"News. Everything you need every time you listen. The WTOP producers desk is wired by IBEW Local 26 where contractors come to grow. Good Afternoon, I'm Mark Lewis. Mike Ciekaitis is our producer. The top story we're following this hour, the turmoil on Capitol Hill over who might become the next House Speaker. There's now a new Republican candidate for the Speaker's gavel. Georgia Congressman Austin Ott will go up against Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, who's trying once again for the Speakership. The latest now from WTOP's Mitchell Miller today on the Hill. Congressman Scott is a conservative who's on the Intelligence Committee and not nearly as well known as Jim Jordan, the chair of the House Judiciary Committee. The race for the Speakership has started over after Majority Leader Steve Scalise decided to drop out. This House of Representatives needs a speaker and we need to open up the House again. There's growing frustration over the paralysis in the House, which means lawmakers can't act on issues related to the war between Israel and Hamas, even if another candidate is nominated today, there's no guarantee he'll be able to get the 217 votes needed on the House floor. On Capitol Hill, Mitchell Miller, WTOB News. You can read more our of speaker coverage at the Today on the Hill blog at CBS News special report. President Biden met virtually today with the families of 14 Americans missing in the Middle East, says CBS's Weijia Zhang. This sends a very clear message about how it important is to bring these hostages home. And in the past, that hasn't happened because that could change the state of play. Israel is reportedly preparing for a ground invasion of Gaza, CBS something News military consultant Jeff McCausland says will not be easy. What the Israeli people are going through right now, we don't want ever to happen by any means or measure here in the United States. For CBS News Special Report, I'm Christopher Cruz. column is being urged around the world as israel is likely to be in the ground offensive inside gaza as we reported Hamas has called for a day of rage today. Earlier today, someone in France committed a knife attack at a school and authorities there believe it's directly connected to the Israeli mass attack. That's a part of the reason why we're seeing stepped up police patrols and law enforcement vigilance here in the US because there has been quite a bit of chatter on social media and in other venues where people are talking about showing their rage and showing their anger for either side so parts of security correspondent JJ Green. Maryland US Senator Ben Cardin plans to introduce a bipartisan resolution supporting Israel when the Senate returns next week. He calls the Hamas attack on Israel brazen acts of terrorism against civilians. He said the attack must be met with a united response that strongly underscores America's unwavering support for the people of Israel. That Senate measure expected to pass in the chamber by unanimous consent. The Jewish community continues to reel over that attack and an area rabbi offers a message of unity, clarity and peace. Rabbi Aaron Miller of the Washington Hebrew congregation says the world needs to unify against hate and he's praying for clarity for how to handle the situation. He also hopes to offer people hope. And also we're going to pray for a lasting peace, not a short term peace, but a peace that can can maintain for for Israel and our Palestinian neighbors for generations to come. Miller says a lot of Jewish people feel lonely right now. He says to see happening this in Israel, it feels like it's happening to family. Kyle Cooper, WTOP News. In other news, the White House says North Korea has delivered more than a thousand containers of military equipment and munitions to Russia for its ongoing war in Ukraine. Speculation about a possible North Korean plan to help Moscow flared last month when North Korean leader Kim Jong -un traveled to Russia to to meet President Vladimir Putin and visit key military sites. And on Capitol Hill, enhanced security measures are in place as well. In Virginia, one leader is calling for more security at schools. In a letter to Virginia's public universities, Attorney General Jason Miyares wants them to take additional safety measures and have safety plans in place ahead of the potential demonstrations. The Richmond Times -Dispatch quotes Miyares saying he has deep concern for the rhetoric of some student groups that are sympathetic to Saturday's terrorist attacks in Israel. UVA's president says the school has a long -standing tradition of not just allowing free speech but promoting civil discourse even when people disagree. Miyares says the right to freedom of speech does not include violent acts against people and property, and those who commit crimes as part of demonstrations are subject to arrest and prosecution. At least not until you hear this next story. Buying new appliances can really cost you a pretty penny. How about a brand new refrigerator for 2000 bucks? A lot of homeowners these days when an appliance goes on the fritz just spring for a new one. They just assume that oh you know this thing's broken. But that's not always the case says Kevin Brasler with Washington Consumer's Checkbook. He will tell you fixing an could appliance save you money in the long run. Usually most homeowners were happy with what we have. It works well for us. We're happy with the features and most importantly if the unit's been reliable already for five to eight years or more there's no reason to think that it won't continue to work reliably for many more years to come. But if your appliance needs a major repair, then it may be time to replace it. Sandra Jones, WTOP News. There are still some cancer drugs that are in short supply right now and in some cases that is forcing doctors to make some difficult decisions. Say things have gotten a little better. But Dr. John Deacon with the Inova -Shark Cancer Institute warns that while shortages of some drugs used to treat GI and head and neck cancers are getting better, new ones are emerging. A drug called vinblastine, which is central to testicular to lymphoma patients, malignant blood cancers have become in short supply. It's the result of what Deacon describes as labor shortages, manufacturing quality problems and one manufacturer filing for bankruptcy. There weren't many major tumor types that were spared from being impacted by these shortages. The differences for patients are significant. Sometimes we have to use alternative agents that might have more side effects. Scott in WTOP News. Stick around here on WTOP. "Morning, I'm John Aaron. And I'm Michelle Bash. New this morning, there is a large police presence at Montgomery Blair High School after receiving, apparently, a bomb threat. Now police are telling WTOP they're investigating the validity of the threat. They've closed all entrances to the school on University Boulevard in Silver Spring. A parent forwarded an email from the school's principal to WTOP suggesting a bomb threat was made And not to come inside. No one is hurt. Students have been moved to the stands of the school's football stadium for now. It's not clear how long that school will be on lockdown. Of course, we'll continue to follow the situation and bring you updates as we get them. This comes as police in our region are boosting security after a former Hamas leader called for a worldwide day of rage today. DC and Montgomery County police say they have increased their presence around religious institutions On Capitol Hill enhanced security measures are in place as well. Meantime, with the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, Virginia's top prosecutor is urging more safety precautions. Attorney General Jason Miyares sent a letter to Virginia's public universities. It urges them to take security measures and have safety plans place in for demonstrations. The Richmond Times -Dispatch quotes Miyares saying he has deep concerns for the rhetoric of some student groups sympathetic to Saturday's terrorist attacks in Israel. UVA's president says the school not only allows free speech but promotes civil force. Even when people disagree, Miyares says the right to free speech does not include violent acts against people and property, and those who commit crimes during demonstrations are subject to arrest. Neill Augenstein, WTLP News. As many people try to deal with their emotions regarding the war in the Middle East, a local rabbi is offering a message of unity, clarity and peace. Rabbi Aaron Miller of the Washington Hebrew Congregation says the world needs to unify against hate and he's praying for clarity for how to handle the situation. He also hopes to offer people hope. And also we're going to pray for peace, a lasting not a short term peace but a peace that can be maintained for our Palestinian neighbors for generations to come. Miller says a lot of Jewish people feel lonely right now. He says to see this happening in Israel it feels like it's happening to family. Kyle Cooper, WTLP News. At a Capitol Hill hearing into why violent crime has increased in DC, a view. Crime stats year to date in the district are absolutely staggering. Greg Pemberton, a detective with the DC police and of head the police union, spoke to Congress during a hearing of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and federal government surveillance. He said they have lost 605 union members since 2020. He many says of the officers left because of the DC council's recent policies on police reform. The direct result was a mass exodus of police officers from the department. Congress heard questions from victims, Congress members and experts in the field on Thursday as they addressed the rising crime statistics. These dangerously low police officer staffing levels take away valuable resources from our assignments like detectives and investigative personnel. Valerie Bonk, WTOP News. And we have reached out to members of the DC council for comment. Hospitals have been dealing with a shortage of some cancer drugs for months. So, what's the situation now? Things are easing up a little bit. Dr. John Deacon is president of the Inova -Shahr Cancer Institute. The shortages of some critical cancer drugs are getting better, he says, but Benblastin, which is used to treat some blood short supply. The shortage, according to Deacon, is the result of one manufacturer filing for bankruptcy coupled with labor shortages in supply costs. And there are consequences for patients. We had to prioritize for a brief period patients who were undergoing curative cancer treatment versus those that were undergoing treatment to help prolong their life but were not curative. But doctors are always prepared. We have a plan B or plan C that most of the times are equally effective but they might have more side effects. Scott Gellman, WTOP News. October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and there's a new exhibit at Planet Word, the DC Museum known for its interactive exhibit about language. The installation called Inside Look Dyslexia aims to demythologize the disability according to the National Institutes of Health about one in five people in the US have dyslexia.
