"Here and at home and across the country it's important to talk to kids about what they're hearing and seeing W. WJZY Allen spoke with Kelly Houseman a license they're pissed I think the biggest thing is for everyone to get yourself educated and informed that is first and foremost that the best thing we can do is read as much as we can about civil rights and past history so that we know and can understand marble why what's going on it's happening and then do we translate that in a way that our kids can understand or do we learn together yes definitely learning together and I think being open and honest and encouraging question asking your child what they have seen what they have heard and having our very open raw dialogue about it so you let them kind of lead right yes start with where again what they have seen what they've already heard and then you break it down on an age appropriate level thing that people express on the motion your protest campaign and this is been happening for generation this is also an opportunity to teach children no matter what their ages to base their relationship author the content of the person inside and not what they look like on the outside and reminding them that stereo types are hurtful to everyone involved do we bring this up on our own to address it yeah I think it's really important to bring it up again on an age appropriate level and this is a great time especially with school being out to review history lessons and almost look at the history class and you can relate what's going on now and explain okay this is the why in the past and that leads all the way up to now it is the perfect time to review history lesson I think some ways to help our children encourage them to come up with effective way to fight racism whether it's joining a pro tax donating to organizations trying to make changes writing letters to officials but working with your children at their age level to figure out a way that your family can help contribute to some good and change what's the age appropriate the first stage to start talking about this and addressing that yet even babies it's never too early to start the conversation about diversity you've been reading that's never too early to read you a baby so books that profile multiracial characters are next week apparent you start that even at a very young age it is licensed therapists Kelly Houseman speaking there with the W. "The bomb squad had to come out to our west Michigan recycle center this week W. WJZY Zameer explains why we've been told many times it's good to recycle but there are some things that just simply shouldn't go in the bin like civil war era explosives earlier this week the Kent County department of public works had to evacuate a recycling center in calling the state police bomb squad to deal with a live civil war cannonball Ken county officials say they're not exactly sure how it ended up at the recycling center in the meantime they remind people to follow the instructions when it comes to recycling no one was

"The country due to the pandemic sales have plummeted over the past couple of months US retail sales went down a record sixty percent from March to April W. WJZY Campbell spoke with Megan Holland spokesperson for the Michigan retailers association it's no surprise at all I mean the vast majority of retail stores are closed we have an historic unemployment and you know discuss any discretionary spending is going to take a backseat when people need essential so what do we do to try and change that because we can't let every business just go out of business right well right now the Michigan retailers association is lobbying the governor to allow stores to reopen before the crucial Memorial Day weekend so we've sent her a letter we have given her we have outlined precautions that retailers are ready to take to get back to work we believe they can get back to re opening safely for their customers and their employees or at least they should have the option to do that talk to the retailer the the restaurant association I should say and they had I guess maybe a thousand restaurants that they were aware of that are already closed more to come how many businesses do you know have close for good you know we don't have an estimate on that yet and I think it's almost too soon to tell you just heard the number that one in seven small businesses worry they won't make it I worry the longer this goes on and that number is actually low so we'll know in the next few months but I don't think it's going to be pretty I live in a small town or village actually and you know watching the store owners doing whatever they can to get people to you know don't do curbside everything hasn't been enough to keep businesses I mean can they actually work on the business.

"Find road improvements without harming local units of government or schools house speaker Lee Chatfield talked with W. WJZY op St Mary this ensures that every single penny that's paid in the pump is a penny that goes toward the road the fact is I'm trying to fix our roads here in Michigan we have to not just look at the symptoms which are the potholes we have to look at the root of the problem and that is that people are paying three taxes at the pump and only to go to roads the problem with that is for one of the only state in the country that do that and because of that nearly nine hundred million dollars is siphoned off in early and going to other areas we need to ensure that all the money goes to roads and do so well given education and increase in funding that's what our plan does as for the governor's bonding proposal listen I think we tried bonding in the past we've tried massive gas tax increases in the past both of those the governor has supported the problem is neither one of those have worked in a long term solution what we're pushing right now is a pre requisite it's a responsible plan to ensure all gas money the pump goes towards roads the governor's three a half billion dollar proposal it's a twenty five year debt but our state will have to anchor the only focuses on state road are planned well actually fix the local road the counties or cities and villages across the road in front of St Anne's more responsible way tackle I wrote how much will I pay at the pump what you paid the pump will not change as a six percent sales tax is taken away if the prompt it'll be replaced by six percent excise tax you will pay the exact amount of the pump the only difference is now every single penny at that pump will now go towards roads were doing so without adopting the governor's forty five cent gas tax increase we're doing so without getting back into the pockets of our taxpayers as for that taxes and that usually carved up by some local units of government so what we've done is this number one we're sending all the additional dollars at the pump we're sending that to local units of government so they can fix their roads however we're doing so by hold in schools harmless because we are capturing future growth government ensuring that money goes towards the runs however should funding of education ever drop below where that currently we put a trigger in there that the first money that comes in from the income tax goes to education and what we're doing is refining wrote an education first rather than being lazy and trying to raise everyone's taxes to fund road that education works is house speaker Lee Chatfield talking with W. "Forces with the county animal shelter to pair up shelter dogs with inmates it's a trial program called a new lease on life sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth talked about it with W. WJZY Fisher so it's really a partnership between the sheriff's office in the M. county animal shelter to socialize dogs that for whatever reason find themselves at the shelter the more we can socialize the dogs using similar inmates that are also pet lovers I think it's more likely that the the dogs will get adopted to a good home and it also benefits the inmate because they get to interact with the animal and you have to kind of earn your right to be able to do that so it's a it's a way to modify behavior inside of our jail as well and is the help needed at animal control it is they've got you know they've only got so much personnel over there and they tried to give as much attention to these dogs as they can but always reaching out for help and I figured all their their neighbor of ours and we're both in county government I've got plenty of people here that have idle time on their hands and in corrections that usually our biggest challenge and the more we can fill it up the better off we're going to be as well so what we have in mate's doing basically there's going to interact with them I I believe I know we've got a couple visits already and I haven't necessarily witness either one of those but they're gonna they're gonna just gonna spend half hour forty five minutes with these dogs walk and then we've got several areas in the jail that are currently closed we plan on using utilizing those areas to basically just play on a walk with the dog for a half hour forty five minutes and I'll go back to the shelter and I don't know the system that the the animal control necessarily has but we've just started this we've only done a couple visits I think we're gonna do it another couple visits today and then we'll we'll tweak the system and build on it as we go down the road and how will inmates qualified to be a part of that well it would be fun on a volunteer basis and we've got a system and internal system in place to make sure that they would have a clearance to be able to do that it has to stay away from any discipline inside of our inside of our facility and how we would be taking I guess offers of of those that want to participate in this program and how do you feel it's going to benefit the inmates and the animals well I think I talked about that earlier I would see the animals are are are begging for attention a lot of these animals have been neglected for weeks if not months or years and so they're clamoring from for some attention and the more we can get them socialized I think the more likely they are to be adopted by a good home and again the inmates on a lot of more pet lovers they're incarcerated for what for whatever violation they had missing their family missing their pets and you know it just seems like a good setup that's in county sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth talking with W.
