"But we love singularly great performers one and only performers. Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan. Ella Fitzgerald. Uh, Frank Sinatra. You know, And you all have your own favorites, but We love Elvis Presley. We love singularly. Talented people. Who seemed to break all barriers. And are widely respected because they can do what other people have tried to do better than anyone else. And You know, you think about Bo Jackson. You think about Pete Maravich as a college player. You think about Bobby Orr? You know, there's so many Singularly great. Athletes. That we've enjoyed watching and when they come It's a rare treat man. It's a You know, it's a rare treat and Otani has reached that level with people. He really has And he is a ticket seller. And he is a buzz creator. And he is a juice guy. I mean, the guy that that has electricity and Charisma all around him. And he's fun to follow and fun to talk about and fun to watch perform. So You know, I embraced those athletes in any sport. That can make you say, Wow. I mean that That's what we talked about. For years now with Steph Curry. Steph Curry is a legitimate wow, a lot of nights. Lot of nights. He's wow. Tiger Woods was wow. And you just don't get Them every day. So selling Shohei Otani. Is real. You know, it's it's not like what we're used to trying to make us believe. That all this guy needs a day. Oh, he's not hurt. Oh, he's that. You know, we just is selling us all the time. We get sold over and over again and not just in the sports world. We get sold in everything. You know we're getting beaten over the head. Well, why we have to watch the Olympics, but that's their job. NBC's got a lot invested. The advertisers want us to watch it and NBC's got to find a way to make it appealing. So the ads have been numerous and they've been Blatant and they're doing their damnedest to make sure that we Fill our time during the couple weeks of the Olympics watching the Olympics, that's their job. But The nice thing. About Otani is they're selling us Otani. He deserves it. He is all that you're right. You're not lying to us. You're not misleading us. You're not trying to Uh, to pull the wool over our eyes. You're saying that's legitimate opportunity to watch one of the greats play and guess what? We agree with you. You don't have to twist my arm. You don't have to twist my arm. You are all that. Let's go to Ah Ben in Florida. Who just hopped on the line will put them up before the break. Hi, Ben. How you doing? That's good. Thanks for taking the call. Sure. Listen, it's you know, I want to make a comment about autonomy. I mean, obviously having a A great season. Okay, but you know he played two years prior was nothing out of the ordinary. I mean, he's not the first guy to have an exceptional first after the year. Except that he's a two way guys. You know, after he plays this whole year, let's make a judgment on this guy after next year when the pictures get used to it. The way he hits, okay and see what he does. Okay, because in the past guys who've had one tremendous break out year after that, they go back to reality and then just an average player. I don't know. Many guys like that. And none of them, Uh, pitch in a hit. So you can throw cold water on Otani all you want, and you can predict that. All of the Pitchers will catch up with him. And you may well be right, but go sell that somewhere else right now. And just enjoy what we have. You know, It's very hard Look, and it's it's very telling about people's personality. Right even last night and talking about Cole. Some people quickly jumped on Twitter. All boy 129 pitches. He's going to be hurt. They're going to regret leaving him in. Other people were just enjoying the moment. Sam wasn't that awesome. It's nice to see a bulldog actually out there. We're back into the 19 sixties complete game. Bob Gibson You know Jim Palmer, Tom Seaver. Sandy Koufax were back to you know, uh, Bulldog mentality and competing again. This is great. Others immediately worried about an injury. That's the difference between people and I'm not saying either one's right or wrong. I'm just saying that you can tell about people's personality. How quickly they either go to one side. Enjoying the moment or the other side. Oh, boy, you know, he just 329. I bet you he doesn't make his next start. And that's you know, that's the way the world works 855 to 1 to four CBS More of your phone calls coming up. This is CBS Sports Radio. Expedient knows what happens when.

"It's a seven year contract. That turner has now. And so i guess they got some other guys to. They've already linked up. Kenny albert as their play by play guy eddie olczyk in their ray ferraro is also going to be part of it. I don't know if that means he's going to cut back on his tsn duties or not. Brian boucher in. There's also an analyst and leah hextall female play by play analyst. So they've got a nice little stable already early in the game here but Yeah i'd say wayne gretzky he would probably be giving ron maclean a break today saying he probably shouldn't say that and always ri- steak you know cooler with that stuff. Don't let it happen again and we move forward and i think what you'll probably get steve. He until now at the same time gretz gets it. He understands he under. He's always understood his role. He's always understood what's what's expected of him. What's expected of people. What what the fans deserve you know. He he understands that better than anyone. He's always had a great knack. Great street smarts. Great you know. He always has so. I think what he'll be able to do. Steve is he'll he'll be able to point out mistakes. He'll glaring mistakes turnovers and stuff like that. But i think you're you're going to see it done in a way that that he'll explain why that mistake happened You know 'cause we all look at it and go you know the the overtime winner in fourth game edmonton and winnipeg giveaway. Yeah it was a guy trying to throw it around desperation times anyway. It was giveaway guy. Picked it up ripped in scored the goal. I think wayne would point point out that you know yes. That's a turnover. But here's why here's what the guy was trying to do. Here's what he's thinking but you wouldn't want to that again. That's kind of how. I hear the tone of stuff going with wing yup. He's not going to bury anyone personally. Guarantee guarantee he's never you know he's he's not he's not going to say this guy should be on the fourth line and not the he might. I don't know he might tune in for sure. Big challenge for them those stevie. No i agree. It's a big challenge. And i don't know that i know what to expect at this stage. He will have to go down that that milbury lane a little. A johnny miller thing not be afraid to say the odd negative thing where it where it's needed because that's you know that's kind of what the viewer demands and Certainly the doors wide open. And i mean the paycheck speaks for itself the superstar name the biggest name in the history of hockey. That's huge for tnt to acquire. That said it's not an automatic that it'll be a success. I think about joe montana for example as an nfl analyst at just ten out he was not good so there will have to be Yeah they'll have to be some performance from wayne gretzky if that job is to be something that he stays with long-term so we wish obviously you know what they're looking for stevie because of the recent experience over the last..

Strategy Execution Results: Get in Gear Sean T. Ryan -

"Pretty good year here. It's just gotta clean. It's gotta to be whatever the case and it just works all the way through and and it's just find brilliant so let's just go right into right right right. I gear right. That's the first gear right right right here. Getting the right right. Let's what is what is right right right. What is that first gear. How does it connect to strategy. Let's talk about that real quick. Absolutely right right right is about having the right people in the right roles with the right capabilities and and so you know the the idea that you can have a strategy but without the right people it's going to be really hard to execute and if people don't have the right capabilities It's going to be hard to execute that strategy Or if you've got you have good people when We we knew we. We knew that we had this opportunity. We had just gotten into Refreshment putting the m you know in the plastic bottle water you know back in like nineteen ninety four ninety five and we could see that business taking off at that particular point in time coca cola and pepsi. Were not in the bottled water. Business business was just too small right but we also knew that there was a at the time with with our with our growth. We knew there was a point in time at which they were going to jump into the bottled water business and we also knew that we didn't actually have the talent to be able to compete against them effectively especially in in our leadership levels. And so you know right people in the right roles with the right capabilities. We knew we needed to go. Recruit different people who fit our strategy number one and number two who were gonna fit our values and our values around honesty integrity teamwork building respect The that were absolutely critical to us providing the leadership to our team that we were anticipated. We were going to need to have that five now. We we didn't know it was going to be five full growth over seven years at the time That that really just kind of happened but it happened because we did get. We did realize we needed a different capability of of leaders a previously. We had hired talent Pretty much off the street. Just technical-functional talent technical-functional talents important but leadership capabilities were hugely important. And so we had to really re gear and rethink. Who do we need to have on our team. How do we go find those people. And then how do we recruit and select them to be on the team to get the talent that we needed to be able to enable that success. Okay so something you say in this book right. Nobody exactly this way. But i'm gonna say you hire to the values. I mean you you hired to the values you'd because i think it's so easy to do in and by the way i appreciate. How much of a big fan. You are michael porter. Because i love competitive advantage and so i love that about you Just one thing. It's not the only thing. I i'd love several things about you but i think hiring values is something that we don't do very a at least in my experience. Coaching businesses is that. Sometimes we try. We're so focused in hiring this great talent that we're not hiring to our values of company in nor do we really know clearly what the values are our company and us us a pretty great questions here. You know what we stand for what we believe. In what are the broad boundaries. You want people to play within enable us to execute a strategy. I think those are really fundamental questions that every business needs to ask right up front. I agree a hundred percent in the way. I would describe it a little bit. Jay is i think there's always a gap in an organization between where you are and where you want to be in. We talked a lot about obviously strategy to houston results. We're talking about the business strategy. How do we position ourselves in the marketplace to be successful but to me. It's it's really kind of that strand of where do we need to be. And how do we need to get their. What's that business strategy. That gets us to that as wayne gretzky would have said you know. I don't skate where the puck is ice skate to where the puck is going to be. That's that's really. The essence of strategy is skating delaware. The puck going to be the. That's the business strategy. But i think there's an intertwined strands of dna with business strategy which we call the cultural strategy. What's what's the culture of the organization that we need to have is going to enable us to execute that business strategy and culture starts with the values. What are we. Stand the the questions that you've posed there. What are we stand for. What are we believe. In what are those widest parameters that. We want people to play within. What were those are values and you know there are some that are i think they should be they. They may not be but they should be almost universal honesty and integrity respect and by respect. I mean deep respect Not just respecting respecting people for who. They are for the diverse. You know background that they bring to the table respecting them as human beings in and trust and trustworthiness i think are universal but but then there's some that can be particular to an organization based upon their strategy. There there are some organizations that have to be absolutely cutting edge innovative right constantly thinking outside the box and then there may be other organizations where it's not about the most innovative you know cutting edge bleeding edge organization but you have to have incredible continuous improvement. We're getting a little bit better tomorrow. And then again day after it again the day after is the key to success will depending upon those those valley. What you need to be successful does drive some of the component of the values of the organization right right and then that drives who you need to look for. Do you need to look for people. Who reminds her. Just you know. They're buzzing all the time and they are the cutting edge bleeding edge creators ordinary people. Who have that continuous improvement mentality. And so the business strategy drives the cultural strategy which drives who you need to go find to help you execute that strategy again. You know you. i'm going to quote you again. You said Critical issues to be clear upfront. About what values. Your organization needs to support the execution of your strategy.

Control Your Own Success by Taking Advantage of a Global Economic Shift

"And you believe in and by the way i wholeheartedly agree with you that we are in the midst of a global economic shift can you expound upon this for fire nation. I'm going to share something. Tony said in the simplest thing but he said humpty dumpty broke and you put it back together in the same way and i sometimes like listening. We both appreciate tony baton partner dear friend but sometimes it's really deep what he says and sometimes it seems really simple but it really has more meaning is the world is completely shifted. And it's not going back to the way it was and what a world shifts that much when cultures shift that much when we go from in person to online virtual exponentially grows and technology from that continues to grow. We're not going back to the way we were. And that means there's a huge global economic shift happening and money is flowing from different people to to new industries flowing out of old industries into new. And i just believe that if we don't Wayne gretzky the skater. He's from canada. Originally played here in the states to one of the best skaters of all time hawking matter wherever you're listening in the world he was asked once Why he's so good at hockey or white. How'd you do so well or win another championship. He said some people unfortunately skate to where the puck was some people in most skate to where the puck currently is he said i got really lucky and figured out had escaped where the puck was going and i think if we don't observe that there's an economic and a global shift we're going to escape where the puck was aware it is and those that get to come out ahead are going to where the puck is going and that's why we'll scream for mountaintops. It's time to explore time to investigate. See were money is flowing. See what industries are growing. Where where. The revolutions. The breakthroughs the the category kings the ground swell the wave. And i think when you do that. It's not as difficult as you think. Because most people sit on their hands in times like these they wait for someone else to fix it and just like we're talking about if you wait for someone else to fix it. Someone else will own your

No i don't like this guy was a big soccer fan and like a real big soccer fan like i. Don't i wanna follow soccer. I do. I have team but like we're just not that good so i don't talk about soccer that much now not that big an analyst for soccer as a whole soccer story that i had i was a kid. That'd be for a different episode. One day anyways go back to wayne gretzky so when he came by i just about lost it but i was like okay. Hello mr lewis. Licensed mr gretzky right. Yes and then. He went outside. He was just about to leave. He's do you guys want the. Do you want a picture. Only yes wanna picture. Thank he asked us now. I live in augusta georgia in augusta with augusta. That's why wayne gretzky was in town so with augusta. I i if you don't know the story and i'm kind of tying masters. Dustin johnson is wayne gretzky son-in-law okay so every year they come by and i just pass you code. I don't know they came by or not. I'm sure he did. But i just don't know if he actually came by and like could go inside the masters. I don't know how it works. But what i has way and i said wayne so or i think said mr gretzky. I don't know either one. But like gods wayne gretzky so like so is doesn't johnson. Is he gonna win. This is fused back like well. I hope so. I'm tired of coming here. Lean with a green jacket. Those exact word was like like wayne gretzky and now what. Dustin johnson violently got his his green jacket and it was in the way riley. There's no fans roy to see it. But he had such a one of a kind round as far as four rounds of golf like he finally did it. He has a history of kind of last Last round is kind of falling apart. A little bit this a little bit. I'm not saying they a but like he's doesn't always finish like he should leave. But can i just want to say congrats. Dustin johnson and wayne I think he maybe you're you're not come back next year because the masters winners automatically welcome back for To play the masters again so i automatically can be terrible all year being still play in the masters so wayne i look forward to if i do see you next year. That'd be great. If i don't whatever that's fine but congrats a doesn't johnson winning the green jacket and i'm glad you had tell a story wayne gretzky because it's one of my favorite stories and that i have been athens. "At the end of the day everyone was going to criticize the whole benching. Wasn't there. you weren't at the facility watching this team. You weren't at the facility seen to a play and practice like he. Weren't you see what. We saw. On sundays and thursdays and saturdays or whatever whatever game. You're playing with kobe. You saw him standing on the side of his helmet on or off. Way to talk to ryan. Hey ryan how was the fee. How was the game. That was nice. Pass you had like to. We didn't see any of that. So the dolphins made the move and now look at the six to three and they are actually competing for the division title. I still i still have the bills winning the division but dolphins are there now like patriots are whatever dolphins are there and the jets we know. Are god awful to watch just terrible but an listen for justin herbert for the kid. Because you know he's doing all that he can make you really doing all. He can for the charges but they're just not finding ways to win. So you just know that going forward. We have a quarterback. We have to find a way to win with him. So what did he need. Maybe get him some more help. Maybe defense needs to be built around. I understand they don't have zero. James was definitely x factor on defense. But you just really feel for her because you know he's trying all he can. I know that we ten no. He's tired of losing. He just wanted to find a win going forward. So i want to close the show kinda talking about a story when i actually met wayne gretzky and kyw. She's funny because so few years back. I was working at my current job and we found that wayne gretzky was coming in to do premature business at our job. If i got my way. I just don't like to give the name of my job for people to know what i do outside of my podcast so if keep saying my job my job that's why people are gonna say oh. Why don't you just tell. I just don't want people to know. And i know you probably find albaladejo. Iran does not say it but anyways going back to the store so we found the wayne gretzky was coming in and i was trying so hard to greet him and he finally he finally showed up and he showed up..

Breaking Down the Quarters and Semis for the KR Contenders Playoffs

"Let's dive into our predictions for I guess we'll do predictions and then matches them predictions and matches will go in order here. So first match. We both got right. Yep Yep whoop do. We knew that team B M was not up to the task against Wgn Phoenix, and that's what happened. W just think took the three one against them I. Actually yet the three one which is actually kind of surprising because. Outside of an absolute banger that will talk about a little bit later this was the only other one that didn't go three Oh. Team. VM being able to squeak out that one map made it interesting for all of seven minutes and then. wgn Phoenix was like Nah. We're We're. Shutting you down. Yep and that one map was Lee. Shang where we saw Sung Chan gets some key hacks onto as tax on the. Road at least twice I think. You kinda tried his best to. Negate as tech but as we talk about here in the next couple of matches. Stack is shown to be really solid like you had like I think one match that we watched last week or two weeks ago where I felt when it was from. But like there was some issues dying on Bussan but beyond that, especially in these playoffs matches really leveled up. So that team tried their best to try to counter him and they did on the first map but beyond that w kind of took off and really the only other thing that I noticed outside of that. They were playing real chaotic, not super super structured. Just looked discombobulated, and then you get over to a new business and protect literally holds onto his grab for like foil. Yes and it's like there was there was a bunch of times where he could have used it. Either defensively to save some of his teammates and extend the team fight or initiate with an potentially win team fight and Nope, he just sat on it and then when he did use it, he threw it to lake. Horizon Lunar Colony I think because it just went nowhere got nothing and then they just got absolutely destroyed. Yup Listen to Wayne Gretzky protect you miss one hundred percent of the grabs you don't take so. You just gotTa. Do It man you just got? To. It's also a Hawker reference or an office reference depending on what what realm of the world you're in. The other thing too is like every minute that you're not using a graph building. You're not building graph and like if you hold a grab for like three minutes, you could've used a grab that it was like okay and then had another grab by basically the same time So. Yeah it's it's tough and like if you don't have the opportunity to use a grab at all because they're diva is constantly all over you and you don't have the counterplay or they're playing way to spread, then you probably should go on something else. That's better. Pick anyways and use the grab throwaway goldfish swimming dvr, go switch Sigmar anything else. There there's been a lot of issues that we're seeing a lot of the losing teams. They're. They're just like kind of shooting themselves in the foot with like playing what they should be. On the other side man wgn. Phoenix Lake after watching this match. I got really high on this tangle. Especially, ABC Z. Bag has been. Okay. But Gables specially was. Studer Pitt where you saw pack jump up, get damage onto. The Echo over the ACA was even. On. Haven, yeah then. He drops down back behind the cover again, and then you saw gable see right behind him come up boost up finish off the damage and then go back and then Win So comes up to resum they both dive a again and kill him as well. They open it up with two free kills and literally just roll beyond that. So I think that like one of the things especially it's been the tank line coordination for this team. In another team, we'll talk about later. Like it really sets these teams up apart like with the DP s with the one diver as well with the tanks in the one dive deep. Yes as well like. If, you have three people hive minded together you you will find success in grin contenders. And then another name on wgn that you're going to hear. US Talk. A lot absolute tyrant about is ace. When ace is on? The Sambre. Do builds EMP's insanely quick. But then on a newbies, they push team B.. M. Back to the spawn. And then they're like, you know what we got like a minute and a half left we're just going to go sit in front of the spun. And s just sits behind him and mainly heck's the supports like one clip supports drops an EMP. Like gets half of the team just absolutely bullying the back line of Team B, m on a newness and. Team B. M. had no response to ACE's play when he was running the sombre. and. It's super unfortunate that like he's only played this one pick at least what I've seen so far Inoke s on the hog. So good is unmatched in cream contenders I think I, think he might. Only, backed by MAG. But we'll see about that. Hit like he just every time like he forces other people to not play against him because he will just out a out mechanics them out strategy them and like just knows how to play better gets incredible. Pickoffs especially on Havana you saw him on the hog and Gable soon, the sigma they full hold team b. m., there as well So, like this tank line. Alternating CPAC and iino cast depending on whether or not. They're gonNA play the Winston saw shrine oranges run the Road Hog quite often because I think this was still on the playoff patch or like the wwl. Finals Patch. It'll. It's as strong three players on that team like they. Really. Really benefited from there, strong line here and gables the again like we talked about his diva being incredible signals also incredible as well during the scrappy last minute fights where there was a chance that team b. m. was going to be able to. Squeak out the first point actually cap it. he just stayed alive sustained had some good old good rocks Just good play and I think got like a couple of kills here there's also. You're going to start seeing a couple of these names come up next week when we talk not only about Plants and stuff like that but also on recommended. Pickups for teams in the off season because. Couple of teams might be going full Korean here and. There's a lot of new blood that's rear and to get some Odell time in. So I'm excited to see that I actually can't wait to talk about that team that I think is going full Korean 'cause. It's GONNA be interesting to try to put together. A bunch of players out of Korean contenders to slot into that team or and see how close we can get to actually hitting the. the mark on how many people get pulled from creon contenders.

"I saw. He was doing the over the board so the reporter asked a question. They put the mic in front of him. At no time does he look at the reporter nor look at the camera. He's watching the league skate. Around in warm-up disinterest made it kind of struck a chord with me I'm going out damn guys if you can just be interested. Maybe the casual fan becomes more interested. Maybe the hardcore fan becomes even more interested. Maybe you start to build your brand a little bit well. What does that do building? Your brand means if there's more interest there's more revenue like let's get right down to the bottom line. More revenue means more hockey related revenue. Which means maybe you're hated escrow. We'll go down. Yeah but you have to be open to doing it and too many guys are closed off to it and it. I think it's a myths. Now Look I like to talk. And that's the way you know that's the way I'm built. I never found it to be too much of a Chore Gas Question. Answer the question and move along. You agree agree to do these over. The board interviews. So why do them right or don't do them now get somebody else to do it? Tell the PR guy. I don't feel like doing it. But the due to do such a uninterested jaw with it. I think I think it just makes guys look bad is funny you bring up the Toronto Maple leaves and that experience with with gas berry and not to pile on the leafs here and obviously there's zoned out there. They're focused. They're thinking about what they need to do in the game by. Okay let me let me stop you for a sec in warm up you're not thinking about you're not thinking about the game now you're just trying to get loose. They'll let you looking row thirteen to see who happens to be sitting there No I think you're maybe I don't know you look at the guys that are off the boomer. You know the have a laugh. They're getting one the games in a half an hour and look over at the other team and you go. Yeah okay. This guy's there that guy's not playing okay. You notice that and then you warm up. It's not like you're just grinding through place. They've done the same warm up since one thousand nine hundred five right. Come out and circle around your you. Go into the coroner's yes. Kato you take your pass from the other guy you do with hang onto two on one and Bob your uncle your out of there. Well the reason I bring up his soul so last night and I don't know if you saw you know we're recording on on Thursday here so it was Wednesday night. Kaba Costas is interviewing William Mainlander exact scenario and they've got some some video some B. Roll of of Neil under trying to get into the leaves dressing room so he's arriving at the arena. Y'All in the street clothes. He's trying to get the doors locked and he can't get in which is a music. I mean everybody wants to see that it's it's it's funny and he asked me. Landeros as last question I think nealon or maybe out of two word response. That was it just. You didn't blow him off. He wasn't rude. He just was not having any part of explaining what happened and why he'd been locked out a leaves room. You know what a longtime ago I remember Kevin Shattenkirk got traded to know. It wasn't Kevin Shattenkirk Somebody was traded to the capital's And he turned around he did the interview right outside the capital's door and the door was locked and so he made he made light of it. You know we tried it. And then he added again and he kind of like you. Don't have to be an Oscar actor no but you can have a little bit of Zip. I mean. I'm sure once the door got unlocked. Kneeland or founded funny. No question right. I just think it's a mask drags. I just think it's a mess all right. Well we're not GONNA mess on the ask Ray and dregs questions today and Dario. Oddly enough question one is about the Toronto Maple leafs and it comes from LE- Le- wants your opinion rate on the Toronto Maple leaves should adjust their approach putting the TAVERAS line against the other teams top line or should they switched to the minor line with Matthew going against the best as Mars. Better defensively than to verison. You know he's saying it was an apparent mess versus the mcdavid line earlier in the week to Aris seemingly got torched by mcdavid minor stripped him of the POC. Would you make that adjustment why I do think a couple of things first of all you can match lines in? That's important but it's the defense that really carry the water here in the match against another another top line. So the leafs in that game. We're playing Martin. Marin and Justin Hall against mcdavid they got caved in right now. That's bad match. That diverse line is well. They got a shot. Twenty two four now. Mcdavid was unbelievable and tomorrow's line was not very good. I don't know that I would go with one over the other like as this is the way. I'm always going to do it. I think there's some cases where Matthews as his game has continued to grow that that would be the one that I would use and then other times it would be bars. I think they have. You have to look at it as to what you can't have a plan cemented. That never changes I would. I would look at both guys and who you trust enough against another top line might not be the same guy all the time off the top of the podcast we. We talked a lot about the world junior championship. And I guess we'll wrap up that event with this and it comes from Chris Christie's wandering what the NHL can do to make the world junior hockey championship more popular in the United States. That's where Chris Lives He says very few people in America have the NHL Channel as it costs. More money So it would be better if games were available on a free channel. Like NBC. Something along those lines to get a greater audience to see and follow the tournament like it is in Canada any ideas on that and I mean I guess we kind of stay in our own little pond here and worry but we worry about in Canada. Yeah I you know I know they have they do have it on the NHL Network Just the US Games for the most part. I think as far as it being on a free channel cable channel now right like you it would be hard to imagine that a over the air channel is going to pick it up. I mean they I guess technically they could But somebody's got to foot the bill on that could it be part of a grass roots or more grass roots pushed to these players get into the public consciousness a little earlier perhaps could USA hockey being more involved in it absolutely however just unless the unless the NHL and yeah you know what they can. It comes down to money if somebody wants to pay for the right. Then then they can put on their channel or they can stream it right but somebody has to pay for the rights. You don't get to have the product it's just not the way. The business works all right final question from Carson Ray. What made you decide to go into broadcasting as opposed to working in a team front office after you retired. Great Question Okay. I always thought I was GONNA coach. And then I thought I was going to get into management just before last year in Atlanta. My my wife and I separated. I was getting divorced so when I retired My ex wife was GONNA move to Vancouver. Which is where we are now and I could not I promise the boys Matt and Landon that I wouldn't I wouldn't leave. I wouldn't travel. They were ten and thirteen and so coaching instantly fell out like I. I couldn't do it. And so then you know. So we got settled here in Vancouver and got remarried and Then cammie and I had Riley and pretty soon time just kind of moved away from that. I done some broadcasting while I was playing and it seemed as it was something that people thought could be okay at or good at or whatever and I liked it and then I got offered Joe or offered to audition for the oilers color job. I got that job and I retired in. May of two thousand and two in an October. I started on TV. I had no idea what I was doing. And then all of a sudden I was the color commentator the oilers and it was it was an beyond seamless transition going from one to the other but I had no idea what I was doing but I did it mostly for family for to be around the boys as much as possible so name. Every team was expressed interest in hiring. You and a hockey capacity. Go ahead there. You are finished. He asked by the way. Why chose my career path? I didn't have the same option I could've worked in a potash mine in yesterday's scheduling could've stayed on the farm. I could talk. I wasn't a very good hockey player. But something about this industry stuck with me. I was actually driving. New York. Densest Gach when when my mom and I heard a radio AD break From Western Academy in Saskatoon and it was as big booming voice a guy by the name Don Scott and it was hi. My name is Don Scott. Do you want a radio career? Something along those what happened so anyway. That's what I did I said. Hey you know what do that or become a phys ed teacher. And I didn't think I'd be good at that either so I think you made the right choice man. I'm going to tell one story about I'm broadcasting on. Espn as I'm still playing rights. When my team's got eliminated from the playoffs they called. Said you WANNA come and do some. Tv work. I said sure so now. This has gone on for a couple of years by this point. We're playing in the playoffs. It's my last year against Detroit. And there's a scrum the net everybody's pushing and shoving inury Fisher is got me by the shirt collar. Jerry Fisher. If you don't remember him. He had a hard episode and actually have been tire early Fortunately with saved by a guy that I've gotten to know Dr Tony Colucci They saved him on the bench. And you're he's gone on. He's scouts with.

"Uh-huh all right time for everyone's favorite part of the rain drake's hoc you. Podcast is throat punch. And Ray. I've I've got something special for you bulldogs all right now. The problem is I don't know how to shut it off. Hold on the part working on it right all. Come on. Shut it off series. Obviously that's the penalty box from the world junior hockey championship in the Czech Republic. And I've got a feeling that after hearing at one time. That was enough for us at fair. I can't stand that song. Now this is this is what people I don't think understand so we're doing two games a day. Most people were watching the Canadian Game. And maybe part of the other game though in the first game. Say there's ten penalties ten times. I hear that Song the Canadian game. There's seven penalties that seventeen times a day. Somebody thought that song was a great thing to play as a player. Any pressure filled time goes to the penalty box. It sounds like it reminded me of the old Benny Hill thing. Benny Hill theme get. I hated it. I couldn't even I. It would come on and you'd be like I can't even ignore it how much I dislike. Know what it was called. I think it was called Charlie Charlie something. I'd like to meet Charlie. Tell him to beat it. So Charlie gets a throat punch for sure what is going to take away from the throat punches as you were playing the song people can't see you were kind of dancing and shoulder shuffle gone. I'm not I can see. I can see why Holly thought you were a great idea back in the day. Oh what a smooth dancer. Hey you know how we met by the way It was actually I if you're old enough to appreciate this but in small town I'm GonNa say Canada but it was a Western candidates. Scotch when they used to bring in. When the ice was out in the summer they would bring in like a Roller Skating Company. Right and once a week. There'd be like a roller skating party in the Land Bird Arena Landaburu schedule. And that's where hall and I met for the first time I was like fourteen. Fifteen at the time admire skin-tight GW. Jeez on sweet ass. Like I mean really really nice and on top of that. I was wearing a Pittsburgh pirates. Remember the old Pittsburgh Pirates Hats. That were lawsuits. I mean like coke wouldn't want she's always human anyway. It wasn't my dancing. It was a masculinity on roller skates. Not Blades Skates these. Things had four wheels man. Did you have your own? No which is. It's a personal pet peeve of mine. That's the reason I don't go bowling and roller skating. Gross me out because I'm wearing somebody else's toe jam and I'm not digging it. Yeah I can bring your own socks to bowling. Oh yeah I wear socks but I guess they sprayed them. I don't know what they're sure. They did back in the eighties. Spreadable rights anyway. This is what happens when you bring pauly or tiny. I've always got a story right. And then they're usually ridiculous. That's good but my throat punch goes to the goal song because I couldn't stand it bugged me. I would give a secondary one to Corey. Perry for his play in the game. Yeah because it's funny. You can defend if you want but the stuff piles around the same guys all the time. It's coming from the side. There's only one place you're gonNA hit the player. And that's Ryan Ellis. Yeah there's only one place I didn't like that place. Oh did you think I mean five was the maximum without the in person hearing so I thought it would have been Alderman. Yes absolutely I just. I don't see how there was any other result that was going to happen from trying to make a hit right in that position. Well Yeah I'm not struggling with this but it's it's not as defined as I would like it to be normally the throat punch as you've described is it's individualized. It's either again. Your candidates Corey Perry for the five game suspension. Being perhaps a bit light for dirty play or the penalty box song. I get that I'm going with anyone who continues to oppose more three on three overtime and I get it be as I've talked to general managers about this coaches. There's at least a hint of concern that you're going to stress overplay your top dogs your top players because those are the players that are going to be out there in ending standard window of three on three but I've also talked to players and I've talked to goaltenders and there wouldn't be many who prefer the shootout over an extended three on three so my throat punch goes to anyone who says now we're good with what we have five minutes with three three overtime and leave the shoot up and in fairness that might go all the way up to the Commissioner's Office because Gary Bettman as always been a strong proponent and advocate of the shooter for me it's an individual's skills competition. I want and need more three on three. I don't I don't understand the on board with the debate over it. You know it's more ice time for your stars while if it is than us some other guys yeah right now because the the shootout. I liked it when it first came in I was on board with it. I'm like this well. Then all of a sudden there's too many games going to shootout and I'm like It's not that overtime. Toronto and Winnipeg last night was spectacular. Well they're not always spectacular right all the time they you know you don't get the best version you know you guys kind of. They're going to control the park. They're GONNA come back to center. Whatever it might be. I would much prefer that to me. That's closer to real hockey. Then you have to You know to the shadow and the reason that they will always look for an ending is because the ties were just they were unpalatable to the North American audience. Like in soccer. You have tie on the European tie it just finishes tie basketball they play. They don't go to a free throw shooting contest or three or three point shooting contest. They play overtime till it ends. I would prefer that too. I'm with you on this all right. We've got to ask Ray Andrey coming up. Do you WANNA play. You want me to play Charlie one more time Ray. Is we leave throat punch or should I just let that Rusk? I've I've almost had enough of Charlie You know what's really been interesting to drake's is how many people send it to me on twitter at me to the group that will be tweeting it at in the very near future perhaps as part of the limited promotional work that you do in supporting the rain breaks occupied cast on. These are all right. Let's go between the benches and we're gonNA start with a positive and then we'll shift over to somewhat of a negative story. Line your thoughts on the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Arizona coyotes if you look at the Columbus Blue Jackets radio months ago we're talking about Columbus. What is going on with the Blue Jackets? I mean at that point a month ago their way out of the playoffs and you know all of a sudden now. They're right the thick of things yet again yet. Well it's funny. I would say that you know we. Can you know we? It's pretty easy to to point out. What what amuses us at times from from John Tortorella when he snaps at the podium when he you know any is so fiery. The Guy can coach because their team was decimated in the offseason. They lost rate. Now are Tammy perine had sixty points New York. So they lose him they lose Brodsky. They've got to totally unproven. Goalies and Yoenis corpuscle. Who got hurt and Elvis? Moore's Lincoln's there forward group is just gutted with injury and yet now they've got fifty points on the season there. Ten One and four in their last fifteen games. They're they're at the second wildcard spot two points behind Philly two points behind Carolina I find it astounding and of course nobody really notices or none of us really pay much attention. But you're like damn they're doing unbelievable and I think it has to be knowledged Arizona's We talk it on earlier and talk to him. About what A. What a great job. He's done in the coyotes of done. This division is jammed up. You've got between first and fifth. You've got four point separating teams but Arizona's at the top of the heap. They got twenty five. Wins the both goalies on a lineup? Anti rant is hurt again and Darcy Camper got hurt now. It's down to goalie three Eden Hill and they went again talks. Done an amazing job out there but getting Taylor Hall adds another level to their team. Kessel start to warm up to the deal and they're not going to be an easy cure and some credit to John. The general manager. Who knows I mean? That's that's a coup that's a big deal and acquiring Taylor all may not be done between now and and the trade deadline. If you pay much attention to this I think you do you know it's always fun. When you see basketball players tee off show personality we see it in the NBA. Of course we see it and in the NFL to some degree on occasion. You see it from baseball players. Rarely do we see just pure personality from NHL Stars? There are a handful. There are a handful. I everytime Brad Marchand opens his mouth. I want to hear what he has to say. And and there are other players who are like that because they're not afraid of the media and they've figured out a while ago that you know what it's part of brand building is part of brand building now you can go to the extreme with. Pk Superman but then you can take it all the way back to Connor mcdavid. Who clearly doesn't doesn't love the camera. He knows that you know being captain of team matters and he has to speak with the media. I don't that he's. He's intimidated at all by media. I just don't get the sense of the enjoys doing it. Is that missed opportunity by? Nhl Players in failing to build their brand because they're not embracing the opportunity to give us more. Yeah it's it's a mess. It's a mess by the players in. It's a missed by the league. Now the league brings in the top players at the start of the year they have that media junket and they film a bunch of commercials and things that get shown throughout the year. Like I saw him You know the magician. That's doing all these tracks with the players. That's all done at the media tour. I really liked that stuff. Because you see the guys are laughing trying to figure it out now. Not Every interview has to be a grand slam but what happens too. Often I think is the players so either are uninterested or distrust what the interviews about. They don't give anything and it's not that you have to give up deep dark secret. Just pretend to be entered to to be interested watched Kesari cap and in the other day. Do over the boards interview before the game and I and I guess I am picking on him but I don't really mean to. It's just the latest one.

"Tony almost passed on us. I hope people remember but yeah that minor green in your resume. Actually my house through a super bowl party that we had and went light down and thankfully his wife a spur enough to realize that it was worse than just a headache and we went to the hospital and had hours of surgery and consequently you know he's fine but listen he was just all hurting soil You know ray never. He never cheated. The game at all. Practice played heart. They love the game and just I was so blessed to have him as a roommate. he was my last roommate after he couldn't go anymore for a while. I decided that was it. I was going to get my own. We're stuck at France today. Chat with them quite a bit and I always remember how good that line was in the Toronto series of Corey Mellon Mike Donald. Tony Granato they got the game winning goal or they put us up for two three in that game seven But nobody plays more hundred more desire and and pound for pound the toughest guy that ever played with. Just the pleasure play with excellent Gretz. We WanNA thank you for joining us and taking a good junkier day away to to be part of the ranger eggs hockey podcasts. Thanks for doing this great day. Thanks guys thanks wing. Man Ray number of stories there that I hadn't heard before coming from the great one wing. Gretzky we we. We spent the better part of probably twenty four twenty five. Maybe twenty six minutes talking to this guy. We could've talked for hours because when you when you hear wing tell the stories you can you can hear you can almost feel the passion that comes out of the history of his game. I'm I'm most amazed with with the detail that he watches a play with these breaking down mcdavid goal and and of course the way that he played but he talks through establishing a new frontier in the in the southern United States. But he's given credit to everybody else you know. It's always been a trademark of him. His humble he is. I'm just astounded for as much as Wayne does for our league. There would be no end to the asks for him. What an ambassador for the sport that he is and can be It's it's really remarkable. I I loved listen to them. Tell the stories that he did. Did you appreciate the Audio Cameo from tiny? The ran drugs hockey on ASCA. Pretty clear that tiny runs at home. So as we're recording the the interview I've got a dog walking service. "I was given choices of the New York Philadelphia. Detroit OR LA IN. My heart was set ongoing Detroit. I grew up according to how fan I felt like you know he was. The greatest player ever played a game tonight. Become friends and not only was my idol. My friend and it was my dad's stepped in and said listen There's only one Gordie how Why do you be unique and do something different and go to California so ended up in California and I always tell people? There's two things one? I was with the right group of guys who understood that we're more than just hockey players guys like Lucrative multi Marty mcsorley Kelly Rudy. Jim Fox these guys were spend countless hours in youth clinics and talking hockey and going to school and so the high school hockey program went from I believe in a d there was four high school teams over one hundred thirty high school teams by nineteen ninety five so everybody had a hand in it. And then my timing couldn't have been better sense that Mark Messier went to New York Rangers and work was an icon himself and very visible very crews maddock. Steve is Herman leaving the Detroit. Red Wings and what he did on the ice and off the ice and of course the two big ones. Were Mario saving the franchise in Pittsburgh and doing what he did? For hockey there and then of course bread hall single handedly saving the Saint Louis. Blues there'd be no Saint Louis. Blues today have cliff. Fletcher Not Traded Bread Hall to the Saint Louis Blues. So my timing couldn't have been better. All those pieces fit together and then during that period of time there was a gentleman. Come to every game that fell in love with hockey in. His son was a hockey player and he happened to be running Disney Michael Eisner and one day he sort of said at dinner. I WANNA do. I'm doing the hockey movie calling mighty ducks and it was more successful than anybody could have imagined and then he said you know what? I'M GONNA have a hockey team called the mighty ducks and I remember thinking well. That's probably warned the craziest things I've ever heard who needs an NHL team. The mighty ducks are then. I'm sitting here thinking well. This guy's probably one of the greatest marketing gurus in the history of of of life. Not just arts and so when that happened. Georgian Gordon Gun moved the team to San Jose and then everything just sorta snowball and like I say to people all the time. Listen I was proud of what I helped create and help to California and in the United States but everybody had a small piece in the small hand and making hockey more popular. We always listen. It's a great game. We have a bad image where it's an art to be able to be a good. Nhl Player you gotta you gotTa Pass. It's a man's game. You gotta take a hit you gotta give it a hit and I think what we showed people was. There was an artistry to the sport of Hockey consequently a lot of these great athletes in the United States who grew up especially climate cities. And I WANNA play baseball or football. Tennis gravitated to a sport that they truly loved and they they enjoyed and the sport itself is the greatest game in the world and once kids get introduced to it. It's pretty easy to sell them on it because it's such a fun game and so I was one word of mouth pieces of sort of puzzle and obviously I'm very proud of it. You mentioned somewhere in there Wayne About Your Dad. Counseling it to be you know to go to La two to be your you know to make your own. Mark this past holiday season I thought it was a spectacular beautiful commercial with the autograph in Dim. Horton's I I just loved it. I thought it was amazing. How did that all come about well? First of all thanks in the listen. I I was a stick boy. My Dad was plane. Intermediate B hockey or at team in a little town called air. Which is just outside of Paris and Terry and the age of four years old. I was a stick boy and at the end of that year we got team Jackson. I'm so proud of my jacket The moral the story is from that point on. My Dad collected everything that I ever sort of accumulated my first Jerseys Dick's pox trophies Team jackets and he would just keep it. There is no no reason to wasn't have about money or didn't think or know why would ever make the NHL it was just. He was that kind of a person. And at the age of sixers load Tim Hortons opened in Branford area. And I remember seeing assigned to Morton is GONNA be there to sign autographs and I remember talking my mother to take me and she took me over there. I got Tim Hortons autograph I remember how say they was like all six year olds? When I got out there my mom did all the talking. They couldn't even Sorta Open my house. And you know to this day mother's chase autographs and then sort of afterwards apologize and don't worry about. My Mom. Did the same thing for me I am. I know the feeling it's okay So a couple of years ago We have a little bit of a mishap in her basement. Got a little bit of flooding and some of my friends and family were down there. Picking things up to make sure nothing got damaged in one of the things they picked up. Was this old to help them. Then my dad had down there with sort of some ribbons and pictures and stuff and low behold in in their particular album. Was the autograph from Tim. Horton so tim. Hortons called me and we talked and chatted. They wanted to get back to the grassroots of where the company started being Canadian and trying to really show people and it's a great Canadian company Over lunch I just talked about getting his autograph from from there the Tim. Hortons people Wisely put this full service commercial together and something that we're very proud of all beautiful incredible story a great commercial. You're right Wayne Gretzky. Our guests on the ran. Drake's hockey podcast. We're going to incorporate a little social media here for you. Grads a twitter question comes from Mike. Fowler and Mike is asking if you could apply one rule change that the NHL has today in today's current era. What would it be? And he's leading the question by saying would it be three on three in overtime or would it be something else Well let me tell you this. Every time we watch a hockey game and my wife and I were at the last couple of Games Boston and Toronto. And then last night we got a chance to watch. Incredible citing overtime of the Winnipeg jets and and try to make police and I think anybody and everybody was a fan who watched that were just on the edge of their seats except for the for two people. The coach Winnipeg coach Toronto But we often say Gosh. How Fun would that have been able to have three hundred three when when we played you know myself and curry and Paul coffey on the MRI Anderson. Just it would have been so much fun but I you know I. I love what we've done with our game. The game today is such a better game And that that's no not against anybody who played in the fifties or the eighties. The players today are bigger faster as you know ray. The equipment is so much better. The skates are better. Imagine how Great Bobby. Orr would've been today if he could've skated it and the skates that they used today. He basically used the tennis shoe with a blade on it. And you know to me. That's phenomenal. That's why the athletes in seventy and eighty great equipment wasn't as good but today they're bigger and they're faster they're stronger. I I like the game today. The the one thing that the one I would change and it's not a big rule. I think that it's an art to carry the POC from your own end into the offensive zone so if I had one thing that I would change wherever the whistle gets blown down delay penalty. That's where you should start from but I know we're trying to create more offense and worksite. -Ment it's a positive but I also think it's an art to be able to carry the puck from your own end into the visiting team's defensive zone so you tell so eight so you might. You must love that. A hundred and fifty foot slap pass and tip it into the zone. Exciting Paula Ninety other day was sitting there and he was always the greatest passers from his own end to center. That I've ever SEEN BABIES. Good as bobby on us and I was saying to include Jim if you could pass to the far Blue Line. How much fun would listen. That's like we'll let you go here shortly but ray you've got a tell the story. I've heard this story a couple of times the first time you had a conversation if we want to call it a conversation with Wayne Gretzky on the ice and want you to share that experience in that memory while. I'm almost certain Wayne won't remember it. I told him the second time I talked to. Wayne was in a golf cart and I told them this story and so I was my first or second year and we were in. Edmonton back then. The veterans used to be able to cheat at the face off in the linesman would never really say anything they'd have. Us young guy standing there like a frozen rule and so I'm standing there in Wayne. It's turned almost sideways backwards. And so because I was a I said why. Don't you just throw the puck in the corner for him and he doesn't have to ruin the tape on his blade and I'd never spoken to him before total. Aw and he said why. Don't you zip it and put your stick on? The ice was our first conversation and went put one. Hey Jerry something. That's that's nothing compared to my first game in the Philadelphia Spectrum. I was eighteen years old and about one hundred and fifty pounds. And I'm facing off against Bobby Clark and I look over there and I just seen all these guys on. Tv and his Don Celeski and Bob Kelly and pont and I remember thinking wow I better be on my fastest behavior today. I better get my skates move and before the puck was even drop. Bobby Kerr came in spitting in hacking like you always did brothers stick down and cut me for five stitches in the face before it drops the income stick. Yeah I go one more for you in your time in La. Your your roommate was my brother-in-law. Tony Granato now Tony. Seventy two speeds of fast. Tell me something that he was like as a roommate. I can't believe he was the most organized guy or but I bet it was an unbelievable roommate. It was the best You're lucky my career really had couple of roommates. Only Kevin lobbying one and of course. Tony.

"All right joining an episode fourteen of the raindrops hockey podcast. None other than Wayne Gretzky. We've been teeing this up for the last couple of days Gretz. Thanks doing this. Appreciate you taking the time. Yeah no problem pleasure. Fear we've got FERRARO standing by. Of course we'll let him jump in momentarily but let's let's go back to Monday's game and I mean I've talked a lot about this. Thought you were paid close attention to the spectacle that was the connor mcdavid goal in Toronto. You were there. Is it true you literally got out of your seat? Mcdavid scored that highlight goal. Yeah pretty much You know I've I've been lucky enough. I've got to play a lot over the last few years obviously being connected so. I've seen it time and time again. It never gets old and there's something. I don't care what anybody says. There's something really special about doing something like so unique in places like Toronto or Montreal or Madison Square Garden. There's just something very very unique about it and obviously the awareness when something like that does happen is pretty incredible and if you look at The replay and I. I've watched closely many times when he got the puck between the red line. In the Blue Line as you can see them looking into the middle of the ice. I think he knew before. I even got to the Blue Line. Defensive into the minimum was gonNA utilize his speed and go outside. So if you look at it closely. It wasn't a spur of the moment decision. I think he had the play in his in his mind. Before you even got over the Blue Line and that's pretty special man. It was. It was unique because listen we have most goalies in the NHL catch With their left hand That goaltender happen to be Right catching with his right hand and he came in on that side. Consequently that side opens up a little bit more for goaltender instinctively. So right hand side comes in on his win against a left handed glove goaltender. That side is normally decided to go. So it's very very rare that I left hand in shock gets that opportunity to SORTA fake and go back against the green and obviously capitalized on Fruit secular moment. You're talking about you know he's he's doing all of this in about a second right like it's not like he's got all kinds of time to think about it and similarly Do things that other people just couldn't do. They didn't see it. They didn't understand it. And you know you'd make your your turn up at the Blue Line and you'd pass to nobody except your came. Yari Curry and we always were amazed by that. What what the players like yourself. And now we're seeing with connor. What do you process like? How do you see it because the rest of us? The ice left really crowded. Let me tell you got really crowded at the end of my career. I really I asked Connor that a day. I I was curious because listen this hockey sense in his hand and all. That are pretty remarkable. There's duties crosby and Matthews and Marna tapes. I mean these guys are pretty special but one of the things I wanted to do was like he has another gear and probably listen. I I saw Paul Coffee. And he was remarkable his speed and his acceleration but probably the combustible to connor that of Bobby Orange his day that he could sorta take that one stride and all of a sudden two strays later. He was in full gear and I was asking corner that question like did you have this when you were five to seven did you or did you find it when you're fourteen like how to. How do you have that extra step that listen play? Frankly nobody else has in the game today Similar to maybe the speed and power of that of the veteran shot. There's only one vegetable. Well there's only one corner what he does and I think that as I said he didn't just at the spur of the moment. Decide all right. I'm to take this guy inside and utilized my speed and go around him. He his mind was to plays or two steps ahead of everyone else before he even made that play so I think that players who grew up thinking that way and utilize that from a young age they just sort of groom themselves throughout their life and consequently that. That was a lot that I did so when I was five I play with ten year olds and when I was fourteen I was planning. It's nineteen and twenty year olds and of course seventeen against men so I could never utilize strength or power. I had to to use my hockey knowledge my hockey sense and so from a young age. I never really changed my style. The only thing changed that fourteen June be against nineteen years nineteen year old. Junior big coats said listen. Watch Bobby Clark play. Plays out of the quarter and little bit behind the net. That's what you should try to emulate and so studied Bobby Clarke And consequently problem is one of the earlier guys and one of the first guys legalize the net as a weapon utilized going behind the net as tactic and I started at a fourteen so by the time I was playing pro. I'd already done it for four twenty five years and it was a new for me. I've never heard that analogy to to Bobby Clarkin and how you would have picked that up. That's really cool because if you remember the days of the Boston Bruins and fill US busy. The Big Centerman John Belleville big sentiment and the big Centerman sort of stand in the middle of the box and those states that defenseman was allowed to sort of knock guys over crosscheck guys That was part of our game. Well I I couldn't have done that. I was small and Bobby Clark was in the big guy and he was the first guy with Rick Lesion Reggie Leach and he he was more from the net to the corner making his passes to Reggie Leach mcleese and every now and then he would go behind the net. But that's when I really started to follow Bobby Clark. I didn't have the speed. The job F- parole is probably the best in the game at the time and My my coach said You watch Bobby Clark. Play every night you can. And that's what I did. I studied onto tea and I was able to You know sort of masking my craft of the many things you've left in your legacy of of the game one was when you got traded to Los Angeles and the consequent spread of hockey through the United States. I mean that Spurs and Austin Matthew Spurs The Dallas Stars and the growth hockey through California. Have you ever sit back and reflect and go about your impact that you left behind by going to Los Angeles? Well listen first of all it so it seems like yesterday. I got traded I actually Just don't know where the time flies. I I drove by Kotel in front neck Missouri and I was telling my kids I spent my twenty first birthday. They in that hotel with your grandmother. Great Grandmother After Game Saint Louis so time flies so fast But you know When I got traded air everybody sort of thought and put together okay. It's a family decision. We're going to to Los Angeles in and that's probably true but the.

"Was probably becoming predictable and then when the players start to smell it then you really have to make a move. You like they were traveling. When the heroics of this effort came into play in Toronto Connor mcdavid goal versus the Toronto. Maple leaves on Monday. I know you've seen it obviously multiple times. I mean when you see once you've got to watch it a dozen times just to to make sense of what connor mcdavid did Morgan Riley and the impact. He finishes in in scoring an unbelievable unbelievable goal. You know we use goal of the year as as Cliche but I mean this one has to be an early. Favourite candidate is hitting the hot for two thousand twenty. I assume something might be able to challenge it but the sheer brilliance of what he did at the speed he did against the defenseman. That is a hell of a player and Morgan Riley. Now you put it all together and I mean it was. It was a thing of beauty it really was and I did watch it. I was on the plane I saw you know on on twitter and then I watched it again and then I watched it at home and like one of the things I was most terrified of in the NHL was getting a pass. And then having a one on one against the defenseman. Because I knew I could never beat him. No matter who was back there was no chance that I was going to be able to get around this guy. And then you got the whole rink looking at you like this kind of embarrassing. Because I can't get by the guy that guys were good and I can't get by him. That's not my game and he took it and just undressed riley like it was spectacular. I mean the edge work this. Yeah the deception. It was all there is. It was a thing of beauty. His level of confidence mirrors his athleticism and creativity. I think that's why I expect the unexpected now and as as glorious as that goal was and it probably will be the the goal of the year. I'm waiting for the next one because I know there's going to be a next one from Connor mcdavid. I. I can't debate it. I just I'm trying to figure out how could look if a better his ability to go super fast in one direction and then changed. Directions without losing speed is astounding. I would say is I think about the changes in the game with the players. That ability across the board is has grown more and more to the player's ability to change direction on their edges without losing speed. We couldn't do that. We could change directions but it took a lot lot more time than this. I mean that that stuff is broken. Thinking of the guys I think a Jack Eichel how he changes directions right like these. You can go across that nate McKinnon like then of course Mick Davids the. It's the prime. He's he's number one at at all. Well Wayne Gretzky perfect seat in Toronto. Watching that game no question. He was out of his seat in celebration in the Mcdavid goal he`ll. He'll join us on the rain rigs hockey podcast. Coming up shortly. speaking of greatness. And you know it's it's a category that we have to put mcdavid in now. Obviously Wayne Gretzky for many top of the list. Alexander Ovechkin Ray. Six hundred eighty four goals scored two against the Ottawa. Senators in our wrote of the sense Earlier in the week. I mean it's conceivable now tied for eleventh. All Time in goals was six hundred. Eighty four with James Salani. It is conceivable is it. Not that he could. He could catch Gretzky's eight hundred ninety four. Now there's a two hundred ten goal gap as we're recording the podcast here. Who which isn't chump change by any means. But are you a believer that it could be done? He's thirty four or do you just get. It's it's an impossibility at this stage. I don't think it's an impossibility in the reason I don't is because obese game in my opinion will age pretty well because he'll still be able to get to the front of the net not as often but he's still going to wait two hundred and thirty pounds. He's still going to be a horse. He's going to get in there. You can stand there like a statue in the left circle and score ten to twelve goals. A year can score thirty year. Thirty five goals a year. We have another fifty goal year. Pass this one in. Because he's GonNa need a year or two. That are big ears. Yeah so what does he have now? Does he have twenty nine. Twenty eight something like that. Yeah we don't want to say twenty six. That sounds right. I think he was twenty four going into that Ottawa game. So is going to be near fifty again you know. Can he do it again? One more time that that's going to be critical to whether he can score of these two hundred ten goals you know. He's going to have to have one big year. He's going to have to average near thirty five goals a year. It's possible I hope he gets close and I think Wayne would hope gets close to because the excitement for the game would be astounding like the records that could be challenged. Just think the most all time goals that that would be amazing. Now Wayne is both most humble person. You can come across but I would never cheer for anybody to break my record away. Plus Stamkos has as four hundred nine plus. Now he's all right right and I saw. Her name was was was an achievement. No question yeah. I saw this thing like He was You know it was quite a milestone for him you know. He was really excited about passing it. I was hoping it was going to go into a six year slump. Be Honest with you. I'm sure you were by the way one thing about lovie because I think he's GonNa get close. I'd like you'll be in the ballpark anyway. Put it that way whether he gets there or not. I guess is is. It's you know we'll we'll we'll find out but it's astounding. He did this. You know the the number of goals he's got to tie Salani. That's three hundred less games. I know and also think about three hundred less games. Amazing what he's done well and that's six hundred and eighty four goals in eleven hundred twenty nine games and again just as a as a point of Reference Wayne Gretzky scored eight hundred ninety four goals in fourteen hundred and eighty seven. Nhl Game Salt provided over. You can stay healthy. Obviously you know we're saying he's got a chance Let's kick over the Montreal Canadians. Wrap up top five rape. They lost to the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. Seven-game winless earlier. This season are seven-game winless. Now as we're recording earlier this season they went through an eight game winless stretch. They've now lost to the Detroit Red Wings three times this year. They could miss the playoffs for the fourth time in five years can can you make sense of this because the market in Montreal is getting warm right now and starting to point fingers and call out names? Well I can make some sense of it on a couple of things that that really are tied together. Montreal doesn't have offense that's GONNA come from explosive players guys that can change the game. Standalone player you know. Their offense has to be across the board right. It has to be depth. It has to be one through four lines. They have to play really near the top of their capabilities to be a successful team while Joel. Armenia has had a fantastic area thirteen goals last year. Got Eleven now. And then he's out along with Brendan Gallagher you know. They're they're top score along with Paul Byron along with Jonathan Drouin. Who had been playing terrific hockey? So you ask any team or look at any team. They take four of their top nine. Four words out of the lineup. They got problems. If you don't have guys that can carry your team while then you got even bigger problems. That's kind of where Montreal is offensively more Berge and the GM said look. We want to stay in the race until the end of the month and we get healthy. I don't even know if they're in the race. Still no you know and so we can look at the immediate and then if you go back and take a look at their draft choices in the first round only from two thousand nine to two thousand fourteen with the trade of Michael McCarron Nashville. Six straight first round picks and they don't have anything for it not so good and those those guys are between twenty eight or twenty nine and twenty two at this point like. That's that's safe. Four of those six picks work you know and there's Nikita sure back and Louis Leblanc back in the day and Michael mccaren you know or those are three of them and they just Jared tenacity is another. They just haven't worked for them and they're paying the price for that So would you be among the chorus of preaching patients or do you think? Berge has to step up even as difficult as it is to make meaningful trades in season. It can be done. Otherwise have done it. He's done it. Would you be patient and allow the Montreal Canadians to meander forward? Missed the playoffs again. And do their work in the off season. Or would you be one would be preaching for Change at the state why? I don't think they can make anything happen right now. That will change the season. The only way I'd make a significant move now as if it if it has benefit going forward the problem Montreal has talked about the first round. Picks they've got some really good young talent and then they carry price Shea Weber in the middle part of that is really where the issue start to sit so. I don't know if you've ever tried to do two things at the same time. It never works no right. You're looking for your keys in your conversation. Now you forget what you're talking about is you're looking for your keys or you go to pick up your keys. And you forget the conversation when you straddle the fence you can catch yourself right in the middle do exactly. And that's where they are. They've got these. You know these stud older players in price who by the way has been not even average this year. His statistics are not even average and Shea Weber had a fantastic year. You've got them at one end of the roster then you've got a bunch of young guys that just doesn't work. They're trying to get younger and better. And then they've got these there twenty million dollars tied up in two players. I don't know how you make a meaningful trade now to fix that but getting into the draft. They've got to use some of their cap space. They could take players on that. Other teams are looking to create cap space with. Yeah you might be able to get high price player from somewhere else because they can afford it rather teams can't do that good stuff rape. We've got Wayne Gretzky. The great one coming up on the Rangers Hockey podcast. And of course a little bit later a weekly staple throat punch ask gray and grades.

"He's now playing professionally in Europe but at the tournament in Toronto at Twenty fifteen and Slovaks made it to the semi finals. They were chanting his name in the building. Eighteen thousand people chanting his name. Where is he ever going to get a greater moment than that? Was there pressure to it. Yup You bet there was and that's just the way it is the tournament itself Yes. Tsn has helped make it what it is. They've broadcast for thirty years but if this tournament was going on in the middle of the woods while would anybody care what anybody watch? Would there be anything to it. No of course not. This was an opportunity to connect to something that most of us feel when we watch our kids play our kids watch it on TV. Our Kids WanNa be these younger kids that we see Keel Akil Thomas with the winning goal or Barrett hate and plank through a shoulder injury or you know the brilliance of Alexi last frontier. They WANNA be these kids. What's I don't even can't even build a case for what would be wrong with that. No absolutely nothing all right well. We'll we'll exit the Czech Republic With this cute you had some issues getting to the Czech Republic. Well I know I mean you you eventually got. There has to fly along the way. I mean that stuff happens. Coming home was it. Flawless was again like clockwork smooth. Is June on broken glass? It was it was just fantastic. I I'm not sure if it's because I missed the flight on the way over. But somehow all my seating got thrown into the blender so we get to the gate to the check in counter and in Frankfurt Germany. And so I go check in get by Seating Passes Forty D. and twenty eight e. Neither of those are seats. That I'm particularly interested in also in there are no pods in the fortieth row. They're they're smaller pods. You Sit Upright frozen road and so I do fly one hundred and fifty thousand miles a year and I am kind of like a million and a half miles you also you kind of get moved to a more comfortable seat. There were no more comfortable seats. I'm not sure what happened so I'm at the gate. I'm checking in and the there's a connection that Mrs somewhere else so a seat in thirteen thirteen opens up man. I'm all over that like you can't believe so the the woman at the gate. She's really helpful and she says okay. This is your seat. There's still a chance you could get upgraded to business so now I'm like man. I perked up like this is going to be great. Yeah so I'm just waiting around the gate inch. I hear her say into her cellphone. Vonda bar and I'm like and then she hangs up and she turns to me and I'm like this is unbelievable like I just came from Forty D. and I'm going to end up in a pod and she goes good news and I said Oh. I just want like that not for you. The other passenger made so far not doing the bar for me so I ended up enrolled thirteen which was a hell of a lot better than forty. That's awesome and then if Gore had been on his game now if I were there there would be pictorial. Evidence of this would on another to light to Gordon other flight. Which was so. Gordon went Toronto going West but I will say this I will give Gord props. He put together this trip that that we went to Berlin to watch landon play. Yeah he put together a couple of other things that I would have never figured out. The trip turned out to be fantastic. We were we had a great time and come back and I'm jumping back in. My first game is Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg and the jets. The jets had an unbelievable Yup game last night against Toronto looking forward to getting back into it all full. What about the Tampa Bay? Lightning holy smokes. I mean before you left. I think in fairness many of us in the media were wondering with all the coaching changes and whatnot. You know with John Cooper survive and if the Tampa Bay. Lightning didn't respond in some fashion in the second half. What would you embrace bond do now? At the at the time of this recording here on Thursday the Tampa Bay lightning of one eight straight and their second in their division points percentage. I mean that's a fairly remarkable turnaround in relatively short period of time. It's amazing what eight games does for you and I think we're all kind of sitting around waiting for Tampa Bay to catch fire. They they got kicked in pants pretty hard last year when Columbus just shove them out of the playoffs not just that they beat them but they beat them in four games. Tampa looked The looked rattled when they when they got knocked out. And so I think the view was all will see how they respond. But they're not going to be able to really be evaluated until you get into into the playoffs and then pretty soon. October rolls around. They went into New York around the end of October. And they just got spanked. They got crushed and it looked bad so now they've got all these issues. Why checked in a little bit in Tampa and talk to a couple of people there and they felt that early on that. They didn't outside of that week in New York where they were terrible that they'd played. Okay didn't get any points in overtime. Because they never got any games to overtime they they lost didn't regulation so now they're a little bit behind the eight ball. They hadn't played as many games as everybody else sold their. You know your points are GonNa lag a little bit in the in their division. I was given this stat so this this kind of made me look at things a little differently in the Atlantic Division. They've been in the top. Three in points percentage for ninety of the first hundred days of the season. So while we're looking at the points it's really the percentage that matters because everybody's GonNa get to eighty two games anyway of actually right. So they were. They felt like they had played better and not were and weren't rewarded. I don't know if that's the case. All the time like there was another gear there in Tampa for sure but the things that they're working on drake's or trying to be they're trying to be harder in front of their net and in front of the other net. They're trying to take less penalties. Be More more disciplined. They've been practiced. They practice focused that they. They think they're making progress while this stretch would tell us it. They're probably a pretty good groove right now and no matter what happened in the first couple of months there. We are with Boston. Toronto in Tampa sitting at the top of the division again and in whatever order Boston's played themselves back to the pack the lease and the lightning. Or go on the other way. And they're gonNA Mishmash around for those top three spots in the Atlantic well while the Tampa Bay lightning round a good groove the Nashville predators in a nasty rut which ultimately cost Peter Laviola job. Peter Laviola out as head coach of the Nashville predators. John Heinz in tough start for John. Heinz I claim on on the bench. But you know it. Was this somewhat predictable. I guess the only reason I was surprised a little bit by it was the timing. The fact that David Paula general manager probably a week prior to said he wasn't contemplating coaching change but in fairness deployable he. Also then you know as part of the Media availability when the change was announced in hiring of John. Heinz was now said. Look you know the tipping point for me was the classic and how the the Nashville Predators essentially folded in in the outcome of that game man. Coaching is tough is I mean. It's tough but when you look the record of Peter Laviola divisional wins with national presidents trophy a trip to the Stanley Cup. Final do do you just Kinda Slough this one off by saying look every. Nhl Head coach has an expiry date and a shelf life and it was time for change. Why I don't I don't recall ever hearing anybody saying Peter. Laviola doesn't know how to coach your that or that is teams. Don't play style at the players like to play and I do believe eventually that you've got to change the record a little bit and by that. I mean that a coach is going to get let go. I don't sometimes it's not fair. I would say in Nashville. Peter had been there five years but the expectations are very high in Nashville. They've been so good for so long that the team seemed to have lost the reg there. They lost their their ability to play well enough for a long enough period of time to win enough games and so a couple of things. That always are red flags for me. I whenever a coach gets fired I look at I look at three things. immediately Look at the power play. I look at their penalty killing and they look at their goaltending And say what are those because the goaltending will always sink a coach anyway for some but the the special teams if they've got good personnel. Which Nashville does if they're not right. That's kind of a red flag for me. So they're powerplays twenty-third their penalty killing twenty nine. Not You know obviously very not nearly good enough. We know the goaltending has been awful. Aca Rene is sixty second in the NHL. Eight ninety four save percentage which would be fine except this backup is to behind him. Uc Sorrows is sixty fourth. And he's got an eight nine thousand two. You have goaltending like that. Your coach all of a sudden becomes pretty stupid. Be Good goaltending. The coaches really smart. So if you look at their team the goaltending has been good. The special teams haven't been good. They've had a good many players that have under achieved by a long shot kyle tourists. They're paying him. Six million bucks got five goals in thirty five games. He might benefit because pretty clearly him in. Lavi let were not even on the same page. They weren't even in the same book. Michael Greenland is a free agent. At the end of the year. He's got fifteen points is is lowest point total in thirty six games in right his career. Arvidsson got nine goals in thirty games. He's a hell of a player. But that's not nearly enough for him and Ryan Johansen who he traded Seth Jones for. Yeah right like they traded. Seth Jones one of the League's best defense and he's got twenty six points in forty two games so you mix all of that in the only guy that's really had a good year is Roman Yosi Llosa's on eleven game history l. Yet nineteen points. He leads. Filip Forsberg by fifteen points. So you gotTa defensemen leading your team in scoring by fifteen points..

"New Year everyone and welcome to our first episode. Two Thousand Twenty. It is episode fourteen of the Ray and rigs hockey podcast. Darren Gregor along with Rape Ferraro. Rare you well rested I I mean. I'm I'm watching on twitter this week. You're back from the Czech Republic. You're back in the NHL Grind. But YOU'RE GETTING UP TO FORTY FIVE. Am Pacific. I mean clearly clearly. You're traveling your body clock aren't meshing right now. No happy New Year Drake's to you and to all our listeners. Hope everybody's got the nice start out to the new year. I am not even close to being on time. So yesterday. Today is. I believe Thursday. So yeah it was. Wednesday is up to forty five. What do you do it to forty five in the morning? I'm better be sleeping on the day. I do a lot of things at two forty five. Imagine but you weren't you haven't gone to bed yet. No no so. I did a couple of loads of laundry my expenses and book my travel for into the end of March so I was very productive at six o'clock. My head hit my desk like a stone and slipped till eight when the kids got up. And we're ready for school so I'm limping along but no I'm I'm getting there. I'm getting well look. We had Cami on the podcast not that long ago and she described meticulous and sensitive. You are to the cleanliness of your environment and I've witnessed this firsthand traveling with you and obviously sees on a day to day basis in your home but let's back up here a little bit. I share in your appreciation and O'Kane of doing laundry because to me. Laundry is like a fake chore. It seems like you're accomplishing a lot. With very little effort you throw the clothes in there now. You don't even have to worry so much about whites and darks and all that just because all of that and then you let them dry but I I where grow weary of doing laundry is the folding part of things and and you know if one sock doesn't match on pissed off like who would do that. Put both socks in the hamper. And let's get let's get going with okay so I don't mind the folding I I like it to me. It's like it is fake work. It's not like it's hard No. I'm not washing the clothes like my grandmother used to do like. I just pitched him in a machine and I throw them into the other one. The the socks thing he drags you are. You're a few steps in front of me. Okay I've got a thirteen and a ten year old. The chances that those socks all get into the dirty clothes is about zero percent. My favorite is when they clump them up in a ball and throw them in so they all I either. So that's my that bugs me and could anybody throw a shirt in? That's not inside out now that that's not happening so anyways. I like the. I like knocking off all the laundry. I like it clean but I just I go into back. I turn the music on like we're the laundry is and music and folk laundry. Not that's there you go so so looking at value in episode fourteen. We're we're now presenting laundry tips on the podcast. Do not separate anything. It's a waste of time and goes in together. Do not dry your wife's jeans and then she's really sour at you. Because what are you doing all? That's bad news. I get strict instructions when it comes to my wife or my daughter's clothing. Don't dry this or better yet. If you're drying for an hour stopping at thirty and make sure that you hanging so that. I'm going to do that all right. I'm telling you when I push starting the next time I go back. There is what I hear the thing. Go off all right. Talk about kicking off two thousand twenty with a mega guest. Wayne Gretzky the great one is going to join. Us later in episode fourteen. I this guy need as me for a lottery isn't a hockey aside. But he pops up and curious places and he does a ton of travel and it's not all hockey related travel specific to the oilers obviously is son-in-law Dustin Johnson kind of a big deal on the PGA tour. So you'll participate in that. But he's kind enough. Ray Takes fifteen twenty minutes to join us later in the PODCAST NOT GONNA lie. Get Nine on. The podcast is twelve better efforts. I would say I would say I would say so. It is it is amazing to me. How certain athletes and certain sports transcend time because there? There's a period of time when an athlete retires. Now they're still really relevant because everybody remembers them but now you're you get a generation or two away from their playing days. Gretz retired in right around two thousand right. Nineteen Ninety nine nine now. So it's twenty years so anybody. That is twenty five years or twenty eight years old or younger. They have no real recollection other than highlights our old gout. That's on of the brilliance. That Gretz had we talked yet. They know him and then we could talk about this later. But I I. I know you on on twitter earlier. We're of course all in all of the congregated goal in Toronto on on Monday. And we'll talk about that later in the show as well coming up as part of our top five items as a matter of fact but then someone tweeted something about video of Mariel Bugle and it must've been obviously back in the nineties eighties whenever it was but he was getting hooked and hacked and everything from his defensive line pretty much through threes homes and he's still scores a goal of. What would amuse me about? That was all of the backlash that we see. And we hear about almost on a game by game basis for those who are connor mcdavid fans and I think we all are obviously about how he's you know obstructed on a shift by shift basis that it's not even close. Who's watched that video if you haven't seen it Ivory tweeted it. You could find it my twitter account. Just watch it and please note at no time. Did an officials hand to go in the air so I tweeted out. There were six hooks on this play and Andre Kole. Petar answered decide. You missed to hold as well. It was it was A. It's an amazing piece of video. Know what I do remember dregs about that about that time when Mario complained about all the hooking and holding he actually was criticized. Pretty roundly furthering complainer. Now you look at it and you go well. No wonder at the time. We didn't even notice. That was just the way the game was but he was like. This is ridiculous and he was more than right. And it's proven to be right because the game has changed so much that the video is fantastic by two referees. Imagine the number of goals. Mario would've scored Wayne. Gretzky finished his career with eight hundred. Ninety four I mean if the game were called the same way you would have scored six hundred goals. Gretzky widow scored over a thousand. I mean and Mary Likewise Mary would have been literally unstoppable on the six foot or yeah with that ability. Just think of him. Eric Lindros in today's game. How were you gonNA stop them? Cau- Mario's at a different level but Lindros injuries aside. Who is going to stop him? You wouldn't you just. You just couldn't know all right. We've got plenty coming up on the podcasts or throat punch candidates or warmed up teed up ready to fly. We'll take you into the segment ask Ray and dregs. And we'll also announce her first half winner of the rate and Greg's hockey fantasy pool. Now you're just back from the Czech Republic. Tell me if I'm wrong here. The gold medal game between Canada and Russia has to be has to be up there among a highlight game. That you've called to this point of your broadcast career. I would say in the top few that I've done to them. Gold Medal Games. One of them was the other day when Canada down three one in the third period came back to to win against Russia. The other would have been twenty fifteen Canada Russia gold medal game. Was this six five wild crazy thing in Toronto unbelievable and what I what really connected me to that game dregs was. I was between the benches for this last one. I was up top like you could see these kids just like emotional swings in the game. It was just amazing. This tournament gets better and better More and more people watched we had over four million people watch on tsn and rds. And that's a game from Europe. That was eleven o'clock in the morning back here in Canada On against some pretty heavy traffic on. Nfl playoff weekend and things. But the game just seems to draw more and more people in I can't remember a better final in Europe that that we've gotten to call. It was amazing. I want your thought on travel experience coming back because that that always amuses me and our podcast listeners. But I'm feeling a little testy but feisty today so maybe we'll we'll leave the European experience with this. I I give him noise when media or fans start the tournament. And you can you. It's like clockwork every year. Where they're like Oh. Dsm puts too much pressure on these young boys. You know this is all about TV. This is all about ratings. I mean these kids would give anything to make this team and to have the opportunity to win a gold medal for their country. Of course there's pressure but isn't there pressure on an eighteen. Nineteen twenty year old Blair in playing in in the Memorial Cup or in the playoffs or any big game in college junior etcetera. I mean do you get is annoyed by The the negativity that comes prior to this. Turn on the so-called pressure resided. Of course I do. I mean now that I. I've done the tournament nine times. I'm certainly more sensitive to it. More sensitive to the criticism that as you say is like clockwork when the tournament starts funny. Part is most of the people that are bitching about the tournament. They're watching it so if it so offensive to them. Don't watch now. The tournament is fantastic. It these kids play their hearts out. They get a chance to to wear their country's flag on their chest and for many of them a good many of them. These are the biggest most important games that they will ever in their lives. I remember a goalie. Dennis God la the first place for Slovakia at.

"I tapping on had a good one more some of the guys that come to mind for spent has planned the respective sport. That could make the transition from player to coach there's so many guys out. There said let's start with you. Big fella. I go with Jason Kidd on this phone. That's that's eight. I wasn't expecting to hear you know, Hugh is an incredible player in the NBA us one of the best passers of all time. And he came after he retired. He came to the Brooklyn nets. And that was a bit of a disaster that goes to Milwaukee, and they let them go. Now, he's in L A as an assistant. I believe that's breaking new that we have here down Detroit. Frank Vogel will now be the next Lakers head coach and Jason Kidd joining him from the first chair on his right as the head assistant coach that's huge news for the Lakers. Lebron James because Frank Vogel will be probably the head coach for the first twenty games before they have to make the make the next coaching change. So that's huge the city of LA. Right. Oh, yeah. Time will tell probably not honestly. I got a good one. If no one else does Wayne Gretzky, actually, Wayne Gretzky is the goat and the game of hockey, but it didn't really pan out as a head coach. She he was also part owner of the Phoenix coyotes. But he never made the playoffs in never was able to lead us to the playoffs as a coach. But I think we all know how great he was as a player. So that's a good one for me. Mime legal. Isaiah Thomas not the Isaiah Thomas in Denver right now. That's not seeing the floor. Isaiah Thomas that Detroit legend guys, we think basketball. And you think about guys that run the floor, and who translate typically the best when they go from player to coach who could position is that point guard. Right. Anything about baseball. Whose was that position? Catcher guys at really see the field that no the game the best and Isaiah Thomas really couldn't get it done. When it comes to coaching were being an executive and things went downhill fry what he took over in the coaching game with the Pacers. What's New York Knicks who was an executive with the Phoenix Suns in things really didn't work out fries area. And that's surprising. Because when you think about today's NBA. What do you say about guys that are gonna be coaches that you could really see in the future, whose names that come to mind? I think resign Rondo I think just constant point guards are in the NBA right now that can make the coaching change and Zach Thomas when you think about a one of the best floor generals ever, one of the best point guards of all time the best Detroit piston point guard ever. He couldn't make the transition coaching that might be because the roster was a little bit weak. But you know, I just really didn't get done and players fans other coaches in the league, but didn't respect it when he put the suit and tie on at the on the coaching change. How about you, Tom? Well, yeah, I was gonna say say at Thomas put another one another good one is Kevin mckell hall of Famer from Boston and when three NBA titles in his career and seven time all star. Parents. He ended up returning to his native town of Minnesota were two stints and foreign oh five and then again, oh eight nine with the Timberwolves head coach. And in that time he was just thirty nine and fifty five no playoff. Appearances for him as a coach even though that remain in his playing days, so Mikhail's another good mentioned for that list of bad. Good players who ended up being pretty bad coaches, eight hundred nine two three nine three five are some guys that couldn't make the change from player to coach. What about Magic Johnson five and eleven in nineteen ninety four with the respected, Los Angeles Lakers. Alan Trammell and travel with the Detroit Tigers about Pete Rose. We all know what happened in Cincinnati with the big fella gambling on the games. Things went downhill for PD rose in the Cincinnati Reds. So many guys are so named algebra Baylor and other guy, but didn't Kevin McHale at he was the head coach of the Houston Rockets before Tony, right? Yeah. Oh, yeah. Or I thought it was was he they didn't do much though was GM that coach that was when the rockets tweet Howard. I think that was beginning that was Jeremy Lin days beginning of the James harden era. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. He he's definitely. Underachieved? These are some good ones though, I didn't even realize there were that many. And if we extended this to front office members GM's owners, we could have a an even longer list. Oh, definitely. What's your some names from the listening audience eight hundred nine two three nine three five is the phone number? We heard Gretzky we've heard Isaiah Thomas. Magic shots at Kevin kale, Jason Kidd. There's so many nowadays that just can't get it done. And what's the reason why so many questions because who sees the who knows the game better than guys who played it for that many years? Like Magic Johnson even as an executive magic get the job done. Maybe for Magic Johnson wasn't the market that was unfair for him as a player or not as a player because he was fantastic as a coach is an executive is it the Los Angeles market that they get screwed up maybe a little bit. But he also played there. So it's hard to tell you can thrive as a player, you know there. There's no reason. You shouldn't be able to thrive as a coach and in the same market. I mean, but there's some of these guys at Thomas he kinda struggled with people over the course of his career. And maybe that translated to the head coaching position. Maybe he wasn't great with other people his players, maybe not the best at managing them. Maybe that goes into it. But I really I'm not smart enough to tell you why these guys can't figure it out as a head coach. There's just there's so many factors that go into that. So many different things that cause who knows the game better than the guys who played saying what about you. What's your thoughts? Why can't guys make the transition? It's tough to make the trick. Because very limited guys at successful players that made the transition to coach, you know, I think there there are some guys that maybe are very particular. And maybe would want to coach how they would want their coach to have coached them when they were players. And so there guys, and they all they all have different pref. References to Tope what a coach the ideal coach is like, and so I think that that player might take their their scenario of an ideal coach, and it might not fit the same idea as the players, and I think that's that's what makes the transition difficult because you have to adapt. And I think guy like Steve Kerr Brad Stevens they've done that. I mean Brad Stevens wasn't. It wasn't a player in the NBA young though. But yeah. They're they're fairly young in the NBA coaching business and. Especially in Golden State allocates, current I go all these guys are coming in and out the Kevin Durant us able to adjust to keep the chemistry available, and we were talking about how Steph curry was able to adjust to that as well. And Brad Stevens, these guys are players coaches. And I think that it's very difficult to do that. A lot based off of a player preference. Eight hundred nine two three nine three five. Let's make the switch here for the last couple of minutes in this segment. Who's kind of the best players to make the best transition into the coaching job. Let's hear some names. I'm gonna throw one out Doc Rivers. For a couple years in the league sticker. You know, one of the best coaches in the NBA right now. Steve Kerr, Doc Rivers, so many different guys who were some other names eight hundred nine two three nine three eight five save. But you Bill Russell's another name. Yeah. I I was going to go with the Doc Rivers. But that was taken from me. But there's just so many examples out there. Phil jackson. Yeah. Phil Jackson was one. How about a guy that wasn't wasn't exactly player. Have a Van Gundy. Stamping gundy. Really the. Yes. Now, you're serious. So many people couldn't see your facial expression on that. But we are live on Facebook. The Facebook was listening thought they know what we're talking about your face would use. So, yeah, you're shredded as an arrow. I called you out on that don't ever bring that name up in miss. All right. All right. You understand me? Yes, sir. Oxy? Terrible to say, STAN Van Gundy. His crying. You can't see it. But. Jim harbaugh. You could call him good or bad, whatever you want. But he was right. All right. He's not good. He's great truck are Tyler. And when he beats when he beats Ohio State this year in house over are you kidding? And the big house things are going to erupt in the hard rock still works through. You're you're you're in a c-, folks. When Michigan beats Ohio State forty nine to six and then you'll wake up and head into work. And then you'll guys wake up from this nightmare of Iraqi Lombardi kind of era that's going on right now. I'm still waiting to wake up from that a jail and watch Jackson trouble with the snap play get out. And it hasn't had. You're on thin ice right now. What do I say, you're you're really pushing the limits. Hey, so is Harbaugh. He's on thin ice. Yes. He is. He's on a candle light. Now, his seats very very warm. If you can't get a job done this year with Ohio State, Michigan state because those games are always scary to watch things will be tough in Ann Arbor. They always are. Yeah. So with your severe coaching names, folks. I know see I really dampen the mood when he brought up stamping when she usually does what else brother, Jeff. He's definitely one of the best coaches. He go to throw his body in front of the players. We they won't get punched. And they plays full-time the Van Gundy broS did play. I think d to ball. So they did play the game. But yeah, we the so Sam there you go. He he did play. And he was a good coach except when he arrived in Detroit. Well, he was for twenty sixteen. I would say I trust saying stay at Van Gundy that next season happened and all that trust. You know, what happened what right down the toilet? I would argue who's a worse executive than he is a head coach because he's not he's not a bad head coach. He has a great winning percentage over the years, but he kinda screwed up the franchise for years to come as a as an executive not as a coach. Yeah. That's that's also a tough thing to do. And when people throw that on like Doc Rivers when he was in LA got executive coach role. Stay advan gutting Detroit executive coach role and sometimes guys can't handle forming their own basketball team and running the front office and doing all the extra stuff the scientists worrying about putting the product on the floor to win ballgames and helped them win ballgames. So things don't always translate from executive coach to player to coach things are always up in the air, Mike Ditka's and also another name that you know. In the NFL for a couple of years. One of the greatest coaches ever and the NFL Larry Bird coached the Pacers for awhile. He's also an executive now. So things are things are always great to hear for success stories like Larry Bird. Mike ditka. Definitely here on the patriot FM one zero one point five AM fourteen hundred the.

Forty years old she'll come alive and get a big movie if somebody obviously they're going the same way next Helgi again is it. Is what else will come alive? Kissed. Cargo doodle do it's been awhile since that Kakuta, dude. Yeah. You back on the show for a day before you take off another week schedule. I see. Yes. So. Yeah. Last night, fellows, I was hanging out in in Westlake on new decree went to Tuscany Italian restaurant that criminals, I think a little bit. That's the talian. Go ahead. Make the fat joke. No. No als you you missed it last week, but he made a lot of fat jokes lesson. I didn't make jokes whose factual there's another thing l z missed. In his room and plays. Well, anyway. I was having dinner. I was having dinner at this restaurant on top of having dinner there. I had a couple of people talking to me, whatever do was making his point one me to know, some people that I didn't necessarily know. He's like, oh, you know, this person that you know, texts and said, oh, I saw I'm sitting here having dinner next Keyshawn Johnson. I'm like, I don't know them. I know of them all they say, no, you said, no, no. So incomes, the great one Wayne Gretzky. Okay. Okay. So I had a opportunity to sit next to Wayne, and you know, chop it up a little bit. And he said that he enjoys listening to us in the morning, Wayne Gretzky GSP in Los Angeles. No ESPN LA the morning show. Keyshawn l z and Travis. So what you did there, Andy? Yeah. Yeah. That was good. And he said that you listen to Caspian Los you late, son. He was just saying how you enjoyed it. And we we you know, we're on point. And that's the I can name drop because his Wayne Gretzky, and I actually talked to Wayne Gretzky, and he said he'll see us Thursday at the Genesis open is threat Rivera and Riviere in. He would pop in and have a few words with for somebody like you does it still feel cool to get a compliment like that from Wayne Gretzky? I mean. Yeah, he gave you an assist. I haven't seen. I haven't seen Wayne last time. I saw him was in New York. I mean, I'm seeing him as he played for the Rangers. Or no, he just in New York at the all star. Cafe remember that? And he played in pebble in came marquess home to have something to eat. And I don't think he's involved in Phoenix from where think he's out. Okay. Did you have with them a puck? Now. I just always imagined hockey guys have mucks with he wasn't big. Now. He's not a big guy. He's not big small. But he was good. Yeah. No, no. He was great. Really? Did you ask him about Paulina? USC they're recruiting class in the books. Twenty-six players eight of them four stars eighteen three stars stating three star..

"Like third wonder woman movie coming out. It'd be. Did. I mean, that's the seeming. It's even another superhero game. Who knows maybe some original? I could be doing something Sherlock whole different dark detective man Brown. Yes. A gritty Saif. Okay. Fucking off bugs means head. So the game starts somebody's killed bug me. And then like despite feeling okay. About him finally being dead out of your life. You still feel compelled all the mysteries a greeter evil out. There needs to be stopped. And then it turns out it's the joker cycle Brown. Oh, he's he's been investigating himself. But he was in a few state here to say that the joker will be this encyclopedia Browde game park hamels to this. Very exciting. That's right. I'm the officer. Technically, it was really in the game. He was out of hallucinated the whole time. But totally in the till. You know, whatever. I think there are fun ways to tease the stuff that's in your game. But like these like half truth is like, it's technically not a lie. He's not actually in it. He's like fuck all kind of a live off. It just makes any next announcement. You're gonna make less credible. Yeah. A lot of rhetoric questions this week. I just wonder like the rock steady thing. Like that's another case of like, it's been a long time. They've made a game. Have they had to staff up to station of supporting consoles have they had some turnover where they do. They work on a game that got totally derailed. Like, maybe they have canceled of superman games. Also those. Oh, you don't hear about a lot of games that don't exist? I trying to say that. But there are games that like you miss one hundred percent of the games that don't get announce this, right? Let me get away and Gretzky game. Yes. I think it wasn't familiar twenty fifty. Yes. It was this roughly around e-3 will be four years since Arkham night came out. So the Gretzky wing fly in look thing sheriff the redwing, I know it's not his. Throws down oil. It's the penguin. Yeah. It's actually just remastered of the first rock steady Batman, but with Wayne Gretzky and instead all number ninety nine himself. Nice smile that guy. He's on collected the money that he's on in the game wove when he holds the money somehow worth twice as much. All right. A lot of questions about old stuff this week for whatever reason Nick from Brooklyn. I mean, I've been playing Commodore sixty four games a lot lately. So fair. What did it become apparent that? Alter games was. In fact, just Kanani was at a known quantity at the time. Was there a reaction from into of America to the blatant work around of their licensing restrictions? I think that that was something they were trying to hide from Nintendo. I think that was just something that like was okay. With the letter of the law is this. We're setting this up like I can't imagine any scenario into going on there. So Nintendo had a restriction that a publisher could only publish x number of games a year on their platform. So to get around this NAMI started up a sub label called altri games and metal gear as technically released and published by ultra and claim had L J N. Oh, wait Eljay was just a claim. Really? Yeah. And also there's warriors was not out again and claim also had on Genesis. They had flying edge. Also, just claim did say they did fucking. I don't know. And. Yeah. So you had you had studios publishers just coming up with weird subsidiaries with different names. I want to say that this even existed in Japan. And that's why you have Namco and nam Kat. But maybe that's different that might be different different reason for that. Because I think the nam cotton name maybe appeared on non intendo products as well. But I ninja turtles game on the was ultra I think both of them. Yeah. Okay. Game was an ultra game skate or die. Yeah. Yeah. Metal gear and snake's revenge. Trying to think if there were any others like maybe it's not the same case, but like taxation or knacks at became tax N or vice versus Zemo. Yeah. And they could feel each other's pain. When you hit one of them the other one. We're putting out low G, man..
