"Entire WGN TV morning news team week days four to ten seven twenty WGN we are back in his new year's eve talk and some of the the traditions that people have for new year's eve some amazing ones were gonna share from around the world we shared some that seem more trouble than they're worth and some potential health hazards as as well plus your that's three one two ninety one seventy two hundred we've gotten quite a few of those and we will share the Max you've got one a personal kind of family yes well Hey I. V. as we're talking I'm struck by all these have one thing in common they're good luck good luck for the coming year and door to ward off bad luck or evil spirits and my mother was so god rest your soul she she was also Italian through and through we didn't wear red underwear but she used to always say on new year's day not new years eve new years day don't eat fish for your money will swim away and don't eat chicken or your money will fly away chickens are really that good at flying she she was she said eat pork then you'll live off the fat of the land why it sounds we should get like a gong thirty something all right seven twenty WGN in and on the line with us I think from in Montreal I think one of the things the traditions that people should it here too in Quebec is to where and I think Max the boy would probably concur with this is that in order for good luck in twenty twenty should make a large purchase from BBQ Quebec dot com next we'll go back to hi that's a really great idea yes Sir so let's talk about some of the different things you would mention that in the past people thought if they had a you know a kettle grill or they had some sort of barbecue grill are smaller than their fine right it's just like any other kind of practical thing in your house that seal a washing machine or dryer once you have one you don't need two or three but grills are different and now you're finding people are are needing more than just the one they want is I don't see as many as you can get but certainly quite a few exactly exactly and that actually in Canada the thing that everybody ads is there a gas grill so did did do usually you just turn all your burner elm maximum heat and you just drill everything you can in turn and turn interview meat until it's really try and then you put some catch up or something so now at least use wax one Max we actually that's another great thing so okay so so this is this is where I think our opinions would differ if if I heard you correctly you said that you should just turn your gas grill on very high and then turn it on some catch up or is it in the past I think what Max to say yeah that's yeah that's what they used to do until maxim J. P. and crew who started up and now they're showing people the true way the true way so what are some of the popular things Max and I have talked Max here makes good we've talked about a number of things whether it's the popularity of the of the kamado those or the pallet smokers what kind of things are really catching on in Quebec that's the that's the thing like now with the people are starting to realize that begin to others being with their barbecue so the starting to lower coal smoke psalm and the the are also doing their own reeds and everything so you're talking about they can model and the we sell a lot of Flack about to all kind.

"Seven twenty WGN is staying here with you in the skyline studio talk a little bit of movies not only just the making of movies and what's out we're certainly going to get into some of those but also kind of just that thought process and just the way the whole landscape on the movie making and watching experience has changed and we've seen things that were a compromise on the on the streaming site now get to be as I think as appreciated and as highly thought of as maybe some of those traditional ways in the theater on the line with us calling us from Peoria is the one on the block buster Blake subs and Blake remember I know he's been on with us a couple times we've talked a brand new gin friend of mine that works out in Hollywood has been one of the special effects guys in so many different movies whether saxman movies are the guardians of the galaxy lord of the rings and and all that kind of stuff was part of that Oscar team that did the curious case of Benjamin buttons and that was one of the things that they did not always in super high profile ways but even even sometimes even like I think they did the sex and the city movie where they had a cat A. D. H. Sarah Jessica Parker or whatever like just go in there and make her just freshen her up a little bit you know you weren't necessarily making Robert deniro young again and so that's something that's been around for a little while I think that the the uses for that are going to be explaining David have wondered during the break is is how expensive could that be is that something that you can really attach I guess the price tag of value to especially S. as technology improves well and it's something that can work hand in hand with actual practicality so my example for that is both the Irishman because there are scenes you can actually watch a lot of the world that they just shot the wall behind the scenes stuff that was done on the day like when they were actually making the film and in Europe actually made up to look young but then the de aging is just digital correction and there was another use of that in a film semi recently guardians of the galaxy falling to the opening of the film features a very young looking Kurt Russell and all that happened there was Kurt Russell's makeup artist would work with them for a week I think thirty five or forty years had come and said well I can make you look young but it's not going to be perfect for the camera and his personal make up artist did a fine job but then James got in the crew ended up digitally kind of you know touching in doing a little touch up work on it and it ends up looking pretty flawless in the movie I mean he's and and a lot of it as Kurt Russell pointed out in the press talking about the movie is once they made me look young I had to play yeah different I had you do all the things that I had done and probably twenty five years I had to make it look like I was in my early thirties if that and it's like well he I think is a perfect example of this working very well he inhabits it very well and of course this is like the first five ten minutes of the movie so it's not like they're gonna ride that out you know for two hours but in the case of the Irishman it kind of comes and goes and you do see a much older rubber care FAQ I think age and older I think so I have one points yeah so it's I think it's something as far as cost goes it's going to be a film by film basis I think what they need to do is stick to ng it with excellent make up and if they're able to do that it looks less chancy I think would be the word I would use like it so noticeable at times and if you go back ten years okay just ten years where this could technology was used in trial legacy to be age Jeff bridges to his much younger tron age style I need it doesn't hold up now is that movie enjoyable yes I do enjoy that fell in fact it was one of the first things I watch on Disney plot and I was kind of marveling at how like wow ten years ago we thought this the aging was pretty good it really doesn't hold up very well it looks really cartoony happens then when you flip over and watch something like the Irishman you're like wait a minute these guys are seventy six and seventy eight years old and they're making him look like they're in their forties and that's pretty good and it looks pretty solid now is the perfect now but the more you watch the film you just forget that it's even happening and I think that that was intentional and to to be very fair to the cell watching it at home on my television which I've done purses when I thought the theater there is a difference it would have been better for everyone to see this in the theater but unfortunately this still was a if there's a big contentious for several weeks there is a big contentious argument going on between Netflix and the exhibitors specifically I think with AMC theatres network they empty could not come to an agreement on a wide release from the spell so then they ended up doing several things like just showing it in specific exhibitors for short spurts major cities got to Chicago had it for quite awhile I think there are three screens at one point concurrently showing it in Chicago but none of them were in a in the theater and then in New York they actually converted the Belasco theater which is a Broadway theater but I saw Bryan Cranston do not work in an age well they converted it to show the Irishman and people were paying up to ninety seven dollars a ticket to see it and Sidney orchestra hall I mean you're looking at as for movies like this at which you know I classify as an adventure film yeah not not like I would adventures in game but that was also very much a big event sallam the special arrangements should and could be made I think in a lot of in these cases this is a film I think is very ambitious from a technical standpoint I think it was very ambitious from a link standpoint the storytelling I think it's actually I think the acting is excellent I think the editing this movie is not nominated for an editing after I'd be very surprised the machine maker the longtime collaborator with Martin Scorsese if you if you surf around some Twitter you're gonna find a cheese burger I regard it highly as the queen she is probably the finest editor one of the top top editors of all time and I I hope she she is very much a consideration and and just keeps on the awards on her mantle this year for this film she did an excellent job so I yeah I mean this is a special case I think that a lot of good movies come out this year this is unique in that it really hit its audience at home as opposed to theater right because it because you think of it and and this will be the last on this then we got to get into some of the the star were stuff that people are are waiting for but yeah it's got everything about it is is blockbuster in the theater major release and everything is so for them to be able to do it due to the way that they that they wanted to in the the length of the movie and all that and they keep it just on Netflix is is pretty is is different right I think it's kind of brave right right and kind of ambitious and up by may by most accounts it was excessive a successful things to talk about the aging thing we brought up a little bit whether it's Carrie Fisher or whether it's some of the other ones what yes of the day yeah well this was a you mentioned the event nature of the Irishman and I was going to transition into Star Wars I remember when Star Wars came out I was in my early twenty something like that in the charged an unusual amount for admission to spend the first Star Wars movie and it was I mean it it was probably two or three dollars more than the regular movie price kind of calling attention to itself as an event that this was going to be a big deal and I remember sitting in the movie theater when I I don't know the name it star cruiser maybe when it comes down from the top of the screen the audience let out a collective gasp was so like we have not seen this before this is worth the extra two dollars or whatever and then when they go to light speed I mean those those two points were like the audience like who this is a new thing what they had done things in ways that you had not seen before that even the noises it I've ever seen one of those documentaries about the making of it you know just the the noise of the blasters you know how they were like hitting like telephone wire like just the way that they were being able to create things that hadn't been seen or done before or in that way you mentioned the this the de aging that they're doing and some of this and then also kind of the foray into the into the streaming with the Mandalorian they've done a great job I don't know if you guys have noticeable when it comes to like the Wilkie's into bacha the de aging is worked great I think that feeling ill the first it's great the yours are getting younger and younger by the minute but so without any kind of spoiler alert if you want to get into a little bit of the well actually before that will use that now in the last segment we'll talk about the new the new feature film that's output but your thoughts on the Mandalorian because this is something where and I think Star Wars fans have a lot of different ways to consume and enjoy kind of that product whether it's just the all those movies that I jump around from era to era you've got the theme parks you've got all that kind of stuff and I thought this was a really cool kind away to have bite size stuff that's very entertaining very well received and it's right there on the and that new Disney plus one of the things about being a Lorena jumps out for me and this is more of a personal thing than a critic standpoint critical G. point is I love samurai in western storytelling there's a big overlap of that throughout the history of filmmaking from John Ford to caress island back and it just the what what made Star Wars because there's there's Keith Clinton better taken from a New Hope that George Lucas is borrowed from the searchers for example are you a lot of that style is present in the Mandalorian me he's very much like a ronin a samurai who is sort of you know roaming in doing what he feels he can do if it calls for it and at the same time even gas the the comedy elements that work very well especially with acting everyone's new favorite thing baby on a we don't have the actual name of the character yet but for calling him in at the same time every week seen different I it's not like your typical show right now where I feel we've become so engrossed in the long drawn out arcs whereas there's clearly something going on in the Mandalorian but it's not full focus it's more like where they going this week what are they doing this week every episode has been a little bit different than the last one and you know there's a few threads we keep them all laying this past this week's episode that they released Wednesday so the day before rises sky Walker was released not only did it have a couple and a few little details and sort of make an appearance in ride the sky Walker nice planning on Disney's part but also and it's subtle it's not anything over I'm just saying if you pay close attention like all wait a minute that appeared in the other thing it's call it's a good review on your leg it's hard to make an audience that as as they point out gas like that first time the star destroyer flew on screen while was chasing the panties for like it's it's there's things like that that are just so unique and when you can get that if you got I'll grab it and you got to run with it and you got to find a new way to make it happen again and I think the Mandalorian is able to be both fun engaging if this type of story telling that we weren't really getting every week on television and at the same time it it borrows from all these cool girl very rich storytelling elements that it it all in a universe of Star Wars universe which were all very familiar with very fond of eat they built interesting enough characters this kind of see where the scales now long term I hope that this show is able to pick up in season two and really have some some strong foundations maybe some long drawn out our center up we'll see what happens by the by large I'm happy every week I watch it so I'll put it there I'm a big fan but it is cool you've got this sort of space age based thing brings up the samurai stuff you guys a little bit of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western kinda feel to it as well and with John Fabbro there you've got what is we've always said it's kind of like the secret you know kind of sauce when it comes to Marvel is is humor is there's a little bit of humor based in it as well so we're gonna take a break when we come back or to talk about the brand new movie that's out there what people are saying without spoiling any of it I know there's a bunch of cliffhangers I've heard there's some things to either avoid or not know about and we're going to hear about that we've got to have happened with us and of course on the phone with the blockbuster breaks of quick break we'll be back it's staying here on seven twenty WGN.

"Very own WGN and we're back on a Tuesday morning with my colleague from governors state university I am professor bill Cressy of governors state university A. K. A. professor fraud and with me tonight is my wing man all night has been doctored David garland I I but I should give your middle name David Hamilton gallon Campbellton is my middle name there you go and you get residuals from the show no I don't but professor of history at governors state university and we're talking about this this incredible book that you wrote about an incredible human being and the title the book is a terrible thing to waste Arthur Fletcher and the conundrum of the black Republican so we here's here's this this guy from from Kansas is centrally of goes off fights with Patton in World War two gets injured comes back goes to a small college in Kansas but plays football plays pretty good football gets picked up by the LA rams just for the summer exhibitions okay but then it gets picked up by the Baltimore colts who actually were probably the worst football team that year in football history so this is before the Jenny unite is there absolutely yeah in fact they folded and had to be reconstituted for the job Johnny unitas era about the only good thing that came out of the cold in the nineteen fifty season was a certain quarterback by the name of why a tittle who who then went on to some other little hanky **** town that that would be the New York Giants L. okay that's right New York City I work where David's originally from that's why although I'm not actually from the meadow lands okay well I don't think they were playing that either so they were playing I think it with a plan to Yankee Stadium they may have been of there's a lot of in that era the many of the football teams have the same names as the local baseball team or I right well in any event so here we've got Arthur Fletcher he's playing he's the first African American on the Baltimore colts yes indeed and Baltimore if if he had bad experiences with the Klan in Indiana he's he had some bad experiences in Baltimore as well because Maryland is south of the Mason Dixon line yes it is and but so how many seasons with the with the cold well he was just with the cold for not only he did not finish that season he only played two games while but it's in a physician he he was an end yes but he played poorly well that's good to know there it all the way up to the pros and then let's choke which is sad but but but it wasn't the end of his career no need and we're only a chapter to this okay with then what happened after that well being a football star with a college degree who had spent much of his college years working odd jobs around the state capitol building and Topeka is the capital city of Kansas he had made a number of political connections and so there was a fellow running for governor at the time and sorry bill but I'm blocking on his name I have the book in front of me also to you but well that's okay okay ran for governor Gary in for governor basically asked art to campaign for him in the African American areas of the state and when he won he made are to the deputy highways commissioner because of all of the experience with highway weld it it happened that's polity as the politics of it here he took very good advantage of the job it was after all during the construction of the Eisenhower interstate system and everyone who everyone wanted to have highways build towards them or near them and write some of the great movers and the shakers then got in touch with with Fletcher and he helped make that happen while okay okay so so so he went and here's a you wrote a book about a guy who played to get to the NFL and then build some highways and that was it that was the end of his career and no after getting run out of Kansas almost literally on a rail he moved to northern California and continue to get involved in politics found however that as an African American Republic in the bay area was not particularly conducive to people of his particular political stripe moved up to a small desert town in the south east of Washington state known as Pasco part of the tri cities region out there okay which was the perfect spot for him to begin to develop some of his ideas about black capitalism and self help which he did and he had suffered an incredible tragedy at that point in his life and so he could certainly relates to the the concerns of most of his constituents at that point in what was the tragedy well his first wife committed suicide geo jumped off the bay bridge in October of nineteen sixty all my goodness all my goodness and I mean there's there's really never a good way of explaining that to this and if anyone's listening in your it's after midnight if you're thinking that Hey there's plenty of hot lines call than their people their staffing them that can talk to you help yeah absolutely yeah so he's working on these new ideas and how did he sell those ideas well he caught the attention of a young governor in Washington state by the name of Dan Evans Dan Evans was something that really doesn't exist anymore as bill very well knows the liberal Republican and Dan Evans by the time nineteen sixty eight comes around is looking for someone who might be able to run for lieutenant governor the these positions were independently elected and the lieutenant governor's seat was Kerr was held at the time by a Democrat so Evans picked I'm going to cut you off there we've we've got a call coming into the W. G. and hot line that's the who hi caller who's on the air with us Kelly how are you this is Kelly Richmond pope my my partner in crime your partner in crime now are you going well we're we're hanging in there Kelly but we we certainly miss having you here in studio can you tell us from what secret layer you calling from well I am involved in my land and sowed my factor if you're talking about Bob like that back off there you go there you go and your own Baltimore on some secret mission for the government no I am your presentation tomorrow all day I marinated easy that's for the our offices are inspector general's that they've been on the news a little bit inspectors general contractor right yeah general yes it's it's kinda like attorneys general its inspectors general right so well very good you're talking to them about crime I take well I'm Sharon other thing is okay nine documentary about the dictionary nine fifty three point seven million dollars five round fine if I return while in and lessons learned that actors general should think about pay attention here in out is it and how it could have been prevented out the rest black element what so the the the the they are they treating you well are they going to be treating you well putting up a nice bottle one in the morning and I have to be there at eight o'clock in the morning but I always say Kelly it's what fraud I never sleeps okay and you either way okay well tell you what I'm going to let you get to your hotel baby get a couple hours a shot I okay sorry I what are we doing okay so far yeah you don't bring it down the operative book if you're talking about really interesting okay we'll tell you what we look forward to having you back in the studio next week okay irate okay we'll be talking about a lot of fraud and a lot of you know are are dupes as is is you call them and such and because I've got a couple of good ones I got to share with you and and second I get interviewed for NPR about what you can learn from tax return well that's good news to today hasn't had yeah yeah yeah send that to you we look back about it that sounds fantastic well you know I'm gonna go back to to my colleague here David gallon for a bit and then we go through the news so what thank you so much for calling in yeah have a great night okay you too now and then the safe travels okay well that was my as there is we call you to a partner in crime professor Kelly Richmond pope calling in from Baltimore where she's going to be addressing inspectors general now trying to keep things honest in the government and speaking of keeping things honest in the government let's go back to Arthur Fletcher yes okay what now where was weird we leave off with him well he had been tapped by governor Dan Evans of Washington state to run for the post of lieutenant governor again of that state in nineteen sixty eight okay kind of a pivotal year in American politics yeah yeah that was the year that he campaigned with Shirley Temple he was being driven around the state by none other than Ted Bundy as you mentioned earlier right into who just like did not develop in the campaign to be a driver well Ted Bundy as Arthur Fletcher son described it has described him was kind of a the young Republican in penny loafers which he sort of had a charisma that would later serve him as he definitely has reached the terriers are out of the ladies killer literally and there's really anyway yeah case yeah he wanted to there were death threats coming in Arthur Fletcher who was a black man running for state by state office and he was getting death threats and perhaps nasty calls from various points on the political spectrum both both ends one could say and so the driver Bundy served also as a bodyguard slept outside of Fletcher's bedroom door almost like like a watch dog well well tell you what let's come back to more about this fascinating story about Arthur Fletcher in this book that you've written rate after the news which is being presented by Victor von other families come forward with claims that Chicago police officers raided the wrong home at family tells CBS channel two officers used force on their children Dominique will since now calling for the release of officer body cam video something the department has so far refused according to reporting by CBS and the the hospital a hospital rather in Pennsylvania is looking for the source of a deadly bacteria that is killed now three infants and its neonatal intensive care unit doctors at the Geisinger Medical Center in Monterey county are now taking precautions by sending mothers who are likely to look to the liver prematurely two other regional hospitals and back locally as St Charles north high school football players suffered a.

Mentioned in the sabre. We both bought condos this past year first time buying which is always something you're jumping into it's a little bit risky. And of course, the market is cooled off a little bit the stock market specifically and housing markets across the country have softened a bit. How are we doing in Chicago? We haven't softened yet. But there's a reason we haven't thought mean at the upper end things are why talked about some super fabulous sales, but up in the million two to three million range. They're they've slowed down quite a bit. But in general are market has we have the advantage of not having been white hot in the last few years. So the Seattle's the Portland's the San Francisco's where prices were going up in the double digits ten eleven twelve in some cases, fourteen percent. They have started to cool in part in part. Because prices went up so fast that Ford ability disappeared and people said they either pulled back or they bought less house, or whatever it was all and then so the combination of that and rising. Interest rates really cool down those markets. We've been rising in a very steady way far more modestly. I was just using numbers. Like ten eleven twelve we've been in the three percent range. We are generally. We're the top twenty cities. We're at the back the seventeenth through twentieth..
