"By beating one of the two best teams on their schedule. And they lost. A both won by twenty lost one of them by twenty points us, you sure, they beat Florida Florida's a higher rank than than LSU. I'll give LSU a pass for the for the seven overtimes. I also think it's funny. How coaches do say they don't like moral victories. They're not into that. But they will cite close losses to convince others that they're one of the best. I mean, hey, that's what coaches do. Right. You gotta be politicians as well. And don't conflict for best with four most talented as well. Because when you have the superior talent that should equate to superior performance it shouldn't allow you to increase your margin for error. You can't have it both ways if you're Georgia. You got great talent. He still got a win games. And you get the increased perception of playing in the SEC because you get better strike the schedule. Still gotta take care of those games. You still got you can't have multiple losses. And that's where the committee has shown if you lose two games, you're not gonna make it. If you get if you lose a game by more than two touchdowns, you're not gonna make it. And it's been pretty pretty simple here for the first five years of play. This is one of the reasons I love with this committee has done from the very first year in two thousand fourteen head to head didn't seem like it was respected when TCU and Baylor. You know, there was a big debate about that. And they finally flipped it and switched it in the last rankings. So it's like, okay. But where was this before? I mean you had a head to head victory. Well, you've got Ohio State one ahead of Michigan. Right. Well, how state beat Michigan? You got four two one ahead of LSU four to beat LSU. And I love it that the committee is showing respect not just for conference championships. But for head to head you could argue, you know, about best the definition of best in, you know, whether it should be best or whether it should be most deserving. But I think that one thing that the committee has made clear where there was some question of years ago is okay. When you say best, do you mean who are the best teams right now on this last? Day of the season. Or do you mean who were the best teams from start to finish weighing every week equally? And I think they have said pretty emphatically that it's the entire body of work that the only thing that makes the final game more than in the first game is that you're you're checking that extra box for being a conference champion, but the impact of the game itself. And even the significance. If you lose it is not any greater because it's later, and I think right. We've seen this year is a great example with Ohio State because the last two weeks they look fantastic, but it didn't undo a lot of the inconsistency that they had earlier in the season. And we've seen other teams in the last couple years that lost him games in September. But man, they looked really good down the stretch. But they still couldn't overcome what happened in September conference championships are not required. But they are emphasized and conference championship games can either confirm your body of work, and how you were or they can kind of belie the performance of your body work for Ohio State. It confirmed who they were their superior team that sometimes plays down to the competition. There were some inconsistencies. I would loved rob Mullins co selection committee chair when asked what about Ohio State to just go Purdue. Purdue you can talk about inconsistencies all you want. You can't lose by twenty nine two thousand six sixteen. What you need help on top of that you need help from other teams in order to bounce back from that and rectify that laws. I think in the case of Ohio State this year. It was more than Purdue get into it. And I realized that is a significant loss by twenty nine points to a team that finished six and six, but you could also make the argument that they blew out a top ten team. Oh, oklahoma. Didn't even play a top ten team. They've nothing close to what house state did against Michigan. What makes the difference is that Ohio State? In addition to the twenty nine point loss had the close win against Maryland, the close win against Nebraska, and they had some others that maybe weren't quite as close on the scoreboard. But they were shaky if you watch the game from start to finish. And and to that end Oklahoma was very close in some games as well. But they're one comes back to that one loss. How bad is your bad? And what we saw from Ohio State. It could be pretty bad. But it doesn't matter who you play. I hear a point of view that I disagree with that says, well, if you lost two games last two games, you got to win them. It doesn't matter. You plagiarize two games. That's it. You lost two games. But Georgia their second loss was to number one Alabama in a in a hard fought close game. And nobody else in contention for the playoff had to face Alabama. They did. And all that means for sure is Georgia's not as good as Alabama, which means they could be the second best team in the country third or the fourth. And that's why I would've loved to seen if Georgia played LSU close, right? Lost by seven obviously, they're undefeated going into Bama, they're probably both in. But if you're if it's a close lost to LSU what happens then terms of body work that would have been that would have been interesting to see we referenced Patrick, Pat Chung, his the Washington state AD he made this comment earlier tonight, by the way college game college football playoff special. Matt Brad Trevor's we put the finishing touches on this program. Pat. Sunset we can easily infer that where we're ranked as it is a result of maybe the perception of the league that was a quote inside a bunch of other quotes, I'm not taking that out of context essentially saying it's because of perception, right or wrong. I I think that's absolutely true. I don't even think it's a false perception the Pac twelve they were down this year and look at it certainly didn't help they were one and eight in bowl games last year. I think that was the record. I know they only won one Utah was the only winter. Yeah. And and so it was a bad. Look it was a long off season. They knew they had to step up their game this year, and they didn't, you know, Washington lost a close game against Auburn and a not so neutral site Atlanta to open the season, and it was all downhill from there. They just they didn't get the job done and the important non conference games their best teams lost in conference and at the end of the day Washington state while they were a great story. They had one win over the committee's top. Twenty five and that was against Utah. And it wasn't quite enough. When you put them up against some other teams. I look I could argue four Washington state against some teams that are ranked just barely ahead of them. And that's that's fine. But Washington state did not make it clear cut that they had the opportunity by by beating Washington or beating USC winning either of those games to to make it obvious for the committee. And they didn't do it. When the when the perception is week for a league, you need to have a team rise above because otherwise it just looks like a a bunch of five foot ten people fighting. Okay. What's what's happening here? Amongst this group of their non conference schedule was awful. Yeah. In a year where there weren't many quality wins to be had in conference play. If you could make Trevor one changed either the the way we do rankings or the selection committee. What would that be? I would want them to adjust the weight that they give to certain criterion. I don't like it. They conference championship is a tiebreaker to be used at the end of the process only if you can't differentiate teams by other means, I think that conference champions should be a high bar that other means need to overcome. Now, you can't overcome and you and you have to cover championship is not absolute because you've only got four Burs and you've got five power five conferences. But I think the conference champion should be the first thing that you put up there that other criterion. I criteria have to be used to define a team as unequivocally better that's written in their guidelines. But when they speak they say that if we can't differentiate the teams if they're relatively close, then we go to tiebreakers one of which is conference champion. I think they should reverse that when it comes to the playoff selection committee and who's on it. I've I've said before that I don't think current athletic director should be on there. I don't know how. You have a full-time job. And also invest this much time to watch tape watch film and invest enough to get involved with that. I think more former coaches should be on the committee. I want ALPHA's in there too. And I don't want any. I don't need recusals let the former coaches go at it. They can see through the BS if they've got it. And that way, you know, these guys are digging their heels in on something and fighting for Xs and os. And I'd also like to see a selection committee chair who is a former football coaches. Well, I'd like to hear Xs and os in a recent interview I'd like to hear why what's wrong with their defense. What are you seeing not just trying to articulate what the committee feels for me? I would not only like to see their actual schedule strength numbers. Not just hero. This team's got stronger schedule that based on what like what what are you looking at? But I also would like to see their schedule. Strength. Be calculated from top team perspective. What I mean by that is when you see all these schedules strength rankings everywhere, you look those are done based on how difficult is it to manage that schedule for an average team. For the sake of the playoff because their job is determined the four best what they need to look at it. How difficult is it to win against that schedule? If you were a top five caliber team that means more to me than the way they're currently doing Clemson favored by eleven and a half over Notre Dame. Bama favored by two touchdowns over Oklahoma. Anyone taking the points or we laying? I'm here. I'll let you know. I'm laying them to double digit favorites there in the national semifinals up next is the locker we'll be back next Saturday night for the Heisman ceremony. It's college game day here at ESPN radio..

"There was not really a a moment of where the the action slowed and you can say, okay. Nine hundred forty yards means no defense. But we're we're a little bit used to that with Washington state. The surprising thing was that Stanford sort of adopted the Washington state offensive philosophy. David Shaw, very. Wiley and his changing his his offensive stripes. And and Stanford responded really, well, but you know, it came down to one possession in the second half. And Stanford scored too quickly at the end of the game. They gave Washington state and Menchu a minute and a half. And they went down and kicked a field goal. It was a terrific game start to finish. And today on Twitter if you watched. Watched over the weekend. You saw a game day sign from it might have been from Pullman. But you had a sign that showed remember that George Costanza picture the timeless art of seduction, and they put Mike leeches head on their instead of Costanza 's and there's a picture from Washington state, cougar football of Mike Leach standing there with the fans who had the sign and he's with the sign itself, and and Mike Leach tweets Washington state fans are real and they're spectacular. So well done Mike Leach SE continues to to win it all in all both on and off the field. How about a disappointing performance McGee something that really made? You really is that is that how we're doing this right now. Well, I I mean, listen, I think that the demise of Washington over the last couple of weeks has been little stunning, you know, and and it's just they can't score. And you know, all. Respect Cal who's I think better than we thought they were going to be. But it's just that that part really really surprised me. And then, you know, I I'll believed that Iowa was gonna win it Penn State after I had seen island person that we've seen before. And and they just made bad decisions. I normally there. So the sound when it comes to whatever the game plan is. But there were there were certainly some okay. Is that that's the play. We're going with in this situation. It was an interesting is. So those are two teams that I thought certainly we all believe that Washington had a chance to make the playoff at the start of the year. Now, they have three losses, and I will was a team that I really believed could maybe sneak into door at least at least be the annual big ten champion who. Who gets to complain about the committee when it all it was all said and done I thought maybe they at least get to be this case Ivan back to Jake Browning in Washington. So he's benched in the third quarter against Cal and the second pass from the backup. Jay cantor goes for pick six they lose twelve ten Brown and goes eleven to twenty one for buck. Forty eight touchdown in a pick their six three out of the north and not out of the north race. But out of any national conversation, thankfully, the FBI. No longer has them as the favourite from the bag twelve to to have a shot at the college football playoff. But I haven't to to mcgee's point Browning in year four under coach Peterson that that is one of the more surprising regressions that you've seen here in college football. Well, it is. And it's I won't penitent Tirlian Jake Browning..

"Because listen to draw of college sports is the environment. That's what you're getting in the G league. You're not going to get an environment. That's going to entice you to be better than you wanna be yourself. That's gotta be intrinsic that has got to be a level of motivation that comes from you just wanting to do this thing more than everybody else and the money again. That's the other part about pro sports is when you go to pro facilities for the most part. This is the interesting part about the NFL is by and large. They're not go. Auty facilities because they don't have to draw you in. They don't have to recruit you. They don't have to do any of that. You're getting paid money to do a job you show up and you do that job, and you're paid large sums of money in exchange for it. This is the beginning version of that. This is the Genesis of that for players trying to work their way into the NBA because then the other side for college. You've got big lavish facilities, you are celebrated on campus. And you've got these unbelievable environments that they always talk about college sports. And so that's where we go this weekend. That's where we go in the world of college sports this weekend when we look at where college game day is going to be and this is. This is pretty wild. So this weekend college game day is heading to Pullman Washington. Home of the Washington state Cougars. Now, any of you guys have been watching college game day for awhile might be familiar with old crimson. It's the Washington game day flag that is flown at every college game day broadcast of the last fifteen years. It has been a constant fixture here on the ESPN cafeteria cafeteria that is built into folklore its own right old crimson hangs right by the Starbucks Coffee. Stan. So I see a whole lot of it. It is gone this week. That's where you want eighty percent of those to come from seniors and juniors you look at their defense, ten freshmen five sophomores only to registered software. So those are second year players, right? Only one senior Darius picket. You look at their. Offense. You turn it around and they have seven freshman five of those true freshman including their starting quarterback and then five sophomores so more than half of both sides of the ball. There's top twenty two are underclassmen. It's hard to win that way anywhere. Love you And I was just calling into first of all say thank you for your service and sacrifice for this country I am a huge military order sorry For anyone that wants to say anything bad about somebody in the. Military that has never walked in. There And especially John McColl what he went through. I, don't know if anybody can sit at a couple of minutes of what. That man went through south no. And it was all he when the newspapers reported that Admiral John McCain the second son was shot down all upset was out the window They knew the North Vietnamese figured. Out it was him they gave him better medical treatment and then when he healed up and they realize what a propaganda coup it would be if they released him out of charity or. Or magnanimity and. He said no he said no we have a code of conduct first in first out I can't. Line jump shot instead of conduct and they strapped him to a Rafter. And they began to beat the living crap out of him for weeks and weeks. And weeks and near he nearly died he. Actually prepared his on. Suicide and the North Vietnamese guards. Realize what a failure that. Would be and the other POW's told. Them to leave and he and he would, that's the reason he's he's a hero any I can get shot. Down over Hanoi that's not why the guy is a hero it's because xactly exactly I know exactly what. You're, saying never served in the military I've had family members in their Bank. I've never known anybody to survive. Like that and I have some Respect. But I also wanted to say about Megan. McCain I love her She is such, a strong inspiration for women and I didn't always care about John's politics but I respected him because he listened and, he did a met a. Lot of, that respect for service like that, but he was great congressman so I I don't have anything like that but, I was wasn't calling on the. Radio because I don't have a TV but she. May be cry And like. I say. Our she's. A personal friend I filled in, for her, for years for for, three years during her show and I can, say I if if anyone if John McCain's, legendary temper went to anyone in his DNA chain it's our biggest she when she goes to another gear when when, you poke her about something. She deeply, believes in oh yeah she doesn't, hold back at it's it's it's fine and that's why it's called guy told, my I told my daughter You know.
