"15 seasons playing professional basketball in Europe talk about that chapter of your life please I got a little lucky I got to admit I got a little lucky you know we were in Oakland's first year at under coach campy We won the old summit league which is the mid continent conference back then We won the regular season We beat valpo that had I think wanted like 5 or 6 years in a row And I still had one of your eligibility but I just thought at the time the bosman rule was coming into consideration The bosman rule was that anybody with a European passport doesn't count as a foreigner So for example an Italian team could have two Americans and two European players on roster So you had to have you could have two Americans or non Europeans To Europeans and the rest had to be tight So while we were coming off a really good season I had a Bosnian passport You know I had a Belgian passport so I got a great offer to go play in Italy And I ended up signing with probably the best team I could have because it was full of vets Walter berry you know was on that It was his last season Like a Croatian guy just a lot of vets that taught me what it was to be professional and what mistakes not to make And it was a really phenomenal season Italy played there one more no and then after that I just went to Belgium transferred to Belgium because my wife who I had met at Oakland got a teaching job at in Belgium And so we were really lucky to be able to combine her career and teaching as well as 14 more years of basketball after Italy So my I guess my career was always a role player I never really had that much talent I just really knew what it was like to play on championship teams And can't be really educated me that way I give them a lot of credit on learning what it is plus my first year with guys like Walter berry what it is to play it What championship coaches are looking for And so I saw that it was much more advantageous to be a role player on championship teams than be a star player on crappy teams And that's the story of my career Your life at that point was fantastic Yeah Let's go to March 22nd 2016 God had a different plan for you tell us about that day please Yeah when I retired from basketball with two buddies of mine we started a little company called key motion And it was the world's first automated video production system And so you could it was a coaching tool It was a marketing tool You could live stream a basketball game 100% automatically No cameraman no operator And we had just opened offices in New York So I was at the airport waiting to catch a flight I was about to catch a flight From Brussels back to New York And right when I'm at the ticket counter and right when they hand me the boarding pass a Bond goes off about say 50 yards behind me And I feel the explosion and right away I knew that it was a lot of was in the news you know there was a lot of attacks during that time throughout Europe And right away I knew it was a terrorist attack And so my first instinct was not to run towards the exit because I thought they were going to come in with machine guns and everything I decided to run towards passport control Where I knew that there were police officers that were there And so unfortunately I ran straight towards the second terrorist And when he detonated the bomb I was about 5 yards 6 yards away from the second bomb That practically blew both my legs off While trying to flee you know the first bomb I got caught in a second one which radically changed my life In that moment Your wife Sarah your two daughters were back in Battle Creek They were expecting you in a couple weeks for Easter You're laying there your picture of you laying there when all over the world what were your thoughts your focus how did you survive those first few minutes Yeah it's a question that still comes up You know it's one of those challenges that life gave me of trying to dissect what made me what gifted me the survivor to be a survivor not a victim A victim is someone who after a challenge becomes less And a survivor is someone who overcomes a challenge Who may be changed forever but who overcomes it And the bigger the challenge the bigger the lesson So it may sound crazy but I was fortunate to have a dead woman right next to me So two seconds after I came to after the second there was a dead woman that was next to me And I realized I think that's where the real blessing was Was in an instance I realized that this dead woman was a victim You know she had no choice to survive Her journey ended there But I actually survived the bomb I was still alive So in that very moment instead of being a victim of a bombing attack I was a survivor of a bombing attack And it gave me a completely new perspective on the challenge that lay ahead of me which you know I was bleeding to death and I had to find ways.

"The game on react is We have that with bill simmons. So check out the bill. Simmons podcast where he and i do about two hours going over game one and some other stuff as well. So there's i could still do a little bit more on it. But considering i think i just finished taping it eight hours ago I don't know. I don't know that there's a lot there so i actually want to do something a little bit different today with the name image and likeness news a weekend. What is it Who can we talk to about it. And we have three guests that i mentioned off the top. So we're going. Just try to learn more about it. Educate ourselves Educate myself as well and kind of talk about it a little bit. Because there's there's something with this week's open that i did want to get to and i've thought about this for a while and there's a combination of some of the things that i brought up in the past but the name image likeness stuff comes out. We see guys tweeting out. Deals left and right Some of it i think is really lucrative. Some of it. I think is just getting the attention of hey i played too small school in. Somebody's hooking me up with some sweatshirts. But i can now get that kind of stuff so whether it's real money that's going to impact your life at college or maybe your family's life back at home or just something cool. This all feels very positive. It does but the lead up to. It wasn't necessarily always positive guy now. I think it's pretty clear in society. We have a hard time with different generations. We have a hard time when we were younger with other people and certainly as i veer towards being older. They're more and more times. Run like okay. Am i anti this because of what it is or my anti this because of an age gap but i think i've been guilty of both at the same time. I think a lot of us a lot of us have a hard time when we hear about the youtube kid. Making twenty million dollars year just like what like that kid of stupid videos makes twenty million a year you know and then we kind of revert and do a like a michael jordan victim. Kids moment which is probably wrong to feel that way but at least i'm admitting that it happens sometimes i think some of you would admit it as well but i don't know if that's what carries over some of the pushback to the name image likeness stuff that we've had whether it was people debating it people saying it should never happen. College coaches want control of everything. Hoping it never happens and now that it's happened kind of making fun of some of deals. I think for the most part the media on social media. It's been received very positive. But as we've learned time and time again social media is a small sampling of a of an audience. That isn't exactly telling you what's really going on. It just happens to be that audience. So i think it gets back to something that i've always noticed as somebody that was both a college sports fan and then somebody who's covered college sports or longtime is that we've always been kind of obsessed with the education of strangers right. We really care about the educational level that athletes reach even though we're never going to be these people and dig about that like that comes from selfishness right so i don't know that the name image and likeness pushback is because the selfishness. Maybe we'll get there but whenever it was just somebody leaving school earlier. Whenever i hear broadcast and seventy say this guy needs to go back to school or this guy should stay in school or you should be. You're sitting there thinking to yourself. Like do i really care about this. Kid's credits do i care. If he's a little bit closer to that major or do i just want him on campus so my team has a better chance to win. And it's almost always the second part of it but it's wrapped in the paper of education. Which again seems pretty self motivated now with these things whenever we have something new in sports something that changes what we've always been used to. It's resisted it just is. I mean we've done this historically for decades whenever it comes to anything that's going to happen. That's new whether it's the first guys trying to come out of high school right in the nba for hardship The aba that kinda got involved in all of this in change things around in the nba. It wasn't so much now about protecting college basketball or the education. It was just hey we now have to compete with the aba. So different things happened and then nobody got drafted high school forever. Then kevin garnett came along that people. Like oh i don't know. Is he really ready. He's a hall of famer. And then a bunch of guys came out of high school and arguably had a lot of these top players. The league were straight at a high school and this is actually of shocking considering the nba and the decisions. They've made over the years but from an image of perception standpoint. They made a change to go back to one and done so the kids were actually going to college which actually made more of a mockery. The situation that just having kids come straight at a high school which is what we're going to be going back to fairly soon but the high school stuff go back and look it all up. A lot of stuff was written. This isn't right. it's just kids. We have a hard time giving young athletes the opportunity because we feel like they have to pay their dues because a lot of us have to pay our dues but what we do is in his special and most of us are never as good as any as these people are at their industry Whether it was the one and done stuff high school stuff or kids just leaving early. In general as i mentioned you know how rarely i'll ever hear anyone say now for players coming out in football or basketball that you actually don't hero. He needs another year of seasoning. You're going to hear it. People used to say it all the time. When i was younger. And we're talking about guys that had been in college for three years though you know to come back for senior year and we'd all just kind of agree like giannis comeback. I remember being mad. That walter berry left saint john's after sophomore year. He scored twenty three and eleven and was the wooden award winner. I and i was engaged to come back. And maybe it'd be come back. His nba crew would have gone better. I don't know. I don't think that that's that's fair or not. But we don't hear it. I mean i remember interviewing john carter. Who when he was a freshman at penn state under joke journal. He had forty two carries in nineteen. Ninety-two could john. Carter wanted to transfer. He told me this when i sat down with. Sounds like yeah. You didn't play much because yeah joe joepat. Had this weird thing about freshman. It was like a forty two carries a nineteen ninety-two the number one. Pick in the nfl draft in one thousand. Nine hundred five freshman quarterbacks forever can get out on the field now. they're winning heismans. Is this weird thing in baseball. Were you needed. Minor league seasoning year a single year. Aa maybe at bats at aaa. And then maybe maybe you're ready and for the most part if you're really special coming out of the draft especially with the year two in college we're talking about guys. Spending maybe year the miners. It could be up at the end of the year and baseball used to resist that forever. Hell baseball and some baseball fans for those of you. That depends on what your age ages. You either remember it because you felt that way. Your father did but people thought free agency was going to ruin everything. People looked at curt flood is as an enemy to sports so we like disruption in tech and other industries we don't like disruption in sports we never have but then the disruption happens and for.

Some ways more profound. Some of us in small corners of Society. But what gives you meaning? You can be retired and have purpose. Might be your roses. What's wrong with that? It might be. Mentoring. It might be helping a family member through a tough time. It might be that Your daughter can't go to work unless you keep her kids and you love having the grandkids. But it's also worked. But it gives you purpose to know you're helping her get on her feet. And you're helping her with her career. You're helping her balance her life because if she had to stay home, she couldn't build that career. I'm sure you enjoy some of it. But some of the time you feel pinned that's purpose. Horace is 87. Do you know all their names? Not pretty much pretty much unless I get a new client and I pretty much know who they are. And they called me and I know nothing about The bone. When the phone rang. And she would tell me he was he was scammed the system, and she said that he would have meals on wheels delivered to his house. And this guy had more money than anybody. But that way you didn't have to pay for food. All right. Well, yeah, well A lot of people beat the system. Yeah, so so and a lot of people needed a lot of people needed to know. The only negative thing was mike had written a line for my character right after. I say to robert wagner. You have seventeen sir. I said the book says not to and director jay roach love that line. And so in the looping sessions we went over it like for a half an hour he said. Now say it as if you guys are in league with each other. Okay now say it as if you know. The book is your bible and whatever and he made me say like twenty different ways and then at the screening. He came up to me in the lobby before we saw the movie. And he said hey. I want to tell you something to cause. I don't want you to get surprised. And he goes. I had to cut out that line. And i went. Oh why and he just goes well. You know when we were editing we realize that we needed a straight man on the scene and it had to be you and outline was like just to out there. You know So there was this great line. "John's he came up to my school every single day. Trying to change my mind about coming to. Kansas and i was all set to go to john so i told him in a nice way. Hey listen i'm going to stay home. And play home in front of my family and friends is not impersonal. And once he became the coach of san antonio it was almost like you know hindsight's twenty twenty. He was like well. You know walter You didn't come to kansas though. Maybe we gotta trade. You and i said that's fine too. Yeah right a lot of people. Don't know that story. But that's the story behind larry brown and lee once he got the san antonio the head coach. But you know it's weird because you trade a guy that's leading score. I i never understood that. Yeah yeah that's that's a little strange walter exactly well things like that crop up in in the world basketball and You dealt with it okay. But why did you move on to europe. I think you're with a good fit for me. You know i wanted to try something new to. Nba was great and there was fantastic. But i wanted to try something new. A team came and off of me. Deal to come there and i decided to try and you know would expect it to come back and play back in the nba. But once i got to greece of italy and spain. And i'm good places i play. I decided to disband. Finish my career out there and you had great success there didn't ya. Yes i mean you know it was. I almost twenty five to thirty points every game. Who is the best coach that you played with throughout your career well. An nba by best coach was Bob weiss at san antonio spurs that was one of my best poses ipad in the nba. Don cheney was pretty good also. But if i had to give anybody was it was bobby weiss and of course coach lou in college. Of course it was carnesecca and my junior college coach..

All right. Has dug up. The game where you made your one three points in your NBA career. Now what year do you think it happened? Guess the date nineteen eighty five I would say February thirteenth K you're off by more than a year. It was December twenty ninth nineteen eighty six oh plow gonna do who you were playing four to December in nineteen Eighty-six, the Spurs, you're playing for the Spurs. You're right. It was a game in Utah new it. Do you remember if you wanna lost the game, we lost sight? Record. God one. Oh, nine to one. Oh, one drop your record. Two seven and twenty two. Now eleven guys played in that game for your team including you, you did not start. You came out the bail. How many guys can you name on that scene in koneohe team? All right. Johnny moore. Alan robertson. Johnny Moore's wrong. He did not play joining. Okay. Well, I knew us on the team. So Roberson did plow. Robertson me artists. Gil more, Mike Mitchell. David Greenwood two guys that you started. You've named three of the starting right, Gail know Mike, gale strike to Michael. You've named three of the starters, the other two starters went on to become somewhat successful coaches. One was a former NBA head coach. I think he's an assistant now and the other one is longtime college coach who's coaching right now did well in the tournament. Johnny, Johnny doc, used to call him chicken hawk, the chicken hawk and fog on a little chicken chicken hawk. All right. One imagine why the other one he matter of fact this game was in Utah, he would later go on. He doesn't anymore, but he would later go on to coach the jazz head coq au, Bobby Weiss. No no all of head coach. Oh, Ticor corden type. Mentioned Mike Mitchell passed away years ago nother another guy played one only played one minute was in all American. With Chris Mullin at Saint John's wait. A minute was Ed Neely team to new Larry christova Christo, actually. The only two you're missing one thing. John's with with one minute was probably a rookie on this team. Oh, Walter berry, Walter berry. And then there was a guy. I've never heard of this guy. Anthony Jones, Anthony. But I got about him and Johnson's. Grew. Why you were talking to me. John Wheeler with no NBA team in Saint Louis who do we watch? We watch Mizzou. I Johnson volt was on the eighties Mizzou teams that I paid ten. Yeah. He's a good shooter that Utah team shooter. John Stockton off the bench. He wasn't starting threat. He was behind Rickey green. Right. Right. It was raking Rini Kelly Puka with Carl Malone, Bobby Hansen and you remember the center you probably had to guard him. This is the biggest human being eaten. Yeah. Now how Lewis my numbers game? You scored fifteen points coming off the bench. What am I shooting numbers seven fourteen? Okay. That's acceptable. And you in that particular game you attempted one three and you made it you also ahead, four rebounds, a turnover a block in two thousand fifteen point. You're the second leading score in that game behind Johnny dockings who had nineteen was thud everybody can score on a lousy team. Gesture has pretty. Good back, then alone, seven twenty two coach insane into it was he is innocent with Denver. Yeah, I saw mind the bench and was Frank Layden coaching the gen frankly good that you were nineteen in nine they were good..

"High. Jay, how're you doing guys the problem with recruiting and everything you have and Mullins doing a great job with what is being able to recruit you have the top ten schools in the country in basketball, the top twenty thirty players in the country is going to migrate to those schools because of exposure, here's why you're wrong. Here's why you're wrong. I tell you why you're wrong because well, I guess I shouldn't say you're wrong. Let me rephrase that why think misguided right now this team had the talent to be better than what it ended up being. They should have been better in the conference. They shouldn't have been the play in game. I'm sorry. I had enough to out there. Well, I don't wanna hear about recruiting. And they weren't planning on a salad talent is a different thing. You have to get talent second play with each other. Okay. All right. But what point though, it's not about recruiting? Spo- here these kids don't wanna go. All right. So you've got talent you have a couple of of good talent. But these kids that want to go to the pros wanna go to the high profile schools because they're one and done with exposure. And a do I hate joke. I'm Jay talk about one in don't NBA players talking about. No. And look they don't play any ACC a loaded conference like the ACC. This was a down year for for the big east. This wasn't even a vintage big east year. And they were they were three games on during the conference. So this was a disappointing season. You could talk all you want about the recruiting and the players aren't playing together. And this and that but this team in a down year for the big east and one wasn't the greatest conference. They had a bad. You had enough talent to be a lot better than this course salad. Mass Beth, Sal, how are you? Hey, guys. How you doing? What's up? I go back like you Joe Saint John Walter berry, all autumn great guiding I go back even farther than that. But anyway, go ahead. I'm always sunny, don't remember, you're older than me. You don't remember Sonny dove into McIntyre brothers and all those guys. All right. I'm bad with names. Point then John program to me, it's sort of like. And one of the reasons I think, and I love Moen's and even at the coach. And I'll tell you why. Commercial? I've seen on TV. And who is it? The Yukon basketball coach Gino with. Yeah. For the win. A commercial? He tells people that they what this history to your success. You want to know the truth? Basically, I have the last word when I when we get nitty gritty time. I'm the only voice, and that's the way it's always been. But I watch quite a few phone John and even left late, and they got some young coach in astute. And he's walking out in the huddle. Like, I think that's his issue coaching because I agree with your assessment on the fact that he is very calm. He's not a screamer. He's not a yeller. He's very different than coach early. He's coach Willard. But do you think that's a problem? Yes. You shouldn't have your distant. He is. But he's yelling very loud and tell them what the gloomy, but maybe that's just his style is different. See I I don't think the results are good for Christmas. And maybe maybe his style isn't working. But I also don't want to just say, hey, you can't have that style. You have to be loud and screaming and get teased away. Coach early. Did. I think guys are different. Yeah. I mean, look at the NBA you could say the same thing about NBA coaches a lot of them act different. So I don't know if that's necessarily his number one issue. Number one issue is the results. Yeah. No. That's it. Eric in Bridgeport. Connecticut, Eric, how are you? Hey, John F how you doing? I couldn't agree with you more with Saint John's. I'm a big Carolina fan. I followed Saint John's a little bit because I've been following Moustapha. High school days, he was pointing at Sacred Heart, Connecticut. Watching that kid for a while. I think he's a great talent. And the thing yesterday that basically. And turnovers are absolutely horrendous. But the one thing I gotta give credit for her own life. You know, he kept talking about took a lot of charges. And he also question I have for you guys. Do you think is going to go to the NBA and be? Goes to the NBA. I don't know what type of recruiting behalf. So I don't think Horon can do it on his own next year. I kind of think that if he may go to shop he's possible Mustafa heroin may go as well. I don't know where ponds would be projected is he an NBA player bond pond's. I don't know. He's an MBA. I got the opportunity. I don't know if this is good or bad to watch a lot of Isaiah Whitehead on both. All right. And then with the nets. Yeah. Zia Whitehead is a borderline. Yes. And player of the G league player, right? Watching him in school. And he looked like he was an NBA player. He was outstanding like miles pals NBA player. I don't know if he is. I don't know the easy terrific player. Get college player, but I don't always NBA player. Joe and Clark New Jersey, Joey how are you? What's up guys? Maybe six six one. But the guys ranges unbeliev less the thing when he gets going he could shoot from anywhere. About it. As far as tonight's game. I know everybody's got everybody was of course, undergo. Girl king. But the funny thing is said, but you know, the thing is I'm worried. Slow story. So you watch I went out, and they come back delay. But nevertheless. Yeah. For fourteen three games where they could bury you with those threes, but you don't want to get behind fast game. So that avoid about. But who knows these games crabby? That's the thing. You don't know what to expect an also on the opposite end when you face a team as good at shooting, the three as Wofford if the hall has an early twelve point lead, I wouldn't be too because those leads can disobey God, very very quick, very quick. But miles Powell has been tremendous. He's six two. I don't know what he is it the next level. But I know he's made quite a jump this year and is clearly vegan guy. And I thought he had a pretty it. Looks sorta online game winning three attempt the ad against Villanova in the big east tournament. Not that it would have mattered seed wise, what the hell would have been the difference instead of a ten a nine right, which puts them online better off Wallaby. It's going to be Kentucky if they win. But I mean, still you're better off being a ten. Yeah. When you're in that seven to ten you're gonna face a really good team in the second round amount of what no doubt, John and Tampa, John. How are you? Hey, guys. Hey, evan. I I wanna touch on Seton Hall, also, and and you've already touched on it. But I always see I'm a diehard fifty year old Seton Hall fan. I go back to the final four years been going since I was a kid. But I always I always feel I try to be objective. But I always feel like they do get screwed. I want to give you a one stat from the the team few years ago you'd been referencing that team is had twenty four wins and won their conference tournament prior to that any team that had twenty four wins in a major conference and won their conference tournament. Never got worse than a three seat. They were given a sixty that year. Zag out in the west coast downright criminal next year. Here's what I'm said about this year. Listen like, you said between the seven and a ten I totally agree. I thought they deserved better than ten, but regardless you're playing to one or two. Rather been matched up with Duke. I thought it was totally unfair for the committee to put them up against Kentucky. Purpose. They did it on purpose. You know? Yeah. I think. Like those rematch. Of course, they did just like you said just like they put Patino up against the Louisville. Bobby Hurley would a chance to play buffalo. All it. I gotta say though, I would not have rather played do would rather than Kentucky. Duke is an NBA team played Duke. Even like, even like would fairly playing Gonzaga not that they're going to win. But at least like they might be a glimmer Duke, there'd be no glimmer. Yeah. Right now, it would be a glimmer, but it would be very tough to find. Yeah. Well, if Williamson went and Barrett went down, it'd be very difficult to fight though. I will let me add at this point. I'd love to see Seton Hall Duke, they'd be matched up an asset. It would kill my bracket. Yeah. Right. You're not gonna win. Anyway. That would be fun Aleki port. Al. How are you? Thanks for the call. Hey, girl, Saint John's in that one game. Time. Yeah. They also hit a game winning three and Saint John's missed all their free throws down the stairs. Anyway. Wait a minute difference. Molly. How can anybody denigrate the guy he just got the knows more about basketball Pitino job? Again. He forgot you know, what I mean. Three. No, wait a minute. You could say whatever you want about Rick Pitino as a college coach then. And there's no comparison between Rick Pitino. Chris. As a college coach. Hold it. Do you realize? Whatever, you know. You can call them. Whatever the hell you want. Rick Pitino coach in the history of college basketball to win national championships with two different teams. Don't even don't even put Chris. And I love Mullen. Don't get me wrong. Mullins got a long way to go to beat a college basketball coach Rick Pitino is you say whatever you want about Rick Pitino nonsense with the recruiting stuff that happened in Louisville. The investigation. He was in that they say. You know, the school had a fire him you could get on him for anything you want to get into did a bad job with the Celtics. You could say anything you want about Rick Pitino. But there is no comparison between Rick Pitino as a college coach and Chris Mullin, Chris Mullin's got a long long long way to go to be in the same sentence as Rick Pitino as a college basketball coach, and I love Mullen. And I bet you Chris Mullin would tell you the same thing. So don't give me this. You could call the Tino a clown. If you wanna call, but he his point was in its week is that Well, Chris Mullin knows more basketball than everybody. And that may be the case, but we're talking about coaching and just because you know, the most doesn't translate great coach. And so far what I heard from our last caller is a bunch of excuses. That's what I heard. Yeah. It started with the excuses of a bad call the Seton Hall game which was but that's an excuse. And it continued with. Chris Mullin's only been there. He's been there for four years. Dential term. That's not five. Yes. Yes. And yes, the first year he was there. There were awful. They lost twenty four games. They were awful. And you could argue they've gotten better every year, which is sort of true. And I'm not saying you should be fired. But don't act like he's been your Chris Mullin should only wind up being what Rick. Have the resume that Rick Pitino has as a college basketball coach when all is said and done he should only get that. And I'll give you this. Bobby Hurley Hammy coach state last night. He's been there for four years. Saint thank you compare. I here in Arizona state. They were terrible second years there. They were terrible. It don't happen in the third year. He made the NC double A tournament. You know, what happened the fourth year this year he made the tournament and beat Saint John's so same amount of time. I look at the results, and what do you see so to be fair? And when you talk about how he hasn't been there, very long. And I would admit that Bobby Hurley took over a program that has been better than Saint John's at least over the last decade. Okay. Okay. But don't act like Mullins been there for five. And and don't be disparaging Patino gonna go. Look, it up say like, I said, say whatever you want about the guy, and I had my issues with him when he left the Knicks the way, he did, you know, he couldn't wait to get. Leaving the Knicks to go to I guess he went to Kentucky right from the. I mean, come on. He's a great colleagues wanted a great college. It's not even debatable. Shouldn't be a debate. We'll give you a bracket a little bit later on John hayman's gonna join us at eleven we'll come back with more your calls beningo and Roberts here in the mid day. All right. The spring sales.

"Word is I'm not gonna live forever. Even though Acis says that we will nobody does I've seen proof of that. I am not gonna live forever. So every year that goes by the UCLA waste season is a wasted season. So. I didn't love that. But one step forward to stay one step back two steps forward. Dude. But anyway, yeah. But in Belmont beat us. I remember at the time we were still seven and three say, we the Bruins. And I remember rationalizing I think that's a pretty good team. And here they are all right here in the dance. So shout out to Belmont and the temple coach his name is Fran Dunphy. I believe is now retiring so that's that for that. But it turns our attention to the tournament. There's all sorts of excitement starting tomorrow writes every looked at the games already for tomorrow Thursday morning here you go nine fifteen Minnesota Louisville nine thirty one of the popular upset picks Yale issue. King Gail, well because LSU is a scandal ridden they got some troubles down there and some trouble. However, I don't know if Yale really seen the quickness of LSU, so we'll see but New Mexico state Auburn on and on and on all the way up until late night Baylor. Syracuse at seven pm Baylor to to be Syracuse. Who's in your final four, you're reading? Well, let me see let me ask you this. First of all I've got to win at all. Okay, now, but back into okay? But I've got cincy Cincinnati. Yeah. I like doing different things Duke Marquette in Houston. Very what are the seeds on all those do you have the numbers on their seeds? Yes. See we'll do obviously number one. And then give me a minute. Yes. Okay. And 'cause 'cause lately what you get as I said the last two years there's been one seventy okay. Last two years at least a seven seat has made it. Yeah. Houston's a three seat. Okay. Houston's a three seat. I've been sleeping on them. Is failures is Ray Lewis coaching them again. Marquette is a five. Okay. So you not one of the top eight teams even though Seth Davis came on our airwaves, you said that the number one and twos. We're clearly the best eighteen. Yeah. You just never know with March madness. That's the thing. One and done baby the excitement the dance baby. We're dancing eighty you got as good a chance as anybody. You kidding me? I'll fill out my it's going to suck see that right now. I mean, I'll just go ahead and put the four ones in there and see what happens. Whenever you do that ended. Never never never know that but you have to have at least one or two in there. The year for me another year of Nova winning it all as a sexy beaten Mary's. Why not? So anyway, there's some fun stuff in here. First of all we talked to Russell Turner UC Irvine yesterday, and he has Doc Rivers is kid in UC Irvine. And it turns out I didn't realize it rivers all of his children played in the NCAA tournament. You forget doc was at Marquette, and he played twice Paul you. And I we loved our Marquette. No question his eldest child Jeremiah played for Georgetown went to the oh seven final four Austin was on the Duke team that lost to Lee high. I remember that Lehi with CJ McCollum McCollum. Yeah. Then his daughter actually was a volleyball player at Florida and she went to the NC two A tournament. So all of his kids. And now this kid's Sebastian part me Spencer for UC Irvine count says that one's kind of fun little details. So that's fun. And then here's some bets that QB one Lucas found on on Duke prop, bets all these different wants to win the championship. They're plus two twenty which means you gotta bet to twenty to win one hundred. Right. I mean, so they're not it's not a safe bet at all. But wait, wait, plus beyond the gamblers bet. One hundred twenty you bet one hundred twenty dollars, right? I'm not sure spider. You got. Yeah. He nods. He says, yes. Okay. So they're like two to one, but you can bet plus three thirty on Zion to be most outstanding player plus seven fifty for RJ Barrett. But here's one plus twenty nine hundred for them to lose in the first round. Yeah. Mine was just throw you know, if you have one hundred bucks just throw it out there. So all that's getting us ready. And then I wanted to get ready for tonight when Saint John's is playing Arizona state that's kind of an appealing game too. Big name schools and two big name coaches. Bobby Hurley, Arizona state, our friend. Chris Mullin was my guy mulling. And then the New York Post releases this story, and you just you're heartbroken. I remember the first time I heard about Chris Mullin was in Sports Illustrated when he was at Saint John's curry Kirkpatrick with this huge piece on them called just a kid from the neighborhood, and he played on his whole Brooklyn accent, and everything it was all about the Mullins of Brooklyn, like the Mullins of Brooklyn is a thing. Like all the brothers were athletes all the the Sunday dinners. Whereas like, it was like the country of Ireland was living in his living room, the whole thing. Everybody's welcome. In the neighborhood that whole the mugs to on these guys. Forget forget the mugs on the map of Ireland on every one of these faces. You know, what I mean, it's classic Irish Catholic New York, right? And you knew about his brother Ronnie who was his older brother who led his way who want it plan. D one basketball at CNN, I believe well, as it turns out unbeknownst to most people until just this week Roddy Mullin had a long battle with cancer and died this week. And Chris was apparently devastated. I would imagine. Yeah. Ms a close family, and they said it happened to be the same week that he gets a bid to terminate. So it's like it's incredible week in his life is his fourth year at Saint John's three years, he didn't make the Terni. Now, he's gonna make it and he was spending time going would practice with Saint John's picture New York City, and they would go up to Sloan Kettering and visit Roddy, and you know, it's it's really just a sad story known what Molly. And he was only fifty eight years old. That's way too young. Yeah. Yeah. So he said he said he's last visit. He said do you want me to go because he asked him to coach St. Johns against Xavier? They beat to Paul. And then he came to visit Roddy wasn't doing. Well. He said, I said do you want me to go? Roddy said yes, meaning go coach the game. And Chris said to him maybe you stick around for the game or not in Barati said, maybe maybe not. And he was the first he quote from Mali. He was my first guy. I looked up to he was the guy we all wanted to emulate Zola brother, and Liz, the wife said that he never told anybody really said Kristen wanted to be a distraction for the team and the coaching staff, and he said, they would constantly text me an offer. What to do Chris said just take care of the team? That's all he cared about. He loves this group loves basketball, everything about Saint John's for him to be able to be with this guy shows how tough of a person mentally he is. So it's a tough time for Chris mommy's wanted to shout them out man, he says this was a new experience for me at age fifty five. To lose some terrible, man. It's a hard story to to even read. And. Yeah, go ST John's man tonight at six PM. Let's get our get our Janis on big time. Big time. See them play. You know, I saw Saint John's a few times this year. They go out of their games were on TV. There were games. I saw when they looked really good. And then there were games that it looked disjointed and not disciplined. Yeah. So you don't know kind of which team is going to show up tonight. But hopefully, you win one for coach tonight. Yeah. Well, losing seasons in each of his first three years, and you're right inconsistency has been a tough deal. But this they haven't won an tour tournament game in ninety one years. Biggest challenge he's had. And he said this is trying to convince the best in New York to stay in New York rather than come out Moses Brown. What's UCLA? That's exactly the kind of thing. I'm talking about like you got to compete with that. But there was a time during mullen's teenage years his high school career guys like Molin wanted to play New York and Mark Jackson. I mean, some of the better players back. They would stay. It's been hard to get those kids. Sustain New York. But that's what he's trying to do. He's trying to rebuild those Walter berry in New York kid. I wanna stay right here. I think he was Walter berry would be the other name from our Bronx MAC Benjamin, Franklin high school, New York City, New York. Yeah. Yeah. So that's to New York kids. Yeah. Molly. And and of course, you're tied to Saint John's and your parents go there they did. And my parents met at Saint John's, really. Yeah. Paulie, MAC, heart of hearts, USF don's versus Saint John's Janis where we go baby. Wow. I dunno have emotional. Really do because your dad turned you onto USF. And I gotta thank you gotta go where he where he grew up. Yeah. Always feels what part of that. Yeah. For sure written big, Molly at Saint John's makes they gotta be your. They gotta be like you're like superfan for saints. I always in high school when Mullin was in college. And I gotta say Chris Mullin was a superstar even on the college. I mean first off four years of college ball. That's the thing. He played four years. So every year it was Saint John's Georgetown, Saint John's Georgetown and over was tough. Oh, the big east as a conference that his his year off three big east teams made the final four. Yeah. It was them Georgetown. And Saint John's is them not Nova being Nova. In schools like BC, Boston College always had good teams providence good teams. So back in the glory days of the big east. We Molin was like this legend before he even graduated college. Like everybody wanted to be Chris Mullin was interesting says he Roddy, and he were standout swimmer swimmer weird to think of New York City service, but they had to make a choice because in are. I'm going hoops in Mali said the reason why he dropped his Michael Phelps career was because Rodney went and played hoops. He goes fine. Then I'm gonna play hoops because that's where we got to be totally honest with you. I prefer Mullin in these Golden State warrior unit that I do a speed. How about those pincher? How about the alabaster skin of a mulling? Windmill in his arms around. Shoot. The by the way that much shoot power memorial high school in New York City, that's the famous high school, isn't that where I think that's where else underwent went, isn't it? I'm pretty darn sure. Pretty darn sure. It was all always this kind of legend about Mullen to is that he would go up and play like in Harlem in the Bronx like on the weekends not during the season and all the other kids up of play your way onto the courts up there. But they all let Molin could ball. He's welcome the play. And I remember I remember feeling as a warrior fan super excited that we got him number seven pick. But did not go. Well, I remember thinking is a New York guy all the way to cotton to moving out here. And I'll tell you what not only did he do it. He didn't leave until this Janis. I miss Molly in the bay. Yeah. Due to having them around like bumping into amino games and stuff. Yeah. And his kids go into LaSalle and all that. Maybe he'll come back. They kept their house. On the shell man. When the smoke clears. Raymond rhythm to us. And we just kind of would have been bittersweet because we would be asking all these happy questions. And meanwhile, he's visiting Roddy. Yeah. Tough. Well, as an easy favorite tonight. Now, let's go just go Saint. Yeah. It's I think it's on ten fifty isn't it, right? It is at six six PM ten fifty. There you go go Saint John's on six eighty these sports..

"Taking a picture for Twitter NFL, that means maybe Ron Ron Owens jumped in there. Okay. Here we go. Yeah. Yeah. No. It was fun. No, mark. We talked to picture. Chipper during the glory days Macron and Mark is now going to work for K G O. It's great. Hey, we've got Schutte Babbitt to talk in baseball Crowley on. The giants beat is TJ ward. From the forty Niners is going to be coming in here in studio is at the thing, not a forty Niner TJ ward. Is he believe it Taylor? Sal guy owns Broncos who who's a forty Niner guy. That's coming. Yes. Yes. Yes. Confusing your TJ ward awards possibly who's who's coming here. Forty Niners today when we left our post show meeting you said a guy was coming in here who has. CJ? But he never played for the nine Denver Cleveland, Tampa Tampa. And he's a local guy eight years in the NFL, and we'll talk to him get his perspective on the Niners. Free agent hall. Okay. All right. So he is he's still playing or no he's not. Looking for something to do. He's looking to, you know, coming here and just take names and blow it up and show us, the vast knowledge he's going to be in studio. All right. Hey last night. Larry, I always be Mon the fact about college basketball, and then I'll nobody's interested this. And that, you know, all you need is a breakout star how much you catch you that guy last. I cut it all we watched Zion. You lost your yesterday? You you're saying I college hoop. I'm not watched. Watching the NBA, and I talked to Brian in the pre meeting I said Kerry is going to go with Zayn Williamson. It is true. And I go even though he he threw out his I'm not watching college. Because the story of the night was I and you were going to open was no, I if if you remember correctly rod came through with his very, I don't watch college. I will watch LeBron. And then I swear Larry the Brian got taken out whenever LeBron gets taken out or takes himself out more to the point. I flip. People get taken out. Luke takes LeBron. He's taking LeBron you accept not joking. But the hell I want to watch these guys they have LeBron. So then I flip over and dukes of minute in this guy. Holy guys. Here's and behind after the game. Jim boeheim said we have that. Yeah. Yeah. I know he was he was comparing him to Charles Barkley. But he is a greater athlete. I mean, Charles Barkley was had Charles park who was a great basketball player, but he had a severe weight problem while he was in college. Yeah. So I mean, he was incredible. And he even even a fat Charles was it was awesome. But this kids there's no fat here. And this kid six six eight two eighty five. He's lean. He's mean, it's amazing. What they look like when he's on the floor as opposed to when he's not on the floor. He fuels everything. And I can't wait to see the ACC semi. That's the nice. Duke and Carolina dukes the three Carolina's the to let me let me get let me get technical with you when he goes to the pros, which will be next year. See now in college you see that especially in the second half. They were all around him to three guys. He when he gets to the pros. He's got that quick. First step. There is going to be damn hard to guard one on one people said well about his outside shot. He'll he'll be able to make enough when he's driving his he's the most physically dominating player. I've seen come into the league. I can't I'm trying to think who's even close. I mean, this guy so powerful. He's got the power of power forward. You know, you pick your power forward. Karl Malone whoever you wanna pick. And then he's got kind the handle of more of a of a small forward. And he knows he's got a nice little face up game. He's nice. Some they were asking who is the most dominant. College basketball player you've ever seen. I'm too young for you know, I I started watching college hoop with magic and in with magic and bird and that era. So I'm so I didn't see will. I didn't see Al Synder. I didn't see Walton at. Synder? I think he only lost two games. Larry and three years. He'll think he's the greatest college player, but Bill Walton was pretty damn good. I mean, some of these numbers to Walton thing undefeated sophomore year undefeated junior year, they went thirty in both those years and the senior year, he'll tell you. Well, they got a little sloppy. And you know, what I mean at senior writer so to speak, but I would like when you ask me the most dominant college players have seen. I'll go to the next era, which is Wayman Tisdale at Oklahoma. Damn good. Never did. He was for two three years. Danny Manning, a Kansas. Carried them the miracles Glen Rice at Michigan's the axe man, by the way, the X men Xavier McDaniel when he played at Wichita state twenty seven points a game lead the nation, fifteen rebounds a game also led the nation. Oh, I mean, he was spectacular. Glenn bias. Walter berry the truth out of Saint John's. I think that's a stretch to put him in that. I know. I mean, if you want you admire the knowledge the old school people will say mayor vich as I saw marriage went for forty four game. Rick Perry was one of the greatest yet. College players only guy to lead the nation lead the nation in scoring the a and scoring in the NBA score yet. Now, the the only reason I would hesitate muravich I'm talking about dominant. Is that his dad, and I love I love forty four game gear. And that's it. But take a look I don't think he shot fifty percent even because his dad was a coach and the whole thing, you know, look at their records. Larry they never made the NCAA tournament. They made the NIT once, you know, I'm just say, and it was a different era. I don't think the competition. All around was good as it is. Now, how about the big dog for Purdue? Yes, Glen Robinson. You're throwing big dog. The big dog was great pretty who's a great score. How about the L train? So. I was in sack when the L train get drafted by the kings and the key in sack. They have the they have the their rate. They rail system out of the Muny or whatever he's the light rail. Okay. And I think it was John Hank with y'all are always up caller up. He goes to the L train. You know, your nickname is the L train. But now that you're in Sacramento. Can we call you the light rail and Lionel Simmons shot him a look like looks could kill jazz. So no final Simmons would still be serving giant. Hey, you know, we're doing weekends, right? And no big deal. But he's getting gone, but he had his collar up KO VR. I believe the fabulous knowledge, and you would Larry it was like a broken record. He knew I'd see him like at a forty Niner playoff games. Every time. I'd see him. He knew what was coming. I think John it's weekends. Put the collar down. Right. Did anybody in the history of fashion ever, look good with the Colorado? Is anybody ever looked good with the caller I? And is there anybody still putting the Colorado? I think it depends. How you're doing? I do. I mean, if your last dollar wetsuit collar up, I don't think it's good. Swinging long long sharp collar, you know, one of the seventies. Collars, get that thing up. I mean, that's like a horse wearing blinders. You know, you're seeing that you're seeing the horses keep the blinders. So they don't look to the side. You remember with your second knowledge getting into the Loyd. He's now on with David Lloyd weekend guy, say tau, it was Graham, Abeer tau sad. It was. Crandall Crandall James Crandall Crandall always get in their veteran. Who else was in good stuff? But no, you know, I was thinking of when I watched the great Mike lamb had a little run there for a while. Mike. I know who he is lamb. I don't remember seeing him on the air. I'm gonna say the Zion. Williamson again, all the names that you floated out when they he's the most dominant physically ready for the pros where you go man if I had the number one pick. There's no doubt since shack. He's awesome. I mean, I can't think anybody's since go ahead. Brian jump in there. Lebron LeBron didn't go to college. Yeah. Lebron came right out of your going to interrupt me. Craig? Yeah. He didn't know. But obviously, LeBron obviously LeBron, but I'm saying from college physically dominant physically dominant players who weren't dominant player you get the number one. Can you celebrate where you go wild? You know, you know, how they do it the thing like, we're guaranteed. Oh, my guys we are. Now a winner. It's it's an impact on the the, you know, the finances of the city that kind of that kind of get a Reagan in New York the Knicks. Forget Duran Patrick Ewing. That was remastered. Everybody said was rigged. Anyway, and Patrick Ewing. Also is one of the greatest college shack. Yeah. He came out. And that was a big deal when everybody celebrate anyone is looking at this list, though of the greatest college players. Austin Carr, Mr. cavalier at Notre Dame average fifty a game in seven NC double A tournament. I know seriously Dantley was great at Notre Dame. Austin Carr before Dantley was greater at Notre Dame as far as he era. Do you have the years? I think marriage may Bill couple years older. Okay. Muravich was.

"It's. When you put the ball in play Tyler Austin three eleven when you put the ball in play even Greg bird who we all know really really struggled last season. I mean to thirty which is really low for for a batting average of balls in play. But it's almost impossible. It's really hard to have such a low batting average. When you put the damn ball and play to me. That's that tells me that. Yes. Gary Sanchez struggled last year. But he also was very unlucky. I can't see how his Bab his batting average was balls in play is going to be that low this season. I see a bounce up on that. And the other reason why you want I think Gary Sanchez hitting higher in your lineup is give you another number second number. Why optimistic about Keri Sanchez this year? Even with such a low batting averages. Overall, batting average was one eighty six last year. One eighty six. His unbased percentage was to ninety one. So is on base percentage was over a hundred points higher about one hundred and five points higher than his batting average. That's telling you that if he can get the batting average up to a respectable amount. Let's just call it a reasonable amount. Get forget that this guy looks like he should be a three hundred hitter. But call it to fifty if he if he becomes a two fifty hitter. If you have the discipline to walk to take your walks and have a batting average that hundred points higher. Tavern on percentage. It's one hundred points higher than your batting average. If he's to fifty you're talking about three fifty on base percentage. And with his power. That's a hitter that I want hitting up higher in my lineup. So I'm still a believer offensively and Gary Sanchez for the Yankees. I think he will he will be an important part of that Yankee lineup this year. And when I look at a few of those underlying numbers, I'm bullish on him. And. I think he's a player. So if I'm looking at a Yankee lineup top four back to that Aaron Hicks one Aaron judge to I would probably go Stanton, assuming that last year's numbers that he he's gonna hit at least last year's numbers. Maybe even a little better, depending with comfort New York, but call him that. And now Gary Sanchez at four I like that lineup for the Yankees as my top for. Sure, would I love to see some lefties throw it in there. I guess that would be nice. But I'll take that top four for the Yankees and hit and you heart just a little bit further down the lineup. And now, you're stretching it out, and you have some more depth. So that to me that's a lineup. That's top four that. I'd go is if I were the let's go to how about robber in Manhattan. What's going on Robert? Robert going once going twice, Robert if you call back, we'll put you on how about let's go to. No. Middle village. What's what I know? How are you? I'm doing. Well. No, what do you wanna talk about? So let's talk about ST John's. I thought that was a big win. You know? I'm more of a chance and Saint giants fan watching of years. But yeah, see, I'm like you. I remember close Chris Mons back. I'm assuming even back to like the Mullins Walter berry, Lou carnesecca big. Yup. Amy. Yep. You know, but they needed this win. You know when they were down the first half. I. Come back. Let me I gotta split them. You know what? Now get back in time to see the three quarters sat buzzer beater right before the first half ended. I did not. I did not. I have to be honest Saleh's insane. I'm watching us game. They're down nineteen points. I did I don't have a dog. So I stayed watch. This. And I, but I did not think nineteen down they had a shot, and suddenly everything changed when they hit that shot, and they drew to eleven points the energy in the garden, totally changed. And it was a sold out. I mean, you don't you don't get that kind of electrical. But that was a big game there. Then they absolutely had to have this way. Whether they had to or not, I don't know. But now getting it what it does to me. Is it puts them in the NC double A tournament. You lose all your games. I think they are firmly in the NC double A tournament and you win three out of four against the the top two teams in your league Villanova and Marquette and now they're interesting team because also nor and thanks for the call. But now it's interesting about Saint John's if you can beat Villanova. On a day when Shinwari ponds your best player one of the better players in the country has a really bad game very off game. Then what does that say about you and your chances if ponds is playing like ponds where their chances to post some updates some upsets come tournament time? They're an interesting team Saint John's twelve forty when when I come back. How about the NHL? We haven't talked enough hockey. That's coming up Brian Compton. Will join me as my guest time for an update with Harris Allen..

"What what will it take for the Knicks to for us to say it will be a successful off season for the Knicks? Dennis Smith junior. All that. Then coming up in the twelve o'clock hour, become Brian Compton, editor NHL dot com. Talk some hockey. Of course, the islanders office Rangers and the trade deadline coming up that's on February twenty fifth so coming soon the NHL trade deadline, what kind of moves needs to be made. And as we as we look at playoff positioning for the islanders. And then in the one o'clock hour, Zach Brazil. From the post Saint John's just a massive win at the garden versus number thirteen ranked Villanova today, and that kind of segues nicely into topics for you to call in on. You know, that's how I always start the show. So with this big Saint John's win versus Villanova looks like looks like barring some complete meltdown where they lose every other game the rest of the season. It looks like Saint John's we'll be dancing that Saint John's is going to head to the NC double A tournament in March. And if Saint John's and Seton Hall, Seton Hall, some breath tala just had them as last four out some now with the wind maybe their last four in. But Seton Hall NCAA John's looking like they may be in the NC double A tournament. And is that enough to make college basketball relevant again in this? Pro sports town. And there are a lot of you who are college looked at that and scarf and tell me. College hoops, always relevant. You know, what we all know it does not get a lot of airtime. March madness we do some conversations about NCWA around here. And certainly as we get close to the turnament. Yes. But we spend most of the year not talking much about it. If we actually had for those of you who are old enough to remember the day. Chris Mullin the head coach at Saint John's way back when he was a player the Saint John's teams the big east conference with Chris Mullin and Walter berry playing for Saint John's and Louis carnesecca and enrolling mass amino, and John Thomson. All stocking the sidelines that was a conference, and of course, Jim boeheim Syracuse in the big east conference that was a conference. In the kind of marquee players best in the country. Consistently year after year slugging it out in the big east conference. Those were the days in college basketball, very relevant in this town. So what's it gonna take a pro sports town? There's no doubt about it. We're not like go out of New York and other parts of the country college football college basketball reign supreme, but not here. So. What's it gonna take to make? To make college basketball, relevant regular topic high interest topic here in this area is one of them have to go deep. What has to happen? All right, of course. Topic to call in on the Bryce Harper Machado thing. It keeps moving it keeps going it. Seems it will never end baseball. And. Look baseball economics is a relevant story right now. And if you're the players I have talked about this previously. But if he just seems getting worse and worse from the player standpoint, they completely completely choked on the last collective bargaining agreement. Completely choked on it. They worried about tangential issues and they didn't worry about economics. And. To quote, a famous presidential campaign. It's the economy stupid. It's always economics the quality of light stuff. Whatever you can always get those those are the secondary issues you focus on the economics. They did not get a big big enough piece of the pie. And. They they've allowed owners to to do what they're doing. Now. Or is it just being smart owners allowed numbers in analytics and statistics and actuarial tables, accounting, all that to take over the game. And who could blame them if I were running a team, I would be doing the same thing. Unless someone makes me makes me spend a certain amount of money. Well, sure and even for those teams who were spending a ton of money. You would look at it and figure out the best ways to do it and say yourself, the probability analysis is such they. If you're worried about these super long term contracts, you're worried about signing older players now with all that said, I still don't understand even in this era of. Analytics how teams are not more interested in two young players in their prime life, Bryce Harper. Manny Machado because I do think that the next collective bargaining agreement. The players are going to get a larger share of guaranteed money. It's going to be they're going to get a larger share of revenue that the owners are going to be forced to pay out. And given that I think contracts will bump up again. And given that. I think players in their prime signed to long-term deals like Machado and Harper. Are we're gonna look back are going to be good values. And you might think I'm insane. Thirty million dollar contracts in come on. Angering to look back if you're signing one of these guys for if you could sign what? Machado to an eight year deal. And they were look back on that and say, that's good value. So eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six. So the Harper Machado story, of course, you want to call it on that. That's fine. Question is if the Phillies the Phillies are the top rumor team, of course for Harper, though, there's always those mystery teams and things out there. And it's Scott Boris who the heck knows. But if the Phillies sign Bryce Harper Vienna. Least becomes naturally east becomes a fourteen race legitimately now with the Harper and real Muto going to the Phillies. I still would put the paper. The nationals. Probably you put a peg ahead, but you make if they signed Harper the Phillies to me you can throw it up in the air. And if you give me any outcome that has nationals Braves Mets Phillies finishing in first place. I'm not really surprised by that. Anything? Besides the Marlins we understand where they're, but they're four teams legitimately can make a case for for winning the National League east and all four of them probably finishing on paper coming into the season, barring major injuries. You look at all four and you think off one paper. Going to be looking like teams in the. Yeah. Mid mid eighties low nineties went potentially then he can fall anywhere in that range, and we'll pay we'll pay numbers and get more specific is the season gets underway. And his teams finalize all their moods. But. That's going to be a heck of a division and given that given that look we see the Mets, and we see the Mets with today another signing for debts, Dany, Etcheveria or Etcheveria. However you pronounce it. Defensive wizard great with the glove. It's a good depth move. It's the kind of move that you applaud applaud the Mets and their front office for for doing to give a team depth. That's great. But if you're going to do death. I know there's still time. But the position when I look at death. How about starting pitching? Where's the starting pitching depth for the Mets? Jason vargas. Is the number five starter? Are you really super confident that Jason Vargas is a you have a good season and be going to stay healthy for thirty games at his age and with his injury history. I really I don't think that's a great bed. So now, you're looking most most major league baseball teams, you have to know who's going to be starter. Six seven eight I feel pretty good about that. And if the answer no offense and no disrespect intended is consistently Corey Oswal, then that's problematic. If you're the Mets in a four team race heated division, maybe the most depth and even distant baseball. If the if the Phillies sign Harper now, you're looking there's nineteen games against the Marlins and you damn well better win like seventeen or something at least sixteen. Because you if you feel like the other teams are going you. And you're slugging it out. So you need a good solid dependable number five starter or just planned to go is the plan to go bullpen is that it if there's an injury. I don't know. But to spend the money to say to have Brody be be telling us all that the Mets are a win now team. And he thinks he thought the Mets were the favorites in the east. Well. Last. I checked that number five starter is a really is an important cog. And Mets and the number six starters to in the number seven starter is two and the number eight starters to you have to have that debt, and that understanding of where that is coming and right now, I really see that from the Mets. So that's the move is that how problematic is that? How confident are you in various as the Mets number five starter? Also, I heard Jodi talking about the whole Manny Machado embrace embrace. I would agree with them in terms of brace and the Phillies being the most likely scenario. It's certainly what we're hearing is Jody saying the backup for him. Probably the nationals. A team intrigues me. If I were Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, and that is the Padres the White Sox. I'm not I'm not trying to be a jerk here. But I don't know. I don't really want to go to the Y. It'd be one thing if the White Sox were on the cusp of some sort of terrific team. And you're going to a contender to be the last missing piece to compete for championships. Otherwise, if I'm calling Chicago, I'm gonna play for the cubs. I don't really want to play for the White Sox. Not not. If there's another equally good contract out there for me. And if I'm Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. Sandiego great weather and the farm system that is absolutely loaded. Chock loaded chop fill loaded with young talent. And I find that intriguing piece and the kind of contract if I'm Manny Machado. So let's say Bryce Harper goes to the Phillies if I'm many Machado. I'd be given a long hard look to the Padres. I probably maybe. Nobody's offering me a ten year deal. Okay. Fine. I would take. Yeah. Give me an a seventy eight year deal and with a two year opt out I get a couple of years to evaluate. What how these young players are coming along. How these top prospects are coming along. And to see what kind of moves management is gonna make front office is going to be. And if I'm comfortable, then I'm sticking around if not opt out, and I'm still yeah..

"Eighty nine to seventy eight and it's the fourth year of the Chris Mullin coaching tenure at Saint John's to talk about Chris Mullin and Saint John's and a bunch of other topics. We bring in the always on point Mike von Kara from the near post. Hey, mike. How are you? Laura. How're you doing this morning? I'm doing fine. Thank you. The the first question I have for you on Saint John's is. Do we look at the early season and say, this is actually one of my one of my followers on Twitter was tossing out. There was the early season a Mirage because it was such a soft part of the schedule or do we looked at it and say, well, they did beat Marquette. There were some good wins there, which is the real Saint John's team. The team that beat Marquette represents who they are. They can be look very far this season. I mean, different teams have different strategies how they treat elaborate to sever say they thought that it would be a good idea to build confidence Bill that record. And and try and hold back in Belgium, big east, and it kinda did 'cause they 'cause they played very well against doll. You know, kinda got robbed at the by the referee as they beat Marquette. They beat Georgetown and overtime on the road. They had they had gone over, you know, down to thirty five minutes. I mean, you're there was a moment. Couple of weeks ago. They were in the top twenty five really thought that maybe that was the right blueprints. But. I think one of the fears for a lot of us who saw that saw schedule was two twofold, one is that they weren't going to have any kind of tests in December that would help them in January and February league play, and they really did they want a couple of close games. But it wasn't against anybody. A very. A help to them in terms of quadrants wanted to which will help step away. And that's the other problem is the fact that I went out and and rampage the big east, I mean ever gonna not leaving solve anymore forever. Because they really did anybody out of conference except for Duke coming up this week that would really help them in terms of out of conference schedule when it came to selection Sunday. So, you know, I it was it was wonderful. They went twelve out of conference. But because of who they they kind of require themselves to have to to really put gaudy record up the big east as well. You know are different five right now that Cardi record seems like on the other side of the melon, and they really. There are a lot of problems in a lot of trouble oriented for a lot of reasons. But. Favored by the lack of quality opponents say played early on. So you heaven article up on the near post website that I assume for tomorrow's paper on the game. And I'll reach to quotes from your article that you're obviously familiar with one from Shinwari Pons says I feel like is a team we've carded ways we're not together likely we were in the beginning. And then Moustapha Horon said we kind of went through the motions in the first half. What what does that say about the is that on the coaching staff is on the players what's going on? When you hear quotes like that? You know, what Laurie? I never wanted to give the players a total fast because they know what's at stake. And and surely, they even want be. Number games in their career and their season. You would think they would want to play every minute passionately. So if that's the case then. The players for that. But yes, I do take on the coaching staff because this is become a real problematic issue if they did the same thing it's Butler replaced seven or eight quality minutes against bowler. Almost enough to bring them all the way back for twenty point deficit. You can get away with playing quality minutes against say, you're older respect you say, for instance, in New York, you can't do that against the big east varsity the big east is requires. And even if it's down people make a big eaters down this year, and they may well be in terms of what we have to know the biggest can possibly be. But still it doesn't matter who you're playing providence Xavier fuller. We saw with the Paul you have to come and play hard for forty minutes, or you're gonna pay some consequences and right now. Consequential say John plan is it right now they're questions there on the outside looking in the incidentally, bubble. And if you've got some some real work headed them to get back on the inside. And when we think about Chris Mullin, and certainly I loved watching Chris Mullin as a player at Saint John's and Chris Mullin Walter berry and back in those days of the big east. But now Chris Mullin the coach who came into this job with no head coaching experience coaching experience just front office experience you again. Credit you that I was watching it on on your within your embedded within your story. But the the symbolism of Chris Mullin in a huddle tying his shoelace. While his assistant coach is talking to the team. How prepared what does this look about with Chris mining contrast that to Patrick Ewing? An all Patrick Ewing had to do how many years with that? I assistant coaching job back in two thousand three until he finally got that opportunity. How prepared Patrick Ewing was for the Georgetown job. Yeah. You know, Laurie that moment of the cameras captured of him in the huddle. Best. That's a bad. Look at worst, the bad harboring are because I mean, there's been a lot of whispers around Saint John's wart people wondering how committed how existed Chris really is in this job. I mean, he's hall of fame player. And he's you know, he's got he's got this established life. And I think everybody wanted this to work because you know, the notion of him coming home and bringing ST John's back to remember it when he was player here. That was a very romantic notion. But that is one of the things that's gonna that's gonna stick. If people cross because there's always been as far maybe he wasn't completely invested. And and and you're right. It'd be the contrast with Patrick within his own straddles Georgetown is here. Don't get you know, actually because you look at Georgetown. Yeah. Be better near record also. But. You're right. I mean, Patrick Ewing did pay do in terms of trying to become a head coach. I think he's still would have preferred to have been echoed the NBA, but certainly put in years and years in the NBA as an assistant. Be prepared for the moment when he took on this program. Players to where I really think next year that's going to be a special team. I thought no Matt McLaughlin was a kid freshmen who electrified the guard today, and he didn't play in the first day jobs game the patriots kind of caught a break there. Because there. Three to six even more difficult to accept which is probably what they would have been played that first game. It's a it's the thing of it is. Rescued because eczema players share. But. Skewed by the coast to coast has to be able to inspire these guys to play the very best immediately because they're going on a three game road trip. It could really season, and you know. The question to ask is it's you know, it's Chris capable of doing it. I think there's still some local myself that we'd like to see that. Yes. But like the answer that be yes. But we have to we have to see it. They be again, it's the team that did beat Marquette, and we'll see if they can be that same team again, the possibilities there. But. The game is the game against Creighton is is a must win. You know, there are a whole bunch of things I wanted to ask you, but something that's come up as a topic on my show tonight that surprised me 'cause I never even considered it and wanted your opinion is that a number of callers people still upset about the call the horrible call miscall from the saints Rams game from last week. And I know you and I both agree. Terrible. Call ethically bad call may have implications for replay in the off season. But I've had some college. Who said they think it tarnishes the Super Bowl that call and sorted. It's the Rams win. It puts an asterisk behind this next to their name in the Super Bowl. I didn't see it that way. It didn't even occur to me. But before I completely dismiss it. I wanted your point of view. Well, I guess if that's going to happen that you'd have to give the the patriots and asked for their first came against the Rams only because we we we know that they engaged in some shenanigans before that game. They also they were also alive because the tuck rule, which is most circle any sport. On the books. And if I know that Jon Gruden was still still wondering about that. Because I heard I heard muttering his father on the streets of of mobile, Alabama. We get the senior. Any Trask still posts about it online? It's not the world goes through history with a scarlet letter on there. Just because they were the beneficiary of an awful empires. Call me. I mean, look, I pull your family and friends who are saints fan. I married into into Louisiana. So I get I get how passionate is down there. But you know, what? It's not the first time that outcome is affected by a bad referee. Call or not on call won't be the last one. I mean, we've tried to eliminate any part of the problem is that we try to legislate out. Human error. Bye. Bye bye. By replaying the cost replayed that when they're still feeling era that emerges. It's almost like it makes people anger now than it used to because that's supposed to be why we can do all these replay role is to is to avoid things like this. And and you know, it's it's kind of ironic that human element still has such a great question. I mean to me after the Super Bowl they won the Super Bowl because they go to beat the patriots, and they would have done with due to win. You know, forget to call. They went on the road at the hardest place in the league to play a game. I don't care how they want it. They were certainly in position than what? And you know to me. Did they have nothing to apologize for my car from the post and talking about that Super Bowl? I was talking earlier to Tara Sullivan from used to be with the record. Now, Boston Globe columnist, buddy. Yeah. And we all love Tara. And she was talking about this season with the patriots. And how much joy there is that it was a little unexpected with the way things went earlier in the year, and how the fun of it, especially with the Red Sox having won the World Series and all of this. And I thought, you know, here we are in New York. And so the question for you is. Here in New York. Do we have a Boston problem? Yeah. I I think that's very fair. It is going to be our rivals. No matter what. Because of proximity bitter rivals going back before sports because you know, they were for revolution. In New York was pro-tory ally Mitchell to a large degree. So I mean, there's been a bitter rivalry between the city's going back to the seventeen hundreds and that doesn't take into account. You know, the Red Sox and the patriots the Celtics and so on. Sure. Every looking that's city is on an epic run. It is. I mean going back to the beginning of the patriots all four of their their their primary teams have won, you know? Obviously the patriots in the Red Sox won multiple championships. And and they. But we have more teams. How can it be bad this long? And I think that multiplies it because you know, look. Because we have all these teams they have religious with the other teams, you know. And it's it's it's a it's it doesn't matter. What team you root for? I mean, you're going to be affected by the fact that Boston is pretty good last fifteen years. You know, because you're right. I mean, you know, I think part of being New York, it's not just expecting kids be good. But we have so many to choose from. We think the law of averages one or two of them would be good at any given time it really right now. What you have of the Yankees and the islanders. Yeah. You know, the the the Brooklyn. Right. For five. I I think I think it's hard. Okay. Dan, I'm not gonna have delighted that they're playing. Well. But I mean, we just look at the way the MBA. I mean, you know there. They've done. But you know, I hate to be a show me. Stater. But you know, let me see the Celtics the first the playoffs the playoffs, and then I'll start to believe. So I mean in terms of what we want. We're we're getting very excited the next their four games over five hundred. That's that's supposed to be what our standard is. But given where we are now. I mean, it's easy to treat it like seventy three six. One of these days. I'm gonna make time we have plenty of seasons. Still in front of us to really dive into the Knicks and this rebuild and and baseball next to other topics..

"Most people talk about all kinds of crazy plays and formations and personnel. The Rams are not like that. Wow. He may be, you know, again, winning is what counts as a media creation, the some extent. No, no, no. Because he's so young. No, first of all, you can be really good a lot of different ways. I mean. Yeah. There's there's no rule here. You know, because of college football a lot of people now, and I'm not knocking college from what I'm about to say is negative. It's a statement of fact, not not not a judgment, call because of college football with a lot of cool plays that we watch every Saturday people think that cool plays now decide what makes guy creative. You don't have to run cool plays. What you're trying to do is create indecision and uncertainty in the defense and if tax defense where it's week. That's what you're trying to do in order to do that. You don't have to run cool plays. You can line up Shanahan's the same way. He doesn't have to run cool place. You're looking for mismatches. You're looking for personnel advantages. You're looking for advantages anywhere. You can find them. Here's my one question in this game. Do you think the Rams are gonna feature down the field passing against the saints? And I bring this up because you know, cooks has speed. There's no question. He's going against his former team. He had a great game earlier this year Rams do have some speed. But you see I agree with you there conservative. They run the ball and awful lot. But when you look at these numbers saints defense, Greg thirtieth in the NFL this year on passer rating fifteen yards down the field. They're they're not spending the deep ball. Well, then the saints also led the NFL and PI calls this year. They had twenty is. I was four more than any other team in all man, they play autumn, and they tend to get crabby. Can they do you believe the Rams can win down the field against Lattimore? And apple well, I think they're gonna try because I think that works off their outside zone run game and they're run action.
