"That's in the little cemetery schneider cemetery. That's a this was my favorite from north park This has taken on blue miss road. He loves that place. I love that place. That's my go to place. What if you look at the two sides on each side that's missed and in the middle. It's not a bug and we try to really really the bunket as a bog but it isn't white thing in the middle. That's what i'm talking about. We don't know what it was. It smart man. It was a bug. If it was a bug you can actually see its wings flapping so right. Before i saw this. I kept getting sprites. And unlike sprites. I was thinking of drink sprite. As in the elemental fairy sprite right. So there's one thing about sprites they can be very you know they can make flowers bloom and all kinds of things but they can also be dangerous if so sometimes they do you know their stories about them. Doing thanks people to yup. That's my favorite pitcher because it looks like a cross really in that picture. Ladies and gentlemen or watson wasn't it that is a scratch mark from spirit. That's because she deliberately went into the barn prospect and was calling out to ghost. I thought i don't do that. Smart demoting was it's not demonic. it was a ghost. There was a ghost in see egged it on and she called it out and he's not a friendly spirit and that's what he did to her back. That is what happens when you call out the spirit when you want to get the be ignorant with the spirit. That's what happens to. And i've seen ones know what the heck is the made. Averse cyber demon says the mehta verse. What is what is he talking about. What are you talking about. Cyber demon batty is a negative okay. It was two o'clock and one of my group members who was taking a camera and the coke in his hand. It's a in retirement. Call them the preacher man. It's herb at the bottom of the picture as well. That's a green orb and that is the area where she buried her pets Now what happened was when a girl walked by that area. She felt something there so she walked ten. More feet ahead turned around. Put her camera on a tripod and put a thirty second. Delay snap on it and when it snapshot when was petuous taken. That's what came up. We call him the preacher man so the people who who don't have the video what is your at. What area This right here. Yeah video just listening on. The radio occur. That is down in elizabeth. And then i was at one point that he and the person next to me had a photo of dog that look just like her on their locker and then i turned around and the nameplate behind me was also my uncle named craig you know. Sometimes there's there's things like that kind of directly Connects even even other ancestors and things like that or at least silverman who was the medium that the general my uncle. I don't think it's i don't i share my. I don't know i never. I never noticed her by no. It's not caesar. Because davis is she scared of her own shadow though in. Caesar wasn't afraid of anybody she he wasn't afraid of anybody. See i had caesar. When he was we had pop mark. Our dog had puppies and he was one of them or about another aspects of him or her. She's such a doctor Is she's just a sweet who she is to other people. She's ferocious but to me. She's a sweetheart But i don't know. I don't know if she has any i think i might have known her. His is his ma. Everything was ingrained in the wood. I freaked out. I start screaming. My mom come here. come here. Caesar's on the bathroom door and it was so distinct looking. Kim qazi had arm. His eyes are like oriental. I know that sounds weird. He's german shepherd but they reminded me of oriental the slant to them and it was exactly like that on the door and we ever time company would come and they knew caesar would go in the bathroom that they that was the it was the everybody was coming to the house to see caesar's on he's on the phone. He's on the bathroom door. Everybody was like a tourist attraction. Because if you knew. Caesar and you know you saw him. Can you share some with the Listeners of what tyson said for the he communicated to you through the sake well like it was specifically. It was stuff about his about his physical ailments. That were i. Don't wanna i don't wanna give away the young. I want them to be curious but it's it was. It was too specific. It was very very specific information about his leg and then You know injuries that came. As a result of his initial injury. It was all stuff that was like years true believer now. Yes your pets live on. No we all live on interest agrees you know with his leg. Did you ever have any similar ailments. no i didn't I mean i. I mean i've certainly had issues with my legs from time to time it. It was nothing like that was like marino. As i've noticed with a lot of people you know i. I communicate with animals to on occasion and a lot of their owners have certain elements that the the animal will develop. And there's there's beliefs in different cultures that those animals onto your life to kind of heal you from that but they take on that energy themselves so much like a human healer. She knows a lot ways. Yeah he can't protect. Your energy. Says well i think animals. I mean everything that i studied in seen. It seems like animals. Themselves are very intuitive. Very psychic themselves and and very empathic. Animals are the best to communicate with almost. Because if you think about it animals are there you know. People talk to their animals. At least i do anyways to more than nobody else. Find my animals. They sit there and they see everything that goes on in your life. You know in your house forever. You take them more so than other humans sewn. They tend to not worry about. Its than yeah they you know they know you wanna soul level. I think you know. And they think they're more at consciously aware of you at a soul level than than humans. Are you know. I think they're able to perceive a lot that we have been taught to. You know kinda push side and so that that there. Yeah there's such pure sold nothing better than an animal brand it. What do you think of. This would happen to me now. I want. I want to know what you what you think Nell caesar was a very ferocious. "Netflix released its quarterly results. After markets closed yesterday revealing that it's staggering pandemic fuel rise is stalling. It's global subscriber. Australia is demanding tech giants pay for news. Google relented, Facebook didn’t

"A dispute between lawmakers and american tech giant's took a dramatic turn this week for months. The government has been debating a new media code that would force the likes of google and facebook to pay traditional news outlets win linking to their content. The code was approved on wednesday by australia's lower house of parliament and is expected to pass in the senate next week on the same day. Google announced a three year. Deal with news court. The rupert murdoch owned conglomerate that has a big presence in australia's broadcast market google's decision to pay up in line with the proposed legislation was seen as a move to placate lawmakers but facebook took a different approach. Australians waking up yesterday to see the news wouldn't have actually seen any news if they get their news from facebook because on that day facebook decided to block all news articles australia. Tom wainwright is our media. Editor facebook tried to ban just news websites. That was the intention but it eased some kind of machine learning method which didn't seem to go very well because as well as banning news sites they banned all kinds of other things charities the fire service health services a project for children with cancer and most of those were reasonably quickly corrected npr thames. The damage was done people outraged. Why exactly where people outraged well. People are outraged about fact that so many things have been blocked the whence pace to be blocked but people are saying that in the middle of a pandemic is obviously not a great time to be blocking legitimate news sites providing true information about things. You know what the state of current lockdown laws are or where to get your vaccine that kind of thing. Scott morrison the prime minister not surprisingly is capitalizing on this. The idea of shutting down the sort of sorts digest today as some sort of threat. We'll have a strategy is reactive at. He's keen to make this as much of an international question as he can and he's pointing out to other countries are considering these codes as well and and wrestling with the same dilemmas. So i think australia is hoping that other countries will take it side in this battle and so what did facebook say about. How did they explain itself. Facebook says the australia's position basically rests on a misunderstanding about the relationship between facebook and publishers. And they say the actually. When facebook publishes a link to an article is the publisher actually benefiting from that not facebook and so they think that they should be the ones who are required to pay publishers for linking to publish it stories in fact they say the australia last year they reckon that they generated more than five billion referrals to australia new sites which they say would be worth about four hundred million australian dollars and they say actually if publishes thing that somehow getting a deal from this they should just stop publishing their stories to facebook. They're not under any obligations. Have their stuff on that. But for its part. Google made a different decision. Well that's interesting google's done exactly the opposite you know the tech firms faced with this in some ways. Impossible demand know they were told to pay up or take their business elsewhere. Facebook decided it was probably less bad to shut down its news links than it was to set the precedence of coughing up. Google the opposite choice. And it's this week a deal with news coal. Which is rupert murdoch's news organization and smaller deals with of the news organizations the terms of which have been fully disclosed. But the gist seems to be that. They'll basically pay them lots of money and in return they'll be allowed to carry on listing their news articles. And what do you make of those different approaches to this threat of of the differing actions that google and facebook of taking on this i think really reflect the kinds of business that they're in for face but they say the news actually is quite a small part of what they do is less than four percent. They say of what you see on your news feed for google. I think search engine. That wasn't allowed to show links twenty news articles wouldn't be much of search engine and you can imagine people pretty quickly abandoning google and going to something else like say being which is owned by microsoft which has been a chilly diversities these australian reforms. So i think google just decided that it was too big a hit for it to take facebook decided to gamble and i think we'll see in the next few days whether this gamble pays

"I'm working and we would love to include your questions. Ask us anything you want. Give us a ring at three zero four nine three three work or drop us a line at working at slate dot com. And if you've enjoyed this episode. Don't forget to subscribe to working wherever you get your podcasts. Okay let's go back to the episode. Already we talk about collaboration a lot on this show. Obviously it's a key part of the creative process But it feels like there's something extra about collaborating with close family members as we've said so far says a you've been working with family members for most of your life With your sisters. And in recent years with lucy. And lucy the for you with with your mom. But also with your sister martha wainwright and brother rufus wainwright clearly music is a family business for the two of you. But that's how it seems to me from the outside says he. Is that how it seems to you too late. It's just what your family does. Well for me. I don't think i ever would have gotten into doing music if it wasn't for my sisters and doing it with them. I really like being part of a bigger thing than just myself. I did do a couple of solo records and toured a little bit by myself. And i really didn't like it very much I love singing in harmony. And i like hearing other voices in my own songs too but Loosing does both very well. I mean we're very different As collaborators very different. I mean white one way i think about lucy and is that have you ever seen that movie chariots of fire absolutely for though anyone who hasn't seen it. There's it's about. Two runners and one of them is like doing sit ups and all sorts of exercises every day and and the other one runs pair foot through the woods and Is just naturally gifted as a runner. And i kind of feel like i'm the one who's doing sit ups and push ups and stuff and lucy's bear footing. I don't know. I've never heard you say that but i definitely do think that i mean i don't i don't think either of us know any different really from how how to the line between work and family because you guys throw just started seeing together as kids too and so and then when i was a kid all the adults were doing that together now. The adults still are doing that together. And in a way we ended up probably spending more time together as adults in a family than almost any other family. I know because you're working. So yes it is about work but you know there's a lot of in-between the work too so there's a lot of time spent together and Like a kind of a common goal. I mean going on tour with your family is good. Because it's like a family vacation but you're hopefully getting paid and there's a joint plan you know and everybody's going towards the same plan so but it's hard to speak to it in a way because it's in a vacuum of or having always been that way. You know suzy. Lucy when you collaborate on a track how do you divide up the work. And how do you provide feedback on each other's contributions. I think between the two of us we sort of stay off each other's backs and let each other be who we are because it's hard both of us can be easily crushed by criticism and often. I don't know what lucy should do. And i think probably you know that works both ways. Every time i send something to lose the or she sends something to me. We sort of just figure out our own part. And i'm always delighted by what she sends back and once in a while they'll be like oh. Could you sing this note on that one part. Because that's what i hear in my head and and the problem there. Yeah mostly we agree. I think is also part of it. It's not like. I think. I mean i don't know what you really think in your head and maybe you hear things and then you're like oh well you don't say anything i think mostly we have a shared sensibility. But i also think on this record. We we crossed over more than we normally do like. There's one song where i wrote the music years. In years ago in the night didn't like the word so i scrapped all the words and i just gave that song to you and then you wrote the words for that and we've never done that before or for example on another song you wrote the song and then i sing the lead of the song which also we don't normally do. I'll switch that much around so there was a little bit more crossing over than we normally do. And you say yeah yeah. It was fun to do a song together. Right song together. But gary too because i didn't know if loose who was gonna like the lyrics that i wrote but i also would never have written those lyrics if i if i was writing a song of my own so it it's it's what i would call cross pollen. What is the christ painting yet i am. I did like the words to the song. I was so sick of my own attempts at trying to write lyrics to that song and so disgusted with myself. That i gave them to you. And then when you wrote the as like great. That's great and then i wanted to take every half of a song that i haven't give it to you to finish just to get it off my plate and the i know it's sometimes a relief to have someone else do something take it out of your hands. You know because you would never write the same thing if we were doing it all yourself. So the collaborating is is a great source of energy to because you have somebody else's energy coming in. Could you just tell me what the two songs were that. You were talking about Sure the song get. The better is a song that i wrote the music to and and the chorus of years and years ago and then mom wrote the all the rest of the words a broken way running through the damsel in distress stay. Thought she is the bed with me..

"Know, just never when when we come home for the offseason they go to school and and that's Thursday. We love school. I mean that's that's incredible time for Jenny and I to just this is the first time Jenny and I and fourteen years have not had a baby at home even my two-year-old son. He goes to walk to school too. So The season was was trying at times for sure. I mean, especially the week and the Pfister Hotel that that provided some that's the second thing that comes to mind is that week in the Pfister but faith in all a tremendous blessing to look back and know that we played we did what we had to do to play to to bring some enjoyment to our great fans and to ourselves, but also just that time of that three or four months. That was incredible for me and my family it really was it was time that we we may never get that time ever again. And so I'm trying to look at things like that. When you look back on on just being able to compete again, Mike shildt was with me last week and he said man we were we're close to getting shut down and then you you all of a sudden you get the chance to play. Did it feel like almost not little wage again, but it was it just fun to just be back out on the field again remind you of why you love the game so much. Absolutely. Yeah when we were what was it 17 days, we didn't play we were we were in that home until four seven of those we were not able to leave the house after that and I really do believe we were probably only one or two more Kovac cases from being shut down probably for good. I mean just to make it fair for everyone. When I look back at that, I realized how close we came to not be no play. I realized I remember the guys when we left a hotel they were so glad that they got to leave but but then the I heard several people I can remember distinctly Harrison Bader saying I cannot wait to play baseball. Yeah. It was it was such a good reminder Thursday. We are big league baseball players of all jobs in the world. We have, you know, obviously one of the greatest and so sometimes I think anybody when they're kind of pushed into that world for too long, they they lose track of what's special and what's great about what they do and getting getting it taken from you as I know personally firsthand from having injuries over the years getting it took him from you at times can be a real refresher on how great and how wonderful the game actually is. I was looking I did a a meeting yesterday with the Cardinals Hall of Fame and they asked me about my faith. Moments of the season and I said, well one of my favorites was watching Adam Wainwright pitches complete game on yachty's MM came behind the plate that was amazing and you guys off without the mash out of your back pocket and I said, I don't know how they remembered to have their mass that day..

"Okay. Let's get to the American theories start today obviously the headliner is the the series I'm going to be lucky enough to do starting at seven o'clock. Tonight we've got the Indians playing host to the Yankees you got Shane Bieber Garrett Cole a good old fashioned. Of Two aces one guy you know the best pitcher on the planet two years ago versus Shane Bieber's the best pitcher on the planet this year, what are you expecting in this series? Yeah. Mean this is going to be one of the best games of the entire postseason. I suspect you know what an unbelievable matchup shame bieber won. The MLB pitching triple crown wins the are strikeouts I gotta do that since Johan Santana and two, thousand six, and he not even be the most dominant picture in this game was Garrett Cole is pretty good. I looked up any postseason series game would match up and I might have missed one but the last. Game. One. Battle with a lower co by the area that I found was two thousand fourteen Clayton Kershaw as eerie won the MVP versus Adam wainwright who had a two three yards that year. So there's been some great ones we had Sherzer Colin game the world series last year, but this is just Terrific game one matchup for me the key thing in this series, and in this game, tonight is going to be how clean they play and I gotta say having watched the Yankees a lot this year they have not performed well on defense I was looking at defensive runs saved and there's no perfect measure of defensive play but the Indians were tied for second best in the regular season defensive run save they have an excellent defensive team Garrett Cole was talking about yesterday how the the Indians don't make mistakes in on the other hand. The Yankee seem to make a lot of mistakes the key guy for me in this series, labor. Taurus who has not had a good season he is not played well, defensively what about for you just some other factor that's jumping out of you. Yeah. I wasn't good point on the defense I watch Erin Moods game session the other day Friday or Saturday they made a bunch of airs and the look on his face was just discussed. Because that's been a problem on your ankles. Yeah. Obviously, it's the Cleveland offense. Are they going to be able to generate enough runs and I'm intrigued because yet they had one of the lower homerun rates in the majors. The Yankees allow the most home runs of any playoff team. You Know Garrett call had some of those homerun issues you know in the middle of the season not so much as last couple starts, but the Yankees do give up run so. That's to me. CLEVELAND'S GONNA have to figure out a way to knock it few the fence Jose Ramirez of course has been red hot Carlos Santana, great regular season, but he's heated up a little bit the last couple of weeks. So that's the key can Cleveland hit any home runs off the New York pitching and can the Yankees hit on the road the numbers the road splits for the Yankees this year are shocking. Great. Point. In fact, we had a note saying Sam. Millard this one of the twenty largest home roads blitz I. Forget how far he went back. This was history X. number of years but the twenty largest. Were Colorado Rockies, teams, and the other was the two thousand twenty so that yeah. Huge toll roads blitz this year. The. White Sox and Oakland Plankton a Lucas G Lido the obvious pick for the white sox start in Oakland Hey seuss Lazaro gets the start the young left-hander for the Oakland athletics we had serling the podcast yesterday and she mentioned the white sox fourteen in our game started by left-handers Lazardo left-hander. So I was a little bit surprised but maybe that's kind of where Oakland is with their rotation right now. Now, they don't have a clear number one I was surprised because Lazaros last appearance was actually in relief so I thought they might use them out of the end. This could be kind of a bullpen series for Bob Melvin right buster they had the lowest era In relief many team you know really deep bullpen saw even the Lazardo starting I would not expect him to go deep into this game maybe even just one time through the rotation.

Troubling: a death in Northern Ireland

"South This economists podcast is sponsored by linked in jobs. Hello and welcome to the intelligence on economists radio. I'm your host Jason Palmer every weekday. We provide a fresh perspective on the events shaping your world. A minority of South African people have steadied formal jobs too many, including a large fraction of the country's youth do piecemeal work or are unemployed altogether. We look at the efforts to bring the young into the workforce. And there's a lot of talk about public figures particularly candidates in America's upcoming presidential race speaking, multiple languages, what's with these polyglot politicians. But I. A funeral will be held today for a young journalist from Northern Ireland who was shot dead last week all for the loss of lira. Our hopes and dreams all of her Mazen potential with snuff type a single Barrick. Lira Mckee had been reporting on violent unrest in the city of Londonderry. We believe this to be a terrorist act. We believe it's been carved violent Republicans yesterday. A group called the new IRA took responsibility for the killing it even apologized. The incident was shocking reminder of the fragility of peace since the end of the Northern Ireland conflict known as the troubles. This was an attack on everybody in northern. It. Doesn't matter if you're Catholic or Protestant. British are this is an attack on democracy? The troubles began in the nineteen sixties and painted mostly Catholic Irish nationalists against the British army Northern Ireland police and mostly Protestant loyalists. For three decades violence and terror was a part of everyday life, the turmoil claimed more than three thousand five hundred lives, but in nineteen ninety eight the Good Friday agreement largely brought an end to the conflict today is about the promise of a bright future. Dave, and behold, a line can be drawn bloody past some low level violence continued, but this latest killing has fear and outrage. The funeral today of Larry Mckee is going to feel in many ways. Like, we'll most states occasion. Tom Wainwright is the economists Britain editor where expecting to see the Irish T show that the prime minister will say the president of island the secretary of the UK as well as low two local politicians from Nova Nyland, of course. And so it's going to feel like a big deal, and it really is a big deal in Northern Ireland. This kind of killing of innocent civilian in what seems to have been a terrorist attack something that really has shocked people. It's by no means the gnome since the peace agreements of twenty one years ago. This kind of thing is much less common than it used to be in people here really really shocked by what happened last week, and Tom what can you tell me about the group responsible for misbehaves death, new IRA and its relation to the other groups with IRA in the name, it's it's a bit confusing. Picture it is it really isn't. I think to understand that you've got to go back to the Good Friday agreement of nineteen ninety eight and. What happened? There was that the IRA and most Republicans agreed to end any kind of struggle and take their fight for the United Ireland to the debating chamber of the streets. But at the time there was some Republicans who disagreed with that to this represented, a capitulation, and these guys who are now widely noted dissident Republicans have continued that struggle on a fairly low level. But nonetheless, they are security worry five the security agency raised the threat in Northern Ireland is severe they have continued trying to police officers, for instance. And so why do the new IRA kill Lear mckie? Well, she seems to have been killed by stray bullets. She was watching a riot taking place in the city of Londonderry Derry as it's known to Republicans, and she was watching from next to police come and she was shot in the head and later died, and this riot was kicked off really after police had been raiding homes in the area shortly beforehand seems that they were concerned on the. The Easter rising some local Republicans might be out to coast trouble. And seems that some cycle dissident Republicans is this as a excuse to get that people on the streets and co some trouble and the new IRA said it was an accident and apologized there's some significance to that. Right. There. Is yet seems that they really feel as if that on the back photo of this that agreed which has said, the it's propensity is violence to said that the Republican coups, but they seem to be well aware that locally these kinds of acts of violence in which older NRI innocent civilians killed or injured go down extremely badly and really risk setting that goes back, and we've seen evidence of this already in dairy, the headquarters of a local political party, which is supported by the IRA people being smearing red painted handprints on their offices a form of protest and lately various Republican murals have been graffiti as well by people saying things like not in my name. Name. And so they think realize that this could set them back in a big way. Police also reporting that moving one hundred people have sent them with information about the killing and in a city like Derry, that's really unusual. This is not a place where people have historically been happy to talk to the police about Republican activists. So we could be seeing Quanta change. So do you get the sense from all that then that there is just simply less tolerance for the kind of violence that was so common during the troubles. I think that's right. I think since the Good Friday agreement which was almost exactly twenty one years ago. Many people in Northern Ireland of come to see the peace that's being achieved is enormously valuable, and the idea of going back to that is something that really worries a lot of people. And I think most observers thing that the chances of returns to scale violence, very slim, but any sign that violences on the rise is obviously a worry, especially at the moment with Brexit going on which is causing all kinds of problems for Northern Ireland. We've also got the problem of the Northern Ireland assembly having been suspended now for more than two years. So there's a feeling Northern Ireland is inevitable position so events like this do concern a lot of people that people worry that things are being destabilized that, but you mentioned Briggs in in passing there. Do you think that all the negotiations and the degree to which Northern Ireland has been such a lynchpin of the negotiations has sort of reignited tensions? It's certainly reignited tensions. Yeah. We haven't yet seen a big kicking off of large scale violence or anything like that. But tensions absolutely have been heightened. And it's not surprising because the peace deal made back in nineteen ninety eight really hinged in many ways on the UK an island shed membership of the European Union that help to enable these countries to have a border, which is not just open. But invisible, I mean, if you go there and drive between Northern Ireland and their public of island, you can do so without even realizing that you've crossed the Boda, and of course, membership of the EU means the two countries of members of the single. Markets, and so no customs checks needed and since nineteen ninety eight people know of Nyland being able to choose whether they take Irish or UK possibles in many ways, they've been allowed to feel as if they are either Irish Oprah show oath if they want and so the UK now leaving the European Union really will subject that to strain. And it's clearly pulling the UK an island upon a way that nobody on typically to twenty one years ago and many people particularly in the Republican community. Most of them voted to remain, by the way, think that Britain is in some way reneging on agreements that were made or hinted that twenty years ago, so it is a time of heightened tension. Yes. Tom. Thank you very much for joining us. Thank you.

Adam Wainwright: MLB Players Will '100 Percent' Go on Strike, Barring Change

"Long-term deals, obviously. It's no secret that the players are upset with how things are being handled this off season with Bryce Harper. Manny Machado, Adam Wainwright from St Louis cardinals chimed in on this. And he said in a recent radio interview that unless something changes there's going to be a strike one hundred percent and continued by saying that he's worried players might just walk out mid so on size are offsides. Major league Baseball Players Association will strike within the next few years onsides because you have a problem here. Flyers having to wait so long to get a contract or players not getting paid what they think they are worth. Now, there could be there should be some Justice baby from the players, but it's a problem in the sport right now. And yes, if it continues, which you have no reason to believe that it will stop. I will think that eventually be a strike the players will be fed up. And it'd be terrible for baseball. Because that's a sport. That is not as popular as it once was and if you alienate your younger fan base with the strike and not give them baseball. Yeah. You could lose a big portion
