How online retailers are handling the COVID-19 gold rush

"There is high demand online for disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer facemasks. Things people hope will prevent corona virus so much though that we've seen inflated prices for those items on Amazon and Ebay even on Walmart's online store in places like oetzi other online sellers are making claims that certain products will help. When there's no proof they actually will. Amazon has removed over a million items from third party sellers and says it's working with officials in multiple states to prosecute the quote worst offenders for price gouging on corona virus related items and Ebay is blocking new listings of disinfecting wipes and ninety five surgical masks and hand. Sanitizer LOUISE Metaxas covers online platforms for wired. I think the Ebay story says two things. One Ebay doesn't really have the capacity to handle this on a listing by listening. So they're just like you know we're not going to deal with this anymore and then secondly I think it points to how these platforms are really responsive to public relations. Crises doesn't sell something that a bunch of people are really upset about Amazon doesn't either but I think that Amazon is more willing to kind of go listing by listing. And try and take a scalpel at this rather than a hammer and Ebay is just like we can't even we don't have the capacity to even deal with this right now. What ABOUT AMAZON? Does it actually have the resources to sort of scalpels this problem in the near future and beyond? I honestly don't think so. I'm still seeing a lot of price. Gouging still seeing a lot of misleading listings for the kinds of face masks. That actually won't protect you from the virus so I think that these issues are going to continue to be a problem and I think that they show that just like social platforms how to respond to misinformation about a public health crisis. These e commerce platforms also have to figure out how to have like a very controlled response. I think that this is one of the first big crises where these ECOMMERCE platforms have had to figure out a content moderation strategy just like the social platforms. Have it and I don't know if they were really ready for that in the same way. I wonder if this is an an arena where it like with so many things with tech platforms some regulation would help you know a tech platforms have resisted a lot of regulation and oversight but I wonder if they might be just. It would be helpful for them to have a rule to follow. Instead of having to sort of like going to a secret boardroom and make a role. Actually think that that's a great idea. I've gotten a ton of emails from people who work in contracting and construction because they actually need to wear these masks to do their job by law and a lot of places I mean. They can't get a hold of so they're contracting jobs. That are on hold right now because they can actually get the supplies that they need those sorts of unintended consequences or the sorts of things that regulation can prepare for ahead of time. I think that'd be great. It also makes it a lot easier for Amazon to make this decision very quickly. And not have you know. Pushback from their cellars or pushback from consumers. And they can just point off the regulators and say this is already a pre made decision and we're following the regulation rather than having to exactly scrambling come up with their own piecemeal decisions here which I think is is really ineffective and creates a lot of backlash for them. I think they would actually welcome. Not and then as a result of course we're seeing sellers inflate prices and other sellers even offering products that they say will guard against Krona virus when they actually won't right. How widespread is this sort of generalized? Misbehavior with complicated here is that there are legitimate. Supply chain issues. As well. So on one hand I think there are opportunistic sellers who are trying to kind of Jack up the price of hand sanitizer Jack Up. The price of face masks to entice. Shoppers were scared and willing to pay more than they usually would. But I think that there are also issues where I've heard from sellers were saying that distributors are actually raising their list prices. Because they're having trouble getting a hold of stock or they're having trouble actually producing these goods at the level of which their demand. So I think that you are seeing some legitimate supply and demand issues here. In addition to opportunistic people who are trying to make a off of a crisis. So I think this is a really kind of you know multifaceted issue and it's not a simple just like. Oh you know this guy wants to make a bunch of money off people who want to sanitize their hands more than usual. It's also that this. Is this really complicated? Supply chain that we've created where people are accustomed to going on Amazon and getting something cheap in you know as little as twenty four hours to their doorstep when that's not possible you kind of see the cracks in the infrastructure here where there are legitimate issues. Where within China? Where was the epicenter of the virus? Originally where all these factories are. Where a lot of things I can't sanitizer and mass are actually created so. I think that they're kind of more issues here than you might expect. From a from a supply chain perspective

My boys will not wear jeans. They wear athlete aware. And it's just and I know that that in it under armor that hates that term. I. It's but that's what it is. It's like athletes are it's something that I'm going to be wearing in twenty years when I drive a golf cart. Sounds awesome sign me up. Okay. So as we wrap up I've got I've got to ask we talked dockers earlier. Yeah. Let's let's briefly belly up to the bar here. And talk about our Jeanne wearing history. Andy cross just gimme gimme gimme the overview. Yeah. Well, so I I've I'm gone through Wrangler as I've gone through lease. I never was like the super I, of course, I am not now the super fashion, you know, person. But I did I did have a little bit of one embarrassing g moment, we were at a a motley fool border directors and Tom Gardner trying to get us all bond was talking about an embarrassing story. And and I mentioned one thing that I just kind of like to do when I try on jeans to back when I used to go to the store, try them on and kind of turn around and check out how my backside looks. You're talking the board. This is mentioned I mentioned this the board of directors like when I go home. Years ago. And it got a really good laugh. But I that was one of my I wish I had a story bow from the border, drew confessions. It was a true confessions. But but yeah, I have paralegal is on right now that's kind of a standard Goto their forcible. And you know, they've opened up there a lots of different types of styles that match what I want so for on the jeans. I am currently wearing as we speak are nine years old, and from the gap, and I'm sure they're not in style anymore. I wouldn't have ever ever. I wouldn't. Yeah. I don't know if the gap ever, I wouldn't even know how to tell and what would you say was your most stylish jeans? And if we if we this away. So I don't know how much of our audience remembers Jordache jeans, but in sixth grade, I had a brand spanking new pair Jordache that I refused to wear because they were designer and tight and ridiculous. But yet I found myself having to throw them onto attend a band concert that the parents all attended in their sixth grade auditorium, and it was I I remember it to this day. I'm sure I dream about it consistently because it was just so embarrassing, and traumatic you guys ever go the Mavi route. I I didn't Mavi. So what does that it's a brand they're still around you? So by on Zappa's, Amazon and lucky mix. Yeah. Yeah. I'm surprising. Neither I'm surprised. Neither of you mentioned tough skins because I would rock the tough skins and elementary school. And then I currently for husky children. Yeah. This you gene fits not husky. And then I went through kind of dark period in college where I wore Wrangler 's withstand Smith tennis shoes, which is terrible. Look if you're gonna wear Wrangler you have to wear boots. And I think technically you probably have to dip or two, and I yeah..

"Guys are final story one that is near and dear to my heart. We're gonna talk. Levi's talk denim. We're gonna talk jeans now, they're getting ready to open this massive flagship store in Times Square. It'll be their largest store in the world. But that's not why we're talking about is. We're talking about Levi's because according to reports they are talking about going public again. And I say again because Levi's was a public company from nineteen seventy one to nineteen eighty five. So does a leave is IPO have excited and Konak American brand for sure trying to raise six hundred eight hundred million valuation of around five billion, it looks like I don't know if it gets me excited from a sock perspective. I I have to see what kind of you know, valuation. This looks like relative to to cash flow and earnings. I don't know what growth potential looks like whether this is an international player retail play. Obviously, you know, they have their own stores almost three thousand of them. But they sell. Into fifty thousand retail locations around the world. Levi's dockers denizen brands, you know, I'll keep an eye on it. It's not it's not some hot tech guy. That's for sure. But I've never been a hot tech IPO investor anyways. And apparently, Ron we're we're talking about this before apparently Levi's t shirts are all the rage. These days who knew who know I'm telling you I conduct. It's it's an iconic American brand. And did you ever wear dockers? If you're only old men wear doctors is my question, please. Then I'll answer your questions I wore plates for like ten years too long. And Finally, I had a group of friends. It was like an intervention, and they basically said you gotta quit wearing pleaded pantheon. No one had told me in apparently, the braided belt that went I went out to did you wear the stretch waistband dockers or just the straight up straight up dockers, but they were like played it. And it was it was a bad log, and someone should have just pulled me aside. I mean, sometimes tough love is they'll throw out that braided belt. That'll come back on my gosh, I'm banking on it. Andy. What do you think leaving? I was saying it looks like Ron with saying does not somehow even though it's headquartered in San Francisco, not some, you know, high-tech investment is night. It's it'll probably be price probably around one time sales. It looks profitable. It looks like it's growing nicely. It has been a resurgent here along with the kind of Rama saying, the iconic brand the Americana. So there's enough to get me kind of excited. But but the business in general's is proven to be quite tough over the years. And I mean gap struggled, and we just know what the retail channels looking like with them more and more of their their business might be tied to their own distribution rather than dependent on the likes of the other store. Storefronts, particularly those that are tied more to malls. Which you know, traffic is down there. So we'll be interesting to think to see how they use their brand. And how that translates to a new buying experience compared to where it was the last time it went through the public markets, which is of course, a much different marketplace. Now, I'd be curious of why they need six hundred eight hundred million a capital as it somebody trying to cash out of this business, they need that capital because of some growth strategy I need to see kind of their projected use of funds. Yeah. And how much the families still own tied to it? So it is interesting. The why now like what what is it right now are they? Really trying to push grow story that they can't fund internally with their own capital. Why offer shares versus taking on more debt which is pretty cheap right now. So it might be a liquidity event from from a core group shareholders in the business one hundred and sixty five years old. He's yeah. That is a very very cool. And here's another fun fact. So if you're out and about and there's a law on the conversation K worldwide Dinna market ninety five point five billion how much of that does leave is have according to twenty seventeen figures to fifteen percent, Andy. I'll say a little bit less net. I'll say ten five point three percent on interesting. So I mean, there's there's a lot of upside if you think denim is going to be around for while kids do not wear jeans anymore..

"It's about not being able to predict the future, which I completely understand. But it's nice to at least see him in consumer. Traffic's like apple oracle business where either here Ted or ties under can understand. We saw recent investments in fintech financial technology companies which good to see because clearly that's going to be, you know, a big place to put capital for the future. So I like to see some of that in addition to kind of the old craft coke AmEx kind of stocks at his own forever. And by the way, let's not forget he's also buying his own stock. That's I mean, they bought almost a billion dollars worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock over the last last quarter. I mean, that's that's significant because he doesn't really go out there and aggressively by the stocks, and he said change his methodology for thinking about wind to buy that stock from price to book value target to win. We think the stock is undervalued and they bought a bunch last quarter. I will be curious to see if he starts buying even more apple because for perspective here apple his largest position by far almost fifty seven. Seven billion dollars worth of apple stock Bank of America around twenty five billion Wells Fargo twenty three billion. So apple foreign away. I would imagine with the apple weakness that we've seen lately he is in in the market buying more. That's just a guess. I don't think he gets hung up as much as as traditional Wall Street does and kind of these kind of quarter to quarter iphone unit sales numbers. I think he's thinking longer term about what apple will do in terms of generating cash flow and buying back stock over the next five or ten years. I would imagine he's increasing his position on this weakness. So if if I'm an investor in I hear about these ten holdings, and I'm like, you know, what buffets had an incredible track record one of the most successful public market investors in history. Why not just mimic this portfolio? Why don't you just go out and buy these tin stocks? I think you'd be better off dying Berkshire Hathaway almost than. Yeah. You you can mimic these stocks. But then then what? Because he's. Instantly changing the portfolio, adding two other companies, but more important, you're getting all the operating businesses Berkshire Hathaway, which generating the, you know, all those millions and millions.

"He's helped bail out more than one law. Large bank. So he understands these companies where where I will say I tend to not because it seemed like a black box to me. But he clearly does. And I think that makes him comfortable investing big portions of his portfolio, especially in this type of environment where interest rates are going to start to rise. And I think he probably, you know, less regulation. He sees some some good stuff on the horizon, and knowing what he knows about how these banks run he's comfortable. And so does this get you more interested in banks? Ron no. Yeah. I mean, like Warren Buffett has insights into like Rama saying that financial world from his. Swat sixty years of investing in all types of businesses. He also has has. The Todd and Ted partnership helping him out in the investing landscape as well. So, you know, you you you look through his portfolio, you do see companies like the airline investments they've made over couple of the last year or so combined with a lot of financials, the financial investment doesn't really surprise me. Ron mentioned the rising interest rates there. They are getting from from a scale perspective from a competitive possession, the largest banks continue to kind of widen. Those moats. Frankly, Mr. buffet is not one that's gonna pay ten times revenues per safer softwares of service companies, and he has a lot of capital to put the work in one hundred billion dollars of cash on the balance sheet, but they generate so much cash from their operating businesses to be able to invest so making investments like this including oracle, which they would they bought last quarter as well too. So these are the kind of investments you expect to see from Berkshire Hathaway and given the size of the organization and Madda capital generate and just their traditional valuation, bent and thinking that these don't really surprise me from these investments, he knows them. Well, and it's it is good to see the Ted and Todd influence. I think above those notorious for staying away from tech. And he said it was because he couldn't understand that. I don't it's not really about not understanding..

"Got a ton to get excited about the stock price. But from the business side, they're making the investments that are important. We used to talk about how they've got it right size the US business. The US business is everything we talked about. Now, they've got it. Humming. Along international though, is in isn't where they would want to be. You know, the any mention the flip cart acquisition, which I think is is a really interesting one. Unfortunately, the CEO of that business unit had to resign following an allegation of sexual assault. So obviously that kind of throws a little monkey wrench into some works. They had to shed control their Brazil operations emerged their UK operations with a rival to focus on the US business and their ecommerce business, so international kind of floundering they need to figure that out next. I think just on the on the US side the com- growth of three point four percent. That's an one point two percent increase in traffic. So more people coming into the stores, but a two point two percent increase on that on the average ticket price. So they actually are seeing a little bit of benefits. Not that's. A little bit little bit higher than inflation. So they actually are seen some benefits from some of the some of the pricing mechanisms that they're putting forward, and that's an increase off of the one point two percent from last quarter. So they are actually seeing some pricing benefits, which you don't really particularly expect to see that from WalMart, and this kind of environment and along those lines. Let's talk about two areas of the business that that really appear to be growing toys, so benefiting from the toys R us, bankruptcy and groceries by the end of the year. Walmart expects to be able to deliver groceries to forty percent of the US population. I guess if you look at my household, groceries and toys are pretty good despite the focus of the two young kids, and that's you know, bread and butter trying to serve the the customer base that WalMart wants to serve in ways that are more convenient than that's as Ron mentioned. They're they're investments in that the new distribution center. They've they've been working on in California will allow them to ship product goods that are forty percent fast at a forty percent faster rate than their traditional distribution centers. So a lot of investments a lot of robotic. Investments going into the distribution center. So Amazon's done this. So well warm right now playing catch-up, you know, the groceries we all buy groceries. I mean, I eat everyday MAC. So I seen you eat pretty much almost. It was not may not be thirty. I don't like them. Miss a meal. We all depend on food. And so it's a it's a good spot. The new focus on and trying to now meet the customers where they want to be met. I love this quote, CEO McMillan said WalMart can offer fresh food within ten miles of ninety percent of the population. That's that's pretty powerful. That's and you're still you're still criminally or you coming off. No, it's it's not good. This this company and this stock is not gonna knock the cover off the ball. But from a total return perspective as part of your war conservative portion of your portfolio. I got no problem with two percent dividend yield. I mean, like, it's not don't expect fireworks. But certainly of the last couple months, it's been a nice performer for people who've held on..

"In joining me in studio, we have motley for analysts, Ron gross and Andy cross gentlemen. How are we doing Velez? You do and man doing great. I'm doing good. We've got sleet snow. We've got snow snow MAC. Let's say we'll. Let's focus on the snow. It's that time of year. Six AM. It was sleeping. I went out got the newspaper. Yes. I still old school read the newspaper, and it was sleeting schools closed in Montgomery County. Maryland, why you ask I don't know. A little bit asleep. Now in the in the mean streets of north Arlington schools, did not close NATO rough and tumble. We're gritty gritty, Ron. Okay. Well, we've got lots to talk about here. We're gonna talk some Warren Buffett, and we're gonna talk some leave is and and I am going to ask you guys to share your jeans wearing history. So then just you know, a little little little catnip for people to look forward to. But let's start with WalMart stronger than expected earnings eleven straight quarters of sales growth now Andy e commerce sales up forty three percent and WalMart raised for your guidance. So that all sounds great. And then I go, and I quote, the stock in shares are down Mack. Amina course blend day, the stock price can move on a lot of reasons, but like the story here with WalMart as we talked about last quarter is really the ecommerce just the chains that they are really trying to push ahead and just even the commentary. There's so much conversation about the investments they are making. In more sophisticated distribution warehouses online, grocery delivery, grocery pickup is a big push for them. So the commerce business MAC like you said up forty three percent this quarter. That's an improvement of forty percent last quarter. Thirty three percent increase that quarter before that and twenty three percent four quarters ago. So just a year on year improvement and the continuing of the trend on the ecommerce sales for WalMart continues to be impressive. You know, the stock reaction today, I think there was probably like it's still kind of slow kind of growing like sales are up one point four percent. Two point four percent of you back out some of the currency. So maybe not quite so exciting. But really if it's such a large company, they continue to make these investments to try to move the needle and obviously compete against Amazon. A lot of good things to focus on in. This report. I think the Chroma Jinlie traders out there today are probably probably focusing on margins that got hit a little. Bit due to higher transportation costs rising e commerce fulfillment costs, which they actually, you know, that's a good thing. Because that means they're growing their ecommerce business. But nevertheless, it does come with higher costs profits actually down two percent. So it's hard to get excited about a report where profits are down from from the previous period last year. So I think that's probably what folks are are focusing on. But I do like the raise guidance. I think that that makes sense stock has been all over the place this year from February through August. It was a it was a whiff as you like to say well though, but it's comeback since then probably kind of flat year to date. So nothing really exciting coming from the stock. I liked the risk guidance. And we twenty one times earnings right here for a company that will probably grow in the low single digits. We'll we'll see how that ecommerce continues to ramp. Well, now also closed the flip card acquisition, which is the Indian business with competed a lot for and that's expensive. And then added the debt pile full what they have. But that that's an exciting investment to make. So they are they are definitely not standing still certainly not the wal mart story of, you know, even five years ago with the investments they're making they have to because there's so much more of a competitive space with free shipping from the likes Amazon and others who are not standing still. So you have a company that's going to generate fifteen billion dollars or so and free cash flow. They're going to basically Ron spend that all in dividends and share buyback. So it's really a a return of capital kind of story for investors. The stocks reacted very nicely off the lows here earlier this year at one hundred bucks sells about twenty one times earnings a slight premium to to the market. We look at the Ford earnings, so probably not..
