He continued to crash into an apartment complex until finally losing control when officers put down some spike strips. The driver is expected to face charges for DUI, vehicle assault fleeing and possession of a stolen vehicle. Washington state patrol troopers and social workers spent time in recent days at the site of a homeless encampment beneath the I 5 ship canal bridge that comes amid demands from families living near by for the encampments removal, after reports of open drug use, fires and shootings all within a block of a school. The job losses are affecting workers in surface devices, mixed reality hardware, and Xbox. This is part of a plan announced last month to lay off 10,000 workers at Microsoft. They are a sign of what becomes but John Logan, a labor expert at San Francisco state is becoming increasingly pessimistic. During previous economic dietary use, job losses in the tech industry have kind of foreshadowed a job losses in the economy more broadly. These layoffs are reportedly impacting 617 Microsoft employees in Redmond, Bellevue and issaquah, since January, the job losses numbered more than 1400. Logan isn't buying into talk. This is going to be a soft recession either. 8, 9, 10% levels of unemployment. I do think potential for being a significant concern. A second man was found shot in the hand a short time later he is also expected to recover, troopers are searching for the shooter and trying to figure out if a nearby homeless encampment might be involved. COVID activity is high again in the state's most populous county, but Ryan Harris tells us it's not ready for a return to a mask mandate yet. King County is seeing more new COVID cases per day than the peak of the delta surge with hospitalizations again rising, but at 82% vaccination rate keeping hospitalizations and deaths somewhat in check. County health officer doctor Jeff duchin says they are in talks about a mask mandate, but that it's not an easy question because things change over time. If we were seeing a level of severity of illness that we saw before people were as well vaccinated as they are now, I think we would be moving more quickly to such measures as a mask mandate. We're taking into account the unpredictable nature of the evolution of these variants, the relatively lesser impact on hospitalizations and deaths and severe outcomes. Duchin says COVID is far from over and that layered protections are still needed, starting with you keeping up the date on your vaccinations and boosters. He says for now, he'd like to see us mask up without being forced. Ryan Harris northwest news radio. Several unvaccinated former firefighters accuse eastside fire and rescue of discrimination. The firefighters lost their jobs because they didn't get the COVID shot, or an improved exemption. Agency spokesperson Catherine brielle says they were just following the law. "Than 48 hours from the inauguration reporting in downtown Washington. I'm Tom Drowsy. The Department of Defense says there's no direct threat of an insider attack on the inauguration. But they're leaving no stone unturned after police arrested at least one off duty National Guardsmen for joining the insurrection of the U. S. Capitol. The FBI is now betting all 25,000 National Guard members deployed to Washington D. C. 400 of those troops are from our state. It's just another layer and then a layer on top of that, just to be absolutely certain. But everybody joining the military is screened in and for an event like this, you're screened out right now. Intelligence officials are checking case files as well as watch lists. Troops arriving in D. C are also being trained to report anything inappropriate to their chain of command. Joe Biden is planning to sign dozens of executive orders and his first days of presidency. Many would reverse the policies of President Trump, including one just announced today. The White House said the president would lift coronavirus travel restrictions for the UK parts of Europe in Brazil, starting January 26th. That's the same day all travelers have to show it negative covert 19 test to enter the United States. The incoming White House press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted today the administration does not intend to lift the restrictions on advice from their medical team. Instead, they plan to strengthen health measures for international traveler. Washington State Patrol hopeful the state capital remains calm throughout the week, just like it was over the weekend. The National Guard Providing security after the FBI warned about the potential of armed protests at all. 50 State capitals. The weekend passed without any disturbances. Now, if the calm continues, State Patrol says it could begin a draw down after inauguration Day. There simply is no guarantees of that way. Have to be aware that another key word that we've been using is is preparedness. We've got to be prepared for whatever may come our way. State intelligence team says there are currently no active threats in the state. A small group of protesters kept the state patrol busy today when they walked onto the interstate and held up traffic.
