Before the Sunday Night baseball game started, David Cohn had a conversation from the broadcast booth with Adam Wainwright as Wainwright was warming up. And there was a lot of interesting stuff in that. Please give a listen. Welcome back here in St. Louis bush stadium. We get ready for Sunday Night baseball as the Cardinals play host to the braves boot zombie with you David Cohen at hardo Perez Adam Wainwright getting loose in the outfield as we get ready to watch Wainwright and ota rizzy and David Cohen getting an opportunity while Adam Wainwright gets loose to have a chat. Absolutely. I mean, if you're a young pitcher at home, you get a chance now to see how a big league pitcher goes through his warm ups. I think it's ready for a big league game. And that's sort of you can't ask for a better guy than Adam Wainwright to kind of take us through a little bit in terms of what you're thinking about now, how much you're going to warm up in the outfield and then when you get to the get to the bullpen mound, then it's game FaceTime. Yeah. I apologize for my rattlesnake Ness. That I might be putting out right here, but these braised guys are getting loose right across from me. And I can't, you know, I can't be out here laughing and joking. You know what I mean? Yeah, absolutely. Understood. I got at least make them think I got mad. You have a set routine you go through in terms of warming up in the outfield. Yes, sir. Yes sir. I missed you. What'd you say? Do you have sort of a set routine that you go through in the outfield? I'll tell you. In my earlier years, I would have never agreed to do this. I'll be honest. But I just get so many times I get asked. About my warmup routine, because a little different, you know, I don't spend as much time long cost than warming up, but when I was in double-A, I had a real trouble. A real hard time getting balled down. Throwing a lot of high pitch count innings, a lot of balls up in the zone, a lot of arm side misses and every time on the mound, after that, after the last game, I really struggled like probably through the beginning of May. My double-A pitching coach, Mike Alvarez, had me just throw off the mound. So I'm about to get on the mound right here and just work on throwing the ball down downhill. 'cause I'm a downhill pitcher. So I don't make my money up in the zone. I've already done a lot of stuff inside to get my body loose. So we're just gonna get on the mat. We're gonna have some fun, but just remember you young pitchers out there, I get this in the big leagues and the minor leagues and little leagues too. Warming up is just warming up. Don't put too much into it. You know what I mean? Throwing the ball in the dirt, you're throwing the ball high. Does not mean you're gonna do that in a game. You hear a lot of people say, I knew I wasn't gonna pitch good because I warmed up like crap. And that's just not the way it is. All we're doing today is getting loose, just getting our body warm. Preparing to go out and dominate. Fall in love with the process, not the result. Yeah, I don't have any Velcro though. Got a Velcro. I'm gonna stick it in there for now. Well, we know you're getting ready to get in your routine going. Is there any amount of set fastballs you throw a curveballs or he's just getting your body loose like you said? And then you're good to go when you feel it. Yeah, I mean, you pick the right ball here. It's always, there's always a system, right? There's a certain amount of pitches that I'm around every time, but it doesn't have to be the same every time. You know, if you're if you're a robot to the exact same thing every time there's going to be games here and there. Or it doesn't happen exactly the same, and then you feel mainly defeated. And that's not the way pitching is. If it's a hot day, I might throw 5, 6 less pitches. And also, I know these guys behind me. They have a little game going with themselves and trying to guess how many pitches I'm on for a free game. So just to mess with them without them knowing it. I'm not change the end of the routine. I've just a little bit every now and then just keep them on their toes. You know what I mean? There you go. Right there, I worked up close and worked on downhill. All this is right here. This whole warmup routine. So warm up your teeth. It's all about getting loose. How much do you pay attention to your alignment? I'm paying attention to every little movement. So I want the ball coming off my hand exactly the same. Even my bullpens between starts. I don't throw very hard. I had a lot of teammates over the years ago. Man, how do you get anything out of that? You know, but I came up in the brave system. Between starts. You had to what it did is it taught you how to really learn your delivery. Tell you how to learn your delivery at a slope speed. And if you can do it at slow speed, you can do it fast. You can't do it slow.

"We're having train will be in Chicago this weekend. Crawl rabbits play by play man on Sunday Night baseball and we got the Cardinals and cubs and rabi is gonna be a fun day to put Adam Wainwright on a pedestal. You know, what do we do? The Cardinals a few weeks ago and it felt like we put Adam Wainwright and Albert two holes in yachty to lead on a pedestal, but Adam lain writes one of these guys buster where you think about people that are allegedly going to hang up their spikes, you look at his numbers, you look at the person and you look at the leadership, you look at his relationship with the city and the team and you wonder like, really? Like, where is he going? Why is he going anywhere? I mean, numbers have been outstanding. His curveball, while he's throwing it less, continues to be incredibly effective. He's using a synchron out more and more and he gets guys out. I just read the article on ESPN dot com about the 148 names that might be available. And while Wainwright and the cardinals are definitely going to get into the playoffs the way they're playing, think about if they weren't. He'd be at the top of every list. I mean, he'd be the Luis Castillo. He'd be the Frankie Monta, but he's that good and we're thinking about hanging it up. So yeah, I'm all about watching Adam Wainwright and you already do their business on Sunday Night. Yeah, Albert's made it clear. This is it. After all these years and yachty's got all that wear and tear of being a catcher, he's made it clear this is it. Adam Wainwright, and I'm looking forward to talking with him tomorrow. So I'm going to ask him about that like, are you sure are you sure, especially Carl because when you look at his career numbers, he clearly at this point is a borderline case for Hall of Fame. I don't think, you know, with the numbers that he has now that he would be voted in. The first time he'd be in a ballot, I do think that eventually he would get in, but if he pitched another year, another two years that kept on accumulating numbers and it took his win total and we don't care about wind totals as much as we used to, but took his wind total over 200, given his history and the postseason. I think he would move from being a borderline guy to be in, yeah, he's a Hall of Famer. Yeah, look, a good, strong postseason would benefit him. He had a you have to tell me where you think he is relative to a guy like shilling. I mean, shillings the guy for me that should be in the Hall of Fame, just based solely on his pitching. Is Adam Wainwright better than Kurt Schilling. And that's where they're close, she'll clearly have sort of a postseason pedigree that I don't think Adam's numbers suggest. Another ring wouldn't be the worst thing, but those are the I would always use Kurt as the bar and to me, Adams there, but he's got to do, as you said, a little bit more to get over that. Yeah, and I think during the course of broadcast and Sunday, you're also going to hear another part of Adam Wainwright's life, and that is music. And it'll be fun to hear some of the song we're about some of the songwriting that he's done during his time in baseball. By the way, before and I don't mind telling this story here in the podcast because I know David Cohn is too busy with all the broadcast he's doing to ever listen to this, but before we had our call Zoom call yesterday, I reached out to Andy Jacobson our producer and I said, hey, when we talk about Wainwright and the Hall of Fame, we need to extend that to our friend David Cohn. Because when you look at his numbers, okay? Adam Wainwright Nick his career wars around 42. David Wright's David Cohn's career war, 62.3. He's in the same statistical neighborhood as guys like Juan marichal and Don Drysdale, who you know are in the Hall of Fame. He's got plenty of company right there. There were a number of years where he was the hired gun, like any team. You go trade for David Cohn a 194 wins at 3.46 ERA, pitching most a lot of his career in the American League east. You know what? Let's go voters. No argument for me. I agree with you. I mean, when we first, you know, we're told he was being considered for the job. You do a lot of research on him. A is a person B is a pitcher. I mean, obviously we covered him throughout his career, but all those numbers that you suggested and his ability to do it on 5 different jeeves and his ability to win rings, all those things do add up, and you're absolutely right. I think he is under valued and underappreciated. Statistically, the war is wonderful, but I think perception wise, maybe because he bounced around, he didn't wear one uniform, hurts in the eyes of the public, like how good was he, but if you were there to witness the perfect game, if you were there to see him get hired in September or traded in July. That was the guy you won on your team. And I'm all on the buster train with this one. I agree with you. And especially in the context of somebody like Adam Wainwright, because he does stack up very favorably. And if you're going to bring up Hall of Fame for Adam Wainwright, you have to mention David Cohen. So a teammate that we have who already has been voted in the Hall of Fame is.

What's going on. man. How are you. I'm doing all right doing all right. Yeah the only thing that slowing them down is the threat of weather. Even down to the tuesday night wasn't a whole lot of precipitation there. That happens fairly often which can be frustrating but Man it's been it's been fun to watch the pitching come round fun to watch the cardinals kind of i feel like turn into more of a complete team as this year has moved along. What have you noticed most about the way the team has Kind of I guess looked a little bit different improved. A little bit evolved over the first month of the season. Well i i think the the starters the last couple of weeks that's been the big difference you know what i mean. It's amazing how everything else seems to fall in line. When you're getting six solid innings the guy take involved the beginning of the game. You know kim has been very good wainwright. He had a little bit hiccup in his last start which he's been very good. You know going complete games. A couple of times This year. I mean he really is kind of a guy that You pencil amend maybe the number three or four guy into rotation and you secretly hope in maybe even expected he's gonna pitch like number two you know and he has the ability to do that and you know jack clarity's been better. "Th twenty twenty one edition of the program happened to be with you and happy to have some cardinals action to talk about the news breaking last night at the cardinals and wayne right. We'll give it another go and twenty twenty one a one year deal for wainwright and it was officially announced by the club today. Of course incredible couple years for the right hander. Who now will return again. Wainwright had a pretty remarkable Two thousand eighteen the final year that five year just shy of one hundred million dollar extension. He signed after twenty thirteen spring training right before the season started. Add to see what he's done over the last couple of years. Twenty nine thousand nine hundred twenty and what. He's position to continue to do this year. And maybe even beyond is pretty remarkable. So i know people have been perhaps more than just a bit frustrated awaiting around for the off season market to get moving. The cardinals are no exception But we'll wait and see if any more moves are to come so we'll talk a little baseball. So we're going to listen to a performance and interview we recorded earlier this month. Here's that show. Over the past few months, I haven't been able to listen to as much music as I'd like, because so much of my listening time has been devoted to shows and podcasts about politics. The election. And Cove it But when I do listen to music, really good music. I feel especially vulnerable to the mood, whether it's joy or sadness, and that's how I felt when I listen to the new album by Loudon, Wainwright and Vince Giordano of songs from the 19 twenties and thirties. It's the period Yordano typically draws from with the 11 piece band. He leads the Nighthawks. During normal times. The band attracts devoted followers who come to listen and dance. He plays tuba base and bass saxophone. This is not the music you'd associate with Loudon Wainwright, who's best known for writing and performing his own songs, which range from confessional songs about family dysfunction to satirical songs about politics and other issues. His Children include singer songwriters Rufus and Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright, Roach, and they sometimes write songs about family, too. Loudon, Wainwright and Vince Giordano previously worked together on the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, which was set during Prohibition and was about Gangsters who made bootleg liquor and who served it in nightclubs in Atlantic City. Giordano and his band performed a lot of the music for the show. Loudon Wainwright, saying a couple of the songs the title track of their new album, I'd Rather lead a band is a song from the Fred Astaire Ginger Rogers movie. Follow the fleet. The album also features songs by Rodgers and Hart, Fats Waller, Harold Arlen Frank, Lesser and others.
