"The Ron Mercer recall. That was good. Walter mccarty at tight end. Sorry. Give me which high schools you go to in Baton Rouge. I went to McKinley. What is it like going? I'm afraid we thought we had a good time in college in Vermont, and then I brought a bunch of college buddies down to Baton Rouge for a game and they were just like, we're so embarrassed that anyone gives us any credit for being a fun school after walking around this. We just looked at each other and go, how do you go to school here? How do you go to school here? The question I have here, how do you go to high school in that town? What the hell is that experience like? Well, it's interesting for me because McKinley is literally right around the corner for bell issue. McKinley's right there, you can see the legs from our baseball field. And then the school is essentially in south Baton Rouge. So I mean, you come out you hit highland, you go right up there, you're at LSU. Going to high school in Baton Rouge is one of those memorable things of my entire life. Number one, the culture of the city is obviously New Orleans culture is unique in a way, but Baton Rouge culture is unique in a completely different way. It's the biggest small town in America. Everybody knows everyone, at least one or two people removed. And that means you're just a step away from being a pariah or a legend. And that's a fine line to walk as a 17 year old, right? Like when you hit your high school, you hear rumors about guys who go there, oh my God, there's widely Kirby. Mark young used to go here. Like, there's all kinds of in fighting for athletes, like in south Baton Rouge, a guy like Darius guy, so I know we're not supposed to talk about but the fucking guy was good at football. There is guys was in the neighborhood of the bottom where my mom and my grandma and them from. But then he goes to Catholic high. That's something that always is a big talking point. There's always a tribe that you have in Baton Rouge. There's always somebody that's trying to take what it is that you have. It's a very competitive place to grow up. It's very competitive town. And right there, you see dreams come true. You see guys that you know from the neighborhood, the guys that you know that the place was like Faraday and west Monroe and Lee's Bill, you see them star. You see them on the news, you see them on ESPN. It's just different. It's a place that you know that you're far away from whatever glitz and glamour that LA or New York might have. But you see guys who went to your high school and then all of a sudden, they're playing for Tampa Bay. Like Michael Clayton, or guys who are like, right there with you, then all of a sudden, they're a star for the Dallas Cowboys, like Marcus spears. So people in Baton Rouge have big dreams. You know, they have big dreams even though it's not a place where there's one specific industry that exists that would make you really want to move there. So in high school, when you were in Baton Rouge and it's kind of a renaissance of personalities around it now, you have guys like, you know, by myself, you have blue sea, you have market spears doing well. You have Ryan Clark, who's not from Baton Rouge, but is a big part of the community there, Kevin gaetz. From all over different loss of life, you see people doing things. It's a place where people have gigantic dreams. And in high school, like you're being told like, yo, you're competing with the guys that go to LSU and southern, like next year you're gonna have to be good enough to take their spots. And that's gonna be your way out of this town. So I love it there. I was just back there. This summer, not under the best circumstances, but still, I still love my hometown. I still love my hometown. I think my whole town over any city in the fucking world. There's also an element too towns of all how they evolve with transitional and population and industry and all these different things. But this after Katrina, it's basically become a city that is forever changed by migration and yet when you're there and I've spent time on non game days there where you're like, this town is almost overwhelmed, and this is just what it is now. Is that like the infrastructure, when you go from one side of the town to the other side of the sound, you're like before the population bump, this town was still kind of stressed. And now this is kind of the everyday deal with Baton Rouge and that that's kind of one of the identifying things about it that it's this town that it's never been kind of able to handle everything that's happened since people have moved. Is that fair? Yeah, well, what I say about Baton Rouge is what's happening there right now is a reflection of what's happening in really cities all over America, which is there's there seems to be it's a tweener, right?.

"Voices, veteran NBA players, you know, sort of the Walter mccarty type more so than the Evan Turner type as we know udoka played in the league, Damon stolen I obviously is a guy that jumps out. When you're looking at just the overall changes, strictly to the bench, not front office, not the team and depth and all of that. Just the bench. How much of a transformation do you expect here from the Stevens regime and all of those coaches that are for the most part now gone basically with the exception of like Joe Missoula to what we have now? Yeah, I think there's certainly going to be a change. I don't think it's going to be visible immediately because I think that stuff takes time with coaching staff. And coaches have to whether you're an assistant like getting stolen or emailed as a head coach. It takes a while to sort of instill your new practices on guys because guys like Marcus smart, they've only been coached by Brad Stevens in the NBA. It's their only MBA coach. So a lot of those habits are going to be, you know, instilled in them and it's second nature to them. So those changes are going to take time. That being said, it's going to be it's going to make a change. And that's inevitable just because for the most part, like you said outside of guys like Joe Missoula, Evan Brad's, there's a lot of new faces in there. And I think that's a good thing because Celtics were kind of running in circles a little bit. I thought Marcus smart's interview with J king from the athletic was pretty interesting. He noted that he was pretty sure Brad Stevens was getting tired of coaching. It was getting ready to leave. And the only reason he stuck around last year was for the guys, and if Marcus Martin knew that, Jalen Brown probably knew that, Jason Tatum probably knew that. So it's certainly was a need for this team to freshen up the coaching staff quite a bit. And I think it's a good thing and I think the dynamic is going to change in terms of being able to see that from a fan's perspective. I just think that might take a little bit of time. And that's okay. I'm going to pick on our buddy Keith Smith, who obviously does an amazing job covering the team and the entire league. You know, he wrote an article he put it out today for Celtics blog about how, you know, if there's one clear theme about this team here early in camp and media day.

The sneaker companies given shoe boxes of money for guys to go to different schools. The corruption around college. Sports is as topical as it's ever been so a film like blue chips deserves a sequel or reboot or tv spin off. I would love to see that love to see that too. I just remember. When i struggled with the sat's i would quote shaquille o'neal's character neon godot to my parents that say mom the sat's culturally biased. And she'd be like ben. "Vegas and all these different things so he had a lot of fun but my experience the park is always been you know. I think when. I came back from college. A lot of people didn't want me to go to university of kentucky. They wanted me to stay in the big east to us. Saint john's and everything like that. But i wanted to choose a different path coast patino. He just got fired from the next and took the head coaching job at the university of kentucky and he came in and i was like man. I've been highly recruited at play for the gauchos and Always and yes. I was a child show. So i was a kid that was molly the youngest kid playing with their own. Hoda kids right. Yeah so back. In the day they had nineteen and under. I was sixteen plan. Nineteen and number seventeen and number the so. I'll watch how people were being recruited. And i'm like how you guys making a decision on what school you go to. Some cats like. Well how much they pay me going to be on tv. you know. then i went to costa tino. What may mean kinda look at him differently was when i was in him he would come to my house and actually talk to me. I said to him. I don't just want to be a basketball player. I wanna carry reface. Used to i coach. That sat in my living room and didn't laugh at me and be serious and to him. I said yo. If i'm a four year player i'm a four year player but if i'm a guy that turn pro you gotta let me go. So that was my agreement with him so he could have been a coach in alaska aware university of miami. It didn't matter. It was just honesty and going back to rutta part. That taught me a whole lot. About how do you trust people you know when you grow up in neighborhoods. You gotta people prudish ross. And that's what. I learned about watching a lot of these players at rucker of not making. Great decisions uniting and I wanted to do the opposite. So i learned a lot about basketball but i learned a lot more about life plan at rucker park in when i was in college. A lot of people wanted me to stay in new york city. And they didn't know what i was doing at the university of kentucky because i signed at the university in turkey we could be on. Tv or go to the ncaa tournament my first year. No people kind of lost track of me a little bit. And i came back to rob barking at the Forty points or something. Like that. And i stopped playing and the reason i stopped playing because as you know both you guys know in certain neighborhoods when you get to good at something people wanna start to hurt you and so you know they get jealous to certain things and they wanna play you one on one. Got these big bets and stuff like that booklet. I still people like what i used to play in the projects. I used to tone down my gang to keep the game going. Keep the game close to keep you know violent guys around me happy. You know says there'll be no beef or no fighting or they have hope of winning teredo so people don't understand that you don't understand that i used to do the same and The reason why do the same as my dad and another friend of mine says something me interested in one day it was like you know what you can't beat us foreign partners You gotta have somebody spar with so keep the game going so you can work on your stuff again. So that's how. I started to ball handle stuff like that when god wanted me to play center. Play point guard. Because i'm working on things you know your meat. I was always got at toned down. So i can get more rats rats and work on things so glad to hear that you did that as well for a lot of different reasons but we did him for the same reason. That's yeah. When i got to that point i stopped planning type of games periods. Because like you said it wasn't gonna be cool. And i wanna issues in you know. I'm a hope of yet. Let's go who man unit. Then you start to realize as you get better and better of understanding how to play in a main of not giving somebody hurt earning. That's why i didn't like training camp. That much when i was in a prose is like i you know or exhibition games. Because a lotta guys come into ned because they try to win josh but they also hurt. She was well. Be trying to get hurt men you just trying to. You know we try to play mandate in stands for long time. We ain't trying to come out here with no injuries. Sort right so you start to realize how to play you know create distance and different things like that. Challenge this this kentucky. Show like lila. These guys does go into kentucky especially in the nineties. The reason they went to kentucky is because of all. Burn right the lineup of guys. That came after you. The guys that came after they're just to see the program you see the legacy of all. The players that they got in the nba is full up. You know what i'm saying. It all started with small bird with a lot of cats. Don't know that you know the so for me was Nobody knew about kentucky basketball. I didn't know anything about the tradition of kentucky basketball. I grew up in new york city and only thing we got was biggies basketball at that time and a little bit of the acc mostly north atlanta georgia tech. Or something like that. I had no idea what kentucky basketball mitt to the state of kentucky. I saw it as an opportunity to start as freshmen. That's not at it you know. I saw a guy who is a professional coach for the new york knicks. And if i wanted to be a professional athlete is to be coached by somebody who coaching the pros blow. I saw opportunity and they were like well. We can't make the ncaa tournament out first year. because we're on probation. It's all good. I'm trying to get to to be a professional basketball player. That was my goal. And i felt like i was going to be a professional basketball player and i can get as good as i can get fulfil potential. We're going to be an nc double a. tournament. You know so. I looked just opportunity and then when things started to momentum started to pick up after that Kristen lateness shot that we lost two and the spectrum. That is one of the best games in college basketball history. That started to snowball you know. In the following year my junior year we went to the final four loss to the fat five and In new orleans so for me. It was like a launching pad for me to see how good i can get and it was all because i wanted to be a professional basketball player. You know and. I looked at it just as an opportunity. I didn't look at his. You know. I want to go to north carolina. A play for that tradition. Though i look at it as i can go ahead and get minutes early and fulfil my dreams so it just happened to be and then he started to recruit guys like antoine walker. Walter mccarty in all those guys in started to snow young there hit us so thank you back today. Both road runs. I when you know you said when kristen leading cause i like everybody else hating chris. Selena was so mad. You may damn side aided the end like you already know we managed fans anyways but this take me back for you like going through that like you know. Say y'all making. His big running terminent ended like that in that fashion. I you said one of the best games ever played. Just take me back to being in that moment. So that moment was you probably realized this. You guys probably realize this and i hope somebody listed all we can enlighten Do basketball at time was comparable to chicago. Bulls the way they try to fanfare behind him. They will almost like the the darlings of gaza every store you everywhere everywhere everything and also a good friend of mine we grew up together on the circuit was grant hill. I knew grant since since i was thirteen years old and we played against each said the aau basketball so we already had a relationship..

"All right, so we've covered a lot, still, not to be covered. Are we all good with with talking coaches or their other things? We want to get to First? I'm all good. All right, I just want to acknowledge that Brad. This could be really bad. So we'll know and and look it shouldn't it shouldn't go on. Said it should go, you know, ultimately feared and and not hope for but definitely should not go unsaid as far as the coaches. So it's interesting and everybody Under the Sun is rumored to be, you know, in some way or another link to this job, right? I mean, and and there are sort of for me and I'm trying to think of the best way to from it, but there are three different categories of coaches and and maybe you would identify a Jared or even a different way, but I'm, I'm classifying it this way. There are three different categories of coaches, home of the names that we've heard, there's, you know, a Chauncey, Billups Sam, Cassell Jason, Kidd Juwan Howard. You know, that kind of Coach, there's the gem, Jerome Allen Scott Morrison, Kenny Atkinson Terry Stotts, Steve Clifford J, right? Who I don't think it's going anywhere that kind of coach and then of course I think another category and not because they're less than or something stupid like that they're just another category Kara Lawson and Becky Hammon doesn't make them any less likely to get the job. They're just a different category because we Ever seen a female head coach in the NBA has to happen before. Doesn't mean it won't happen. Certainly will happen at some point could happen. Now Brian Scalabrine, believes Kara Lawson will be that person for the Celtics but a different category from those others. I don't know. And I'm curious what you think on this Jared and Evan for that matter. What are the ideal traits in your mind that Brad will be looking for a head coach but also that this team needs in a head coach, I have been long, trumpeting, you know, going back to many conversations on this show throughout the season of surrounding Brad. Knauber for Brad's job, just surrounding him with different voices on that bench and and getting, you know, more of a, a Walter McCarty field. You know, something that Evan Turner obviously kind of has not been for this team, maybe because he's so close in age to a lot of the guys that are still on that team. But, you know, like I I have advocated not for kid for a variety of reasons. We can get into em, we'll talk more about Jason Kidd as he's taking his name out of the possible consideration for the Blazers job despite Damian Lillard on the record calling for his hiring which I thought was fascinating in a whole bunch of ways. I've never seen that before. Wage Me either I mean that was amazing but like I'd Chauncey Billups would be a great fit Sam Cassell. I'm sure even though he's not Tops on my list, I'm sure would be a great fit Juwan Howard. I think would be a great fit off. Obviously you know, come thread here, former players, you know in some cases Hall of fame-caliber who have been through the wringer won championships done. It just a level of respect that they command that other coaches don't from players who can look to them and say you've been there. We haven't we're trying to get their help, get us there, help take us off. Is that a top priority as this team looks to its next head coach. Any think so. I think that's probably they want to. I mean, here's the thing is..

Brian Scalabrine Sam Cassell Damian Lillard Becky Hammon Kenny Atkinson Kara Lawson Cassell Jason Jason Kidd Kidd Juwan Howard Juwan Howard Evan Evan Turner Terry Stotts Steve Clifford J Brad Celtics Walter McCarty Jared Chauncey Billups Chauncey

"There are at least I thought I saw a couple of players like that last night where two guys are back talking to the raft and Cocktails gets fast-break poop. It's you know, they're they're just way too much into that. Yeah, it's not it's not been pretty so I guess you know, it circles back to where I started. Let's go to Brad Stevens because we've been having these conversations on these shows elsewhere, you know, every right before the show sent me a clip from Steven Naismith now, you know, and and he's paid for the hot takes obviously but you know, I don't think Brad Stevens is long for Boston if this continues and and the players have tuned him out and it's you know, it's white noise out there and Danny's going to have to move on. Well here just a quick reality check for people who want Brad Stevens gone one Celtics. Just I mean the last several months gave him another extension he's around for another like six years or something like that. He he passed on presumably Not that we know anything was concretely offered but presumably passed on what you know, second staying in Boston would have been his dream job and and coaching the Indiana Hoosiers. He left out and he's not going to North Carolina with Roy Williams retire. So she schefsky it maybe maybe it's just waiting on Duke. I don't know. I doubt it though. I really do doubt it. I think that you know Brad strikes me is as the wrong guy that that wants to get this done here that that, you know wants to finish the job that he started and so I am still a believer in him. I am I'm not calling for his head or anything like that. I still think if you have one of the brightest Minds in terms of coaches in the NBA, but obviously a bright mind is only going to take you so far you need to be a motivator and Brass post game last night was about as heated as we have ever heard him and I know he has said in the past, you know, well just you know, the way I sound to you guys isn't necessarily how I sound that Locker of I remember him Sat saying that to Gary Washburn wage So, I'm sure yeah, I mean no, he's not going to throw things in curse probably but I'm sure he is yelling at his players and and and taking them to task. We don't get to see that and we certainly don't see it on the sidelines is there in your estimation a motivational issue stemming from Brad on down is there's something that is just not clicking from from the coaching staff absence, you know that that off, you know Walter McCarty kind of caliber. I know they added Evan Turner, but they don't have that sort of like hard-nosed veteran guy that like a perk like guys guy that you're scared of on the coaching staff wage that is really going to like rain these guys in who unlike Brad has been there has been through the ropes. You know, I know Brad's been coaching a long time, but he hasn't been an NBA player through those riggers. So is there something missing here that that needs to be addressed to get these guys in line? I think that's a good point..
