"Three five five eight five seven six six find out more WTOP dot com Mike Morello WTOP news the W. G. a B. car review as we just want to focus on something very important during the pandemic affordability this time we try out the kia forte G. T. it's a small sedan the makes the daily commute a lot more fun he forgot Mike Pierce tells us about it this morning with a GT stands for great times for a small compact car usually when you think of the kia forte you kind of thought of like yeah it's fine basic transportation but other than that you really didn't think much of it but now for twenty twenty the GT model is a lot of fun it looks pretty good doesn't really wow you with looks but bigger wheels a little spoiler little body kit makes a look a little bit more fun and if you want a one horse power is nothing to sneeze at these days and a dual clutch automatic transmission that does lead to a little bit more fun than your usual compact sedan in this market so let's talk mileage and then let's talk price you do pretty well I did about thirty miles per gallon for my week of this little fun machine and it was a nice break to drive in the times we're living in now so it made the daily commute to still come in here a lot more fun and you know what let's price very well about twenty two thousand start twenty six thousand all the options don't add it now allows some of the stereotypes are this might be your first car or a younger person's car but I don't know you can see it maybe it before somebody will advance to still wants to have a little fun yes an advanced person like me had a lot of fun with the seats really how do you like us ports Kerr should and has that flat bottom steering wheel so it gets a little bit of a more racy appearance but it doesn't beat you up every day that maybe it's a little bit more firm than other cars in this class but it's not a bad daily commuter car at all and what are the negatives that it's not is fun looking at say maybe the Honda civic SI and you do have this weird transmission this dual clutch is very quick shifting but at lower speeds it can be a little bit strange but there is a way around it pick one with the manual transmission and you got everything that you need and so somebody blessing was hurt us review some of the really expensive cars says I can finally afford one definitely so this is a a cheap ride that gives you a longer warranty about a ten year hundred thousand mile powertrain warranty and it's not the basic you're gonna forget about driving it it does give you a little bit more than some other cars in this price range that's WTOP car guy Mike Parris well give a Dimitri see pictures of read a lot more about the kia forte G. T. at our website a click away of course search car he's listening to one of three point five that's in the W. T. O. P. dot com on April twenty fifth of the area's largest.

"Week one until five on news radio a Levin fifty W. G. O. W. all right I want to report on it the show obviously is a lot of influence far and wide and I want to continue pushing back on the centralization of decision making whether it's medicine or economics Dr catch the expert goes on but as the work force is laid off and mas our families one adult child home for that reason already in colleges close with another two young adults back home for this reason young people of indeterminate infectious status are being sent home to huddle with their families nationwide we thought about that they've closed all the school systems where children are not in danger if you're sending them home they say because they don't want them to spread the contagion to whom are they sending them home to parents and grandparents which is point for all you know you're infecting every family in the country college kids who otherwise wouldn't be home who may be the biggest carriers in yet have the least problem whether he goes on because we lack widespread testing they may be carrying the virus and transmitted to their fifty something parents and seventy or eighty something grandparents is there any clear guidelines for behavior within families what I call vertical interactive interdiction I've not seen it such is the collateral damage of this diffuse form of warfare aimed at flat in the epidemic curve generally rather than preferentially protecting the especially vulnerable I believe we may be in effectively fighting the contagion even as we're causing economic collapse there's another much overlook liability in this approach if we succeed in slowing the spread of the corona virus from torrent to trickle then when does the society wide disruption what will it be safe for healthy children and young teachers to return to school much less older teachers and teachers with chronic illnesses what will be safe for the work force to repopulate the workplace given that some are at the risk group for severe infection what would it be safe to visit loved ones in nursing homes and hospitals one once again my grandparents pick up the grand children there are many possible answers but the most likely one is we just don't know we could wait until there is an effective treatment the vaccine or transmission rates fall to undetectable levels one of those are a year or more away then we suffer the full extent of social disruption the virus my calls for all those months the cost not just in money are staggering to contemplate so what's the alternative well we can focus our resources on testing and protecting in every possible way all those people the data indicator especially vulnerable to severe infection the elderly.

"Twenty W. G. N. all right coming up on the program later this hour we are going to play our first corona virus inspired game already played half of it is called stump the shelf keep listening because we've already chosen our winner for today and when I say winter I mean you know that's a relative term here's the idea we are going to find celebrity chefs locally nationally today we're starting with our dear friend chef Mike he's the man who runs the catering at the end knighted center it's got everything you could possibly imagine he's made everything you could possibly imagine and here's the idea what we do is early on in the show we solicit for a color by number if you are that color by number you call we pick up if you thank you caller for example the nineteen call we pick up the say hello you're the nineteenth caller you win a twenty five dollar luminaries guess certificate name three items that you have in your kitchen that you would like to make for dinner and an hour later we will have our celebrity chef on to tell you exactly what that recipe should be and I will just tell you that this particular set of items for today is a little daunting because it involves creamy things and I'm not sure how this is all going to work out that's coming your way we also are going to be talking to our friend rocky work sees all of our friends he is the chairman of the Chicago Blackhawks and he injury runs or did something really amazing by deciding that we're going to pay their employees throughout all of this the trouble that we are having and and they they as it turns out are really one of the one of the organizations that is doing that and a lot of other organizations or not and that's the only problem is having the president today even acknowledged at his press conference that said there is concern about a recession that his administration is concerned about recession but once this the danger has passed everything will bounce back Susan Schmidt joins us right now from Aviva investors and the Dow seem to not like what happened yesterday where the federal reserve cut the interest rates to zero because right after that happened the overnight international trading seem to go way down and then that the Dow drops three thousand points today eight and a half percent what happens tomorrow so who knows if you remember that we've got a very volatile market right now we had a big down day last Thursday and yet Friday was up nearly ten percent now we've got Monday were down against the Michigan only we're not really sure what's going to happen tomorrow the market tailed off at the end with I think some concern from president trump's statements that can continue it might end at the earliest July or August that's a longer time frame than the market is absorbing in the market had a lot of information thrown at it over the weekend it it's trying to digest hence the big drop when it opened this morning we put out a circuit breaker you start trading halt for fifteen minutes thanks very unusual it was so the market had time to digest all that information so that's the big problem I think of a lot of us are having today this afternoon when the president did say Hey maybe August maybe July you know he always wants to make it a little bit better right he's he's he's an optimist a lot of ways so he's like saying Hey if it's August maybe July that coming September doesn't it well we're not really sure and I think that's the big thing here is by July or August does that mean that schools are still out there okay but we're not going back but he's still asking us to gather in groups of ten or less we don't know what the magnitude of that is and I think that's where investors are really struggling or seen a fall in stock prices not because the companies are that much different than where they were two weeks ago it because buyer can't figure out what the business is gonna look like or have to go through in the next six months in further stepping to the sidelines the sellers are there buyers aren't in your scene this volatility in the market as a result of that all right what are the sectors that got hit the hardest today well we thought a lot of damage across the board because now we're at the point where again people are indiscriminate in what they're selling they just don't want exposure until they can put some clarity around it I think what was interesting was you thought what went up today Clorox Krueger started the day strong American Airlines had a positive day Norwegian cruise line came up charge when we opened today so I think it's more interesting to look at those because the signs of support from the administration we saw the fed dropped a hundred basis point to one percentage taking interest rate back down to zero we need to see that kind of support coming from the administration so when you get a comment from the administration that they're backstopping the airline one of the results from that was we saw a surge in American Airlines stock price I think we're gonna get continued volatility you're gonna see some extreme Motorcraft batch it this point just repaired the people are deciding I'm in I'm out of the market they're not really making individual business decisions yet on where they want to invest and for the long term investor that's what you should be doing because here's your opportunity to actually be able to buy into some of these companies that put the long term the fabulous operators and winners in might be you know a great success story for you remember that when everyone took their money out in two thousand eight they really regretted it because when they look back later ten years forward they more than doubled if it stayed in the market and that's I think what has been a lot of investors minds right now right his friend and even busters thank you very much appreciate your time will be speaking to you I think a few times here there's a couple of weeks all right I thank you all right let's let's check in now Lauren lapkus Intel's is having on the roadways.

at this time and if you want to jump in with a tax there's or so with your terrible romantic stories three one two nine eight one seven two hundred right now I would love to welcome to the show Kurt brown holder who is that hilarious comedians appearing at zanies this weekend and and a very funny guy Kurt how are you good man Hey doing good good good I did I think you're so funny man I've been a fan for a really long time thank you man I appreciate it how does look good go back here what when did you first decide you wanted to do comedy was it something that you that used to be thought about when you were a kid the you know no I think I wanted to be marine biologist and I found out that I'm terrible at nine and so now yeah now I'm a comedian yeah okay all right so weird you grow occurred I grew up in Jersey thirty chairs baby yeah smoking when our hands because the jerseys sure of course I was we were just talking in the last second I had some gas on we were talking about smoking and and I I I I quit smoking when when the when the packets of cigarettes it turned it will cost five Bucks that was like okay I can't do this anymore I was just totally wow I was just told that fourteen dollars for a pack of cigarettes hello yeah man it is crazy I don't I don't smoke anymore yeah that that it really just waste your budget yeah I completely I was like man I five dollars and now I've got you know I don't know how people spend forty dollars on a pack of cigarettes I I just missed I mean you know I mean that's it's like close to a what is at seventy five cents a cigarette something like that I mean it's not it's just cause you wanna live man a live so let's talk about you know how you got into how you got into comedy when did that that when did that start for it I started doing comedy and upright citizens brigade in New York on Saturday yeah and then and start doing stand up in two thousand four when I started the show with Kristen Schaal and we've been running that show every Monday night for fifteen years now lay she so bony she is so funny the man yeah she's just great yeah that's that's great fifteen years so you so you started out it upright citizens brigade so you did improv first yes I started out as doing improv and got into the whole cult of improv I really I was teaching improv I just really like out all signed and like it was a church or something yeah and then I realized I need to make money but they're doing stand up yeah well all right cool so you're in town here at zanies this week and what a great room right that's great it's just like a low ceiling will small small in beautiful sorry all right you guys I apologize I'm outside a bar right now all right okay all right I think I caught it in time I think we're I think we're okay thank you yeah I think we're okay so so you started doing that you started doing the start of the improv and all that stuff and what was in the name of the movie that perfectly I made my particular made a movie about a problem right yeah it was I can't remember very good man it was a great movie and then read it reconnected I I started second city here in Chicago and that movie was about as accurate as you can you can possibly get in the war for the world of it it it's a very small world very small world exactly so you you can sort using these is tonight and that's a good one of the things I've I've actually did a little stand up and saying he's a for a couple years and the thing about that room is that it's such a great room but when you're on stage you could literally you're at the risk of kicking somebody's drink off the the state what it is yeah they're the barn that goes right over the edge of the stage and it is the first club where there is a bar on the edge of the stage and there are people break there if you like kick your foot out yeah just like kick somebody in the teeth yeah it's it's pretty pretty crazy so I this is the anti Valentine's day show Kurt and I eat it we want to hear some some of your maybe sort of your weird romantic stories and I know that you you you told a story about that how you propose to your wife in on a hot air balloon can we hear yeah yeah no I I ever I propose to my wife and I had air balloon which is a terrible idea and we like god and then she immediately Hanneke active she's scared of heights which I did not know does she had a panic attack for a full hour yeah and it is terrifying being on a hot air balloon because that is actually a basket made of turn of the century lawn furniture and then there's the flame thrower inches from your head and like a real and then also there's like a real you know like a weirdo who is in the basket with you know weirdo who is dedicated his life to hot air ballooning and they call themselves tiles even though they're just they're just just piloting something that is gonna crash eventually right and my what my my wife wouldn't even my now wife wouldn't even turn around she was so scared she was just holding on like collecting her needs like they told her that was like crash position like we haven't done it to thousands beat out of the statues that I jumped right at the end yeah and then I had to like wait until we landed to our proposed to her and then she was just so happy just to be on the ground to be online Mary Ann brown I come here you just because I'm alive all right Kerr yeah Kurt Kurt were wrong lower Ron holders with us it very funny guy and he's appearing at zanies this weekend and we're gonna talk more with him at three one two nine eight one seven two and is the phone number the anti Valentine's day show to Chicago mothers cut down before their prime the lingering impact when women are victims of gun violence in the wounds that may never heal Monday on WGN TV news at nine bills you look amazing what's the secret are you sick number three sixty smart he chooses the comfort on his side to spine we feel great can help keep you sleep senses are movements.

"Here on seven twenty W. G. and and we're gonna get back to the theme park talking crazy rides talk this program so much fun with that in the news is next from the northwestern medicine news or we do have a call here from a listener who want to comment on the the topic that we're just talking about the use of cannabis both recreationally but more importantly medically and Davis here hi Dave hi how you doing this morning okay Sir we had a I did I I I really needed to because I was never that much of a believer in using that for you know anything that doing that but couple years back my wife was diagnosed with head and neck cancer it was severe enough that she had thirteen hour surgery removed her voice box in her throat I had to sit there and take it muscle and skin tissue off of redacted formed in his throat then of course chemo and their keep him on radiation both there weren't prescribing heard thirty milligrams of oxycontin the instant kind three times a day then between that was time released more speed and with what they were given her she was sick all the time losing weight down to a hundred and fifteen pounds around there which was it was incredibly set this up there is your goal treat that we sat there in actually a family member that has mother lot have dispensary so we give it would be edibles yeah and I'll tell you what not only did she get her appetite but it does help control the pain she went down to only takes the oxycontin in the morning it didn't have to do it the rest of the day and she you know yeah better straight the stuff like that but we're really surprise me she had seven different doctors through this whole ordeal and not one of them would sit there and advocate anything that had to do with the animals or anything no medical they said we can help control the pain this way which I I yeah IT help control but she was sicker than a dog she was not sought tell you what I I I I don't know about the recreational use but as far as medically I'm all I'm all for that I I'm but I do see that up we went through that and I tell you what I I I'm a firm believer of that now big time yeah yeah is there how is your wife doing I should rewrite it that one year cancer free man yes Conrail you what it is yeah that was about a couple weeks ago we we had our our one year checkup and everything looks great and now we're looking at maybe getting to step foot in because she still can't talk about boys box yeah but I'll tell you why they even though she's going through that part right now yeah this you have your dental anything more I I still have thank god yeah I was just gonna say she still with you ma'am are that's right thank you thank you for the call thank you for the call on your best about to your wife okay thank you so much hi Dave take care about current well it's a great story great story when your cancer free god bless her all right three one two nine eight one seven two and is the phone number we're gonna get to too but we were talking about old Chicago the ridiculous concept that old Chicago was even though it ruled but I believe Chicago is a concept that could only exist in the seventies it is a part of it is a source of great memories for me though I have to say as tacky as weird as the place was full Chicago in case you don't remember was a an indoor amusement park slash mall in Bolingbrook only lasted about five years and it was kind of ill conceived and weird about I love the place and I was a kid so we're talking about that and that's that's gonna get us into well other crazy theme parks we were talking a little bit about places like adventure land Kitty land and of course the classic Riverview which is of my parents generation which was located at Belmont western which I still find astonishing but there are many pretty crazy and weird theme parks around the world the travel dot com put together an article detailing some of these and if you've traveled around me is Marcus up no the market is not listening I bet you know what I I OP is Marcus is up listening give workers you know he travels around he goes to a lot of theme park rides a lot of crazy roller coasters market so shocked by the ways we're talking about from the TV side of WGN whose great god man on the show many many times good friend he specializes in that kind of stuff and I bet he'd have some stories are some rides that that there that he did he has gone on so travel dot com says and and by the way if you've been on some insane rides and you want to describe them and if you've been to some really crazier weird theme parks from around the country around the world three one two nine eight one seven two hundred three one two nine eight one seven two hundred when you think about it every theme park is a crazy idea who would think that for entertainment human beings would want to be dropped from intense heights are flung forward it biologically impossible speeds who would think the tourist one a visit a purely artificial destination where the cultures structures in characters are entirely fictional theme parks are fundamentally ludicrous idea but evidently the appeal to a large diverse.

"Today only to daily deals register lane Adams jewelry gift of the week and zip zap stuff getting bins news and weather even happens on the weekend so that's why we do it at the top and bottom of the hour one eight ten and one oh three one W. G. Y. more handle on the law welcome to handle a lot what can I do for you hello bill is it possible for us taxpayer incident California to sue a government body this state senators office stays on which office or some one role congressman don don't see radically it is for what well they're not doing their job and they're there to help constituents and with state agencies or federal agency okay so let me ask let me ask you this so they say they're doing their job and you're suing them what is it that they didn't help you with we don't do anything they just leave John of the just lie and say yeah I'll crossing John Paul you've been ever doing them here's the problem that's that's what they do for a living his life and everybody knows that and as much as I'm joking with that why it's let's say you're suing all they didn't do their job I got your but you were out they were elected and does now what what you didn't know that you want to sue them for not doing their job and what is because they didn't call you back right there is a basis for so we know how much is that worth by the way John that dot no legislature called that legislator called you back how much is that worth well what are you supposed to sue the government agency themselves what okay so you weren't called back so what is that works well I need both be able to get help from under getting paid for something what is it what what kind of help if you been denied that you are going to sue meal sick about on and won't extend this out and start talking about this yeah well I'm trying to get people the state government agency mostly the state to do their job and how are you tell me tell me how you have been hurt because when you go into court you have to argue I've been hurt to this extent ID damages well the government workers just lighting there are okay so how we have turn saying you're not answering the question when I ask you how have you been hurt you know what they're not doing their job how have you been hurt well they're not doing their job I'm not able to make contact with the state agencies to investigate so how in what does that work you're not making a again what is it that you are complaining about that you want a state agency to contact you specifically what is the problem well for example medical on investigation by the department of public health okay well here you go okay it's not your call it's not your call what they investigate it's their call what they investigate yeah but I've found out they're not of following the rules and regulations that apply to me about the second termination you see what it was so let me ask you this do you have to give me a call you have to give me a law that they are not following yeah well you know I mean there's a lot of all in the problem I just wanted to extrapolate people say that all the time I mean the the the answer is no you can't but I just wanted to expand that a little bit hello Joe welcome to the show bill Aug the reason I'm calling is that I recently retired from the sheet metal trade off for fifteen years are with the journeymen sheet metal worker union and I contributed to the pension fund our dinner went into middle management trickle withdrawal from my card and work in that arena until recently well when I went to file for my pension I was told that I was four hours shy of qualify for any creature is so so we're we're so hang on so you were told you were turned twenty four hour shy did you just say hold off until tomorrow low are your figured that with that but I didn't qualify all you're gonna be fine you're gonna be fine it was just a mistake by one day call the pension people and go Hey I just made a mistake on the date for god's sake one day and have you asked for nor they denying it now based on that yeah all right well you have a lawsuit you have to go to your union rep yeah have you talked to talk to your union rep that yet are you tried that and you know what I would do it with maybe twenty years ago when I manage for the ways that you wait it's it's twenty years since that happened well I work on a minute how many years ago did you file for your pension or body about zero nine months ago okay so why you're entitled your pension but for one day correct they're saying I was twenty four hours short I understand all we've we've gone through that have you contacted your union rep I am in according to them the account from the international is correct and there's nothing we can do wait a minute twenty four hours short for fifteen years and there's nothing they can do they're not fighting for it no wow I gotta tell you what a union that is Han yeah I think you get an employment lawyer because that's just a twenty four hour mistake that is horrible and then you go straight up to the local president of the union and you go I need some help here I'm there's nothing legal to do I mean you got a wedding to file a lawsuit yet maybe a weekend but what lawyer is going to do it just to put your pension in place where they make money now unless there's a right action Tory provision but I I eat you have you gone up to your local all the way up to the president I've gone up to the international why not your look why not your local because those guys don't know me anymore and I don't know it doesn't matter you're still you're still a member of the union or you weren't yeah what the international knows who you are no no go to your local union president while I mean for twenty four hours at some pretty bizarre and by the way did you look at a calendar when you made that application are yet so you you just blew it by a day job pretty much right well when you were our yeah I know I get it twenty four hours yeah we can be on the phone twenty four hours right now talking about okay yeah what would you do with that one this is handle on the long.
