NASA still puzzled by source of space station air leak

"NASA and the Russian space Agency are still trying to find the source of a small air leak at the international space Station. As Brendan Byrne from member station W. O. M F G reports, officials say there is no immediate threat to the station crew, the crew on board. The station has been searching for the elusive leak for weeks after examining all of the segments on the station. The leak has been located in a module containing scientific equipment. The crew is now working to nail down the precise location of it. NASA managers say the agency will look at upcoming cargo shipments to make sure the station has enough spare air. But as of now the crew is fine until spring. A cargo capsule with additional air tanks launches from Wallops Island, Virginia later this week. The station is that to host two new crew rivals next month. The Soyuz capsule was launching in mid October and a space X dragon capsule will take off on Halloween.

"California is wine country are once again being told to evacuate from a large wildfire. Plus working mothers already had their hands full and for many of the pandemic, added virtual school to the mix Those stories next. But first the news Live from NPR news. I'm Jack Spear. The first presidential debate of the 2020 presidential election gets underway in a little less than one hour from now in Cleveland, Ohio. Tonight's debate likely to focus on the Corona virus pandemic that has cost more than 200,000 US lives and derailed the economy. And on President Donald Trump's rental tax filings, NPR's Tamaki says, Given a New York Times report showing trumping little or no taxes, he's likely to steer the debate elsewhere. The Trump campaign released a list of 17 questions, including on the Supreme Court and trade. But on the top of the list was a question about Biden, son Hunter and some of his work overseas, and that gives a hint of where they're headed. Trump has also been making other personal attacks like reviving a baseless attack that he used on Hillary Clinton in 2016. He's saying that Biden, maybe on performance enhancing drugs. He even talked about this from the White House briefing room on Sunday. Buying today released Is 2019 tax return showing he and his wife paid just under $300,000 in federal taxes. Operation Warp speed is the Trump Administration's crash program to develop a Corona virus vaccine. NPR's Sidney Lumpkin reports on how its biggest contracts could be kept secret. NPR has learned that Operation Warp speed has issued more than $6 billion in Corona virus contracts through a nongovernment intermediary. This approach allows Operation warp speed to award the money quickly but can weaken the oversight and transparency of traditional government contracting. Robin Feldman, a professor at the University of California Hastings College of the Law, says it makes some sense to cut through red tape during a crisis. But there is a tradeoff. We have to be. On a wartime footing. We have to operate in a different way, however. We have to be careful about what we throw out in that process. A senior administration official tells NPR that the government took this approach to address the pandemic. Sidney Lumpkin, NPR news lawyer for former National security advisor Michael Flynn, says she spoke with President Trump about the case in the past two weeks. NPR's Carrie Johnson reports of disclosure came in a hearing or whether to drop Flynn's criminal prosecution. The Justice Department says it wants to abandon the false statements case against Michael Flynn. The government sites problems with witnesses and evidence. But a court appointed advocate lawyer, John Gleason, argues the decision smacks of political interference. He says the Justice Department is yielding to pressure to help a friend of the president. Flynn's attorney says she asked President Trump not to pardon Flynn. Instead, she wants prosecutors to drop the case and agree not to bring it again. Federal Judge Emmet Sullivan is weighing the issues and he says he'll move quickly to decide. Carrie Johnson. NPR NEWS Washington On Wall Street, the Dow was down 131 points today. This is NPR. I'm Tanya, mostly in Culver City, California, and I'm Ari Shapiro in Washington. Tonight is the first of three debates between President Donald Trump and former vice president Joe Biden. Of course, this is a presidential election like no other with more than 200,000. People in the U. S dead from the Corona virus. There are no handshake lines, no kissing babies. These debates may be the best chance for candidates to make their case to millions of voters all at once. Senator Chris Coons of Delaware is a surrogate for the Biden campaign. And he's also a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is considering a Supreme Court nomination. Senator Coons joins us from Cleveland where the debate will take place Welcome. Great to be on with you, Ari. Right now. Polls suggest that Biden is ahead of Trump in key states and nationally. So how would you describe what the former vice president needs to do tonight? Well, Joe is going to present a detailed plan for how he's going to get us out of the pandemic and the economic crisis that's been caused by President Trump's bungled mishandling of the pandemic. He's going to be positive. He's going to be prepared. He's going to explain to us How he'll use not just this debate in this campaign, but his presidency to unite our country. We have to remember Donald Trump is a reality TV star. A master of spectacle. We all have to be prepared for some whoppers coming from Donald Trump tonight. You say Donald Trump is likely to deliver Whopper is media organizations, including NPR going to be fact checking the debate in Realty I'm if President Trump says, a litany of things that are not true, as he often does. How much time do you think Biden should put into fact checking the president and correcting false statements versus just offering his own agenda? I think former vice President Biden should be offering his own concrete and positive agenda, as he has throughout this campaign and rely on the media on rely on viewers. Listeners, too. Educate themselves about the ways in which President Trump has an uneven relationship with the truth and a long history of saying things that just are frankly, untruth. Is there one group of voters that you think it is? Most important for Biden to appeal to?.

"And they're dealing with space adventures, which is the broker company that organizes these tourist flights, and that space adventures is not just negotiate with Russians. It's also already signed to the old Space six, but they're now this week, Russians announced that they're going to be flying. Two tourists on the Soyuz capsule with a deal with space adventures. And this is supposed to happen in late 2021 next year. They have not announced the tourists names. They say they will do that later this year. Um I find that interesting. They didn't say a price. It's going to be interesting because they're gonna have to drop their price. Ah lot. I'm sure because Space six is not going to charge what they've been charging. And since they can launch cheaper than the Russians can, or maybe the same price Russians, you have to bring the price down against so we don't know how that's going to be, but they say they have got to took flight next year. Space six is looking for maybe a tourist flight next to a swell with space adventures, so it's going to be really cool. And in fact, we've got three now tourist flights. Announced to from Space X and one from the Russians. Actually, it's more than two because the Russians to tourists going to go on probably two different flights, and then you got space six has got one flight. That's orbital and another flight supposed to Goto. And as I say, and behind the Black isn't competition. Rwanda Vel. It's just really good. We go to a small satellite launch company. Long Beach, California The CEO is Peter back. Rocket lab, and he's telling us why they failed on July 4th. What's the results? Bob? Alright, well, Rocket Lab is the one that they launch small small satellites like you said. And they've been she launching up to now out of New Zealand, and they had had 12 consecutive successful flights. Their very first test flight was a failure. But that was because of ground control equipment. So it wasn't the rocket 12 successful flights on July 4th. They tried their 13th must've been all unlucky number and failed. Well, they've now investigated that they figured out that the reason that failed is an electrical connection, literally a plug. Ah, the engines on their upper stage. Ah, powered by batteries these batteries, actually, once they've used up their power. Ah, literally jettisoned to save weight. It's an interesting design that they came up with for their rocket. And what happened is somehow an electric connection came free. And they should shut down and they were able to figure this out really well, because even though the engines shut down, as was rising to try to get the orbit, they still getting the end. Everything was operating, so they were getting all the melon the melon. Telemetry as the rocket was falling to earth until it burned up, and with all that data, they were able to quickly figure out. The problem is it does not require redesign. They're going to instead, Institute of Better testing to make sure these electrical connections are connected. Well, and because of that they're now planning their next launching a late August. They also intend to try to meet their planned one launch a month for the rest of the year. And so they're going to go gung ho back into business Just like space six does things the nearly cool thing is in September, They will be trying to do their first launch from Wallops Island, Virginia, as that'll give them to launch sites. Big, big time's coming. I have forgotten about the Japanese lunar lander. This is Toyota and Japanese in space agency combining what's happened to it, Bob where when's the launch? Well, this isn't Jackson, even though Jackson when you're there space stations even though Jackson's always gonna be involved somewhat. If you're launching from Japan, the Japanese company it's called space and it's a private company has got private capital and it's trying to build a private Luna land and for the purposes of, you know, selling that capability to Teo universities and scientists and other nations. They this is their plan, and this is good. This is but a part of their Toyota was also building a lunar lander with Toyota. What I don't know. Remember a Toyota Land land or what I remember from Toyota's They made it. They had a press release about how they built a Lunar rover. And that's really was. Oh, I Seo Lunar Rover needs a lander. Yes, it needs the land. And that really little over was more press up boy than reality. Because you've got to get the land is first. And this is this is not this lander is not gonna be able to take a Toyota land you know, for were for a forerunner onto the mom the moon, But anyway, they they've announced that they're after preliminary design review and some developments. They decided they needed to do some redesigned to shrink the size of the spacecraft to make it less expensive to build unless heavy and though though they have a deal to launch on a space six rocket They and that's not Japan. By the way, a space X rocket. Oh, and it was supposed to launch. Ah ah, next year, they're going to delay at one years, 2022 to make sure they get this built properly. Um, they have raised $95 million in private capital. John has really nothing to the government in Japan. Japan is definitely trying somehow to get a private industry going because they have not fared well in competition competing. With China and the rest of the world, and that's been a disappointment. They should do better. The next story is Virgin Galactic. Bob knows I have no energy for this, but I'm going to Virginia Energy John on Lee has to do with reporting their virgin in the light of the scam involved. Rich really? Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic. We're We're promised that he's going to fly on one of these. Flights and maybe, you know, maybe that will be a solution. But in any event, Virgin Galactic is delaying his first commercial flight. But this is not nose. No, This is not news. This is It's important no to talk about it in this sense because they're trying. They just they're going to start to try to sell. Stock to raise more capital. And I think it's important Tio point out to the public. What kind of company Virgin Galactic has become become They first announced almost more than a decade and 1/2 ago that within a year for AH, Richard Branson was going to fly on a commercial spaceship. Two vehicle inaugurate commercial flights for space tourism sub orbital And they've been announcing on almost a yearly basis for now, almost 15 years, Richard Branson next year is going to fly on a virgin galactic spaceship to come forward to initiate commercial operations of suborbital space tourism. And so they announced it. When they announced their quarterly report this week, they announced that they're going to be delaying the first commercial flight with Richard Branson on board until 20 This small company making big money as a sub orbital spaceship company is, as I say, and behind the black is slim to none. They might make some money. But the simple fact is that there window for making big money and see Bobo tourism closed with the success of space sexes. Man Dragon Endeavor flight Because now space tourism is shifting toe orbital, and it's probably not gonna cost that much more. It'll be more expensive, but not that much more than and in a sub orbital flight. We'll get to go up today. There might a five minute Bob, enough version collect. Yeah, we're going on. This is what we're going to the sun Bob Zimmerman. He keeps the website behind the black next A report on sunspots. I'm John Bachelor. This is the John Baxter..

I got a good lineup of stuff to talk about tonight in the show and again don't forget about our sponsor and those would be the insiders I've been seeing an insider donations and some single donations. Come in it's greatly appreciated really really is up. You're thinking about supporting the show. This is a great time to jump on board at two five ten in fifteen twenty or twenty five dollars a month eaten central dot com forward slash insider. So you know it was kind of interesting was going through the news and The Tech News and this ring surveillance camera hacks just seemed to be light off all over the place and bad actors are harassing folks for fun. And they're getting a lot more attention than they want and it's some joker apparently a harass a little eight year year old. Talk to her over the cameras really thoroughly disgusting stuff but Ring better get a handle on what's going on here because there's apparently so well known tools that allow these cameras to be easily accessed and It seems to be increasing in Dan. What people are doing instead of just probably observing? So you know I got an issue right now with the with the ring stuff I think maybe you should Consider discontinuing use of those for a little while and see if we can figure out if they're going to get those fixed for sure. Make sure that you're not using any type of credentials for for that log in that you're using anywhere else. I think that's super super critical at this point with these cameras. Change Your Password. Anyway if you haven't a while so if you get a ring doorbell ring camera in again that's nest that was originally Stuff so beware of that okay and Anyway we'll let's see what happens. if this continues or for starts to to get shut down so Keep advised on that or the time but for now our you know. Take those extra steps. Apple's new parental control system on IOS will it's communication limited featuring Iowa's thirteen point three. He has some bugs in the kids are finding a way around it. So apple confirmed CNBC working on fixes. But it's not good. Look for a company that provides it softened run security and privacy especially when the bugs and feature designed in part to protect kids and there is a way a couple of ways to bypass can medication limits though. They apparently only work at the phones. Contacts are not stored on I cloud and CNBC configured communication limits. So an iphone phone wasn't supposed to be able to communicate with the number. That wasn't already in the phone's address book but it would and they were able to bypass and do a couple of things. So it's apple. I'm sure we'll get on this in a hurry in and get this fix but It doesn't really work and bigger the news today. The FTC is seeking an injunction against facebook over at Howitt's APPs interact. These are antitrust concerns and basically weekly. What they're looking at here is how products interact and what they allow other products to do the interact with them so this really comes to to fruition the action by the FTC would focus on facebook's policies concerning how an integrates its apps allows them to work with potential rivals alongside its core social network facebook key products also include of course instagram messenger and what's APP so this potential? FTC action would likely seek to to block facebook from enforcing these policies on the grounds that they're anti competitive so an injection could seek to bar facebook from further integrating absent federal regulators. Here's might look to unwind as part of potential future break-up of the company so a majority of the five member FDIC would need to seek an injunction which the commission would need to file suit in federal court to obtain the FTC. Declined to comment so we may see something come on this in in February so their woes do not end while up.
