a phone line with doctor cope and are you there It's John Williams Jeffrey How are you sir Great John It's good hearing Good hearing your voice I'm glad I'm back Yeah this whole Spotify things pretty crazy I thought the same thing when I first heard about it is it possible that we're there's some kind of cyber thing going on I think we're all worried about that I was reading that the people feared the Russian army because they had spent time modernizing both the equipment to training their troops lo and behold they're not that modern They're still suffering for some of the same issues they used to And then they said yeah but we know that the Russians are good at hacking and cyber warfare and lo and behold they have not been that efficient if nothing else in that arena either So one of the consequences of this war may be that we're getting a good look at just how good the Russian army operates and it's not so good these days is it Doc I don't know I sure wouldn't want to be a Ukrainian right now right I mean I think about that's where my grandfather came from from the United States in 1904 And there's so many of us who have those kinds of connections To Ukraine we have a large Ukrainian population in the United States right now It is pretty it's just brutal to live through something like that and for all of us to think that we're back in a time of a great big land war I think we all thought those days were over and apparently they're not So let's hope for the best And they're also continuing to have a big COVID problem that hasn't had much hasn't gotten much publicity but Ukraine before the invasion was dealing with omicron Can you imagine and now there's over a million and a half refugees moving across international borders So they're going to be bringing the amacrine with them too So there's a whole there's that whole COVID overlay which obviously doesn't feel as important as a shooting war but boy I mean all that's going on too It's just so much to think about and be concerned about No kidding Doctor Jeffrey cope is on a phone line This conversation is sponsored by northwestern medicine relentless in their pursuit of better healthcare 6 million people across the globe We just crossed that threshold last week have died due to COVID And I thought about that If you've got 2 million refugees coming out of Ukraine and pouring into Poland and all of those other countries boy that's even if even if it's just the remnants of omicron there when you have that many people compact in that smaller space that's where variants occur right Doctor that's how you get another version Certainly I mean there's a lot of concern we have that many people moving and is refugees in an unorganized manner There certainly are not public health measures put in place We know throughout history when that many refugees move there's all kinds of infectious diseases that can complicate the movement of millions of refugees We think about COVID but there's other types of infections that can occur as well So this will be part of the unfolding story unfortunately of what's going on in Eastern Europe right now We'll continue to think about and feel about and follow that I did want to ask you about COVID here in the Chicago area The Chicago teachers union in Chicago public schools are disagreeing at least on how much the union should have been brought into the decision to make the mask optional but just from a medical standpoint would you stand with CPS at I shouldn't say stand I don't want to make this a political statement on your part but do you think it's wise to allow the schools to make the masked optional starting Monday I do I do I think it's time I think we're seeing this now in the vast majority of school districts around the country The time has come to do that Obviously the complexities in the relationship between the Chicago teachers union and CPS that's a whole nother subject And I hope that they can quickly come to an accommodation by the last thing we want to see Jen is another job action on the part of CTU I mean that would just be horrendous if they had happened right now So let's hope they can get together and figure out what they got what they need to do to find the combination We got to educate our kids and I think the mask option all makes a lot of sense now The vaccination rates of the students is low compared to the population and adults particularly I'll hit you with a couple of numbers and then just reflect on that for a second too doctor You may have a question as well Three one
