"And welcome into poke bear episode 79 that Jeremy lauzon and U.S. Olympian David wore soft ski episode. I'm as maronie. That is kinda Ryan Connor. How you doing? Evan, doing well. How you doing? Doing better than the bruins. Well, the birds didn't play on Tuesday night. They just had the wheelie able re ceremony. And then all great. And then they left. It was weird. I mean, it was fitting like a great honor for Willie, so it was good that they just got out of there afterwards. So I know the schedules got a wonky going forward, but just cut down there and I was like, oh, okay, bye. All right, see ya. Help you guys. What's the game? We're just gonna have the ceremony and it was cool. It was all great. It's amazing ceremony. And so now we're not playing the game. No big deal. But in some ways, the broods didn't play a game on Tuesday night. They decided to have to show up, right? You know, we're just here to it's like I've made this joke before, but it's like detective crash more Santa Claus than you just get to another two mil. It was kind of like that night. It just showed up another two mil, showed up, get my paycheck. But before we get into the debacle that was the game on Tuesday night. The willow resemblance was fantastic. And it is so long overdue that he gets his number 22 retired. The 12th number. I think it was fill esposito who said he's one of the dudes now. That was pretty fitting. That's for zito's got like now that he's down in Florida. He's got like big Pat Riley energy of like old dude like living it up in Florida. That's like what Phil has risen to is now. Yeah, as he should. I mean, the guy deserves it. You've earned it, man. But no, amazing ceremony. And they did such a good job. He wasn't there, but they made it very inclusive to him. It felt like he almost was there. And his speech was beautiful. I mean, you were in the building for it. What were your takeaways from it? Yeah, no, I thought it was a very well done ceremony. Obviously, it's unfortunate that we couldn't be there, but as you said, I think the whole ceremony itself, like his speech, which was heartfelt genuine, and if I think you've been lucky enough to meet Willie in the past, that's kind of the main describers of interacting with that guy in classy, genuine, always heartfelt, so it's just a tremendous ceremony for him. As you said, long overdue for everything will he's done not just breaking the color barrier and the arduous journey he had to take to get there, everything he went through, but then to also play while being, again, legally blind in one eye and still having the career he did, whether it be with Boston or then over and I think the western Hockey League as well. And then just it doesn't just end with his planning career in the journey he had there. But to then spend almost three decades continuing to grow the game and be recognized as a key builder. And I mean, you looked at not just the ruins, but every other team in the league, I think had on William Reese stickers. You saw multiple players of color like Wayne Simmons, talked about how he was his idol growing up how he used him as hockey Jackie Robinson for the being that guy.

"And that's kind of something that I've learned along the way. And as a big, you know, bigger guy in this league, you want to keep that physicality up, but you also want to be relied upon that. You can make plays and be out there and increase your situation. So, you know, right now, the conference is there. And it's been a good balance. Matt dumbo was saying after you guys beat the leafs at, you know, it's pretty cool to, you know, you plan on Saturday night and people that don't normally get to see the Minnesota wild play, get a chance to see you play. And it was a wildly entertaining game. That kind of cool for you guys to get, you're getting a little league wide notoriety that maybe people didn't notice before. Yeah, it was an exciting leading up to the game. We had a lot of exciting jitters for that one. I mean, it was to make a statement for our team. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I grew up in Canada and was able to play in Buffalo for so long. We played the leafs a lot that, you know, maybe I got a little numb to the hockey night in Canada thing. It was just something used to it, but there was just something for our team to showcase ourselves and then we took it upon us and it was a great game. Toronto is a heck of a team and obviously has great scores and we wanted to show that we're at the top of the division for a reason. And it ended up being a great game. So yeah, we were excited for that for that Saturday night puck drop and games like that bring out the best there and it's just nice to hear a whole team step up and then play that way. And obviously get that win against Ronald was big for our group, which is confidence. You know, Marcus, that one also added some feistiness to it as well. First period, you get into a dust up with Wayne Simmons and the media was quick to jump on social media anyways saying, oh, folio should get ten games for leaving the bench. I mean, that was the automatic response. Capri's off stays on the bench as you jump up, and then you come back and engage. Now, as we know, the National Hockey League didn't see it the way some media portrayed it. But as you're coming out of all of that, are you thinking oh jeez, did I just make a pretty significant error here? Well, I'll take it back. When I got on the, I got the puck on the wall and I made a flood past the.

"I probably on annoying. But i think they just lack so much physicality on that team that you know. They're not built for the playoffs. They're built to score points. I don't know man. I mean i think that's why they brought in wayne simmons. But but what is he going to do on your fourth line man. What is he gonna do. Physicality provide physicality unless you have a plane with their top line. Unless he's leo camera v. to he's not going to have an impact for those guys because the guys are in finishing the their plays like. I don't know if he's like dude. We should sit down one day together and watch like you know other wash the game more condense plays like you'll just see like mars especially and i know he's getting bullied the most right now. So it's kinda unfair but you know you just give up on plays and the and the offensive zone like he. He puts his stick in the play. You know like he's like i tried. Guess i didn't get it me back the other way. And then you're losing possessions that way for me Do you take that. As i mean i know you physicality thing i mean i kind of think it again is not an attitude thing but like something intangible that we can't see you know like something in our locker. I don't think that they gel as well as people think that they do. You know all of them you know. I don't think that they play together as well as they should you. Now let's say individually. They're great players. But i don't know you know and i mean i think it's easier during the regular season but the playoffs again. Yeah they're different beasts in you know if you don't have that mentality man you're not gonna win. Yeah exactly. And that's why. I'm saying like i hate like going back to boston. Because or even even make the same Same remarks about like tampa bay like when they go in eighth finish. Check your igniting your team your players around you. They're all excited to play. All of a sudden you make a great play to keep the puck and deep martyr makes play. He levels the guy or you know he wins. The puck battle. They have an extra chance to score there. They have an extra thirty seconds. Fifteen seconds in the offensive zone on their top line and not offensive zone. Where they're so lethal. they're not getting those opportunities. because they're losing the puck every time they enter. You can't not be physical you can't not you know. And maybe that's the chemistry thing because nobody wants to be physical player for them. Whatever i know. I'm probably sounding annoying at this point considering how much i've said about it but it's just it's just. It's funny the disparity between the two teams. Yeah no yeah that makes sense. I hear that but anyway my these you're probably gonna wrote me somehow for this but I went with pasta man. You know i know. He's a my little man crush this week. Probably for this is why. He got my steve's but outside of that his hat trick you know and he's just a menace on the ice you know when passer knocks out there It's terrifying islander fan. You know when he's out there so He's hot right now. He's playing good. So i had to give him my sees luik twenty six. My sees the weakest. Brad marchand nam skin bucket rap. Boy no My sees the week is Meco ranson on know. We mentioned him before That seventeen game like playoff point streak is not Is five points in three games in the series against vegas Than know he was murdering the blues..

"Back to ottawa's sports talk and whatever on b. as wp so everybody in this part of the world. James and i don't know about edmonton hockey fans but still talking about the demise. Once again of the toronto maple leafs a tradition. unlike any other right today Failed to get past the first ground once again. Haven't done so since two thousand four and got me wondering about the future. What's happening with this team. In the off season they brought in because one of the great complaints. They had a couple of big complaints about the makeup of the team. After last year's demise in one of them was lack of leadership and so they had jason spencer but then they bring in joe thornton they bring in wayne simmons. Zach bogosian n- No i wasn't wanted to call mike so you've got nothing but leadership and yet what happened. I mean it seemed to work out in the regular season. They were so good but come playoff time. That's when leadership is really supposed to kick in and yet a three one series lead. I'm one of the things that keeps you from getting skittish losing all your momentum is a lack of leadership that it's rudderless. This team has lots of guys who should to guide the ship here. And and prevent these cave-ins made no difference whatsoever as montreal came back and won three straight and not only one the three games but they were the team that was ready from the opening. Faceoff in game five montreal comes out and gets a three nothing lead game. Six montreal comes out and gets a to nothing lead in game seven. They come out and get a sizable lead as well. So toronto didn't even show up on time for those last three games. So i don't know maybe leaderships overrated. Maybe that particular group is is overrated. Maybe they don't have the ability to go with the leadership. I don't know but there's gonna be changes in toronto. I hit the post breakdown right. Some some of the stuff that people are saying about it jerry. Di who's who's a big hockey guy you know the comedian jerry. The in the in the show. He didn't all unsure right. Yeah big big sports nut okay big sports nut and he's he's he's generally kind of bang on with this takes you know. And he's a leaf fan. He lives in toronto from from there. Good hockey player too. Yeah right right an excellent golfer by the way anyway. He came on and said as lee fan. Now you know said look a relax. Everyone quit trying to tear this thing. Down ended up with a unbelievable goalie and carry price and shit happens. You know shit happens in in the world of sports i. I don't know enough stevie if you if you look at this and much tearing down are you gonna do just because you..

"This German Come on. You know how how much more do you want? If you can't win a serious this year? With all the stars you have with Matthews and Marner and Neil and ER and I know to various getting hurt was a huge loss in Game one. Every you know, every year they seem to have identified. Okay, Well, we We weren't our defense was a good enough so they've gradually made moves over the years to make their defense. Better care. Goaltending wasn't good number. You can't blame Frederik Andersen for this Jello. Campbell didn't play that badly. We need you no more guys who know how to win in the playoffs. Hey, let's go get Spencer, who actually played well in this seriously, Joe Thornton, or no matter what that's part of the hilarious nous of this, no matter what. Stay address each off season, they still can't get past the same point there been years works. The goaltending there been years. When. What this time, I guess it's Mitch Marner, whose is public enemy number one. You know, he hasn't scored a playoff goal in this last 18 playoff games. It's probably tough. That is tough and he's a great player. He had a fantastic regular season. He's immensely Talented. Matthew's only got one goal in seven games, and he's a phenomenal player. That's what that see. That's the thing right to your point about Toronto. Look, I don't want to win. A lot of it's because of our side of the feeling of the rivalry with the sabers in the main police, but there are teams Troubles and don't wear if they're living at the top of my list of in the top three or four of teams that I never want to see. Win another game or ever win a cup again. Boston Philadelphia The Islanders They're all up there, even Pittsburgh. But there's just something about watching the Leafs lose Jeremy. I really love their team. I really do. I think they're fun to watch. I think they've built a really entertaining club. They have some very, very talented players on that roster, and I think they really do a good job. And then something happens and they can't get over the hump in the playoffs, but to lose to Montreal in a seven game, Syriza's when you had just a golden ticket The third round of the puss. You beat the Canadians and guess what, you play the 14th ranked overall team in the next round of the place. They didn't even get to that. I mean, it's crazy. You know now what they do will be really fascinating to see if they if they sit back and go. We're really good. Let's not overreact to this or if they think they've got to get rid of one of the stars or do something to really Shock the roster, so to speak. Fred Tweets in about that Syriza. That serious reinforces my point on how important goaltending is not for the sabers. For some reason, they for some reason, seemed to ignore the problem that has been consistent since Ryan Miller left. And I mean goaltending in a syriza. Sure you don't want carry prices contract? No, no, no, no, no Cary Price the contract by the way, he's played 71 career postseason games. Yeah or 74 they mentioned last night. It's here. It is his 74th start. That's a lot of playoff games for Cary Price He's played Ah, lot of years, but you do not want Cary Price. You do want him in that series, but unfortunately, having him that series on his current contract means that you have him at a $10.5 million, cap it through 2026. There and he's 33. There's a reason Montreal finished. Would you say 16 18 18th. There's a reason they were 24th last year. Part of it is they paid too much money to a goalie. They built from the net. Montreal's not necessarily good. What you getting or seven games. Syriza and your goalie can steal a series like he did. I mean, they've got some good players, too, and they made some nice moves in free agency. But to fully um but Yeah, she Anderson was Henderson right? The points Never. The goaltending is not important. I mean the sabers. Is that a hot take if you were to see you rather have built a team out with Lena Saul, Market, three million and Cary Price of 10. I don't think it is in a serious you'd say Yes, I'd rather have Cary Price. But Carey Price has When he struggled not only in Over long stretches. He had a save percentage a couple years ago. There was, you know. It's one of the worst contracts in the sport. Harry Price right, You just wouldn't want it, but in a seven game Syriza, right, But today, it feels pretty good. See, that's the thing like Jack Campbell. I know he's you know, he got. I'm sure he feels awful. In fact, I think he said he did after the game. The first goal last night was proof. But you can't. I mean, you don't Hey, didn't play badly in this syriza. I mean, they didn't score. The leaves are one of the best offensive teams in the league, and they didn't score again. The to various injury is one of the problems they had their power play was awful. The line, The Matthews Marner Hyman line. Had two goals in the entire Syriza's. I mean, come on. I mean, they didn't lose every game 6 to 5. They were losing games because they were scoring one goal or two goals because their goaltending was good enough to win, But their offense they didn't score. They couldn't be Cary Price. They couldn't score goals. They couldn't score with the man advantage, and they lose three straight games in the back into the serious Why Scored six goals the last three games. Their offense was almost non existent with a 31 series lead Philip that all the line matched up against Matthews and that line that you know Matthew scores better than anybody in the league and one goal in a seven game series. Probably not enough for him, Um, Price. Meanwhile, just getting the numbers here. His save percentage this year this season was 901. It's not that it's not great at all. In the Syriza's Was 9 32 made some big saves last night. He did good chances, right? Right. And, you know, honestly, I think it's it's nice to see him doing well. I mean, he's he's fun to watch. He's likable and all that. That contract is something that kind of, you know for people that are Montreal fans. Maybe you're maybe for Montreal fans kind of defines the idea of having the big goalie. No, thanks. No way. Yeah, especially at his age. Yeah, That's why so Anyway to the point of, I assume you know, the divisions will be back to normal next season, which means the leaves in the sabers will be back in the same division. And that's why I think What they do in the off season is going to be fascinating again if I were them. I mean, I wouldn't get rid of any of the big The Big Four. So to speak, the various Matthews Martyr and Neil and I guess would be in the Big Four. It's a good hockey team, but then stuff happens. First off, it's tough to win in the playoffs. You can run into Ah, Hot goalie In a short series, you can have a bad matchup. You know, whatever key injury can knock a big player out of your lineup there a lot of things that can happen and I just think if if I were Toronto I would hope they don't overreact and feel like they've got to do some major moves to get one of the stars out of here or something like that. And because I think I'm going to assume we're going to hear that, for whatever reason they're not built for the playoffs. But you know what? They've tried Tried everything right? Okay. A few years ago when they lost it was you've put too much on offense, your one sided hockey team Trade. Which cousin who was out last? That's right, Then they bring in big ocean They bring in TJ Brodie. They do a few things right on. Okay. There better there, Right. Well, they need more toughness. They need more grit. Right? You gotta have toughness and grit to win in the postseason. Bogosian. Wayne Simmons was picked up this year. Okay. Well, you know what If we're being honest, it's a lot of former sabers. If you're hoping to be good to a lot of former 74 batters, Yeah, well, then, and then running Jimmy Vesey. That's true, and they moved 33. But then they said, Okay, well, you know, it's the playoffs. We need guys who've experienced playoff success. They know what it takes to win in the postseason. Here's thought.

Joe Thornton Ryan Miller Wayne Simmons Jack Campbell Lena Saul Mitch Marner Jimmy Vesey Fred $10.5 million Carey Price Cary Price Harry Price Jeremy Matthew Matthews Neil TJ Brodie Spencer Henderson 14th

"You know. just rehash it. Is you know this was a whole season. That was just about answering questions. The playoffs would have been a dream. Come true and it would have been a great experience. But at the same time i think the most important thing was to be able to figure out what that roster's going to look like next year when we hit eighty two game season and expects a lot of the younger players who now are gaining experience to be able to come in and make an impact before. Yeah and we're going to put off the more positive than negative to later. 'cause i wanna talk about this notion of an active offseason because i it's it is all anybody's talking about it and i totally understand it from a from not only a fan perspective but also from a media perspective and those of us that work for the team carlin. Jim darryl nick. Alex unites at our zach But nick had me on the radio last night news asking me during the first intermission. Do i think that there's going to be a ton of moves this offseason and the reality is. I don't think there's going to be a ton. I think there obviously will be some And i and. I think that they will have to be important but looking at the free agency list. I don't see a ton of earth. Movers and and further to that point. I don't see a ton of earthmovers that are at a point in their career where they would say yes. The right thing for me is to come join a team. That has missed the playoffs. For three years in a row and and you know et cetera et cetera. And unfortunately you see quotes. I don't know if you read the tyler. Toffoli piece in the players tribune but he echoed a sentiment that a number of players have echoed when they leave l. a. which is l. as great if you're a professional athlete in the national hockey league because you get a ton of money there you know you can get good seats at like the dodgers game and occasional. You'll meet the celebrity but nobody. Nobody's going to bother you for an autograph when you go grocery shopping. Local newspapers aren't writing a ton of stories. About who you're dating or you know whatever whatever and that's great and lord knows. I wish i made that kind of money. So i live that that version of living in la but any but then he goes to hoover and we saw this with wayne simmons and we've seen it with a number of other players who leave la who started their career and they go play in another city and they go. Oh this is a hockey market And so you know. La has never been particularly successful at luring high profile free agents in either of the ducks..

"That reminds you to stay cool and always bet responsibly. Not really headlines this episode episode twenty two because we've got enough on her plate with the playoff matchups and appreciably. We're going to start in the north division and we're going to start with the toronto maple leafs and the montreal canadians now. Toronto bested the haves seven to in season series. Does that matter to you. I mean when when when you're going into the playoffs and you're lucky head to head matchups during the regular season. Does it all matter to you or do you just simply look at the roster's the depth the maple leafs have particularly upfront and gulf now. Toronto needs to be heavily favored. Here I think it's a cliche to say it's brand new season. Anything can happen Because in some cases one team is appreciably better than the other give you example in one thousand nine hundred four when the rangers won the cop. We got into the playoffs with the new york islanders in the last day of the year. Jamie mclennan often says that that four-game sweep should have been ended in three. They beat a six nothing. Six nothing five two in the first game we could say it was a new season. They were just better. It didn't matter if we played them one hundred times. They were just better. Yeah now. I'm not saying that decisive and advantage but toronto is better and in my mind. It would be an enormous upset if montreal lint. I'm not saying they're not capable of it right but it would be an enormous upset. And one of the reasons drake's i think everybody focuses on the offense of difference between the two teams right the least defend incredibly well and if i think we have in our minds how they used to defend when they played a bunch of five three games. They don't do that anymore. they're one of the best teams in the league at Spent at spending the least the number of minutes in their own in a game. I think only dallas is better their second the leafs are. Yeah whatever in yours own. They've gotten terrific goaltending from kabul. I think that can be a wash but carry price could be a difference maker could be. That could be what they have to hang their hat on. I think the leafs are as good as montreal. Defensively and appreciably better offensively. I curious to see. I mean taveras the near lander in particular of late last fifteen games or so. I've been really solid offensively right that second line for the maple leafs has been rock-solid nick felino can stay healthy your top sex looks pretty strong. And then you bring riley nash into the equation. Expected to play with kerr foot and ilya mckay of i mean top nine and oh by the way your fourth line especially thornton and wayne simmons. That's that's tough to match up and division. It is because it's dangerous from a couple of different places and the one thing you have to guard against. If you're montreal is that you spend all your time trying to figure out how to stop them right at some point you have.

"Is no code. I've never been handed a copy of the code. I don't know what it is and you play in a long time by the way with some tough dudes. Yes you feel the code like there's a sense of what it is but there is no code there are no. There is no handbook and so the people that are arguing about it online and make lots of noise about it. They know even less about it than i do because they weren't there and they've never been there now. I understand the emotionality of the response. Ettler hit was bad and he got suspended and toronto's not happy because they lose zach hyman and their their guy is hurt so they're looking for retribution. If if the league doesn't want that to happen. The only way i can think it can happen is to make the suspension in her directly involved with the team that that incident happens. So of alexander gets two games or four games in a normal season. He would edward got two games. The next two games have been against somebody else at toronto doesn't get any any satisfaction from that the cannot slough would lose adler four games against chicago and pittsburgh or whoever it was if it's against toronto. Maybe that matters a little more. Because i cannot be more clear on this what i think. The code is what A player today thinks the code is a player on another team of today. Thinks the code is is all different. Yeah it's different because there is no written down of this has to happen. Do you think you should have skated away. Do you think alexander should have just said look. I'm not fighting. you don't need to fight you. i. I served my two game suspension buzz Yes but it's easy to say. Because i'm sitting here on my coach when you're in that moment you feel this unwritten code like you feel it again and so he probably felt well first of all he probably looked up and saw wayne simmons and went off for crying out not him. Yeah because simmons could really do a number on and to simmons credit. I think there was a point there where he kind of thought in the fight. I mean i could be wrong. But i thought in the fight simmons what that's enough and any stopped like he could've kept going and he did. He's clear he's fighting a guy that doesn't fight. I think ever felt. I have to take this fight. I i think it's wrong as i sit here as long retired blair but in the game. It's different it it just is. I wish i wish i could explain it. I wish i could explain it more clearly. But that's when you're in it. It's different than when you're viewing it from the perch which we do we. We all do it media in general. Of course the other thing that was a head scratcher me was the suggestion that okay well if there needs to be a fight than needs to be someone other than wayne simmons. It needs to be closer to alec sadler non fighter. Well i mean who does that. Is it like ilya mckay of like. Are we going to be happy. Just somebody some random. Toronto maple leaf fighting alexander in honor of of zakheim and that doesn't make any sense to me either. It doesn't and here's another reason why it doesn't because then people are going to look at wayne simmons and say. Why didn't you address this hunter percent and so what wayne supposed to go out and say while he's not really in my weight class and these four guy like it doesn't work like that it's.

"I grew up playing with that kid. Really shout out to the connecticut. Ron ainsi ones thirteenth overall. Pick one hundred and thirty two games the show it's it's staggering to think of some of the guys who just do it quietly you know. And maybe that's why. I take the number for granted a little bit back off my initial take. There are some sneaky candidates who could get big numbers games. Played like Wayne simmons where he is right now. and let's see here. He was eighty. What's eighty eight birth year similarly be up there. What about what about phil kessel phil. Kessel is like a maybe not surprising. Like thirty three or thirty four. He looks it looks weathered but another guy like and and the way he plays like he could. He's just a truck right like you could see him just plain for ten more years right in the right situation just out there wheelin no you six hundred six hundred fifty games shy of patty marlow is you know. He's he's a guy that's made built on speed kessels nominal player but to doughty's only thirty one years old. He's play held by the. He's almost playing a thousand games if we're talking about his contract already like it's one of the worst albatross in the league a mess as an effective player but you know we really think he's claimed ten more years for you but contracts are point. That's not irrelevant right. But though harassed to only but that's why the unions are created the buyout for sure for sure. But i the question is overlapping cap issues. After winning like alarming ya very interesting parallels The lightning go through it a little bit too not to the same extent but i think you know when you think about was i liked just dumped every veteran jake allen. See a couple of years before that. David backes in troy brouwer. It's you know when you when you think about a guy like eric staller. I think the salary cap presents a very real question of what are these guys going to be willing to accept and will they will. They seek opportunities where they're going to be in the lineup. One hundred percent of the time and You know or do they wanna win. And i think what we've seen historically with the nhl is as guys get later and later in their career. They value being on teams where they can win or have the opportunity to win. You know doesn't necess- necessarily mean that they're going to be in the lineup. Hundred percent of the time. You look at the islanders was picked up. You know kyle. Mary and travis jack at the trade deadline and travis ajax ben you know atop six player in the nhl is entire career is no. We're not talking about whom the games played discussion necessarily. But you know he goes into an islanders team that has been pretty high functioning and Pretty dangerous of the east division. And you know if if it's not a major injury to anders lee. He's i dunno where travis project fits into that team without disrupting a lot of the chemistry that they've had to put them in the top division. So like it's a it's a different kind of example. I guess but it just kind of pointing out. I don't i don't think there's all like this There's there's very few roster spots here across thirty..

"Now joe thornton got one point or this in the last twenty games. Joe thornton got one point. Wayne simmons has got three and Piang goal has got four. So that's half of your bottom six. That's never on the board never and then moving guys in and out like we saw nic robertson. Scott saverin played a game. And i think they're trying to get a feel for okay. What could or lineup lookalike. And then guys. I know geyser because i've been on teams like this. You're looking for the new guy to come in and start playing well. They got to wait for netflix. And then they gotta wait for william mainlander so the guys are looking for something. That's not there we'll and then you get sloppy and then you scramble and then all of a sudden you're goalie spring some leaks and i mean it looked jack. Campbell was not gonna stop the puck ninety five percent of the time right otherwise he was the best goalie in nhl history and so now stopping it at a boat idiot and a half percent which is a little low for him. But you've got some issues. And so i would say in the next week or ten days. You'd like to see the lineup. At least stabilize to a certain point and that includes matthews who sat out last game wall. All right when you look at the goaltending ill. There's been so much. Fanfare around jack campbell. Deservedly so many sets a franchise record in wins all dot to use your word leaky Against the winnipeg jets in the first period Play goal goes off his glove. Maybe he was spooked call. Connor shoots in a similar spot. Beats him clean enough concerned that you look david rettig and you go who they may depending on what happens with freddie anderson david rettig all all of a sudden becomes a real big piece. And i'll let you answer that but think about this too. i. I like the story of jack campbell. There's not much not to like but the history of jack accountable and like you. I like being around super positive people. And he is that and then some but in this market in a canadian market in general there can be too much of that right because you amplify the highs but the amplify the lows. You know money against montreal. He comes out and says. I was embarrassed by my effort. Like it's too much of one thing and then lays an egg against the jets in in the first period of thursday's game like i if i'm doing toronto. Pr i'm probably keeping him away from zoom media availabilities for a little bit. Just let things settle down. Okay so couple of things one. I think whether we're concerned about the goaltending or not. The leafs are because they traded a third round. Pick right for essentially a backup goalie right. The uncertainty over anderson's health been very protective of jack campbell's health as well. I think i think it is a concern because there just is uncertainty as for campbell..

Bruce marshall of the gold sheet and gold sheet dot com base in las vegas. And we'd take a look at the national hockey league bruce. The there was a moment. A couple days ago that just warmed my cockles wherever those are just made me realize why i love hockey so much and it wasn't it with my sharks. It was a game That was between the canucks and the leaves and it was the third period and Wayne simmons of toronto had boarded. Clint hughes pretty hard. And so jamie benn. The captain decide to stick up for them and they dropped the gloves and it was very businesslike workmanlike. They both dropped the gloves kind of rolled their sleeves a little bit and Basically than wayne simmons who they call the spider because of his reach got about eight free shots ben's face. It's almost like he took pity on of unem- bendon go down to his credit and they broke it up and they both guys simmons and bensaid nice job and it just once again first of all. Don't pick a fight with wayne simmons but the other thing is there's no other sport like that first of all it was a real fight with somebody getting punched and second of all. There was no bad blood afterward. It just it just makes me that moment. Just may be love hockey so much. Yeah.

"Will you read? You know, finally being noticed for being that, you know, first minority in hockey, and we're starting to see War and war, Uh, black players in the league and minority players, and that's huge for the game. Uh, I remember, you know, talking to my good buddy. In fact, I just talked to him today for a little bit Roberto Clemente Jr and he would tell me You know, Katie goes. I know your dad. His favorite player was Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers. You said my dad, you know, it was a dark skin, Puerto Rican. He goes. Even the Blacks used to discriminate against my dad because that's how tough it was. But you know, people don't You know, they don't understand. They don't They don't see you know this racism that has gone back. I think things overall. I really do think that there's been a lot of progress made are they're still going to be racist and Every walk of life. Yeah, there are. Unfortunately, it's sad, but that's going to happen. Talk to me about how the NHL has come, Ah, ways and it still has a ways to go. And how many more minority players you expect to see Come up through the pipelines in the upcoming years? Because we've seen Warren Warren, you mentioned a guy like Wayne Simmons. And you know, I remember back in the day It was like Grand Feur. And there were not a lot on the technique to root. There were not a lot of guys you know, back in the day, so talk to me a little. What about the progress that the NHL is making as far as that all goes as far as the minorities on the way up and being a bigger part in the NHL? Yeah, you know, I mean, can I live in a small town, You know, 20,000 population here, but, you know, growing up in the suburbs of Toronto. I grew up in Scarborough, which is actually the where Wayne Simmons is from. And it wasn't a nice part of metropolitan strong so I can tell you that Um and I played hockey with, you know, with Ah lot of black kids. African Canadian, I guess would be the proper but and I played with a lot of the kids I played. I played high school football as well. Um, you know, one thing that they started here about 10 15 years ago in Canada as everyone can play And basically what it is, is, um I think it's like 105 bucks gets you a full set of gear. You have to be any key under 12 years old or something that might get you a full set of hockey gear and get you a couple of practices and a couple of games And then if you want to pursue it from there There's avenues that kid can take, and if they can't afford it, they have some support and sponsorship on some different levels. But they started this about 10 15 years ago, and it's been Um, you know, it's It's been a really good way to introduce the game for a kid that hey, can imported or be don't have the opportunities or or just didn't grow up with somebody pushing them towards that sport. And so you know, in our community here, we've got We? We've got a lot of East Indian kids playing and you know, there's a couple of kids on will's team and you know it. So that my son, of course, and so, Yeah, you certainly do seem or that it's good to see Um, one of the neat stories I heard about Willie O'Ree. He's blind in one eye. Hey, can I don't know if you knew that, but when he came up into the NHL Didn't tell the coaches or tell anybody. Nobody asked for anything like that. And he just kind of went on about it. Didn't find out till years later that will. You re not only having of course, the break the color barrier man each other did it with one eye. I don't know if you knew that, but it really is. Well. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. Well, I like the way when really told the story goes well, you know, nobody asked you to stop something we asked. People right has a vision, right? Especially back then. You know, like, how is your vision there? You see? No to both of my eyes, right? It's not like they have the science of the trainers like they do now. All right, so you know, nobody asked, really said so I didn't offer it but I was playing with one. I almost fears there. One. I certainly wasn't as good as the other, That's for sure. Great. They're all like, gosh, she never noticed whenever he gets a tip in it, So he's always on the right side, Iet's just unbelievable. Can you ever get something from the left? That is great that Zed that's incredible to me. The other mother, right hand side there. Among the left exact, be ongoing joke. He had the right. He gave a new meaning to the No. Look pass, right. I mean, for sure his good stuff. Wow. It is great to see though, that Ah, lot of these pioneers are being honored. And and and we don't even realize you know some of the scrutiny they went through, you know, coming up and and and again hearing about it, you know, firsthand from the people that their dads or their grandfather's experienced it, it is always kind of need and and really gives you a different perspective and proper perspective that that let's get back to the glad I was gonna say, Let's let's get back to the lead. Let's Let's stay in that Canadian Division real quick. What has quite you're right because that connects one that opener they dropped. Three in a row. Calgary's off to a to Owen, one start as his Montreal losing that one to the to the least, of course in overtime, Uh, Winnipeg, two on one out of wood, 11 and one and then admitted sitting at one and three. Talk to me a little bit about what's caught your eye as far as anybody because Calgary off to that good start, and that's a team that you and I both thought had an opportunity to make the postseason. Yeah. You know, a couple of things that were kind of jumping out at me, You know, First of all, The Oilers and, you know no surprise there. One trick pony, right? You shut down that line of David and Dr Seidel, and you've got a really good chance of women. The hockey game. And, you know, economist David, you know, very great hockey player, But I mean, you know, the Oilers have tried to split those two up a swell toe balance is growing attack, but they just don't have the depth of the players around them. I mean, How many years is everything they've been? Really They just have not been able to find the players to go with these guys. But, um Connor McDavid's three goals Autumn, all in Game two this season against the connected, scored a hat trick and boy, what a game. It was two amazing highlight real gold, all three goals and great goals, but to real highlight real goals. But teams they're figuring so far anyway. I mean, it's only two other games but three other games, but he's scoreless in his other games. Is my point can so I'll expect to see more intimate David. Unfortunately, coming to Toronto on a throne tomorrow night. And it's from just north of Toronto. And they usually seem to play well when they're they're back in their old digs there, but really surprised with that. The orders also, you know, no real great backup goaltending, so they've been riding costume and so far leaving costume. It's not a great starter, so Expresses their backup. He's injured and so not a lot of faith in the third string there, and so already you're in a bit of a hole there. I know it's short season, but for you You know, it's just like baseball. You can't win it in early season, But, boy, you sure can't dig yourself a hole and moving so little surprised with the others. Vancouver I'm really surprised about as well. They've been going between Hopi and damn Coke, and I think we're seeing You know, I talked with Jacob Markstrom and he went to Calgary can and that's one of the reasons why we like Calgary to make the playoffs, right? It is because Cause, of course, marks from a great goaltender got scooped up by Calgary Kristanna, another great hockey player defenseman, also with the conduct for years and years, got drafted by them..

"I mean that gets our attention and it creates more of the buzz reynard talking earlier in the podcast about the influence of the graybeards of the trial. May maybe even around the league a little bit and lyon matters. You've got jumbo. Wayne simmons bogosian. You mentioned jason spencer. How involved were you in that process of maybe dates back to acquire jake muslim where you recognize. Look we're still a young team are young so bring in these experienced guys now like joe forton could and probably will make a pretty big difference. I mean there's there's you describe young a bunch of different ways and some people would just use young as an excuse or or a bit of a crutch and to me That's not what this is about anytime you can like. I am foremost you've got to be able to play because it doesn't matter Who you are what your name is like. If you don't feel like you're contributing to the team in your corner of the team you get kleiner you get quite in the dressing room. You'll get quieter on the ice. So so we all recognize that that you have to have an important role and you have to feel good about your game to have a presence. In to have an impact on the mariners into matthews and in the young players in our organization that are still maybe not even in our lineup. Maybe not even making the leafs but get to see what these guys doing the gym every day. And get to see what these guys do. Practice every day So it's incredibly important. What what i would say to. Everyone is You know we we believe in balance. And i think that you're constantly seeking that out just the nature of the way that you build things in that you build. Nhl teams You don't always have the balance that you're seeking Like instantly and so. I think that You know constantly trying to move you're constantly trying to improve You're constantly trying to make your team better Other teams are are trying to be better than you trying to knock you a knock you down and and that's the nature of the competition. But i think that you know everything we did in this offseason Was meant to do to add more balance and get make ourselves a team. That not only. We've we've had some or some regular season success and we haven't had the kind of playoff success that we now think that we're capable of. I think that it's just trying to get over that hump get to that next level and you know the players that we've drafted developed Are great players and they want it. They love being maple leafs They you know. I've seen not only one difference. I've really seen here as a lot of ontario guys wanting to come home wanting to play for the leafs Wanting to be a part of that. So that's exciting. But ultimately everything gets decided on on.

"And so his his age. Probably you can multiply it forward a little bit now however vancouver had myers hughes schmidt adler and then jamie benn and a free untested totally untested players like. How is that going to work. It's not and so they get hammock in there and now you've got hammock to play with us right. That's nate schmidt's a good player so really good. Gifted is a great word that they were gifted. So now you've got schmidt playing with adler and now you know in some form. And then you've got myers with probably lady their first round pick from a few years ago who seems to have come around the corner injury wise and play wise. Now you look at the blue light and you go man. I could see that this was a good signing for them. Now i don't know drags you know this like. They can't make it official till they put. Michael furlan lt. I correct correct. And that's the league has stepped in on that too by the way right frank. Seravalli was doing some reporting on social media and whatnot. Where they're saying okay. You need to disclose us and you need to file that contract otherwise roster that you have today is the one that you're going to work with Because it is a form of cap circumvention. Right and i believe. That's why the saint louis blues did what they did in announcing hoffman. So again as we're recording this. Maybe it will be announced when people are listening. Furlan has been placed on lt. Ira that's the wiggle room for. Jim banning in the to make the one year deal. Travis helmet worked. It looks like eriksson is going to be either on a taxi squad. Or i guess that's where he'll be so a million dollars comes off to cap one point seven five. That's a you know. That's ed pebble in the shoe of cannock fans out here. That's for sure is that and they're just you know they've seen enough of of what didn't work but they're still got you know they still got some clogs in the salary cap there but this this whole division is going to is going to be a bit of a scramble and i think we all know it's gonna be really interesting but vancouver's okay i i don't think they're calgary. I don't think they're toronto. I don't think they're montreal. But i think they're in that group with edmonton winnipeg. And kinda you know. It's a in my opinion. It's going to be three team scuffle to see who gets in you mentioned. We had a brief conversation with corey. Perry and fully fits into that category too. But i call it the collection graybeards right and it seems like veteran players players was down in cup experience just experienced period of always mattered. So let's let's twist this in a different way. But i look at what the toronto maple leafs have done. Here and man. I'm intrigued by it. I am and i think this goes back to the jake. Muhsin trade with the la kings where they went. Okay we're acquiring this piece and then they realize okay. Muslims pretty good defense than but manny's good and he's good in the bench. He's good with the media and you know they'd special there again The experience factor they bring in jumbo joe thornton and they bring in wayne simmons. So now it's become more than two incidents or just trying to mix things up a little bit right..

"That's in all the divisions, which I That's Why another reason why I'm really looking forward to like the East there. But I think you're gonna see a lot more fighting in the NHL this year because of the amount of game they're playing with each other. But to me, look, police went out. They got tougher and they needed to do that. We've been saying that for years. I mean, all of us pundits here and drunk. That's one thing trying to use me known for having a tough team. Right? And, you know, Tie Domi, Shane course and right, Gerry Roberts. They were a tough team. And they did that in the off season, so they took that they went. God. Doctor goes insane Image of free agent that signs your story and I thought was a great time They need the leadership. They need that spirit. They need that energy, especially on the bench. There, Uh, Wayne Simmons, I think is going to be one of the best signings of the off of the season for any team. Um, you know Wayne's him into that tough guy who's been playing hurt for years on, you know, really like somebody read an article and I said, This kid is country strong. You know you could go to the gym a lot. But it's amazing How strong is that? He's tall and lanky, which usually don't have that combination of country strong and tall and lanky, But that's Wayne Simmons and made his living in front of the net. And Toronto need that. So I think that is a sign Jimmy V. C. They went and then of course, they got TJ Brodie or of the unrestricted free agent out of Calgary. And so I think Toronto is going to be they'll be first or second in that division I I expect them to win that division and it's about time they went out and got some great to match with the skill. Right. So you said Toronto, you said you thought Vancouver is gonna make it Who are the other two that are going to make it? I would think Calgary's got to be up there. And what about Ed Minton? Yeah. So, you know, a lot of people think Montreal's gonna make it. Montreal got great goaltending and Carey price. Of course they find Jake Allen. I just don't know who is going to score goals for much real. You know, like Munch Munch real. They had a good run last year. I think they surprised a lot of people. But I just don't know who is going to score goals. I love Shae Webber. I always have ever since the world juniors But you know what? He's just He's a year older and compressed schedule. He's playing that much more. And so you know Josh Anderson they traded for That would tell me. Anderson's had a tough time staying healthy over his career. S so I just don't know the score. I think it's gonna be Toronto coming over the North Cal agreeing that Minton And Vancouver. Alright. There you go. Yeah, we'll see if it Montreal can get going to tar. Now They're top left wing and Suzuki toe fully there as well. But we'll wait and see what they could do. All right, only have about four minutes to go so gotta focus in on the West. Of course, the Vegas cold nights. And you know Marc Andre Fleury. Still there? Robin Leonard getting the big contract. Carlson Cody Glass elevating now, but patch already very solid need to keep him healthy. Martin marches so has been outstanding. His tenure there with the Gold Knights and Mark Stone to me, is really that guy. He's a score, but he's also that great you talk about. I need to keep guys like Riley Smith healthy as well. Pietrangelo, the biggest signing, I think in a long time outside after getting stone I thought was big, so they get mad patch already Stone and then now they signed to Tran Djalo on in a couple minutes. Tell me about this Vegas Golden Knights team because they have depth. There's no question in between the pipes and elsewhere. And I know You know they're looking toe get the whole enchilada this year if they can. Well, yeah, The future is now for for your Vegas Golden Knights can I mean, you know the future is now right. You exactly patch already. It was not old. We certainly young anymore, Mark Stone. Same thing. He's in his twenties, and I think he should be your next captain. But, you know, you know To me. They would love to trade flurry and get rid of that million dollar contract and get that seven million spend elsewhere but always going to take it. I mean, you probably could have traded it if you want to pay two million to that. Andre Still, May Who knows some team May I come in injuries and get on the horn? There? Exciting letters real solid. I think Robin Leonard, the guy that future I know that you guys love Blurry and you should But the difference between Fleurian Lennar's about four inches in about £30 And you know, Robert Lennar. Well, I don't know if you know this Robin Lehner in the offseason, used to anyway trained with UFC fighters. He is a big, big kid. He's a solid guy. I just think he's you know, flurries. Best years are behind him. And just not quite as Gerald Bulls. He once was. I still love Fleury always will. But I I know that their pay. I would think that if they could traded that $7 million contract Made some room in there. They certainly would have, but definitely, you know, Vegas look in Vegas is division toe lose in Vegas in ST Louis, or certainly the pride of this division. What about Colorado? What about the Avalanche? Yeah. You got the avalanches? Well, but the I mean, you're looking at teams like the Avalanche. I love the Avalanche and all the people of predicting them to win the cup. But here you're looking at a team that Had goaltending issues last year and they didn't go out and get a goaltender in the offseason cat and they may actually you know they may win the division. But when it comes to playoff time You still got the same issue group hours a good goalie, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy. And this is a year when you had a bunch of goalies the off season and you didn't go to do anything. You didn't get me backup for him. So to me, that was a little surprising that Zach didn't do that. But there was wind to cut two years ago and then Bennington has an off year. And then they lose doesn't do so. Well and now you got Vegas with great goaltending, but they're not really deep up the middle. Every team seems to have their flaw. You got the three? Well, yeah, You're right. And those three teams. They're certainly the pride of that. But you certainly have your flaws with each of those teams that you could pick apart. Okay, so let me so I got Vegas, ST Louis and Colorado X. We only have about a minute to go. Who's the 14? There? You saw the King's The King's close. Very strongly. Eyes, eh? Is it San Jose is in Arizona who made the postseason, But God? You know, ripped apart, Uh, real quick. Just give me that 14 You know you could. It's going to be to me. I think it's going to come down to between San Jose in Minnesota. Um, e And I think Santa's is due for a bounce back here. He's got too much talent on that team. Still, Carlson should be healthy because he had a long time off Can I mean they didn't They didn't play in the play in In place since March, so everybody should be healthy on that team. "Time to a lesser skilled player. Taking it away that ice time from higher skill players but understanding how that would work in the end. A blake coleman for instance right at the trade deadline skates well enough. But he's an edgy player. That's they brought him a boat bogosian guy who's career was basically over stayed home but mostly a tough defenceman luke. Schenn right. couldn't play on the kings so to speak everyone will say like and you can go through those types of players but it's the fit barclay goodrow golden so and players that are there nhl players but they the teams that traded them to tampa bay. Certainly were not in the same category as tampa bay. Well beyond that maybe. They had squeezed whatever they could. Get out of those players You know. I look at a guy like blake coleman like. What's he going to do on a devils team. That isn't gonna compete all right. Well let's see if we can get a return out of it barclay goodrow. What's he gonna do. Wanna san jose sharks team. That isn't gonna compete are. Let's get out of it. They got a first round pick. You know it was. You know thirty first overall with sharks. That's the thirty first best prospect in that year's draft. Maybe maybe the best example of and i hear it now and just my opinion but at the time of the trade. First rounder control. I what's it what makes it stanley cup ring. Yeah and it's still being talked about now with the kinks brayden. Schenn wayne simmons let two stanley cups. Whichever way you look at it whichever way to knock on effect yeah i mean. The kings ended up winning two stanley. Cups okay brayden. Schenn keeps going wayne's at the end of his career brain just wanna stanley cup copa. That doesn't matter to me. I would make that deal a million times in a row if you can guarantee me to stanley cups. It's done and it's done again and again and again and that's why i my next question is going to be what. What can the kings learn or take away from the playoffs. And you know even from the winning team i look at the moves over the last little while and you know under under dean lombardi they were swinging for the fences trying to hit that magic combination. And you know what they struck out. That's that's the analogy right. You know they were trying to hit. They wanted me lan lucia to be a part of a playoff run that year. You know they. They made moves that in hindsight okay. Yeah you could scratch your head but you know what if if they paid off look like geniuses right know you to take a chance in this business illegal chuck. I think we both agreed at the time. And i still believe this and i'm going to sell. I'm sure a lot of kings fans are going. Say that.
