"A an excerpt from the opera crossing by my guest composer conductor and librettist Matthew okcoin the opera crossing based on the the writings the civil war diaries essentially Walt Whitman we're getting a chance on this edition of new sounds to hear some of the the music and Matt you mentioned a moment couple moments ago Jana check and his opera from the houses of the dead is like this all male cast there in there in a prison you know they're in one big and most of your opera so this all male cast with one exception and they're in one kind of a big place you know there's there's that kind of sense of claustrophobia that that Jana check plays with that it seems like maybe you took to heart in parts of this opera absolutely you know it Jana checks ability industry as his ability since that's the source material to humanizes a character with the tiniest stroke that these are people in the the extremes of human suffering and and that's a true ensemble piece where we meet lots of characters only briefly but the the detail and the the the reality of of who each of them is certainly left an impression on me one big difference I think is that my opera has a central figure yes you know that with men whose whose spirit radiates out into the space and I think that if you if you take women out of the hopper which would be a bad idea you would have a space that is is similar in atmosphere to house of the dead but what happens with Whitman because he's this force of kind of stubborn almost stupid optimism but he's surrounded by this unbelievable darkness and he's constantly coming into conflict with it so you do have this all male cast but as I say there is one exception and when the sole female performer appears on stage it almost has a hallucinatory affect yes because you've become accustomed to this all male world yes you know I really missed for emotional and musical reasons working with a cast that has a a more even gender ratio because also you know musically that the palette of multiple of voices from that from ranging from soprano to bass is really lovely and and this offer is is mostly in that ten or ten base section of the palette the only female character in the opera actually is a kind of messenger someone who was wandering around spreading the word that the war had ended and so she also serves as the thing that burst the bubble of the space you know the the hospital disintegrates literally the walls fly out we know we we end up left in this barren wilderness so she's the the harbinger of of of the end of the war and I do think if we play it right I I do want the listener to feel shocked by the sound of of of a female voice and also she feels a certain shock when she walks into the hospital she actually says oh my god this is what this is what life is like for you and we hopefully both the performers and the listeners have gotten used to it you know by that point we've kinda lost perspective because this is the world that we're living in and then she comes in and and it's a shock right now you were referring before to the fact that you do have a central character and then you have you know with other key characters have warmly who you know is the the second key but then there are as with houses of the dead the other check copper there are other characters who stand out from the ensemble we get to know them briefly one of them is Freddy is it stores yes this year of Starkel figure it's a long story but there is a there's a figure named Freddie stars from the first World War actually who should have received a high honor from the army was an African American soldier but who but he didn't so I I I only use the name us out for this figure of an African American soldier in our civil war peace that character sung by my dear friend valentines and the role is kind of a tailor made suit because defines voice he's a he's a very deep bass but he also has this totally uncanny falsetto range I mean if divine ever wants a second career as a countertenor or even like a strand of hair a soul singer or a soul singer he really has lots of options and I wanted to write a role that that allowed the phone to to strut his stuff in in many in many ways this figure is really crucial Freddie was born a slave and actually he shares an experience that he had back when he was running away where has this sort of justice in our vision of of of of seeing what the future will bring both of the progress but also the pain and it's this it's just one of those strange moments in life where you have a moment of clarity and and it allows you to go on the reason I have it in the opera is that I wanted something to prompt one of Whitman's poems I want something to inspire one of women's great poems we and we we have the poems we don't always know what life experiences inspired so I wanted to proceed the Whitman poem crossing Brooklyn ferry which is one of women's greatest visionary poems with Freddie's story which makes an impact on women and it is Freddie tells his story in what sounds almost like a folk melody it begins with what could be a spiritual malady and then it goes into my yard weird and and wacky musical world eventually but you know when I wrote the melody down I thought that it was a transcription of something I thought oh this is a spiritual life I just need to figure out what it is and after consulting with the van and a few other people it doesn't seem to actually be a pre existing melody I think I actually did write it but I at the time of writing and I thought I just think I've heard it before yeah it really has that that curious quality of sound familiar even the first time you hear it I'm glad well let's hear it this is from the opera crossing by my guest Matthew aucoin and in this performance he's conducting the academy festival orchestra of the music academy of the west all all those who all small hold some the whole hello Sir that.
