"An associate editor of The Washington Post and the author of many books, including clementi, the passion and grace of baseball's last hero. David, how you doing? This is great, because you're great to be with you. Hope you enjoy it since I mentioned to you in the message I sent to you. When we get to this time of year every year, I always think back to being 8 years old and hearing the news about clementi, how did you what do you remember about the time you heard about that news from December 31st, 1972? Buster, I was 23 years old. I was the weekend and night voice of wib radio reading the news at night. And as I recall, it was, I was, you know, as a holiday, of course, is New Year's Eve and so I was working that night. And I remember I was in the small office with a with a teletype machine and it started playing as it does when there's something special coming over. And so I read as the type was punching out about Clemente's death. And he was my favorite player buster. I mean, I grew up in Wisconsin. I loved Henri urin and the Milwaukee braves. Were inspired lubert, Billy bruton, but there was something about clementi that just drew me to him. Every kid I think has someone whether it's an athlete or a singer or a writer who just has a special connection for them. And for me, that was Roberto Clemente for a lot of reasons, but in any case, what I saw, you know, I was overwhelmed with grief. And I turned that grief into action. And I had a 5 minute newscast that night and I devoted the entire newscast to Roberto Clemente. So I'm sure the listeners, if they're worried, what the heck is he doing? But that's how much he meant to me. Well, I don't know if you saved a copy of what you said on air or if what you remember about that, but was it difficult to get through for you? It was difficult, you know, that was the beginning of my career as a journalist. As a journalist, you learn how to separate briefly your personal feelings for what you're doing at the moment. But yeah, as I recall, I played a Puerto Rican song. I had some what they call actuality. I guess you would know that from radio of climate talking. I recalled his 1971 World Series and then just reported what the AP had at that point about the plane crash, which was not much. And so you know it was decades and decades later when I decided to do this book that I really uncovered the tragedy needless tragedy of that plane crash. So obviously your fandom was an initial inspiration for you and doing the book. Tell me, walk me through your thought process as you decide, okay, I'm definitely doing this. Well, you know, there are a lot of fleets that I root for, whether they're Green Bay Packers or Milwaukee Brewers, you know, my teams or other players that I like, but you know I'm never going to write a book about Aaron Rodgers or Brett Favre, but I wrote a book about Vince Lombardi, because he represented so much more about the mythology of competition and success in American life. And similarly, I thought Roberto Clemente was cheered to write about the sport that I love and about a human being that I was fascinated by. But also I had some larger themes to it about the role of Latino ball players in America, the role of immigrant migrant workers in a sense. He wasn't an immigrant because Puerto Rico was part of the United States. But he was a migrant worker plight is trade. He had to overcome two prejudices of both race and language, and he was that what I would call rare athlete who was growing as a human being as his talents were somewhat diminishing. So many athletes sadly, once their athletic talents are gone, their struggles, what to do with life, and I could see clementi learning and growing as he was getting older and becoming a more powerful figure politically as a humanitarian. And as a leader of people. Yeah, when we talked to Steve last yesterday, he mentioned that he wouldn't have been surprised if Clemente wanted to be in the governor of Puerto Rico. And he spoke to exactly what you mentioned that you couldn't take your eyes off him. He said, you know, he was a guy that he said, I'm a professional player and I couldn't take my eyes off him. As you were doing your research, what were some of the stories that really took your heart as you related talk to his former teammates about that night? December 31st. Well, all of them were completely broken up. I think blasted juicy and some guys were in a New Year's Eve party. Manny said guillen was just totally crushed. He was like, Clemente's big brother. Vic power had the great Victor power another player I loved in that era was had gone to Nicaragua with Clemente previously when they were running the Puerto Rican team in the Caribbean World Series. He sort of had this haunting feeling that something horrible had going on. It was an emptiness. Orlando subpoena described how New Year's Eve in Puerto Rico is usually the most joyous raucous evening of the year. And he felt this eerie quiet, even before he knew what had happened with that plane. Clementi was, you know, he was not a safe, even though he's now sort of regarded as one. In the Spanish speaking world and it Pittsburgh. He was a beautiful agitated contradictory on settled he was proud of everything, including himself, but he had this these characteristics that were transcended most ball players. And so they were by the time of 1972, he had matured to such an extent that every player on the pirates and most of the league were in awe of climate. And so it was stunning. Here's one of the od things about it is that he was like, it was impossible to believe that he was dead. The people of Puerto Rico thought they would come walking out of the sea. They waited along the shoreline for days afterwards, just thinking they clementi would still be alive. And yet, for his short life, he was always haunted by death and a fear that he would die young and often had nightmares that he would die in a plane crash. Can you relate the conversation he had with Manny sangin about what he did after the plane crash swimming and looking for clementi? To many chlamydia was everything. He was his big brother, his soulmate, and he went, you know, while the other pirates were mourning, Manny went into action. He went out in one of the boats, and went diving looking for the body. Day after day, and it was, you know, it was just he is one of those who couldn't believe that Clement could really be gone. And so he was, you know, it was both a physical search editable search for something that was that he couldn't believe was lost. Manny was the sort of Clemente was had a hidden sense of humor and joy of life. With Manny was all right out in the open. And so he was he was a boon to Quebec as well as COVID was a big brother to him. You know, I had read in your book about how long the grief lasted among the pirate players and then to hear Steve tell that story about going to spring training and then opening day and then it's just something they relive and relive and relive and continue to add grief..
