going to see an entirely new version of him. But we'll see. I'm really worried about KFC because he has the Obama thing. And then the Killian Hayes thing. Well, he wasn't wrong about most talent. No, I'm just. I'm just worried. I know KFC like he likes to go a hundred for a hundred with the draft guide. And, you know, I think you might miss one of those two. I think one of them is one and a half. House anything you like about this Orlando team? Will you spend 5 seconds watching them on league pass this year? Only if they're playing the wizards. They I want to watch dogs a little bit, so I'll give them a test drive. Okay. We passed ten. I agree. But before fourth quarter Tuesday, Anthony is like, look, this is my team. I've got this. I did a little research to see if I could come up with a prop for them to have one of the bottom one of the worst 5 records over the last 50 years. That's what I was interested in. Oh, interesting. So like less than 12 wins? Yeah, right. In the neighborhood of 14 to 8, I think that's where you have to go. Really? I don't think they're that. They're not. That's too hard to suck that much. I couldn't get there. That's how I spent my time looking at Orlando, though. So I'm going to put under down for a house. And for solo under? 21 in 61 wins the bed. All right. We have to have 22. It's 21 and a half. Is there anyone that happens? I'm saying 21 and 61. Yeah. 21 and 61, lock it down. What's scenario? Are they running 22 games? That's not happening. But this is where it's hard because you never know. Like all you need is 5 nights where you catch the other team on the right night. And Markel's getting it going Wendell looks all right, Terrence Ross is like I'm looking for money here. I think that's traded in December. Right. Well, okay. He's one of the first guys traded. But I'm going to run some run some numbers for you here. Yeah. Because I went back and looked at it because I go, how often do teams actually lose 60 plus games? How many teams actually can't get to 20 wins? That's kind of what you're saying here. You're like, all right. It's rarer than you think. So the last full season 2019, you had three teams under 20 wins, 2018, zero, 2017, zero, 2016, Philadelphia won ten games. The Lakers won 17, 2015, it was three teams, 2014, it was two teams, 2013, it was zero. So, you know, we've had, can I flip this around? Aren't they the most domino case? It would be the most likely picks to win 20 or under. Yeah, I mean, we'll get to Houston too at some point. Part two. But and I can't wait to talk zonda actually. But me neither. They're not good. They're not good. I'm going to it's just like the first time you think of Orlando, you're like, oh, under whatever. Oh, 22 win no way no way. I wish we had zag music that we could play for bacilli as he starts thinking about this. He's trying to all perspectives here. Kyle's producing. Kyle has music. It's come up with. What would zag music sound? I don't know. Is it a sound? Actual music. The breaking glass maybe? I don't know. Whatever. Give me the over. Fuck it. Yeah. Wow. Well, you know what? There's a good trendline for you. Oh my God, when you get down to these numbers, 9 out of the last 12 super sub subculture, I spit on your mic. So so excited for this. I love this number. I go over. They go over. Say that again. I messed up that I messed up. Of the last 12 basement unders. The team has exceeded that basement number. 9 times, 9 out of those 12. 9 out of 12. You still not coherent. Still not sure what you said, but it's not good. No, what's going on? It's coffee soon. What's some coffee? I would like coffee. Starbucks? I always like coffee. We're going to the Milwaukee Bucks. Over under 55 and a half. -7 50 to win the division. It's about as that site that's like some 2017.

"And I think that I don't know, I don't need to pick up. So Miami is in a good place. And the other part of this is it doesn't happen every year, but it's fairly frequent that one of the top teams in your conference will fall off due to injury or something else, and then if all you need is one team to do it, you can. Yeah, I mean, that team was Miami last year, frankly. This year, they went from making the finals to being what the 6 seed. If I remember correctly? Yeah, or I mean, what I mean by that is like Brooklyn, two of their three best players got hurt. All of a sudden they're not the same threat they were. It might not necessarily be the nets, but unfortunately, playoffs are always a battle of attrition. They really are. So that's why being in the being in the mix is useful. Okay. Miami, just tangibly much better than they were. Absolutely. Yeah. There's just not really another argument against it. Let's move on. Let's go to the fourth team in this division, which will take the shortest amount of time. The Orlando Magic. They drafted Jalen sug and Franz Wagner, they signed mo Wagner signed Robin Lopez. They waved Dwayne bacon, they lost auto Porter. I believe that that's basically it for them, right? Yep. We'll see what they do in terms of extensions with mo bamba and Wendell Carter, but yeah, I mean, I think they were extremely fortunate that Jalen sug spelled them at 5. He looked very good in summer league and I've been lower on Franz Wagner. I continue to be lower on Franz Wagner, but we'll have to see. Even if I thought that thought that a prospect was the best player I'd ever seen or the worst player I've ever seen in some religion would still want a lot more information before made any sort of definitive thing. And so Orlando this comes up a couple of times in every off season where a bad team benefits from not having flexibility. And I think that was actually a really good thing for Orlando because they couldn't really go in any other direction after they, you know, they've got Gary Harris in the Aaron Gordon deal. They signed Isaac and folds to those extensions. So they basically have their team and that meant that they could have used the full mid level if they wanted to. They still have this big old trade exception if they want to use it, which I think they might just do that potentially later in the season to get an asset if the right player is available. So to be the most interesting part of it, we'll talk about suggs and Wagner, of course, but if the goal for Jeff waltman in the front office was to maximize the 21 22 talent, they probably would have used the middle level exception in a different way than Robin Lopez, considering they already have two centers. They want to play. But having Lopez, mentor those guys, having another capable player who's both good enough to help you but not good enough to set you on a different trajectory?.

What were your thoughts on that. Because i didn't think i was gonna get traded. And i thought if he did the price would be even higher than this and i was skeptical that anyone would offer them that kind of pressure i did. I didn't think a deal what happened. What do you think about this from either either perspective. I don't care which one to start with. Yeah i mean. I think for I thought it was going to be three ones. If you're going to get in the game for a reverse first rounder. Three first rounders. I thought that's what it was. And i guess if you're landau i guess you're quite that the wendel carter junior the pickup equates to a first round although he's got two years you know he's going into an extension year so it's not like you get clean slate with him.
