That's 4 95 north, coming up to Middleborough up to the north here. Delays coming out of Maine and New Hampshire. 95 south is backed up for about three miles through Kittery and another 4.5. Resident burned, condo complex damaged after four-alarm fire in northeast Dallas
"Dallas Fire Rescue was called out early this morning to fight a four alarm fire in a condo complex on Walnut Street, Nero Delia Road in northeast Dallas. Looting Deals Further Blow to Small Businesses
"Many of the wounds from this week's unrest will take time to heal so too. Will the economic impact on small businesses in the protests areas? They were already struggling from the loss of revenue because of shutdowns to the virus, then just as they were taking steps to reopen, many were hit by looting were had to board up to prevent damage. Our Scott Calvert spoke to many of them, and he joins me now with more. So Scott tell us what's been happening across Philadelphia in the past week. Sure, we'll things have actually been pretty calm the last couple of days, but Saturday night. There was a lot of violence in the downtown area in center city along Walnut Street and Chestnut Street a lot of chain stores, things like that were self sustained, quite a bit of of damage, but then starting on on Sunday. The looting really spread all around the city well beyond center. Center city to business corridors all over the city. Really there were dozens of business quarters that sustained quite a quite a bit of damage, and that includes the fifty second street corridor in West Philadelphia, sustained lots of damage. There were dozens of businesses along roughly a half mile stretch that were damaged to some degree, ranging from just broken windows to completely destroyed and set on fire. And many of the small businesses you spoke with are owned by African, American and immigrant owners who found have been disproportionately impacted. Why is that? Well these independent small businesses you know they. They don't have a lot of cash. In Reserve they have oftentimes just one business, and if there's damage done to that, you know they can't necessarily get things fixed up and get back up and running. They just they just don't have a lot. In the way of resources, the way that say a large corporation would have and. And so the the effect is definitely sort of disproportionate in terms of the difficulty they face, and this a city like many large cities across America with a painful history of race relations. We saw the statue of former mayor Frank. Rizzo removed after it was vandalized last night. Scott gives us more of a sense of the historical context that these business owners are working under. Right, so, Yes Philadelphia certainly has a fraud history like a lot of cities in America and the area where I spent time in West Philadelphia on fifty second street. It's really interesting because it is often described as the main street of West Philadelphia it had a real heyday in early part of of the twentieth century and around world. War Two and extending the nineteen fifties, there was a thriving, African American, Middle Class neighborhood there and businesses to support the folks who lived in that area, and then starting in the nineteen sixties and going forward there were there was white flight and a lot of other. Other things that caused a decline there were recently the city. Philadelphia had invested a lot of resources in trying to to bring it back. The the quarter was sort of on the upswing there were there were fewer vacant storefronts and a different mix of businesses, but this is mainly a lower income African. American neighborhood right around there, and that's who the WHO the customer bases and you know. I was talking with a man who saw one of these destroyed storefronts, and he was really disheartened, because he shops there all the time they have. They have Desai's close. He needs and so he was really really sad to. To, see what had happened there and a couple of doors down actually right? Next door is a corner pharmacy that was it was cleaned out by looters, and this is a a farm neighborhood pharmacy. You know that fills prescriptions for people who live in the area who may not have a car, so there's a real direct connection between the businesses and the people who live there, and without a doubt having these businesses at least temporarily closed is going to hurt the neighborhood
