London Calling: Why The U.K. Makes Sense For The Chargers

"A report from the at the athletic that the NFL is considering a move of the chargers from L. A. to London because of some of the athletics Vinnie bonsignore sparked a a big conversation this week when he reported that the NFL has broached the possibility of the chargers moving overseas and that's twenty got quite the response aunts from the chargers owner Dean spanos bizarre home. This were planning for a long period. Okay at one me to say it again. Good again today. We're going to talk with anybody in your about the possibility of the chargers moving into London Spanish response to his story and why the move actually make a lot of sense from in the athletic. I'm could beat the Davidson and I'm under scelzo hotel. It's Thursday November seven. And this is. It felt like something was happening here is. You're something about the emotion and that's not good. This isn't a story it it stays with me All right so Vinnie. Oh you've you've had a busy week here. Can you just explain to us what is going on with the Los Angeles chargers the NFL has talked about the possibility of maybe savy moving. The chargers to London and I also reported that there is part of a charges organization people in charge organization. Who are at least willing to listen to see what? That's all about what that might be all about. I wouldn't say that they're in any hurry to move to. London chargers owner Dean Spanos has pretty adamantly denied. Your report for the team is even considering leaving. LA or looking toward London And here's what Dean Spanos said in response to your reporting total title okay. We're not going to London. We're not going anywhere so we're playing Los Angeles. Czar home is planning to be for a long and period. Okay and won't say it again. I'll say it again okay You know not not surprised and I feel like he in a way. He has to do that because he needs to show that he's committed to Los Angeles. I actually I know that sort of came at my expense events in in some roundabout way you know I. I actually respect him and admire him for showing some backbone like that and being emphatic. That this is where he is in Los Angeles Angeles is where he wants to be. This is where he's committed to being and I believe that he is actually believe that he is. But that doesn't mean that you know there's a little bit of curiosity at least a unwillingness to to if the NFL CAM to the chargers and said Hey let's talk about this at least examine. Let's take a look at what might be possible In in London there's a willingness to listen and that shows to me somewhat of an openness to the possibility of it and why why would the chargers even look to London. And what's what's in it for them with London specifically they would have a stadium to play in all. These teams wanted to move to new stadiums or build new stadiums. Why because that's how you're you're talking about luxury suites and clubs and restaurants all the bells and whistles that are available in these newer venues that are revenue streams for owners? Charges were playing in a building rolling. That was that's over fifty years old in San Diego. Likewise for the for the for the raiders and certainly for the rams right now so that access to those revenue streams weren't available eligible to and that's why they needed to get new stadiums to compete with everyone else at a level that everyone else wise with those type of revenue streams. So you would have a stadium in Tottenham that has those revenue streams would have an open market. You would have political support. You would have the corporate entities to partner up with you know for advertising and sponsorship up in all of those everything is there for them and more so no other. NFL team and no other professional basketball team. Yeah you're dealing with soccer for sure But there's a it's a it's a wide open Not just city but region and really a continent to be able to market yourselves and certainly be the only the NFL team so the the top dog in that region so that would be available to them in a fan base that I believe in a lot of other people believe whether they remained and the London chargers or rebrand into the London. Monarchs or something along those lines. Something that represented London a fan base. That would absolutely welcome them with open arms arms and just unfortunately it hasn't been the case on a big level here in Los Angeles. And that New Tottenham Stadium that that you mentioned that Tottenham Stadium was actually built with the NFL in mind yet no doubt about it they partnered with the NFL To do that. The new sixty thousand seat stadium will open in London in the summer number of two thousand eighteen and will feature retractable grass field with artificial turf underneath the turf will be used specifically for NFL Games and will allow for flexibility in scheduling scheduling. In April. The Guardian reported that Tottenham was considering sharing its new stadium with the future London. NFL Franchise and you also have locker room considerations you know when when they go to Wembley Stadium you have to basically build out locker rooms for an NFL team and then they have to change that back over to to to suit a soccer team which is a much less fewer players. And so. That's a challenge to do that. The new stadium has two sets of locker rooms that are NFL caliber NFL ready right. Now there's practice sites that would be available to them in conjunction with all that so everything from a stadium. Standpoint was from that from that stadium standpoint was done with the NFL in mind and with the NFL's assistance and vinny. How would you expect fans in London to to take in the chargers? I think that you know because there is no other. NFL team there I think and and because there's you know a passionate NFL fan base there I think they would be welcomed as heroes you know breaking that barrier You know telling the rest of the world. Hey we want to be in London we want to bring an NFL team team to London. I think there would be great passion for that. So there's been some pushback both just to your story specifically but also just to the general idea of of London as a viable permanent home for an NFL team. There are logistical issues. I'd be shocked at the. NFL OVER PUTS A team in London. Here's what too many logistical problems travel issues. Think about this as it currently stands if you've got an away game and you're NFL player unless it's the other side of the country leave on Saturday. You're back Sunday night. You Go London you go on a road trip. You're going for two or three weeks because they're not going to be hopping back and forth every week like a normal schedule. I mean it's it's three thousand miles away from the East Coast and that makes it close six thousand miles away from from Los Angeles So there's GonNa be some long road trips. During the regular season I think the schedule makers are are wise enough and savvy enough to be able to construct a schedule so that the teams that are going to London. Let's say the rams are GonNa play the London whoever's they would go play somewhere on the east coast the week before their trip to London. So you you're at least somewhat in the right right time zone. The other challenges when London teams come to plan the United States. You can't just have them coming back and forth back and forth for one game In talking to League people most likely what you would do is just having come out here for maybe two or three game Swing so they would set up some homebase somewhere and play their games in the United United States and then go home but all of those things I think can be worked out well so do. NFL players do guys in the NFL have any interest in playing in London. Some guys would love it. Some guys don't want to be somewhere. That Far Away Blake Bortles told me you know. Before he had a family he probably would have jumped at the chance or would have way more open now that he has a family. Wow what about school. What do I move my family over there or do they keep him in the United States? While I'm playing the season there's there's some of those issues but for every one player that would resist it. I think you'd be surprised to find. How many would be open to the idea of going to another continent to be able to maximize their exposure sir in their in their brand and I think fell players look at NBA players? And how they've been able to do that on a much bigger scale than just domestically and certainly you know you could look at soccer in the premier league and European soccer players and how they have become world star is not just stars in the countries that they play in the continents that they play in the NFL players are saying there's a Lotta the opportunity to really maximize our windows here. So going to Europe where we would be the only football team in town might not be a bad thing when you look at it from that perspective. I think you would have a players at absolutely look at it from that perspective.

"Horner think you may remember her as Jerry Hollowell. Not as apologized for quitting the Spice Girls in nineteen ninety eight. The band played the last eight of their current reunion tour. I need to say something I should have said a long time ago he told fans and her bandmates at Wembley stadium. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I left I was just being a brand. It's so good to be back with the girls that I love Jerry aka ginger spice walked away from the band at the height of their fame twenty one years ago. But that makes you feel old time. She's got to suffering from exhaustion and needed a break. Now she needs a break from the break years later in a documentary, she explained. She become distanced from the rest of the band, I felt I didn't belong anymore. They didn't need me anymore. Really, and I definitely felt very redundant. She left just before the band. Oh, she knows her apology came just before the band played good by the number one, single that addressed her departure.

"Like like a character from LA Lam, when in fact, if you know the song who wants to live forever which plays during the montage. We're in Freddie, Mercury is diagnosed with aids that is the pop single from the movie the Highlander, which came out in nineteen eighty six the year after Live Aid. So we know that live eight wasn't the last time that Queen performed together because they made a whole album and did a tour floor the album that they released alongside the release of the movie Highlander, which includes the song purchase of universe and a song who wants to live forever now during that tour they stopped performing. But there's also the whole Queen at Wembley stadium. Concert that I think of when I think of Queen at Wembley stadium, which is not the lively concert, but a different concert. They did at Wembley stadium. As part of the magic tour, which is not which after Live Aid. So like the whole end of end it had to stop the magic tour because Freddie, Mercury was diagnosed with aids so like the whole secret because you've managed to pull the movie the Highlander out of the distortion record, which I played you guys for for not keeping up with the canon. Because they're allowed to do that the whole sequence of events at the end of Freddie, mercury's life is totally botched at the so maybe I shouldn't be so harsh there could be only one after all, and it is a it is a vicious world out there. But yes, there's a lot of inaccuracy another inaccuracy in this movie is presents Freddie, Mercury at some of some sort of savant who has never saying in a rock band before when he joins Queen and as a fan of theirs, whereas in real life. They went to go see him and sharp him away from a different band. Right. So it's it's not it didn't work out that way at all. So the story of the founding of Queen the story of the break-up a Queen and a lot of things in between are not really true to actual events, which I guess, I mean, do you go back to what that was saying about this being a postmodern movie? I feel like you have a choice, which is to either view this as a fault of the movie, or as one of its defining features and out to sort of float that idea out there, and I'm wondering what you have to say about it. I mean, it has to be one of its defining teachers. And what would think right? I mean. Otherwise, it just is wrong. I mean, not not only because that's the stock over thinking it interpretive move that like just assume its intention on. But but yeah, also. But then you have to answer. Didn't you have to ask him the question sort of shifts? Right. Like, then what what is being accomplished by doing some of the things that that the movie does I mean, one one of the things is that it's sort of? It's this this revisionist. It's ex post facto read. That I think I think has to do with. The sort of wishes of the surviving band members. I think it has to do with the idea of what a contemporary audience will. Sort of take on and and do will accept right, especially an audience that is going to go. See a film about gay icon, Freddie? Mercury right there. Certain kinds of discursive shibboleth that audience is going to demand has to do with the commercial dictates of the box office because this movie was a PG thirteen movie. And so a lot of what made Freddie Mercury. So compelling, right. Is that he was so sexy, and that that it was sort of uncontainable and that like though, it's kind of hinted at it..

"At Wembley stadium for the eagles and Jaguars Philadelphia topped by a score of ten to six in a really interesting half turnovers. Dictating almost everything that happened in that half. But a big touchdown in the final thirty seconds for the eagles to take the lead in that ball game coming up later on tonight on many of these same Westwood One station Sunday night football, and it is a rematch of last year's instant classic divisional playoff game between the New Orleans Saints in the Minnesota Vikings. New Orleans comes into this game with a five one record the Vikings at four two and one just about everybody remembers the Minneapolis miracle last year the plate is to find digs on the final play of the game. That saw the Vikings win and advanced to the NFC championship game. I talked with Vikings tight end. Kyle Rudolph in anticipation of this matchup this week. And I asked him if he remembered exactly where he was when the miracle happened in Minneapolis had a pretty good view of it being right there on our sideline. In the flat. Remember as the play developed their corner covered via the flat. And as soon as he covered their short guy on that side it when I wasn't sure if the ball is going to go to curious or stuff on then I turned and saw case throw the ball deep. Just a fun. My thoughts Stefan jump up and catch it. I knew he was a couple of yards from the sideline. So immediately. You know, this hoping that he'll be able to catch it and get out of bounds. But not only did he catch it. But he had the wherewithal to keep his balance. And when he realized no one was in front of him running score. Touchdown. When you saw were that ball was going when did you have a little bit of one of those? No, no, no, no, yes. Kind of moments. Well when the ball was going there. It was more, you know, hopefully, he can get out of bounds. And it was like, you know, what he caught it did gotta balance. It was that. No, no, no. Oh my God. He's gonna score down. But yeah, there was definitely a that brief roller coaster of emotions how different is this team this year on the offensive side of the ball with Kirk is the quarterback. I mean, we're doing a lot of things that we did last year that we found success in. But then also doing things that were done in his career that he likes as well as things that foot brought over from Philly. So I told people kinda throughout off seasons at the beginning part of this year. It's kind of like a little melting pot of of those three offenses. In a lot of ways, you know, the beginning of a new season. Do you kind of get an idea of how things are going to be how a team is going to find itself in a lot of ways looking at where you guys came from at the start of this season. I gotta think you never comfortable in the National Football League had feel pretty good about the way. Things are going right now. Yeah. We weren't where we wanted to be after our Thursday night game last week of September. And knew that we had a big stretch of games coming up starting on the road in Philly against defending Super Bowl champs. But we knew that reason why we were losing games was things that works fixable. You know, it wasn't something that we had to change. We just had to go out and execute a little bit better. Get back to things that we have done here in the past that caused us to win football game. So after that. Start through four weeks. You know, we've gotten back at doing things that allowed us to win games in the past taking a look at what one of your teammates, Adam feeling is doing and it's been remarkable marvelous dominance, and I think people enjoy the story all the more. So because this is an undrafted guy who it would appear has done it all with a lot of hard work and being precise about the way. He runs his routes. Why is he so successful talented? And there's a lot of guys in this league that work hard, and you're not gonna get through level that he's at by just working hard. I think Adam's guy that's proved since day that he got here that you know, he's not just a guy that tries hard. He's not a guy that's going to go out there, and you know, just buses tail for four quarters, but there's some talent behind him as well. He's a very skilled receiver and now the country starting to see that we get and week out. You take a look at this team. And they've had their struggles. On the defensive side of the ball. And yet you have seen firsthand with they're capable of doing. What are you seeing from them on film this year or there defensively speaking unbelievable against the run, you know, the number one rush defense in the NFL and they're five and one the only game that they lost is the only game they've given up one hundred yards rushing. So you know, they've really tightened things up in the run game. And then, you know, they're an opportunistic defense, you know. They're very good and holding teams to three points in the red zone. And it'll be big for us to not only be able to run the football. But score touchdowns when we get down in the red zone. Scoring touchdowns huge in this game. This could be a little bit of a shootout New Orleans is averaged over thirty three points per game on the road this season that second best to the Kansas City..

"It's time to pick up the pieces after blowing a seventeen point fourth quarter lead against Carolina last week giving them one more loss than all of last season. But quarterback Carson Wentz is embracing the adversity. Yeah. I mean as a quarterback and just the leaders in general, you know, it's really on a lot of us to get everyone going again and realize record aside that doesn't matter. No the goal is to go wanna know every week and especially division the division. We're in it's kind of wide open. So at this point of the year, not where we want to be the whole season firmly on the other side. It's a really Jaguars team. That's lost three straight outscored ninety two Twenty-eight during that stretch. But. Despite the recent struggles, Jacksonville sits just a game out of first place in the AFC south head coach Doug Marrone, understands his team isn't where it needs to be. There is frustration. And the first thing you do. You look yourself in the mirror and say, okay, look, I have to do a better job. And I think when you when that happens, then it opens it up and goes, and that's I've talked to the players. I've got to do a better job. We all have to do a better job. We're not doing what we need to be doing. And it's it's all responsibility the Jaguars and the eagles swear off from Wembley stadium in London next. The NFL. It's west wooden one. "Here right now? Nobody's gonna say. No. But they no secret was going on. And it ain't it. Ain't right right now it is. What is the Jags have lost three in a row and are now below five hundred in the AFC west the chiefs, of course, moved to six in one massive ofensive output for them on Sunday night at home against the Bengals. But Joe forget the chargers they go to London for their win. But that's four consecutive ws for the chargers and Philip rivers continues with what has been an incredible first half or him. If a decision by Mike variable of the titans to go for the two point conversion instead of the point after attempt now, I get it. We're talking about Justin Tucker. Right. So they're not automatic. But are certainly more high percentage than a two point conversion but rebel decided to go for the win instead of the tie and overtime. Which is maybe depriving was ninety thousand something fans at Wembley stadium of getting extra football free football as it were. So it's an interesting debate that we're seeing in the NFL some coaches preferred to take the risk they believe in their guys they say, they'd rather be aggressive. The goal is to win and other guys are more conservative. But that's not very bowl. A lot of faith in our players have been converting third downs and converting in those situations and Marcus. You and everything we need them to do with keeping plays alive. And so. I can't not going to second. Guess the call just didn't work out loved it. I loved the call. I love that. He has a confidence in us to go make that we just an execute. They did a good job covering. I should have done a better job. Maybe extending the play known as the last play. There's definitely more. I wish I could have done with that being said did a good job of covering make play. So a lot of strange things happening as we approach Halloween in.

"Lira is resuming declines as. Measures announced by the central Bank. Proved insufficient to stem around in the currency this as president air to on shows no sign of backing down in. A standoff with the. US which sanctioned to ministers in his government in a spat over the detention of an American pastor, in Turkey for more let's go live to stand board daybreak Middle. East anchor Yousef Gamal El Deen is standing by Yussef let's kick it off with the political developments I guess overnight since president air to one attacked the iphone Matt stories, been moving fast so we had the. Speech from from president as you pointed, out where he threatened that. They would, be moving away from the United States in terms of that trade relationship he. Specifically mentioned tech the US is Turkey's. Large four fourth largest trade, partner after, Russia and China so, it's not an unimportant relationship and then you had the Russian Foreign Minister in town for good measure. For ideological fix. If you wanted, to send. The signal across the pond. We hide the US response in the forms of their in the form of their spokesperson who said we believe Turkey. Needs to do the right thing and they're gonna come through with that and now this the last few minutes Matt Turkey raises the bar once again we understand that now they've raised customs tax on some US goods. Including vehicles so you're looking at twenty two items mobile. Phones are. Not included but again it does. Include rice alcoholic beverages and one hundred and. Twenty percent on passenger cars and other motor vehicles sixty percent On cosmetics so once again after. The clear threats yesterday in his speech here the government following me. Up with, some additional measures and arguably raising the stakes for the remainder of the day. Guys yes certainly raising the stakes aired. On not giving up her. That easily, it seems attention also, turning towards foreign currency bonds cease if that Turkish companies hold run us through the numbers here The conversation there on interest rates is. Not over yet even. Though the, president has made clear that he thinks this is evil and a tool of exploitation domestically there have been more and more voices who are. Calling for tighter monetary policy and it's because of this domestic. Pressure that is growing speculation that the central Bank may move on rates but not necessarily at. An emergency session more likely at its regularly scheduled meeting you mentioned the bonds Bloomberg's crunch the, numbers you looking at sixteen. Billion dollars worth of foreign denominated bonds that are gonna come to you by the end of twenty nineteen the, first, company that's up as. Coca Cola each a check they've got five hundred million dollars in the senior unsecured note that's coming you on October one so this again goes to show that if this is going. To, turn into a debt crisis it's not gonna happen overnight and the. Real damage is going to be done if the lira stay at low levels for prolonged periods of yeah I mean We've already heard of foreign shoppers getting super giant discounts on like luxury items but I wonder, when the tables turn and. Retailer start raising prices have you seen inflation on regular things when you go out to eat Yussef or people, already. Raising prices Not just yet I'd say the majority of the interactions that. I've had, and the. Goods that I've purchased which mind you have not been luxury? Goods just yet basic goods to survive and get through the day here. This bull those remained unchanged with the exception of of fuel prices selectively at certain retail outlets but again you're right the question becomes is how, quickly is that going to change the exchange houses have been very. Quick to. Reprise and. Reprise quite accurately we. Went. Through some of the shopping. Streets and they were offering liras, at quite a realistic great, given, global markets are. Trading that particular play but we'll keep a close eye on that over the, coming days of course
