Disney World reopens as coronavirus cases spike in Florida

"And more cases of Corona virus in the United States of America and in Florida. They're up fivefold in just two weeks. I bring this up because Cinderella Castle has been silent for 116 days. That's how long Walt Disney World has had its doors closed because of the pandemic. On Saturday. Disney will welcome guests back to its flagship theme park in Orlando. Disney Resort plans to begin a phased re opening on Saturday for the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom parks, followed by Epcot. And Hollywood studio on July 15th Michael with record rising cases in Florida, I think I saw a Dade County like almost 40% of people in Dade County are positive for Corona virus right now. Should they be doing this? Or is it time for us to reopen the world? Well, of course, they shouldn't be doing it in Florida's a product of a poor leadership both from the national level and the state level. They've pretended like this virus was a hoax. And here we sit. Look, there's nothing more. I like in life than getting on a roller coaster and yelling my brains out who in their right mind's gonna go do that right now. I mean, I just wouldn't do it. It's crazy. We've got to find a cure for this thing. Maybe Disney rather than paying for all of that could help us find this cure fund it, fix it so we can get back to normal. Well, I don't. I don't have a horse in the race when it comes to Florida, although I will just say, I do think it is worth noting when they did hate the way they're handling the Corona virus. There have been failures everywhere, but they were one of the first states to stop covert patients from going, Tio. Long term nursing care facilities, So that's a good thing. Now. Disney is on a whole other game. I personally wouldn't go to a crowded theme park where assuming screaming and laughing and yelling is just going, Tio. Shoot those particles right through the masks. I know Disneyland Japan opened. We talked about this yesterday, and they've banned a screaming On roller coasters. I don't know how you bands, you know, because you know what they said Their official line is scream inside your heart.

The parks and resorts are putting in place for guests and employees reimagined experience. Starting the moment visitors arrive. Disney Hotels have switched to mobile checkin. All you need is an app that tells you your room number. And once you reach your room, I press unlock door. Hold my phone against the lock. And we're in Disney world will be limiting daily attendance greatly reduced capacity, not just on the overall part man, but every one of our facilities. Other measures include temperature checks had park entrances, mandatory face coverings for all guests and staff. Noose found in Bubba Wallace's garage stall, NASCAR says

"Now? Mike Greenberg Bristol with you this morning. And as I said right off the top of the show, I would have loved to have started with any of those today, and we certainly will get to the mall, but we begin with an absolutely despicable story coming from the world of NASCAR. In this developing story, a noose was found in bubba Wallace's. Stall at the NASCAR race in Talladega Alabama yesterday less than two weeks after Wallace led efforts to push NASCAR to ban the confederate flag NASCAR announced the news last night well after the race had been postponed due to inclement weather, and said it was launching an immediate investigation here. was there statement late this afternoon? Nascar was made aware that a noose was found in the garage stall of the forty three eighteen. We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough. How seriously we take this heinous act! We have launched an immediate investigation and we'll do everything we can to identify the persons responsible and eliminate them from the sport. As we have stated unequivocally, there is no place for racism and NASCAR, and this act only strengthens our resolve to make the sport open and welcoming to all while himself tweeted a statement last night, which read in. In part today's despicable act of racism and hatred leaves me incredibly saddened, and serves as a painful reminder of how much further we have to go as a society and how persistent we must be in the fight against racism. As my mother told me today, they are just trying to scare you. This will not break me. I will not give enor- rely back down. I will continue to proudly stand for what I believe. In Allah Marty Smith is covering this for us in the scene in Talladega. He joined us an hour ago. The News in Bubbas garage stall was actually seen by a member of his team. Darrell Bubba never saw it. He never saw it personally and win. That team members saw it. He alerted NASCAR. And Nascar immediately had a meeting of its senior executive staff, and they made the decision that they were going to remove this person from the sport as quickly and rapidly as possible. This was not a situation where a fan might have meandered in on this because there were no fans in the garage. So what you're looking at is you're looking at team members. You're looking at officials. You're looking at potential security. You're looking at maybe cleaning personnel that have access to these garage areas. Again! That was Marty Smith with US earlier. Lebron James among many who posted messages about this. He tweeted sickening Wallace, my brother! No, you don't stand alone I'm right here with you as well as every other athlete, I just want to continue to say how proud I am of you for continuing to take a stand for change here in America and sports at Nascar. I salute you as well. Well Sprint Cup driver Michael McDowell added. God help us the level of evil. It takes to do something like this is disgusting. This is enraging and heartbreaking all at the same time Dale. EARNHARDT Jr. tweeted simply a hope of a wins it tomorrow again. The race will be run today. It was delayed by weather yesterday, and as I bring Steven A. and Marcus into the conversation here I'll. Repeat that the area in which this was discovered, there were cameras all over it should be. Relatively easy investigation for the NASCAR officials to conduct, and we are standing by for any information live from Talladega Marty Smith will bring us anything as soon as there is any further news with that thought in mind, Stephen. We've not yet had a chance to say good morning to you I. I just want to give you the floor here. What are your feelings and thoughts as we see this story developed from last night? Well I. Mean I think that for me? Personally I'm a little bit different than the kind of sentiments that have been expressed by a lot of people, because obviously you find this reprehensible and disgusting, and it's incredibly sad, and we get all of that but there's a forgive the the figurative smirk that might end up covering my face or draping my face because to me. Me It's just folks displaying the ignorance, and the more they put it on display, the more it enlightens a lot of people in White. America about what Black America has been telling them about for so many years decades spanning centuries for crying out loud. This is not new. This is something that we've known existed for all time. This is something we know we'll continue to exist. And there is no way around it and so this there comes a point in time where you have to accept that reality one of the things that I would encourage everybody to go watch. If you get an opportunity, you can go on Netflix. You can watch that documentary thirteen by EVA do vernay along with others, sensational job of address mass incarceration in the United States, of America one of the things they highlighted. Is that under the Nixon? Administration where you're literally talking about you know White folks that are hippies and you associate them with marijuana and you associate black. Black folks with crack cocaine, and as a result of that will ultimately galvanize folks in your favor, because they'd be scared to death, and you'd be hearing words like law and order ad, nauseam that was in the sixties for crying out loud in two thousand and twenty, and we're hearing the same thing now. You just have to open your eyes. You have to pay attention to the parallels you have to. You have to pay attention to the correspondence. That's taking place right before your very eyes throughout history, we have had people that have been adroit at light laying low. Controlling the narrative, manipulating the narrative switching things to their favor, all in an effort to maintain or to retain power. It's something to kind of thing that has been taking place in. Usually they've been incredibly skilled at remaining in the dark and saying it's then it's not us, it's them. It's not us well guess what are coming to light more and more in this day and age I find that a cause for celebration, not a 'cause. You know to be saddened by anything. The I find these to be. Beautiful tops as difficult as it may be the fact that I nation appears to be becoming more enlightened than ever before and ultimately as a result. We're coming together. I find that to be a huge plus not a minus. If the ignorance has to show itself, and if the ignore, it has to showcase themselves in order for this to happen coming out of the dock to me. That's of course was celebration Marcus. Stephen. That's what I alluded to earlier man just come on out. Show us who you are, so we know how to deal with you and everybody. That's four. Right knows how to deal with you. Look listen, this is. There has been. We've been having this conversation for a long time. I mean we had this conversation we had. This conversation went capped kneeled about police brutality. We talked about racing all of them and man you. You look if you look around and social. There were people literally Oh twitter last night. Say A BUBBLE! Did this for attention? What what are you talking about like? It's not. It's not unfathomable that someone could do that. We sold Jesse's me. Make reference to that because people can conjure up things to create narratives to make people overreact. That's why saying earlier. Estimate I'm not doing this emotional. Rollercoaster I'm getting off of it right like I'm nuts and bolts to was going on. There is progress that needs to be made in this country I'm focusing on that progress that needs to be made. That's what bubble wireless is focused in on a by making his statements in Nascar. That's a lot of athletes are focused on a lot of people in society in general of focused on making sure that we draw a line between racist people and people that one good for everybody. That's the bottom line. Look for as much as this is egregious and the things that have transpired for low type. I grew up in the south light. It's not. An uncommon for me to see racist people are know what it looks like or even even be surprised or shocked about certain things that tend to happen. The bottom line is this. I'm often emotional roller coaster like if you racist just be that come out publicly and be that enlist separate that and you be a part of the minority port society that we want to get to, and we think we already are at so all of that being said I'm with Steve Day like in this bringing a lot of people to the light, and the hateful ones are fighting their battle because they see slipping away. Score you're not GonNa hear me say this very very often, but I wanNA give major major kudos to a Lotta. White folks out there in America because if it wasn't for them, protesting and marching with black individuals if it wasn't for them, you know engaging in the kind of of of you know resistance to whatever level of oppression we as black people have been feeling this nation I. Don't think some of these folks will. will be coming out I. mean listen the back. In the day. They used to wear the sheets and used to cover the identity and their faces that we didn't know who the hell they were by virtue of that now. Some black people, a lot of black people will tell you they exist in corporate America. They could be the very people that you're working for the very people that you're talking to I happen to be. Be Blessed we happen to be blessed to not certainly not have that at this company is because we've seen the actions on the part of our executives. And what have you over continuous basis? Elevated level of sensitivity that this place has shown throughout the years deserves to be commended. There's always work to do. There is no perfect place. Make no about it, but I'm incredibly proud to be a part of the Walt Disney and And specifically the ESPN family in that regard having set all of that I'm in the minority, because the reality is vast people, there's a vast number of people of African. American descent in the United States of America that feel subjugated I wouldn't go so far as to say enslaved, but feel subjugated by bosses in corporate America people that say all the right things when the cameras are rolling, but behind the scenes they engage. Eight your and the conduct. Subjugation that they devote their voiceless. They don't have a voice in that regard, green. Marcus knows exactly what I'm talking about. And so because of that because of these times that we're living, what we're seeing is a populous within the United States of America that sees the dramatic shift, and there's so appalled, and and put and taken aback by what they see transpiring that they can't hide their vitriol. They're coming out of the dock because they're being forced out of the dog. We as black people. People have to appreciate the fact that couldn't happen without a vast number of white individuals in our society standing with us and saying you know what we see where the hell you coming from. If we didn't see it before we see it now, and we're with you, so you have that other segment of the population saying wait a minute we lose some of our own here. Cops and Live P.D. canceled following protests against police violence

"I'm Kim. Masters and this is the high. Would breakdown joining me is my banter buddy on the Business Matt Bellamy and Matt, the protests that have been going on around the world are really relevant to Hollywood and we see Hollywood. Reacting are trying to figure out how to react to broader concerns about racism and also concerns about the way. Television and movies have contributed to the perpetuation. Of an idea about police, and how they function, this is just filters all kinds of programming, even if it's not a cop show, and it has created a situation where the cops in the public mind get a certain amount of benefit of the doubt as the heros that they are portrayed, even if they break the rules. And, so this now is something we see cops being canceled. We see a live PD, which is hit for an e cops has been on for years and his money maker, but like PD is Annie's number, one show and Anne pulled the plug. Yeah, and they pull the plug after recently ordering one hundred sixty episodes of the show and I think that's really a testament to the soul searching that's going on at a lot of these networks, and if you look at the top ten most watched shows from the past season most viewed you look at blue bloods you look at Ncis you look at Chicago PD. You look at all. All of these police oriented shows that that really do portray these police as flawed, but ultimately heroic, and I think that's what's really going to be the subject of soul-searching, and I wonder if you know beyond the obvious like these verite shows that you can go after right now I wonder if the creatives behind some of these police, procedural shows are really going to reassess how their characters are portrayed. Yeah, I mean most of these shows are run by white men, and there's a certain accepted myth about how things work at is not based in reality, and these shows don't reckon very often with racial injustice and how the Justice System Perpetuates racism. You know it's interesting. My Colleague Lesley Goldberg talked to Warren light who runs law and order Svu and asked him you know how `bout this portrayal, and he's sort of had to say. It was clear that Dick Wolf would ever who, in he has so many shows on TV, and they run in reruns. That Dick Wolf whatever you know. Step away from that portrayal of cups and again this filters through, and it's not just about cops. I mean you just saw Hbo Max pull gone. With the wind because of racist stereotypes, the glorification of the South in the era of slavery. It'll be back. It's not being censored is still available. You can buy a lot of these shows that are being looked at but. It the they're going to bring it back with some context to make it clear that this represents a certain view of the world that is no longer acceptable view of the world and Disney did that when the Disney plus dreamer launched. They realized that some of the Older Walt Disney content was not culturally appropriate anymore, and it's easy to alter things from the past, but what's more interesting to me is when we go from here. Here, and whether these concerns that have come to the forefront today where you see the entire New York Times nonfiction bestseller list devoted to issues of race and injustice. This is clearly permeating the culture right now, and where will Hollywood take it? There's GonNa. Be a lot of scrutiny on the content of these shows going forward. Yeah, I think we're going to need some change in the executive suites, but we'll see going forward. Thank you. Thank

"Then on January twenty fifth nineteen ninety-five Alice L. Bernie of the manuscript division of the Library of Congress received a phone call. She spoke to Selby Kipper who worked for the Book Manuscript Department of the esteemed. Sotheby's auction house in New York City. He was looking for information on a notebook that had been featured in nineteen twenty. One Book of Whitman's unpublished writings. He wanted to know if the notebook had been a temporary loan to the library or a permanent gift. He also wanted to find out if it was still in the libraries possession. Bernie couldn't believe what she was hearing. The notebook he was asking about was clearly one of the missing items from the Harnett collection. Tense WITH EXCITEMENT. Bernie sent him a copy of the nineteen fifty four pamphlet prepared by the library and the FBI two days later on January. Twenty seven the vice president of Sotheby's David Redden Cold Bernie back. He announced they had not one but four of the missing Whitman notebooks plus the Cardboard Butterfly on February twenty four. Th Library officials accompanied by several. Fbi agents traveled to New York to take possession of the items. The return of the notebooks was reported across the Country Library of Congress official David Wig door stated the notebooks are the most important material. We could have hoped to recover of anything known in American literature. The foreign notebooks that were recovered in one thousand nine hundred ninety five contain treasure trove of unique information on. Whitman's early life among them is the so-called earliest notebook dated to eighteen forty seven. Almost a decade before leaves of grass was published. It includes an early form of verses. That would eventually make it into one of Whitman's signature poems song of myself another notebook tracks. Whitman's time in Washington. Dc in eighteen sixty three as a nurse for civil war soldiers and yet another Whitman mentions his failure to get a job at the Treasury Department because Secretary Salmon p chase disapproved of his poetry. He states a fellow. Employees thought very much of leaves of grass. But he said that Mr Chase seeing the book on the Center Table said how is it possible? You can have this nasty book here. The FBI immediately began investigating. It was a miracle to have the notebooks back but everyone was wondering where they had been for the past forty years and more importantly if this could lead them to the six notebooks still missing the man who first brought the notebooks and the butterfly to Sotheby's was an attorney who had been going through his dead father's estate. He realized the notebooks were antique but didn't know what they were so he asks subsidies to appraise them. Neither the man's name nor his father's name has ever been released publicly. The man told Sotheby's that his father had received the books as a gift from a friend thirty years earlier the name of the friend is known by the FBI but it also has never been revealed in fact the F. B. I. has never provided any details of their investigation to the public. Probably because the case is still ongoing what seems clear however is that no one was ever charged or arrested in connection with the return of the notebooks in the Nineteen Hundred Ninety S. No information has ever come to light about how the notebooks were originally stolen. Despite meticulous searches of the library complex itself. There was always the possibility that the items had somehow been misplaced or accidentally destroyed but the recovery in the nineteen ninety s proved once and for all that the notebooks had been stolen speculation on the thief's identity has tended to focus on an inside job. The theft might have even occurred when library staff were packing the items in one thousand. Nine hundred ninety. Two though Alvin Cramer had supervised the packing. He couldn't have been there every moment for each container. A staffer might easily have falsified a packing slip intending to sell his prize to the highest bidder on the black market after the four notebooks were returned in nineteen ninety-five. Herbert Harnett a Yale professor and son of the original donor said that the stolen items were the most important pieces in the collection to have known this. The thief must have been an expert on whitman lending credence to the idea that it might have been someone who worked at the Library of Congress among the six notebooks. Still missing is one. Where Whitman discusses the infamous fugitive slave law of eighteen fifty? Another is a journal with notes from his time as a nurse and a notebook containing a photograph of an unknown woman. Walt Whitman had been well-regarded during his life but had also been the subject of intense controversy and scrutiny but in the years and decades following his death his fame and importance in American history grew he came to be viewed as one of the great literary voices of the. Nineteen th century his verses defining what it meant to be an American literary critic. Harold Bloom insisted. That Whitman was every American's imaginative father and mother. Art Historian a friend of Whitman. Mary Berenson stated you cannot really understand America. Without Walt Whitman. His importance in history made his personal papers and manuscripts of vital resource for historians and scholars. But like many artifacts and historical documents they became a target for art thieves hoping to make a quick buck. The six notebooks that are still missing. Might be sitting in a dusty attic somewhere. There owner having no idea of their importance or they might be in a private collection poured over and lovingly maintained by a collector with a dark secret in two thousand nine. The Chief of the manuscript division of the Library of Congress. James Hudson sent a letter to archivists and book dealers around the country in it. He provided information on the case and descriptions of the still missing notebooks hoping to produce new tips in the case but as with similar efforts in one thousand nine hundred fifty four. The letter failed to generate any lease to this day. The location of Walt Whitman's six remaining notebooks remains a mystery. "After his death in eighteen ninety to poet. Walt Whitman's papers and correspondence were collected and distributed among his three literary in nineteen seventeen. One of them. Thomas Biggs Harnett turned his portion over to the library of Congress for the next twenty five years. The collection remained safely in the possession of the library but then disaster struck in December of nineteen forty. One Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The United States soon joined the side of the allies in the war against Germany and Japan fears of attacks spread on the. Us Mainland. Could what happened at Pearl? Harbor happened in California New York or worse Washington. Dc WITH ANTI aircraft guns being installed on buildings around the city administrators in the Library of Congress believed. The threat was too great. The library was full of valuable and irreplaceable historical documents and artifacts. It was decided that the most important items would be moved from Washington into the interior of the United States where they would be safe from coastal bombing raids. It would be a significant undertaking. The man in charge of it all was Alvin W Kramer as keeper of the collections. At the library. He supervised the packing and transfer of the items to various secure locations around the country. These included for Knox and the Virginia Military Institute. Each container had an unbroken seal attached to it ensuring its security among the many valuable items sent away were original copies of the declaration of Independence and the Constitution a handwritten draft of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and manuscripts by Thomas Jefferson also included was the Harnett collection of Walt Whitman's papers and notebooks shipped by train and delivered by truck. The collection ended up on the upper floor of the library at Denison University in Granville Ohio there. The containers were guarded day and night by a rotation of military police by the fall of nineteen forty four. It had been decided that. Us coastal areas were no longer at risk of being bombed so after two years in storage. The collections were returned to the Library of Congress to be unpacked and re catalog. A stream of trucks began arriving daily at the library. Kramer and his staff were responsible going through it all. It was a monumental task. When a small crate containing Whitman's twenty four notebooks and Cardboard Butterfly was open? There only fourteen notebooks and no butterfly. Bremer and his staff were horrified. The seals on the crate. We're intent meaning hadn't been open since it had been packed up two years earlier therefore the items couldn't have been stolen while in transfer or storage but the library of Congress had been cleared out in nineteen forty two. So where were they? Library staff began an intensive search for the notebooks. Thousands boxes and crates had been packed up with the items from the library. The last shipment alone included almost five thousand containers enough to fill twenty six freight cars. Surely the notebook said simply being put in the wrong box but an exhaustive months-long search turned up nothing so library staff began a systematic search of the library itself. They ransacked storage rooms offices and addicts every room in. The palatial complex was inspected but the notebooks. Were nowhere to be found finally after acknowledging that the items were truly missing a library notified the FBI. They had followed. Every trail explored every possibility but now they had to face the unthinkable. The notebooks had never been packed up and removed from the Library of Congress so they disappeared before the evacuation and probably been stolen working. That theory law enforcement began the tedious process of attempting to track the collection through the previous two decades since nineteen twenty five the items had been freely accessible by anyone who cared to go through them and unfortunately library of Congress policy didn't include regular inventory checks of the collection so there was no way to say for certain when it had last been intact a careful analysis of piece-by-piece user records indicated that the missing notebooks had been present at least as late as April of nineteen forty one that was less than a year before the collection was packed up and shipped to Ohio. The loss of Whitman's notebook was a disaster for the Library of Congress in the literary community and invaluable resource for scholars and literary enthusiasts the notebooks. Were also important antiquities in their own right. They represented a tangible part of American history. Something irreparable in nineteen fifty four the library in conjunction with the FBI sent out a notice to auction houses rare book dealers and collectors announcing the theft and describing the missing items no complete transcriptions of the notebooks had ever been done by several authors had done partial transcriptions and photocopies had been made at least some pages from every notebook but the notice produced no leads. The case eventually went cold and the missing notebooks were forgotten by everyone but a few dedicated archivists and Whitman enthusiasts several decades past.

Let us know Howard doing reach out on facebook and Instagram at podcast and twitter at Parkas network today we will searching for Walt Whitman's missing notebooks. One of America's most celebrated nineteenth century poets. Whitman wrote down many of his ideas and thoughts in a series of personal journals during world. War Two ten of them mysteriously vanished from a sealed crate widely regarded as the father of free verse. Well Whitman was innovative and controversial in an era when poetry generally dealt with spirituality and allegory Whitman's verses such as his poem Song to Myself Exalted The Human Body and nature. His most important work leaves of grass was a collection of poems with distinctly American flavour in Eighteen. Fifty five in the preface to the first edition. Whitman wrote the genius of the United States is not best or most in its executives or legislatures but in the common people. The proof of a poet is that his country absorbs him as affectionately as he absorbed it early in his adulthood. Whitman began carrying small notebooks in his pocket. He used them to record everything from names and addresses. Two thoughts ideas and scraps of free verse is believed to have produced more than a hundred of them during his lifetime following his death at age. Seventy two many of Whitman's manuscripts notebooks came into the possession of one of his literary executors. A man named Thomas Biggs Harnett inside. One of the notebooks was a small cardboard butterfly. That had been depicted in a famous photograph. Whitman Harnett gave his collection to the Library of Congress in nineteen eighteen but during World War. Two ten of the notebooks disappeared without a trace after exploring with bins life and legacy will examine the notebooks themselves how they came to be lost and how four of them were unexpectedly rediscovered in the nineteen ninety s Whitman was born into a nation in crisis earlier that year eighteen nineteen the country had fallen into its first major economic recession. One that would last for the next two years and in February the House of Representatives had passed a controversial piece of legislation insisting that slavery be abolished in the territory of Missouri. The intense arguments that followed became the first milestone in the lead up to the civil war. Born on Long Island. Whitman was the second of nine children in eighteen twenty three. When he was four years old the family settled in Brooklyn New York but his father wasn't very good with money and the family never stayed in one place for too long. In fact they lived in four different homes during their first four years in Brooklyn despite the frequent moving whitman had a happy upbringing. One of the most memorable events of his childhood was the visit of the Marquis de la yet to New York City. A Frenchman Lafayette was widely regarded as an American hero from the Revolutionary War. He'd not only encouraged French involvement in the war but had served as a general in the US rebel army and had been wounded in battle in eighteen. Twenty four president. James Monroe invited Lafayette to tour America. In Honor of the upcoming fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of independence. He visited all twenty four states and was received with adoration by frenzied crowds. Around General Fayez Grand Tour arrived in New York in July of eighteen twenty five during the July fourth celebrations. He stopped to lay the cornerstone of public library. That was under construction in Brooklyn. Schoolchildren had turned out in large numbers for the ceremony including six year. Old Walt Whitman. However big piles of dirt from the excavation prevented Wittman and a number of other children from seeing the proceedings when several men in the crowd began to help them move into a better spot. Lafayette decided to join in. The Frenchman came up to young men. Lifted him up and gave him a kiss before setting him back down where he could better see the festivities. It was a moment within would remember for the rest of his life. Whitman's formal education concluded in eighteen thirty. When he was just eleven years old by then he'd already shown an interest and talent for writing so he went to work in a law office as an assistant and errand boy. The office had a large collection of books and Whitman immersed himself in them. He later wrote for a time. I now revelled in reading of all kinds. It was an amazing treat as a teenager. He apprenticed with several newspapers and published his first works of poetry in the New York Mirror. His family moved back to Long Island in eighteen. Thirty three and Whitman join them. Two years later then after a brief stint as a teacher the nineteen year old Whitman started his own newspaper called the long islander. It's still in print today serving as a community newspaper for Whitman's hometown of hunting but Whitman's association with paper didn't last long. He was a gifted writer and editor but running. A business was a different story less than a year after he started it. His financial backers pulled their funding and forced him to sell it. Despite the setback Whitman was still determined to make a living in the publishing industry for the next decade. He worked as an editor for more than ten different newspapers. In New York and Long Island. These jobs allowed him to publish his fiction poetry editorials though he would later be famous and controversial for his nonconformist lifestyle. He was far more traditional in his youth. His first book was a temperance novel published in eighteen forty. Two when Whitman was twenty three. The temperance movement began in earnest a few years earlier and pushed the idea. That alcohol was dangerous and immoral. Whitman had decided from a young age that he didn't like the taste of liquor and he'd seen the effects it could have on people in the TAVERNS and brothels of New York City so when approached by the publisher of the New York world about writing a short novel about the dangers of alcohol. Whitman quickly agreed called Franklin Evans. The book was about a promising young man whose life and career are derailed by alcoholism. Whitman would later distance himself from the book saying he'd only written it for the money he even went so far as to claim that he was under the influence of alcohol himself. He wrote it over the next few years. Whitman published another novel and continue to work in the newspaper industry. He also began to write down random thoughts and ideas throughout the day on leather bound notebooks. He carried with him. He hoped to eventually turn the scrap notebooks into pieces. He could publish by eighteen forty eight he was twenty nine and working for the Brooklyn. Daily Eagle as the newspaper's editor in chief. He used editorials to champion a number of causes that were important to him including fair wages opposition to the death penalty and improved schools but it was his perspective on limiting the spread of slavery that ultimately got him into hot water. Eighteen forty eight was an election year and the current Democratic President James K polk was retiring. The paper was a supporter of the Democratic Party but members of the party were increasingly at odds with one another over slavery earlier that year the United States at one a large portion of territory from Mexico following the Mexican American war as a result expansion of slavery into the new territory dominated. That year's Democratic Convention Southerners almost universally supported expansion but many northern Democrats wanted the territory to be free from slavery in order to benefit small farmers. They'd be at an economic disadvantage competing against plantations so when the Democratic Party nominated a candidate who supported the expansion of slavery many.

"It was October of nineteen forty four and forty year. Old Elvin W Kramer watched as several workers carefully brought over another heavy wooden crate and set it down on the floor before him. He bent down to inspect the stained paper labeled on the side. It Read Library of Congress Harnett Collection Number One. It had been a long time coming but the contents were finally home. Three years earlier the items had quickly been packed up and sent to a few secrets secure locations under fear of an attack on Washington. Dc The country had entered World War. Two and anything could happen. However the threat had passed and Kramer was now supervising the return of the collection to the library. It was tedious job. But as keeper of the collections Kramer wouldn't delegate the task to anyone else as his assistance opened. The Lid of the crate. Creamer took a look at the packing slip. The box contained twenty four notebooks. That had belonged to famed poet. Walt Whitman these were handwritten by Whitman himself and contained a treasure trove of information about his life and art staff members began pulling objects out of the crate. And Kramer check them off one by one as they were handed over to conservators when everything had been removed one of his assistants motion for workers to bring the next box. Wait a minute. That can't be everything. Kramer said exasperated. His checklist indicated ten more notebooks. Should have been inside the crate. His staff just stare at him in incomprehension. The container was definitely empty. The rest of Whitman's notebooks. Were.

"He said in his blog post which also ran a oddly as a print ad i mean look i worked for print newspaper for a long time so i'm not going to knock print prefer guy like him to buy into dead in the wall street journal in new york times is is a little bit odd where you're looking for he opened the new york times nowadays is self relief i know but you want relief from the news so there it it anyway he criticised android and android phones i think he said android makes you fight with yourself with something and and he said on stage of you there are no good android so he wanted to make a phone i think at roughly the same time or a little bit afterward he got the idea for this broader vision which it's really masing so the ponies android it's a nice android phone it could have been a nexus or pixel coming out of school if he still was there he probably would have done the thing with the pins on one of those phones um i think the you have to you have to put that to one side the real story what andy is trying to do at this company which called the central is the ambient oas new platform designed for the era where we're heading toward ambient computing we're heading toward the computer kind of controlling everything and be being less of an object that you're focused on being more of a you know i think ultimately the carpets the walls your clothing everything will have sensors and chips and you won't.

"That's video game we should do that with the xbox and that was microsoft's big plan for tv we're gonna make tv interactive call them at channels and it went nowhere because of this thing that you want which is a synchronized entertainment where you sit down you tell the tv what you wanna watch it doesn't matter what shower or what network platform or whatever entrusted to you and if you build interactivity into it than either you have to play the game and i don't think apples talking games or has three live so that your feedback to the performer or whatever is meaningful and i i don't i think when i hear tv companies say their platform will enable interactivity what they mean is the only way to interact will be honor platforms ever will have to pick our platform but that's not actually the thing in your call him walt that you see what were you want us just watched shows you want to lean back you are not able that's why didn't see me right i didn't really right about interactivity but and we agreed we'd tucked but on a podcast so you might be right up tell you there's an app first of all their logic there are a lot of games on apple tv i think couple of thousand games on apples i i will just i will say the audience in ever again disagree with me a none of them are great they're all basically iphone games into if you're really care about games issued by a playstation i understand what you're saying but they're still they're still as their interactivity am some interactivity in them and secondly we're not talking about with a look when i talk about beam lacolle up tv shows are going to be people gonna to call up only tv shows you and you hate we're not talking about quality they're going to their people that love playing candy crush.

"There algorithms takeover and you've gotta living magazine about something you're interested in yeah i feel bad for the green bay packers free agency signing section which will be never populated by any news whatsoever but that's just me personally that's really interesting right because the what we've talked about on the show a million times is the desegregate of news so right in every contact so we start with the media articles go out in the world they're not connected to home pages are actual printed magazines sights even your kinda coming in cyrus who social media for puerto saying okay what's fully embrace that and will react things around topics from multiple multiple sources and be as you want exactly that's exactly what it is and it serve like in like if you love the virgin who doesn't you can go to the verge on any of your devices was we have a beautiful responsive website and you'll see what editor's like you and teeter bone mention mentioned dear have decided should be aggravated under the the verge of brand vikings pro bowl quarterback another empty section and from just i imagine were planning an wall tom brady addition of the verge yeah for day the front the walt mutiny is complete but the point is that's you know that's the judgment of the editors the verge which is very good judgment in my opinion but some there might neil i conceivably be somebody who's judgment dozen aligned with that so they.

"A navigational search and whatever else they think are dangerous to the open web yeah the so there are high stakes again i think the web is the single most important platform it it's what enabled almost all this other stuff to happen and so i think having a guardian of the web idealistically is tremendously important so i know in that sense i very much i agree with you i'm rooting former zillow i think they just have to find things about the web that resonate with consumers beyond ideals because i don't think consumers give a rat's ass about ideals unless it's privacy in which case some of them i care but i think is as we have seen time and time again convenience can often trump privacy as well so there's there's a lot there but i think finding the pieces the web that are resident with consumers and provide opportunity for other innovators is that's the big piece from his alone maybe they can do it but it's that's the that's the actual thing beyond just the ideals that we both i think agreer or worth got guarding pretty jealously i gree and i think the listeners should know that we're gonna keep track of mosul hilas when i can do a weekly despite let's take a really deep wonky pivot and we're not i can do that but but we're not gonna let alone with walt kneeling one reason i robot this boy it's been years since i've looked at fire fox you know there's a whole bunch of reserve i did this piece but that was one of them so.
