"Podcast. I was pushing a negative G's upside down and all of a sudden I was soaked in gasoline when I was inverted at about 1500 feet. So I immediately looked the airplane right side up and when I did that, all the fuel went down through me and went down to the floorboard and the steel caught on fire inside the cockpit. Welcome to another edition of there I was. A podcast where we put you in the cockpit with pilots and demanding situations and we learn how to flew out of them. I'm your host Richard mcfadden. Today's guest is Henry caffeine, Henry's been flying for over 40 years and has got over 8000 hours all of it in general aviation flying. He's flown and owned everything from an ultra light up to a citation jet and currently he's a part owner in an albatross. Owns a cirrus, a pipistrel, a glider flyer. He's a commercial pilot with an instrument rating, a seaplane rating, a glider rating, and he holds a cessna 5 two 5 type rating. Henry also holds a surface level aerobatic waiver and is performed at airshows flying aerobatics in his edge 5 40 across the country. But today he's going to share a story with us of flying his edge 5 40 in an aerobatic routine when things went drastically wrong. Henry, thanks for joining us on the there I was podcast. Thank you very much for having me. Glad to be here. So Henry, you and I were introduced through our mutual friend Katie pribble and she told me the outline of your story, which was just fascinating so you mind share the story with our audience. No, sir, I'll be happy to tell you. So basically it happened a few days before Thanksgiving. I think maybe there's a little bit of a part of this puzzle that I might want to share with you as well. So the accident happened on November 24th and on October 19th, there was the massive floods down in South Texas and I had 16 feet of water go through my house and destroy my home. So I was living in San Antonio at the time because our house was being rebuilt and I had flown a team model bonanza over to a little small airfield outside of San Antonio where they found the movie the great Waldo pepper that's called zeal field, which is where they did steerman training back in the olden days and it's really close to Randolph Air Force Base. And that is where we had an aerobatic box. So I flew over there on a beautiful afternoon, a couple of days before Thanksgiving. Got into my edge by 40. And I had a pre fly the airplane, everything was great. It was perfect, perfect day. And I went out and started practicing what we call an aerobatics unknown maneuvers. I used to play advanced aerobatics for competition. And then I was working on a freestyle maneuver and then that freestyle maneuver, there is a negative G element within that sequence. And so I was pushing a negative G's upside down and all of a sudden I was soaked in gasoline when I was inverted at about 1500 feet. And so I immediately flipped the airplane right side up and when I did that, all the fuel went down through me and went down to the floorboard where we all have a plexiglass flow board so we can see aerobatic box and making sure that we're still within the parameters or where we are looking through for an air show. And the feel caught on fire inside the cockpit. At the time, I didn't know that the fire was only really inside the cockpit. And so I turned to magneto's off, nothing happened. I shipped a few off, nothing happened. By nothing happened, Henry, do you mean that the fire was still burning, so you were shutting all this stuff off and meanwhile. Can you give us a sense of so your right side up, but in your roughly 1500 feet somewhere in there, but you've got fire, is it all in the cockpit as in you can't even see out? Is it just in the floor? Can you help us? It's all in the cockpit. The whole cockpit. I had a pair of ray ban glasses on that actually melted. So I could only see out of the peripheral side of those old kind of Wayfair glasses. I could see out the sides. So yeah, the fire had soaked me in gasoline and then basically the whole fire was in the cockpit. So those edge 5 40 cockpits are pretty small and tight, so you're inside this cockpit and the whole thing is engulfed in flames. So you're sitting in the middle of this fireball basically. That's exactly right. And so not knowing that what was going on after shutting the magnetos, the feel, turning the key off, I knew that a problem we need to bail out. So in my particular airplane, it had a mechanism where you squeezed two metal rods together and that was supposed to release the Canopy and it would release and leave the aircraft. So I put the airplane in a dive at 1400 feet and I was having problems squeezing the getting it to release. Was it because the handle was so hot you couldn't grasp it and I'm also wondering, I'm just trying to picture myself sitting in this fireball with the intense heat that came all of a sudden and can you can you see your magnetos are all this is by feel and are you close on fire? Yeah. Yeah, everything's on fire when I landed on my clothes were burned pretty much off. I had a pair of no max shoes on and a no max helmet because I just gone from work a couple of days for Thanksgiving and I was in a short sleeve T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans and I had two nomads. I had golf gloves on. They were burned off to. So I could see fire. I couldn't see, you know, visually where I was in the space that I was in and certainly when I put the aircraft in a dive, the problem was opening the cockpit wasn't the heat, it was the pressure, the FAA said I was going somewhere around a 185 miles an hour when I was pointing the nose down. And so that became harder and harder to open the Canopy. But once the Canopy did open, they also said the doctor said that I inadvertently held my breath, which saved my lungs, I didn't know I did that, but evidently I did. And so when I got out of the airplane, I reached back for the D ring and it had melted away.

"Game. And and anybody who said it was too long now now right now. Don't tell me. It was too long in the playoffs. October baseball. We've been lucky. There's a ton of that. That has happened last twenty plus years. Do you have some favorite games. This is the cliche. Sports question favored games. That you attended or a part of our fash fifth down game. Which i hated but i was there and i remember arguing with my pal and your pal doug meadows We were sitting there talking about v down so that certainly sticks out. The kurt remember sitting alone watson gibson home run but there are just so many of those moments and i was in quincy Win team usa. I'd never watched a hockey game in my life team. Usa beaten the russians. And i felt a certain pride about that. Even though i couldn't explain to you until maybe a couple of years ago So yeah there's gosh there. And i also have enormous pain and most of my pain is associated with one man. His name is tom watson when he would lose. I would feel crummy for days when he would win. I was euphoric but it's kind of like gambling. I found out that the winning isn't merely as great as the losing is hurtful to me so he was your guy because he was kansas city. That's the only reason martin. That's it he was up and coming back in the middle seventies. When i started really fallen in love with golf. He was a guy who could play with jack. Nicholson beat him and all the other guys and there are some great golfers there but he was from kansas city. So i knew he was in. I y payne stewart. I'd known about pain since seventy two because springfield news leader covered him and so i knew he was great. We have kim branson beeping. Stuart didn't give a damn about golf. He'd go out with a five iron and shoot even par with that club but then he wound up playing Pain i think he was a sophomore. Junior beat him in the state championship. Thought damn says a pretty good. But watson was my guy and i got deeply into him and to golf and i still and he had a lot of high moment just when he would lose. They were pretty painful. The nature golf is. You're gonna lose far more times win. It's like hitting your on a huge success if you fail seven times out of ten golf you're not gonna win much. He won plenty but still you look at his record. I think he's probably one forty thirty. Nine pg tournaments forty pg tournaments right around there couple more around the world seniors stores. But he's not those majors and what he did in. Those majors was cool. Turnberry with nicholas pebble beach chip in the thing is though and this goes back to remembering a bad things over good. I can remember crummy shots at. He hid far more vividly than i remember. Great moments is so. You're going to play some golf. I suspect what else you i'm gonna so what. What are you excited about this next chapter. Yeah i think so. I've got plans in my head. I I i'm a little timid about bringing them forward just in case i just think back to fan shows that you're telling no no i'm not doing a podcast telling me i'm not doing podcasts. With the i'm not doing that I would like to play my guitar in a bar and see if i could make a little money on the side. I think i'd like to. It'd be great fun i would love to and you got the name. People know you can sing and entertain. I can sing. I don't know that i can play guitar. Well enough and my style of singing may not be conducive to We'll see conducive to plan. I am more vocal I don't i don't have a real country twang. I'd folks maybe folks. I hope folks folksy works. i think. But i'm i'm a little. I'm i'm great with church songs. Hell ever while. I think i sang it. Every wedding. and branson from about nineteen seventy three to nineteen seventy seven. I don't think we're winning went by that. I didn't sing it. You realize we just broke some news. This'll be the all the other shit we talked about. I'll give rich school. Says he's picking up guitar and hitting the road the headline gonna try. I'm to see if i can get it down. The bad thing though is i can't remember the lyrics to any song can play a bunch of them but actually remembering the lyrics to songs. Forget it so. I'm going to have to have one of those. Music stands at a book with my head in the book and it just looks crummy when you sign off for the last time. Will it be good bye. Good people always logan people. You know where i got. That as much as watson is a hero of mine. Robert redford is equal to or greater than tom watson. He is my movie and the movie the great waldo pepper. He plays waldo pepper. And he'd get out there with a big smile as he was flying. Those won't barnstorming planes and go. Hello good people nobody else see in it and not that many people saw that movie. Probably everyone's going to google waldo pepper. Good let them and watch the movie. I loved it so the new weather guys named waldo pepper. Is that right. So i am That's what i said that. I the only time i say it's on sunday. Night will rich. It's been a lot of fun i would describing you to people. i'd say. richest a hoot. He likes to have fun folksy guitar stories. If if there's anything. I would tell people about this business which i don't know if it's gonna last much longer it's to have fun there Of people in this game that take it way too seriously. I mean who gives a shit rich guys out there playing ball. I i enjoy the competition. But i don't care how much money molina makes sure as hell member going to worry about some sort of contract negotiation. That tarasenko has coming up. I just don't care get out there. Put a uniform avi scores. You cheer. that's what's fom. How about that at the very end. Little deep t.'s. Local rich might be out there. Donal sing a little performing around. Could see him. I could see that being a thing you know. Maybe a bar on mainstream saint charles than couple nights. Later down on sue lard. I just. I think this might be a good second act for uncle rich. I'd forgotten about him doing bragging rights games. He is eddie Fascinating life to say the least. We wish rich. "And there's a list if you haven't even if you picked up the beavers i don't even. I didn't even look at that story. But it's got airplanes and beavers in the title so you guys have heard Well you've been out here and talk about. The big ditch runs around wichita. Yeah it runs right along the east side of the mid continent airport or eisenhower's i call it now. Well somebody use it as an emergency runway. Put an airplane in it. When was getting it out of. There's gotta be an interesting process. Yeah david wendy. When does happen just the other day I didn't get enough of a report to know whether that was this morning but it looked like it was yesterday yesterday evening and i imagine when i dive into it and get the details and find out that the guy was on approach to the airport or climbing out of the airport Because the big ditch is just right there underneath your when you're coming in and lots of open space nothing smooth yeah nothing. I'd wanna landed a tricycle area but and it looks like a light sport. The little photograph that the website had showed a canopy bubble canopy and two of torri really thin long propeller blades. So i'm betting it's an experimental or light sport and i'll tell you many got are just got to be careful flying these little airplanes. I know really. It's just you know if god meant for you know it's Yeah as far as the gore smooth ground is concerned. I don't know maybe the guy wasn't familiar with the for being on the ground. Because i would imagine from. The air looks pretty enticing. I would imagine this from long straight dry stretches that said there's my spot right there and and it's only when you get down on short final and you go well. Maybe i'm going around. No i guess not. So yeah i take it out but otherwise it was a relatively successful forced landing from no no injuries. Nobody went to hospital. No word on the airplane shape. Yeah i'll i saw a little bullet going and i'll dive into that afterward on interesting. Did you guys he this. So it's the second item on the list. Here what is it yeah. I queued up for that too. Is it is. Is this a real all right. So according to this story this particular guy in this particular airplane. Are we rolling yet aware. Been rolling for awhile now. We got david story. And we're yeah. We're just segue saying this is going to be. This is going to be a free form thursday. You go george. Yeah really yeah. Earn your editing money this week so according to a catherine's report which as i understand it as a fairly reputable it's consistent about that consistent. Anyways story here is this guy. One particular guy in one particular airplane managed to crash it. And i'm going to use the word crash crash. The airplane four times in eight days. I i just i mean. Let's just put aside for a second. What this the questions. This raises about his piloting skills. Okay let's just say that after the second crash i probably wouldn't fly for a little while. Okay i've had enough for now. I'm going to stop. You're you've got this teed up jeb in what regard. Tell us what he's not. I have something similar you do. Have you crashed four times and eight now no something something that was in a most recent aviation safety yeah have quotes from. Ntsb you wanna go. I'll read them right now. Please do so we didn't. We didn't really got it in detail about this guy. These quotes are about this guy. This guy about a different airplane. Okay go ahead but looking at catherine's report here. Yeah for crash. Four times incident or accident substantial damage in one of them before like third. Second one or something. I you know. And the guy ended up ditching in michigan or something so anyway these are direct quotes from the ntsb. Okay quote to empty beer. Cans were found in the front left. Floorboard area near the rudder. Pedals a rodents nest was found inside the left wing. A significant amount of cobwebs were observed in the engine compartment the airbox was clear of obstructions a large mud. Dubber nest was found in the fence of the oil cooler. Okay the lt was found in place with battery. Acid residue on the outside of the case on automotive battery was installed in the airplane. That's a direct quote from the ntsb and to top it all off. He had automotive hose running from the gas collider to the carburetors clearly like an automatic a hydraulic cho's manufactured in july twenty thirteen according to the end esp And what brought the airplane was quote. Organic debris similar to insect cocoons was found in the fuel stranger which was mostly full of liquid consistent with one hundred lowland fuel tested negative for water mostly consistent with one under lola. Because that's what i'm going for. You know what i what. I'm yes my fuel. The guy's blood alcohol was was elevated. Show he said. That's that's what alcohol was also mostly consistent with one hundred. He was killed. Sadly okay all right. Now we're making wave you've done to me now but but still i mean come on the way titled this was was every rule book but He had three passengers. they all survived. Well okay that's good. I mean right. Yeah wow mostly consistent with one hundred yeah. Yeah so i mean there's a lot of crazy stuff out so yeah. There are people who i see. You know. I don't know in pop culture. Some might consider this to be romantic. This is kind of like yeah. You know the the the barnstorming pilots you know. It's like robert redford fixed. The wing abs airplane with a piece of his handkerchief and strip of duct tape. You know i mean right. That's from the movie. he did that. And that was you know is that was showing that that that What was his characters name in that. Movie waldo pepper waldo over waldo pepper. Was there had the right stuff right. You know and maybe no. Maybe we shouldn't do this. the four four crashes in eight days guy. Let's see now. And this is recent. This is just recent. June twenty six twenty one aircraft landed gear up at bracket field. Airport in laverne..
