Fred rates fast growing trees

"Fred i saw an interesting list this week. And i and i wanted to run it by you because Just listening to you over the years. I know that you would have had a heart attack a few hurt. Somebody recommend this list but a gentleman wrote in too. I'm not even going to say what the specific website is. But it's a website that deals with trees and he wrote in and he said i have a patio faces west. I just built it but it was so hot this summer. I need some quick shade. Can you suggest some fast growing trees that we give me shade. And they made a list of twelve fast growing trees. But i think they just picked fast growing trees. They didn't really think about what is right. And what is not right for. Someone's lawn and i know that you agree or disagree with some of these trees. So i thought we'd go down through the list of fast growing shade trees and you could give me your opinion on them. I'd be happy to do that. Marquette and of course. I will have certain bias but the same time it's usually based on horticultural appropriateness. So let's go down through the list and see what happens. I'll try to avoid the heart attack for okay well. This is the time of year when people are thinking about this kind of thing because they know what happened this past summer they want get ready for it in the spring so the first fast growing shade tree. They recommended was quaking aspen. What do you think of that one If you're down. South eastern ohio in coal mine soy oils that are acidic and nasty and so on and near a pond for water. I'd say the quaking aspen. It's fine. I don't know of many in the central ohio area very very very matter of fact i only know of one home That that tree was used. It happens to be located in a spot. That was good for it and good for the property. So yeah one out of a thousand. That's that's my thought on the quaking. Aspen kind of wasting your money on that one. How about the northern catava. well no A friend of mine. who is now deceased. Half with a started inauguration that was directly opposed to the use of qatar place l. l. rest in peace but at the same time It's not a bad tree in in. I'm going to call it a back forty We as a kid. I called it an indian cigar tree. it's not all bad however many people even though the plant is beautiful in flower. It's as long as it's in somebody else's yard because when the pedals drop it makes one heck of a mess on the lawn I would say for limited use only now. The tree grows. Well here It just isn't one. That's up to par for the normal landscape so okay but took careful where you put it. As long as it's three three doors away in the neighborhood You're okay okay. I'm thinking those two nose so far the hackenbury tree. We're not heck. I mixed emotions about the native and the native is is a good tree. here Very sturdy very very big very very everything except that a couple of insect problems and then it's it's basic growth can be a little bit ordinary however the native tree and there are some cultivars coming along that i've been now somewhat time-tested so where when you're stuck for a sturdy tree that can handle the clay garbage that that ohio turns out in weatherwise on akber is okay with or or from the standpoint. Some of the new cultivars the native no because among other things it has a little insect problem. It doesn't hurt the tree but the insect is so small that can come through the normal house screens on the window and Most of sick and make the housewife pretty angry. So i would be careful with a native but at the same time i'm looking forward to it coming into the future As a a really well-chosen tree for our nasty soils okay. what about the Red sunset maple. Well i have mixed emotions on you I know that if it's on its own route and it's planted in the right place it's going to be okay and then the color i mean it's chosen for its color however it's a fairly fast growing three and I am somewhat opposed to the grafting of trees anymore. Now it's a good way for production. But i don't like it for the future health of the tree but as far as red sunset is concerned. I put on make okay list. But i wouldn't use it for a wealth for this gentleman's shade and fast growth. I wouldn't trust the tree to give me shade on the patio period of a longtime And from that west zone okay Well i'm about

"I called you the other day and I'm like Oh, it's a mess everything. So overgrown and I'm telling you about my call is that's taken the. Anna's hip in the Salvia swamped by the whatever and you're laughing at me and so. What's the time for can? Besides facelifts. But just just because you aren't having guests visit doesn't mean you let the whole thing go to pot. Or you're thoughts go to pot. He's GonNa Discipline Me I publicly out loud on the radio. You said, you're pinching things so they get kind of thicker but. You May. It may be time to cut stuff back I. Guess I'm I'm using a modest sounding verb but yeah, you're right some cutbacks will you I have these big balls you've been here and you know people who visited if seen them through like big low terra cotta bowls on the patio and other places they're kind of you know and I group smaller pots around them but they're they're sort of the big statement centerpiece things for my annuals usually and and you know. Not. Everything grows at the same rate and put it all in when it's small, you know little things from the garden center but then something's grow more lushly than others and so like the Coleus, for instance. 'cause you know. Yeah. When you're cutting those Coleus bag you you mentioned that you could route them in water. You can also in some situations, just stick them back in the same container if you've got space and then that'll get even more lush and full without hanging over and losing its Bottomley's and stuff. Because, when you when you pinch or break off that parent plant branch and you'll get more leaves on that one, and then you have these pieces that you can either sticking or route in water or I like to use per light. Okay. So containers with like a pot of per light. SMALLPO- of per light and. Moist in the per light Tampa down really hard that really seems to help, and then I drill a hole in the per like with a pencil and sticking my cutting and firm the per light back around the cut and again, and you want to remove a couple of bottom leaves of the cutting the cuttings about. Four to six nodes long. So it's depending on the type of plant. Three to five inches long and some some plant. Coleus. Might route and two to four weeks. Then you have a new plant with roots and you carefully pry it out of the per light or in the case of water, you want to move it when the roots are less than an inch and a half long and sometimes roots made him water have a little trouble adjusting to a lower oxygen or higher oxygen medium. But anyway, you can stick them back in the same container that you took them from or just what you need Margaret. Another container of Coleus definitely need that. That's absolutely what I need. 'cause I'm doing such a good job managing the ones that I have this year. But seriously it has been kind of an epicure in the sense of We all are realities are changed Completely you know our patterns of life are changed. I mean, I'm stating the obvious and and on top of that in our region and many other regions, there's been severe weather so we have had. I've had almost no rain until a hurricane in fact, I should ask you how did you do during the hurricane that was just a couple of days ago I had a couple of inches of rain. Outages Day or two but not. Terrible terrible like many areas nearby had much. No, you were praying for rain. Also, a lot of areas they're still places New Jersey that don't have electricity. We lost power for almost twenty four hours. But we had five and a half inches of rain, and then that's stopped and then the wind came in the wind was really a lot of wind but. Knock would not trees and I've got tree did trees here. So I thought Oh that's GonNa be something there was there was one stick about four and a half feet long from the ash tree that was stuck into the lawn straight up. It's always funny when that happens in a big storm when it's also like spear gets thrown and it yeah, it really lands like right as if someone. INSERTED. It with with force while someone did. Yeah. Now, I had a couple of inches of rain and ninety. I keep saying to myself is this whole year? The theme weatherwise has been it never rains, but it pours it won't rain for a month practically and then we get the torrential gully washers. It's almost no rain. Yeah. Half. An hour of tons of you know you think finally and then it turns out it's dry under the trees sometimes. And you got to listen to half an inch but I was thinking about what we were talking about just before if you make a new plant and you potter it up of Coleus or a sweet potato vine or Begonia. You can carry. You can try to carry that over in a very sunny window inside and by March that's probably not going to be a very pretty plant, but you can cut that back and it'll make new growth and then make cuttings of the new growth and you can save a lot of money because you can use that to fill your those cuttings to fill your containers.

Especially now that we are in Jupiter Florida for the hot stove show, which is Morphing into the spring training show with Dan McLaughlin and myself, presented by mattress direct live from Jupiter, Florida. Hello franz. It's great to be back. Baseball is here. We've got a great day. Weatherwise agers degrees. Yeah. It's hot today. Pitchers and catchers officially reported. No hang-ups players are here. Most the players position players are here. We were talking before we started the program. I guess the only ones I didn't see and they don't have to report I guess for another couple of days. I have not seen Dexter Fowler. I've not seen jet. Jerko? Unusually historically those guys. Come in usually a day or two before the official report day for position players. But in terms of pitchers and catchers everybody is here. Everybody's healthy no ups and camp is off to a good start. So looking forward to it. Yeah. Looking forward to it as well. This camp is is different than than years past. And and Mike Scheldt, I think is one of the factors in that. It was talking about that with Paul the youngest couple of hours ago as a matter of fact, and he was saying that there's a just different energies the way he would describe it to this camp versus previous camps. What is your sense on the way that shift will attempt to run this camp versus previous years? Well for me. I mean, I I've known Mike for a long time. And he's a bright guy. He has run before a camp that has had just minor leaguers, and I go back to the point that he made longtime ago when he was running the entire minor league camp. And he went. Tony the Russa Joe Pechiney Dave Dunkin he walked into that camp that had them running the major league camp. And he said to Tony in those guys. He said I'll just get out of the way. What do I need to do? And they those guys said to him. Well, you know, we we want to help you in any way we can. So you know, we're here to help. And basically what happened was? He saw how a camp is run from their perspective. And then had the entire minor league camp that he ran. So he's been around for so long that and he's been thinking about this for so many months. You know, what do I need to do? What how do I run a camp? What do I want to get out of it? What are the themes of every single day? Do I have a championship team? Do I have what is it like to close out of the be standing on the mound theme? What's it like to catch the final out theme all those things? And he's going to have a theme for every day in a guest speaker. And let's worry about double plays. Let's get back to fundamentals. Let's get back to base running. He's got those different things. Excuse me that he wants to I think in part every single day. But I I can tell you one of the things that he wants to work on very very hard on is getting back to the quote, unquote, cardinal baseball way, which is fundamental and base running. And I know that's a point of. Uscis in this camp. And I think it's gonna start on day one. So the things that really fascinate me Tim in this camp would be number one Dexter Fowler. Number two. Alex Rae has talked to Alex today about his health. He said he is ready to go. He's excited about you know, how his body feels whereas shoulders at where his mind is at how his daughters feeling I mean, all those things he said man, I'm just ready to go. I feel great. And I think number three would be. They have ten starters potentially. That could go on anybody's roster, including the cardinals hot does that all fall into place? So how does Mike Scheldt manage all those things in this camp? I think it's fascinating. And when he think about the the ten potential starters that means that everybody's endings in my time doing the games..

The three things new dog owners must do to socialize their pets

"To the my smart puppy minute. This is Sara Wilson. And today, we're going to talk about socializing young puppies one two three. Now. Number one is safety. This is a big concern and people are still being told not to take their puppies out until all the shots are done. This is old advice. If you Google av M A, which stands for the American veterinary medical association ABM a socialization puppies up. We'll come there document from twenty eight about how important it is to socialize young puppies, keeping puppies in until all their shots are done is a little like keeping your child inside. And never letting them meet anybody until all of their shots are completed that nobody would do. But. Safety is a concern. So I take puppies out to shopping malls stores. I'll take them to friends houses who have vaccinated dogs who have been in the home for over a month or who don't have dogs, but they will go everywhere with me. I won't take them to parks animal shelters pet supply stores because I've seen people take dogs straight out of the shelter and be walking around a Pet Supplies store. So steer clear of that feel free to carry your dog if that's possible. And if they're big, and you have a car drive different places and just sit in the car, and let your puppy watch the world go by this is critical are developing so quickly they go basically from birth to adolescence in a single year. Can you imagine what a child would be like if they had lived inside not notebooks? No idea of what the outside world was like. You'd be brought up on charges for doing that to child don't do tear puppy. Number two is set the tone, your puppy, doesn't know what to think of this big world out there. So if you see your puppy being hesitant or questioning be happy relaxed confident your puppy will look to you for guidance. It's very important that you act the way you want your puppy to act if you act concerned or frightened your puppy is likely to become concerned or frightened right with you. And that's not what anybody wants Dow. Number three, keep it up because you're puppy is developing so quickly even allowing a week to go by can be a detriment to your new friend. I like to get them out every other day or every two days while they're under six months old and that can be a quick run. If you're going down to the supermarket to pick something up, and if it's safe weatherwise, take your. Up with you. Walk them around the parking lot for five minutes popped up into the crate. Go do your quick shopping and then head home break, a member of the family, or friend with you to meet you. So they could babysit the puppy while you go do what you need to do or vice versa. But keep it up. It doesn't have to be a big deal. It just has to be happening there. The tips for socializing tongue puppies one-two-three focus on safety, set, the tone and keep it up that way, your new friend. We'll get the very best start possible. If

"The weather center early in the show that either i have my tvs got better reception or they actually have good weather royal birkdale this year so how do you look at it with regard and whether or not having the impact of his hand the past we'll certainly weather yesterday was kirk and we saw with the scoring with the alltime 62 sir umbrella gracefully the the finest round ever major championship today they reverted back to a little bit of what they saw on friday there's a little bit of moisture coming down there's a a good amount of win but as open championships go yeah i would say this is the other than yesterday sort of a typical week weatherwise i think that's one of the factors that we'll be interesting your watch over the final four holes how much weather does come into play because the wind is like i said ever present in the circumstance and you mentioned um you know good rounds already i mean that's the other thing is bizarre about the spent around two hours ago a rookie from china nantalu agree comes down to sixty three and you think well that's a great round but jordan speed and he's he's a six hundred but certain speed it eleven other starting but he bogeyed three of the first four holes going now the markets are these struggles of the time so isn't very much in question it probably boils down to now those three players matt kuchar who has played the steadiest of the two players in the group and not brilliantly by any means it alana down to kuch your space and as i said lee is hoping that they'll back up enough give him a chance to get into the play the keep in mind that they have to play the parfives down on hold now and they've got up four or five at seventeen so in terms of gaining back some ground the field if you can play good shots you you can still sort of salvage something out of this day but it's been a bizarre do you mentioned coocher who i think his plans.
