Canary Speech Uses Voice to Identify Human Conditions Across Multiple Applications
"Canary speech technology is currently commercially available. It's practical and scalable. We range in population sizes from a few thousand to hundreds of thousands of individuals within the population that we're monitoring and scoring. We have a range of different human conditions, stress anxiety, depression, we've had probably the most extensive use with. We've done some work in PTSD as well. Second to that we have a lot of work done in MCI Alzheimer's and cognitive function and decline. In this particular case, we currently have four clinical partners in different locations in the world where we are doing validation studies on Alzheimer's and cognitive measurements. And then of course, employee burnout, things like congestive heart failure, autism and others are ones that are being worked on as well. I've talked about our patents, we have new patents we're applying for things that we've been learning through these studies. And then our speech analysis as we mentioned before is done generally on 40 seconds to a minute of speech. And we return scored through our system within three seconds of time. Our partners range across the world. I've talked about hack attack meridian. I'm going to talk a little bit more about them later. Black Doctors Use Social Media To Share Accurate Information About COVID-19 Vaccine
"The American public is hesitant to get a covert 19 vex. That number goes up to a third of Black Americans, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation poll last month. Hesitancy is rooted in real mistreatment and fanned by myths and misinformation, as NPR's Ping Wang reports some black doctors or finding creative ways to encourage vaccine acceptance. Well, very few vaccine safety problems have been reported. A lot of rumors are still floating online doctor Krista Marie Coleman has been tackling Cove admits on Tic Tac. She's the family physician in Orlando, and she describes one of the recent short video she made to counter misinformation. So yeah, so with the video I I'm using a trending song that people can relate to and as we can here with the song, it says, no, That's not true. So I say the covert vaccine will make you infertile, and I say that's not true. She posted the top second video in early December, and it's been viewed more than half a million times. And then I do a dance at the end, which people can relate to as well. A recent study published in the annals of Internal Medicine, like that public Health Message is geared at communities of color. Learn. It showed that black Americans are more receptive to information. If it comes from black doctors like Coleman. For some people, it means a lot when it comes from someone who looks like them. When it comes from someone who speaks like them. But only 5% of physicians in the U. S are black. Robert Drummond is another black doctor that's turned to social media to share accurate information. More broadly, he's an urgent care physician in Los Angeles, and in a recent Instagram live chat, he noted another big reason why people are wary of covert vaccines. With TV actor Dondre Whitfield's first Let me start by acknowledging the mistrust and acknowledging and understanding that there actually is a very real basis for that mistrust Well, said this deep distrust because that to the history of medical experimentation on slaves. It also goes back to the mid 19 hundreds when black men were deliberately not treated for syphilis. So researchers could see what would happen and it comes up to the present day. Just last week, a black doctor named Susan Moore died from covert 19 after alleging poor treatment at the hospital. When she asked for more pain medication, she said her white doctor made her feel like a drug addict. In the Instagram chat. Drummond pointed to a survey a couple years ago showing that a lot of doctors still wrongly believe that African Americans have a higher tolerance for pain. Everything from the top. We have thicker skin than two. We have a reduced we haven't heightened pain threshold so we don't need as much medication. This thing This is not from 19 hundreds. This is right in the 19 sixties. This is from the lake to thousands right now. As a black man, his part of the medical establishment, Drummond says his job is not to tell people to get vaccines. And said he wants to help people make their own informed decisions. But not everyone lives online. Alison Matthews, a sociologist at Wake Forest University, is researching how to increase trust in covert vaccines. In addition to the Internet, we've used conference wines as well, Azaz Mailed stuff out to people. You have to meet people where they are, in whatever level of communication is the most convenient for them. Matthew says that beyond black doctors, there are other community leaders that are trusted for advice. She works with black church leaders and sororities and civil rights groups. To generating trust in the health system is not a new challenge in the black community, says Dr Lisa Cooper, who directs the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity. Even before Cove, it 19 came up. A lot of the work that I did to try to address disparities in health care was focused on Having African Americans and people who are traditionally not given the sense of power and control in their healthcare play a more active role. For Cooper. The challenge is not just about overcoming vaccine hesitancy. It's for the medical community to learn how to build real trust. Ping

This is just the periodical of college football right now, With rain, chipping and Mike reach and Deon Sanders with your weekly college football picks. I think about it, because obviously I sell means you're getting a bargain. But I think I'd buy out race sorts first. Thank you. Super Day Super Dave went to 11 last week a winning week. He's 12 15 and one on the season, trailing Barraza. 16 and 11 years old. He is also informed us that he is crushing apples at a record rate. He loves Apple stores them in his fridge for months on end. How many apples approximately, would you say are residing in your fridge right now, Super Dave. Maybe, uh 40 or 50. And when will you be done with those 40 or 50? Probably by the end of next week, Okay? You say that so casually. I had to think about it, but I figured, you know, 34 a day. Do the math. That's about right. Well, you had a two in one week last week. So let's jump back into this. We've got Wake Forest and U N. C. Mac Brown shut down the season now. You're like in the Deeks plus 13.5. I just think it's too many points. What makes North Carolina so good? They're five and two and their next three games there, Wake Forest and Notre Dame and Miami and they could be five and five. After that. I mean, they've got a decent win over Virginia Tech. Guess what? Wake Forest beat that same team. Losses against Florida State in Virginia aren't particularly impressive. Honestly. Wake Forest, who's won four straight has about the same resume as North Carolina wake beat this team last year. You and sees defense is playing poorly waking second in the country and turnover margin. Deacons have not thrown an interception. Picked off 11 passes. I just don't get it. UNC is undisciplined. They commit penalties of housing and special teams. I mean, they're a very okay. Pretty good, Not bad. A C C team. I think Wake Forest is not all that far behind them, and you're getting almost two touchdowns. It's kind of a crazy number for me. Wait, running back Kenneth Walker, the third by the Way, D a 11 rushing scores this year, the program record 1964 15 the single season. Brian Piccolo Great factory in the Big 10, Indiana, Michigan State. This is in my tasty top five. The Hoosiers are ranked number 10 in the country. They're three and Oh, there are touchdown favorite and in East Lansing and Michigan State. Tom Allen getting national coach of the year Buzz You like the Hoosiers Land seven. Yeah, I mean home, Alan, what an amazing story. 15 years as a high school football coach most of that Nona's a head coach, but a defensive coordinator, worked small schools Nobody's ever heard of. And then I linked up with Hugh Freeze, who's having a great year? Liberty as well spent time with him. At Arkansas State and all Miss jumped itself Florida and then went to Indiana. The defensive coordinator got the job when Kevin Wilson resigned and he's just Had only built Indiana into a pretty good team. I mean, they were eight and five last year, they didn't have any about the boss's. Meanwhile, Michigan State's program is just going The wrong way. Well, Indiana is beating 10 State and Michigan Tense day on Michigan State is losing tow Rutgers and just getting annihilated by Iowa. I think Indiana has Better players. I think they are playing better their quarterback, Michael Pinex, junior aide and one as a starter. This is the best ranking for Indiana to 1969. I'm just not being anything in Michigan seats. It tells me they're ready to play with a team that if not a legitimate top 10 team is certainly One of the 15 or 20 best teams in the country. Certainly one of the best of the big 10 this year. And finally to Lane and army. This is so interesting. Already, Army has accepted a bid to the Independence Bowl. What motivation is left You like two lane laying four tomorrow. I mean, when you beat Mercer and your army, you can celebrate your going to the Indian bunions. Balls like like this Good army is six and one, but they're fraudulent. They have six wins against teams that are a combined seven and 28. They've played one good team Cincinnati.
Choosing A College When You Don't Know Your Major
"It might surprise you to know that fifty percent of students enter College as Undeclared Majors undecided or Undead. Layered refers to an admitted or an enrolled student who has not yet selected a major now while there's nothing wrong with being Undeclared. It does mean that you have to ask yourself different questions about your building your college list. For example, you would need to think about which schools are best for undecided students. What makes a good college for undecided majors and should I go to a college with a lot of Majors or apply to specific schools many different types of schools. So what does it mean to be undecided again off when you apply and you haven't selected a major and a major is an area of study that you pursue through your course work. For instance. If you're a history major, you're going to take a majority took courses in history. And if you're an engineering major, you're going to spend a lot of time taking engineering classes and upper level math classes. So one thing I want you to know that job Being an undecided major is temporary. You don't graduate from college undecided the purpose of coming in as an undecided or Undeclared major is to get the student time to decide on what they truly want to major in before they have to declare it now different schools have different times when a student needs to declare their major and maybe at the end of their first year or the beginning of their second year and there are some schools that allow you up to your junior year to declare your major. Now, I do want you to know that being undecided wage doesn't mean that you can't build your list. It just means that you have a different checklist and a different criteria for picking your universities. So let's talk about things that you need to consider as an Undeclared major. So number one decide on the location. Do you want to stay close to home or are you willing to travel a distance to get your education wage? This could open up possibilities as you're thinking through your college list. So decide on the limits of how far you're willing to travel is a necessary First Step number to think about your in-game. So what is your ultimate career goal? And even if you're not very clear on exactly what it is you want to do think about a general area or some common themes about what it is that you want to do and then begin to write down a list of all of the majors that will help you get to that career goal. So, you know, if you want to start college Undeclared and you're thinking about, you know, various Majors many different majors and you can't just pick one then you might benefit from options provided by larger University so that you have more Majors from which to choose so try to find a school that offers a great number of authors. Ends that you're potentially interested in and then that way as you're taking some of your first year courses your core courses it gives you time to think through exactly what it is that you want to change number three consider an open curriculum college. Now, there are some colleges with what's called an open curriculum program is designed to enable students to develop their own program of study with the help of Faculty advisors. So schools like Amherst Brown Wake Forest vs are offer Open golf program. So you go in and you really go in Undeclared and you're allowed to build your course of study with the help of your advisor off. So, you know think again about those types of colleges on your list number four, and I think this one's really important but make sure you have support Wrap-around support services. So there are some colleges that have advising for Undeclared undecided majors and it's really important to make sure that you know the schools on your list do Provide support for students who check that box on their application as undistracted or Undeclared schools such as University of Maine and also USC University of Southern California. They have very strong Undeclared advising for students to help them begin to think about what it is that they want to do number five think about extracurricular activities, you know, you you're thinking of, you know, don't just focus on the program of study. But if you're as you're looking at schools, you want to take a look at the types of wage Opportunities and experiences experiences that you can have through society's through professional organizations. For example, let's say you'll enjoy writing but you're not exactly sure what you want to do with that. Well, maybe there's a campus magazine or journalism club or a college paper. Those are all great ways for them to explore writing a little bit more to see the type of writing a major you may be interested in pursuing. So it's important to get some of that real life experience and you can use the extra curricular activities as ways to do some Discovery as well as Co-op experiences research opportunities and jobs internships any kind of hands-on experience and positions that will allow you to discover a little bit more what it is that you may want to do Thursday.

The story of Trevor Lawrence's life-changing summer
"So we just discussed how Trevor Lawrence is influence has been growing this off season I taking on issues of public health and racial inequality. But last month. The very thing that gives Trevor Lawrence his enormous Megaphone College football was put in jeopardy as players in conferences. Having. These discussions about canceling the season. What role in those discussions did Trevor Lawrence play. It was a Sunday night early August enduring. Trevor. Together again. There at travers fiancee's apartment and rumours are starting to pick up steam that some of the biggest most powerful conferences in college football the Big Ten PAC twelve that they're seriously considering, postponing their fall season, and this is coming at the end of a week. When of PAC twelve players have released a statement on the Players Tribune using the Hashtag we are united. And they've threatened to out fall CAM even opt out of games unless the conference mixed their demands for fair treatment and safety regulations and less the conference addresses concerns over racial justice, and meanwhile on a nearly parallel track, you have players the cost, the country, trevor, and fluted tweeting the Hashtag. We want to wait to express their desire to keep the seasonal live. So, in the Sunday night when it feels like college ball is teetering, it's actually dairying who decides to reach out to Dylan bowls. One of the players the Pactel's we are United Movement because endearing mine Houston gain. If we all join together the players in the we are united movement and the players in the we want to play movement that would be undeniably powerful for players who don't have concrete power who don't have a real seat at the table at least not yet their collective voice with the really hard to ignore because truly. So many of these fires want the same thing they want to play football this fall, they just want to do it in a safe responsible way. Dylan Daring, trevor they get on a three way facetime called a hash all this out to make sure they're all on the same page and that very quickly evolves into a zoom call with a dozen or so some of the biggest names in college football right Justin fields chew behind nausea. Harris And matter of thirty minutes, they agree to roll out a list of demands from this new fused Mecca Movement. It was amazing. How quickly we all got on the same page put something together I feel like the majority was getting spoken for. And we were like, Hey, we WANNA play. We want it to be safe but we do to take a watt mandated and universal safety procedures for Covid nineteen and they want to form players association. And it pretty much the stroke of midnight. These players, Tweeden Unison. But it's trevor naturally whose tweet is hurt the loudest he's re tweeted some fifteen thousand times including one quote tweet from President Donald Trump, and it's just a few days later actually that someone from the White House reaches out to Amanda Lawrence Trevor Lines mom letting her know that the president would like to get in touch with trevor. So hold on. So he has the president of the United States listening to him. Now let alone all of his peers across college football. What was that conversation with Donald Trump? Like? You know I would have loved to be a fly on whatever wall in whichever room that phone call took place the president has said really that trevor just reiterated his desire to play this season but trevor for his part hasn't divulged too much about that phone call. Conversation it was good I mean we just talked about kind of the whole we talked about that. We WanNA play like how's it going? How's it looking for the season and? president trump was just saying, yeah, I think our country needs college football and. then. Some small talk. Yes. We a little bit about what was going on in my life and vice versa. So that was pretty much the conversation though trevor is twenty years old the president of the United States wanted to speak to him. That is remarkable crazy. No matter which way you cut it. So. Let's recap here Halley Grossman because since March Trevor, Lawrence Age Twenty has faced pressure to help mitigate a global pandemic fight racism save the College football season display a level of political savvy and or gamesmanship that is obviously well beyond his years. So what else can you possibly be asked to do at this point? I mean look putting your stamp of approval which he's done on a list of demands that includes creating players. Association is a big deal. That's a radical way to reimagined that amateurism model that governs. College football right now but I think what this summer has shown is that trevor doesn't plan to quiet down you just a few days ago a whole lot of guys that original zoom call we talked about reconvened because they revealing again from a police shooting of a black man again, and so in the days after Jacob, Blake was shot. Trevor and Darien and Dylan, and a whole host of others talked once again to hammer out ways to help to draw attention to the issue and hopefully bring change. Trevor Lawrence football season is starting tomorrow and if all goes according to plan. He's GonNa win the heisman before becoming the first overall pick in next year's NFL draft teams have been salivating over his talent. There have been rumors that teams might even want to tank for Trevor Lawrence this season. So the question really that is, why is he even putting himself out there like this? Why even play the season? I mean that is the question, right? We have seen plenty a high profile opt-outs this season jomar chase at Lsu. Mike Parsons at Penn State today. Oregon. These are first round top ten NFL draft guys but no one literally nobody has less to lose by not playing the twenty twenty football season than Trevor Lawrence. are in a player having a job borough like. Or I don't know an asteroid hitting the earth, his Cossacks to go number one overall are safe, and at the same time, no one has less to gain by paddling the status quo or shaking up the current system than trevor does this system works just fine for him? He is a young white man. He's a young white quarterback, and so I asked Amanda, his mother that seems washing. Why? Why do all this? I put himself out there and she said something interesting she said look. there. are players out there who do need to even if trevor doesn't and there are people out there for whom the status quo and the current system don't work even if it works for him and he understands that now probably better than he ever has and he just wants to help. That's really it know told me one of his goals for the senior only meeting because he wanted everyone to understand that unless everyone is good no one is good and trevor, his best friend took that to heart. Of the day, there's so much division in our country. Just word of some people that WanNa see people together, WanNa see people love each other and I think that's where a lot of the things I do. It stems from that just wanted to see people happy together not divided. With all this pressure now from all of these different places in our country. Landing Atop. Trevor Lawrence's shoulders. What are you personally expect from him when the season starts? Because of the ways in which Trevor Lawrence has stepped onto center stage this summer it's almost easy to forget what it is. That gives him that stage in the first place, he is extremely good at his job. Term Lawrence is an excellent quarterback. Making predictions in two, thousand, twenty, hundred, probably a fools errand. But tomorrow, there's football comes we'll pay wake forest, and if clemson continues to play if they and the ACC and the big twelve and sec are able to play a full season, don't be surprised to see Trevor Lawrence back on the national championship stage. Don't be surprised to see Trevor Lifting the national championship trophy and along the way don't be surprised to see trevor continuing to speak out and perhaps that's one of the safest predictions you can make in twenty twenty. Life to be reflection of what I say and what I believe I've been thinking about everything that's going on and I think there has been some some moments where I had to say some things because it's just the right thing to do and it's time really is just how I live my life I want it to reflect what I say. I. Would always be the same person I want to be consisted. Eliot Grossman. Thank you for jumping on stage with. US. Thank you so much for having me. Pablo.
COVID-19 concerns prompt Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman to opt out of 2020 season
"There has been some very big news in the SEC earlier today coming out of Athens Georgia were Jamie Newman who had transferred from wake forest expected to be the star of the high flying dogs announced. He is opting out because of covert or certainly a lot of conversation about that and we caught up earlier in the program with Mike Griffiths. Part of the reason he was coming to Georgia was to play more a pro style offense and group those potential NFL skills and you know I think he's been able to work in that offense, and now there isn't worth yet you know there's always the risk of injury with ten game schedule. Last year, you make it through the season had a shoulder injury, the poorest mrfloor state. Now, he's looking down the barrel of a ten game schedule. He's got a guy on his heels that. My overtaken for the position and JT Daniels. You know how does that look? NFL Scouts so I think this is the safe decision maybe per for Newman if you have concerns about cove nineteen or losing your job or or getting re injured, let's face it. It's a really physically Paul I mean there was only four out of fourteen teams in the league last year that had a quarterback started every game and that was an eight game season. Now, you're looking at a ten game season.
"You've got shared lady Gaga. There's this stereotype that has long permeated lesbian culture. And it's that Lesbians Love Cameo in fact auto straddle did a survey about it and found that lesbians are more likely to own cats than any other group of People. I wouldn't know as I myself am a dog bisexual so I hit up Dr Rachel Cordesman. Visiting professor in women's Gender and Sexuality Studies at Wake Forest University. She curated an exhibition all about lesbians in cats by Harry. Cats have a lot of associations with southern entity and often kind of dangerous or deviant forms of feminine any so because of Lake Association so cats switches association so flake cats even with like pejorative terms for China after the nineteen seventies the sort of a defiant reclamation of cats with an different lesbians cultures lesbian feminist for reclaiming hats and now furthering this educational moment our final coup weary question number. "wake forest" Discussed on CBS Sports Eye On College Basketball Podcast
"Honestly it's a commentary on how out of hand the entire industry and businesses gotten and you can use the wake forest calamity as a microcosm to just the entire entire complex at the like is. It shouldn't be at this point and I don't think I don't think that schools actually. This is think schools will have the leverage. Say We can't we're not gonNA just. We can't do this anymore when you're when we're GONNA look up in a few weeks and a few months and see basically almost every single coach of men's basketball take certain pay-cut for certain amount of time Schools that have to cut sports this that and the other I might be naive perish. You know I'm not gonNA pretend to sit here and know every single thing but I just don't see how we can go back to the way and it and it frankly it shouldn't be that way to begin with When you have the numbers that are that are this big four coach like Manning who oh by. The way never even got past the first round of the tournament in his coaching dating back to his time at Tulsi here the numbers from when he was at wake forest twelve thirteen ten fourteen. Thirteen thirteen double digits. Those are where wake. That's where wake forest finished every single season in the ACC the corresponding winds and conference. Five two nine four four six so when you step back two months ago wake forest parting ways with Danny Manning was not an expected thing but among the most attract and discuss things the biggest the biggest attachment or unknown was can they do it given the size of this buyout. Which depending on who you talk to was. Maybe it's GONNA be as low as six if you can get the start of. May or I heard the highest number I had heard prior to today was twelve regardless huge number and now that they're doing a here I it's it's it's damn interesting and opens up a candidate pool where we into the names but I think actually Potential replacements Make sense but I'll be interested to see the deals. Those get in this in this new circumstance find ourselves. Gp There's going to be the first higher by a power conference program in football or men's basketball since corona virus hit so we're talking years and money figures and depending on what kind of coach they can land as well. Yeah so. Let's get into the possible candidates to replace Danny Manning at a wake forest and I do think The economy that we're all now living in we'll play a role in this like. I don't know how you can. Whatever Danny's exact buyout is like we know it's a lot of money and so now you're probably going to be shopping for a mid major coach and there's some really qualified candidates available. And here's the thing. All the mid major coaches make a certain amount of money. They'll all jump for. I should say all job but like you I ask somebody this morning and I said what do you think for Jobs GonNa pay and they said about a million and a half the guys they're going to shop for they can get for a million and a half so you know something along those lines and so the the four names getting the most attention right now at the mid major level are Steve Forbes at East Tennessee State West Miller at Greensboro Pat Kelsey at winthrop and Ryan Odem at UNBC. And what's fascinating is that they all have real ties to the wake forest situation. Forbes worked with John Currie the athletic director when he was on Bruce Pearl staff at Tennessee. They have a relationship a West Miller. The wait for the basketball facility is named the Miller Center after his father. Kim Miller's is dad's a trustee played baseball at wake and Google and Kim Miller Kenneth Miller just reading about him and he's described in one place as one awake force quote. Most generous donors. So that's a stronger connected as you get a Pat Kelsey of course worked for skip prosser at wake forest and Ryan. Odom is his father. Dave Odem lead what you could reasonably called like the best years of ways the the best coach in wake forest history. Yes there you go so You got four legitimate mid major options and they all have real ties either to the school or to the person making the higher. So that's a pretty. That's a pretty fascinating thing. It is an interesting list here and we'll see if others First of all I'd love. Tim Duncan to be the coach. I'm just going to say I know it's not just I think I think that's the best possible outcome for everyone here Timmy come on down. Among the names you mentioned and we'll see if any others surface If you WANNA locally at another coach he's been pretty solid. I think earl grant at Carl's Charleston Certainly done well Poverty at firm and I. I don't think that you know he's certainly in the mix but he's he's done a good job at Furman and that's that's right there in the Carolinas as well so I would. I would bet I would bet a good amount of money that the knicks coach at wake forest will be one of the four people named so four. Obviously has the strongest resume. He's not someone who I immediately like. He's not a fish out of water. Wake forest urban strange hires Sometimes you hear names attached to jobs like you hear the you know what's the fit there? Sometimes I think fit can be understated. Sometimes I think it can be overstated. I would be intrigued by the Steve. Forbes fit at Wake Forest. Would you agree? Gp If the point you're making is that Forbes doesn't seem like a quote unquote wake forest. Guy I I hear you. I think four would probably acknowledge that but I don't care about I. I shouldn't say care about fit at all. I Care I think fit way down the list of things that are important because the the most important thing is like can the guy do the job they can. The Guy do the job. I remember when Andy Field got hired at USC. People can debate whether it's been good or bad but like all these years later he still hired. He's still the coach and recruiting recruiting at a high level and was going to the NCAA. Tournament should be instantly tournament next season. I remember people talking about fit. Like how does it fit? He has no California ties never worked west of the whatever I was like. If the guy's good at work and like its work. Yes I know he had an FBI scandal guy. I hear you but it's it's worked and I would say the same thing about Forbes with basically any job like I think he can do he. I think do the job. He's one hundred thirty games in six years like he's he's going to have another awesome team at East Tennessee state next season. If he's east Tennessee state like I is he is he a perfect fit. I hear you could. He do the job I think so. Yeah I think that he's certainly capable of doing it. And sometimes yeah sometimes it can go terribly awry and sometimes it can work extremely well and it's not even necessarily geography base. Like a you know. Chris. Mullin was a bad fit at saint. John's and you would have never thought that would have been the case there so So we wait and see on all of that. There was a bad fit at saint. John's just be a bad fit anywhere right. He wouldn't be a successful division. One coach certainly certainly could be the case so for the the bad fit in the profession. I I know it's it's it was. That was something that we got Golden Gate. Mike so everything worked out well Forbes is one hundred thirty and forty three with two automatic incidentally tournament visit five seasons at. Ats You only one tournament appearance. Because he did ATS. You did get the auto bid this year But yes so So that's something to consider. Odem is fascinating because you know. He's the he's the son of Dave. He's got the win over Virginia. I I think he's the least accomplished of the four but carries a good reputation. I would not any of these names possible. I would think that he is a you know. I would not think that he is going to be the leading candidate and the I would not put money on him. West Miller makes a ton of sense to me has done well with Greensboro. Had A has made the only tournament once actually had a solid case Podcast listeners will remember. We actually debated a number of interesting at large candidates a year ago. Greensboro actually had a really good case to get into the tournament last season. Nevertheless it didn't But he's He's been pretty solid they're And then Kelsey has been at his job the longest of any of these candidates eight years with winthrop and sixty three and ninety three one to auto bids like Forbes actually one in auto bid. This season obviously never got to play in the tournament. They're so from what I understand as of US recording this podcast there is no perceived front runner at this point but curry's connection to Forbes is certainly interesting Miller being just down the road Is is very interesting and what I wait and see on is. There's a search firm that's involved here venture partners. Yeah I don't know if that is going to mean that this is going to play out over the course of three five seven days also will note. Randolph childress is the interim coach. So we mentioned that there. He is a program legend his own. Right I wouldn't think that he would Step in to replace but again. Let's not try and talk above our heads here like Randolph childress today. Beloved figure in Wake Forest Basketball and The program do the right thing by by having him as the acting. Head coach here now You want to handle that situation with a lot of care. Okay because there aren't many outside of Tim. Duncan I'd say Randolph. Childress right up there. He was part of again. The greatest run in program history when it was coached by Dave Odom So here we are though I I did not think we'd get here I don't have a prediction on who I think is going to get the job Because I don't think there are clear indications at this point that we that we know one way or the other I would think that interviews will be held in a I would think a zoom type fashion over the next seventy two plus hours. And maybe we get more clarity mid week. I'm not sensing that this is GonNa be something that you know. We've published the podcast here for you on Saturday. And then if you're listening to it on a Monday morning the job will be filled. Obviously that's possible GP. But I'm not sensing that that's actually going to be the case of the four candidates. I mentioned like Steve. Forbes is the most accomplished Rhino Dems got the biggest wind need. Be As a sixteen seat. Pat Kelsey has got ties to the last time wake forest basketball was good. He was a part of that and West Miller. Dad's name is on a frigging building to me. That's that.
"wake forest" Discussed on CBS Sports Eye On College Basketball Podcast
"Danny Manning out at wake forest on April twenty fifth a Saturday. Tim Duncan's birthday. Who's going to replace manning? Who are the candidates? What does all this mean? What's even happening right now. Flick though sirens here we go scary parasitic Saturday April twenty two thousand twenty. Welcome back to the CBS sports eye on college basketball. Podcast where we sometimes discuss Campbell fighting and leaky Black Matt. Norlander is here with me and some breaking news this morning from the world of college basketball. Danny Manning is out after six seasons at wake forest. He went seventy eight when one eleven in those six seasons never finished above five hundred in the ACC went fourteen and forty two in the league in the past three seasons so yes danny was burned by some questionable early entries to the NBA draft. He's an awesome guy. Everybody likes him. I like him a lot but it is hard to argue with. Wake Making a coaching change from a performance perspective. In a business where you either get a donor. You don't get it done. The only question is the timing and the buyout I honestly thought the massive buyout plus the corona virus pandemic might save him. But nope norlander. Do you have any issues with wake forest? Making a coach and Jane Journey Pandemic on April Twenty fifth at the cost of reportedly fifteen million dollars. I got issues got plenty issues here. Let's get right into him first of all. This is a surprise. No one no one saw this coming. This was clearly decided upon by curry and wake forest brass from what I can tell Within the past seventy two hours Danny. Manning took a pay cut less than a week ago. That was publicly announced. Not just him. But of course as we're seeing across the country with so many athletic directors and coaches in revenue producing sports. Manning took that cut. He had made podcast appearances recently. Didn't think he was getting fired. Maybe only John Korean weak force is president. Thought that this was actually going to be a possibility as recently as even a week ago. So we'll start there. This was a surprise. This was not anticipated. In fact I even knock on some doors. I WANNA say recording the Saturday April twenty fifth. I think Friday the seventeenth. I just kind of made the rounds. It was like. Hey just so. We're clear like there's not any anticipated movement. Really all that much more in terms of coaching stuff and that was the case unless UPI OPS to no longer suspended search was what I was told things. We're going to be quite so that this is a surprise here. The buyout number which John Ross teen reporter was north of fifteen million. I had another person reach out to me and give me a fifteen point. Eight million number is absolutely absurd. I just there's a lot to get to I I would hope and I. It's not our money so whatever. Maybe I don't need to hope. Gp maybe some us for us to care but it's it's bad optics that the cove nineteen pandemic on top of Danny Manning reportedly presumably being paid more than fifteen million dollars to no longer coach at wake forest after getting to one. Incidentally Tournament will signal a massive reduction in these absolutely absurd by outnumbers shots to the agents. You're getting it done. You're done for coaches director. What the Hell Are you doing? This is an embarrassing number here. And while wake forest has a billion dollar plus endowments that money as I understand. It cannot be used to help pay out Danny Manning so to the wake forest boosters who have the pockets still that are deep enough to pay for this also shout out to you in the middle of a p endemic to make this happen but this came as a a relatively big surprise here and on Tim Duncan's birthday no less by the way. Are you aware that Tim Duncan he turns forty four today so he wouldn't be at the list of potential candidates top the list. But it'd be hilarious. If one day down the road we know. Tim Duncan is obviously wanting to get into coaching. And being involved with the Spurs seems to have a good set-up there if if in a backward way he got involved as well so yeah. There's there's been a lot happening here this morning and certainly it comes as a surprise and we have our first firing termination from a power conference school amid the corona virus pandemic and. That's something not really. No one thought was going to be possible as recently as three or four days ago. I believe the big fundamental is actually on Gregg Popovich staff in San Antonio and I'll be surprised if he is a candidate for the wake forest job. But I've been surprised before I will say I like you. Thought with the the amount of money involved here and the corona virus pandemic and the fact that like Danny was doing interviews about wake forest basketball like with few days ago. I just assumed he was safe but when I started asking around this morning I did have one person who is in the know what these types of things works in the industry and this person said that it had been heading this way for a while. Whatever that means and so either way it's over and while it is John Currie who has decided Or at least who is the Athletic Department director in charge of the Athletic Department? That has decided to replace Danny Manning at a pretty big number. It should be noted that its former a D Ron wellman. Yes who gave Danny Manning this contract extension and it is ridiculous and it was ridiculous when it happened. And I say this they fan of Danny Manning. First OFF RON. Wellman saying that Higher Jeff has now does delicate because they were buddies like Dezelic had gone thirty six and fifty eight and three seasons at Colorado finished twelfth twelfth in eight in the big twelve and got in his body hires him at wake forest. Right he goes one in fifteen in the ACC in year. One four hundred to six twelve and year. Three probably should've been gone right there. They bring him back. He goes six and twelve and year. Four now Ron. Wyden has gotTa make another coaching higher. He hires Danny Manning which is totally fine. Like I have no issues with the higher. Sometimes they work. Sometimes they didn't but I don't think you're going to be able to find evidence of ripping the high daily meaning higher when it was made. I'm pretty sure I rip the Jeff Zelic Higher and keeping Jeff Facility for your four. I don't think I had any issues with hiring Danny manning but to give him a contract extension in November two thousand seventeen. That now puts this number. Reportedly at fifteen million dollars is insanity. I focus on the month. I just said November two thousand seventeen. Why do you need to give Danny manning a six year contract extension in November two thousand seventeen like if if it was March? Two thousand seventeen and some big job was coming after him. Then maybe you got to do a deal to keep him at wake forest if you want to keep him at wake forest. But Nobody's making a coaching change in two thousand seventeen by the way the season had already started wake forest. Two and four workforce was two and four coming off of the nineteen fourteen season featuring a loss to Kansas state. In the first four and you give a six totally unnecessary six year contract extension to Dany Manning and now fast forward to April two thousand twenty. They're still five years left on the contract and it will cost. The school reportedly fifteen million dollars to buy out like that is insane it to me. I if wake forest. They don't hate Ron wellman forever. I don't understand at all what the hell in the name of Kyle. Visser is going on out here. That's just ridiculous and you know it's it's I'll give set Davis a shout out on something because I remember i. I remember him being as vocal about this. At the time as any person in the media first of all you know you lose skip. Prosser unexpectedly tragically in two thousand seven when at the time he is obviously the coach of wake forest and the program. It's it's doing decently enough. He was two years removed from a nice run events. Double A. Tournament's but regardless so then Dino Gaudio steps in and he becomes he becomes the coach he was an assistant under prosser when he tragically died unexpectedly in two thousand seven now. Gaudio is dismissed of in two thousand ten and he'd been on the job three seasons. He made the tournament. His second season made the tourney began. Its third season that third season. It wasn't underachieving. Wake forest team had Alpha Roca Myu Ish. Myth was on that team. Cj Harris it was a solid team. But they were they sputtered late and they. They parted ways with Gaudio to bring him his delic. And I remember seth at the time saying this is this is. He's been done wrong. This is a mistake and it has proved that has proven to be a a terrible decision on the heels of a true tragedy. I mean losing prosser Is the kind of loss where it can. It can just throw your program. Sideways fears. Gaudio was probably the best guy in that circumstance of bringing in replace them. Then you get rid of him too early. You bring up is Delic- then the sideways for Four Seasons. Then you bring in Manning. And he wasn't a bad hire key. It's been a couple of seasons at Tulsa and when he was hired it was thought this might be able to work. But as we've seen just the track record is what it is at this point. Gp Wake Forest for the most part for thirteen. Fourteen years has been in irrelevant program. It cannot find itself finishing above five hundred in the ACC for the most part with the exception of the two gaudio years other than that. It just hasn't been the case there and so now you're wake forest program that finds yourself paying out apparently north of fifteen million just like. I'm GonNa take that number for what's best. That's still an insane number to me. I almost need to see it on the paper to believe it. That's that's an all time. Terrible terrible deal on behalf of an institution and Athletic Director in terms of assigning. Like this. This should be the thing that eliminates huge buyouts going forward. We'll see if our economic situation dictates it for the next five to ten years. But now here's where wake forest finds itself and Manning I mean you know it is what it is. I'm sure he's going to be fine And he'll he has no shortage of options by the way wherever he wants to go In terms of take an assistant job or whatnot. He'll be good but yeah this is This is a big moment for workforce to try and get the right guy in there and turn the program back to. I would say relics relevancy within the League. Let alone nationally If the number is fifteen million. I believe that it would be the biggest by out. Ever paid to a men's basketball coach. There have been bigger college. Football buy outs. But I don't believe there's been bigger college basketball buyouts. Tubby Smith at Memphis was north of ten million. But I don't think I've ever heard anything at fifteen million dollars and again. I don't have any issue with coaches getting their money. Like I'm happy for him. I'm not pocket watching here but the stupidity from an Athletic Director's perspective to keep giving these massive contracts when you don't extensions when you don't have to do it like it's one thing if you're trying to hire a guy now. We know that you have to give him five years or six years or whatever but when you've got somebody under contract and it's November so he's not going anywhere is no leverage whatsoever. Why are you giving a six year contract extension in November to a guy who by the way best season is one thousand nine hundred fourteen and a loss in the first four right? What are what are we doing again? Let's let's play this out if it were march of two thousand seventeen days coming off an NCAA tournament appearance and a comparable job or a better job opens. And for whatever reason they want Danny Manning and Danny sitting there with an offer then you might have to go. Okay we gotta get a contract extension. I don't WanNA lose this guy. We've finally got our program back in a good place after the disastrous belic years. Okay let's get a contract extension dawn. I get that that happens every year and it makes sense but when nobody is coming after you in November why are you why? Why is it ethic drinker? Giving you a six year contract extension that is ultimately a appears. GonNa cost could down. The road cost fifty million dollars. Because that's where we are now. We are down the road like those. Are The decisions that I cannot believe? University presidents lead happen. I just know this if I run into university am I came to me in November and said okay. We finally got all the terms together paperwork right. We're going to get Danny to sign. We're GONNA get our coach to sign a six year contract extension. I would say why are we giving Co two six year contracts in November? What if this season is is a disaster? We tied ourselves long-term to somebody who's got our program headed the wrong direction. Like who is this? It was a disaster continue. Yeah right it's November. He's not going anywhere right now. By the way we're two and four to start the season so let's just wait in March and see what we need to do. Because I can't find a single advantage from our school's perspective of handing out this contract extension. Now I can seem an advantage for Danny signing it now but how do we benefit from giving a contract extension to a basketball coach in November where? There's literally nowhere for him to go right. Now what are we doing like? I don't understand why that's allow it..
Fighting fear with beer: Virus spurs curbside beer sales
"And if you can't get to the bar in some places the bar will come to you white street brewery and Wake Forest North Carolina is offering curbside service for people who bring an growler bottles to be filled with their signature tap beers Austin beer works in Texas stacked up colored cans and bottles for a makeshift drive through and in Alabama the state's ABC commission has issued an emergency rule allowing curbside sales of unopened alcohol at restaurants
UNC's Lost Season
"Jeff Bordello. I'm a little shook. North Carolina finished the regular season. They lose to do because that's fine we're used to that but they're the lowest seed in the ACC tournament North Carolina. So some how you would view this season for the tar heels. I mean they're arguably the most disappointing team in the country. Jeff Portillo is a college basketball insider for ESPN. And I know we have to take some other factors into account with injuries. And Karl Anthony and things like that but you know this was a preseason top ten team that like you said is going to be the bottom seed in the ACC tournament in the ACC is not goodness here. It's a it's a pretty down league you know. There are Miami. Nbc in Wake Forest Pittsburgh. None of those teams are very good and Carolina is at the bottom of all that and to me. That's shocking you know. This is one of the best of all time blueblood like I said a top ten preseason team and four months later five later. They're the worst team in the ACC. It's one of the bigger stories in college football this season and I think you could really make the case that there are the biggest disappointment in college hoops so let's go back to October. Preseason rankings come out North Carolina's in the top ten. They're sitting at number nine refresh everybody in what the real expectations were coming into this season for this team. I mean they a lot of guys from last year but they did bring in what people expected was an impact recruiting class was led by Karl Anthony Centerpiece of Roy Williams retooling effort. It's chole Anthony. Going the top freshman in the country making his debut tonight from of a raucous crowd here that the dome he was expected by pretty much everyone to be the most productive freshman in the country. That's how he wasn't high school that's where he was on the scene. He was a guy that was going to put up big points. He was gonNA put a big assist numbers. He's going to rebound and he was going to win games. That's just that's just what he was at the high school level and people expected him to to be that same player Carolina and it. Kinda set up perfectly for him because he was able to come in and this was a team that didn't have any real goto guys coming back. So they said hey collapsed. And you're getting the ball from day one and you're gonNA lead us and you know it kind of looked good. You know in the first game of the season. He was terrific. He had thirty four points. Eleven rebounds five assists debut for coal. Anthony lost a lot of stars to the NBA. After last season with the go one superstore Chambal. Whom the feeling was that? You know this team is going to be okay. Even despite the losses and along with him they brought into Grad transfer. Is that you know. We're probably two of the five or seven best. Grad transfer is in the country was Christian Keeling from Charleston southern just NPR's from William and Mary and and that added some experience at its veteran leadership and combined with a couple of other guys are Mondo Baker was a five star recruit garrison brooks was a two year starter download so i. I just think that people thought you combine the newcomers with the guys returning and even though there weren't any stars coming back from last year's team there was enough here to to compete for an ACC title and Roy Williams has done this before where his team is is written off a little bit in the preseason and under rank behind teams like Duke and he finds a way to win and that's just what he does and and I think people expected him to do it again with the guys coming in and coming back well so now you've got a team that has preseason expectations they get into. The season was the first time this season there was the first real sign of concern that the season might not go the way some had hoped. I think it was a couple of things I think one was even when they were winning the game. They won their first five games of the season. But even some of those the Notre Dame win the Alabama win. There were some signs of. Is this team going to be as good as we thought were Williams? I you get the sense. He hasn't loved all aspects of his teams. Play here today. You know he has. He has not name barely beat. Notre Dame eleven point margin was it. It wasn't addictive. How close the season opener was against Notre Dame so I think there was. Okay let's give it time. Let's let Cole Anthony. And the other freshman get acclimated and this team will figure it out but they lose by twenty five at home 'til Ohio state to start December. You know then they lose that. Virginia you know losing effort gene is not not a usually a big concern. This is not a vintage Virginia team and I think most people realize that at that time and then they lose to Wofford. They ended up finishing below five hundred in the southern conference. Terriers come to Chapel Hill and knock off a top twenty five North Carolina squad. And that's when the you know the eyebrow start raising what's going on with his team are they poised to be this massive disappointment and obviously once call. Anthony gets hurt. The wheels fall off from their breaking news. Call Anthony out four to six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus. Well at that point you know maybe things are a little bit concerning. But they're going to get two. Acc conference play. You said it the ACC not the best conference in the world so they get to the ACC schedule. How's that go form? You look at their schedule and you said okay they can. They can weather the storm three straight home games in. Acc play against Georgia Tech Pit Clemson and they had games against Pittsburgh Virginia Tech Miami even a bad UNC team or even a a mediocre UNC. Team could go six in Owen. Those games it was kind of the the bottom half of the league and they went one and five losing the first five games of that stretch. Seventy nine seventy seven double-overtime Virginia tech knocking off North Carolina. I think that was almost getting the end. When you look back the schedule what would be the one moment that sort of pushed everything over to the point in return honestly I think it was after Columbia comes back a long ways away. Eleven Games without call Anthony but he will play tonight. Yeah the five hundred. Unc team suddenly. Jay has a lot of juice and he'd be Miami. Nc State then call and he comes back for a home game in Boston College and you know. They weren't very good at the time but they tended ten three and six in the ACC and you know the the narrative was kind of okay. If Cole Anthony Comes back the committee will look at them and say you know with call. Anthony this is an NCAA tournament team. He's going to be on the roster in the NCAA tournament they're going to factor that in so I think people started wondering can. Unc string together. Some wins and make a late run and in his first game back. You lose at home to Boston. College straight three other time. He's spoiled return. I think that was the sign that it's not going to happen so that's not. Obviously the only epic moment we all continue to think about from the season tickets back to the first game between North Carolina and Duke. The Duke Game was a game that that could have turned things around at least changed the narrative about Carolina and to lose in that fashion. Another late blown lead. Losing to your biggest rival do comes back not to be Carolina to me. That was that was a really low mon it just because it it could have been really a season changing moment for Carolina and the way it happened it just it kind of sent them even further down into the season
Is Duke Done? A Season of NCAA Basketball Surprises
"Myron. I think the last time we spoke. I was at Cameron Indoor Stadium asking You what you thought about Zion Williamson. That was the last time and now Zion's gone and things haven't been as good for college basketball since he left. Myron Medcalf is a senior college basketball reporter for ESPN. Men's college basketball has been having a pretty weird season. Can you explain to us sort of the state of things and why some of the usually omnipresent contenders your dukes your? Unc's Kentucky aren't even in the top five while it's a meeting in a year like this anybody who tells you that they know exactly what's going to happen in March. They're lying because there was no one no expert. That understands kind of what's happened so far. It's just been a wild year but I think you can look at some of the things that transpired Really at the start of the season. I think the James Wiseman suspension by the answer. Aa For twelve games after being ruled ineligible. You have a Memphis team that I think had a chance to be much better if he sticks around. Lamelo ball who if he follows the traditional track and goes to a UCLA USC that changes the spotlight on those programs as well But instead you have a lot of the blue blood teams that don't have the lottery level talent that they had a year ago. Duke is still a top ten level team but they don't have anyone close To a Zaylon you'd have a team like Gonzaga that had to lottery picks last year. They got some good players. Nothing like that so the the powerhouse teams are just really good team which has closed the gap so now a San Diego State with the Malachi Flint and against double team Malachi for three huge three by malachite lend. That's a really good team. Competing for number one see the Dayton with an ob top suddenly was one of the best teams in America. And I think it's because you just don't have the same concentration of talent we're accustomed to seeing with your Kentucky's in Dukes. Then you'RE K. Use Marin what is it like covering a season like this where there are really clear favorites and no one seems to have any idea. What's going on this year? You just don't really know who to chase like. You don't know who to say okay. That's the team to watch. Because they're really good. It just feels like a pretty fragile college basketball scene which is great for the tournament for everything. We didn't have in college basketball this year in terms of no established kind of powerhouse team. I think we're going to see the benefits of it. Come into double A. Tournament. Time when we could have one of the craziest craziest. March madness is we've ever had so. Let's talk about Duke. Quit even when dukes not great? We're still going to talk about Dick. Because it's really interesting. Myron how much struggled on Saturday they lost to Virginia Virginia wins. That look the three point line. Just couldn't connect before that game. They were ranked seventh. But I imagine they could go down even further now right. Yeah I mean this is a team that I think will will fall in the rankings. Duke has run into some teams who put on their Superman capes in the last couple of games. And that's change things you have. Nc State which made sixty one percent of its threes and that loss A week ago wake forest mixed fifty four percent of its threes. These things those teams had done before they phase Duke and Virginia really as just a team on the rise So I think duke got caught in kind of a weird gauntlet there but trae Jones has been sort of their closer whereas a year ago you could go to RJ bear. You could go to Cam Reddish you could go on. And now they're a bit more one dimensional They're much closer to what you see. Maybe in a typical season where they're right there with Louisville and Florida state and Virginia and the other teams at the top of the ACC. But they don't have a guy who's GonNa carry them to the top of the League and just help them separate. That's just not enough talent in college basketball for really any team to do that. But especially in the league like the Agency. So you're in Kansas right now in Kansas. The number one team. You were there to watch them. Play Kansas State and it was a right because these two teams Fighting literally fighting back in January Shit and now the benches inc just unnecessary. That's not good. This is Paul. This is bad this is but on Saturday night myron. They shook hands before the tip off in. Kansas came away with the victory. What did you make of the number team in their performance? Well I I'm just glad nobody fought again because that that would have been bad Glad to have that moment before the game I will say. I've never been to a regular basketball game outside of the NCAA tournament that had as much security as that game. Had I mean they were everywhere about? I'm glad there was an incident. I I think Kansas is sort of the perfect team in a year like this. Do they have a lottery pick? No but they've got this really balanced group of guys who are pretty good offensively. They've been pretty efficient team and they got two guys who win they're together. They're hard to stop. It's Dotson In Gaza Buki who when they're on the floor together. Kansas made about sixty percent of his shots inside the art. Their opponents have made about forty one percent of their shots inside the three point line. That's the story right there when those two guys are together. Kansas is certainly the best team in America. But you also look at them and go. Are they one bad night from Abu? Koa from struggling. He was hurt part of the game on Saturday against the bad Kansas state team boss feeds it in bounced past as a group. Six to shoot you back down spits travels this is the shot ultimately but he rolled his ankle. Oh this is good has approved. He is clutching his right foot so Kansas is good. But like a lot of teams there. One bad moment badge stretch away from being right there with everybody else. Well now. It seems like Kansas is going to run away with the big twelve after Baylor who was ranked number two going into the weekend got upset by. Tcu How bad was this for Baylor? It's always interesting right. Like Baylor won every game but one for like two months straight and now all of a sudden last week I think a lot of people are panicking and that happens to a team. Like Baylor which doesn't have the brand recognition of Duke or Kentucky or a Kansas. So in hard times. I think we may be overemphasized Some of their struggles. I think you obviously don't want to continue losing and losing to a team like Tcu is not good For them but this is a team that again played a tissue team that did things that they haven't done in the past made forty five percent of the threes on Saturday against Baylor. They made thirty three percent of their shots from three point. Line before that so that can be more of an anomaly. I think Baylor overall though is one of the best defensive teams in America made the best defensive team not named Kansas. So that's GONNA keep them in every game that they play well one team. That's right up there with Kansas and Baylor is Gonzaga perennial contenders They did lose to. Byu about a week ago but they're still considered favorites to win the WCTC. How good is this Gonzaga team? I think they're really really good me now like I think they're amazing. I just think this is a year where because everyone has been sort of even you get one loss and all of a sudden. Gonzaga gets the whole. You haven't played anybody. And why are you losing you know in the West Coast Conference and I think that's unfair? Byu was a really good team like Byu's go into selection Sunday with maybe a five or six seed. Maybe even better so. There's nothing wrong with losing a road game in that environment to a good team. They have the number one offense in America a flea Petra. Sav is one of the best young players Indian tire country. We would know what mark few the head coach can do. And they've got two losses all year. I think that is one of the best teams in America and I think will prove it wants double a. Tournament starts so most of the rankings have some combination of Kansas Baylor in Gonzaga in the top. Three we'll see how this weekend changes that but after that myron gets pretty interesting. I'm you've got Dayton San Diego state. Did you see that coming up before the season began out like I wish I could lie and say I did? I wish I could be that dude. It was like yeah. I called San Diego State back in October in Dayton. But I didn't I mean like ob top and a Dayton is suddenly this lottery pig. And I don't think anybody saw that Common Dayton on Friday against Davidson Mia. Think about this number. They may ninety six percent of their shots inside the three point. Line Ninety six percent like I don't care if you're playing a high school junior Varsity Team. That's really difficult to do in Dayton. Did that and not only did they do it. They've been doing it Throughout the season just really inefficient offensive team in San Diego State. A team that lost its first game about a week and a half ago. The they've been role as well in their line of people who will say San Diego State doesn't play the competition that the other top teams have faced in college basketball. That's not true. They beat the. Byu Team that just beacons Aga- they beat Creighton. Which I think is the surprise of college basketball naked win at all by thirty one points and they beat Iowa another solid team another Aa tournament team by ten points so the best teams that were thrown at San Diego State. They won those games now. They did lose the UNLV Week ago but beyond that there have been a really really good team and I think in a year like this again. You're not going to run into a team with two lottery. Picks it feels like they can make Iran as well both San Diego state ending

"Like new virus cases in China have again declined up just three hundred ninety four in the last twenty four hours with another one hundred fourteen people reporting reported to have died from this illness there's been twenty one hundred deaths now in China out of about seventy five thousand cases now the overall spread of the virus appears to be slowing but we are told that the situation remains severe and who bay province and its capital Han where this virus was first detected so we're going to go to Wuhan because a doctor is ang sweetie is a professor emeritus of Wake Forest University medical school in North Carolina he's been in this country for about forty five of his sixty three years at went back home to visit his wife's parents for the judge denied lunar new year celebrations and got stuck there when the lockdown occurred so we want to find out from me he is a doctor and his
Julissa Prado: The Million-Dollar Curl Whisperer
"Talk often about about how hair is very personal but Harris also deeply political a hundred percent. How does that show up for you? God it's so I think. Part of the reason why y results curls even did well was because you know we launched in twenty seventeen that was like in the midst of like politically it. The political climate at the time was very anti Latino very anti immigrant and it just like I feel like we were hearing all these things things negative stereotypes perpetuated in the media about our culture. We were like kind of being put down and we felt very. I feel like our community felt very attacked. Walked and I think that because of that it made us want to where our culture on her sleeve and make sure that wherever we went. People knew. I'm not like you like I'm proud of my culture and if you say something racist best believe I'm going I'm not going to sit here and take it like I'm GonNa say something like you know. Screw assimilating screw. Whatever whatever us being so nice in the past Knob we're GONNA if you're not going going to help our community that's fine? We're going to help ourselves. We don't need you. We don't need any body other than ourselves like our community powerful. We are strong. We are intelligent. And we're we'RE GONNA WE'RE GONNA help each other out and I think that with resuls curls it was like so many of these women that's why they were readying to wear their hair natural because it was like they wanted to rid themselves solves of these things that had they had they had internalized that told them that their culture their their neo natural state was not good. So you have this woman in mind. How did you then go out and find her? She found me she was always finding me. It's it's funny because I feel like I just was myself and I was just I was I was her you know but how did she know about your social media. Happy Whenever people ask me like that question exactly like what was the best marketing tactic. It wasn't really a tactic but the best marketing tool that Latinos have is chief most I culture cheese culture. I you know rebranded in the sense of calling sharing is caring you know it sharing his carrying like we have this culture of like when you see something good. You don't just keep it to yourself. You want to tell everybody we need something bad. You WanNa tell everybody know so. That really helped my business out because we like opened up. You know the the social media page. I just put it on there and for example what. A lot of people don't realize about Puerto Rico when the hurricane hit was that it forced an entire island of women to go. Oh natural women that just like the Latinos here in the U on on. Not In the in the Caribbean that had been you know. Oh straightening their hair. And we're not comfortable with them with their hair. Natural for so much of the island didn't have power for so long so they had to be deal they had there are natural and it was like. It's different when you're forced to be this way than when you choose it so we were like the only platform or the only Lepage online that was talking to people in Spanish even opening voice notes and doing all of these different like I felt like I was talking to my Diaz. That's how they would communicate with me. They would send me like voice notes on facebook messenger or like random things like that and it was like somebody found out about us and then more they told more people and wake up every day to hundreds and hundreds of messages on facebook especially from Puerto Rican women who were just didn't know what to do with their hair. They were like because they didn't have electricity so they could use blow dryers. St Mary's they couldn't Muslim didn't have gas to like what you know. What I mean like like we're waking up two hundred hundreds of messages from these women that were just like didn't know what to do with their hair and they're sending me? These pictures here was so damaged too because they had been straining for so long so I had to revert back to who my learnings from when I was making my own products at home. It's calling us. They were like contacting us in so many different ways and all of them. We were helping them through this process says and I think during that time we went from like I don't know a hundred you know followers on facebook to fifty thousand. It was insane insane of just like that month and as soon as shipping carrier started shipping to them again we had like thousands of pending orders for Puerto Rico. It's wild yeah you have a masters in business from wake forest. How much of what you've done in the last two years is informed by what you learned getting your Mba Okay and how much is instinct and just like life lessons? It's interesting because I feel like everything that I've ever done in my life has prepared me for this moment from driving a truck for my commercial driver's license to the lessons that I learned growing up in the hood. I yeah definitely attribute my my entrepreneurial spirit from growing up in mid city in in these like underprivileged areas areas that are black and brown communities because I feel like true creativity. True Hustle is when you don't have a lot to and you have to create your your own opportunities so going in these areas like I saw growth and what I meant by growth was like I saw the lady next door that I talked about. Start off with like making one caboose to having a whole cart to having a whole little shop to doing this like that's like hustle would see her there rain or shine like mountain. No matter how long the lines were giving great service and everyone would come. Everybody knew about her. So I feel like I saw these people creating opportunities that didn't exist for themselves and getting creative and just put so much heart into it so I think that for me growing up not having a lot taught me how to appreciate things and how to get a lot of bang for my buck to creativity. I feel like doesn't come from having thousands of dollars and and not caring about costs and having a not profitable business I think to creativity comes from having twenty dollars on the first day of school to look really fly. Hi and figuring go to dollar tree going to this making my own shoelaces tie them up it differently. Whatever sewing some stuff up and showing up to school like trendsetting you know and that was how I grew up like guide and have a lot of money but best believe I looked fly? You know. So that's how I feel about. My business is now to like the for example is like our little target a photo. Shoot thing you know. I'm going to create something really cute. I'm going to have cute photos. They're GONNA it'd be adorable. They're going to be funny but they're sure not gonNA cost me my profits. I'm not compromising profits for brand awareness. You posted a video on instagram. After received the first photo of a customer seeing the product on shelves at target. And there's up saying the video. which was I'm not supposed to be here? Dr Who. Oh yeah so that makes me really emotional. Because it's true. I feel like imposter syndrome. What it is but I feel like it's is different when you grow up in communities? Where like that doesn't never happens? You know like when you don't see like the when you think of entrepreneurs I feel like a lot of times like that word is never gets attributed to Latinos ever gets attributed like somebody who comes from immigrant parents it it gets attributed to you know someone that looks like trump someone who comes from like this lineage of having a lot of power in access and privilege the village so I feel for me and you know my customer. My family being on the shelf isn't just like a product being on the shelf. It's a testament to like all of my. My family and my community is hard work and determination and for me. It's like I think about seeing the product on the shelf I think about I think about like all the work that went into it from my dad wanting to come to this country like doc having been going through infested sewer to working some chops to working so many jobs to to you know sacrificing so much so that I could have everything so that could have access to better schools so that I could have education so that I could be more than he had like. My mom never went to school at all like she barely learned how to read it right when she she was like already an adult. So I think for me I say that just means like people that grow up like that you just think like like that couldn't be meet. That's where it comes.

The the daughter scoring too low the first time because then if she came up too much the second time it my look a little suspicious. So these guys were complicit as fuck and the the scheme was masterminded by William Rick singer, whose company known as the edge, college and career network also known as the key which was a for profit, college, counseling and prep business and singer would collect anywhere from fifteen thousand to seventy five thousand for manipulating the test scores and up to a quarter million dollars to greasy admission wheels on the basis of a student's not existent athletic aspirations. Oh, yeah. He was good at what he did. Do you think that guy called himself the key? When he's banging, absolutely. You're gonna need. I'm an unlock your door. Yeah. He was unlocking. He's the only high school guidance counselor with like Bentley couple Bentley's. Yeah. Absolutely. No, he wasn't a guidance counselor. He was a full on. He was a guy named William who went by the name coach coach, look, here's the way the scheme work guys the scheme for the test scores was simple enough. But the acceptance via university athletic department is a little bit more complicated. But at the same time pretty simple step one, you identify college sport at a high level university that no one cares about like what like what I'm talking about programs. So boring that there's a chance that the dean might not even remember that the program is there, I'm talking like Stanford sailing, I'm talking about university of Texas. Men's tennis burn talking about Yale women's soccer. I'm talking about USC rowing jogger nuts. Absolute juggernaut program their respective juggernauts in the industry. Here's what you do. Then you call the coach already depressed because they coach volleyball at Wake Forest offer them abroad, which you know, they're gonna take because they're so depressed. Then the student Photoshop themselves pretending to play that sport. And then submits that photo as part of their application and the liar students locations moved to the top of the pile because they're a potential recruit. Yeah. With you on everything there, except the coach is definitely not the press. He's getting a sack of cash a nine and a half joining the team. Have you seen a Livia Jade, well, here's the thing. They don't actually joined the team they they could get a pile of money. And then then a hot person joining the team. It's it's a great situation for these thirty coat. Find me a happy men's tennis coach in collegiate sports. You can't because they all want to be doing something else a guaranteed. Find me one. Are they even allowed to coach during the match passionate? I don't even know can you coach tennis coach during the actual ball harder. It's fucking dumb. So look the sad coach gets a glimmer of hope in the form of money. Sorry, will and the overbearing parent feel slightly guilty for the psychological consequences of them being on their fourth marriage. It simply get it. Right. Sure. The fuck this shit. Now, I'm gonna leave you with this before we take your calls. You know, what I think is a bigger scandal than this. Illegals getting to pay in state tuition. I think that's a bigger scandal. Bumping other American citizens who might want to go to that school. And he can't they can't afford it. You know, what I think is a bitter bigger scandal than this. Affirmative action. The neighborhood spotlights moment of the show where we get to celebrate or explore a nuke and cranny of the triangle and Angie introduces us to new neighborhoods all the time throughout the area that maybe we've never driven through. Maybe we've never explored before. And we get the chance to learn a little bit about a particular area of our community, so Angie, where are you taking us this week? Yeah. So I thought I would focus on where our feature listing of the week is located over in Vernon place. So this neighborhood is north north Wake Forest. Okay. So up off of a bold run hill road. So very north of Wake Forest and Vernon place is a neighborhood built by Smith. Douglas builders. They have homes ranging from two thousand square feet up to about four thousand square feet. All single family homes. They bring the price point I would say around three hundred thousand up to the highest price point one. I believe was four thirty and then all of the homes. Our brand new construction. So they started construction in two thousand seventeen they are right on the very end of construction actually the listing that I have active and on the market at two three three Delfi way in Wake Forest on. That is the last home that is being built in that neighborhood that is actually a spec. Home says ready to move in. But in burning plays, the one thing that I love about the neighborhood is how spaced out all of the homes are all of the home sit on a, you know, an acre plus lots so great size. You know homes along with a lot of just yards space. You know, a lot of great trees throughout the neighborhood as well. It is very mature. Even though it's still a brand new neighborhood. So yeah, the lot sizes are wonderful in Burnham place, very cool area to live in up there. I mean, if you are a nature lover, you're just so close to false lake and just lots of good likes around there. And all agree on one thing here when it comes to football in the state of North Carolina. Wake Forest flies, well below the radar. You have to understand they have the smallest stadium. I believe in division. One certainly power five they had a small stadium. They have to have one of the smallest student bodies. It's tiny relatively speaking. It's also a basketball school in a basketball crazy state and has to compete in the ACC. Against perennial powers. Like, Florida state. Clemson and Virginia Tech football has always been an uphill battle at wake. One story about a recruit coming to Wake Forest sums up the entire Wake Forest football experience. The host was certain that they're recruit would be underwhelmed by Wake Forest. Problem solved. He took the recruit to duke's campus. Instead, here's Joe obi's telling an old story that illustrates Wake Forest place in the pecking order of North Carolina football you'll hear Joe Gilio in there to be had Walker. The head coach Wake Forest gets George to pay a visit. This is one Wake Forest was in the actual city of Wake Forest, which was a small church campus that had a small stadium. Just like it still has a small stadium now. So Walker picks up Bill George at the airport, and then take some straight to duke's campus now nine hundred forty eight wall swayed stadium is a palace fresh off a hosting the Rose Bowl, right? What was wait is a palace in nineteen forty eight. Okay. And you've got the architecture gothic architecture of Duke on the trinity campus. I mean, it's really impressive. So Walker takes them on a tour. And he says this is where you're going to be playing. So Georgia's like dang, all right and George goes on to be an NFL hall of Famer, right? And he plays at Wake Forest he signs, right? There is like sweet. And then he goes to wake force the actual campus after he'd signed, and he starts taking classes, and he's like where the hell am. I what is this? Isn't that? Isn't that the campus? He took me to except for the day that he actually went and played Duke in football. And he's like, wait a minute. This is where I was. And apparently the way, you know, it's all it's all hearsay at this point. But the way the story goes that he goes to behead walkers. I came in. He said this is where I'd be playing and walkers response was full a lot of work at a play here. And here you are you're playing in the stadium right now. And that was that. But it it'll straits where Wake Forest has always been in the pecking order for the big four. Not the greatest program, but still there's money here. Big time college football money and enough lawyers in the area who care enough to write some checks and keep the football program alive in two thousand six the demon deacons actually won their conference for just the second time in history and response the administration gave head coach Jim grove a raise taking a salary to just over two million dollars a year..

"How many power five teams can can you name that have not scored fifty points on little I looked this up today. It's believe too. It's three three. Okay. Lord state Florida state scored twenty eight still one Virginia scored twenty seven portable only scored three. And Boston College scored thirty eight Clemson Wake Forest. Georgia Tech, Alabama have all exceeded fifty most most fairly comfortably Alabama somehow. Syracuse isn't known for scoring tons of points. Now. And luckily, it's not a short week after you just got processed by Clemson. Luckily, damn turkeys put fifty one NC state two weeks ago in these states way better than you love. Oh, boy, I'll tell you play them after this game. You might it's worse. You might have you might have one game where you give up. I don't know seventy seven right to Clemson go. I don't know. Man. May maybe Clemson just you know, maybe Clemson just had us real in. Right. Like punch led to another and a much stronger person. Put me on my back. Yeah. Sure. That them. That's how that fight went. Georgia Tech put up sixty six on him. So as bad as Louisville is this is awesome right here. They finished with four top fourteen teams Clinton Kentucky. Syracuse Kentucky's doing its best to make sure it won't be top fourteen. Yeah. Let's let's say let's say top twenty five. Oh my God. They're having the December January of household. Budgeting moments. Christmas Byrom unexpected tax Bill Barham. Alabama. And it got worse. It'd be real shame. If this pipe bursts pipers three thousand dollars. Oh, look kids gotten fight. One of them broke a tooth, eight hundred bucks..

"That's a different story, but Winton obvious blood, like what this might happen with Alabama and Arkansas and Ohio State and against any Anna and Vanderbilt and Georgia. It just fun to watch. Yeah, you're right. I mean, I'll look these scored again. I'll look this court again. I'll look these court. I know what I will say though. It's not. It's not fun to watch until it is. And I mean it's not fun until Alabama's in trouble in the fourth quarter there. Actually, this is actually a football game where they made mistakes upset. That'd be awesome. That's great. That's what I'm saying. It's not interesting until it's super interesting, but you kind of go into game figuring what's gonna happen, nine times out of ten. That's usually what happens. Yeah, absolutely. So let's take a look Ella bama's playing Arkansas. Obviously Alabama's a huge favourite. And then we will get Georgia against Vanderbilt, obviously, Georgia's a huge favourite Ohio State Indiana or house to huge favorite Clemson against Wake Forest. Clemson is a nineteen point favorite. That is a big favorite. Of course. Not as high as some of these others than LSU in Florida. I'm going to take out the LSU in Florida game for a second because they're both ranked, but do you see any one of those top four teams that I mentioned against any in any of these matchups struggling or possibly losing. Alabama, arkansas. Ohio State Indiana, Georgia, Vanderbilt the of those three or sing and Clemson Wake Forest. Excuse me. You also ship a west Virginian Kansas in there. Yeah, but I'm just asking you those for because of the top four. Do you see any one of these having being a problem for one of the favorites? Not really, maybe Wake Forest against Clinton, but that's a big. Maybe also. Yeah, yeah, maybe as any other weak forces at home. So you know, I could see happening. I don't that that kind of one of the main reasons I picked force and they have probably the better record than any other team. Yeah, yeah. So three into. I would say you're probably right, but just for the sake of argument, all say that Ohio State has a little bit of trouble Indiana. We'll see. We'll see what happens. Yeah. Okay. So how we talk about an interesting game LSU number five against Florida. Number twenty. Two, it's at Florida and should be a tough game l. issues actually a slight favorite two and a half. So it's one of those tossup type games. Your favorite. Well, first, we'll talk about other games close tomorrow. But right now this this game talking about. With LSU being the favourite, it's still close to call their on the road. Who do you got you? I take for to think they'll get the set. I, I'm still like LSU still the better team, my mind. So I'm going to stick with illness better team. Florida's not the same as it used to be. Yeah, Florida's been on kind of a downhill slump. Sure. Bring back Tibo who knows did he did he graduate? Yeah, I believe so. Because he was like the most successful college quarterback, let as many graduated have to be that title you have to have like multiple years. So you know? Yeah. Okay. But for I like their defense, strong defense only allowing one hundred forty passing yards through the air. They only allow fourteen points game. I mean, both teams are similar. Of course, both teams have great athletes, but give me for it at home. They're not a bad team at all. So I would go ahead and take them. All right. I'll take LSU though, just to save pick. And I think they're just a better team. I mean, they're ranked way up there. They have a chance get in college football, playoff, Florida..

"Kinda came out of nowhere basically to be a dual threat guy last year that you know had twenty nine touchdown passes and ten rushing touchdowns running for about seven hundred yards didn't really expect that maybe KENDALL hit could've continued that we won't know until he comes back from his suspension. Now, the flip side of this coin is Wake Forest played Georgia Tech last year. So they've also had all summer to prepare for the option, which really takes away an important element of two lanes advantages in the lead up to a game where they've got that option offense and the opposing defence either has to learn it very quickly, or you know, has to come back with a short turn around and get cut, blocked all game and all that kind of thing. So that is one thing that is a little bit of a detriment for Wake Forest here. My number seven and a half. I won't play this at six and a half because I need more of an overlay early on in the season just crossing through seven barely. But this is another interesting game where if you're Wake Forest, you kinda wanna hold on until you get kind of hitting back. If you're to lay. And this can be tone center for you. So you got two teams with, you know, as you looted through, they're kind of different motivations here. Yeah, I agree with that. I think that wake forces is trying to buy their time. Well, I two lane this is this is their spot. So I think if you if you arguing who has the better spot here, I would have to say to lane. Like I said, I do think two lanes defense is gonna struggle throughout the course of the season. So maybe Wake Forest has a quarterback that does a good enough job or maybe they're just good enough on the offense at wine. They can just run the ball on few lane. Certainly wouldn't surprise me at say, even though I think that to lane, we'll try to slow the game down. I don't like the under very much here. I think that Wake Forest can try to play as fast as they can with a new quarterback. Maybe not quite as fast as they will later in the year. But Wake Forest was really, really, really fast at the end of last year. I think they were top ten and tempo by the end of the season, I think they'll try to play quickly or as well. So I think fifty six is is a little too low to take the younger here. Yeah. I mean, it's again game that doesn't look all that compelling on paper, but you'll get a lot of different angles that you wanna consider here as throughout this week. And by the way, as we're talking here, this Purdue numbers shooting up to three at bookmaker two and a half extra juice market wide. So looks like Purdue. Maybe the side here for somebody that's looking to get in early or they're just massaging the market to add a little bit more value to north western. So we'll have to see where money continues to come in on that one. All right..

"Three bend says which of these or rather can any of these usually bad. But recently, scrappy programs make a conference title game anytime soon. Purdue Wake Forest cow and I o estate are Benz nominees. Yeah. Great question. Ben attempted to answer with my heart, which would be cow, you know, as someone who grew up at Berkeley and got introduced to college football memorial stadium, but I just think they're division is tough year and year out even though think Justin Wilcox then the nice job and we'll do a nice job and elevating that program Wake Forest just too tough in the ACC Atlantic Division, even though Dave clawson's a nice job. So I'm going to kind of a tween Purdue. And I as state to programs that have coaches that really excite me, but coaches that may not be there that long give you told me that Jeff Brom is going to be at Purdue for ten years and that Campbell was going to be at Iowa State for ten years one or the other. That would be my pick. I probably go with Iowa State just because you saw last year they took down the two teams that were in the big twelve championship game in Oklahoma and TCU so. And that's just in that second year. So if you somehow there for three more years, it wouldn't shock me to see Iowa State make that jump and get into the big twelve. Title game, although do is in winnable division, big ten west of isn't. So I guess I go, I always stay right now, but it's between those two for me. Keep those questions coming as Ivan mentioned at the top of the show, practices are underway and essentially sewer we. So we had the show today. We'll have another one coming at you next week and the week after that before we start our regular season schedule five days a week starting the week of August twenty seventh. So the players are geared up. The coaches are geared up. Obviously the walk on are geared up and so are we will become an daily before you know. That's right. We're pumped up. It's it's here. I mean, we've been waiting for it. It's here. Here we go. Thanks a lot for downloading today. Thank you..
