Apple acquires the full Fraggle Rock collection in first major licensing play

"And here's another interesting apple acquisition if you will. Apparently apple is involved in a reboot of the once popular kids TV Staple Frugal Rock. That's been under development at apple for a while now to be released on Apple. Tv plus it's involving a full partnership with the Jim Henson Company and it makes sense as Netflix's and Disney plus have shown having kids programming is key to getting families to lock into your streaming service. But what is new and potentially interesting because it suggests a strategy shift on. Apple's part is the further news. That apple has also quietly acquired frugal rocks back catalogue. All Ninety six original episodes of the TV show aired between Nineteen Eighty. Three and nineteen eighty. Seven have been quietly made available to stream on Apple. Tv plus so is apple shifting its original strategy of creating original content into a mix strategy of also licensing existing Ip. If so might that be a tall order because I mean since everyone in their mother is investing in streaming plays right now. Why would anyone be willing to part with valuable? Ip that they could leverage to make their own efforts viable quoting the Great Julia Alexander in the verge as Joseph adhaline reported in vulture this week with big studios like Disney Warner media and NBC UNIVERSAL. Quote looking to keep their best and brightest titles for their own streaming platforms. There simply aren't enough great titles around to justify making a play for a traditional library of licensed content instead it makes more sense for apple to look at acquiring full libraries for shows wants to reboot keeping everything in one place makes for a better consumer experience quote so were apple to end up doing a deal for the rights to the James Bond Franchise something which has been buzzed about. Since at least two thousand seventeen the company would also likely try to get the back library of bond films so it could market itself as the home for all things 007 at Elaine wrote apple like all streaming players. Right now is making licensing bets where they make sense. Apple isn't about to try to use NETFLIX's licensing strategy which helped the general entertainment platform catapult into a behemoth for its own gain as apple figures out which properties make the most sense to either resurrects remake or reboot building out. Full collections is also a smart play. Apple isn't calling this a strategy shift but it is one apple. Tv plus launched without any license content and CEO. Tim Cook reiterated at a shareholders meeting in February that Apple. Tv plus wasn't about hosting older series or films specifically saying that's not what Apple TV pluses about cook. Restated that Apple. Tv plus is about original programming and quote. It doesn't feel right for apple to just go out and take a rerun. Cook said now. The caveat seems to be if that original program is based on an older series or movie. It's likely that collection will wind up on Apple.

"To in the past. It's not give us fifteen bucks. You'll get a whole new world of programming instead it's keep subscribing to the HBO now Streaming Service because we just gave it a face lift and made it a whole lot better. I'm Jefferson Graham. This is talking tech. Let me fill you in Max's. Hbo Plus Movies TV series and cartoons from the Warner Brothers Library. Classic Hollywood and Foreign Films From The T. C. M. Film Library original animation and more now. Hbo Now just got a whole lot better. And for me since I was already subscribing. I have more of a reason to keep it. I like the programming selection. You may like it too if you have an apple TV or google chrome cast streaming device in the house but if you're like most people and get your streaming the a Roku or Amazon fire TV streaming player while you're out of luck for now. At and T. Which owns Warner media? Didn't make a deal with either. So it's either fork over thirty five dollars for chrome cast a hundred and fifty dollars for the Apple. Tv device or watch. Max on one of the newer Sony or Samsung. Tv's here's what you're gonNA find. Hbo IS PROMOTING. Heavily the complete collection of friends and the Big Bang theory at the top of the front. Page the Harry Potter films and others from the Warner Brothers Library including man and wonder woman Max is broken up into several hubs. This includes looney tunes cartoons. Adult swim in the cartoon network. Hbo MTC 'em some hubs are better than others. T is fully featured with classics Galore. Like the wizard of Oz gone with the wind and I really love this. The Complete Charlie Chaplin Film Collection Cartoon Network has just a handful of series like the power puff girls and dexterous laboratory. But it's missing some key titles like Johnny Bravo and courage the cowardly dog unlike the recent Disney plus launch which had hundreds of vintage animation from the bolt along with four current titles. Max has many of the best of bugs bunny porky pig and gang including a duck amuck corny concerto in gorilla my dreams but a big emission at least on the first day is the greatest looney tunes cartoon ever made. What's Opera Doc the? Hbo Hub is basically HBO now with. Yes. Every episode of Game of thrones the Sopranos Kirby enthusiasm plus more. But if you're looking for something outside of those hubs navigation is tough for instance. Ex-Hulu CEO Jason Kilar named chief of WarnerMedia

"Warner media. At and T. The owner of Warner media made a big move hiring Jason Pilar. He had been the first head of Hulu he'd been gone from there for several years. Not doing anything of great notes since then but he was. He made quite a splash as head of Hulu and they have put him in charge of everything. I mean this is. He has never run a company of this magnitude. This is like a radical move. He's in charge of the. Hbo Streaming Service. He's in charge of CNN. He's in charge of the Warner Brothers Film and TV Studio Hbo. I mean this is quite an astonishing thing Hollywood is trying to figure out what to make of it. It's a bit of a controversial choice. Only because of his history Hulu now when he ran Hulu. It was the early days and it was owned by several different studios at once but he was known as kind of a gadfly and he published missives about the future of the business and he basically took down the linear streaming business in a memo that he famously wrote and predicted the future of on demand video which is largely. Come true but it was seen at the time as kind of an insubordinate thing to do and here he is now in charge of all of these media properties and reporting to John Stinky at. At and T. He was formerly Warner media. He's now been elevated to the president job at. At and T. and at and T. is not atypical. Hollywood companies so you could see both clashes developing upward at his company and downward with all these divisions at now. Report him yeah. There were clashes upward in the past. I mean he had owners like Fox and Disney which were separate companies. In the day you know this was early. Early Days Net flicks was establishing itself starting to and he would tell them. Basically your old school media my bosses and you don't know what you're doing and they ultimately did get rid of him but so he did look like he was right. In retrospect but when you look at a company like at and T. Up and down as you say I mean Bob Greene Blat is is supposed to be in charge of content for. Hbo Max and Hbo and all of that. You gotta wonder what he thinks of helping this guy. Suddenly being his boss and one of my sources said something in an admittedly. This is a one of their competitors. So you know. Take that into account but he said like why are they have to do this right now? Like this guy is supposed to start at the beginning of May. He can't even meet face to face with the people that he is the boss of and getting to know because he not a familiar guy to people in the old school. You know the Toby Emirates Runs Warner Film Studio. He's not a guy who has necessarily known in that kind of circle and he has. This person pointed out not only hasn't done anything this big but can't actually meet with his own people kind of striking. Yeah but I think that's kind of the point. They wanted someone who is GonNa come in here and have that streaming background because everything that. At and T. has done with the Warner Properties since they purchase them has been pointed towards the streaming future and HBO. Max is the biggest example of that. But they've also created a film studio at Warner Brothers specifically for streaming and they're looking at. How TAKE THOSE LINEAR? Tv brands like Turner TBS TNT and turn them into Digital Branson. I think that this is if you look at it closely. This is the perfect hire for that strategy because you have a digital streaming video pioneer. Who understands or at least has been familiar with the content business but is not of that business and I think that's the thinking. At and T. Yeah I mean it's an experiment and old school Hollywood which you can dismiss if you want to but has made content that people like to watch for a long time old school. Hollywood is like I'm not so sure and I say skeptical of everything that I am. I wonder what they saw that they were already quite top heavy and disorganized with management in terms of who is doing what at the streaming service and the film studio that set aside of service the streaming the whole thing just was kind of crazy confusing and you think you. I I kind of wonder well. What did you guys see? That made you feel like we have to do this. We have to do it right now. And time will tell. It is a kind of wild

Will new TV streamers HBO Max, Peacock, and Quibi meet their launch dates?

"Breakdown. I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown. Joining me remotely is Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter. Hello Matt Are There. So this is really. It's the Hollywood breakdown breakdown edition For for now a Lotta people are at home. Obviously as they should be as they should be. They are looking to stream things. We've talked a bit in the past about how it is that the studios don't WanNA put their really big budget movies on on demand because the finances the equations don't make sense. The streamers several are poised to come online and people have been asking. Why don't they go faster? Why DOESN'T HBO? Max Go faster? They're supposed to launch in. May they are asking you know the peacock which is the NBC universal offering. Why doesn't it go faster now? The and they were supposed to do a soft launch and then really go. I'd in July. The truth is they would love to go faster but in this environment things are going so crazy. I don't even know if this would have happened with or without corona virus. But they don't know if they even have the technology to support the onslaught to get everything ready so that is a big problem. That is if you want to know where it is. That's the answer. The question really is. Will they make the dates that they had set for themselves in the first place and everything I have heard is that they are you know scrambling everyone's working from home and the priority is to keep these launch dates? Hbo Max is the priority of at and T. and Warner media. They Really WanNa make that day. They've had to delay production on the friends reunion special which is going to be the big lure they have the friends library on. Hbo Max that is still on track. I'm told to be finished by the time that their launch date comes and with with peacock they now have no Olympics to promote the big plan for NBC Universal was to showcase peacock via the Olympics. And have some of the minor competitions on peacock but also a lot of the commentary and promoted heavily during the Olympics. That's gone they're really going to be relying now on the library content. They have the office and they have a bunch of originals and they have things that they can promote but without the Olympics. That's another challenge for them. A lot of Dick Wolf stuff and I'll note Jeff. Shell that chairman of NBC UNIVERSAL. Now the incoming chairman. Steve Burke retires has been diagnosed publicly with corona virus has said publicly that he is recovering so it just a part of the life. We're living right now. Is that kind of news. Meanwhile qube something. That Hollywood loves to talk about this. Is Jeffrey Katzenberg Meg? Whitman's big attempt to sell little short programming short videos. This is something. There was a lot of skepticism about in Hollywood. Even before this this epidemic. This pandemic will people. It's aimed at young people. Will they pay money to for this thing? Which I think. We're finding a lot of people despite their attempt to advertise it a lot and promoted still bunches of people out. There haven't heard of it and I don't know whether people will pay for Qube. Qube has certainly been paying for content. That's the interesting thing here. This is a two billion dollar venture. Most of that money is being spent on high end studio quality short form content which in Katzenberg's view has never been tried before. Yes there've been other things that have tried to get people to pay for short form content. Go Ninety was a big venture from Verizon Youtube at various premium. Tiers of trying to get people to pay hasn't really worked but Katzenberg says this is a different value proposition. Because this has stars this as people recognize creators that come from overall deals with the big studios all of that is included in Qube and it is tailor made for mobile which is where the audience is going especially young people so will people pay five dollars. Eight dollars without adds to watch this kind of content. We'll see April. Six is the launch date and they are zooming towards that they're not delaying based on the world state. And I think not even Katzenberg knows how this is going to play out. One of the many many unknowns. Thank you matt thank you.

Amid Coronavirus, Hollywood Takes a Hit

"I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter and Matt. There's a lot of anxiety. A lot of fear about the corona virus and people are being instructed as to what is best to do right now but obviously this is very contagious and while many businesses and the stock market overall are being very impacted clearly. Hollywood the entertainment business is is extremely vulnerable in this situation We've seen predictions that what has already happened. could cost the industry five billion dollars from diminished box. Office Revenue Alone I think that that almost as fanciful thing to say because this is a moving target every day every time you refresh your favorite news site hopefully reliable one. You See Different News and you know we've seen the Disney close temporarily a three theme parks overseas in Asia We've seen you know the bond movie now being moved off of its date in April. That is a movie of great importance to MGM which made it and is as releasing it in the US That company doesn't have other stuff that is critical to to its well-being it's bond and they've moved it now so far nobody else in the movie. Businesses followed suit but it just feels like things are moving in a direction. This completely unpredictable. And everybody's trying to figure out what to do. Yeah I mean I think this weekend will be a key indicator in the US. At least because if you look at what happened in South Korea last weekend box office revenue. There was down eighty percent year over year. And this weekend you have a big pixar movie onward from Disney. That is opening and the projections are that it's gonNA open pretty strong but those projections don't account for the fear anxiety that's out there and are people going to take their children to a movie theater. I don't know no one knows. Yeah let's look at Disney They would seem to me to be facing a lot of difficult questions I mean. They have hotels theme parks. Cruise ships end movie theaters. All of those are question marks right now in the. Us You have spring breaks coming up. You have Easter vacation coming up. I can't imagine what actually what the CON. What the consultations within Disney are like as to win the risks tip into a place where they think they should close these parks here in the US. Which would have a huge impact on their business. Of course or you know. What is the responsible move? Do they panic people? If they say we're now going to close these parks or is it the right. Move to say abundance of caution. Let's close the part. Yeah Disney is caught in a really difficult situation here and it's the first difficult situation for the new CEO. Bob Shape Pack. He's got this to deal with. And I've talked to people at Disney and they really feel that the power of the Disney brand and what they choose to do in. This situation is going to send a message worldwide. They closed the parks in the US that says to everybody that pays attention to Disney which is basically everybody that this is a huge problem and you need to be really afraid. I think the Disney is very sensitive to doing that so far. They haven't moved any of their movies. They have not closed the. Us Parks they seem to be adhering to what the CDC is saying. Which is that. They're not recommending that schools or big public gathering places close but a lot of entertainment industry organizations like everything from Warner media to net flix. They are preventing unnecessary travel. They're pulling out of film festivals and things like South by South West and I think that is the next step. We're going to the parks universal and Disney start to close. Obviously the important thing is to be common rational and hope for the best. Thank you

Bleacher Report's Sam Toles on building franchises that last

"We're going to do this. Live recording of the digital podcast and. I'm luckily joined by Sam. Tolls of as you know Sam as chief content officer at butcher point. Sam Thank you my pleasure. Thank you for having me okay. So Sam you've now been at bleacher for here about ten ten and a half months. What attracts you to the brand as I was thinking about leaving. Mgm The CEO Hired me. They're left under strange circumstances. And so when my contract was coming up started exploring options and you know really great job market especially if you're content person like there's tons and tons of opportunities and happened to get a call from recruiter and I knew report and the role seemed interesting but comparing it to sort of what I had done. And what my thought. My career trajectory was. I wasn't fully sold especially you know. Publishing world has been a little bit rocky and More I learned about the brand I met dave the founder. I met Howard our new. Ceo or not that was new at the time CEO and the team and every conversation. I had and every time I drove into and thought about this brand. It became an obsession of mine to actually start to work here at it. It it is something for me as I look at the media landscape embodies all the things that I think. Next generation media companies have to have engaged deep passion audience an audience that is predominantly under thirty five years of age seventy percent of our social audiences under the age of thirty five at scale but with that depth of engagement connected to have fully vertically integrated media enterprise so that you have no ceiling to the ambitions as you develop content. You can literally ladder it up into a division. Hbo or CNN. If the idea is good enough and big enough it has no ceiling as far as making an impact on audience and the nature of sports being unique in the sense that you know I think media now is all about tribal audience. People are self selecting. The difference between traditional linear media was the goal of collecting a wide. Morpheus audience of general consumers has now been replaced by this universe of social where anyone in this audience for anyone listening to this has their feed whether instagram or twitter or facebook and that feed is extremely personalized. You're very specific interests and passions. And you know sports is unique in the sense that not only. Is it deeply deeply tribal in the sense that people care very much about it but it also has the breadth of audience that gives it scale and so thinking about all those unique assets really really inspired me to move across the country and join biard as their CEO? So let's talk about the tribal element. I mean anyone who listens this. Podcast knows that. I'm Big Philadelphia Eagles Fan so I'm definitely part of this strange tribe And I do think sports are an interesting glue that that connects people in communities. How does that manifest itself in the brands that now makeup be are you saying the portfolio brands? Yeah so look the interesting thing is that we we started as a company in our founders premise. Was there's all of this information about sports. All these tribal audiences care about sports. But there's nothing connecting those things together and so through newsletters and alerts And ultimately our pivot in evolution into social. We've become really the experts I mean. If you're an eagles fan they know what your favorite players are. They know sort of your. What kind of kicks you like because of what you what you Engage in. It's very very much a part of you. And it's sort of expressed in the in the way our audience interfaces with with the platform and so on through that we've done more and more segmentation looking at the audience as a whole but the things that they're passionate about so out of that you see that we have specific verticals that deal sport by Sport Football being one of the most popular sports is no surprise very very exciting to our audience and so we have a dedicated gridiron channel that dives in To football specifically people love sports betting. And we've built recently A. B. R. Betting Channel that specifically talks about betting in the sports base and. I'm sure we'll talk a little bit more exciting area. Kicks is the same way and music. Kicks sneakers yes sorry for the for Layman's The nikes the Adidas new balance? Whatever shoe your favorite athlete whereas it's become an entire tribe into itself their entire sites dedicated to une boxing shoes and people that anxiously wait for Nike's newest announcement and that's very much related to sports because athletes are connected to their shoes and fans are connected they're athletes and it's a Or how to use interested in in how expansive the brand can be. 'cause you know going into two sneakers obviously yes. I mean athletes wear sneakers. But you're really talking about a different area. It's not sports. It's it's It's fashion you alter its culture but I'd so I'm wondering how far you you see being able to stretch the brand into these areas like I mean like the Serge Ibaka show. That's it's yes. He's an athlete. Fortunately played against the sixers last year. But you know that's a food show. Look I think the interesting thing about sports in general is that it should of the media verge. The media side of sports is an outcropping of news right like they grew up next to each other. So News and sports live desks commentators talking about the topical events because where it says live and happening in iterative and you have to have coverage and news in similar sense but if you think about sort of media and entertainment and how that has evolved you know the unscripted show of two thousand one would not work today because there's the the formulas and the and the ways that those shows have been developed by talented craters is constantly trying to catch up with audience. Audience Interests and passion. And so when you think about what that means for sports and sort of how sports has been done look I think. Espn's thirty for thirty is a terrific Docu series show but even today people talk about that as if it was the show but it was ten. Plus years old that series it was initially supposed to be thirty episodes. Hundred plus episodes later passed the thirty. And what I think hasn't been done or hasn't really been explored is the notion of how to tell stories around the world of sports in a different way. So like what's an example well think about our untold stories? Show right it's an interview show in its essence right. We're bringing football players that have really unique stories to tell and master to staffy. And who's our was a was a writer here and is now on camera. Talent is interviewing them about things that they haven't necessarily told the world but instead of just sitting down at a desk we go into an immersive kind of storytelling environment. We'VE LEANED INTO ANIMATION. Which is something that we are sort of became known for early with game zones and the champions and Gridiron Heights We've taken that kind of storytelling. To bring to life for our audience a story that was not filmed might have been very personal private about You know someone getting high before they went and got on the field and why they did that or you know the first big dinner that someone had you know with the the owner of the team and so we bring that storytelling to live through animation. And it's a different kind of flavor that resonates with our younger audience. It's a simple example battle stations which is our first pilot under. My leadership is in the gaming space. That was simply you know. Imagining the world of cribs as as it relates to people who are enthusiastic about gaming and connecting sports fans to the world of gaming. So you have Darren Fox and our host Censor getting together at his home. You see his home but more importantly you dive into his gaming setup you find out what he cares about what controller he uses. What monitors uses. What audio equipment uses. So if you're a nerd about gaming and you're a nerd in that space but you're also a sports fan who happens to love gaming and you're on our gaming channel you get to experience something kind of storytelling that you haven't seen in the sort of traditional straight down the line sports media landscape so it sounds like the kinds of storytelling. You're focused on is not sort of where biard began. I may began like as a collection of blogs text. Sure I mean text I think is an incredibly valuable part of what we do. It's a motive it's IP generating. As obviously the the world mourned today Kobe's death we incredible piece by Mirren Fater About G G their daughter and her contributions and what that looks like. And you know she was thirteen years old. That's very resonant with a lot of the audience that belongs on. Biard curious about you know the relationship that she had with her father and what that was like what you know what her experience was growing up in a basketball family and how she matured into the wonderful young woman that she became and the relationship she had with her father. It's very relevant to our audience and I think about the stories that we're leaning into now as vehicles to ladder up Additional Ip whether they become audio podcasts. Investigative Journalism pieces that we can then take to a narrative closed ended podcast series. Or if it's something that's a bigger broader story could that become a docu series because that becomes something you know that would live an HBO? Max and that new universal belong on CNN films and you're thinking Ip not like posts correct. I mean I think that all of this is about expanding and raising the ceiling of what we are can be you. You don't need that comes from the traditional media world traditional. I mean the the studio and platform world to continue. Just doing the expected. I mean we want and expect to move up the value chain and continue while doing that to keep connected with that audience that everybody in the In the traditional business really wants to reach that younger demographic so one of the other parts is is that is now part of Warner Media. So the ours. Big Warner media's gigantic. Finding you know. Where do you guys fit in within the gigantic? Battle Star. Look I think that It is I mean. At and T. R. Corporate Parent is the ninth largest company in the World. And it gives us again that enormous ceiling of opportunity that the way in which biard can grow is boundless and contents. I think one of the things that we have that is unique is an audience That really loves and engages with our brands whether there are portfolio brands or with VR national as a whole House of highlights and they love our flavor of storytelling. Peacock Emerges From Its Shell

"NBC Uni Comcast has released Peacock doc which is their competitor. We talk often about the streaming wars. The Competition Warner media has is coming online. Disney has come. Online and Netflix has been online Amazon Apple. It's it's a jungle out. There and Lil Peacock is going to walk out into the jungle and its debut in April. We learned this week. It's going to have multiple tiers this being a comcast product. If you're a comcast subscriber you are going to be able. We'll get peacock premium for free with ads. Or if you pay five bucks you're going to be able to get it ad free for those of us who don't subscribe to comcast's ask cable. There is peacock premium for ten dollars and peacock with ads for five dollars right. So if you don't have comcast or Cox doc I guess you can pay the ten dollars per month for access to fifteen thousand hours of live and on demand content or if you don't WanNa pay the ten bucks per month you can pay five per month and watch the stuff with ads. And there's a lot of stuff I mean if you look at the things they've announced you know. In addition to shows like the office and Dan you know movies that are going to be hoarded from the NBC library. They're doing a lot of originals. That are going to debut here. There's everything from things like Punky GI brewster sequel show two projects with Dick Wolf. And Amy Poehler Norman. Lear a lot of interesting stuff is going to be here on peacock. Yeah it's it's not quite the you know all the sort of meat and potatoes down there middle stuff. I think certain people were expecting for example. The Norman Lear project has is called clean slate at stars. Laverne Cox. She is the daughter of a old school car. Wash owner who is so happy that his estranged child is coming back to Alabama after many years but then it turns out that the estranged son is now an estranged daughter Played by the fantastic Laverne Laverne Cox so. That sounds very like Norman Lear and that is going to be one of the offerings. There's also something about called expecting about a young woman who is Sir no longer. Quite as young as she used to be and decides she wants to have a baby with her gay best friend so and and then there's something about the advent of twitter. I mean there's there's quite a mix if if you're a law and order fan you're you're going to end up wanting to get this and you can get a free version called peacock free but you won't get access you'll only get about half of the programming coming off offered on the premium version An you know a delay on the on the current NBC shows. So you won't get everything but you can get a version of this us for for free with ads. So that's their strategy. I know there's been some skepticism about it. I I I gotta think though that a lot of people who are sort of overwhelmed by all the a bigger numbers they're paying we'll look that's cheaper than Disney You know it's it's an inexpensive introductory price. At least yeah and this is part of the whole comcast a strategy. You mean they are hoping to get to thirty thirty five million subscribers in five years less than the ninety or so the Disney is looking for but but keep in mind that comcast is still very much in the cable business and they've approached this very much as a cable provider who is launching a supplementary service service for the people that are cord cutters and don't subscribe to comcast's but also for the people that do and there's going to be an advertising component that it is very big on this service unlike dizzy and unlike apple and unlike netflix. So they're going to have dual revenue streams here and they believe that each subscriber to this service will give them about ten will give them about seven dollars in revenue and that's a decent return. Yeah we'll see how it does I you know they're. They're also buying from all different suppliers instead of supplying everything themselves. So they're they're going their own way and we'll see how it works out. Thank you

"This message comes from NPR sponsor xfinity some things are slow like simple easy awesome more at xfinity dot com restrictions apply it is not about us I assure you so this joins almost a half dozen new high profile streaming great sitcom out of sticking a camera in your offices this is like a competitor Netflix or what well you know in a way I mean big outfits like Disney and Warner media built their own streaming platforms and apples joined in own and it offers original commercial free shows to draw consumers deeper into about us how does the pay that's called the morning show on his new service Emily Dickinson and The Best Apple TV pilot I've seen is this anthology it for the two point overs just give it some time Yeah okay so in less than two weeks November out there that are going to try to serve all most of your TV needs and it feels like Disney pluses that seven dollars a month for about seventy dollars a year I mean I think sometimes it's tough for critics like me Well can you give any advice about what to do here I mean we've all Amax this year from or this week for more media they're promising like ten thousand hours of content diary to see what you actually watch a be aware of what's out there they're streaming platforms when the season is over and and go somewhere else and the combined costs could easily be less than like you're getting a cut loose at an awesome library or mazing grocery store and just enjoy.

"Version of this with some extras or whatever is comparable to the one hundred eight dollar a month average cable able bill is just nonsense to may i this is this is way better. I foresee it being way better in the future for people who don't want to subscribe subscribe to certain types of things to be able to subscribe to what they want if you just want this and you're not interested in h._b._o. Max at eighteen dollars or twenty eighty dollars or whatever when it comes out don't subscribe to it. I mean this is. This is better than i think than it's ever been before. It's funny to me though because half of the people blur screaming out over bundling of cable type services half people screaming about too many options too many choices and there's too much good television out there being made like netflix net flicks isn't the only thing i need to have anymore. I need to now. Have you know to see everything my friends. We're talking about netflix hulu disney apple. I'm gonna have to have one hundred dollars worth of services a month. Is there a substantial difference in that. I mean i think social media's always mad about something. I think you're exactly right that we we've complained for years that we want all a car t._v. And now we're complaining that we have too many choices that this is all the court t._v. You know we've wanted if there are more choices coming. Certainly he no apple t._v. Plus is coming this fall. We don't know exactly how that's gonna prize. You know do you you get that for free. If you're already an apple music subscriber or apple news plus subscriber or is there going to be you know some fairly inexpensive price ice t to get you in the door to reflect the fact that there's not gonna be a whole lot in that catalog <hes> at the beginning then you've got <hes> h._b._o. Max is going to you. You know layer a lot of warner media former turner broadcasting channel <hes> content on top of h._b._o. And then in the spring <hes> <hes> <hes> n._b._c. is gonna launch. Its new product. I four cable subscribers to get as a free add on and then i'm so you know i'm i'm sure eventually they're going to allow that to to be a subscription product for ten twelve. Whatever dollars a month these these are these are good options to have if if you're already not on cable <hes> you know there's something like a quarter of of u._s. Households either have have canceled suld their subscription to pay t._v. Service or never had pay tv service and for a lot of those this is one more option to more options and three more options than what they have right right now it does feel to me like a little bit of an unstable <unk> librium because the way i see it shaking out is like you know you got all these choices entering the market and everybody's competing for eyeballs on one one of two things is likely in my case <hes> in my estimation happen number one silo up in their individual silos and they watched the content. They like you know the d._c. The d._c. fan boy. You're going to you know <hes> get the dc app and watch your superhero stuff. If you're a fan of the marvel the probably going to get disney if you're an star wars and some of the niche if you like your nici show you're gonna pick whatever to channel is has got the msci show <hes> but it's also seems likely that like in ten ten years. I can read a press release. Disney says you know we've looked at the numbers and eighty percent of our subscriber base subscribes to the who disney e._s._p._n. Bundle and it just doesn't make sense to support the unbundled version so now we're dropping unbundled services and it's gonna be you know twelve ninety nine or fifty nine at this point and that's where it's like. That's where it seems like. I said what their incentive i mean. The incentive is you try to lock people into buying stuff and subsidize stuff that you know is kind of nichido. Get more of those not markets. I it's going to be one of those to the idea that there's going to be fifteen streaming services at five ninety nine to fifty nine for like deck elec. Oh well a really long. Time seems unlikely. I don't feel like there's not many eyeball enough eyeballs support..

"Long dot or you're listening to KCRW this is morning edition I'm Kim masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of The Hollywood Reporter and Matt we've known that you know this industry is disrupted or Warner brothers and Warner media it's parent are sort of the ultimate case study right now of who he is calling on Warner brothers was the premier studio in this industry for so many years and being the chairman of Warner brothers was the biggest deal imaginable and they have now announced that M. Sarnoff who who comes from the BBC America and has really good experiences very well regarded but is completely almost completely unknown in Hollywood is going to be the chairman of Warner brothers and at the same time Warner media is announcing the launch of this HBO Max which is the streaming service that they have been building toward and if they are pulling programming from all over the place it to service this thing this is a huge priority so first of all your people are gonna have to look at that and say do I need this demo and will this H. B. O. Max idea work and at the same time within the industry there's a question of what she what does this mean for Warner brothers I mean if Warner brothers now going to be subservient to the streaming service and does being chairman of Warner brothers really have any kind of clout and prestige or or are you just going to be taking orders effectively from Bob Greenblatt who runs the streaming service as well as these other cable channels and HBO he reports to John Stanky the head of Warner media as does Ansari off but it's not so clear what it all means in terms of who has power this really does represent a sign of the times and entertainment because when eighteen he bought the Time Warner assets it was very clear that the crown jewel was not Warner brothers it was HBO because they could leverage HBO to create a global streaming service that will hopefully in their words complete with Netflix and that's what every conglomerate is try and to do right now they're trying to leverage with their assets are create new stuff and go head to head with Netflix so you're seeing Warner media pull back a lot of the content that was out there most notably friends which is been streaming on Netflix is now going to switch over to this new HBO Max they're gonna start doing with a bunch of other shows on the CW on Turner on the Turner networks like TNT and TBS some CNN contact this is all going to be funneled into this H. B. O. Max streaming service which will be patched as an add on to H. B. O. or as its own thing a little bit more expensive than the traditional HBO cost currently and that's where we're at right now because Comcast is doing the same thing with the NBC universal shows like the office pulling it away from Netflix doing their own thing Disney is launching their own thing we're going to get into a very stratified ecosystem where the streaming services are tops and the contents suppliers are going to be the studios that they own and hopefully others they think I mean worse is made a fortune selling TV shows the with TV division is been a lead you know Big Bang theory two and a half men all of the shows and different networks very profitably and enjoying all of that reaping all of the rewards that followed and they just sold a huge project to Netflix Sandman so they're still looking to get that cash coming in the door obviously I don't I don't even know how you sorted out and I think more importantly people in the industry don't how you sort it out if I'm making a TV show and Warner brothers making that show what goes to the HBO MAX what goes somewhere else what do I sell to CBS or ABC or or Hulu or whatever so I think it's it's almost like this dizzying situation within the industry of figuring out who is going to emerge victorious and how these things are going to be sort yeah that's a that's a potential big change for Warner brothers which as you mentioned it has been this you know people say they're the arms dealer Hollywood in the sense that they have sold everybody but if you look at what Disney is doing this he is very purposefully holding back a lot of their stuff and they are trying to create an ecosystem around this new Disney plus streaming service that will be the one stop shop for Disney now Disney has a very strong consumer brand and people know Disney and they want Disney oriented content it's not quite the same for Warner brothers they don't have that brand name they just you you wouldn't the average person on the street wouldn't even know that one brothers produced two and a half men yeah it's probably the biggest revenue generator that the company has so I I just I think that it was very interesting to see how Warner's approaches this ecosystem and who they sell to and who they don't think from the consumer standpoint of course the question is how much does this cost they said it will be more than just a H. B. O. subscription streaming subscription of fifteen a month fifteen dollars a month you know the streaming services are gonna add up if you if you want this that or the other if you want the office if you want friends if you want the stranger things those are three different subscriptions thank you Matt thank you that's Matt Bellamy editorial director of the Hollywood reporter he joins me this Monday at one thirty on the business I'm Kim masters and this is the Hollywood break down and you are listening to morning edition here on KCRW guess.

Maybe for a moment. It was his achilles that gave way and the warriors beat the rockets anyway that night as the old free Hamptons five what do we call them the Oakland four. So we call them just to OG, right? The the predate rant warriors showed up and then closed out the rockets on Friday when the Lakers hired Frank Vogel, and Jason Kidd to be head coach and assistant coach respectively, and is Brian Windhorst to pointed out, they didn't have a formal interview with Vogel until the day before they actually hired him. That's the night as well that we saw. Aw, a game seven forced between the blazers and the nuggets creating two games sevens. On Sunday remarkably neither of them warriors rockets because the warriors closed the rockets out on Friday and then two game sevens yesterday bolt decided by six or fewer points. That's a I in NBA history. That's never happened on the same day with game sevens. And then game seven that ended with a buzzer beater for the first time ever. And then today John beeline volts Myanmar for the Cleveland Cavaliers? Holy crap. It's the only way I it is the most dramatic. I think weekend in NBA history. And I know that we're not close to the championship round right now. But how can you beat this? Our poll question is it currently stands here? I want to get to a couple of phone calls before the the the news that does have the latest on Kevin Durant for game one and his availability against the blazers. What was the biggest surprise excuse me from the NBA this weekend? John leaving Michigan for Cleveland. Thirty eight percent away a shocker Lakers higher Frank Vogel. Seventeen percent game winner. Fifteen percent, boys. Irs comeback. Fifteen percent warriors beat the rockets without Durant. Fourteen percent while we're going to get again your phone calls. "As a member of Warner media. Nice. I'm glad. Nice is looking sick. But you know, what the most common there's two very common responses to the director one was like people being like, hey, I redesigned sonic. And then this. The other responses people being like. I hope you don't make your animators work too hard. It's like now suddenly people are concerned about like labor because they're like this movie's coming out in November, you got to redesign, sonic and. "Heavy duty so Warner Media Group Aka Turner Sports and if if you don't know what Turner Sports is that's T._N._t.. And T._B._S. will present all wrestling at their up runs to advertisers next month now Warner Media Slash Turner Upfront currently scheduled for May fifteenth and this is how networks announced their content lineup lineup for the fall season to advertisers so reading into this a little bit more the details that have been reported. Now these details at I'm about to state are more rumor than fact which what I just reported is more fact act and rumor but the difference we don't fact check that is true but the rumor is is going to be a two year deal. It's going to be <hes> starting in October and all eat wrestling. It has already trademarked Tuesday night. Oh Man I just missed it. I ahead it there in the night when away from me Tuesday night mayhem or something like that so they're looking to go on Tuesday nights which in in October coincides with smackdown going to Friday nights on Big Fox so that's an interesting move because we're conditioned as of right now is a wrestling fan to watch Monday night raw and then Tuesday night smackdown. Will you take away Tuesday night smackdown replace place with all the wrestling. There's my Tuesday. I'm still watching. Wrestling to condition is to go on Friday night and watch smackdown. We'll see if I knew that speaking for myself but that's a great interesting move. I think by all league wrestling what's your thoughts. I you think exactly that I think man here we go again. We've got Turner lined up for another swing at it right there like I can still knock him out. There are still laying in the wings here. This'll be interesting. I'm really really excited. This plays out of the Tuesday night as the great move especially if that's avoid resting right because I mean Wednesdays they're also as far as television's concerned but next he's got enough of a following that I think he'd want to avoid Wednesday if he could you know in Wednesday's a little bit different because you don't necessarily have to watch because it's is on the network which means I can watch it. You know when you do live television which smackdown enroll are. It feels like more of a must see because you don't know what will happen now. That's been debatable the last couple years if if that you know edginess on your edge the seat kind of viewing has been there as it used to be in the Monday night wars but we'll see but with smack dirk suny with N._F._C.. I've always felt like well. I could just watch that when it's convenient more with smackdown and raw because you never know who's GonNa debut. WHO's GonNa Win X._Y._Z.? I do never watch an X._T.. Like live right because we'll we'll typically recording because it's on a Wednesday night so we're usually doing this. That's why this is the best podcast Oh casts recorded on a Wednesday of course so yeah. We'll see if in October things start to really ramp up because as been reported Fox's really they've invested a billion dollars into smackdown so they're not just wanting that just to be a placeholder so they've asked as your content you know there's been rumors of Daniel cormet current U._f._C. heavyweight champion being a commentator said Connor McGregor being Conor McGregor with Fox giving a billion dollars. There's also been rumors that in the superstar shakeup you might see a Ronda Rousey go to smack down and then that's when the stroman maybe yes so and that's going into next week and we'll get into our ron. smackdown thoughts a little bit later as well but all we wrestling now's the time to kind of cash in on all this buzz now right now April is W._b.. Bright like they rule abors next all that stuff so is smart Kinda Lay Ehlo and just let them have this fun but can you mega the young bucks the Lucho brose Jericho cody. You know that's a lot of money and it's interesting to see like okay. That's a lot of money put into it now. Let's return on investment our ally in the business world as it's called and it's got to be here eligible for network television apparently so housing workout to that'll be interesting to see <hes> and another interesting interesting point because you brought up you know Turner's trying to get back into the game of pro wrestling which is true however this isn't being footed by the Ted Turner hooked up the world. This is the con- family who owns the Jacksonville Jaguars and <hes> English premier soccer team so it'll be interesting with the resources Turner has an history that Turner has plus the money because if you know <hes> the con- family <hes> twice as rich as the McMahon Dan family however many different enterprises whereas McMahon is kind of you know what I mean joyal but now also McMahon is dip in his toes into the N._F._l.. Or Excuse me in small AF folded to how is he got out X._F._l.. Has the full season so crazy yeah I. I'm really interested to see where it goes in. Yes this last Turner was funding the company this time they're just they're just the distribution Russian television but that's still a lot of financial backing and there's still involvement involved with that. They still have a lot of say in what goes down right yeah so it'll be interesting. I'm I'm ready to see where this goes. I'm ready for that. <hes> alternative really yeah. I definitely AM I. You know we've been talking for awhile of how you know. Please someone else you know we're tired of inconsistencies the last second decision making just as raw was after mania kind of felt like in the main event so hopefully all wrestling can kind of cash in on what me and you as debt as that hardcore fan but not necessarily into other organizations if they can grab thus I think we are the key demographic all eat wrestling. I think they have the pro wrestling tease. I have fifteen shirts. Three of them are Kenya Omega. I think they got all those guys angles right like they got that Vietnamese. I think they need to go after more so than the general public our viewers like me and you were we watch raw. We walked smackdown. We watched the pay-per-view but being completely transparent. I don't think we've ever ordered a ring of honor honor pay per view. I don't think we're necessarily keeping up with who the <hes> you know. Never openly on your thing that I can easily like. I've got a D._V._R.. Playstation Vue on something like that and it's easy easy and I can follow along. I might yeah and so with T._N._T.. And T._B._S. which is available on most all types of cable providers whether it's basic you know the the traditional cable I have sling which is that kind of alternative Internet streaming cable provider <hes> Similar T._N._T.. And T._B._S.. You have playstation vue. I believe that's available and playstation Vue so that's a big easy convenient for us. I think gin all wrestling they I need to go after us more so than the person who only watches Wrestlemainia 'cause brock listeners big and bad salary casino yeah but what's got another new store. You WanNa share good another news story. Apparently razzies broke her hand at Wrestlemainia so now there's been some rumors that she was going to be taking some time off after mania anyway from before so I maybe this a work. I mean who knows right now. What do you think well I? I thought it was interesting. That becky lynch made a comment about the story where she said. Isn't it funny that the girl the bad is woman on the planet broker hand on the face that she said was too fragile to get through a match or something like that. I'm paraphrasing <hes> so with becky legitimate comment like that. It seems like if they're smoke. There's fire <hes> everything that was reported peaking behind the curtain said that Ronda Rousey was gonna be on raw. Obviously if you watch the episode she was not <hes> so I think there's a little bit of truth to it. I mean you know I think it's hard when you're used to throw in real punches and then you're adrenaline going and then you try to throw a fake punch and you can probably roll a wrist or in this case break a hand because you're you're doing something not natural. You're trying to hurt someone but not hurt someone but make it look like it hurts someone right and so that's going to be difficult to to perform if you're not used to it and so you can hurt yourself by doing those kind of actions and it looks like in this case Ronda Rousey burke that Hain see you again. I like it like we don't need rowzee coming back for a rematch and we don't need <hes> you know like Becky Lynch can go on now and and take on other competitive. This is a perfect time for those times off that we've talked about that. Restaurants can get you don't have to have an off season but there's no reason raising can't go away for a couple of months now. Rest get better think of a good story line options come back with some ideas you know creative will be thinking also and let's see your I mean what we can do like be. It's two thousand nineteen ear the storyline so you know what I mean like. Let's do this like let her go like she does not need to be on these shows yet like she is going to be the next night. We like well. I would be great. Nobody gives a fuck yet. No one's clamoring for the night after after Wrestlemainia the rematch that we already just solved so I agree with you. Let's just as you already gave us. The match in many different ways beforehand it'll be interesting though to see how that reset happens for Rhonda Rows if she does take that extended period of time Mauve because it kind of felt like starting to wrestlemanias ago it was hit the ground running round around around around around around Rhonda. We got towards the end where we said Hey. We don't really need Rhonda all the time. She takes all this time out. Is it at aside out of mine or resit me. I really miss the Ronda Rousey match see I got it you you. She goes away for a couple of months. You also bring up <hes> Bazeley right and she starts going through fucks and she's got her to latkes right and then she he gets up after a couple months up to becky lynch right to try to take on and then you bust out Ron and then you've got four horse women you do the four whores women thing definitely time for right in time for October Fox switch you think October. I was GONNA say summer. Slim that the up to then yeah you could do that too. <hes> yeah so we have a little far out. That's what six months out so yeah. It's a little but yeah but will who knows she might get pregnant. You know during this time often menzies menzies out for nine months or a little bit longer we shall see what happens because hurt her wanting to start. A family has been known since her U._F._c. days. That's one thing she's expressed numerous times especially since Marion Travis Brown around that she wants to start a family obviously starting at family from the female perspective isn't just a Oh we started a family now. Let's get back to work. It's a little bit longer assess well. Not I'm talking about about the process of giving birth you know if a man starts a family they can go back to work after the announcement of a pregnancy woman actually has to go through those trimester or trimesters pregnant right the <hes>. We'll see if that happens. During this time off you know <hes> that would be an interesting wrinkle into the story that is Ronda Rousey but as of right now yeah like you stated run arouse his hands broke from wrestlemainia match and also <music> all elite wrestling as of reported today. It's going to be in the fall schedule for the Turner Sports T._B._S.. T._N._T.. Fall Lineup says interesting. I can't wait to hear more all right so we're GONNA go through the weekend right..

So now we're going to have to pay for that as well. It's not gonna just come with your cable again have to pay for it. The shakeup is a gamble for AT and T which is seen as bottom line benefit over the past six months from hit shows and movies developed by Time Warner executives in an interview last year with the journal chief executive Randall Stephenson said AT and T would treat Warner media differently than past acquisition acquisition targets because of the creative imagination needed for the media business to succeed. "Here. Let's let's go over some of them and part of this too. Is that the lawyer has released a video showing the truth behind the Covington controversy and why they're so upset about it. All and why they should rightfully be upset for anyone that has refused to admit that there are times that the media goes beyond getting it wrong. Sometimes they'll go even further than that where their editorial bias in their decisions on what to cover what not to cover and sometimes they'll go even further than that. Which I thought we saw in the Covington highschool case where they didn't even care about what the. Facts were they cared about. What the internet was gossiping about in. They started to report it as facts to smear high school children at a March for life rally. Why because they wore red hats. It's disgusting. The way they treated those kids. And why are we so upset about it? Well. I think that there hasn't really been much Justice for these high school students. I don't think that they did an adequate job of. You know, it's one thing to backtrack. But it's another thing to set the record straight in apologize. Mostly they backtracked. Only some of the personalities apologized in admitted they were wrong in to this day. There are still commentators out there that are smearing these kids. They are not celebrities. They are not people in public life. They're not someone that you would normally think have certain protections when it comes to this extreme level of criticism in smears against them. So this I think is the beauty behind this lawsuit, or at least the threat of lawsuit right now. And I am not only do I think they have a strong case. I think they're gonna what bonds some entities here. Some news, quote, unquote entities. And we're gonna talk to Brad young from harassed Al Fisher in young in about ten fifteen minutes about that too. I wanted to get his take as a lawyer if he thinks these guys have a case, okay? So Nick, San manslaughter released a video showing the truth behind the comington controversy. There's a lot of different people that are linking to this last. I checked it was close to maybe a quarter of a million views or half a million views somewhere in there. But it's definitely on his way up. It's being shown a lot of different news agencies Lincoln to it right now. So the teenagers name and face a recognizable in millions of households across the country after the mainstream media made him the target of an online Lynch mob for legibly, mocking native American may on activists in Washington DC last month. This is the way it was written on the blaze to really good right up about this. So San man's team of lawyers took the first step sending fifty four letters to media organizations. Journalists Hollywood celebrities Catholic organizations and saying that they are culpable in defaming Sanmen in their contribution to the media's initial narrative Mary Jews on the list. Okay. So the legal counsel representing Nichols family have said they will seek Justice for the harm allegedly done to the team. Okay. Here's here's everyone that I could see on the list, and so far there's a list of fifty four not gonna read every single one of them. But you kind of get an idea of the Washington Post New York Times CNN NPR NPR. TMZ the diocese of Covington. Diocese of Lexington. Archdiocese a Louisville diocese of Baltimore seven CNN personalities, including SE Cup who I believe actually apologized, but maybe I'm wrong. Eight people from the Washington Post four people from the New York Times five from NBC and MSNBC, including savannah Guthrie who did that interview with nNcholas Sandman in was still accusing him through her line of questioning the even after all the video surfaced. So that was pretty joy Reid on their Chuck Todd's on there to let's see HBO Bill. Maher Warner media G Q the hill, the Atlantic. Elizabeth warren. Omar, which is her last name. She said some pretty terrible, and she's actually pointed out inside of this video that the Covington teens lawyer put out Kathy Griffin, Melissa Milano in Jim Carey altogether, fifty four and part of this problem is that after this online video surfaced in these news agencies thought to themselves. You know, what we're more of a bunch of gossipers than we are news. So what we're gonna do is. We're just going to take this video. We're going to go beyond speculation. We're just gonna say that these kids were doing things they actually we have no proof of them doing. They were yelling. They were abusive. They were aggressive. They were slurring they were fighting. They were intimidating. They were about to start their own. I listened to some of the things that Nathan Phillips. He's the native American protester that approach these teens on the footsteps at the Lincoln Memorial. Listen to the some of the things he said. And this is where the news agencies were getting their information. They go directly to him and activists who is out there to publicize himself and his message as opposed to actually doing the bare minimum amount of research in using a little bit of their journalistic integrity to actually figure out what happened there. So instead, they go to one side and activist get his side and broadcast it as if it's the truth. Here's a couple of things that Nathan Phillips said before they actually saw anything that would back up and evens claims they didn't question him. They just wanted to take his word is truth. Now, keep in mind too. How many of these things that he brings up inside of the media? How many of these things have been not only debunked? But completely completely been exposed as lies. Here's puerta. This. There is a group of over two hundred money point. Now, these are interviews with some of these large news agencies. You know, the C N N's and the MSNBC's in them. They were quick to get him in Bookham for interviews. They wanted to hear what he had to say. There is a group of over two hundred young angry white men, and they were facing down just for black individuals. And it was coming to a point where a snap of a finger could have caused them kids to descend on does for individuals. So now, they're going back to the video now keep in mind, two hundred eighty degree white boys that are ready to descend on these four black individuals. There talk. Talking about the the Hebrew nationals. I can't remember what they were called. The is Hebrew Israeli national nights or something the organizations called. The black. Hebrew, israelites. That's right now, I was talking about the hot dog. I got the. Got the hotdog mixed up. So you have the teams that are waiting to get picked up on the bus their sixteen year olds getting picked up because they were there for the March for life, and the group of the black Hebrew Israelites were yelling and screaming. Some of the pretty pretty disgusting vile things at these teenagers, and in no way wants the video was released that you can see these teens at all acting aggressive towards these four individuals. That were yelling some pretty hateful things. What you're about to hear are the, and of course, we can't air everything that that group of four were yelling and screaming. But here's part of which shows the kids were just standing there while they were getting yelled at by these four going on here. Now, this is a pretty circle, please. Oh, please. You mean? When you hear the high school kids yelling, why are you being mean the times they're yelling nets racist? And some of the other things that that group were yelling were and I'm gonna paraphrase because I can't ear it on this radio station is so disgraceful. But you know, there there is some African Americans incited the teens group the ones that were there for the March for life. They were yelling that they're going to harvest your organs theory, yelling things like your future school shooters. They were using, you know, some pretty poor language that I couldn't repeat as well. When you know sexually charged language, homophobic language, and they were yelling all of these things. They were using hate slurs at these teens in by all accounts, we've watched I mean, we we have almost think we have everything on video from the start of the confrontation to the end when they were walking on the bus because everyone had their cell phones out at no time. Was there any indicate? That any of those teenagers were at all going to try to number one physically approach these four or to even tried to intimidate these four that were there yelling things at them. So let's continue what activists Nathan Phillips the native American activists as he continues to tell all of these lies of the accounts of what happened and I went in front of that mob mob being the teenage boys appeared to be their prey on in the pray be in the four that were yelling at them all that hate.

And for those of you don't know the town that city of Holywood, basically shuts down on, you know, big holiday weeks, all the executives I take off meaning even early and we're starting to see that today because the news kind of slowed down to a, you know, very slow rate. So we're working on less interesting stories than usual, but we do have some in pinions to to to give you on these stories. So let's jump into it. Let's start off with film struck which it was nnounced was being canceled. You know, there have been petitions. And now some filmmakers have gathered together in support of trying to see film struck each day. Tell us about it. Yes, there's a huge uproar. When wonder brothers announced that it would be shattering film struck last month and a petition arose online, which as we all know never really leave anything, but then bigger names just gambled or Toro and other claimed rector started to put their throw their weight behind this online petition. "Yeah. I think you have to look at it in the larger context of the Time Warner acquisition, and what kind of been going on with that company for the last few months before film struck with shutdown Warner media also shut down another service that they owned called drama fever that was incredibly popular for accessing all the popular Korean dramas and other international content. That was shut down a week or so later films struck with shutdown Warner media has also shut down its digital video arm was called super deluxe. They were making like experimental Facebook interactive shows, and and short-form YouTube series, and that type of thing all three of those businesses were shut down in quick succession. And I think you're right that a lot of studies that have have looked at streaming services over the last two years have have found that most people are gonna subscri-. About three or four services. You're going to have your net. Netflix then maybe your Amazon or your Hulu, and then you've got room for one or two others. And Warner media has said that they're going to launch a streaming service in the twenty nineteen and my expectation, although they're not saying yet, what kind of content will be honest service. My expectation is that we will see some of the film struck catalog drama Tibor content potentially pop up in in that service in a bundled. Offering that is a better price point for consumers, and that makes more sense for for Warner media. It makes sense that the this is like you said people aren't going to aren't gonna subscribe for more than maybe four services and a little thing like film struck. I don't think it's going to go with. I think film struck will return in some form that catalog probably from somewhere else inside Warner media, but far too beloved to go entirely, I think and that criterion collection that they had access to is incredibly important to film scholars and people who love movies. So I'm sure that people will be able to continue to get that content in some way, venture -ly just won't be through film struck. I was talking to somebody about how there's a lot of older content that used to sort of fluff up the catalog at Netflix, Amazon that doesn't have a lot of value because everybody is paying for new content. And that's that's another piece not just old movies, but old TV shows where. I feel like in the end they will find a home because there is a niche there that will be served by having them. But who knows I feel like we have to get there. And right now, we're in the race of new content. And and that that catalog is very important. I mean, Netflix, obviously doesn't share a lot about viewership. But you've got to believe that friends is one of the hopless straightened shows on Netflix. I mean, just anecdotally that number of people who either rewatch the whole series the United that in the last year or young people who discover my daughter is seventeen and she watched all of the friends episodes. So so that is incredibly valuable content to a Netflix or a Hulu or Amazon. What's interesting is that friends is Warner Brothers. So most likely streaming service Warner media launchers and the next year will have friends. So I think part of what we're seeing with the the content the original content arms race is that Netflix sauve the writing on the wall a few years ago that. Eventually they would lose access to the these catalogs Disney's already pulled its catalogue..

"This is I think the TV transformation of the TV industry is one of the most amazing, and how technology is transforming. It is one of the most interesting stories in media and technology right now, it's we'll keep an eye on another angle here that I wanted to bring up there were a couple of shutdowns in the digital media space. And I'm curious what people think that might mean for the future of digital media film. Struck got shut down. Is Warner media streaming service for classic movies. It was shut down by the new owners AT and T defy media. And now we read about this in the Hollywood reporter had seventy five million YouTube subscribers across a bunch of different brands and previously owned screen junkies, which they sold earlier this year that also they basically have shut down the company are selling off those those existing YouTube brands of these are very diff. Stories in many ways, but they to something that I think is interesting. It's how this landscape is evolving film struck. It seems like this might be AT and T saying we know that people aren't going to subscribe to forty different niche services, and we wanna come up with a new bigger service that we wanna put all of our content into and I feel like consolidation of all of these different services thing that's going to happen because nobody we're not going to have twenty different eight dollar a month services. Be wildly successful. Natalie. What how did you read the film struck shutdown?.

"The biggest provider of pay tv in the us with cable there's charter as well which is largely cable dishes satellite and it's number four there's verizon files cox and altus sling tv actually has a surprising lee high two point three million subscribers and direct tv has direct tv now has one point five million so what she is just another over the top product right for now so what do you what do you mean where where's this go well at and t is going to be able to leverage this to get watch tv to grow and that's that's great i'm i want to stress that i am not anti capitalism or anti consumer or antibusiness in any way shape or form i understand how it works even if i don't like it but let's say i build up a a small media company that caters to children and previously i would want to work with you know warner media to get my service bundled with the cartoon network because that gives me a lot of exposure because people are going to want to purchase in streaming cartoon network content and if i can be attached onto that that's great i will try to work to to get that this reverses it with at and t owning warner media they could and they probably won't but they could they could say oh if you wanna be in a bundle with cartoon network you can't be in a bundle with you know name another child programming disney okay you have to cut your ties with disney if you wanna be bundled with cartoon network right this this is the kind of leverage that's possible and the potential for abuses there and that's why so many people are afraid of what at and t could do nobody's saying that they will do it but it's that they could so are when you see a company like disney pushing so hard into its own streaming music streaming video service it's launching an espn stand on espn product this year next year it's launching a standalone disney streaming service.
