In Measure Overhauling Energy Policy, Ohio Pivots Away From Green Energy

"This message comes from NPR sponsor. Comcast Business Gig fueled network solutions that help businesses go beyond the expected to do the extraordinary. Mary comcast business beyond fast. LEARN MORE AT COMCAST BUSINESS DOT COM working to support wind and solar has become almost standard in states nationwide. Some are even phasing out coal but not Ohio. It recently passed a law doubling down subsidies for power plants. Ohio public radio's Andy Challe reports the new law adds hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies for coal and while it does add twenty million dollars for existing solar farms it rolls rolls back renewable energy requirements and even scraps the energy efficiency program it also does out one hundred fifty million dollars in subsidies to keep open open to nuclear plants that had been scheduled to close opposition to the legislation formed some strange partnerships natural gas companies. The environmental advocates and conservative activists all fought on the same side against what they saw as unnecessary bail out for power plants. It's like this one. The kayaker creek coal plant which sits along the Ohio River workers were eager to talk about the critical cool role. It plays in the region. Chad Burton says for his family. It means everything. My grandfather actually worked here for thirty six years. You know it's put food on my table. Since nineteen fifties the new measure ensures that Kager creek stays open for at least the next six years but if you drive just thirty miles north to Athens workers at another company have their own stories to tell so when we get new contracts contracts. Are we WANNA make celebration here in the office. We will come up and we'll ring style. Roberto Washburn runs third son solar and says her company is proof. The APPALACHIA can be more than just coal. She's discouraged by Ohio's pivot away from Green Energy. Other states are positioning themselves for future while high of seems seems to be holding onto a dime part of the past. We need to create an environment for future generations and by using renewable energy. I really think it puts Ohio in exactly exactly the wrong direction. That's Democratic State Representative Casey Weinstein who argues that this drastic shift hurts both Ohio's fight against climate change inch and its future job creation hopes the new law sends a signal to businesses that we don't want wants you here. That's the impression that we are giving them but for Republican State Representative Bill Sites. The cost of continuing the green energy requirements especially the efficiency officiency mandates were too high sites argues that mandates like those are less effective than the subsidies he voted for. We have mandated in the past. The utilities must make their electricity with this particular kind of fuel. I think that's stupid. Sites Defense Coal as a measure to support grid diversity and reliability other supporters say saving nuclear would mean saving Ohio's largest source of non-carbon-emitting energy and some environmental advocates agree ratepayers will see reduce charges because of road back investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency but they'll see increase fees to support court those nuclear and coal subsidies the average monthly bill will end up dropping by about two dollars a month supporters of green energy policies call that shortsighted headed and a bad investment other states are deciding to put more money toward green energy and innovation but the debate in Ohio is not over yet. A citizen's group is trying to take their law directly to voters and put a referendum on next year's ballot. Their message is clear no bailouts for power plants for N._P._R. The business case for clean power

"Support for climate cast comes from Bank of America as one of the largest global financial institutions Bank of America is in a unique position to help society. Transition to a low-carbon economy Bank of America NA member FDIC, Minnesota fortune five hundred companies making a big commitment to wind power comic. Cast has the story. Here's MPR chief meteorologist, Paul hunter. Thanks, kathy. General mills started milling grain with water power from the Mississippi River one hundred fifty years ago. Now, the fortune five hundred company is using wind to power operations and to cut its carbon footprint, but what's the business incentive for going one hundred percent renewable power? Here's John church. The chief supply chain and global business solutions officer at general mills so for us. This is our actually our second wind power agreement this last one really covers about three quarters of our power. But in total we're going to offset a hundred percent of our domestic electricity usage. Across not only our headquarters, but all of our field operations or manufacturing plants as well. So one hundred percent of your electricity with your operations that general mills why would a fortune five hundred company go to one hundred percent renewable energy. What's the business incentive there? So increasingly our customers are consumers, and I think the general public is expecting industry and businesses to show up and make a difference. I know certainly our employees expect to work for an employer that is making a difference in that their work matters and this renewable energy stance that we've taken this offsetting of our electrical power needs with renewables is one of a number of things that we're doing as an organization in order to drop our total greenhouse gas emissions. We've taken a fairly aggressive stance. That said we're going to own the entirety of our impact. And by two thousand twenty five we're going to reduce that impact by twenty eight percent. Is this a bit of a full circle because didn't general mills start out using water power to mill grain on the Mississippi on time. One hundred fifty three years ago, we are founder CAD while they're Washburn sat on the banks of the Mississippi and said, you know, that water's pretty powerful, and maybe that can turn some gears for me and Milton flour. And so, Yep. It's a little bit of back to the future for us. Certainly the power grids a little more sophisticated than it was back in eighteen sixty six let's talk about climate change and your business operations can accompany like general mills see climate change in your supply chain for sure climate change for us is a risk to our inputs. If you look at capitalist sustainability our ability do business depends on our ability to take raw materials from the earth and continue to do that on an ongoing basis. And as we look at the science as we look at mitigating our risk. If we want to be around for another one hundred and fifty years and have consumers that are here to enjoy our products. We think that we need to do our part not only by offsetting our greenhouse gas footprint, but maybe more importantly, providing some leadership and allowing other people to convene and help us certainly generals can't make a difference in and of it's. Self. You know, I'm one of those thousands of Minnesota students who took the field trip to Betty Crocker kitchens back in the day, right and had some of those delicious brownies. So when we think about your products and the sources that are impacted by climate change. I mean, are we talking Cheerios? Are we talking cocoa for brownies? What kinds of products are you seeing impacts with you know, we're talking at all of our products, healthy soil and the ability of the climate to sustain it. The ability of the farms to be resilient all lead to a consistent. High-quality affordably priced raw material stream and as such consistent high quality products. And so it really is across all of our product lines. We source wheat from middle of Kansas, huge amount of our fruits and nuts and vegetables, come from California. We have oats, and and Canada, and then we're sourcing vanilla and cocoa from Africa, and all of these places are feeling different impacts of climate change having some predictability and resilience is really important to sustaining. Our supply John church chief supply chain and global business solutions officer at general mills thanks so much for your perspective to Dan climate cast. Thanks for having me, Paul. That's climate cast. I'm NPR chief meteorologist, Paul hunter.

"About the welfare of the masses it is about the egos of the elites and i'm just i'm just not something here i was brought up pretty much a liberal i mean i believed that the democrat party was wrong about abortion but i guess they're right about everything else because at inoni better and so so my brothers in the late eighties early nineties got involved in the prolife movement and they started saying things to me were crazy not about the prolife thing but when they told me that the government doesn't put people on welfare to help them but people puts people on on welfare to keep them down to keep them under the thumb i'm like that's crazy talk what are you talking about i'm like for real i just couldn't i just couldn't wrap my mind around it at first but after a while i figured it out number five statement that connie west is tweeting out that dr thomas sowell said today socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade socialism's record of failure oh yeah i mean it's fascinating how many kanye west has twenty eight million followers on twitter i wonder what some of them will think about what he is saying here no what i'm saying i wonder what some of them will think about what he is saying here because these are the kinds of statements that a lot of folks who are into kaanai west have never heard about they haven't accepted or rejected them because they're never heard of him it's like brody i'm talking about here by the way about thomas sowell among classical liberals libertarians and conservatives dr sowell is lauded as a giant brilliant one of the most prolific intellects of modern times a national treasurer someone worthy of a nobel prize at myers have cited dr thomas sowell as a commentator of great originality great depth and breadth clarity of expression thoroughness of research and marshalling of evidence and of lauded his propensity for uncovering surprising facts and statistics and upending conventional wisdom man him in let me let me just roll another one by you hear the kanye has not tweeted yet dr sowell check this out if there is not equality of outcomes among people born to the same parents and raised under the same roof why should equality of outcomes be expected or assumed when conditions are not nearly so comparable.
