"I feel like I will always love this sound now. Just get so excited what I what I hear. Shuttle they shuttle has cleared the tower. So if I was in the crowd Mel in Nineteen one in Florida and I saw that lodge what would I have seen? What would I have noticed? We'll for people at the time you know the black and white space shuttle Columbia. It looked really strange. It looked like an airplane kind of a that airplane and the country was used to bell shaped capsule that the Apollo astronauts took to the moon in the nineteen sixties and Seventies. Yeah those Apollo missions the astronauts in those capsules at the top of like a long rocket The Saturn five right right right and so I talked to Wayne Hale. He was a NASA junior flight controller. In one thousand nine hundred and he'd just come to NASA. He was twenty six years old and he actually watched the shuttle launch on TV in his bedroom. Because he'd just come off a prelaunch shift at Houston's mission control and he'd been trying to catch a few hours of sleep and he remembers being just startled by the brightness of the space shuttle launch and the speed people my generation grew up with like the Apollo missions and the Saturn five. Just look like it took for ever to get clear the tower you know. It's very slow and the shuttle just with those solid rocket motors just POW Outta town. So this nineteen eighty-one launch with its airplane. Like was a big technical leap. Can we say the same thing about tomorrow's launch in some ways it kind of goes back to a more Apollo style way of doing things? I mean. Basically you've got a little bell shaped capsule on top of you know thin rocket but unlike the days of Apollo spacex once it's capsules and rockets to be reusable to cut down on costs. I mean that's been the big goal of space x from the beginning to basically bring down the cost of spaceflight dramatically. And so that was something that the show was supposed to do to the space shuttle was reusable. And at the time. That was like a really you know novel idea the space shuttle. If you've been in it which I have. Oh I got to see space. Shuttle discovery and know the cockpit looked like sort of like an airplane cockpit. You might have seen you know when you were kid. Like peeking in the airplane cockpit it's just like crammed full of switches and dials but the space x capsule is actually controlled with a like a sleek touch screen. It looks very very modern. Yeah so this. Partnership between SPACEX and NASA some people in the space industry think like this launch kind of marks a new era of space travel. How do you feel about that? Well you know you've got this private space company operating kind of a taxi service for NASA and the whole idea behind. Nasa's commercial crew program is that it would focus NASA would focus on deep space exploration like getting back to the moon or beyond and meanwhile going to low earth orbit which is just two hundred miles up. You'd rely on. Companies like SPACEX and Boeing to with its star liner. That it's developing and so the idea is that you save tax payer money and let NASA focus on the big stuff and the thing about having these sort of like you know. Taxi Service idea. Is that people. Outside of NASA will be able to be paying customers to this opening up of space as a accessible travel destination. Afford to buy a ticket. I mean there's already been talk of Tom. Cruise catching a ride on a SPACEX capsule to go up to the space station and shoot like an action movie up there. That sounds right. That sounds very American but again when I hear stuff like this I think whoa like history is really repeating itself. I mean there were similar ambitions for the space shuttle back in one thousand nine hundred eighty one that Guy Wayne Hale I talked to. He went onto director for dozens of shuttle missions and he was the Space Shuttle Program Manager and he remembers that back. Then there was all this talk about. How the space shuttle would revolutionize space travel? I remember that was part of the shuttle we were gonNA take Walter Cronkite. My goodness we're GONNA have journalists in space we're going to take entertainers I use. This is going to really date me. We'RE GONNA take John Denver into space. I have to say I would like to have seen what John Denver would get up to and outerspace. I'm just saying I didn't. I didn't realize that that was the idea that like all different types of people are going to be able to go up. Yeah even teachers right okay. So as you remember. There was the challenger disaster that whole citizens and space thing kind of ended with that disaster and it turns out you know the shuttle was more dangerous and also more expensive than people had expected. It just flew far less often than NASA had originally hoped. Yeah I mean are there. Any safety concerns about this. Spacex spacecraft. Well there's been a whole flight test with no people on board. I mean they sent this vehicle. Up last year with a mannequin and it went to the International Space Station and successfully splashdown later. They also did a test of systems earlier this year. They basically deliberately destroyed a rocket. You know they failed the launch system right to test out the astronaut escape system so none of that was true for the space shuttle. There was no test flight for that one without a crew when astronauts John Young and Bob Crippen Flu. That thing in one thousand nine hundred one. It had never flown before NASA had never flown anything like that before. Yeah so the safety situation is hopefully a little better at least well-tested now basically. Yeah so okay. Any other nineteen eighty one. Final thoughts comparisons the launch will be happening from the very same launchpad in Florida. But when the astronauts on the crew Dragon Doug Hurley and Bob Bank in return to Earth. They'll splash down in the ocean rather than coasting to a stop on a landing strip like the shuttle dead Gotcha but they will have some familiar cargo. There's this American flag that flew on the first shuttle mission as well as the last shuttle mission it's been hung up in you know in the International Space Station for years waiting for crew to launch from the US and bring it back home So I think like the big obvious thing to think about is like in one thousand nine hundred one. There was not a global pandemic. That ended things. Do you know how the coronavirus is going to affect this launch. Nasa has definitely been discouraging people from coming to Florida to gather in big crowds to watch the launch. I mean that's kind of a bummer for NASA. This is a huge deal for them and they're basically telling people you know stay home. Yeah SPACEX and NASA have had to take all sorts of precautions with the astronauts during their training Elon. Musk has seemed kind of dismissive. A little bit of the sermons about the pandemic. He's made some comments on twitter that have been critical of stay at home precautions. Recall in early March. He tweeted that the coronavirus panic was dumb right but the company's Chief Operating Officer Gwen shot. Well she said. The astronauts have had to wear masks and gloves and limit. Who they're around and you know I talked to Doug Hurley the astronaut a few weeks ago and he was saying that you know even though they're focused on their training like they were still super aware of everything that was happening around them and you know concerned about their families and like the whole world. So you know it's definitely it's definitely been thing this time around. Yeah absolutely all right now. You played us in with countdown is their song. We should go out on today. I mean I don't know I'm sure that SPACEX will have some sort of musical component to this launch fairly certain about that when it did a test flight with a big rocket not too long ago they put a Red Tesla convertible into space. I don't know if you remember crazy. And during that launch as they unveiled this bright red car and space with the blue and white earth down below they blasted. David Bowie's life on Mars. You know so. Maybe something like that. Because that is the ultimate goal of spacex. You know to make space flight common and affordable enough. So that eventually we we colonize Mars.

"But of course, the astronaut was not there because he had hung up and left and he shared the story of the slip up. He shared it to a Dutch broadcaster when they were talking about Neil Armstrong's moon landing. So I'm sure there's just a fun time to share really embarrassing stories. We're talking about other famous astronauts, but he noted that it's actually easy to call earth from space. There's a time delay. I'm sure, but according to Wayne HALE who served as a flight director at Nasr's missing mission control. He told the news that astronauts, the international space station have been able to make calls as they pleased for more than a decade now and the phone system uses voice over internet protocol, which is the same that people use for like internet, calls Skype. Yes. I mean, I guess that does make sense cents. You're up near all the satellite, again, it should be more complicated. And I feel like the the moral of the story is should you? Call nine one one from space. Don't hang up. Yes. Your mistake, which be whole areas. One what your emergency first off what what dispatch answers where? I guess I don't know. Yeah. I mean mission control got it from Houston. So what's your I'm sorry wrong number? I mean, you might not even know you're getting to call from space. Yeah. Interesting. I have never really thought about that. But the capability to make these calls was built into the space station with the rise of internet phone calls. And it's like they're able to do. So they can just dial up anybody that the astronauts want, and apparently because of that a lot of people have gotten calls from space. Not I have never got at least not that. I'm aware of maybe that's where my robo like telemarketer calls from there. I don't know. I don't know outsourcing. Well. It frightens me. I don't know. What's out there? If you are wondering, though, it doesn't work the other way, you can't accident. Call the space station and s-era mentioned the lesson is if you act on the call nine one from space stay on the line, which you should do from earth as well. If you're making an accidental emergency call or nine one one make sure that you stay on the line. Tell them that it was an accident. Otherwise, they might assume there's an emergency and dispatch personnel. Which is how you want them to work Flynn happened. But want them to come out for what's not an emergency? Wasting their time. And apparently this astronaut Andre had a bit of sense of humor about it. Because he he joked that he wouldn't have been disappear was disappointed that they didn't come up to see him. Which is awkward nine one one. What's your emergency? I realize astronaut, but although could you imagine if you were the cop, firefighter, EMT, whatever if they're like, we have a call from space. Okay holiday. I'm sure they have much better channels for you know, talking about emergencies and space, but. I would have a siren on it. They would have maybe a space. Police fire dog. That'd be awesome. And then they'd get there. And there's nothing, you know. That's okay. Space. It's okay. It's taxpayer money. Also ensuring that it was the international space station and the US got it. I don't know if that's all space calls for the international space station. Bill one country true nine nine nine. I think is in it's nine nine nine somewhere. I have no idea is that Britain. Sorry international people that I'm getting your codes mixed up of true. So I guess if he had called any other emergency line he would have gotten a different country. Interesting. Well, I mean, that's a good for them. Well, sorry. Good job. Andre. You got a good joke on their our next story is about the college mascots, the Texas longhorns and the Georgia bulldog. This is from the university of Texas the Austin longhorns, their mascot is Bevo who is a long horn steer. He weighs one thousand six hundred pounds..

"The next one will be Alon had this to save regarding the risk, quote will be extremely intense early flights are especially dangerous, and there's a lot of new hardware on quote. So basically like don't be surprised if this thing just fucking explodes. It's going to explode. So one test flight where it might explode and they go right into human testing. Right. The one just just one just the one guaranteed failure. Who's next you know, that you're pissed if you're next up. Some people thought that NASA might be upset by Musk's warnings about a possible test failure because they they paid for, you know, low low likelihood of failure. But apparently, they probably agree with him. Nasa consultant, Wayne HALE said, I think it's impossible to fly new space vehicle without learning. Something significant that you did not expect second flights are only slightly less risky. Mr. musk is definitely well advised to lower expectations. A second flight. Definite, desks. Third flight. Maybe like like who's wife's going to be a widow at the end of the second flight things. Like that. Would you learn right as Alon musk and this NASA guy, just two megahertz telling you that like, oh, we'll definitely kill you without thinking twice about it in the name of space progress. So it might never be my never be safe. But we're gonna get some up there. Eventually eventually, we'll have to kill about fifty may maybe a hundred who knows I lying if I said that the pictures of the spaceship on launchpad, aren't really awesome. So he's dragon and falcon how could it not look fucking bad ass looks pretty cool looks pretty cool, but taking it to the internet. Tina right is not happy. She says go home, we need a wall. And that was oh, yeah. That's basically that I tried to look at comments for this one. It's like a bunch of people who are like scientists who are like actually discussing like what the whole of the space cares spacecraft is made out of. And then there's like random people who just pop in saying, you need more liberals to shoot up to Mars. I think they're taking it all wrong here. I think that they're too focused on the wall between US Mexico. It's already it's already too late to many Mexicans of gotten. Let's get up to Mars early build the wall before we colonize Mars fresh start. There you go. It's like, hey is it time to go to Mars yet? What was the wall Bill? All the shame of America on Mars. Yeah. We'll wait till the walls done. Yeah. I'm not going up until that Walston. So let's get to some things. We didn't some stories win and get to good news for snowbirds looking for cheap vacations. Seven men have been killed in a shooting attack at a bar and Mexico's Caribbean..

"Our thanks to our expire for their support of this show and relax them. All right. We have a sort of a topic that got sprung on us the last minute and the topic is Hubble trouble. Hubble trouble. Hubble space telescope. It's been up there a long time. It's been service by the space shuttle bunch of times, but we don't have space shuttle anymore and that led to everybody thinking, well, now that last fix was the last fix that can be done. And hopefully it will still work for a while, but Hubble is having some serious trouble Hubble trouble right now because it's in safe mode, which you would think is like a good thing. But it's like, as we know from covering other. Other space mission. Safe mode is basically something bad happened. And the next thing that happens is the computers basically kind of like curl up in a little ball and not do anything, and let wait for the humans to tell them what to do to try and fix the problem because there is a gyroscope gyroscopes fail after a while and this gyroscope failed. People had been expecting it. So they predicted that this failure would happen and here it is. It has. It has failed. Yeah, it's so in safe mode and the team is working to kind of figure out where to go from here. So this is very much like a breaking story as we co-ord- this. So if he was going to a few days, there's probably new news going on heavily good news. It does seem like they could extend the life of the telescope, even going down to one gyroscope. Hubba hubba got six gyroscopes. They replace them all in two thousand nine. In that last service mission, it needs three to work in its optimal configuration. Right now, there are only two that they say are good. Although they had one that that had been problematic and they shut it down and there there is some investigation of the idea that they may spin it back up and see if they can get it can work through its issues and use it as the third gyroscope. But the fallback is this one Giro setting, which is, you know, it's less optimal, but rather than going from three to two, they go from three to one and they keep the other one is a backup. And that means that they can use that one gyroscope until it dies. And then they flip to the backup and they can use that because you're just trying to extend the life of the Hubble space telescope, so we don't know what's going on, but it's not like it's it's about to die. They've got other gyroscopes. They're just in this mode where they're trying to figure out, are we going to try to get back. That other gyroscope two to three or we going to call it and say, okay, we're now in the end of the life of the mission where we're going to be in single gyro mode, which limits what we can do. And when that one dies will use the last one and then we're done. There's a, there's a tweet from Wayne HALE who was the space shuttle program manager for for thirty two years at NASA, sort of sort of a harsh tweet to repair Hubble. You need to train repair crew in Lewis, orbit with the space, craft with.

"Yeah. And that was deaf. Laid out at roadmap that we saw where you know, that's the first time that they've put real renders of commercial vehicles on the launch plan for the gateway interspersed between the four crew launches that happen to support gateway. So that was good to see on that graphic. Another thing I noticed was Wayne HALE is on the council, and he was even talking about this week that in the past he's been very critical of gateway. Read a lot of his writing on that over time, but he's coming around to the program. I'm not sure if you've picked up any of that crowd of people who were skeptical year two years ago, but are coming around to it now and why they may have had such a shift in their mentality. Is it maybe that they're seeing the momentum behind it, or they're seeing the fact that NASA is ready to embrace a different way of thinking about how even acquire the parts of the gateway. What do you think that is? That's changing tied their gateway. I'm trying to remember what wing said about why his views changed. The gateway has changed because until now it's been, it was a gateway to Mars. I had it was the, it was deep space gateway with a deep space transport, and it was gonna be part of this architecture for getting to Mars. And back in Gerson Meyer did talk about the at this Nath meeting. And again, this whole idea that you don't need a spacecraft. It's gonna go from earth Mars and back to earth. You may wanna come back to the gateway because you can use the earth's gravity Nunes gravity's slow down to get to the gateway, and you don't have to find some way to build this miraculously. Chill that's gonna protect you. If you're trying to make a direct return from Mars. So I think that it's still is part of this architecture of going to Mars. But the focus of it on the moon, I think is what's new since they Trump administration came in and made the moon part of the program. And I think the earlier presentations that I've heard about gateway host in still talked about it a lot that this neck meeting as it orbits can change and so can. Support opperations on the moon and all these different places. It's not just one six job if you move it using this solar electric propulsion system and and maybe that's what people are coming to understand now that can support lunar missions various actively. It's not just something for each base. So I've got some other random topics on the list here unless you've got other gateway thoughts. I was thinking about moving into some commercial crew questions. So we've seen now we've got cruise announced we've got tentative dates for at least some of these launches coming up. It does feel like we're getting to the point we're going to start seeing these launches happen, but I'm curious if you think that there are any. Knock on affects of the delays that we have seen up until this point. Obviously, they're fixed price contract, so we, it's not extra money, which is something that congress keeps forgetting. And some of these hearings they always ask, what are the additional costs?.

"Now bob that they're just incredibly incredibly self frustrating yes i you know there was a story today about a meeting of the net the new nasa advisory council with bill gerston meyer who is head of chief of he's chief of human spaceflight at nazis basically in charge of the ryan program and this advisory council is put together a bunch of people who mostly industry people i didn't even bother suggesting my name because i knew they i'm not i'm not i have no clout with the industry and they don't want me there but they in this meeting he was asked by by wayne hale you might know that name he was the guy the engineer who said columbia's got problems when it was in all known to listen to him and he eventually left nassar and he was now on this adviser commissioned committee and so bill is giving a talk about s l s and how it's wonderful and i was going to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and he'll ask him wait a minute why don't we just simply by a falcon heavy's that cheaper we could launch like a dozen more that doesn't like forty for what we're paying for s l s and get things going instead of having to go with us unless it's gonna take more years and cost so much more money compare the numbers here bob adsell space x believes that a falcon heavy will cost ninety thousand dollars per launch a million dollars prolonged ninety million dollar thank you ninety million ninety thousand little low we'll get there eventually million for launch and s l s is estimated at a billion plus per launch three billion per launch is more accurate number the other way to look at it as a cost a half a half a billion dollars to develop falcon heavy it's costing fifty billion to develop a better idea is to shop at spacex and the response response was well no we really can't do it the nassar's exploration program requires the anouk unique capabilities sos quoting gersten my i think it's going to it's still going to be a large volume monolithic pieces that are going to require an s l s kind of capability to get them into space now this is absurd because those large volume monolithic pieces that goes to my mentions are basically you know.

"Lot which the big project and they planned a few other big projects like chandra but they made the they had the sense to keep them under a little bit of control so they got launched and then they also supplemented them with lots and lots of small relatively inexpensive telescopes capitalism good example of that though came late so they got a lot of strong when what came along with web basically eight the whole budget i haven't been able to build a launch anything really very little astronomical telescopes built now since since the mid lay offs and they won't be any built for a long time because that's going to build w i even though the trump administration wants to cancel this is going to be a follow on on web which means it's gonna take twenty plus years to build it's already over budget it's only in the design phase so this is just a real disaster but you know you you say john there's a competition because that's the lesson web it's trying to go for twenty years to get launched and let's now talk about s l s you want to go for s l s bob you've said the magic acronym this is the space launch system that has been delayed and delayed until the first flight without it's supposed to be the big booster to take manned space back to lower orbit and beyond to the moon to the to the mars colony and the asteroid and yet it very much reminds me of this delay tactic and over budget tactic with the web telescope they're matching parts of nasa which is why you are correct in criticizing nastase inability to follow through on its own plans it's so big now bob that they're just incredibly incredibly self frustrating yes i you know there was a story today about a meeting of the net the new nasa advisory council with bill gerston meyer who is head of chief of he's chief of human spaceflight at nasties basically in charge of the orion program and this advisory council put together a bunch of people who mostly industry people i didn't even bother suggesting my name because i knew they i'm not i'm not i have no clout with the industry and they don't want me there but they in this meeting he was asked by by wayne hale you might know that name he was the guy the.
