Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson suspended seven games by NHL for hit on Boston Bruins' Brandon Carlo
"Elliot seven game suspension for tom wilson. I don't wanna go over. They can prejudice a jury here. I don't want to go over the usual arguments here about did he. Didn't he intention all that kind of stuff. That always gets itself played out hysterically on twitter and we saw that fire tonight and over the weekend and no these conversations going to happen. But what are some of the questions that you had going into the tom wilson hearing and are you surprised that he had one in the first place and does any part of a seven game suspension. Surprise you you know. I think the most interesting thing i've found is that you know there are a lot of people who believed that. He only got suspended. Because he's tom wilson And that if it was just about any other player in the nhl who delivered that hit. We wouldn't be talking about anything here. And i think the capitals believe that. I mean you heard peter laviolette save. I saw the the hit. I mean his feet round the ice. He stayed down with everything. Looks like a hard hit in the corner of not not exactly sure what happened but to me. It looked like just a hit. You heard ovechkin call it a joke And one of the things we talked about on. Fridays podcast was. How frederick drove the capitals crazy on the wednesday night game the night to game two nights earlier when he was all over ovechkin than ovechkin spirit him and you were the one who asked okay. How was he allowed to do this. And then two days later they play again and on the shift with carlo. Wilson tries to engage frederick a couple of times. And frederick's noah got a constant winning a game here and he runs over carlo you know. Maybe he was frustrated. I don't know i i. I don't know how wilson would explain it but you know. Saturday is a day. I make a of my phone calls and i asked around legalized and people are just generic conversation. It came up. What do you think about wilson how bad you think he's gonna get it and i did have a lot of people say to me if this was anyone other than number forty three on the capital's nobody would even be talking about this. Nobody would be if it was a hit that anyone else delivered. It wouldn't be a penalty or suspension. A lot of people felt them. But that's what happens when you have the history right. All of a sudden people look at you differently. You don't get the benefit of the doubt name Four hundred other players in the league if they throw that hit they get nothing but because of his history. That's what happened in this case. Like i really believe probably looked at elliot. Moore's while that was a tough hit with a bad outcome. But because his tom. But but i think generally predisposed to assume the worst when it comes to tom wilson but that's a reputation that earned so on friday night. He throws the hit because there was head contact. The first thing everybody looks at is rule forty eight yep illegal check to the head and is the head the main point of contact and the answer there is no this is my guess. My guess is that the people in the nhl department of players safety said this is not a rule forty eight and then when they started thinking about it they looked at it and they're like we don't like this. Is there anything else it is and if you read rule forty one which is boarding. You know it's there you can make that argument. And i think that's exactly what happened. Is they made that argument. And they said that's boarding. Now it's new president's you know that's not the way boarding tends to get called boarding tends to get called when a guy has hit from behind and carl wasn't hit from behind i think that's one of the things that the capitals and possibly the players association discussed wise. You guys don't call boarding like this and at the end of the day that's why it wasn't also like thirty or forty games because boarding doesn't carry those kinds of suspensions historically the highest boarding penalty i could find. I suspension was zac. Rinaldo in two thousand fifteen. It was eight games. Right and wilson gets seven. So i think that's why he got less. You know the other thing. Is you know the capitals argued. It was a clean hit like some other people had said to me and the league just felt the totality of it all was illegal.
Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson Receives 7 Game Suspension After Hitting Boston Bruins' Brandon Carlo
"Tom wilson's added again. The washington capitals rugged. Ford i was gonna call him tough guy but that was very tough thing. He did there recently against the boston. Bruins tom wilson has now been suspended for seven games for a hit against the boards on boston's brandon carlo. And it was well ugly in every way hit can be ugly. It was basically carlo up against the boards. Got the pocket and his skates. And wilson comes up and pretty much collides with the side of the guy's head and he left the game due to injury and It was just and it's not one of those deals where he can sort of. Give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Tom wilson continually runs into trouble with the nhl law and I mean these seven game. Suspensions four-game game suspensions the they just don't seem to be getting through to this guy. Now what did you think of him. There's no doubt in my mind that that he's lining up the guy's head okay whether shoulder right. That's the big hit right. That's the big hit when you when you leave the ice. Hers people incorrectly. See all the time. He left his feet. You know when he when he's leaving the isis the guys up against the boards. I think he's not even looking at him. Got his head down and this guy sort of lays into them with a shoulder to connect with his head. Okay so that's that's a terrible brutal disgusting dirty hidden hockey. Triple that stevie. When you're looking at the guys had up against the glass and you're gonna go smashing. You know like the guy the guys up the guys up against the boards and there's his his face might even be against the glass when he does it steve. It's just freaking heinous man idea. I thought i. That's what i thought when i looked out said that's like punching a guy down steve that's like punching a guy when his heads on the ice and you know as heads on the ice right. They don't do it right. You seldom see that right. The guy will pull up. What was the example. Last week was a beautiful example. The guy waving the linesmen and because he was going to use going to murder the kitty was fighting right. Yeah but this guy. I think he. He saw it from a mile away in terms of hockey speed. You know like you have a good two seconds there and tried to smash his head like a pumpkin into the glass. That's what i that's what i saw. Elsie the same. I mean and it's and it's this guy it's one of those deals where maybe i'm throwing around benefit of doubt of. It's somebody who's never done something like this before because it is a fast game and guys move the last second but there's nothing i can find here where i i can even begin to go down that road. A it's is tom wilson. You know if there's been a murder and there's a serial killer hanging around the scene of the crime. I'm gonna probably look his way and not given benefit of the doubt It's tom wilson and brandon. Carlo is totally stationary up against the boards. There was one today it was. Let's see. I think it was chicago in saint. Louis i wanna say and There was a big hit Behind the net and I mean it was one where he could look at and say okay. Well that's second go either way but this one was just. This is a guy. Carlos stationary against the boards. He didn't change direction. Didn't spin at the last second. He's totally still. And this guy had really his choice of where he wanted to hit him and He clearly chose get the the good. Maybe do the most damage knock this guy goofy. Get the puck and off. I go and intimidating. That's tom wilson's game. And so it's that's that's the frustrating part of it but more than that though it's hard for me to get to work out a budget anymore. Because the nhl at large doesn't seem to care that much y'all through a seven game suspension. Well this guy's been suspended repeatedly in the league and It doesn't seem to change anything for him and they don't ever seem to want to do something more fierce with this

"In the guys veteran. It's got the biggest reach longest reach in the league, but he hung in there. But that's just the postscript because this island or team had just thirteen shots on goal including getting out Sean the first period fourteen to to they lost fill for the next four weeks. Everley is day to day. Islanders look tired. They looked banged up. And we talked how important it would be more important for the islanders than the capitals to win the metropolitan division. Not that either of them have to do it as long as you finish those top three avoid having to play Tampa until the conference final all that could be accomplished as the second place teams the third place team. You don't wanna fall the third and have home ice disadvantage right away. But if the Allender finishing second place not that big of a deal, not awful. You don't even know who you're gonna play in the first round could be Pittsburgh could be Carolina could be Columbus Hudek knows whatever you get you get but winning the division for the islanders. I think psychologically be good because they've had it for good portion of the second half of the season. It would be such tremendous story had they gotten there more. So than for the capitals could probably make a run, you know, whether the first place team at the second place team early probably would matter, you know. But right now, the Allders just look like they're a little sluggish, and they certainly showed last night mustering just the thirteen shots on goal losing five nothing, and they lose a whole the first place because the caps beat the. Devils final. There was four to one. That's the game. You gotta get the devils are one of those teams that when you play them you should be able to beat them and they did. And they got right out of the box. Quickly score to fifty two into the game. Boura ski gets his twelve of the season. Devils tight late and a goal with one second left in the period by St. no. And that's the last. They were heard from Conley coups. Nets off Wilson all getting goals for the Washington Capitals. And they just continue to move forward here. And now first place in the metropolitan division. Maybe the game in the night to me was the penguins and the hurricanes in Carolina. And this is just been a tremendous tremendous story has we've talked about. But this looks like it wasn't going to be there night. Right. Because they get the early lead give it up fall behind on tangle gorgeous breakaway by Tang. It's great feed from Russ Gansel involved as well. But then Justin Williams scores listed two minutes to play to force overtime. Right. We'll get a point. Maybe they can steal the next. Point which they end up doing in the shootout Dougie Hamilton gets the only goal in the shootout. So they draw a point closer to that third place. Spot, you know, avoid having to to settle for the wild card of Carolina can get in that top three. They'd be in pretty good shape. And also try to distance themselves from the other teams falling out of the playoffs. So right now Carolina as we speak to points back a Pittsburgh for third place with still two games in hand. And they also have a gain a hand on the islanders and their four points back of them. So Carolina's in good shape. Carolina also extends their lead to three points over Columbus. Who lost a Calgary last night for the second? Wildcard thus avoiding having the play Tampa and Montreal who picked up a win in Philadelphia their point out of the playoff spots. But now four point separates Carolina from completely falling out of the playoffs. And again, they have a game in hand on Montreal game in hand on Columbus game in hand on Philadelphia's Carolina's in great shape. So that was a huge win for them specially trailing with tomb. Hits to go in the game to be able to win. And again, what creativity at the end of the game. Sorry, Don cherry, but they're really came up with a good one where they played duck on on the big screen in Raleigh..

Some lost confidence Colin doesn't seem to be that guy, California. Cool. But you know, he cares. A lot too. You can tell that with Corey Crawford closer to returning going. Be interesting to see how he responds tonight tribe because he doesn't wear every one of those nine goals, but still a little more unstable than we've been used to seeing him up here. You've got to have a bigger piece of the pie to kind of look at. Colin came up. He was spectacular. And the teams were still struggling defensively. The goaltending been great all season long, basically. But there's going to be a time where every goaltender go to a little bit of a rough cats, but I agree with you. When you see Collins, you don't sense any lack of confidence. You don't see anything pretty competent guys. You know, he knows that if he just continues to preparation the same way and stays with it stays focused and don't let anything distract him that that he's gonna be okay in the long run as you know, he's got the size. He's got the ability to be great Gulf center, but goal setting in a lot of ways. It's it's as much as is technical and for for calling. You know, what he's going to go through a couple of years downtimes, and it's just it's up to him to respond and rebounding the team's gotta play better in front of their goaltenders. I mean, you feel sorry for him in that game against Ottawa. You kind of felt sorry for what was going on that third period. Against the Detroit Red Wings as well. Just way too many quality opportunities. You gotta give your goaltenders a little bit of a help back there. For deal. You has got to come back in there. And he's got to prove his worth again. And everybody kinda looks at it and say, okay, which one is the real call Delia. I think he's going to have a strong game here tonight as for the ads they're tied with the hawks at sixty one point but with a game and add lending. Even more words to this one for the hawks. But there are two more meetings with Colorado next month. Jared Bednarz team recently went through an eight game losing streak but his bounced back by winning three of the last four and just when it seemed they were going to sink into oblivion after what was a marvelous. I two months they've outscored their last two opponents Vegas in Winnipeg by ten to one and they've done it by breaking up. What was a lethal line? That really was the story of the NHL through the first month six weeks, even those two months of the season. Gabriel dog is on one line. Nathan MacKinnon is on. Another third line is Michel Renton. Louis a lot. You know, you you need to do changes. And I think that was a that was the one change, you know, we all play in different lines. And I think it's helping helping all three lines were we are our Fordline soon. Great job too. So I think it's it's been good for our, you know, we we won't once again in a row with lead Mongolian. So. Now, and it's a small sample size. But they have done very well being split up with the first two games. We've seen coaches just try and mix and match especially when a team goes through some bad patches trying to find anything that works. A matter of fact, we've seen Jeremy do it here during the course of his time with the Blackhawks I think maybe the more important story line. Here is the way that their goaltender has really played. Well, too late semi Varlamov has given up just four goals over his last four games, and he has a pretty impressive record against the Blackhawks throughout his career to seven games over the five hundred Mark for Varlamov, and he has been playing. Well, there was a lot of questions with him in the last couple of seasons some injuries whether he was really going to be the guy that can get the job done. So they went out and got Philip group. Our from the Washington Capitals. Great goaltender, but he's not playing as much as late. You look at the numbers and look at Parlama for the way that he has played here. The last little while this'll be as ninth straight. He'll start here tonight for the Colorado Avalanche. All the kind of ride the hot handwriting now under the head coach Derek Jeter, you really don't have an opportunity to to kind of figure out which is going to be your best goaltender if your best goaltenders playing the way Varlamov is he's going to be guy taken the net. And by the way, their power play has really some of the numbers are amazingly similar between these two teams the Blackhawks in Atlanta, you have the exact same season-long power play percentage. But the ads went one for six on the power play Wednesday that snapped in over twenty six drought over the previous nine games. Both teams struggled on the penalty kill as well being in the bottom five or six, oh, we know the Blackhawks up the rear of the NHL on that and goals per game. The Blackhawks seventh averaging three point three four the avalanche night at three point two seven really some similar numbers between these two teams coming into that for one thing. The they'll look at here when you look at those special teams number, and I saw them on the same kind of light. If you look at all the teams in the NHL, and that's why it seems like at the end of a game the power plays. They're pretty equal to the minor penalties. You take. They end up being pretty much the same. You look at the overall numbers for the Avs. And the Blackhawks the ads have had thirty six more power play opportunities. But they've also killed thirty more than thirty four more penalties on their site. But the numbers are eerily the same. It's the percentages the percentages are they're same. But it just goes to show. The Blackhawks have had one hundred eighty three power play opportunities the apps that had to nineteen they've killed up to fifteen. The Blackhawks have been short handed one eighty three. So there's a two minor penalty discrepancy in that there's a four minor penalty discrepancy on the app. Did they tell me that the end of the night the referees? Don't know that you got four power plays. And he got killed three minor penalties. If you look at all of them. They're always basically unless there's one team that's off the church way. More opportunities, however, many power, please you get those the number of penalty kills you're gonna get as well. And. Colorado averages the most minutes per game at ten point three. So that's another thing to watch your. Hey, real quick. Did you get a chance to check out Margarita Bill? Yes. I went down south boat, drunks and a review. It was good. I actually tweeted out a little video down, Mr.. So.

"So why not? So this team is very similar to the Washington Capitals in hockey. The Washington Capitals. Last two years have won the presidents trophy, Dave Alexandrov action who is one of the greatest goal scorers. If not the greatest goal score of all time in the NHL they never got past the second round with Lovie being there. Ten plus years never did it. They lost the penguins last two years. They've been up three one. They've been up in elimination games. They've choked every single time. Last year they had no pressure. They didn't win the presidents trophy. They weren't the favourite. They weren't even the running up favorite. They granted through the playoffs. They got past the second round. They won the Stanley Cup and five games. This dodgers seems is very similar for that to that for me, no expectations this year after all their injuries. They won their division, but not by much, not even the, not even close to the best division baseball more. The fourth best division baseball because the AL completely better than in the central is better than the west with east being the weakest, the NFL, but they have experience. They have Walker bueller pitching out of his mind, Kurt Clayton Kershaw, it's Clayton Kershaw if kenley Jansen can come around to his normal self. Again, it's one of the best closest in the game, if not the best closer in the game, and they have a scary, very scary line of one through nine, which is I think better than the brewers one through nine. But they have to prove it at this point. Right. And if you think about it right. They are. Where did it? My train of thought, go man. It's the worst. I, I literally had it and then somebody text me look down on my phone. I was like shit blown. It. I don't fucking that. You say something. I just said the for a while, just take a second. I just talked with two minutes..

"And then by the trade deadline they may decide okay we're not gonna resign roll up and put them on the market then and so that might be a time that someone could acquire a lot but you know i do think based on conversations i have with them and you know again things change but i get the sense that's their plan is to go into the year with those two guys is their goaltenders and see where they're at so it'll be interesting to where the islanders go for their goaltender and certainly many people thought the group our would make sense and that was a nice trade by colorado in washington before we even got the draft started tom says do it gone just quit the other side too i think too is that look look for the for the possibility of bookstore pick resigning on a lower on a smaller deal with the washington capitals because now that the colo that the colorado avalanch are the ones with or pick and the ones that are going to buy out the washington capitals are now in play to we sign it and i think that was part of this is that you know they like brooks or picked aries got a good relationship with todd ridden and would like there's going to be the head coach of the team next year but they couldn't afford that tap it by trading his contract and having the avalanche by the contract out they can now if you had bought it out they would not be able to resign him that cba rule but the fact that the avalanche of now got the contract and they are going to buy him out he'll be a free agent and perhaps he comes back in place it's the washington capitals tom says the deena was called by craig button and nhl ready talent yet to centers and could shook we're taking a head of him who might need more time we'll the hab sends in iota regret passing on him the potential value debate continues yeah i mean i guess time will tell right i mean we go through the drafts from other years right and go through this guys was you know he was overlooked and then he got picked by somebody else and he played really well so the uniform what i saw them i can only go by you know i know i have a lot of respect for tra craig's opinion he's really sharp with these things and he's lived he's done it as a as they scouting director in dallas and gm and calgary but i my my thought on that i was really impressed with them at the world juniors for the czech republic reminded me in some ways impact wise of the impact that nico he sure had on this on this team the year before that so you know was really good i would say this you know my thinking on these things you don't build on the wing you build through the middle and on defense and you know teams that was the thinking for some of these teams i think the reason the senators went with ca choked overs edina is there in a very unique situation there i think they were looking for someone that could come in and be a overtime the character leader physical player for their team and i think that's why they went with brady could trip i think if they had been a different situation maybe they win win it in a different direction that said you know i if i was the detroit red wings who ended up with the i might pick quinn us because i think you you know i as i said earlier i like the.

"June eight and pf t your washington capitals are stanley cup champions i am a stanley cup champion i am personally assent no i'm not i mean tonight was one of those nights where i'm never gonna forget where i was i'm never gonna forget how it felt it was a feeling unlike i've ever felt in my entire life when you when you watch it seem like the capitals that has struggled over the years to get over like so many humps like a kate upton boob amount of humps it is it's all the more satisfying when you finally do something and i'll tell you what like the moment that veg can grab the cup and he just i'm going to back it up the moment he sprinted off the bench and just looked like he was nutting crying screaming laughing all at the same time that is life affirming i don't mean to get serious i'm getting too serious right now and it probably gonna listen back to this podcast in like a year and be like wow i was really hard but i'll tell you what it was awesome on it felt great and i i can't even a running out of additives describe it the only reason you're gonna feel like it was lame is because the couch probably gonna win again next year and you're we're used to this right the dynasty is already begun all i can do is hope that washington sports fans won't turn into phillies sports fans the way that phillies sports fans turned into boston sports fans you gotta eat soup i you know i don't so so it was actually a good idea to make me eat poop after the penguins when because i'll be honest with you after stanley cup why would i ever eat poop like we already won yeah sure i had to keep the mogo and so i kept the oh going and i regret nothing so the watching on tv we saw a couple moments you probably didn't get what you just described.

"I certainly pk sue ban is one of the great stars jerome again lou i'm on i'm talking about just casual hockey fans where you have this this brings up an interesting point because he's a black hockey player there are not that many many years ago many years ago before the what was the capital center was built bob johnson who owned at the time bt still owns be to he wanted to buy the the bullets and the capitals and i sat at a luncheon with him at the washington post and heard him say we're going to make the capital's black america's hockey team and everybody at the table when well this pretty good idea if you could do that and you do i think you do maybe this is just the crowd shot that television stations want to put on but it does seem to me that the washington capitals have attracted a mixed audience more so than a lot of cities do seems that way to me is that what you're suggesting michael i think what you're noticing the outside arena experience my personal experience from inside is that it's still the same very white worst tickets you buy your ticket you hold onto ticket so i think it's great that you're seeing that outside shot you still have a many barriers inside and you still have a lot of practices that happened in the arena that might make certain fans feel unwelcome but i do think that when you see these games and again it's about opening it up to the non season ticket holder i think these games do mean something washington dc is our most international city country obviously and so it stands to reason that washington dc if a team does well and people want to gather and attacks themselves team it's doing well the look of those people will reflect an international student more than most cities in this country which is a very healthy sign if indeed if indeed that i hadn't thought about a much i'm just thinking about the fact that i think they're going to win when i'm wondering what the parade is.

"They go thirty seven minutes without without a shot on goal which which would would destroy any team in in most games almost two periods of ice time without a shot on goal but yulo this is the penguins this has been there ammo throughout the whole season they haven't been a particularly dominating team in terms of puck possession they've been a very good shooting team they have a lotta stars obviously starting with sydney crosby an afghani malkin and they did this to the washington capitals through there was you know they were tons of pixel dedicated to how much the washington capitals were the better team they got better shot they add more of than they did more this more that but ultimately it comes down to the score and the penguins ended up winning five three in this the team that when you don't take the opportunity to get the win in these circumstances i'm not sure what circumstances you need to put the penguins away as can be very tough to beat them i think in his final you is this kind of like the most extreme version of sorts of the phenomenon that happens milan hockey teams which is when their head to go into the shell were they get out shot a lot and they just should've tried they they almost like play very differently from the style that got them the lead an and end up you know just bleeding all these shots on defense and not really getting my many back at the other end and also is that the right way to play shouldn't you play the way they got you the three nothing lead in the first place well we talk a little bit about the three nothing lead one with the owngoal but you're you're you're right when team get ahead they they tend to take less shot because they go into the defensive shell like you said they'll play sometimes up by the trapped i'll play though they still do a lot to prevent shots more than get shot in their own and you know you gotta give a little bit of credit to the predator they they threw a lotta puk that net who knows what would have happened if he gets you baticle was upheld head of ford berge skate on the right the line.
