"Welcome back to WJR is building Michigan. We continue our conversation tonight with Steve Klay. Well, the president of the Michigan building, and construction trades council, and Ed coleco, the statewide director of Michigan's helmets to hardhats and tell us about your time in the service. What was your passion? What did you do really well? Well, I, I don't know that. I did anything really well. But I was always myself with people that did really well. As part of the game though, isn't it? That said joined in the late eighty joined the reserves and transition into the guard always been in artillery, or the military. Police had a couple of deployments one in two thousand seven eight and one in two thousand fifteen sixteen both of the Middle East. The second one was was probably my most proud, I commanded a high Mars unit, and we had extensive service in three different countries. My passion has always been the leader of an officer has always been training, troops and make sure everybody's ready for battle. And we had the ability to experience that twice in really prove that what we did really work. And so now when I'm working trying to get servicemembers who haven't really potentially had the opportunities that I had are we had attempt to capitalize on them really to bring them out bring them into this world. It's not a new world but it's the world I think we've often overlooked lead. We've pulled all of our kids nowadays and k twelve you know. Get ready for college go to college and really make something of yourself, and we skipped over the skilled trade, which really is an opportunity that we're not looking past anymore. And I think the K twelve starting to do a job there in the military service of out of these people went through their K, twelve not thinking about the skill Twitter trade. So I think we're opening up there, I to this new career possibility really the earning potential that they have to the program is outstanding. They've got the GI Bill to mass, some of their wages and even give them up to what a journeyman would make during many years of their apprenticeship. There's no experience required. Even though experience help you don't have to ST set earlier, just that military experience. They get through going through the rain is what really after in the benefits package and killed trades in Michigan is outstanding with medical retirement pension, so enable to, you know, whenever you're a salesman and you have the best product, there's nothing better. So I really feel that in selling the this product that skilled trades. And the apprenticeship program to our vets who really may not know, or maybe they do go on, I can help them in any way to get there quicker. That's really what drives me in every day for me. Some days are so busy. I don't even know what I'm doing after write down notes, and look and see. But boy, is it fun. And Steve mentioned earlier to he said, even if we just one person's life, and I've had a couple of experiences so far people have contacted me back and said, I what we've done has changed their life. So it's not just a metric fame in the numbers. It's a metric seen any individual somewhat subjective opinions of the veterans that were helping in it sounds like you have a real passion for this job, obviously comes through the veterans, doesn't it? It does. You know, I think in general the veterans are there because they serve their country. They feel they got to do something to help our great country continue on its path through history. And when you're going to help, a veteran tumbled doing that double ten so helping there's nothing about it really than helping veterans Steve. Think we we forgot about you. We haven't, you're also tell us about your service experience, and what brought you into the trades. Yeah. So you know, I was in eighteen year old that had an interest in the traits. I had just a very limited opportunity for exposure, but I served on the USS Dwight D Eisenhower aircraft carrier in my time in in the navy. I wasn't electricity. So it really provided me an opportunity to really validate that, you know, I wanted to continue my path in the exposure that I had in the construction trade. And, you know, electrical was something that I was always very interested in again, had very limited opportunity for exposure. But you know, as many veterans would say those were the good days, you know, I learned a lot about a pathway in the construction trades being electric, and I also learned a lot about myself as a person, and that if you want to get something you need to work hard to get in meet your goals. Now when you transition from being a veteran to being a civilian construction person there was no hardhats to helmets. Did you have trouble making the jump? Well, it, it wasn't definitely the pathway that we currently have, in place, you know, being electric, I was kind of out on my own. I came home and look for individuals and companies that were specifically looking for electricity. Some of my military experience was useful. Some of it was not. But I believe that the doors that were opened to me where because of my military service and walk us through your process when you were vet how was the reception to what you were doing. Well, when I when I transitioned back, you know, being in the guard or reserves my career, I was active duty for training, or for a couple of deployment, and we did have a transition process outside of that. Deployment say talks about jobs and, and, and if you weren't fully employed or unemployed in what we can do about that. So so might experience to that. It was nothing out of the ordinary, I would say I can't say that being in the garden reserves for over thirty years. I didn't hear much about the helmets hard hats program, and I think that's why we're making those inroads now to get into in front of those guard and reserve troops. But when a soldier our service, number rather does reach out through the system or if they tried to get into the system and they can't even register if they've each out, just by contacting me, I naval to get with them. Now this is a Michigan situation. So I'm able to meet within that they want, if not by phone, or by Email, I'll come out to their house, and go through help them. Register bring my. Computer, right with me. I've got admin rights, the website so I can fix any mistakes. They Don or get past their, their password, because a lot of times, they forget the password, I can help them with that. And I've also put together kind of a portfolio of all the different options that they had in the different trades. And so, again, depending on their skill set. We may line him up with two or three different trades. They haven't thought of but also with how what the trade needs are right now? There's some trade that are looking for people right away and other trade looking for people right away, or there may be an apprenticeship starting up in a in a month or maybe not one starting up for a year. So depending on the service members need as well with how they're doing with their family and just life in general, it, it's almost a custom fit for every person that comes through. And again that one on one approach, we have really helped them settle in, in, in sometimes a prophet, take a month or two and were able to give them kind of that thought that okay, somebody's got my back there, helping me through this. I'm gonna steady in this program and get it done. A lot of times in my experience. You asked me Maxine earlier. We, we make those initial inquiries, and then we kind of let it die in the vine. And we, we wake up someone gets back with us. So I'm able to get back with keep pushing the envelope. And again from Minnesota. That's one thing that we hear has been very successful for them and they keep lists as I'm doing. So they'll touch back with their service numbers in a month in two months, and three months and find out what they're doing how they're doing if they haven't done anything continue to problem towards looking for that career in the skilled trades, but it's going to be reassuring for a veteran to know that they've got somebody like you to talk to, to find out how it's going, I think that's part of the help. Yeah, they know they're not alone. Somebody's got their sick. Steve. We heard it can be confusing for a veteran returning from service to connect when the new job. How do you feel hardhats to helmets kinda helps that? Well, I think it gives them a path. That's not a brochure again. It's not an answering service. It's not a website. It's at Cleal and, you know, being able to make that personal touch having the opportunity for that veteran to tell his story, what his interests are. I think that, that really provides a foundation for what we're hoping to do into the future in that is, providing that one on one touch to custom fit veterans into careers. We got just sixty seconds left, actually, I'll take that back. We have thirty seconds left and how can we contact you can I'll say it quick? It's kind of funny, but after the Frank Beckmann show when he asked me, that's my sister called me in. I said, well, what what's up season? I just wanted.

They call themselves. The original six. Are just, you know, all the young adults, and they're just so much fun to be around, so helpful if you needed them there be right there to help you there. It's wonderful. That's all I have to say, and then mom has a young grandchild. So she's got the old ones in their thirties and twenties, and then she has a four year old grandchild. How is that they range? Now, we're waiting for great grandchildren someday. Oh my goodness. So last question advice, if if each each of you could give a little advice to the Mons listening out there with all of your wealth of experience. What would you, you know, biggest advice? She would tell these new moms. So these these next two thousand and nineteen months, I would say just try to enjoy being a mom, it is really God's work. And just relax as best. You can be a mom. Great advice in right in. I think what you're doing. Now with your children is what I think is beautiful here, a mom, and you listen, and you take time for each one on an individual basis, it might be just an afternoon out or something. Which would include Courtney thrown who's the VP of marketing all gathered here today to talk about a most complicated topic to be sure looking at what's ahead for those of you who are preparing for or are already in a Medicare plan, and it's that time of the year to Medicare's annual election periods. And if this is the first time for you, or even if you are already enrolled, it's critical that you understand the pitfalls when dealing with your Medicare coverage and most importantly, how to avoid them, and we should probably begin with the basics the real basics. Kevin because you've been in this business for fifteen years or so and then decided you know, what you didn't like what was going on. I'm going to create my own senior health Medicare facility over there in Farmington hills. So your local to be sure, but you didn't like what was going on when it. Came to trying to inform the seniors about what to expect when it came to Medicare because there's so many choices you need to tell you that. Yeah. It's it's what we're living in breathing and sleep and right now. But yeah, it we wanted to focus a lot more than education seemed like the the system itself is designed around to sell and stuff. And we wanted to make sure that we're able to educate our our members fully so they're making the right choices. And and. Also, servicing them. I mean, we call ourselves. A medi Medicare concierge because annually these things change we've got more changes going on now than ever. We've got more people turning sixty five than ever, and that's increasing through the next couple of years. And we wanted to make sure that we were creating a place where people could see everything no everything and make the right choices. Because some of these things are permanent summer temporary. And we'll get to those the course of the the program as well. So you set up a senior health Medicare and Medicare university out there in Farmington hills, where you have people answering questions people are phoning in to the course of the year. You're holding seminars out there and Courtney at this time of the year. You're holding seminars all over the metro Detroit area. Yes, that's right. We've actually had a great turnout and really great feedback. We're helping people figure this out. It's really complex. So it's nice to see that. We're able to help people. What happens at the seminars while Kevin just wiles? Everybody with presentation, skills and power your PowerPoint there. I made that it's pretty good. Oh, okay. But yeah, so we have a lot of people come out. And I feel like we know we keep kind of general because there's so many different situations that one could be in. We have a actually a couple of different seminars coming up, and there's actually one tomorrow in Troy, and then we've got one coming up next month on and Veterans Day. So any of the veterans out there listening, we we're going to put an emphasis on that for that for that show. All right. So you've got one tomorrow night Troy, and they're usually like we did last year there are three sessions through the course of the day and early evening yet. We've got.
