Social Media Site Gab Is Surging, Even As Critics Blame It For Capitol Violence

"The amount of election-related disinformation online has dropped dramatically at after several media platforms band president trump. Almost two weeks ago. Facebook twitter pinterest instagram spotify twitch suspended trump and several of his allies on january eighth two days after the deadly insurrection at the capitol and since then misinformation on those savings as plummeted by more than seventy percent. This according to the research firm signal labs dr thompson staff writer at the atlantic joins us from washington as he does every monday and derek. This should not be surprising. Studied by cornell in october showed that globally around the world. President trump was the largest driver of false information about the coronavirus. Still your thoughts on this ban. Reducing disinformation by seventy percent. I think it's pretty straightforward Donald trump is the former in chief. He has been missing former chief for all four years of his presidency. He has tens of millions of followers. So anyone else who was similarly dishonest or similarly disinterested in truth Gonna reach nearly as many people because they don't have tens of millions of followers on twitter and so of course banning him from the site is absolutely reduced this information. It's it's made it harder for him to put stuff into the public waterways of of information and it's been hard to re tweet him or to jump on conspiracy theories and then embellish them as as we have seen so often on twitter on facebook across social media so it's not surprising at all and this is i think exactly what a lot of social media critics have then predicting for years. They've said if you directly. Take on the leading mongers of disinformation. You're gonna be able to erase it from the site. Yeah okay but quite couple questions. Zig no found that twitter mentions election fraud. Went from two point. Five million to just over six hundred and eighty thousand it reports that hashtags related to the insurrection at the capitol dropped a core across platforms by about ninety five percent. Twitter by the way also banned seventy thousand accounts affiliated with ridiculous and baseless cunanan on conspiracy theory so first question given how immediate the impact was. It doesn't show that these platforms could have done this sooner. I think this is tough. So social media has in the last decade banning. What i acquainted with the wild west in terms of its regulation they haven't exactly applied laws evenly. They don't necessarily even have laws. The kind of regulation that you need to apply across social media platforms facebook twitter etc doesn't exist at the federal level yet and as a result there was a little bit of a lese sayre anything goes sort of feel like and if you've ever seen a television show removing about the wild west in the middle of late nineteenth century that's essentially what you had Online now we're starting to see the law creep into the proverbial wyoming's of twitter and facebook. They're starting to really take action against people that very clearly violated terms of service. And in this case you know incite violence basement conspiracy theory. So i'm not surprised at this happened I think that the incident of one six the insurrection. The capital siege Essentially served as a litmus test And you saw a lot of social media companies essentially act around that. But i think we need rules going forward because hopefully fingers crossed. You're not gonna have moments like the capital siege or that insurrection every single week but you still need some law going forward determine who stays on the site and who violates the terms of service so much. They have to be platform. Well wait a minute. Isn't this though. Whack-a-mole i mean doesn't this mean that president trump and his allies and white supremacists who follow him and average voters will just gravitate to or create other forms. Really interesting question. So on the one hand i totally agree with you If they're kicked off of facebook kicked off of twitter they're just gonna go to some place like gabar parlor but with parlor for example we saw that parlor itself was somewhat d. platform. Or at least unserved. You had companies that were providing both its servers technology and discover ability. Essentially say you have proven yourself beyond the pale and we don't want to work with you anymore. So we'll see where these people go because they're going to go somewhere right now. I think they're probably going to this other social media site called gab But it raises the prospect that today you know you look at a place like facebook and twitter and it is inclusive of a huge wide variety of ideologies. Far left to far right. But what happens when social media sites essentially. Start to buy kate by ideology. Where say you know. The centre-left is on twitter and conservatives are on You know gab And then the leftist go onto some other platform. It means that are already fractured already. Somewhat shattered sent to the shared reality in america is going to become even more fractured an even more fragmented

Kemba Walker Rusty, But Also ‘Pain-Free’ In Return For Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks

"Boston celtics had a bad weekend and kimball walking. I would call them. Losers kemba walker. I had a bad return simply because they got smoked at harm by the new york knicks by thirty points and kemba walker made his return now again. He didn't have a great game individually but he got through the game although he did leave in the third quarter with injury. He was fine to return if he could have been. He was that his minutes restriction. So he wasn't gonna come back now. We're getting drilled anyway but kemba walker said after all the right things felt good to be back at their now. It's just a matter of getting some getting his wind back and he's hoping to have that minutes restriction lifted. These things usually take probably three or four games at least Before we get there but one of the probably as a bit crazy we've seen some strange scores a strange result but seeing the boston celtics get absolutely hammered. No jason tatum. Who's out with coronavirus. Right now by thirty to attain the knicks. Who have been awful. Recently was a real big surprise really. I know the celtics hadn't played so they were a bit rusty. But i don't think we really expected them to get hammett what By that much. Good signs for the knicks. Obi toppin they rookie came back Hit two threes as well. We we heard all about how he played at close to the rim. They knocked down threes last night. That's how confident he was feeling. Took four two of them so that was great. Julius randle had another very good game here for the knicks for the celtics. They just couldn't get it going at all here at thirty five points in the first half alone And i think it was only fifty after three quarters they had yes so really shocking performance here from the celtics once they get back once they get jason tatum back. I think they'll be fine but this is the one they want to flush down. The toilet drilled at harm. And that's what the coaches say. I don't really want to evaluate this guy just like let's just flush the toilet.

How to Read a Bible Verse: Ephesians 4: 22-24

"Is a fijian's for versus twenty two through twenty four if you wanna follow along equations is in the new testament so this is sort of towards the back of your bible. Caso pause me. If you need to find the passage seasons for and here we go. You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires to be made new in the attitude of your minds and to put on the new self created to be like god in true righteousness and holiness so we always follow the same message method to the first thing that we ask is. What does this say. We actually want to read this a few times and ask the question. Do i stand what this means. And when we begin to ask do i understand. Can i restate someone else. If i if my ten year old came in the room right now. Could i explain this passage. Could i say. Hey this is what. I read in the bible this morning. This what it means. Most of us need to slow down and read it a few times. And i'm gonna read it to you again and i want you to listen again and i want you to picture what's happening in this passage if you could use your imagination to picture this passage here we go. You were taught with regard to your former way of life to put off your old self which is being corrupted by its deceitful. Desires to be may new in the attitude of your mind and to put on the new self created to be like god in true righteousness and holiness. I saw. i don't know if you're like. I have the brakes screeching in my mind on my toes. It actually say that we've been created to be like god it does. It actually says that you might want to underline. I'd be like created by god isn't got above us isn't god holy isn't he. His ways are not always yeah. You should have questions about that. Of course you want to look at what. The next phrase is because it says created to be like god in true righteousness and holiness. So we've got this aspirational vision of what we can be what we were actually created to be like

"The dates was friday march. Twenty fifth nineteen seventy seven. The location was lens. Brace sports and social club house. Teddington greater london uk. The police briefing was being held in a small room in the pavilion. The was tense with excitement. The officers present had been working toward this moment for almost two years and it was time to raid the suspected lsd laboratory at twenty. Three more road hampton wick kingston-upon-thames a short drive away from the briefing location. The rate had been brought forward because it was known. Small writing group consisted of several operation. Julie detectives including stephen bentley and eric wright who had been undercover in rural wales on the wider inquiry. Also present were a small group of scenes of crime officers who were going to search the house in gather evidence. The officers left the briefing and took up position. The raiding party had split up some went to the front door while others went to the rear of the house. That was inductions. It was eight. Oh five pm exactly and detective constables. Bentley and right in the groove that clambered over offense at the back of the lodge detached house as the to approach the french windows stevenson to greenwich his mate and colleague. Eric who was alongside him. There was a cry of geronimo. In eric's unmistakable gloucestershire ebba. Then one of the offices sworn garage bar breaking the glass windows. That was shouts. It police stay still. Don't move but officers could hit people running scurrying around like giant mice. It was mayhem for one. It was a little scary. what would they find. Would there be resistance. Oh violence what would happen next for detective constable stephen bentley. It was a life changing experience and it all started with a phone call. He received from detective inspector. Dick lee the operational commander of the newly formed. Secret of julie squad back in april one thousand nine hundred seventy six. The following podcast is brought to you by true crime investigators. uk but who are they. Joan was a police officer for thirty years working locally and nationally as detective. Sally was also a police officer. For twelve years and then retrained as a lawyer and practiced in criminal law now both retired and review cases of interest. Some sold some undetected throughout this series. They'll discuss the cases. They're reviewing and interview relevant parties including police officers suspects witnesses and experts. The next case for review is counted drug investigation operation. Julie which took place in the mid seventies and an interview with one of the undercover agents involved in investigation steven bentley. Just like say welcome to everybody and all of our listeners. Whether you'll new to his own not and we just wanna say that. We're really pleased with the progress of the series. We've been so well received without a lot of interest and with hudson good reviews as well. So what do you think of the response john. Well we're absolutely astounded as the worldwide coverage that we received and the fact that we now talk into all the podcasters in the crime community. Australia america all parts of the world in fact. And we're just can't believe how we've taken off and mainly because of the lockdown of course technologies sort of come to the fore everybody's now on skype and other types of media which is fantastic. Doesn't it it has. Yeah i'm we've been am dragged into the twenty first century whether we like it or not so with within our podcast series. We want to cover all kinds of serious crime. Not not just the murders but in particular. We've got an interest in undercover police. In way we're interested in the work that undercover officers do when the pressure that that brings and then potentially the danger that that brings with that kind of work and with that in mind. We decided to bring operation. Julie to the podcast. Both of us had read a book called undercover operation jubilee. The inside story and that was really fascinating book written by one officer who was involved in operation julie and his name's steven bentley. So we sort of conducted some research around. That didn't wait. What we found was that there was a detective inspector. Dick lee in thames valley drug squad and he was putting together his sort of annual report. That a ba- late nineteen seventy four and he realized that there was some kind of anomaly in the his undercover officers. Were very active in the pop festival scene and regularly they were being offered amounts of ls stay and considerable amounts of lsd.

How To Pray Against Negative Thinking

"First prayer is over negative thinking if you ever want a sneak peek into the direction that your day or week is headed. Just look at your thoughts. What you were thinking has power to direct the course of your entire day starting with positive. In truthful thoughts can lead to a peaceful and fulfilling day. Negative thoughts however not aligned. With god's truth can lead to a confusing and frustrating day. This is why god wants us. To keep our thoughts on good things philippians. Chapter four verse. Eight tells us whatever is true. Whatever is noble. Whatevers right whatever is pure whatever is lovely. Whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy. Think about such things. If changing our thoughts from negative to positive can change our day from good to bad they also have the power to direct. The course of our lives now. That is serious. Which is why. The bible also instructs us in second corinthians chapter ten verse five to take captive every thought to make it obedient to christ. Now this may seem easier said than done because it is but our thought life is something that we can pray about a constant prayer of mine. Is that my thoughts will will ally with god's truth that she will reveal an uproot any lies in my mind and replace them with good and truthful thoughts.

"The other one was obviously like. What's it like to work? They're building this community of job seekers on the same at the same time and that's where a lot of the information empowers coming from. We're reaching out to them and say what else can we tell you? What else do you want to know? I fundamentally fundamentally believe that we should give job seekers agency right. We should not prescribe a one. Size fits all. This is what people I means because people are different and have different priorities and different needs. And you WANNA be able to promote a small company that maybe doesn't have the funds or the profit margins to do all the things that we would maybe dream of being people. I but you might WanNa work small company because you have big more impact right. So how do we create the information and the ability to search information that supports people? I but give agency to job seekers much of the discussion among Natalie and her team focused at the criteria for people. I company should Be Yours. Some of the values. They landed on remote friendly flexible schedules. A synchronous communication forty hours or less per week and opportunities for professional development. They all go through a very manual process. And there's a committee right now that reviews each individual applicant. We all review in. There has to be kind of a unanimous agreement. That company feels like. They're they're exhibiting people first behaviors this. Then there's a big questionnaire we're getting on the phone with a lot of these companies to so it's A. It's a very slow moving learning process for us because it we're trying to understand like how deep can we get into these organizations without really? You know we're not going to get a warranty right. I'm not going to physically go to these offices and say are you doing this thing today? I mean to that argument you could be a remote position and then turns out. You're not really remote I. There's there's some trust and some risk involved in all of this no matter what but I do want it to be a place where people trust the companies that we've listed. There are not evil the while the team was working on the people first job sport along with other products. And then well you know. We took a pause and as a team. We agreed that especially those first. You know three or four weeks. We really agree that internally we needed space to just process what was going on in the world is as parents as children of older folks says like all that stuff just everybody just needed to take a break and there is not going to be the mental space to like. Hey let's go launch a thing that we've been working on forever and also on the flip side is I just couldn't imagine contributing more to people's inboxes. I mean the level of sales and marketing. I'm sorry I mean the I respect a lot of these companies so much but their teams just went wild and we kind of looked at it and said guys like I'm not contributing more to that like that's just that's just not okay. Then as a couple of weeks went in my message to the team was were very lucky that we are a company that is profitable right like a real business so we don't have the pressures externally to do things and we can afford some level of downturn. We know that we don't need to launch thing to keep growing right so we kind of looked so like what are the internal projects that we want to spend time on people. First jobs is one of those things that was very meaningful to our team and once it was ready to go and I felt you know an important obligation to my team as well to like. Give them the opportunity to shine a light on something that they cared about. But it's a place to find jobs and a bunch of companies aren't hiring so you know we spend up we spent a couple of weeks looking internally and saying like all right so we have this job board but what do we actually care about like. Why did we build it? And we built it to connect people with companies that care about them and in a world where you know so the best companies are on hold hiring but some are still hiring and on the other side is these massive layoffs that were seeing of incredibly qualified. Wonderful people who are now looking for a job could be launched people first jobs as also resource to connect the two and so we went to the companies that we had already been ready to launch with and said. Who's hiring? Who isn't right quickly handled that we put some banners up on each company pages the profile pages where it said what their status and then we put together. We spent a week and a half putting together cove nineteen resources for job seekers and for companies and so we made sure that when we launched it not only was it to shine a light on some of these companies that we've already vetted but also to introduce company may not have vetted them yet but here's companies who are hiring and here's folks who are looking for a job right now and can we bring those things together. So we've been spending a lot of our time these last couple of weeks just kind of being present on the Internet sites that publish just list of companies that either are hiring freeze. Hiring stopped hiring. There's on the flip side of that these google. I don't know if you've seen a google sheets full of this company just laid off people in. It's everybody's name and contact info and linked in profiles and it's everywhere and we're just trying to collect it all into one spot so we've created this in nineteen resource section. And we're just. That's really what my team is doing like. They're just they're just in they're trying to. Can we help right now? There's no cost for companies to list positions on people for jobs. The plan is to eventually charge employers while keeping the site free for job seekers but not only in her team are taking things slow and evaluating day by day. What's most needed? There are definitely companies behaving very poorly right now. Whether it's forcing workers to come into the office handling layoffs in callous way or surveilling remote employees does a time and place for naming and shaming that place mostly being the twitter feed of Base Cam. Cto David Heimer Hanson. If you haven't already you should check the episode. We did last week. About banning employee surveillance technology companies from integrating with basecamp. Anyway nine is taking a different tack. She wants to highlight companies. That are setting good examples. Seven thinking a lot about this crisis and I've been telling the team companies that I mentor. You know these types of situations bring out the best in the worst and people right but what? We will remember the actions and behaviors of those. That were good and cared and did meaningful things. You kinda really reflect on that and make sure that you're really empathetic and really caring. If I told you that I got an email from salesperson from a large company that we all know that was basically threatening me. Pay Me for a year or things are going to be bad. And that's that's the kind of stuff like this is about helping people who are looking for a job right if they got to pick a new place especially in a time of crisis. Can we help them? Discover a place where empathy is natural. Maybe especially at least when the world is crumbling. At least you don't have to teach them that. Meanwhile entrance Jumping remote students alongside their other obligations. Andrew Teaching Assistant in Stanford's Computer Science Department and figuring out how to virtually connect with his undergraduate students apply pushing forward with the plans. She already had for the spring. I was planning on taking this spring. Quarter off doing an internship within electric flying cars. Start up in the bay area. What ended up happening was that internship just had to turn into a remote internship which was definitely a bummer because the coolest part about working for like an electric flying car company is getting to see an like experience the electric line car which I will never get to do but It's still being is still really awesome. That they will able to accommodate Have me work remotely? Ta Class at Stanford To one it's Artificial intelligence class. I'd say remote. School has been a lot more work than I anticipated. Pure science majors. Were Super Lucky. Because a lot of our classes even when we were on campus they were recorded bailable online and so the transition has been as difficult for computer science students and so the biggest transition for us is that are all all of our office hours which used to be in person in That engaged interact with students have been moved online so in addition to all the technical challenges. How do you run in office hours over Zoom we? We definitely miss out on the human aspect of being able to sit down with a student in walk through their code of their problem solving. And they're thinking and so that's been a transition as well. What are some tips that you've picked up in just a few short weeks of doing remote internship that you think would be helpful to share with other students? Who are looking at remote work Or kind of embarking on their first time doing remote work. One thing that I learned is to just check in really often with clever. Your mentor is or your manager Because I would say the first few days I thought remote work met that I like work out at home by myself and I would just like get work done on my own time and when I'm done I would like go and show results to mentor. But I realized very quickly that that wouldn't be a very productive way for me to interact with my team. My coworkers on so what ended up happening is over the next couple of weeks. I started giving more updates to my mentor If I had any questions or I was struggling with something I would just message him on slack and say hey. Do you have some time to just like jump on Google hangouts that ended up becoming a lot more fluid so I would just say just like to not be afraid to ask for help and not be afraid to send constant updates truckin all the time rework is produced by Waylon. "Plus you have your websites, you and your and your groups websites. You got six or seven different avenues at your. Distributing photos through in when you go to my website. When you see the pictures, it's the pictures are all hosted on flicker. Flipper. Okay. No flicker flicker flicker. Okay. So you're not using anything that somebody can go to shut was sealed when a use it here? Shudder, there's there's a bunch of their smug mugs muschamp I all, but I used flicker for a long time now and that that's a free website for for hosting your pictures in. It's got Greek community there. You can look at a lot of fire pictures on that. Okay. So so for somebody who's starting out or who's has an interest in pursuing this part of of the hobby. Because right. It's kinda ties in I you sort of with a scanner and you're listening to what's going on there and you kind of, you know, taking what you're listening to in and going out there and associated photography side to it, which is a huge hobby on its own. For somebody who has basically just radio and maybe their cell phone white would be a good way for somebody to start. You recommend them getting a cheap body DSL are or can they go out there and just start putting a photo gallery together on flicker a war on their own website, just using what they have in their pocket right now. You know, the old cliche, whatever Kamya camera you have with you is the best camera you got. Yes, don't go on spend thousands and thousands of dollars on a camera when you're first starting use whatever point and shoot you have whenever this all you might have, don't buy an expensive one to start working to see if you really like it because it's a big commitment. I started out forty five years ago with film cameras, shooting slide film, and I had to at that time one with all black white film in it and the other one color slide film. So I've evolved a little bit, you know, I go on the digital route. You know, I had a cheap Kodak camera for a while when they first came out, and then I upgraded to that Nikon d, seven thousand, which is, let's see here six years old. Now it's time the by another body and I'll just keep that for spare, but just use whatever you got and just go out practice and take some pictures. That's right. Practice makes perfect. And it doesn't have to be the fire photography that makes you practice. It could be anything that gets you to. To pick up the camera and start shooting. I know as an amateur photographer myself mean, it's it was when I first got started. It was, you know anything in the corner just to get used to the dials and getting out of program and into aperture priority or or you know, shutter priority and playing with the white balances. There's a lot that goes on and when you're excited and you journalist pumping, you're at the fire scene that you know, that's not the time to learn the camera for sure. You know, many times when I was a lot younger, you open up. The are start rewinding the role of film and realized never hope down the school, and you took twenty pictures in never the fell, never advanced. This one of those moments where you can actually feel your heart sink into the feet right, or you didn't have the the flash sync, right? Or you had the wrong aperture and they all came out black all. There was a lot of that in the early days, you know, digital photography for firefighter fy has really been a game changer and also the ability to share it immediately. You know before when you Chata roll the slide film, you'd have to wait a week. Okay. Now you take a picture on your phone. You're sharing it with the whole world in seconds or you're looking at flicker or I take that back. I'm sorry. Periscope, you'll watch it while it happens. You live in from your computer now. Yeah, it's it's amazing how much technology has..

"I mean, yeah, then in while I'm on that point now the thing is be very sensitive than victims. You know, start waving the camera around that a car accident or something. When somebody's hurt, some people are going to start getting upset, never take pictures of victims. And if you ever publish again, I I very rarely do a car action run. If I do, I scare the marketplace. You know, you don't want to, you know, give anybody emission, the drag you into court or be mad at you. That's that's some good advice right there. So as far as the pictures themselves, which pictures the always find out become your most popular. Oh, you most requested type or maybe the most downloaded pictures that you have on your website? What's really crazy is people love, shiny, red, fire trucks. You know, you know, our position, we have about eight people. We have website. If you want to go to the website, you can go to t. fire photo, dot org. The end that CT like Connecticut, CT, fire photo, dot org. And also you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, I think we have Instagram, I'm not sure, but you could check all the sealed social media's out. But we have a guy that keeps track while the social media. And for some reason, if there's a nice fire truck picture, that's the most liked, believe it or not. Excellent. That's always good to know. So maybe it's not even like get down there and take pictures of the fire scene, but maybe go down while doing a wash down on a Sunday that when a clean the trucks, and that's even a good way of maybe gaining the trust of the fire department that that you want to build a relationship with as well. I mean, even some in house off yet. I mean, like I said, you know if it's volunteer fire department, go down and offer, you know, say, hey, you do some training or something. You need to take some pictures for you. I'd love to do it for you. Grenell's a great way to do it. So as far as like, you've, you've taken the pictures and and you're back now from whatever was the event, what's your. Next process in a step of getting them off the camera and onto a online platform. What are your your next steps? Okay. Well, when I do is I I have a whole checklist it when I go out to a fire scene and take pictures. I probably spent forty five minutes to an hour, just meet me something anybody, how many pictures I take, just going through the steps of cataloging the pictures, taking editing as far as you know, darkness and sharpness and stuff like that, then I upload them to my website. Okay, which is our ES two-three c. u. e. dot net. Then from there I start sharing the pictures on social media. I have a Facebook page. You look for. He, you know, most of my stuff is just r. e. s. two three CUE. So I share it on Facebook, Twitter, and then I don't allow some pictures onto Instagram. Then from there they uploaded to the use OC website than I send the pictures to the individual department. And then I also published a lot of photographs in the fire news newspaper. You can look that up, fire news, originating out there, Long Island. I don't know what their website is. I think as far I'll start our fire news dot com..

"Manufacturers equipment can be placed anywhere within this twenty five infrastructure. Now, again, barring the fact that there might be some proprietary technology in play here. Okay, that is now now no longer open. So the first part we had to look at is the common air interface a c. a. i. or sometimes abbreviated as p twenty five c, I, you can think of this as the typical over the air or our f- radio path of the network. This is the signal the frequency. This could be radio to radio or radio to bay station and theory behind this is that radio should be able to talk to one another. No matter of who's radio us again, because it's digital, the worry that somebody may lockdown or change the the way that the coating is done that limits you. So you can't say, well, it's a Motorola radio and only talk to other Motorola radios. Now it's just like the analog world where anybody can bring in radio a and talk to radio bait, and they wanted to make sure that the air interface was common and they all spoke the same language. This also, these ascribe her data. Peripheral interface. Now, this is the data network that's acceptable via an accessory plug on the radio. So what would you be able to plug into success replugged that you may be able to plug in something like a laptop or maybe an officer as wearing about a body camera that would rebroadcast live over, you know, the data our for some reason, you can have a officers, personal GPS on there. So every time he transmits that he's got a GPS on him. They know where he's at maybe something as a safety device where every time it officer removes his gun from the holster would then make contact and the radio would then dispatch out for him that his gun was removed from the holster. Okay. So it's these kinds of things that there's a. There's a standard on how excess Sary's are going to talk to the radio and then go out over the network, right? Because obviously Glock isn't making, you know, radio components or whoever it is at has the gun holster triggers, and you know garment wherever else may be out there as using GPS. I'm just throwing those names out there because they're common names. The next part number three is the fixed station interface. Now,.

"School dot com slash session fourteen. So if you miss them, don't worry about it. You can go back to the show notes and you can take a look at them as down there as well. We'll also have them eventually in the glossary of the scanner school dot com website which can be found on the very top, the webpage, it'd be linked to glossary up there as well. So the the VO coders that are in place are designed by Devi sl and licensed by devious art. And that's one of the reasons why there's a price difference between an analog scanner and a typical scanner also why some of the digital paging like the g. four g. five by unification are a bit more expensive than their analog cousins and as well as in the to wait network because you have to license the VO coder and there's. A fee on that. So the manufacturers and pushed the additional cost onto the consumer. So what are the building blocks of a p twenty five network? So you understand where talking about a digital network, it's not as simple as a repeater that just takes analog and retransmit retransmit s- it. There's a lot of little components when she's a little components as a lot of blocks that make up the structure of a p twenty five infrastructure. Now, the p twenty five spec says that there's eight open interfaces that make up a el-ahmar or land mobile radio system, and it's open interface because that means it any.

"Again this really is an using um and he kinda or could be using some sort of voters system or raw or something like that but that's just another way that you can increase because every peter wood the and be independent but yet network together so in one repeater sick an east and repeater would receive you it would be sent over our afrah mike wave jessica voter uh to the other repeaters in the same network and they were all rebroadcast you at the same time so remember simplex point two point do plaques using two frequencies one to receive a one to transmit and a repeater where you transmit on the repeaters receiver which repeats you on its transmitter were all the other users will receive your transmission repeaters are a great way to increase the a footprint so this session of scanner school is sponsored by east coast pagers dot com east coast pagers is a unification apollo and swiss phone dealer serving the north american market from one way numeric an alphanumerical pages to voice and p 25 pages they have you and your department covered check out east coast pages dot com for unification g one g four and g five products accessories all unification g one pages shipley spare set of batteries and he spelt spare bell clip orgy foreign she five orders will ship was bell clips complimentary programming of you departments dispatch of fire grounds are included you can contact east coast pagers dot com for a custom quote for your department that east coast pagers dot com.

"They can use microwave or other kinds of wire links sometimes you for it to his e and m link or echo and mike links so many times the dispatches base station will be sent to the repeater system via a link as well since the repeater is at this point getting their input from the voter panel of over some sort transmission path the base station is wired and the exact same way but if the voters system should ever fail many repeaters have the ability to fall back to its own local receiver at you know just in case so voters are a great way to fill in coverage gaps so for example you could ever appear in the middle of the county and you'd have voters or receive sights on north south east and west dent then he kafelnikv gaps at northeast southeast south west and northwest giving you a greater densely of receive coverage within the county so who would you something like this let's think about a metropolitan police department that has most of their force on foot patrols using handheld radios or portable radios they could be surrounded by tall buildings making a very difficult to hit essential low can receive site maybe they're walking down into a subway station or they go inside of a building and they're not gonna make it to a central receive site indoors or underground remote receivers sites located all over the the city will help each poor will get into a dispatcher when they need to k swim s way you can use reputed to increase your coverage would be to network multiple repeater sites together.

"So something we will touch on leader in a bit more detail as wavelength talking about frequencies is a good start to that subject now in order to understand more cycles per second you are wave link pass to shrink or compress because you're adding more cycles into the same space or time to think of a slinky or a quilt sprang as you stretch it out all of the coyle spread out how many coils earn a given space not too many extend a slinky as far as you can now compressed sat slinky and you'll see more a coils in that same space how easy to see through the slinky when is fully compressed how 'bout when you pull as far as it can go see as the frequency increases your wave length decreases when you're slinky is fully extended that has a lower frequency and a longer wavelength when you compressed a slinky you have a higher frequency and a shorter wavelength so what else do you think decreases as you frequency increases your antenna you are in ted are four forty six megahertz is pretty large compared to the ten of your cell phone which could be seven hundred eight hundred nine hundred nineteen two hundred twenty three hundred or something else depending on where you live in ten is a small enough with they can be engineered to be placed inside of your mobile device no longer logging that giant telescoping antenna like it did when you had initial cordless phones first came out even your wi fi in tenants had been engineered to be placed inside of a computer so you don't need to see them anymore so what do you think more cycles per second would do to the distance a frequency could travel or remember that slinky fully extended it takes of a lot more space before they compress it's really not that law.
