UNC Student Journalists Share What It's Like To Cover Campus Reopening

"From NPR news. This is all things considered. I'm Mary Louise Kelly and I'm Ari Shapiro. Wildfires in Northern California have burned through several redwood forests, causing concern that the ancient giants and endangered wildlife could be lost. But scientists say there are reasons to be hopeful they'll survive as NPR's Lauren summer reports. 3 A.m. On Friday morning, biologist Kelly Sorenson was awake. He was nervously watching a live video feed of an endangered California condor chick sitting in its nest as the Dolan fire swept in tow, have to watch the fire burn right through that canyon. It was just just terrifying at a few months old, but she can't fly yet, and four other nests are in the path of the fires to none of those chicks in these nests can be rescued, nor can the parents do anything about it. They just have to hope to survive it. Sorenson is executive director of the Ventana Wildlife Society, which is trying to bring these massive birds back from the brink of extinction. They were just 27 left in 1987, thanks to captive breeding their 100 on California's central coast Now, so every condor accounts, even just four or five birds would be a huge loss. It's just really nerve wracking right now. It's not knowing. But Sorenson says he's hopeful they're alive because it happened before after a wildfire in 2008. She's such a horrific fire. And sure enough, this chick survived. We named it. Phoenix. It was protected by a redwood tree and redwoods are prepared for fire. They're going to look a little bit hammered, but almost likely make it. You know, they're pretty tough, Kristen Shy vis science director for the Save the Redwoods League. She says, Well, no one's been able to check the trees. Yet She's not too worried, especially about the giant trees hundreds of years old, they have bark that on an old growth tree can be up to a foot thick, which really insulate their living tissues from the heat of the fire. Even a redwood tree that's completely charred can still re sprout from its base. But some redwood forests have denser vegetation than they used to. Because for much of the last century, most wild fires were put out by firefighters. She says. Land managers need to use low grade fires in the winter to clear that out and reduced the fuel for extreme fires. I think we've just seen in this last week that this warmer and drier future is I mean it's already upon us, and it's going to continue, Tio Get worse. And so I'd like to see us. Think ahead about that resilience. Redwoods may be tough, but in a hotter climate, everything has its limits. "Well, it's, it's a good contract. Howard it's a great contract if he's the player was two years ago. What did you see this week? If he's if Carson is the player he wasn't 2017 then it's the great contract. I don't know yet. It's lyceum when the game start if he's going to be that player again. Well, what I what I've seen at camp is it looks like he's going to player. And again, it's, it's camp with no patents, but, you know, taking that out of the equation throwing the ball. Well. You know, regardless of Elliott's your parks ridiculous. That's in, in, in many camp mandatory, but many camp he's playing well. He looks I'll say I'll use the word frisky, because moving well feels great. There's no no need great. Yeah. I mean I heard those guys wanted this afternoon wear knee brace doesn't make any Sam Bradford Warney breaks and still tore up his another. He was made a class but regardless of that it's just that doesn't prevent it. And if it prevents him from being the quarterback that he can be. And I think he's going to I think he's going to have a great year. I think he's gonna regardless a you're just scared. Get a dog. I mean. JR being smart happens if he gets hurt you play the game of hypotheticals more than anybody. He's there's other guys in the station to play the game in the last five seasons. He's played thirty one of sixty eight potential games. He's missed thirty one of sixty a potential game with an ACL so that took a lot of games. I know. But I can't pretend he doesn't get hurt when you do. So to other quarterbacks get hurt but they still come back and not all of them. Get one hundred seven guaranteed to have Aaron Rodgers right now. Course okay. He's been hurt how many times but he is performance is predictable. I know what Aaron Rodgers is. None of us really know what Carson Wentz Carson. What we think we know. Okay. Well, no, I do know. Well, you think you're not educate. You. What is he? He's terrific quarterback that has another shot another shot. He should have won won MVP. He's got another shot at being the MVP. He could have could not. I mean, he should have great numbers in this off yet. And. I say that knowing Patrick Mahomes, you think is going to light it up. You should, you know, they have the alleged domestic abuser on the team so far. But I can't believe he's gonna play with them tyreek hill, which helped whole thing is dragging out either waiting for the courts to or the, the prosecutor make decision. The NFL's already got a pretty good idea. I'm sure a matter of fact, I know they do, but the reality is Patrick Mahomes now, sometimes after that kind of year doesn't have the same kind of your. So where are you going to question him? We know what he can do. And if he plays away did last year. He's going to be the MVP, but Carson Wentz will be right there. This team's offense. And he's got really good players around him. He's got really good players on offense. I do believe in a new you're gonna probably bring this up Zac, thinks that they're better. And when you think about that super Super Bowl team thinking about they lost five key players and still won the Super Bowl. I don't believe they're better than this team. That is to be proved do. But we don't know that. Until until they go out there and they have more talented team topped about offense. I do think they're more talented. Yes. Not defensively when what is it that they that they had defensively then if they don't have their defensive line was deeper that season? I mean, there they're have rely on Josh sweat, and Cherie Miller to give them snaps. They had very Miller's not going to be a factor, but sweat, sweat, a couple of players told me he's playing great. Now. We'll see what happens when they when they start and they believe obviously believe in them, because they, they didn't go and get more done, and let me amend the Chris long situation. I think Josh Swick plays away is. I think the only way Chris, the only way that Chris long will come back with an injury. Okay. Let's change. Thank you. Got somebody could sweat. Looks good. Yeah. And I think Chris is lost some weight you feels good about not coming to camp course he does. They start playing football but they know they know he's there, in case they need I I'm pretty sure they know that. All right. Eight hundred seventy nine nine four nine four pound for that's happen. Howard in for the hour comeback talk about what Zakar set to say. "News. I'm Rachel Martin in Washington DC, and I'm David Greene in Culver City, California. Good morning. So the actress Felicity Huffman, most famous for her role in desperate housewives is among a group of thirteen wealthy parents who've agreed to plead guilty to charges of fraud in the college admission scandal prosecutors are pushing for prison time for what court filings. Call a nationwide conspiracy that involve cheating on college entrance exams and also falsifying athletic achievements, to get students into universities. Now. Those parents may have let it coach who aided they're supposed fraud could potentially face jail time. NPR's listen, add Warney covers education, and she joins us this morning this morning. So what exactly does this mean for these parents who are who are pleading guilty here? So more than a dozen parents in one college coach have agreed to plead guilty. They were charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in connection with the scheme. So according to prosecutors those charges can carry a punishment of up to twenty years. Wow. But a parents cooperate with prosecutors. They're likely to get a much lighter sentence flippity huffman's plea agreement. Prosecutors recommended a prison sentence of the low end of the sentencing range, in other cases, they recommend twelve to eighteen months behind bars. Okay. But she could still be serving a year in prison potentially machine is she saying anything about this yet. So she released a statement with an apology saying she was quote ashamed and his quote, deep regret over what she's done. She also says her daughter knew nothing about her actions, and she apologized to students who quote work hard every day to get into college. So prosecutors talked about chiming they've church fifty people here. I mean, this is twenty at twenty five million dollar scam. They said what what about everyone else? Yeah. So so we're still kind of waiting to see her. There are some folks who are who appear to be fighting the charges glory Laughlin. The actress best known for full house. It's pretty amazing to kind of see the attention that this story has captured. So I've just been kind of wrapped as an education reporter. I'm sure. I mean, do you think it's deserve that kind of attention? Like does this feel like something momentous that could could really I mean, it's definitely brought up a big conversation about class and about the idea of college which in our country. We want to believe is a fair process. Right. Yeah. Exactly. It's interesting because you know, these schools. These highly selective schools, they just serve about one percent of all college students. So it's been really interesting to see how this is such a small group of students, but it's really captured of frustration with wealth and privilege, and what that means in terms of college access as we started reporting on this. I mean, everyone in higher education seemed to say like, yeah, it's a problem. We all knew that it was a problem for for so long, and nothing has really changed. The system changed the culture could could this be the moment. Reserve feeling in the field of education that that. I mean, it's just so entrenched that that it's going to be very hard to change the system. Well, I I have seen a lot of conversations about kind of what how do we get low income students get into college. It certainly renewed. A conversation or a legacy admissions. Which is the system that gives extra points to students whose parents are siblings attended a specific school, and there's also renewed interest in schools that don't require the college entrance exams like the tea or the SAT, though, the college board the company behind the SAT says using an outside assessment actually makes it harder to pull off rod. But even this idea of colleges nonprofit status like should they have this? If if they're not really an open access organization or serving the greater public. So these are kind of the things that I'm keeping an eye on. And we'll see what happens. All right, quite a story to follow NPR education. Reporter listen, thanks so much. Thanks. Okay. We're going to spend the next few minutes talking about household appliances. Not so much about how they can refrigerate your food or wash your clothes. But rather how they help us understand the current trade dispute between the US and China NPR's Alina sell UK explains home renovations. If you've done one, you know, it can be exasperatingly time consuming expensive and Janney musters doing more than a renovation. She's doing. Remodel bathrooms and a whole new kitchen. It really was daunting the whole experience. You know? I bought everything I bought a washer dryer refrigerator freezer, dishwasher, a range, and as she was going to show rooms for all these appliances. In January this stressful thing kept coming up the moment. Tie walked in everyone. Pretty much warned me that February first everything was going up as an going up in price. And because Musset was shopping on the higher end that could mean hundreds of dollars. Did they say why are they because of all of the terra the tariffs? They've been making a huge impact on the cost of appliances in the US take world, it's a leading American appliance maker in world prices. Barely changed for years says alr- Lacayo housing analysts G dot research. And when you look at what happened in twenty eighteen you saw a big pickup where and at first the price to can upward was pretty welcome news for world bull. It reflected whirlpools victory. Over its two main foreign competitors L, G and Samsung, they're both based in South Korea. And for years world argued that Sampson had been dumping appliances into the US market at below cost rendering competition irrational and last January, President Trump agreed with world. He said a new hefty tariff on imported washing machines selling washers to Americans became more expensive for foreign companies and domestic manufacturers like world bull could finally raise prices, but then Trump imposed more tariffs on metals like aluminum and steel which is critical to building almost any appliance. Suddenly a blinds makers everywhere including world, we'll begin complaining about the rising cost of raw materials, they had little choice, but to start hiking their own prices on certain products. You could be looking at fourteen to sixteen percent increase from last year to this year. Steve shine, cough owns Yale appliance and lighting and the. Boston area and has been in the industry his whole life. I'm the third generation owner guy. Yeah, we're here in Boston have been here for almost one hundred years. Now, it's hard to believe I haven't been here all hundred, but you know, about a third of that shine cough says many brands he works with like, Wisconsin based sub zero and wolf or German thermidor they regularly in their prices. But in the past year, the increases have been bigger than most no overall prices of major appliances tracked by the Labor Department are starting to take down month to month, but they are still higher than they wore last year when you talk about machine for people wanna buy front loaders and looking at two to four hundred dollar difference since last year shine, cough, predict prices are probably stabilized at this point at least for a while. But for shoppers who chase specials and deals. He says promotions have not been as good as a few years ago. He's noticed one other thing about Whirlpool's Korean competitors last year, both L G and Samsung fast-tracked to manufacture. During plans in America. It's great news for American jobs, but for world full, I think this is the biggest challenge will ever have and muster who's remodeling her house. She did manage to buy all her appliances before the February price jump. She later learned that saved her more than twelve hundred dollars. Alina.

Saudi Arabia Oman and Qatar skipping Khoat due to his personal reasons during a tour. Pound pale emphasize, the US confrontation with Iran. Try to reaffirm US presence in the rich. And despite the plan American troop withdrawal from Syria and endeavour to unite Arab countries plagued by internal conflicts Pompeii, also criticized the Middle East policy of President Obama at a policy speech in Cairo. It was here here in this city that another American stood before you he told you the radical Islamist terrorism does not stem from an ideology, he told you the nine eleven lead my country to abandon its ideals, particularly in the Middle East. He told you that the United States and the Muslim world needed quote, a new beginning and of quote. The results of these misjudgments have been dire-. Of course, the President Barack Obama made a white ranging policy in a same city ten years ago, promising a new beginning of relations with Arab world. I've come here to Cairo to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world. One based on mutual interest and mutual respect. America is not and never will be at war with his lung. We will however. Relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security. Because we reject the same thing that people of all faiths, reject the killing of innocent men, women and children, and it is my first duty as president to protect the American people. Meantime, during the tour palm peyot has confirmed the US we'll be withdrawing troops from Syria. But stressing a dozen mean will stop fighting Islam state group militants rich and there's no contradiction whatsoever. The president's been very clear in basketball, and I have been very clear about this to the threat from radical Islamic terrorism is real ISIS continues. We fight them in many regions of around the country our commitment to continuing to prevent dash growth. Isis growth is real. It's important. We will continue at that. We're going to do it in a way in one particular place Syria differently. So in this panel will discuss the Middle East policy of the US government and the general situation in the region. Please download our podcast world news analysis. So now, I talk about upon pales a speech in Cairo. Let's begin with Sharman. Now, Arne Shamin what did secretary of state Pompeo tried to tell his Arab allies. And how has his message being received? Well, we honest pump peyot lost me at America's the fourth for good in the Middle East that clearly not been the case in the last seventy years, and even prior to that I think he's go was to lay for, you know, the Trump administration's vision or relationships and alliances in the region and take a job at Obama's record in the Middle East in my view, Obama and Trump ultimate ambitions of the region are not much different Obama's narratives simply different than Pao's, you know, with pumping speaks as though Abbado's reluctant to wield influence in the region. And then help Yvonne's offended in the process. The opposite is true. Iran ascendant is due directly to us military adventures. Awesome. And stables Beijing the region from the Levant to the Persian Gulf in the last year. So, you know, Pompeo says when America retreats chaos often follows they're good arguments to show that's not the case. It is US troop presence and bass presents and economic presence in the region that has has royalty Middle East in in in conflict for the last decade, or so and his driving point, of course, is Iran and the Trump administration's focus on Iran, and you know, he has the idea that he Trump administration's can pull together a coalition of Arab countries to take on Iran, and probably in the course of our discussion today, we will see why that is in fact, not possible.

I just said it is terrific him and feeling are one in one eight this year one even the Julio Jones finally scored a touchdown ending national nightmare football players week twelve point. I. We've calling shortly. So I can't wait to ask. What he thought? Right obviously patriots Packers huge game. You know? I was made about the the goat contest, whatever which at that was a little lame. But the ratings are in for NBC sports, huge number last night. Best week nine overnight rating in the thirteen year history of NBC's Sunday night football, a fifteen point six best overnight primetime show on any network since March up sixty three percent from week nine the last year Sunday night seven time in eight weeks. It's football top the corresponding week of two thousand seven raising. And it's the last time I'll probably face each other unless they see. Which seems unlikely and it was great look. I mean, you see Tom Brady's Irv said it best brazen most decorated, and and Rogers is the most gifted he's incredibly gifted in terms of physical ability. But you know, Brady is playing this way at age forty one. Yeah, it's unreal. We will never see anybody like that again. And and the patriots did what they had to do. I mean, they are basically the team to beat in the AFC period. And I know that sir in front of him. But all you have to do is slip up once New England catches them. And they got to go to New England try and do it again in the playoffs. And we'll see what happens then. Yeah. You mentioned Tom Brady one note that I saw last night he was on the verge of not throwing touchdown pass until that long Gordon plane back to back weeks for the first time since December of six and then he did. And then he didn't then Gordon was wide open. And you didn't wanna put this as a statement win by the patriots. But surely, I think this is a pretty big win for them. It's a big win. But it's not a statement. Like, what's the statement? If you come into our house with your goat quarterback in a scheme. It's not nearly as advanced as ours. We're going to you know, I mean seriously their home. There's no statement. Well, I think patriots fans watched the Packers come into Los Angeles last week and nearly beat an undefeated team. So think pats fans were a little nervous. The Rams don't have trophy. Don't have trophies in the case. And the goat quarterback of all time. A little more talent than New England. I'm sorry. It's just the way it is. Not a statement win by the patriots. You know, it'll be a statement win by the patriots is beating the chiefs in the playoffs. That's their next statement. While this you could say, it's a statement win going into Pittsburgh. If the whip Pittsburgh is continuing to play that they're doing in week fifteen other than that. I don't see motor anymore statement wins on the New England Patriots schedule. We already know who they are. They're at their at their at Tennessee next week. Then they have a by then they're at the jets home from I guess home for Minnesota's at a statement for real there's at as at Pittsburgh. Oh, and then there's that week sixteen home games, they finish up with those two statement games against buffalo and the jets, please. That's. Schedule. That's why Kansas City can't slip up. They can't slip up. They gotta keep winning. All they gotta do all knowing do is catch him. You got one other item give me one other item. And we'll discuss the rest for the rest of the show. Chris. Okay. Wanna get to Steve Smith? Okay. Just wanna hit. Magic Johnson real quick. The reports of the meeting from whoa JR. And mcmanamon of admonishment of Luke Walton? We'll Magic Johnson did say yesterday that we will remain the Lakers coach barring something drastic happening. What's that? Like a large losing streak quote. We're not gonna fire him the meeting last week wasn't even a meeting about that. We just have to be better. And that was it. Yeah. I mean, they're probably still adjusting to life would LeBron. "Sports Josh Allen. Here's a little good news and context news. Josh Allen had the most passing yards for a bills rookie quarterback in his first start since Jim Kelly. There's not a lot of great guys to beat in there. But that's good news. One thing though, as we did this with tyrod and Jim Kelly and will probably end up doing it with Josh Allen Jim Kelly, he get into season with more passing yards, and we would have to say, well, the era matters quite a bit. And here's the next great example of the difference between football, then and football. Now, Joe DB ASI sneaky sneaky Joe sneaky, good stat sneaky good stat. He tweeted this out last night late last night. Ryan Fitzpatrick, are you sitting down and Ronnie driving? You should polo. Fitzpatrick has sixteen more passing touchdowns career then Troy Aikman. Stop right there that. Yeah. You understand? It's not that shocking. And he would have said, well, okay. He must a he's had more games. He's played had to retire. Littler? Skewed a little bit. Ryan Fitzpatrick is sixteen more passing touchdowns in his career than hall of Famer Troy Aikman in forty four less starts. Forty four fewer starts that's. No one would say fits better than Aikman Warney. But that that's that's your latest. Well, I guess the era was pretty different back. Then it's you know, the the game has changed so much. I I I would have told you if I didn't actually look at it myself on the internet that you were lying that you're making you look, you know, I did I actually called Chanel didn't believe the stat. I thought like me make it up my Rasmi, Darlene ice time stat I thought it was fake. So I went to pro football reference to double check it. It's legit. I mean, Ryan Fitzpatrick has a better. Touchdown interception ratio. He's plus forty four apron was plus twenty four in his career as a starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys so Fitz has got a better plus minus do so to speak. Never would have guessed that in a gazillion million trillion billion years pretty crazy. And why are they even having a discussion about whether they should come back with James you just play fits? Fits it fits turns into average guy than whatever you go back to James does not even question right now. Stay with him. He's in zone. You don't even think about going back to James Wednesday after the suspension what a what a silly idea. It's okay. Anything else? We miss anything. Do we leave anything out? We get who cares. If we got anything wrong. We don't correct errors. I don't care. Sabres are off from practice today. They're back in the ice tomorrow nine forty open to the public. Okay. So the L remind you again bills are practicing today. Sows at the stadium. Sean McDermott is going to the media about eleven twenty this morning. And if you want the latest on what's going on with the bills don't know how much we'll hear about maybe McCoy's ribs or anything else. Follow Sal on Twitter at sports. Okay. Instigators coming up next with their thoughts on last night's sabres game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. And we're back tomorrow morning at six have yourselves a marvelous day..
