"Own Andrea Darla's on W C P t 8 20 Thank you so much for being with me today. Today is September 10th tomorrow, of course, September 11th 1 2020 years ago tomorrow. 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda, hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. A third plane hit the Pentagon just outside of Washington, D C and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Almost 3000 people were killed during the 9 11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U. S initiatives to combat terrorism and basically defined the presidency of George W. Bush. There are there were documentaries on all weekend long and I would highly encourage you to watch at least one of them. The History channel is going to have three documentary specials. That start tomorrow. One is on the World Trade Center. One is on the Pentagon. And then one is on Osama bin Laden. Um, very harrowing. I saw some of the, uh, the trailers for each of them. Also tonight, Diane Sawyer is going to be talking to boy. I just tear up when I step when I watched the previews of this lady, be it. It's just very harrowing, because I remember when Diane Sawyer was on the air when all this was happening 20 years ago. And I think this is something else to Diane Sawyer is going to interview tonight She's calling it the Children of 9 11. So it's women who were pregnant and these Children obviously Lived in lived. I'm using the air quotes through this through their mothers because they weren't born yet, Um, so they have no knowledge of this and I know there's a whole generation my my cousin in Chicago public school teacher and she says She's teaching kids now about 9 11 who weren't born because there's 16 17 18 years old and we're celebrating the 20th anniversary that celebrating we're Commemorating and marking the 20th anniversary of these attacks tomorrow, and I think this is This is defining for so many of us because it's one of those instances where you always remember where you were. Do you remember where you were on that? Horrible, horrible day. Where were you? I was getting ready to, um Get my kids ready for school? Yeah, I believe. And, um And then, as I was walking to, I always have the news on and I went to my living room. And I saw the news and that's it was I couldn't believe it. Almost I was I was shocked. Mhm and I was like, and when I saw the building what the first building was on fire. And then I saw the second building. The airplane, and I'm like what? Right. It's it's I don't think any of us could talk about it without just getting that just This way. A little for club. You know what I mean? It just it's hard to talk about. Even when I watch the news coverage of it now, um I just get very emotional. You know, it really does. It's something where We lived through it, You know, I would always hear my father was in the Army for six years. So my mom would always tell stories about Vietnam and you know she would. She would cry when the president would come on and call more troops up because she was afraid my dad was going to be called to go serve. He was he was at Fort Bragg. He was where he was working in an office at the time, but obviously was active military so it could have gone and she'll tell me these stories and get very choked up when she tells the stories, but I didn't live through Vietnam. I wasn't born then so I Didn't You know, it didn't hit me like 9 11 did And And that's this is a case where, Um, As I said, you know, we just we will always remember where we were. At that time I was working the I was a reporter at WGN radio. I had been there for four years. Five years at that point, going on five years at that point, and I was working the night shift to to turn So I came home by the time I finish up, Got home. Go to bed. Maybe 11 or 12 o'clock Probably closer to midnight. So it was midnight. I went to sleep in. My mom called. My parents were both always kind of news junkies. They were always watching the news. You know, they watch the 10 o'clock news with Bill Bill Kurtis and water Jacobson or carry Marina run majors, and so they were. I was living downtown in Chicago in Lakeview, Wrigleyville and my mom called and said You better wake up, She said. A plane just hit the World Trade Center. I'm here for sleep. And you know, I mean, I just couldn't believe it. And in my mind, Lady B. I thought the plane just clipped the World Trade Center. You know, she said, no. No turn on the television. The plane is in the World Trade Center, and I couldn't even comprehend it. So I put it on. And as I'm watching, watching, watching, I saw the second plane hit and you just get this sickening feeling like what is happening? What is this? What is going on? We didn't know terrorism or even anything like this could happen here. At least I didn't write and I called my boss at the time of W. G, and his name was Tom Peterson. He was our news director, longtime news director there in morning anchor. And I said, You need me to come in and before I could even get the words that he said get in here now, and it was all hands on deck. So I drove. I had two roommates at the time I said in my one room and can you drive me down into the city? She said. Yeah, yeah, as we're driving, everybody was leaving the city. And as soon as I pulled in and got into our newsroom there, the first tower collapsed, and it was just nonstop news coverage. All day long all day long. I don't think we went home for 24 hours, at least and then I mean, I'm sure it was this way for you to you couldn't stop watching. I couldn't stop. It was just Uh, I was. I still like I can see it. I'm like I'm there and I was in my kids was like Mom. Let's go. It's like, Look. Yeah. It was I Did your so your kids? How old were your Children? At that point point? Um My twins were in seventh grade. Okay, So that's that's still young enough young enough to be a kid, But you know, and then you have to explain to them what's happening happening exactly. Exactly. So some of my co workers at the time were bringing their Children were young, too. And they were bringing them into our newsroom. And I remember my friend Judy Judy pilot who was reported there for 30 years at WGN. She brought her son and he was three years old, and we set up a little area for him to color, you know. Because she Was supposed to be off that day. She brought her son into work, and all the kids who were coming in of the parents were against 2001. So there wasn't really like day care at work or anything like that. Or you couldn't live the option to stay home. So she brought him in. And he was coloring on the floor with all of his coloring books. And to this day, I always ask her this time of year because his birthday is right around this time, too, And I always say, what does he remember Because he was three years old, and she said he just remembers at the time. Something bad happened. You know, he can't put his finger on it. He couldn't pinpoint it, but he knew that something bad. Had happened. Um, so for those of you who have Children or if your teachers I commend you for explaining and really trying to put a perspective on this and and how horrendous it was. I know some of your calls are coming through. I want to get a couple calls here before we have to go to the break. Roosevelt. My body in Chicago was calling Hi, Roosevelt. Thank you for the call. Parallel. Andrea. Hi, my friend. How are you? How's it going? Hey, listen, You brought a lot of memories back. Yes. You brought a the mayor? The mayor, the USA Mayor? Yes. Players that are coming out now. Yeah. And speaking of that mayor, he did a rotten job. Yeah. Afterwards. Mm. Because I distinctly remember firefighters putting a video saying that it didn't help him as far as getting up. You know, uh, getting a attention after all that fumes and all those You know all that powder and all that stuff, So you know, that's one subject I wanted to touch. Another one is another. Another one is who the president. One was at the time. That is key, because because 15..

Dallas is a good team if you looked at it, everybody saying Okay, Tampa, Dallas and Carolina We're going to be locked into three of the playoff positions other the four that are there, so that leaves everybody else up in there. I'm hoping it's not folks who are using guns to assume people's vehicles and people who are being violent in these situations and, ah, multiple offenders and that sort of thing but disturbing to hear it. I don't know if you heard it when all the men, Riley said it someone else said it on Friday on the show when we talked about Carjacking that the The courts and the prosecutor's office chose not to attend this all hands on deck. Kind of look. Yeah, I mean, what do you make of that? It's just it's Pete. Be, but let's be realistic. How could she send a representative? And that representative would sit there and try to explain why they're not prosecuting. Why they're not prosecuting shoplifters. Why they're they're not prosecuting looters. Now we're upto why? They're not prosecuting carjackers all but they're gonna prosecute the four kids that shot that poor fire Lieutenant that had that nice, shiny red jeep was buying popcorn. But they're gonna prosecute him because they killed him. But for anybody else, they just pointed a gun Answer. I don't know. You have been on the other side of the gun. It's a terrifying thing you've seen. I have not. And I haven't have you. Well, hell, yeah, And one time we got shot it on a Saturday night with the guy with the MC time with the 30 round clip And on the following Monday and what we're around the Sullivan High school and that same 15 year old kid is walking out of the high school. We arrested him Saturday night. He was back in school on Monday, and he shot at eight police officers. So that sort of thing is not necessarily knew. It just seems you're seeing it more and more is that point, But, yeah, now it's because of the car jacking it Z, you know? Get this joy writing and forget that they're selling these cars for parts. They're using these cars for other trains. They're getting one car. Then they're jumping into another car to throw the police off. And then they're doing dried buys or they're doing robberies or they're doing whatever or they're using them for whatever you know. You gotta give him credit. They're only still and I don't stealing high end cars so least they want to drive around in class. But if you're 12 13 14 15 and you do this and you're caught and you have a gun. There's no way it's a slap on the wrist of go watch a Looney Tunes cartoon and we'll let you go. Yeah. We're going to leave it there. Sergeant Pete. Thank you for calling in because I just heard about the helicopters being used in the new resource is and the issues there and I thought, Well, we got to hear from you on that It's It's just always good to get your perspective. Thanks. You're welcome. You can enjoy the snow or you're gonna go out and play in it. You're gonna stay at home. Gonna have so much fun suddenly needed to know. "4 to 1 30 to 20 or visit w g and heating guy dot com. You're listening to Chicago's afternoon news here on 7 20. W G. N and the stakes are on Michelle Dip ready. Michelle. Welcome. Thank you. Thanks for having me Michelle, Of course, is the force behind Jean and Georgiadis here in the River North neighborhood, and it looks like you've got some good news coming your way. Looks like it. We We really like to we heard today. So we're super hopes for tomorrow. Tell me had now you find you find out about all this the same time the rest of us do. I mean, for the most part, Yes, there's a little bit of, you know, talk that kind of moves to the pipeline after a conversation sort of at those tables happen, and people kind of say, I heard this. Don't say anything This may be happening. So you get you get an idea, but again with things moving and changing so quickly until it's really announced officially, we don't we don't really put eggs in that basket. Okay, So what are we expecting to be announced? So what was announced today was essentially that if Chicago as I think I believe we are region 11 if we continue in the same direction with the same metrics that we've been hitting that indoor dining will open in the city of Chicago tomorrow with either 25% occupancy or 25 per room, whichever is smaller Oprah Room. So if you're a multi room restaurant, you could have several rooms up and running with 25 people. I think that I think the key was interpreting. That is if your overall capacity is less than, say, putting 25 in each room that you need to air on the side of caution and go with the capacity like, for example, 25% gives us about 55 or so covers. If we did 25 per room, we'd be over that so we air on the side of caution and start a little smaller. You have to have reservations because I remember that being an issue in the summer Yes, Part of this new opening includes reservations being required, and a two hour table women s. Oh, definitely. Reservations are for sure Required and also appreciated because so many restaurants with operating with less tables, for example, with us in our outdoor structure the last several months we only have eight tables, so it's really hard to accommodate a walk in because those tables sell out quickly and its zest unfortunate that we, You know, we can't accommodate those walk ins because we try to honor the reservations. Obviously. Safety as much as you know the enjoyment of the of the customer, Michelle. No matter every time I go out for dinner, if it's just with my wife with it's another couple with its three other couples. I'm the first one standing at the end of the dinner, saying, Okay, it's time to go. You know, so we appreciate you That's really nice. We always love when people at here kindly to that table limit. It really is so we can accommodate the most people. You know when you have less tables, how often you turn them really impact your bottom line. It is. My favorite thing is when there's a my favorite thing themselves when there's a waiting line because then I can use it as an excuse. But when you said when you said there's a two hour limit, how what percentage of your customers stay two hours or more? Well prior to Cove it we were well known for slow dining, So the majority of our regulars sometimes had tables for three hours. Plus, this was a bit of a transition for some of those longer time customers. And so it was definitely by the time we reach the end of summer, they kind of got it. So we're in a good place now with that, Okay, So are you taking reservations today? For tomorrow night on the plan that you're gonna be open. We're not. We tried. So we follow every guideline and we adhere to all of the medications and we're not going to change course with that narrow with respect to the fact that the governor did say he wants to announce and confirm tomorrow. We're not open for reservations yet. We just wanna be sure. All right. So do you think you made it through? Have you been doing You know, for the shape we're in. Thank goodness we're in pretty good shape. We have a great team. We have really loyal customers. So with eight tables outside the last several months and you know, combined with delivery and take out, it's certainly not a profitable experience that we've had. But we've been able to tread water, and that's really what's been kind of the priority is just surviving to the back side of this So far we're doing okay. Let me tell you, we're all getting hungry. So if you can keep your head above water once it's time will be there. It's definitely my intention of this is our 80th year. We wanted to make it here. We're here. We want to celebrate that. Obviously safely on bond, you know, have another 80 in our future. So our intention is to keep fighting every day. Michelle Dip ready from Jean and Georgia. He's good luck. Thank you. Appreciate you joining us, You bet. Okay. This is the time of the day when we checked the temperature In the newsroom and elsewhere. It's brought to us by American weather makers heating and cooling. They are the 60 minute man will take a look at some of the stories that are hot, red,.

"W g and R Quick the name Ada s McKinley. Do you know who she was? The name is familiar, but maybe you don't know the story. Jamal Malone is on the phone line. He's the CEO of eight s. McKinley community Services, Jamal, thanks for talking to us today. See you. Thank you for having me. It's a fantastic well, it's a sad story in many ways, but a fantastic one. A zwelithini s McKinley founded a Southside settlement house in 1919. Here we are talking about Um, you know, we're living through this pandemic. She helped people through the last pandemic. Absolutely. And, you know, this is the opportunity for us. The correct a tragic historic oversight. So thank you. And thank you for the media for helping us get this message across. Yeah. Tell me about her. How she got started who She was. So a to Sofia McKinley migrated from Texas to Chicago and in 1919, right in the middle of the Spanish flu in the face of World War one and with an emphasis on helping and particular African American men and their families migrating from the south to Chicago, she founded the Southside Settlement House. And as you may be aware, other well known folks like Jane Adams, who started Whole House and other organizations like that these Locations where it started for community service and human service works. And these were the first ones at this time. So, but Jane Jane Adams is a Chicago celebrity a star aid as McKinley sounds like she was doing the same work and she's not And we're thankful for professors Lee and Dieter, who spent three years going from research to help supplement our historic archives and what they discovered in their research, which we already New is that mainly due to media at the time and Chicago being such a segregated place at that time, and even still so today? The media really honed in on the work of Jane Adams even know what they did was parallel, and it asked. McKinley's was more everlasting and specifically when you look at the contributions that 80 Sofia McKinley made it just was not written in the history books. There were no major streets named after her and even media reports or publicity was very limited Their African American women at that time mothers the story I was reading. I'm sure you're familiar with it, but Um, where she was marching arm in arm with Jane Adams after the race rights right to try to bring calm and restore order and things like that she's leading this march with Jane Adams. And in the newspaper. They identify Jane Adams and they see walking with black woman. They don't even put her name in the paper. And so when you look at some of the reports, you know, so I mentioned her name. Some didn't some mentioned Jane Adams. What? They all mentioned Jane Adams and Whole House and gave her that high level of standing. Jane Adams taking the lead on that, But really, when you're walking through an African American community neighborhoods? Yes, it was Jane Adams when she was arm in arm with Anna Sophia McKinley. And that's an example of the media at the time really honing in on Caucasian females, even though they were African American females doing the exact Same work. You know, I talked to a novelist. A few years ago, a guy named Kazuo Ishiguro and he opened my eyes to something it distance. Impossible me, But he said, you know, we write our own stories. You know, you tend to think history is what it is, and we learned the facts of it, but actually, we end up writing our own stories in one way or another, And the story we've written about these aid institutions in Chicago are about giant Jane Adams. And not about eight as McKinley. We've written our own story. We've left an important part out of it. You know it, really thanks to understand what we do today and in the complex work for 102 years that we've performed when you look at just the facts.

"The championship. Always available online or your mobile device visit. Bet online dot net today bring the game home at bet online dot Yet it's 9 12 1, W. G and John Williams here, So another good morning to you. It was a pretty sunrise downtown Chicago. I don't know what you saw where you saw it kind of cloudy skies throughout the area, But it was one of those mornings where the sun is kind of cutting through the clouds. And so you had Some pink and some orange and some blue and some gray kind of a pastel morning in the city today was just lovely. Now we got a bunch of crap coming our way. There's the glass is half empty speed jokes that about 30 minutes. Little speed through a bunch of new funnies. Remember, Send your best jokes to John Williams, WGN radio dot com a matter myself that last week Earlier this week when Dave Drucker was on we were talking about getting your driver's license. You know if your license is expired, it's still good until the first of June because they closed down the office is due to the pandemic. So even though elapsed and you couldn't go in, Don't worry. You're good until June 1st. I didn't ask him about the your license plates. Stick her. What about that will resolve that in about 25 minutes. Don't know what it says on the back of your vehicle. But do you get a grace period on that? You know the answer to that. I don't I just got mine. How did you do that in the mail? Yeah, well, that's the thing. That's how we usually do it, too, But some people don't And so they just say we'll just do it online, I think is That all that sufficient. The other thing was, what if your license has expired and you want to buy alcohol Say you're still getting carded. This would be a fiction for me. But suppose for you, they say, can I see your driver's license and it's lapsed. Is that still works? Somebody told me. No. Somebody told me. Yes. I mean, I haven't had a problem. Mind's been expired since March. Really? Yeah, because my sure thing you just got through the door march the pandemic. It's exactly does that make you nervous? Look into that all the time feeling like it's incomplete? Well, what's worse is my nanny arrived in January, and they gave her 90 days to get her like driver's license. But because she has an international license, it was okay. But now it's it's been a year. That she's been here and she hasn't been able to go get anything Renewed. Can she drive she can because she has the international license, But I believe because of the pandemic, they just extended all these different No guidelines. So now she's gonna be here for another six months. And even at that point, I don't even think it's e don't even think it's gonna work for her to get it. You know renewed. What's the point? What's the point? We'll catch up on some of these issues for you in about 30 minutes. If if you just landed from another planet, and you say, Hey, I'm listening to this radio station. You guys are not talking about the fact that you just impeached your president for the second time. And by a wider margin more Opposition party votes crossed in this impeachment than in any impeachment ever eyes because that's all we've been talking about. So if once in a while we take a break from that, don't think that a they are following it in the newsroom and b we will not get to that in just a little bit. We'll be talking on and off about that during the show today, I will tell you this, that the thing that Continues to disturb me. The most isn't the comparison between what happened in the summer in the cities and last Wednesday in the capital. I think those air tangerines and oranges similar but not the same. And it's not what the president has been saying or doing. He got impeached. The thing that bothers me the most And the longer the time lapses. It doesn't get thinner. I think it gets thicker. I think we get more upset is the videos of the violence that was rained on the police. Those officers were there trying to protect the building of the people inside. And the citizens that were throwing flagpoles it them beating one officer with an American flag, killing one with a fire extinguisher. The more I see and think about that the angrier I get Mitch McConnell says that this impeachment process can't happen before the new president gets put into office. I don't see what the rush is. The outgoing president will deserve every opportunity to defend himself, so he gets to find his attorneys and mount a defense. I don't see what the hurry is on the second impeachment, though Nobody wants it to linger. I don't think it will have to take a long time. Very interesting story in the news yesterday, and I wanted to just get to it about If you are exercising, why don't you lose weight? Did you see this story? And if you missed it a valuable little factoid for you coming up after this? By the way, that that better. L said, Hey, John, you gotta play Betfair. Let's bet fair.
