The silence of that embrace can feel louder than anyone saying, I love you all up in your face. We can find a different way to take up that space. So your heart can beat. We think love needs to be announced through the blessing of our hips or our lips. We think the uttering of those words over power is the touch, the fingertips. Growing up, I was never protected. Only rejected. There's so many kids who are feeling the same. Might be blind to their worth playing this hurtful game. We can never leave a child behind in the gutter. Because you will only leave them in wonder. If there is no protection, we can end up with no direction. But we got a lot of young black kings and queens who are our future. Who are waiting to receive black love. So you need to open up your black arms and spread them black wings. Just simply care for others and uplift their spirit. You can do it silently. And you ain't gotta fear it. We can give black love by opening our arms. So we don't find ourselves alone. Behind bars..

Todd representatives for activision blizzard called the allegations in the lawsuit that california against the company quote distorted and in many cases false. But that's not how a lot of employees feel. No and i think right when they said that they also put out another statement and also some company memos that were generally regarded as tone death by the employees basically just dismissed the entire lawsuits. Call the allegations false. Call the allegations out of date and then you had a number of employees going on twitter saying hey no i worked there. Two years ago can verify that a lot of what in that lawsuit rings true to me. So then you had. What was a walkout in blizzards. Irvine offices people are working from home so they went to the office and as we staged protests in front of the building. And what did people do at this walkout. Were they holding up signs they were holding up signs the recalling out the culture of the company but also came with a list of demands basically they wanted to end mandatory arbitration clauses in all employee contracts. They wanted to change hiring practices to increase the number of women of the company and they wanted the publication of all compensation data one of the primary allegations of the lawsuit is that women are vastly underpaid of in their salary and in their salary stock options packages compared to other male employees. They also on a third party audit of the company's management and hr department as they said in the wake of these statements. They just lost faith in the leadership because leadership obviously was aware that there were problems with the culture that these staffers claim they've been trying to fix and begging to six. You run your essay that you're surprised california's lawsuit against activision. Blizzard isn't getting more attention. People still consider gaming to be knee. Even though it's a multibillion dollar industry do you think this lawsuit will change that presumption. I hope so. I mean somebody who does really care about games and does care about you. Know the game community. I would like to see get more attention and more sort of serious attention. In the way we pay attention to film and television. I mean i just can you imagine if the state of california sued in just pick a company at random in hollywood or streaming company. You know i. It would be by international news if they filed a lawsuit against new disney. Netflix sony microsoft Whoever that's just kind of the attention. That i i'd like to see games because games have that audience and especially i think when it comes to mainstream media in particular you're dealing with sort of this legacy coverage of how things are handled and there is a games media. That does a terrific job. So i think it's hard for a publication. Your people aren't coming to the la times tweet about call of duty. So it's sometimes hard to explain why this industry needs coverage but i think this lawsuit approves laggards coverage. How has the industry reacted to the lawsuit versus. How gamers reacted to the lawsuit. You know there were some protests in world war craft. Some people. try to sit out world of warcraft. But i mean the gaming community. Hasn't really sorted boycotted games in the same way we've seen we've seen television shows. Movies essentially be ripped apart when there is some sort of metoo allegation and it hasn't really happened and the game space who we soft. A french company last year faced a number of allegations of toxic workplace in a number of sexual harassment allegations. A number of leaders were either like oh or step down but the games that were called in question that these people led such as assassin's creed came and went with the same amount of hype. They always come with before. And that's not to say that the people who work on these projects every single one of them deserves to have their project on their livelihood. Sort of destroyed. There's a lot of good people who were these. Projects is just the sort of. It hasn't gotten the same sort of attention or same. Sort of let's avoid this. Let's sort of send a message that we've seen in film and television. Thank you so much for this interview. Todd sure thank you for having. The workers alliance is a group of current activision blizzard. Employees from across the company who in their words are quote committed to defending our right to a safe an equitable workplace. They're the ones who organized a walkout. The company's irvine headquarters a couple of weeks ago and have written an open letter to their bosses demanding. Change jesse and blair from the k. Workers alliance join us now. They agreed to speak on the condition that we only use their first names. Welcome to the times. Thank you for having us. Hi style. I think you just for clarification. I'm blair activision employees. My opponents are she her. I do not speak for activision and say my pronouns are she her. I'm an employee of blizzard. I do not speak crib lizard jesse when california's lawsuit against activision blizzard was announced that the allegations of sexism cited in the suit ring familiar with what you've heard and seen among your colleagues my primary response when i saw the lawsuit was horror. It was so unsettling to see something like that written on paper and the fact that this has been a two year ongoing investigation to me signaled that there was plenty of evidence to back up the allegations that were being brought forth. I can't speak to the experiences of my colleagues. And i also do not wish to speak on my personal experiences either. More than anything else to me. The lawsuit was a galvanizing call to action a signal that there was something deeply wrong with an industry that i was a part of an industry that i loved with all my heart. The lawsuit alleged sexual harassment had been going on and activision blizzard for years. And there was many many instances that they documented. What do you think it took so long for all of this to come out. I think a lot of the times. We get almost inoculated in this industry to these sorts of things. But you get used to. Oh this is just how it is in this industry and if you want to keep going if you don't wanna be retaliated against in a professional capacity just sit down and shut up but in addition to that i think there's also a very very real fear of retaliation that varies in magnitude but certainly exists for a lot of different people across the.

"Switch in your set as well. I don't know if it's really code switching as much as it's like this joke is not going to get to punch line three tonight. You know. I don't. I think we're gonna get this far and then we're gonna have to go elsewhere because there's you know there is a degree of the audience getting race. Stout you know especially if it's a white majority audience even if they're liberal or whatever and so i also know there's only so many times i can either talk about race with some audiences or even just say the phrase white people just to say maybe i could even get away with talking about raised ultimate. I don't say those words as ridiculous as that you know right. The phrase white people isn't a slur yet. I think it feels like a slur to a lotta white people who aren't used to being named and so just naming it feels like an insult in a strange way creates discomfort. I am so glad you mentioned the white people thinking. Because i think that's honestly what people often that audience they were like. Oh my god like what you said. White people and part of it is like yeah like they don't like being named but it's also like it's because a lot of white people say black people when they say brown people when they say mexican people they are using it as a slur and to use it back to them. They feel like is an insult. And it's the only reason you would think that if you were you trying to insult me when you were naming me So that. I mean it's funny because you know paul mooney on his first album race. He's talking white. People not being able to take jokes about them. They can be racist against anybody but if it's flim they can't handle it they walk out of here in in the show. A couple of leaves a white couple leaves right and beginning almost on cue because white people are very sensitive. You have to remember that. Oh they kill me with their sensitivity so sensitive. It'll be some make this they'll get out of here. Let little white bunny rabbits hop out of his mother lady leaving. Now look at it as you believe it or not. The can't take it. I'm telling you folks take. It's funny that we're talking almost thirty years later. It's still the same kind of dynamics like who gets to tell the story you know. Can i be in power when i tell the story. That's a lot of it too. Like when i'm saying why people ought i'm also doing his naming you because i have power in this situation. I have the mike. People are listening to me and guess what allow them laughing. So i'm in charge here after the break. We talked to her about the problem with a poop. Don't go anywhere. there's a new show. Jack you and kim profiled several patients who have accuser their doctors of serious negligence and one of them was tammy martinez. Here's an interview that you had with her. Only thing. I remember after that it's waking up in my bed having cuts on the other leg here here here and and those weren't supposed to be this was back. Surgery stomach is not hertie. it's my leg. Never felt my stomach so it was like i was kind of woke up. Hey wait a minute. So nurses come in a call and for what's going on. You had difficulty emerge in the operating room. You're fine now. And so this is a big survey stitched up really suits or they were stitch yup yup but they had like a frequent map. I'm on there was nothing wrong with this flake. Man what is going on. What do you remember about that interview with tammy. This is a woman who she was a truck driver. She hurt her back. She was on workers comp. She really wasn't getting better. She didn't want back surgery. Her workers comp benefits. We're running out or attorney. Steered her to a neurosurgeon. Who said he could fix it. The neurosurgeon is currently under federal. Indictment for one of the most notorious healthcare fraud rings in california history. The neurosurgeon that tammy got referred to was one of those doctors. He lived in san diego. Tammy gets brought up here While they're doing this surgery they cut off circulation to her leg and they didn't notice and it was like sun. Staff member noticed that her leg was cold in pale and there was no pulse in her foot so they did this. Massive attempt to try to unblock the artery. It didn't work. They discharged or anyway thirty six hours later. She's driving herself. In agony to a hospital in san diego where they tell her leg gangrenous and it will have to be amputated. And this doctor has had its license revoked and stayed and put on probation over and over again if you look him up in the medical boards records. There is no mention of the fact that he's under federal indictment in this giant fraud scheme. He's in fact in jail. I was texting with the medical board asking his license. Still valid and they're like yep sure is lingerie lousy complies with the probation. He's good to which is just mind. Boggling to a layman right. I'm looking at this at the defense table and it's not just the physical pain that tammy went through. She also talked to you about the emotional pain with her grandkids. She's a really vibrant and outgoing and really athletic and active person. She loses her leg and she spirals into a depression. She's got two young grandkids that she's desperate to you. Know teach high played basketball and go play softball with them and stuff like that and she can't do any of that. The biggest thing for me is that i don't have a pond. Mike rank started in. Cranston was three and my little girl was aren't so going through life damn leg at first be able to be the person i.

You were telling us about the frustration. That a lot of lebanese are feeling a year after the explosion. And i mentioned earlier. You're right there when it happened. So how was the city. Beirut and lebanon leading up to the blast in beirut and lebanon like all the rest of the world was of course suffering from the impact of the krona virus. this is of course worse in lebanon. Because you had this. Massive currency crisis situation people weren't even able to get money out of the back right. I mean the banks basically restricted all withdrawal will so there wouldn't be a run on the currency. i mean. imagine you know. You're sitting there on your life savings in the bank. And you're watching the lebanese lear dwindle in value by the day. And you can't take your money out. I mean that's just supremely frustrating and you talk on the krona virus and you tack on just the general economic downturn in the region and it was just it was just tara. Hundreds of protesters marched on the streets of beirut to the residents of the designated prime minister hassan diab. Lebanon is facing economic crisis in decades an economic gut punch at a time when lebanon is also.

"We get into this mass die off since the start of twenty nineteen more than four hundred eighty gray. Whales have washed up along. The beaches of north. America is a climate change. That's affecting gray. Whales natural causes or something else. Our guest today is la times. Investigative reporter susanne rust. She along with stuff photographer. Carolyn cole tracked apply to the gray whale along. Its five thousand mile. Migration suzanne welcome. Thanks for having me. It's great to be here. I'll you're in southern california. We're pretty familiar with the gray whale. There's boat tours devoted to them when they pass by during our winter boater see them sometimes surfers before everyone else describe how they look at. What makes them so memorable. Well they're very large like many of the whales out there. They're not as big as a blue whale but they're good forty feet so You know big semi or something and they are gray which is where they get their name. They often have a ton of barnacles on them so it generally happens every year. They go up to the arctic right in the bering sea. North bearing say up to the chukchi sea and that's where they get all of their food for the year. They go and snack they binge drinking like crazy right and they got these little shrimp and they fill up their bellies and they get really really fat and then probably be. Starting october november they head down and some of the females who were impregnated the year before actually give birth on the way down as they pass california maybe oregon and then they get down into these lagoon. Zimbabwe were they just hang out. It's like a protected area. The water is warm. they don't have to worry about orcas coming in and so moms can either give birth there or a big nursery and then some singles will also come down to mexico. Go to these singles hangouts and you'll have a little cavorting going on as and their legendary for like popping up like face. I kind of like they're looking around seeing what's up and then just jumping back down. Yeah so when they go up on their migration they kind of just move along if it's a mom and her cast a lookout for orcas hoping income nearby but generally they keep their nose down. everyone's all the splash. But if you have the opportunity to go see them down in baja which is where they spend their winters. They are incredible. They come up to boats. They stick their heads out. They smile or they look like they're smiling. You get all sorts of folks down there you get people who go there for the religious experience that the wins bring to them. We had people cried people's sing people dancing votes. It's it's really. It's really quite as it is interesting because usually when we think of wales we think of literally from the bible leviathans huge. Scary things but here you have something that just popping up hanging out with people almost well yet. These whales have been hunted during the period of time. The eighteen hundreds early nineteen hundreds of and there is commercial. Whaling you quote this essay in your story. that whole. Just such a heartbreaking passage about these whale cavs would circle around the ships that killed their mothers until the poor. Cavs would either starve or killer. Whales with devour them and clearly. They got a little bit defensive so they would go down to these lagoons in baja and boats would approach them and they'd be very angry about it and so for years and years and years the local fishermen down by would call them the devil fish. They had gotten to commercially extinct levels but then in nineteen seventy two the. Us got the marine mammal protection. Act the fact. It's a great story. So these these whales. They began to grow. The population began to come in. The fishermen would seem more and more of them in the lagoon. And after that headlines around the world the california gray whale becomes the first marine creature to be taken off the endangered species list since the list was drawn in nineteen seventy-three louise schiavone washington. That actually helped launch a tourism industry like in by one of the people you talk to was renewed for my oral. So renault is the son of pacheco myer al. He's the lead guide down there and he had been watching the whales since he was a little kid. He's fifty six years old now so it tells me though your dad apparently was the first guy who ever pet aweil. Yeah he well. Probably somebody could talk the well. What in done not in the same way that politics because he did in a more like a frowning counter and you know and for example there was like a little toxically. This sort of realized that these whales were friendly and soon intrepid. Biologists outdoors type started looking up coming down to his house in laguna santa agnosio and heading out in a boat with him and of course not long. After these sorts of things began word got out and now thousands of people go every year won't took a picture. It's a boat and the world's getting close to with the muslim open. I can see seven people in the vote but when they get to devote the secret shop was only three people the other four into the mouth of the world. Twenty twenty a year after the off had begun he. He said he had not seen anything quite like it. Twenty years before there had been a similar die off but this this one really really struck home because the whales were just washing up in the beaches around there and numbers. He couldn't remember. We'll have more after this break. Each year three thousand americans are imprisoned outside the united states. Many are wrongfully convicted. Many are told they will never return home. "Her rich husband. That's like every reality star. Ever but tom girardi. What's interesting about him is that he's a legal and political giant in southern california. Totally right even if you don't care about reality. Tv should absolutely care about what happened with tom girardi. He was one of his prominent civil attorneys in america for decades and he took on all the big guys toxic polluters big pharma and he walked away with billions for his clients. Mean people said he walked in a room like the other side got their check books out but he used some of that money to have enormous influence in california politics so he was a huge donor mostly to democrats up and down the state and he asked for something in return for all his generosity from a bunch of different governors including gavin. Newsom jerry brown and that was influence in the picking of judges. So if you're in la and you walk into a courtroom. The person sitting on the bench may go their seat to influence of town girardi. And so i think those two things influence in politics and the influence in the legal community really make his status much beyond just being the husband of our housewife matt. Tom someone who billed himself as a champion for the little guy. The julia roberts film erin brockovich. It's based on a case his law from one about environmental poisoning but as years went on. There were grumblings that maybe tom girardi wasn't a stand up guy he made himself out to be. That's right kosovo within the legal community. There had always been whispers among attorneys that primarily. Tom was not painting the attorneys who had share cases with him. So for example. Tom sued pharmaceutical. Companies companies like pacific gas electric which was portrayed in erin brockovich and he was typically bundling cases that were sent to him by other attorneys so a case that might have had ten or twenty victims of wrongdoing by corporations suddenly became a case with hundreds or even thousands of plaintiffs and that scale gave him a lot of leverage in negotiating massive settlements but as part of those settlements. Tom was supposed to kick a portion of his fee over to these other attorneys who had been funneling cases to him and over the years. There were a lot of concerns. That attorneys specially small local attorneys weren't getting their cut but many people were very afraid to go up against tom. Gerardi i mean he had these political connections. He knew all the judges so well and a lot of money. I mean this. Is someone with two private jets. A massive estate in pasadena. You know when. I started as a young reporter in los angeles. I worked for the legal newspaper. The daily journal my first week on the job. I actually was sent to las vegas to cover this big legal conference for all the plaintiff's attorneys california and tom girardi always had this massive party to coincide with his annual conference. And i just remember a steak the size of a hubcap on a car. Jay leno performed. I was at the table with erin brockovich the erin brockovich erin brockovich. Not the julia roberts and it was just surreal and you know. Tom just brought together. Politics law celebrity and a few other hangers on just in a very unique way and they loved him. They revered him and this is someone who had as harriet said. You know the governor on speed dial so people were afraid to go up against him however What we did find in our reporting is there were a long trail of angry clients. People who felt that they didn't get all the money they were owed or got subpar legal representation from tom girardi or others in his law firm. Tom's fortune was once estimated at more than two hundred and fifty million dollars but now he's in bankruptcy court. He's under a conservative ship and erica. His wife filed for divorce last election. Day so what happened. It all collapsed very very quickly. A lot of creditors were coming forward and saying give us our money. For example there. These victims of a lion air plane crashed off the coast of indonesia twenty eighteen and every passenger and crew member aboard died. And that led to this litigation against boeing boeing subtle these cases since money to tom charities firm that money never reached these victims. Neither tom girardi nor his lawyers have offered any explanation about what happened to the money at the law firm. His attorneys have said in court that he has been diagnosed with alzheimer's disease dementia. We'll have more after this break. Each year three thousand americans are imprisoned outside the united states. Many are wrongfully convicted. Many are told they will never return home. Both you and harriet interviewed a gentleman named jay adelson. He sort of blew this whole thing. Wide open g. It'll sam is chicago based lawyer. And in many ways he kicked off the hastening downfall of contrary and his firm. He had partnered with tom. Giradi in the litigation against boeing for those victims in that indonesian thing crash but we had transferred money to the girardi firm. The money never left the variety firm and reached these victims in indonesia. You know millions and millions of dollars so jay eggleston. His name is on that case too and felt a certain amount of responsibility for where this money went so he had spent much of twenty twenty chasing tom a he and hit the wears at his firm. We're getting phone calls from tom. Saying basically that the money is it's on its way. Be nice to me. A lot of stalling tactics and what jay has told us. Is that election day when he found out that erika had filed for divorce. Suddenly the light bulb went off and he instantly became concerned. I can say that that the the moment that we got really nervous that tom was stealing from from his clients was when she filed for divorce. When that happened that change. Every 'cause my idea was this is someone who very very successful. I viewed their relationship is totally transactional and when she filed for divorce. I went oh no. He's got real money. Problem is firm kicked into overdrive to file the first lawsuit against girardi. Basically alleging that the divorce was a sham To protect and hide assets and seeking the money that belong to these indonesian with us an or fence that ultimately led to this hearing in december of twenty twenty where a federal judge in chicago froze the assets of sorority and his firm and referred the conduct in this case to the. Us attorney's office there for criminal investigation. And if you're watching the real housewives the season that's really where we are At this point in the season that the assets are frozen and this hearing and chicago that they talk about that's all because of jails. Harriet the downfall of tom girardi also drew in the california state bar at. They're in charge of investigating disciplining attorneys in california and they had received multiple complaints about girardi over the years. But nothing ever happened to them. That's right so girardi was sued more of the hundred times and he was the subject of complaints. The bar again and again and again over the decades and the complaints were about the type of misconduct that has cost other lawyers their law licenses. I mean misappropriation of money. You cannot touch client money or you lose your license. And yet he has a spotless record with the bar until a couple of months ago after australian and when we looked at that what we found was that he had cultivated these very close relationships with bar officials Who are in a position to influence discipline and he did. Things like employ their kids at his law firm. Treat them the parties in las vegas. Flight him on his private jet wine soak lunches at steakhouses even gave them free. Legal representation like their own family personal matters anita government employees. They cannot afford to eat out at morton's all right. So after we reported all that the bar unbeknowst anybody set an auditor to go into the girardi file which must be enormous and go back and look at everything from the very beginning and auditor came out and which she said was. Mistakes were made over a period of decades. Nothing more specifics. Now we think that that should come out and that straw the public and there are lawmakers in sacramento who think the whole thing should be public to but at this point the bars just saying mistakes were made and we don't know whether down the road will learn. Did those mistakes have something to do with the freebies. He was giving employees. It's an incredible series of stories. That both you. Harry and matt had been reporting and something that you never saw the real housewives of beverly hills. You just saw tom as characters i go. You know just benevolent older man loving husband and just left it at that but now of course. You're you're kind of seeing this on the real housewives of beverly hills this season but there's legal issues that both tom. Erica are currently facing what are they. Yeah i these. People want their money back. They're owed their money or you know everybody from like the security firm that provided an arms officer. They're passing mansion too. Like many many many clients who never got their settlement money. It's more than twenty three million dollars. And their trustees that work on behalf of the court and they are going after erica in some cases fairly aggressively. And saying you know we wanna know every cent that you got from him what you bought with it when you got it. Under what circumstances and they have indicated that they want to claw back any kind of assets that are in her possession that should go to these aggrieved former clients and you know vendors and whatnot. They are serving papers on erica. They wanna to go through her books. They want to interview business managers. And just say that in any bankruptcy case where you have a couple that are married for a long time. Then they get divorced. They filed for divorce then. They filed for bankruptcy. The court is always really suspicious. They worry that the divorce is a sham and that they're hiding assets by giving the wife all the money and then the husband files for bankruptcy. You've gone after huge institutions accused of malfeasance both respectively as a team the catholic church. Usc purdue pharma private schools. How does the girardi case compared to those. I know it seems lied again. This is real housewives of beverly hills. But there's a lot there. There's been some soul searching among the la legal community at the same time. I think that there has yet to be a full accounting of all those who knew something and didn't take action. And i think in that respect erica. She is the target of a lot of scrutiny. But i think there are others who had information and didn't sound the alarm sooner. I mean one thing. Is that the audience. Our story is different than things we've done in the past. I am so struck by the real housewives viewership day. Just have bowled me over first of all as far as i can tell. They're very intelligent to a one. And i'm not just pandering had ideas about who they would be. But they've turned out not to be that at all We interviewed a guy named brian. Moylan who wrote a book about the housewives that just came out and he said house. Let's fans look at the the women on the show with the eyes of a detective and they are trying to figure out. Who is this person. What is the real story. And the show is one piece of that mystery but they also use twitter and instagram and stories and people magazine stories on tmc. And so erica's story and tom's downfall this catnip for them. I mean they're legal documents. There are public records. You know and they have to so educated themselves on the whole process of legal ethics and court. I mean we could teach america about all sorts of arcane topics if we could just weave it into a real housewives season.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts so brittany before the break you were talking about this pop up event. Pico union. That you attended of people were just getting vaccinated. Who are some of the people that you encountered. Yes so when. I was in pico union. One of the first people i spoke to was eric milan a high school teacher. She held off on getting vaccinated because she thought there wasn't enough research on what a vaccine might do to people but now that she's returning to school right now i'm going to be exposed to more people and they're smart people that are being responsible to parties and stuff like that and our family. There's people who have the vaccine on. They feel it can be free about and from what i've read even with the vaccine you can still spread the virus. You're going to be good yourself. You can still spread it. So i'm like essentially they can spread it to me right right so i'm not exposing myself but i could be exposed some people around some you know when i first encountered her. She was sitting at a table and they were asking her. You know are you here for the pfizer. And she was. Yes unless you have proof that. I shouldn't get it. And she was obviously very very hesitant. I think even when they were going to give it a shot she questioned whether it was actually the pfizer vaccine and double check to make sure your reading your story you had this great scene of her like fidgeting with her pink nails because she was so nervous about it but then she ended up getting the vaccine so was her response typical than of the people that you talked to that day. Yeah it definitely was. I mean these are really the stragglers. It wasn't surprising to me to see kind of nervous energy around people who had shown up because they had put it off for so long and then we're finally convinced but i think a lot of people still had reservations but ultimately decided that this was the best bet so back to the experts and you mentioned earlier. Kaiser health news What do they another folks. As the best way to get those latino stragglers of people who haven't gotten the vaccine what should be done to get vaccinated. I think definitely a lot more conversations in the community. Like bringing the vaccine to the people i think is one of the most effective ways is what i'm hearing you know. I talked to. You know a professor who was telling me that she's done webinars and she's getting still questions from people and a lot of latinos were impacted. Really hard by cova did a lot of them already had it so in some of their minds. It's like why already had it. You know. I don't need to get vaccinated. I heard that a lot at the vaccine clinic. I think there needs to be more conversations around. We don't know how long that immunity lasts like it's better to just get vaccinated regardless of whether you've had co bid so i think those conversations i think people are still on edge a little bit like is there a you know access whether that's bringing it to companies to factories to places where people work to try and get them vaccinated. I think it's just gonna take more out of the box thinking i it seems to be the no shaming at all just all reaching people to wear their instead of saying no. How dare you. How dare you not take the vaccine. Yeah i think it's so much easier to shame people and to fit into right. everyone off is just. I'm quoting this like idiots. But i mean it's harder to do the work to actually talk people through their fears. Talk them through. What's going on. Because i interviewed people. It was so fascinating to hear telling me i watch. Tv seon and i saw someone talk about how he waited and was on the fence and then got the delta varian and this one woman told me like. That's what got me like. That's what made me change my mind. Because i was waiting. I just have been on the fence going back and forth about what to do and her sister's kids had been sharing misinformation around the vaccine. And so that's another huge barrier that we need to take into consideration. I'm sure your family got this. I wrote about my dad where they hear it from lincoln padre a friend saying oh no you know. You're going to die if you get the vaccine. So what are experts saying specifically about fighting that misinformation right. I mean this is coming up a lie. Or you know if i get the vaccine. I don't want to be zombie. that's when i was hearing also when i was at this clinic. I really think it's having more again having more conversations especially from someone who is in the community like community clinics hospital workers like this professor. You know i spoke with. She's not the not too and so she's like i do these webinars. I do them in spanish. I have these conversations kind of challenging that misinformation. She was saying some of the things that had come up. One of them was about a chip. You know which. I had heard actually from my uncle. My dad yeah. And so. While i was at pico union. That's exactly what i saw One of the people. I talked to was jennifer virginia october. So i knew it something real but i kept thinking like okay higher hot at. What's the point of me getting a fiery hot like. I have the antibodies for. But then i started to feel a little bit sick two weeks ago and then so did my family and then i thought to myself like i'm tired of being scared and wondering if it's covert or not so i might as well just thoughts needed to avoid that and just feeling like okay if you're sick it's because you're sick. It's not because you have copay. No that was part of it too. It was interesting talking to jennifer because she was you know on the younger side. She was like twenty seven and those are some of the ones where we've stalled on getting younger people vaccinated and so it was fascinating kind of hearing from her and what had changed her mind because i think her mentality is kind of the same like i had co bid and kind of holding off and feeling like i'm safe like i have. Antibodies have immunity. And so that definitely is one of the things that was coming up and she had decided to wait.

"On it and it has a beautiful rich green leaf and a gorgeous red flower but the plants out. There didn't have much of any of that and as we were walking through checking on them at one of his study seis. He saw a nest about the size of a basketball made with twigs branches. Whatnot that was built into the base of an it. Oh and jim stood there and he wondered about this. And what could it be. He was thinking of drew and he looked all around and he saw that cactus was dead. Which as we know. It doesn't need much water. And he said this is the kind of that a threat would build. And i've never seen them. Maybe once he said in his lifetime in decades of research built into an okapi on. Why would rat do that because it's dying of thirst and of heat and built itself a little bit of shade tree thinking that it might survive of ever. There was a drop of rain. It could live another week so we wondered around saw two or three more of those and he said you know what there's the cascading effect these ot or dying and the whole ecosystem is impacted. Because what happens every year. Is that hummingbirds and mexico. Crossed the border. They come north. They're migrating and one of the greatest food sources in that area of california is oh katito. Nectar and without those okra blooming. It means that the hummingbirds might not come without wildflowers. It means that seeds won't be cropped. They won't be there for birds. They won't be there for rodents if there aren't enough rodents than there won't be snakes. There won't be hawks that are feeding on the snakes and the rodents so this cascading effect is unfortunately the theme of the story that i did in the reporting that i did out there in the desert with jim. It's pretty gloomy. Yeah i have to say. I had to stop reading your column. "Without further ado. Thank you lucy. Liu for joining us today. What an introduction. Thanks ladies. i think we're both wondering how do you feel about beyond saying your whole name in a song. It's pretty special. I guess the last name rhymes with almost everything makes it makes it easy to be in a song lyric all. I mean we're talking about the song. Your poll name is in this song about being an independent woman. What people might not know. Is that your offscreen. Life really embodies that spirit in so many ways as an actor director producer. Imus visual artist. Where do you think that independence comes from. I'm not quite sure. I think it was born with it. i've always felt this wonderful urge to explore and be free. And i really loved the idea of having that freedom creatively and as a woman as a mom. There's something very freeing out that curiosity and of course i love having people around me all the time and exploring that but there's something about it that just makes it super special and it wasn't something that i intended on this path going on but it's definitely changed the course of how people view me That the sort of the choices that i made. I'm wondering if there's like a story or a moment from your childhood even that either you remember or maybe has been told to you because oftentimes it's like our family telling us what we were like as kids. That gave a first inkling of this lucy. That's a great question john. I don't know i've always felt like. I was from another planet and that i was not i didn't belong here necessarily and sort of trying to find my way back home and somehow landing into this entertainment world. This industry made me feel like i was at home.

"Has not always been perfect. And I had a couple of down force in my life, but at the same time Like I made a happy place. These excerpts come from a new podcast called written off. Every episode features stories or poems written by currently and formerly incarcerated young people. Stories are read by celebrities such as this Array Randall Park and John Legend. The guy behind it all is actor J. Ellis. The show is a co production of his production company, Black Bar Mitzvah and Lemon Ada Media. J is here to tell us all about it. Hey, Jay. Hey, Thanks for having me. Thank you for joining us. I want to congratulate you on the show and You know, Tell us more about it. It's it's hosted by Walter Thompson Hernandez. Each episode is in two parts, a story and then an interview, right? Yeah. You know, Walter, uh, is from Los Angeles. He's from South Central. He grew up, you know? Himself being incarcerated a few times and then found his way to Harvard and then found his way writing for the New York Times. And then he wrote a book called Compton Cowboys, which is now being turned into a movie, and he recently hosted a podcast called California Love. That was all about his Formative years growing up in Los Angeles, and so he connected with these kids in a way that I don't know if any other hosts could have and my producing partner rather and Bergman. Have been working with Iow for the last few years. On Saturdays, he volunteers and teaches classes inside the Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles County. And for years we had wanted to find ways to like, Take the writing of these super talented, smart, creative You know, writers and and put their voices on a platform where the world could hear them. And where maybe, you know somebody wants to option their story and turn it into a book or a show or a movie er or whatever it may be, and so We kind of, you know, noodle around on a few ideas, and I had worked with lemonade a before and on another project, and we went to them and pitch written off. And and here we are. I imagine J. It's got to be tough to get people. It's difficult to get people to talk about their feelings to talk about their lives, especially in the face of adversity, especially, you know when you're talking about being incarcerated. Um, facing those challenges. How do you How do you do it? And how did they do it? Yeah, You know, I'll say one of the things that we always talk about. You know with the writers and we're here to get whatever they want to write about and talk about. We usually write off of prompts and in this case for the podcast we use from the heart and that kind of allowed them to really write about whatever they wanted, And I will say, you know, it's such a supportive group. And so many of them realize you know, they they hear their own talent. They see their own talent, and when they hear someone reading it, or they stand up and read it for themselves. You really see this pride kind of You see their backs like, straighten up a little bit, You know, they hold their heads a little higher and and they're they're happy to share their writing and what they've been through and and it's a really powerful cathartic thing. And and we're grateful you know for for them, given us the opportunity and trusting us with their stories. You've you've had experience teaching with inside out writers. What drew you to get involved in the first place? Yeah. I mean back to you know, my producing partner and Bergman. He had been volunteering with Iow teaching inside a Central Juvenile hall for years. And he called me one day and he was like, Yo, man, I think the kids are gonna know Blue from the game, which was my first show, the first character I played and my first show and He was like, Oh, they all know the game. They love that show like they'll know who you are. The minute you walk in the room, and so I was, like, all right, I'll go like you know, whatever. Like Of course, I'll go and You know, I have had folks in my family who have been incarcerated, are currently incarcerated. You know, so it's always been something that's kind of been on my heart and been in my life in an area where I wanted to give myself and and help in any way I could. And so when he asked me it was a no brainer. I went in, and I watched him teach a class and he taught a class. To about six or seven young man. But what he did that day and what I ow does, which is so great is that he used this prompt that they could easily relate to. And it was from Kendrick Lamar's damn album, and it was a song called I And they stood up it one by one, and they read their stories and it was powerful. It was really, really strong. Amazing and just inspiring to see each of them read all these things that they knew. And they realize how smart they were, Uh and that got me hooked. From then on. I was like, Yeah, I have to be a part of this any way I can. At the beginning. Yeah. I mean, that's the thing about getting people to open up right as you have to convince them that that they're not only their story, but their lives are worthy right? And telling your story sort of reclaims it right reclaims your worth, and that's what I think Storytelling is And what when you hear these podcasts when you hear these people talking about their lives. Ups and downs, but mostly downs and getting back up. That's the worth of their life. Right, 100%..

Maybe even let her go still deciding about that when the phone at his desk rings probably unimportant but he rushes back anyway when he sees two eight one area code. He knows it's his bosses in. Houston this could be bad. He might have pushed death star one too many times. His head is spinning. He picks up the phone with some reluctance. As if it's a snake on the other end of the line. Legislators are looking into their energy crisis are beginning to point. The finger at enron california citizens are bit more enraged over the blackouts. Any execs anticipated. Tim belden doesn't need to worry about any of that because he's getting promoted now. Belden won't just run enron's western energy trading. He'll be the new managing director of all energy trading. Nationwide his hustling on the california grid has netted enron two hundred fifty four million dollars. And that's just for the month of january belden is so filled with joy he's almost teary eyed then. He sits down throws on his headphones cranks up the volume gets back to work back in houston. Ken lay looks at the sea of enron. Employees gathered to hear him speak. There's hundreds of them on the trading floor knee appreciates each and every one. Enron is a truly magnificent company and he takes a brief moment to reflect on. All he's accomplished. He realizes that the day will come when he'll miss moments like this. Even though he hates public speaking lay steps the microphone and begins first of all says they should know that the administrators in california are way off base flaming enron for its problems. There have been a lot of finger pointing in the press lately and lay finds it all very unfair people at enron too much integrity to try and quote game a whole states energy system. Then he tells those gathered. That lay can explain what's really going on here. See california didn't deregulate properly. The handle deregulation piecemeal didn't commit california's refusal to embrace a truly free market has led to its present. Embarrassment skilling warn them lay himself on them deregulate fully or not at all. If you don't you shouldn't be surprised when you run into problems and that's the end of it. Enron has done nothing wrong and no one need be concerned about statements. From california's attorney general calling for lay to be jailed. He chuckles a bit remembering a great joke. That skilling made the other day you know what the differences between the state of california and the titanic. At least the lights were on. The titanic went down as lay leaves the podium. He thinks about the future late last year. He made a decision in two thousand one. He would step down and skilling would replace him as ceo of enron as of today. The transition is due to take place in about three weeks. And ron has had an incredible sixteen year. Run under skilling lays confident that the next sixteen and beyond will be even better in march two thousand one in the enron office lobby. He replies but recalling that now. Skilling's fist clinches. Well if you're so king smart he thanks the. Can you figure this out the elevator doors open and skilling marches down the hall with a scowl. He sees the people at their desks in their offices looking busy on the phone typing away but they're useless every last one of them. None of these people can tell him. Why enron stock price is falling. It was at eighty at the top of the quarter today. It's at fifty five. Enron stock price does not drop but now all of a sudden was skilling at the helm it's plummeting and the media is beginning to take note skilling secretary says he's right on time she has the reporter for fortune on the line skilling winces. He forgot he agreed to this. He doesn't like reporters especially since the wall street journal published at hit piece a week or two ago. Volatility in the natural gas and electricity markets will hurt and runs investors down. The road claimed everyone should be wary of enron's mark to market accounting strategy.
