A Developer's Summer, with Underscore David Smith

"Hello everyone this is David sparks joined by my fellow co-hosts Mr. Stephen Hackett I Stephen Hey David. How are you good I feel like this week is kind of putting the capper on our W. WDC coverage. Finished up last week, we were able to talk about quite a bit during the during ww see, and then we talked about our Betas last week this week. We thought we bring in somebody who has a unique and interesting perspective on it. Welcome back to the show David Smith. You it's A. It's a pleasure to be here I mean I was? It's an honor to be on power users so I'm glad to be able to kind of come in gas lend a developer perspective to all the announcements that we just had. Thinking that you'd be the perfect guest for it by pay, we just had him on and then I looked twenty seventeen, so. I don't know what happened there in my head, but The you know David you were telling me before the show started. How many wwe cs have you participated in a believe? This is number twelve for me and my first one is in two thousand and nine, and I've been essentially attended in some form ever ever since so it's been like this regular fixture in my family that as far as like in which. That's longer than my children have. Our old, so like from their perspective, daddy always disappears for a week in June like that's just a part of a part of life that I'm sure they expect happens to every father in the world. They just June is when they go to California, but that's. It was a very unusual year to just actually just stay at home and be here, but sort of not here. kind of station in the basement to a just a after shift myself to California time, and then also just there's so much to do. But generally speaking, it was definitely a different year than all the others that I've had the privilege of experiencing. As, someone who's been W. DC with you? I think we one year we stay together and the relay Commun-. The but I feel like you are somebody that really always. My observation takes advantage of WBZ. You're always hustling to get to meetings and and get the content and I feel like you are in my mind for lack of a better term, a lunch pail developer just show up and you get the work done, and I've always appreciate that about you. So, let's talk, you know. You watched it from home this year I guess That was that. It was different I. Mean on the one hand. It was kind of Nice to be able to like my wife set next to me on the Sofa and we questioned on our TV, and it was. It was kind of Nice to share that with her. Because while we sometimes, we'll do that for things like phone announcements, or you know other apple events throughout the year when I'm not in California You know she's heard me talk about WDC many times and WC announcements are the ones that I like kind of lose my mind and be super excited, and like it's in a way that is unusual that it's not. As to you know with an iphone announcement because a cool new camera that's kind of clear and accessible, but like I'm losing my mind over some minor thing that they just mentioned and she has no idea and it was kind of a fun thing. I think for us to be to share that But it was definitely a bit odd to. Then just like just like. I watched the Hino, and then I go and sit at my at my regular, my regular office and I can download all the Betas, and like get started right away rather than like frantically trying to eat like an awful box lunch in between the keynote in the state of the Union and then like sometime later somehow try and get the. Betas installed over Chino potentially and not so reliable Wi fi, and so like it was definitely a very different Monday for WGC than I'm used to though I kind of liked it like it was kind of Nice I felt like I was super productive like in a very intense way which? Definitely took the weekend to recover from, but it was. It was different, but in a good way I, think is the best summary for how serve the General Rafeal if WGC was for me. The general take wagon talking to developer friends. It's like it was a more more is week easier to get information easier to manage Betas and find out what exactly what's going on. You're not kind of in the thick of it. But it was less useful of direct access to apple engineers. Maybe I'd say from my experience like they had labs this year. Which is alive that typically WGC they have these big sessions where apple engineers are available to attendees who go into, ask your questions, which is the one time of year typically where you're able to interact with an apple engineer, because typically they're locked. Locked away in Cupertino and can talk about anything related to what they're working on, but this one week they get let out in are allowed to do that. And I was very curious to see what they did for. The labs experience this year and worked well like I think I attended five or six lives, and they were just kind of like voice. Conference calls I could share I could share my screen to to the call if I had some code I needed to show them or something. I wanted them to kind of look at and by and large. That process was actually very efficient, and from the kind of likes to the way they structured. It is I mean they were available to anyone who had a pay developer account so I. Don't Know How many people that is in the world, but it is almost certainly. Probably millions if not. Like tens of millions and it was just kind of you signed up. You submitted a question, and they had of reviewed them the day before and assigned to a lab based on as like, do you? Did you actually see Mike? You had a reason a question. That's useful and. Effective to answer, and it was to the asking esque, the right lab, or the right place and feuded, both those things like I was able to get my labs, and got my questions answered, and so that was actually kind of cool. I think only part. I missed was really like. You're talking about the sexting at the the relay commune. Having that kind of that sense of community and being around other people. Like the idea. Of being on site in San Jose was something that I certainly missed this year, and that's a tricky thing to quantify 'cause i. think in most other ways. The Co like the conference was better for being virtual like the session videos were better, and they were more accessible in the sense that they are available immediately to everybody they all have full transcripts that are searchable and so are accessible, just both from an ex. A accessibility perspective of perse people for people for whom listening to video is difficult. They have the transcript immediately available, and they can do. Watch close captioning as Equally accessible to everybody irrespective, if you have the means and the resources and the ability to go to saint, say or not you just if you have an Internet connection, you have exactly the same connection, and then like all the content was super polished

Backporting

"Today's topic We're GONNA dive into a little bit of talking about back boarding Which generally is the concept of taking a particular feature or functionality in a current version typically of operating system or Nasty K- and creating that same capability in a previous or older version of this and so this is a a technique or something. You often find yourself having to do if you WANNA present a common use of user experience across different versions of platform but without piped in a way that is good for the user potentially complicated and annoying for you as a developer because rather than just degrading the experience as you go backwards in sort of age rather than I was thirteen twelve. There's a new feature niwas thirteen that you want to take advantage of you back port that into Iowa twelve by essentially recreating either. He's made subset of the functionality or a full version of the functionality. And you're kind of taking on the responsibility that the platform vendor typically would take on me by doing this so it's a tricky thing to do necessarily want do but every now and then is something that I found to be useful and essential In many ways and recently I ran into this kind of where I've kind of in my mind I'm preemptively back porting some features because as we're recording were about a month away from WGC and so in about a month we'll probably get a whole news Set of functionalities of capabilities on all the various platforms and for me specifically am expecting watch. Os Seven is going to include a you know whatever serves swift Ui version two is and likely going to include a lot of new functionalities new controls things that are kind of either missing or awkward to do currently and so. I expect that to come. But in the meantime is kind of this awkward thing of do. I want to hold off on adding features taking building my own personal controls and capabilities into the APP waiting to see what they're going to do and specifically I ran into a situation where I'm going to do a lot of mapping in watch Smith and this kind of mapping is something that is just not. There's no built in controls for this on IOS. You have map kit and even using sift y you could use map kit by wrapping it Kind of interrupt. There's you know you can wraps with you. Iq IQ controls in swift controls. You'll end up with something that is pretty reasonable But Macho S. There is no map kit. So if I want to do this to build it entirely myself And I was going down the path of like dry one. Start this project knowing that you know. Watch a seven me introduce map control like a map control force fifty. Y on watch and it'll be great in the end. I kind of sort of went on the well. Then that would only be useful to me if I had. I was able to require watch. Os seven like right away. And if I could then maybe that would be useful waiting for then. This would just be a feature that push off until September but as it is I was like A. I don't necessarily when we timber for this. I want to get it out sooner than that and then be was the reality that I feel like. We're entering this awkward period with the all of the surviving systems and platforms. Generally where we're going to have a much higher degree of sort of backwards compatibility for awhile like I feel like we've talked about. It May Times that I sort of twelve. Seems like it's going to be lingering for a long time At least an inch away that we need to be relevant and sort of keep support for and kind of feeling that watch. Os six kind of feels like it might be the same thing I wouldn't be surprised if we lose. be dropped support for this series one in two watches the FAUCI West Seven. And if that's the case then six might become kind of the new baseline that everything has to hold onto because while the one in the series went into watches aren't a dramatic to the proportion of the user base. I think it's going to be a similar story. I always twelve where it's enough that People are GonNa want to keep using those watches for a long time and so I was like well. I guess that means that I'm going to have to build this myself. Which is which is an interesting engineering challenge. But and then this funny expectation that I might be preemptively back. Porting this functionality. That sort of in watchos seven. I may completely not use this. This my version of mapping but in In whenever it anytime I in watch. Os Six land. I have to use my version of mapping and so it was just kind of interesting thing where you have these weird parallel experiences. Because I don't WanNa do necessarily is go down the path where like features just disappear when you're on one platform or another because that's as a giant support headache. Where like in the screen shot. I see this feature. Why can't I see this feature? And that's a nightmare. And so I tend to try and backboard as much as I can but the technical implementation of that is certainly not straightforward. Yeah and I think it is worth. You know. Very quickly revisiting. Why is important? You touched on these. Old Os is are sticking around. Long are longer than they used to. You know back when the platform young are the is would would move pretty quickly. People are updated pretty quickly. It was a more enthusiast base for many of our APPS and devices being replaced more often so the having to keep around an old device for a long time. was less of a concern back in the days of faster update cycles younger platforms. Much more carrier subsidizing the phone prices so pretty much. Everybody updated every two years because it made no sense not to So there you know there was all that going on and in in the modern era we have devices the stick around for a much longer time we have a much larger market which is good but in the sense that now though there's a lot more of the market that's more conservative or unable to upgrade their device very quickly and so we have you know if we want to capture decent market share or or you know we don't dawn just leave money on the table. We do have to support older os as for longer than we used to. You know my my advice for years was indies. Should never support anything anything before the current version. Because we don't have time we might as well. You know us all newest modern stuff to our advantage and just leave people who don't update in the dust and that's just become harder and harder in recent years you know. I went through the same thing myself. Where last fall overcast? I immediately required a IOS. Thirteen Within I think two weeks of being released something like that within a short time and that bit me really hard and I angered a lot of people and I had to eventually go back and re add support for Iowa's twelve And I also had acquired watch. Os Six same problem. So I had to go back and re answer for US five And I stand by those as being the right decisions like I I. I'm glad I went back and out of the support Because I needed it and now as we approached the new Os season it certainly raises the question of well. Do I move forward this year do do I this fall? Do I require Iowa's thirteen and and keep it just like one version back like that and do I require watch? Os Six And you know it. It is a really tricky thing because so often we will get awesome new. Api's that we will use. The good thing is that we are not the only like me. And Dave and you are soul theoretical listener out there. We are not the only people who are facing this problem. We're not we're not making the only apps out there where the developers want us new features but they can't for whatever reason dropped support for the US quite yet and so other people face this problem in mass and they make solutions to help with us and you know. I'm not a huge fan of using a bunch of third party code in my APP but this is one area where third party code can actually help almost always almost every year. Whatever like you know significant new. Api's are added to irs. There's usually within a couple of months a third party library that brings similar or identical functionality to the previous version of

"I like the rocket mortgage position and then the w._g._c. in memphis big winner other big winner because elephant again somehow we had rory verse brooks brooks in the final round and it just felt flat this year because it came right on the heels the open championship now. It's it's two weeks after the u._s. Open it's three weeks before the open and that's what keeps coming back to this theme with these big tournaments. Is they work best when there's a little room to breathe in between them you need that week off in between green so that's my big winner that concurrently means bad things for the european tour because who w._d._c. was has always been slotted. You know at a different time it gets moved up because of the olympics and now it is opposite the typical spot for the irish open and so when memphis wins the irish open kind of loses but only because it's being moved probably into september they're not gonna try in hosted in the middle of july before the british open which stinks because the irish scottish british is a great run up of links links season right and so now we won't have that the european tour kind. You've probably takes a little bit of an al there but if the irish open is moving september that's kind of a great time to go to ireland might have to go and hurt live yeah exactly exactly the other big winner excuse me big loser apologies to <hes> to our cube mate joshua borough but the three i'm open after a pretty eighty strong debut big-time field yeah matt wolf victory t._p._c. twin cities but this twenty twenty position dumped right after to the open right before the olympics. I don't think we're gonna see guys going going to go from the open to minneapolis to tokyo. Actually it's kind of linear but if you think about it lastly the fans one could give it up for the fans p._g._a. Tour players always think their fans whenever they do something well <hes> <hes> the fans beginning in december we will have in the span of ten months presidents cup in australia the players the masters the p._g._a. At harding park u._s. Open foot hit the open at royal st george's the olympics until you and the ryder cup at whistling straits. That's eight gigantic events. In ten months. Ban probably the most that golfers ever the hat in a ten months span and i don't know a bunch of other w._g._c.'s makes him that. I think this is the best schedule at the p._g._a. Tour could have dreamed of totally totally look. It's easiest and most fun to sort of like dump on any decision that people make in general like especially people in in authority positions since the establishment but the p._g._a. Tour is getting towards its best possible vision. It's so much better than once. Footballs are in the air. People blurred just going to be ousted as you know it it it reverts back to being more of this niche sport <hes> which is fine and great but you know if you're peaking for the tour championship into you know a lesser extent the open championship as your climax your finale you know this just makes a lot more sense in its current construction destruction so perhaps you know who's gonna be involved in the p._g._a. Tour in twenty twenty who's martin trainer. Oh he sure is let's bring him in martin trainer here in studio with us so just introduce <hes> how we've gotten to know martin a little bit we actually the two of us ran into martin through a mutual friend matt garcia zia at the maya koba classic last year in playa. Del carmen had some tacos. You know freaking amazing tacos one one thing led to another and <hes> i ended up caddying twice this summer for martin but martin is just finishing has just finished his rookie season and he's a bay area native and we just want to welcome him into the studio martin. Thanks for coming on in. I'll thank you guys happy here. See the the gulf dot com studio or what is it golf. The mag is at the magazine golf magazine slash dot com studios. That's a lengthy title and we're going to have to work on that so you caddied in divall spar kennedy in the various well. We'll get to that but yeah i wanna. I wanna kinda start at the beginning sir her of martin. How did you get onto the p._g._a. Tour because you know especially in the in the media here the people we see most that are you know seeing their their first action on tour viktorov wind morikawa matt wolf those guys are just coming straight out of college taking the tour by storm but you took a different path path in common incredible one so it all starts with my parents having sex and then shortly thereafter as born into a golfing family now well you know i sort of went through the usual path grown up became like a good high school player and then played at u._s._c. and then then i toiled around on the mini tours for a few years you know i see all these guys now. Obviously this is the year of the college golfers winning tournaments you know but i took a more traditional journeyman path. I played the latin tour for a few years. Then i played the web tour for a couple of years and finally made it up up this past season and this is perfect timing because this is literally the day that my rookie season ends. That's right now all right but let me tell tell me about exactly the moment. What was the qualification that got you from the web to the tour. What was that season like because this was last year so so it was it was a little untraditional in this way. I started the season with no status anywhere and my plan was well. You know i played the web dot com tour in two thousand seventeen. I'm gonna go back down to the latin tour because i missed dot com q-school for the twenty thousand season. I have no status nothing so so i go to latin q school and i ended up getting through them and i'm planning i even booked a bunch of flights down to latin america that i later had to cancel because ended up monday qualifying for the web dot com event in mexico and ended up winning so <unk> as one does yeah this doesn't happen the monday to the w that week does not happen that often and did that does that instantly give you status not quite right so it does give status forgives dot com and it puts me in a good position obviously to try to make it to the tour at the end end of the year so basically my world flipped upside down into my career it was i was going to have this plan of playing the land tour and then hopefully being in a good position to have an attempt to get to the web dot com tour in twenty nine thousand nine aka this year that was the plan and of course it all flipped upside down on and all of a sudden i was you know in the driver seat to get my tour card and then what did you do to actually lock down. Your tour card missed a lot of cuts after the win a lot of months of cuts even and then <hes>. I ended up winning again in missouri. I it's really inexplicable. I yeah i don't know what's going on. I don't know why i can't just finish twelfth like i have exactly zero finishes in the last year from tenth tenth to twenty fifth. That's i've never finished ten twenty fifth like is that something wrong with me like what's going on. That's crazy just in the quest for that t- twelve all right so you you obviously then qualified for the big tour the p._g._a. Tour you start out at the <hes> at the safeway and then you know just take us through at the start of your tour career those first few months what was the biggest adjustment to life on the p._g._a. Tour is there anything that was notably different from your life before i mean yes and no it's one of those things where when you first get out there you literally can't believe your eyes because you're playing the first tournament that i played in was napa burqa and phil mickelson was there and i'm just like i'm playing against phil mickelson like i'm not playing against. You know guys that i messed around on the mini tours with a bunch of years. Here's that made it up to the web dot com. You know you'd see the occasional guy on the web tour like former tour champions that are in the forty eight forty-nine category getting ready for the senior tour or you'd see some big ish names out there but this was just like this is the tournaments that they cover on t._v. You know this is the big deal and so it was kinda weird to be out there with those guys and intimidating frankly when you're a rookie going out there. It's not like it's just it's not like you're matt wolf and morocco where you're just like. Oh yeah sure i'll just win. That's fine. I've won at every level. I'll just went out here. What's the big the deal that was not my mindset at all i was i was like oh my god like am i gonna be able to compete with them like in my good enough sure. I did well on the web tour but you know oh can. I do well in the p._g._a. Tour so that was a big adjustment but once you get to the golf course it's kind of just the same thing like you're just out there playing you have an eight iron from one one sixty and you just hit it like there's no difference. It's not like it's not like you're playing the u._s. Open every week where the courses are just something you've never seen before. Boris is normal gulf. Yeah looking back at that time then you you made your first cut right made that may did yeah at the first week at napa but it seems like the first time you really played your way into like semi contention was pebble and then you got paired on the weekend with jordan spieth so then suddenly you're you're. You're on t._v. That feel like your first moment in the spotlight and and what was that like yeah. Definitely that was like who is your amateur. They report paired up with <hes> he was a gentleman from colorado okay but i think you're referring into the final round when i play with speed and jake bowen and i have a great picture of all of us standing on the eighteenth pretty sweet nice but <hes> yeah i mean talk about a distraction for your first ever you know it must be wild big tour. I was like in sixteenth place or eighteenth eighteenth place or something at pebble going into sunday like this is. This is the biggest tournament i played in so far like i just shot a great round at spyglass on saturday and i got paired with speed speed and it was the big deal for me at least for those guys. It wasn't a big deal that was like having a mediocre tournament but for me it was like like the biggest deal ever and up until that point there. They always say there's like multiple p._j. Tours because there's the guys who play the season majors and they're just on tv every round including thursday friday and those guys it's like you don't play with those guys. There's this whole other tour tour for the rookies where you don't get into anything above an average field tournament you know you're playing all the opposite field events. You're playing all the events in the fall. You're sort of playing all these events that you know. Basically you don't see those guys. I didn't see see tiger until i think <hes> bay hill i didn't i never saw him. I didn't get into tori. I didn't get into l. a. you now. I didn't get into phoenix. I mean that is lost on. I think the gulf fan because people just kind of assume the p._g._a. Tour two hundred so players they i choose wherever they go and you and a lot of people in your position can't quite choose like you have a tour card but the card only works works swipe it at certain events you know. I don't know mine was broken. It wouldn't swipe into certain events but no that's how it is when you're a rookie so you start out and it makes sense. You know there's there's more than one hundred fifty six guys playing the tour and <hes> you know. There isn't room for everyone every tournament so when you start out you don't really you don't really get to play all the biggest events you have to earn your way so the the the meritocracy accuracy doesn't just end once you get off the web tour you have to keep going and keep burning it but at pebble that was sort of the first taste of like okay. This is the tour <hes> it's sunday at pebble and i'm playing with speed and there's crowds. I mean basically didn't play in front of crowds for a few months knowns coming out at like eleven a._m. On the back nine on thursday to watch the vall spar guys play opposite field events but that was the tour for sure yeah then what did you take away from that experience. Did you learn anything from speaks just about how he deals with always being the spotlight or how he how he deals with fans and crowds crowds. It's just hard to deal with it sometimes and like obviously he's used to it because he's been spotlight for a while now but you know last summer i ended up playing with steph curry in the elliott classic on the web.

"What can we do buddy like the tour can only do anything can only act on anything that happens in its events? The European tour is the the exact same on a different continent. There's not much that can be done right yeah well. I mean it definitely makes it tricky and if you look at the you know the strange incidents that is rage has gotten him into this year you can add in that weird rules thing with he and Matt Kuchar. I've just been lightning rods this year at the at the W._G._C.. matchplay where Sergio you know hit it up to about six inches and then just basically quick swiped the ball away before coocher could give it to him again then it would not have happened if Sergio was not the way he is but he just can't get out of his own weight and I think that there is room for the P._G._A.. Tour to say look this is not acceptable. This is a pattern of behavior <hes> and tell him to take a few weeks off. I mean there's some way to get to this guy. There has to be but I don't know I mean still if you suspend him. Does that actually do anything. I don't know yeah. I think they're going to plead. It's out of our jurisdiction well. I think they have and I think they still hide behind. You know finds being private <hes> disciplined being private. I I mean I don't get to worked up about that sort of stuff but it almost doesn't matter because Sergio is losing in the Court of public opinion opinion which is far more important than any of this other stuff <hes>. That's what we are here for. That's what we're doing. We're sway not to turn look. I do think it's important to say. I don't think incidents like this. I don't think this means Sergio is a bad guy. You know late. This doesn't make him a bad person. It just means that you can't control his temper on the golf course and if that is like the criteria for being a bad guy than like tomer. We're all sorted. Were all in trouble yeah but as someone that is on the on the P._G._A.. Tour is is a role model a major champion. You know this is not some like think of the children rant but but you know it's not acceptable you just can't it doesn't work if you're messing with the Greens. If you're messing with the field of play it just everything breaks down and you cannot do it moving forward. <hes> one of the main topics news has been the P._G._A.. Tour schedule Yes new schedules announced today hot off the presses <hes> but looking back on the schedule just moved through. We saw a loaded field play they in Memphis who was it was the eighth major or W._G._C. in twenty three weeks and it felt kinda lifeless. It's so quit immediately. After the open <hes> Justin rose at the open criticized the new schedule he said it's difficult to peek at all these events that you wanna peak at <hes> and I guess that the main question is like is the schedule a good thing or what we're seeing this professional Gulf schedule is a good thing so funny. I think Justin Rose untucked Brooks Kepco because of this year we talked brooks kept and he was like looked. If you get hot for these majors you could just go win all of them and then he almost did that so I don't know about the peaking thing I mean he's not like at cross country runner. I don't really get that heating hitting adding all. I think it's a huge issue. If Justin rose cannot peak once a month for four straight months and now I know that the players comes before that and there's W._g._C.'s before and there's W._g._C.'s after but if you call yourself it professional athlete and you WanNa call yourself even an elite athlete and you cannot get yourself into competitive enough for him to win once a month for four straight months yeah. I think we're talking about a pretty big issue in the professional game look. I think this is progress. I think the schedule it was a step forward. I think not trying to compete with the N._F._l.. Come September. Is I mean so obvious. I can't believe it took this long to get there but that's massive. I think shortening the playoffs is good. I think pushing the P._G._A.. To the middle and have the having the British British the open championship being the finale. I think all that is good. It's different and I think people in Golf just hate change. I think that it's it's really as simple as that. It's different and it's also not when you look at the number of weeks just went through those twenty three three weeks. We wrought rewind it back. That starts in the beginning of March last year before this whole change twenty three weeks. You're still getting the same number of big events. It's literally just a difference of where they're placed on the map. It's different. It's really more condensed. I guess between the the start an end of the major season itself sure a little bit <hes> but that's the main difference to looking at and then I think I think people you know yearn for a little bit August major championship golf also there's a little bit. I don't there's a little element of you know. Look Golf is is a summer sport to some extent so if you don't have a major look forward to August feels like the summer's over you know I've got that sense a little bit in the Gulf World Summer's coming to an end but I don't know we'll get used to it. It's all about seating gulfs place in the greater sports atmosphere and it is fifth or sixth or seventh most important porn sport. GotTa be straight about it like we love the sport. We love the P._G._A.. Tour we love covering it but it's not as big as football and you know that football is already taking over just the talk of sports some get out of the way like we cherish Irish this news when if was first announced like why are we reacting to poorly my question for you though is like what is it due to the W._G._C.'s. I think what we saw in a lifeless. MEMPHIS event was kinda significant. I was thinking this morning who won the W._G._C.'s here well. Do you know who wanNA match play Kevin Kisner could for you who on the next the the Mexico event. Oh Gosh Yeah I couldn't remember either <hes> it wasn't rory what it was. Almost rory is some you're right he will. He lost by five to D._J.. To D._J.. Okay but exactly like if you had to name the majors and players rattling off immediately the W._G._C.'s Connie lost the shuffle. I'm kind of okay with that like if you're GONNA have this condensed schedule in which you got the players the masters the P._G._A.. The U._S. Open Berge Open and facts coupling. These are all these are all the first things you're trying to peacful uh-huh you WANNA have Arnie's event cool. You WanNa have Jackson be like not every event can believe sixth major you know not everything can be look at tennis. Even you think tennis has <hes> you know an identity Eddie problem with its seventh or eighth quote unquote major the tennis is just focused around the four slams. People know fans know when they're supposed to tune in and dial in and when they're supposed to dial out P._G.. Tour wants to have there. Oh they've oversaturated everything you know and it makes it tricky to figure out like wait. A minute Justin rose could win one point four million dollars in like Mexico at Mike Oba but then and we're supposed to care you know ten times as much that he's playing in W._G._C.. Why are we supposed to care and I think this comes back to this featured group thing where we see the stars together like all the time? There's a personal acts of mine and to grind but we see we have so much exposure. There's so much money that just the idea of strong field playing for a lot of money is not in and of itself enough to really like move the needle no. That's where we're at <hes>. The new schedule looks great you schedule. What's different includes the Olympics and so if those complaints are alive and well this year? I'm sure they'll be there next year. Anything you're excited about in this new schedule. <hes> I'm excited for my discussion with notably gay. Oh all right. You're.

"Will we don't win. We don't win as viewers. It makes the viewing experience worse worse for us because it's the the Fedex Cup standings updates all of those as much as they supported it like it. Doesn't I guess the end of the year is a little bit more exciting for fans but other than that all that money goes to like the players and I I don't care that much if the if the players make a ton of money I mean the Fedex Cup is maybe a little different because it's comical how much money they play for at the end of the year and like some of those putts for like seven eight million dollars on the eighteenth green that is frigging comical. I think but otherwise why would I care how much money the players make what I think. My point is just the tower. It's kind of a reflection on the tour like the tours managed to make this sponsor. That's basically funding the entire tour you know make them look like the bad guy. It's it's yeah it felt a lot like this thing got a hostage situation and it had to go to Memphis and I think that's where a lot of the initial resentment came from which I don't think it's fair you know I think it's it's more more than anything. It's probably Fedex like stepping up saving an event more than more than you know ripping it away from macaroni or anything like that but or ripping away from Australia or or something because I don't all the things I think we'd WanNa see like probably aren't physically or fiscally possible for a lot of reasons. We talk about on this podcast a lot but it's just to your point. It's like on paper. Everything feels great. You know it's like these. W._B._Z.'s are a perfect example of like imagine you know the pre W._d._C. World. If if someone sat down and was like what is it that you guys want to see what would make you happy make I don't know just Gimme the best players man just like just let me see those guys on cool courses and they're like okay cool here we built. We design this whole thing. It's the W._G._C.'s. What do you think no that sucks? We don't like it. I hate being that guy that just like what what's your idea. No not interested. That's just the way it started. What what's the point of calling him the W._D._C.'s not w yeah there I guess because it? Pulls players from all over the world in theory like but there were some guys in the field that I never heard of thinks that's the only thing that's world about them. Though I mean in the one that they do leave for I mean I mean at least like Mexico is still in North America with the one they do leave China and that's the worst one holiday they've done. That's the worst event on Torah well. So what do you what do you do..

Inside the Field: WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play

"So another golf tournament is in the book southbound championship Paul Casey your winter. We are now on the world golf championship. Dell technologies match-play event of what you and I have both been I'd say critical of just the format. I think the round Robin of the next three days is a complete waste of time. And they're trying to change it to include thirty two guys and the player said, nah. Let's here's something. I've gotta say about vow Spar last week. All right. The winning score was eight under par. Innisbrook Copperhead course, does not get enough credit for how awesome it is. Well, yes, and no, I think it got a little bit of do last year. Because Tigers in it. So everybody was watching it. So people that weren't familiar with the snake pit and everything goes on. You're like, oh, that's a decent little track. But yes by large. I would say you're correct. Yes. Because that golf course again is a golf course that is not huge. Now. It's not a big giant, golf, makers course, exactly. And you throw a live just a little bit of wind in there. It's not like it was blowing. Like it does at the Honda where blows thirty miles an hour. And guys just hate that golf course. This is a golf course. That guy's really like 'cause it forces you to hit golf shots, and I'll tell you you watching Paul Casey. There's a reason that guy is always in contention at the masters. Funny that you say that because there were plenty of guys Jason day who said that they were playing in his Brooke because it reminds them the most of agus, correct? So now, it just reminds them of Augusta has not even close to the speed, no or the length or even the width of Augusta. But the shot making that you have to hit their and surprising enough for Florida. Some of the elevations changes are similar. Yeah. And so in that's that's the beauty. That course in that tournament. That's why always when I'm in one of these pick 'em leagues. There's a, you know daily fantasy when you look at some of these guys for the masters, Paul Casey, no matter, what is one of my guys because the value you get outta him. But at the second shot course Innisbrook set can shot course, Augusta's a second. Shot. Course your drive is. Here's the thing about saying. It's a second shot course though Augusta. Yes. Because so I did a thing. I was asking guys. So I got seven seven guys or eight guys. And I asked them, you know, for here's your holes. Here's your holes. Here's your host. Give me the most important was the key to this whole and not one dude was like what you have to be on this side. And every guy started with you have to hit the fairway you have to hit the fairway, and I thought to myself as long as we've been hearing about how much of a second shot. Golf course Augusta is because of where you have to hit the green every guy that I spoke to which were all masters champions, every single one of them every single masters champion said the same thing you have to hit the fairway you do. But if you have any chance like you're not gonna accidents birdie a hole in Augusta, and it's not going to happen. Your second shot of where you land it because those gray. Raines I'd say maybe the eighteen holes two of them have greens where there's flat areas. Maybe. Yeah. So you have zero chance of scoring at. That course, if you don't land your second shot in the right area of the green to put yourself in a position to make the putt now Augusta's not hard to hit. If you don't hit the fairway at Augusta. You're not screwed. It's not accept on fifteen yet as one whole day. That's right fifteen. You gotta hit the right, so yeah. Because in your popping it out for to your punching up for three you're laying. You're you're giving away scoring hole or not doesn't really matter on them.

"I had I played really well for the first grounds. Unfortunately missed too many greens the last day around that Gulf horse. You can't you can't really miss do many catches up to quick yet. So he, but so in in six so you you've played at six starts you made three cuts. Yes, you've made one hundred K so far on the PGA tour. I think you made one hundred sixty K last tour. Yeah. So that's kind of gives you an idea of the of the range and difference. Just kind of I don't know. Everybody knows a lot of money professional golf, but just see in some the size of some of the paychecks that come in the guys are the guys that are doing this for the first time. This is a very serious thing. I think I saw one of your tweets right after Adam long one in Adams been a pro for five years six years. Maybe I think even longer than that. Yeah. He doubled his earnings in one week. Yeah. His career earnings eight hundred eighty five K or something through eight professional seasons. Exact and then won a million bucks. Yeah. And it's it's awesome. It's the opportunities that we have out here on the PGA tour to provide for our families. To play in front of fans the way that we do is incredible. It is. So so unique and so cool. So what's next for you? Then what are you in events? Go on are you are you the reshuffle is after Genesis after Genesis. So will you slide up again based on your finish, Tori, or you? I would hope so. Yeah, I have I really hope. So I don't know though. And that's kind of the scary thing, we're planning travel. It's like, well, we're going to Pebble Beach next week and maybe Los Angeles do the Monday qualify for Los Angeles. And then we'll get it onto Puerto Rico and After Puerto Rico I'd love to play here in Florida but same times, but this new schedule, you don't know how many guys are going to want to be playing early in Florida. If they're going to be doing prep for the players. It's coming up here in about a month. And it's coming up suit really quick we have to WGC's in the next six weeks. I think like it's packed. Yeah. Very packed early on. So I have onsite other than pebble and Puerto Rico. I don't really know all be played next. It's funny. To hear like the your excitement for WGC's, which means that there's an opposite. Yeah. I guess Puerto Rico and Dominican how do flights work. I mean, what do you like you said, you don't know what you're going to pebble? You don't have return flight booked or Joe figure that out on a expensive to fly last minute. All the time. Yes. It definitely you lose a couple hundred bucks every time I travel with my wife, I'm very thankful that she's out there with me. Now it's way more enjoyable than it was when you travel alone just by what Curtis maxima thing hanging out together every afternoon every night the. Yeah, it does get, but we have a rental car booked for Monterey to LA one way. And hopefully, we can drop it off and trade it in for courtesy card that we can stay LA and then fly from LA to San Juan Puerto Rico. We'll see God. That's amazing. All right. If we're gonna we're gonna predict the event that you have your first PGA tour win at what what would you? What would you guess the event is going to be what's golf course that you're like, okay? That one's for me. I don't know. I honestly haven't seen. I gotta tell you where I would love to win of her son bail. Okay, grew up here in Orlando. I didn't play hill. "Watching on a Sunday morning the open championship were texting me about what was happening and the only reason they were doing it was Tiger Woods? Tiger, Woods whether you like it or not brings. The casual fan he brings the fan like me. Tiger Woods brings people to the table that ordinarily aren't there who would know who Francesco Molinari is is he feared? Though I? Thought this was interesting ROY McElroy who kind of headed up and down day yesterday there was a brief time yesterday where I thought maybe he, was going to? Pass the field and and when the Clara jug he said after his round yesterday. The tiger isn't feared. Like he was in years. Past know not tiger that phil and ernie and all those guys how to deal with it's sorta different version but you know he's right there he's right there he's he's getting himself in the mix you know he looked good in in d._c. a couple of weeks he's he's looked good here i'm not sure if finish is going to get them into kern or not but you know he's he's played a full schedule he's healthy i wouldn't say we're worried about him but he's he's one of the guys that's that's always end with a shot you absolutely no he's there and by the way he did qualify for the w._g._c. bridgestone invitational inaccurate in two weeks he also moved into the fifth fiftieth in the world for the first time since january of two thousand fifteen read some of the clothes from jordan speed who had a rough day yesterday kind of look like jordan spieth was in his own head and he even said look at one point i looked up at the board and there was tiger woods and i should have done that a bear phrasing jordan speed look as a casual golf and even if you didn't watch yesterday in the kind of cool that we're talking about tiger woods being Factor in a major and. Now maybe we, can legitimately talk. About him maybe. One day winning a major perhaps as. Soon as, next month at the PGA championship the next two majors. By the way I guess. Not the next two because the PGA championship moves to may next year but. You've got the, US, open at Pebble Beach of. Course that. He owns we know how good he's, been at Augusta you just like the way he's trending you like the way he's playing. In, yesterday you. Liked the fact that he was a factor in for a few fleeting brief moments yesterday. We were allowing ourselves to think about what it would be like Tiger Woods to actually win the open championship here's Michael Collins on how it felt to actually have tiger in contention on, a Sunday in a major when tiger wasn't around golf was, good but now the, Tigers around and getting, in contented golf is great and it's a lot of fun and energies back and at one point when tiger was in the mix with Rory mcilroy, George speed if you wanna lit a match in the media center it probably would have just blown up Michael Collins on sportscenter but yeah that's an important point right and as look Tiger Woods is the guy who brought me to the sport twenty twenty one, years ago in the late nineties right, I never watch the golf tournament before I hear about this kid from Stanford winning. US amateurs he dominates the ninety seven masters I'm, hooked I'm in and it, was that way for about a decade of. Tiger was playing I was watching and if tiger was winning I was all about, at the cool thing though is you know it's Tiger Woods has become increasingly irrelevant and I, hate to say that there have been other more interesting golfers that have captured my attention I'm a big Jordan. Speech guy like ROY McElroy what I like about where we are with Tiger Woods is he's back and he's a factor and yesterday he certainly, mattered and it doesn't mean you count on them to be a. Factor look just a month ago he didn't make. The cut of the US open though that tournament was just brutal to, watch Shinnecock, but now you have a sport that is really really, healthy right now at least at the A..
