California continues to be battered by fierce weather with fresh snow falling in the mountains, and even cold temperatures in the San Francisco Bay and elsewhere, but national weather service meteorologist David Roth says another storm is expected to target all 48 lower states, and the precipitation you get depends on where you live in relation to a warm front. If you're near and just north of the warm front, you'd be talking about heavy rainfall. If you're far enough to the north of the warm front and the cold air, yeah, you'd be talking about freezing rain and snow. And in the west, since it's a cold enough system, there'll be snow. "In Northern California and damage to parts of the state, 2023 has been a very positive year for water and drought conditions so far. These first couple of weeks in California. Alex hardy with the national weather service says the rest of January looks dry, and though we need more storms to help end the drought this year, the start of the season has been very beneficial. This year 2023 is opposite of last year January 2022 in every way. Certainly with weather with rain, the persistence, the intensity, the coverage across the entire state of California. The way I like to look at it is last year in December 2021, we started off really well. We had a couple of big storms right before Christmas mountains snow. Then it just shut off on January 1st. This year, we get that same type of weather pattern in December, this time it happened just after Christmas, but it just was relentless. And then it's carried all the way through until today where we still have lingering showers. It's a much longer prolonged series of storms, wetter storms. If that makes sense, more juice, more moisture, more atmospheric river. And it's really focused and has been focused right over California. So a much different weather pattern and something we haven't seen really since 2019. We have some decent storms in 2020 right before COVID hit, but we just haven't seen it's been two plus years with anything like this anywhere in the state of California. A lot of times historically in California, it's talked about some big storms. For example, December 1955, December 1964. December 2010, there's a lot of talk about historic one week storms. In this case, though, it was a series of storms, each one, quite a bit different with the one standing out being New Year's Eve and then the one over the weekend really standing out. But even in between that, the rainfall that Santa Barbara received on the storm earlier this month was just incredible. 12 to 15 inches of rain in one day. So we had large broad storms, but they were repeated for multiple days. So we got to the situation where we are right now, really. Is where we take anymore, the ground was saturated. It wasn't long enough to break. Prior years that we've seen some big storms in SoCal. We've had long breaks. Two, three, four, 5 weeks, where it doesn't rain much at all. In this situation that we are in now and why we really need a break right now is we've got to that saturated point where there has not been any period long enough more than a couple of days in the state, really anywhere to recover. And that puts you in a situation where you can go from a lot of rain too much rain to disasters like what happened in 2017 and that really wet winter when reservoirs were compromised. Now we're starting to see landslides to that basically means the earth or the land soil is compromised. It's too much. It's a sponge now. A lot of times when you get

Some fierce winds and rains pounded California over the last few days, and another system expected over the next few days. According to the national weather service, the last ten days have been the wettest such period in San Francisco since 1871. And that's ABC's Mueller langhi reporting. Many parents are ready for this cold and flu season to just be over. RSV has made a lot of children quite seriously ill. Doctors say there are things you can do at home to help your child feel more comfortable while they fight the virus. Here's what a local pediatrician told coma four's Holly menino. Now we are seeing kids who are sicker longer and having a longer period where they are most infectious and needing more supportive care That supportive care includes things parents can do at home to help their kids through illness, especially when it comes to a virus like RSV. Infants are just tiny. They have little noses, and so if they get congested, it's harder for them to clear out their noses and it's harder to breathe. That's harder to eat. RSV is a common cold virus that causes inflammation in the airways and produces mucus, making it difficult to breathe. The most important things to do at home are really anything that you need to do to keep your child breathing comfortably and eating well. And the core of that is suctioning. Doctor Susanna block, a pediatric hospitalist says suctioning is the most important tool that you have at home. She says start with a saline spray, which is just salt water. But it helps liquify the mucus in the nose and it kind of looks like an aerosol mist. Doctor block recommends using a nasal aspirator over a bulb section. Doctor block recommends suctioning be done with every feeding. And before a child lies down for a nap or sleep. If you have a child's suffering from RSV, other important measures to consider our fever control and hydration. A child needs to urinate

Now to storm team four meteorologist Howard Bernstein, these storms tonight. Yeah, and just got word from the national weather service that that's a great thunderstorm warning in Frederick has been canceled. So the storm has weakened just a bit. It's kind of between Frederick or batum Monrovia, new market in that area. And then west of there, there's another strong not severe storm, kind of just north of three 40 and the Jefferson area, which extends up toward shepherdstown and sharpsburg, and even that goes all the way back toward the martinsburg region, and you were talking about that accident and Braddock heights, yes. I 70 is wet from Frederick up toward around oh Hagerstown there, so certainly some wet roach may have contributed to that. We will see the scattered showers and thunderstorms through the evening hours, the first part of tonight actually with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. east of the blue ridge and then for D.C. Baltimore and there's a flood watch in effect until 10 p.m. so we're also concerned about some very heavy downpours which could cause some localized flooding. This activity becomes more isolated overnight with showers here and there. Maybe a storm lows upper 60s low 70s. Sunday gets a lot better. We're talking about maybe an early shower. It'll linger toward midday if you're gonna be out toward ocean city Rehoboth. But for the D.C. metro region, we look much better on the afternoon as lower humidity levels move in, more sunshine, highs in the upper 80s and Independence Day looks sweet too. Sunshine highs up 80s to near 90, but humidity levels in check, so if you're headed out to any firework shows Monday night, I'm thinking low 80s around 9 30 or so. Again, the severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9 p.m. east of the blue ridge and the flood watch in effect until 10 p.m. D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis.
