"Clashes between police and the supporters of Senegal's main opposition leader have continued days before a court verdict is expected on charges against the politician. Police fire tear gas and demonstrators burn cars near usman sonko's home. He's being tried for rape and death threats against a woman working at a massage parlor and could face up to ten years in prison if convicted he would also be barred from running in next year's presidential elections. But sonko and his supporters accused president Mackey Sal's government of trying to derail his candidacy. The clashes come a day after police stopped sonko's freedom caravan from traveling from his hometown in the south where he's mayor to the capital where he was forced into his duck our home last week, one person was killed and others were injured in similar clashes between police and sonko's supporters in the south. Biden 2024 splits Dems but most would back him: AP-NORC poll
"A new poll shows Democrats are split over whether President Biden should run for reelection. The AP norc center for public affairs research poll shows 47% of Democrats say they want the president to run. The number was only 37% in January and announcement from the president could come as early as next week, First Lady Jill Biden told the AP in February the president is running. He says he's not done. He's not finished what he started. Despite the ambivalence by Democrats in the poll, the numbers also show a large majority say they'd be likely to support the president if he became the nominee. Also 78% of them say they approve of the job Biden is doing as president. The reluctance to support the president reflects concerns about age. Joe Biden is 80. The oldest president in history. "All right, so guys, listen, as I was prepping this, I was still kind of reeling from the news that Silicon Valley bank has failed. Maybe it will have sunk in by the time you're listening to this, but at the moment, I think that people are really kind of underestimating it still. I've barely begun to wrap my head around potential systemic implications, but just in the startup scene, it's still so significant. We're in a moment where it is now extremely likely that some startups will live or die on the basis of whether or not they banked with SVB and whether or not they got their money out. Brad hargreeves summed it up like this. He wrote Silicon Valley bank closure and receiver ship is going to have a massive impact on the tech ecosystem. SVB was not just a dominant player in tech, but were highly integrated in some non traditional ways. A few things we'll see in the coming days and weeks. One SVB was incredibly integrated into the lives of many founders, not just their startups bank and lender, but also provided personal mortgages and other financial services. A whole mess for FDIC or eventual buyer to unwind. To any uninsured balances at SVB, those above 250 K are in jeopardy. FDIC plans to pay them out quote as it sells the assets of SVB. Lots of startups exclusively banked with SVB as this was a covenant of their debt. CEOs yesterday faced a hard choice. Pull your deposits and go into default on your venture debt or risk losing everything if the bank failed. Many chose to hold tight as SVB outright failure seemed outlandish. Now they may not be able to make payroll next week. Unpaid wages pierce the corporate veil, so boards are incredibly sensitive to employing workers they may not be able to pay. Expect mass layoffs later today Monday at latest. And given the week fundraising environment, a number of startups have been reliant on venture lenders, EG, SVB, not aggressively pursuing a monetization of debt or triggering default for covenant foot faults, EG cash balances. How will FDIC handle this mass defaults? Having run a startup through the global financial crisis, this is the first thing I've seen since that that is even vaguely reminiscent of that time. Crypto Clients Flee Silvergate
"All right guys, jam packed end of the week. First of all, a quick follow-up on silvergate. Obviously they were the main character of yesterday's show and what started as a trickle of crypto companies leaving the bank has now turned into a flood. By Thursday, the list of companies that had cut ties with silvergate included coinbase circle, paxos, crypto dot com, bit stamp ledger X, CBOE digital markets, galaxy digital and Gemini. Silvergate share price dived about 58% dropping to an all time low. For those who haven't listened to that show, silvergate had announced on Wednesday that it would be delaying filing its ten K annual report, and the notice of delay stated that the bank was answering questions from its auditors and accountants needed to assess the impact of ongoing regulatory and DoJ scrutiny and needed to reconsider its ability to quote continue as a going concern. It's assumed that kraken is the only major crypto exchange continuing to use silvergate, having cut ties with crypto banking rival signature bank on Wednesday, although kraken have not commented on whether they still have significant business with silvergate or not. Now, one of the other subplots of the silvergate revelations was speculation around the status of micro strategies $205 million Bitcoin backed loan from the bank. Some breathless short sellers have speculated that the loan might be called in if silvergate declares bankruptcy. Catalyzing a micro strategy margin called that some have been speculating about since the beginning of this bear market. Micro strategy calm this speculation on Thursday afternoon, tweeting, we have a loan from silvergate not due until Q one 25. There are market concerns regarding silver Gates financial condition. For anyone wondering the loan wouldn't accelerate because of silvergate and solvency or bankruptcy. Turkey, Syria quake deaths pass 9,500; deadliest in decade
"Georgian rescues have freed a woman from underneath the rubble in the city of Ali a man in turkey, as search and rescue efforts continue after the catastrophic earthquake struck earlier this week. First, clear and search operations with heavy machinery, then sniff a dog and hand tools. A trapped woman is pulled from the pulverized concrete rubble. Manatee County to Consider Bringing Confederate Monument Back
"So out of manatee county, Florida comes this news, the manatee county board of commissioners will discuss reinstalling a 22 foot monument to confederate soldiers that was torn down amidst protests and hysteria back in 2017. Most commissioners approved of discussing the idea at a future meeting after residents raised the issue last week, one of the one of the commissioners commissioner Vanessa Bao, who voted against taking the monument down back in 2017, said, I don't like ignoring our history. It is what it is. Some things about it are good. Some things aren't, but it's our history we shouldn't be changing our history. First time I've ever heard of a community willing to at least discuss putting one of these torn down confederate monuments back up. And that's really something. It feels like maybe the pendulum is. So i'll and then the ravens put up to fifty and the browns put up one hundred fifty three so just looking at this and how close these games are this. Kansas city chiefs team is defense. Defense such struggle lately and they had to restructure the entire front and they had to manufacture those yards short yardage situations to be able to get the minimal yards that they were able to there. If you're if you're going to found the offense on a ground game to open up everything else whenever you get in those situations. They're going to your guys not able to do it.
