Seattle's Bop Street Records to close after 36 years

"Eight a beloved Ballard institution it looks like is is coming to a close yeah so the Seattle times I think the stranger my Ballard all reported around the same time I think that the bop street records one of the finest used record stores in the country in fact I think according to the the the Seattle times the Wall Street journal named it one of the five best record stores in America wow about five years ago or six years ago wow it is a phenomenal record store everything you've never heard of everything you have heard of is in this place I've sold them records and and I'm not a big collector but I ended up catching someone else's collection for for cheap aha is moving away and I there's all kinds of stuff in there I didn't know about it I took it in there and the like and I actually ended up like paying my rent no one because I was broke at paying my rent one month selling off section that which I'm sure helped pay their rent yeah because I probably was I had no idea what some of the stuff was worth it and they seem very excited and so you know I I made a deal but but it's owned by a guy named Dave forty Voorhees and Davis owned it gosh since that since nineteen seventy nine and he is known all over the country by by the vinyl heads who look out weird and rare and unusual and he knows his knowledge his encyclopedic knowledge of what was pressed when what is what is really kind of legendary so what he is going to do it's just it's become too difficult to stay in business he was actually thinking of retiring in five years he decided to move ahead to now nobody's going to do is sell records online he feels like he can move through his collection buying and selling like that pretty effectively because a lot of his customers were from out of town anyway a lot of people would fly no two who flew into town well just to go to that was that this way it back in the day when I was still very H. S. tapes the way scarecrow video I was just gonna say reminds me and one person we talked about earlier Quentin Tarantino was a fan of scarecrow and used to go there and like you know poke around in there because they had unusual stuff this has the same reputation among the vinyl heads and it's not only another good old record store going away which is lousy in another bit of Seattle history going way which is lousy when the city talks a lot when the city leaders talk a lot about preserving local business this is actually what I'm talking about right I am bothered by the what school it trust me folks this is what's gonna happen the Showbox is going to close that building is going to get sold it's going away they're not another not another thing is in my years now and there's another show box just south of there that none of us like as much but this place when we talked once before about new Moston chop suey in Capitol Hill both of which are facing serious financial difficulties right now and are also on the ropes these are the kind of small places that I actually think or even more about a city's culture the niece places where you go in and you find like minded people who have in there and you find a culture you don't just find a record and that's the kind of stuff that really in riches and everything all of you know the comic bookstores the places of the some of the used bookstores the left bank books to her you know the weird places in town like those are the things that you remember when you go back home wherever you're from or when you get to settle you feel like that's why I moved here yeah and and those are the places I think even more than the larger music venues which of course we love but I think that these places add are so specific and so intimate in the in your in your reaction to them if you're enthusiast that really really starts moving the city toward the great bland middle and that is real yeah verdict on it with our architecture yeah we've done it with a lot of our dining yes it's a shame to have it done for music

"Forty dollars a day for that one so anyway after. That was flowing because they said okay. Now we're going to do your scene and they set up all these little fake beach houses right down on a beach where. I still walked my dogs. You know five minute ride from my house so I was just out on that beach today. Running Saint Bernard but niece mounted dog and the two dogs down there right where he died in a. They set up these little beach houses. If you remember the movie and they're all fake it look and so you're on the other side with a shark goes under the bridge. It's called the town plus bridge. That's where they fill my saying and when they were filming it it's in May if you know New England here at all. I don't like going in that water till I July or August even because it's cold waters may as like just sner it takes forever for this water warm up so basically they're like okay. They got down on the beach and they said you know we're going to ask you go in the water and I still got the question now. People like how are you afraid of the shark it now? I was afraid to go in that freezing cold water because that water. It's cold that time of the show. We get down there and didn't know how they were going to do all this and they basically feel you know k. You'RE GONNA ask you a month. We go back in the water them beggar. And then if you remember I say can I go back in the water and she let me looking and it's all your hands are prone. I kind beggar please. And she finally lets me go in and when they were filming though they said okay cut after I said can go in and she says go ahead a little longer. It's a cut and then they filled you in on what they were GONNA do. They said okay. Here's a raft and you're in shorts. That's air was cold. The water was freezing. You'RE GONNA swim out like Oh maybe a hundred yards and we have this machine and it was all the size of a trash can the top of it and it was like a big blundell and they said you swim out to this thing here. You couldn't really see upon this short because it's like right of the top of the water and you get a swimmer wrapped out to it. Then we'll say cut and this thing that I was swimming out full of blood that was going to blow way up in the air. You remember blood flying everywhere and so I started swimming out and then I get out near this thing. They cut and then they had another rapper. That was cut in half and they put it on top of this thing full of blood and then they were like okay. Now we're going to ask you to lie on top of this and then we'll say role and Spielberg and you know. It's one of his first movie so he he was trying to do everything by the book. You one little thing wrong. It was called and they tried it again. And so the goes now that you're lying on top of this thing and when it explodes going to water and standard as long as you can and now you're saying to yourself twelve years old freezing cold in the water when this thing blows up blood. Go underwater standard. It's like Oh no here. We go okay. So I wasn't afraid of a shortcoming trade blood glowing up's going underwater freezing. My you know what often so basically you know. You don't hear filming it but online. They're a little nervous with even hearing in the background. And then all of a sudden swim out lying on top of this. He says role. And then oh a minute later awesome. Bam GLOWS UP? Glud is slide way up in the air. You know it's your heads line up at the glowing up till hard and then it's like okay. I gotta go. Underwater went under holding onto this machine onto. They're trying to stay under long as I could. And then after that part I came up swam ashore quickly and you walk. It wasn't that deep pan. Freezing cold I go hope we all done. Now it's like they give you a towel and they were like. Oh Bad News Spielberg like you. Leg was out of the water We gotta have to do it again. And so I gotta speaking parts so they had these little dressing rooms. Anyone screen actors guild. It's a jar and then they they make sure you're treated right so messed up on the first one and it would take seven seven and a half hours for all. The blood declare out of the water before they could do it again. So all my friends a freezing cold out there as I messed up and I go two nights one dressing room sip back for a few hours and wait for the blood declare and then they would try it again and then the next time all your leg was out your arm was out and you know. The movie was just costing them a lot more than they expected. Just like this little scene that you saw me that chokes five days then. Kaz arm was out leg without it now like stay under longer and then finally when the fifth day came and they said this time we got two guys at wetsuits. And they're gonNA when that thing blows up making be underwater with their tanks and they're gonNA lift you up and down a few times. Pull you under and give you air. So it's like okay. See a lion on it this time. Blood flying everywhere you use of add. It's cold water. That's no big but this I also remember the movie. See me going up and down. The Shark cavs to guys that wetsuits holding onto one leg each lifted me up and down and then they pull you under water and give you an air hose and you just breathing air with which is fun. You know. They're right there with you and so there it was. He finally got done five days and then we went ashore but the rest of the movie they filmed down there and they would have little scenes where I think where they say they had a shark hanging up. And they they said we're GONNA cut open the sharp we got it and they said no. We don't want to spill out all docking. You know we're not in the movie them but you go over there and be watching it and this that time of the year. You don't get sharks around here too much. So they ended up shipping. That thing was hanging up in the movie there from Florida back. Then they don't just put it on a plane on frozen ice and they put in the back of a truck and drove up with that thing. And it stunk. So bad when they were filming down there so you know we'll walk in on the watch. Some of it a mile away you could smell that shark and it was like oh. They just caught the shark. No that was a nasty Ron shacking hacking up. There and the kidney boy didn't spill out. How is watching it? Well I guess I was shocked. Shocked me I was still there but you know that part and there was lots of other little things that were fun. Because you're a little kid and you know Richard Dreyfuss Robert Shaw Roy Snyder. They were all really night while not one of them wasn't really nice. 'cause they would have cookouts and baseball games itself because Spielberg with this and it's a little island. They got all these kids at people in it so they would have like these little coquelles and baseball games. You get Richard Dreyfuss out there. You know he was a great guy he talking to you. Don't whatever and then one time you know down the baseball game. It's like two in the afternoon where little kids it's like. Oh there he is. That's Robert Shar over there and like ego run over the him and he was just like in the movie. Because you get over there and it's like how's it going and you could tell you got a couple of drinks at a mall ready. In the afternoon he saw him just like in the movie. It's like you're asking how he's doing he's like get away from me a little blank blank. That's S. H. He saw the movie but that was a real life and we knew that kind.

Why Are We Afraid of Friday the 13th?

"In order to organize time. Human beings created calendars as part of today's dominant calendar system. Every year is divided into twelve periods called months consisting of roughly thirty days. Each all days are also grouped in two sets of seven called weeks and in Europe and the Americas a significant chunk of the population suspects. That bad things will happen whenever the Thirteenth Day of a month occurs on the day of the week called Friday like many human beliefs the fear of the number thirteen which is try skied. Deca phobia or of Friday. The thirteenth known as Paris. Kevi DECA try. A phobia isn't exactly grounded in scientific logic but the really strange thing is that most people who believe the day is unlucky. Offered no explanation at all. Logical order illogical as with superstitions people fear Friday the thirteenth for. Its own sake without any need for background information. The superstition does have deep compelling roots though and those origins help explain why the belief is so widespread. Today the fear of Friday the thirteenth stems from two separate fears the fear of the number thirteen and the fear of Friday's both have deep roots in western culture and most notably in Christian Theology. The number thirteen significant therein. Because it's the number of people who were present at the Last Supper Jesus and his Twelve Apostles Judas. The WHO betrayed Jesus was the thirteenth member of the Party to arrive. Friday has had a negative connotation because Jesus was crucified on a Friday additionally theologians hold that Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden fruit on a Friday and the great flood began on a Friday in the past. Some Christians would avoid beginning any new project trip on a Friday fearing that they would be doomed from the start. Sailors were particularly superstitious in this regard often refusing to ship out on a Friday and supposedly President Franklin D Roosevelt was among these ranks. Some historians suggest that the Christian distrust of Friday's is actually linked to the early Catholic churches overall suppression of Pagan Religions and of women in the Roman calendar Friday was devoted to Venus the goddess of love when the norse adapted the calendar. They named the day after Frig or Freya North goddesses connected to love and sex. The story goes that both of these strong female figures once posed a threat to male dominated Christianity. So the Christian church vilified the day named after them. This characterization may also have played a part in the fear of the number thirteen. It was said that frank would often join a coven of witches normally a group of twelve bringing the total to thirteen. This idea may have originated with the Christian church itself. It's impossible to verify the exact origins of most folklore. A similar Christian legend holds thirteen is unholy because it signifies the gathering of twelve witches and the devil. The number thirteen could have been considered pagan because there are thirteen months in the pagan lunar calendar the lunar calendar also corresponds to the human menstrual cycle connecting the number again to women but there are other traditions linked the number thirteen and Friday the thirteenth to unlucky nece in Norse mythology. The beloved hero Balder was killed at a banquet. By the mischievous God Loki. Who crashed the Party of twelve bringing the group to thirteen this story as well as the story of the last supper led to one of the most entrenched thirteen related beliefs. That you should never sit down to a meal in a group of thirteen. Another significant piece of legend is a particularly bad Friday the thirteenth that occurred in the Middle Ages on a Friday the thirteenth in thirteen o six King Philip of France arrested some of the revered knights templar and began torturing them marking the occasion as a day of evil both Friday and the number thirteen were once closely associated with capital punishment in British tradition. Friday was the conventional day for public hangings and there were supposedly thirteen steps leading up to the news. They're rumors of a secret society starting in the late eighteen. Hundreds at William and Mary called Thirteen's said to be groups of thirteen students. Who would meet in defiance of the superstition? The date was first enshrined in pop culture in Nineteen O seven when one Thomas Lawson wrote a novel called Friday thirteenth about a stockbroker who purposefully crashes the stock market on that day around the same time. Skyscrapers going up would often omit thirteenth floor. A practice that continues today. People Point to the trials and tribulations faced by the astronauts of the Apollo Thirteen Mission. And of course the wildly popular Friday the thirteenth horror franchise about sometimes villain Jason Voorhees and Camp Crystal Lake further spread. This ancient meam ultimately the complex folklore of Friday. The thirteenth doesn't have much to do with people's fears today. The fear has much more to do with personal experience. People learned at a young age that Friday the thirteenth is supposed to be unlucky for whatever reason and then they look for evidence that the legend is true. Evidence isn't hard to come by. Of course if you get in a car wreck on one Friday the thirteenth or lose your wallet or even Spill Your Coffee. That day will probably stay with you but if you think about it bad things begin. Small happen all the time. You're looking for bad luck. On Friday the Thirteenth. You'll probably find it

Catalyst Apps on the Mac, with John Voorhees

"Welcome to another episode of the Mac power users. I'm David sparks joined by my fellow Co host. Mr Stephen Hackett. How're you doing today's Stephen? I'm David how are you good. I'm doing great We're talking today about Catalina. And specifically capitalist APPs so we thought we'd have the Internet's favorite catalyst expert on the show John for he's welcome to the show. Thank you very much for having me guys. I guess I'm the favourite and maybe the the only I don't know I appreciate introduction. It's great to be here while you really took the beloit horns Mac stories when apple released east this this concept of Hey. Let's get IPAD APPS over on the MAC and and honestly. I was more optimistic about it when it started than we've had up until now we're GonNa talk about that during the show but there has been a steady diet of new APPs coming out that are built around catalyst since you've spent so much time covering it. I really appreciate you come on the show and sharing some of your wisdom assure thing before we get started go ahead and sign up for that. NPR newsletter. If you haven't already will put a Lincoln this show nuts. Lots of people are liking that. Get all the links from the episode and the information on the episode comes out the same daisy episodes Kinda Nice. Have that in your inbox John. I mentioned briefly. You're working over Max stories but you do you do a lot of things or stories a yeah. I've got a few different roles over there. I mean obviously I'm writing day in and day out with Federico and Ryan I also do a podcast with Federico called APP stories. So one of the things we've done a couple of times now is talk about catalysts lists catalyst APPs on that show And you know we we run club back stories. Which is our membership program as a subscription service service for people who aren't even more of the stuff we do so yep I keep myself busy with all those things John also is a rescue person so so when we were all at maxine together this summer and my flight on the way home got cancelled after it got delayed delayed delayed delayed and so I had to call John like hey? I don't have any clothes or anything. Saw The suitcases gone but I'm still in Chicago. Can I stay with you a night. And you're very gracious assist host me For extra night in your home and so you know. I'm not saying that anyone who get stuck in Chicago. You would rescue but rescued me in a lot. Well it was. It was a lot of fun and you know it's a little bit our houses kind of a relay. FM Halfway House in that sentence you get stuck in Chicago. You know you don't know where to go you're on the the street you can. You can stop by my house. That's that's fair. Well that's that's good. No Chicago a lot so I'll definitely show up up one day with my luggage. Sounds good. Maybe you'll be next David. But you know we talked about catalyst when we did the Catalina show and first of all why on earth did they name a catalyst the same year they're releasing an operating system called Catalina. Why did they do that to us? Guys it's really hard. I know that when I wrote my Catalina Review on Max Stories I wrote catalyst and Catalina interchangeably so many times and I was sure there was going to be a mistake in the final draft but Yes it's very hard to keep the two straight apple did They've sort of shifted their language. They call it Mac catalyst now. I wonder if it's because of this confusion by. Yeah I could definitely see that being the case because it is a little hard to keep them straighten your head. But Catalina Z.. Operating system and catalyst is the technology I guess and and what does the technology do for the folks that that aren't up on this. Yeah so you know Mac. APPS are built with something called APP kit which is a set of frameworks for building Mac APPs and when IOS debuted eleven years ago now it was based at its core on Os is ten now Mac os and but but over the year. The years those things grew apart. And you know I o s is you I kit and and that's how you build those apps and so what catalyst is designed to do it's to bring these two things back together to some degree so you can take you. I Kit APPs that are built on the IPAD and bring them over the Mac so that its simplest top level viewpoint. That's exactly what it is. You have an IPAD APP. You can bring it over into the MAC now you know. It was interesting when this was debuted at W. C. in June. If you just sat to the keynote you might be under the impression and that all you had to do is check a box. Yeah and you know you check a box and you've got backup. It's really not that simple and guests to apple's credit in the in the developer keynotes later in the sessions it was explained that yeah it'll run but it's not necessarily GonNa look like the best Mac Mac APP effort. You've got to actually do some things to make it more desktop compatible. So you know. That's that's one of the things that I think may have come as is a bit of a surprise over the summer to a lot of people is that it's not. This is not just an IPAD APP. Dropped on your Mac. You can do that. And there were some APPS at launch that were a little like that but to really have a good APP on the Mac. That's coming over from the IPAD. You have to do a lot more work

"Dramatic now in this point Jason voorhees. I'll give him his due. He's racked up an impressive number of kills throughout his movies now, including Freddie versus Jason but not counting the two thousand nine reboot. Jason kills one hundred eighty nine people in the Friday the thirteenth film series. It's not a bad number. He's still way ahead of Michael Myers. But Conan the barbarian killed many many times that number in his first battle. All right. All you need to consider also crystal that Jason goes after the young the week and the scared he catches them off guard. And they always begin the fight being terrified of him Conan on the other hand who wants to test his skills and continuously fight outside his weight class and every adventure. I mean when Jason ever really gone up against someone outside of his. Weight class. When is he met an opponent that really tests him Conan always goes after opponents to test him. He fights armies for one thing. I think it would be impossible to rack up a kill count for Conan since nineteen thirty two especially since he kills such large groups of people, and he's also fought and defeated gods and immortals in Conan's description in his own words, he says I've fought many gods. One included Emma tip. There was an Egyptian God. And he's out wrestle giants. Ogres giant dragons and beaten them all one opponent that he faced at one point was a demon. That was possessing a body made of a substance described as living iron, and we all know that Jason at this point. He says sensually a body possessed by evil and spirit Conan while not throwing out magic himself. He's excellent at. Overcoming magic. And Jason wouldn't be outside his wheelhouse to defeat because he's defeated many other magical hell spawn, but the most notable aspect of the fight is the disparity in their fighting skills. Jason doesn't really have any e watch the movies. He walks towards people. He stabs he relies on brute strength than you know, almost invincibility to get him through everything, but he can't defeat Conan the barbarian with brute strength Conan just has much more. And Conan has also fought fought characters in marvel comics and won his major victories in the marvel universe. And I I hate to say this because I'm going to be defending him in the live show. Coming up is against captain America. That's not bad for your resume Conan fault, captain America in the comic what if Conan versus captain America and cap manage to. Destroy conan's. She'll sword with his shield and manage to side kick Conan full force in the face and Conan tanked it. He ignored the pain kept fighting and stabbed captain frigging America in the leg. There are few people even super humans in the marvel universe. That can no sell a full force kick to the face from captain America. And after that after Conan stabbed him in the leg. He wasn't worth Conan's attention anymore. He basically told cap to stand down and said if you try to fight me again, you'll be dead meat at the end of my blade in a moment. And I'll cap could do was stand there and say, yeah, the students rights and then Conan walked away safely and his other big victory was in a battle with wolverine. So Conan definitely knows how to fight people with healing factors because he defeated wolverine. He showed off some of his fight strategy. Namely when he strategically allowed himself to be cut by one of wolverines calls. Yes. He stood there and allowed himself to be sliced with adamancy him because he knew he could take the hit. And then he could win which he did a Conan realized how fast and agile wolverine was something Jason definitely is not. And he knew that he would have to take the hit and after giving wolverine a free shot Conan went for the decapitation move. And it would have worked if it hadn't been for wolverines adamantine skeleton. But instead Conan sword broke on the Atta Mansi him and wolverine lay dead and bleeding out on the floor. Now Wolverton that Amancio and healing factor would have revived eventually that took many hours or even days and by then, you know. Am was long gone. So if Conan can handle demons gods immortals and definitively beats wolverine and captain America. What's Jason going to do with his slow walk and a machete from dick sporting goods. Counter..

"I'm gonna go with, you know, low level super strength and just leave it at that now. And I actually will agree that Conan barbarian does have some pretty incredible strength, especially because of his size and stature that I do see like people talking about, you know, I've seen references in the comic books. I've read about Conan where he does have really good stealth for human being that size like it's insect superior stealth. But that's really interesting because at actually doesn't compare to the stealth of Jason voorhees in every point number two, which is oddly enough named stealth I like seeing style. So there's something about Jason I found to be very. Very very intriguing. So when he's pursuing his victims he very often catches him by surprise. Jay, you already kind of mentioned that maybe they're in a force cabin. They didn't hear him coming. Or maybe there were so distracted by finding a severed head in a fridge. Then the complete forgot he was chasing them in the first place. But very often. He does something different. That makes them seem like he can either teleport or has super speed or maybe even both. And this is the sinister nature Jason very often. He'll let his victims see him coming in Ashleigh. Let's run away. The soon to be victim things. They've lost him until from out of nowhere. Jason is somehow standing right in front of them. So for example, when chasing one particular victim our large boat. The victim sees the potential victim. Or the soon to be victim. Sees Jason front of them tries to hit him with an axe. Jason just catches the accent tosses it and this soon to be victim sprints in the opposite direction to the enter other into the boat, and it kind of looks like a huge. Sport south boat. So he sprints sprints sprints and from out of nowhere. Jason is somehow there waiting for him when he gets there. Right. That makes no sense on another Cajun a young woman is in what looks like dancehall and Jason in front of her. She turns to try and run another direction and away from them in the moment. She turns over Jason's right in front of her. She turns again, and again, and Jason somehow is right there in farmer until finally turns and guess chasing tired. This actually.

"I don't know I'll get into more specifics in my next point. But for this one I just wanna make it clear crystal that Conan is beyond vanilla human. He often deals with a supernatural based threats including threats that come from the pit of hell itself like demons and Jason voorhees. I mean, he's a slow moving methodical hunter. But a Conan is not going to be like any pray that he's encountered. And by the end of this show. You're going to agree with that statement, even if you don't pick Conan, but I will prove that in a fight between Conan Jason voorhees will just become one of the many many undeterred legions to add to his kill count, which is conservatively estimated to be in the six figures and not the lower wins. Counter. Okay. James? Okay. I love Conan love Conan. But in my research. So it's just a point. I need to clarify Conan is described. I I don't think it's ever been described as superhuman like he's been described as peak human, and I'm willing to say like maybe his breed of humanity might be stronger than modern day humanity. So I get where you're going with that. But he's not super he abs- on Lou superhuman. He is listed as superhuman in every source that I've checked he's in the ten the five to ten ton range. I mean, you can't be peak human and hold up the mouth of a dinosaur or lift a car over your head. So I'm doing a quick Wicky Conan. He's would you say he's like, captain, America's strength. He's much stronger because captain America is peak human and. Conan can do five to ten tonnes. I disagree with that. But it's not a matter of. It is actually because there's a number of things I've read would says completely otherwise. But whatever this is what you do Jay. And I'm okay with that. So I like how you're using it enhanced version of Conan. We'll get back to that later. Now, I do have someone swordsman who could beat Conan is that it would be a Vadim. Well, okay. I thought about that. And I think that's a very good choice. But to be fair. I mean, you'd have to give Vader like a metal sort. I find your lack of faith disturbing. Or you'd have to give Conan alight sabre. I'd still put money on fater. Yeah. Just I don't know who I would pick. Honestly. That. Okay. So with that being said, let me get to my first point. And my first point about Jason voorhees is simply a declared of what really more of a question, which is how do you stop this guy? So when you look at someone like Conan, the bar Burien destroy what have you you have to agree that he can give as well. As take insane amounts of damage. However, there are very few characters within the world of comics and Saifi that can take the amount and insane severity of damage that Jason can. And then still be more than happy to get up and come for more in the Freddie versus Jason film. There's one particular scene where Jason is getting hammered by Freddie, Krueger. Now, keep in mind. This is Freddie Krueger who is super humanly strong resilient himself. So in a period of under two minutes. Freddie. Krueger hits Jason squarely in the chest with a large gas container milk container that has launched and I'm like a high speed torpedo, then he impales him to the ground with dozens of metal spikes hits him with a swing large metal container. That strikes Jason repeatedly. A large regular construction sowed wrecking ball and then tries run over with oversized metal container on wheels filled with construction materials and actually succeeds with that. Now, what was the effect on Jason did he bleed? Sure, did you get slow down for a minute. Absolutely. Did it stop them? Not a chance. In fact, Jason pull the middle Speight spikes out of his body and continue to fight, Freddie, seemingly unaffected by all of it. And another film Jason somehow ambush by an FBI task force and shot Conrad's of times by rifle shotguns in sorta automatic weapons with the end result. He eventually falls down. And then gets up though, as though he's like, perfectly fine. He's got some bullet holes in them. But he keeps coming. Do. You want electrocute Jason go ahead because he's been good number time. So take it and he'll get up once on fire feel free because he won't notice it, and they'll still come after you wanna stab him or him one something go ahead because he'll actually pull that out and use that as a weapon against you wanna cut off a bike part..

"Give us the important details on Conan name Conan the bar Burien Conan, the destroyer Conan, the conqueror king Conan not to be confused with Conan O'Brien he is known for being older than my Mimi because he was created by Robert E Howard in nineteen thirty two as the embodiment of an idealized barbarian wild, strong and. Pellets and capable of toppling armies with nothing more than the power of his sweaty. Biceps and picks Conan himself lived during a time after the waters claimed the lost city of Atlantis and before recorded history. A time called the high boreal age. General powers Conan embodies the archetype of the pre human barbarian and is more comparable to mythic Demi gods like Hercules, achilles Sampson and Hector Conan possesses superhuman levels of strength, endurance, speed stamina and has a mind technically inclined for battle also has an instinct for war in combat making his battle actions impossible to predict and he possesses a bar Burien six cents. In addition to the normal attributes of just being a really big bad ass barbarian. His standard weapon for this fight is his barbarian sword, which is also known as the Atlantis splayed. It is strong enough to cut through standard metal swords and weapons without breaking. An interesting fact Conan is part of the marvel universe. I created in nineteen thirty two, but the booed, and marvel comics and nineteen seventy largely stayed in his own time period, but occasionally cross past with marvel heroes. And it was recently announced that marvel has reacquired the Conan license and the barbarian is coming home. Very cool. I actually got hold of some old Conan of our burying comic books. They are excellent. Like, really, really good classics. All right. Well done Jay. And here the details for Jason voorhees. Now, Jason voorhees was created by Victor Miller and Jason's the main character from the Friday thirteenth film series and made his debut appearance. I write of thirteen film back in nineteen eighty as the young son of camp Cooke churn killer, MRs voorhees now Jason voorhees was born the small town of crystalline on June thirteenth nineteen forty six to Elias. Pamela voorhees Jason was afflicted with severe facial deformities hydrocephalus, which means there's a lot of fluids sort of different parts of your brains. Your head kind of gets really deformed as well. As mental disabilities. Raising Jason on her own hamlet kept us on isolated from the community not letting attend school in educating him in their home on the outskirts of crystal lake. This would eventually lead Jason to respect his mother. Tune insane degree whereby he would take and act on any command. She gave him in the summer of nineteen fifty seven Pamela unable to get a babysitter for Jason resorted to bring him to camp crystal lake where she worked as a cook. Jason had actually been with his mom most of the time instead of other kids leading the most people thinking wasn't very smart. So kids would constantly bully him while being bullied by the other campers at one time Jason tended to escape from his tour mentors, but the cruel children caught up. Him on the dock and through Jason into the lake where he seemingly drowned though Jason's body was ever found the camp closes result. But reopened the next summer. It was close again when Pamela mad with greed murdered berry and Claudette the counselor. She blamed for Jesus drowning Pam was never spent of the murders and all subsequent attempts opened the camp ended in failure presumably due to sabotage from hamels part resulting the camping they've camp. Blood by locals who came to believe the area was cursed. After appearing to have died due to drowning Jason was somehow revived constructing living crew Shelton the poorest Jason seemingly waited for his mother to find him a mash live in the woods surrounding the cat. Our cat Bristol for over twenty years now from then on Jason would go on numerous killing sprees at nearby camps towns and cities Williams Shetty and Waring's icon o'clock you mask having being resurrected from seemingly being destroyed over.

"And wits and makes a choice to listen to good podcasting, but you must be because he here today, right? You've stayed on this logged out, but I, I'm the biggest fan of genes JAMES BOND, and I love the podcast and. Hey, I'll just throw out another if you like to talk in movies, Star Wars. Miniatures pretty good too. That's they are fantastic. So because I feel like we're standing on the shoulders of giants here. It's right at the giant of James bombing, the giant of Star Wars minute. Well, I want to honor them, but we're honoring the giant himself Jason voorhees. So the literal giant. I know he is. He's a, he's thirty. What's the thirty? I know it's changed as in the movies from movie to movie. But I think on average is usually thirty feet. I think he's like three stories is usually the rubric by which and the difficulty that they have to have casting such tall actor. Make it look scale. Remember when blood diva played him? Is he he's a tall guy from basketball. I don't know those. You could tell which what it is because some shots, Jason's a drip lied about school so that that's what he was at. I forget what it is guys from by giant play crystal. That's big enough. He's huge. You don't see it because you know the camera puts on takes off ten feet anyway. No, he's a Mets fan and city slickers. I was gonna say still a giants fan. I would be something that that he would have could've. Then we'd be earning our money when we would. So we're going zero to thirteen thirteen being best. Yes, zero being the absolute worst. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, w. r. s. t. the German food, Yup versed yet. We hate that food. So that's why we would say it's, yeah. At the worst food is the verse. The best score is the Jason's dozen. So these are we see the other thing is we plan the food terminology out way long before we even this was an idea to even do a podcast about Friday. Thirteenth, we were figuring out a food. We said, let's do a podcast that somehow based on food metric and then immediately went Friday that their horse go hand in hand, right? But God darn it. That I have so excited to talk about these movies. He too, and we thought maybe it'd be difficult to rank these because some of them we haven't seen in sometimes one of which I have not seen, but we both found it pretty easy to just go off our guts, and we'll see how that changes felt like CAIR Wak sitting down and writing on the road just flowed out of me by Reagan's for the this is a recurring thing where you are able to bring in. The figures referencing Dr. A chiral. Yeah, and this is going to be difficult. I two for all with this podcast. This is what I got a check myself about. Okay with is like I have to. Paul has to check himself about this is. I can get up my own, but talking seriously about these movies, but I gotta keep in mind. Sometimes people just want to laugh, but sometimes they want the serious thing I'm, but then you gotta make sure you're not just a goofball time that you don't talk about how you really actually love these movies so much. I think you are free to say, hi, lo, wherever the movies take you in a way you can't be blamed, right? Because these are to a movie, one hundred percent effective and the best of filmmaking has to offer. So you're only going to respond to what they're giving you, right? And the listener will only respond to what your responding to and everyone won't know anything's not perfect. Okay, I agree. Okay. All right. Okay. So we'll start with the first one. I think that makes sense. Well, my friends that I want to the dailogue marathon of the police academy movies, and we decided to watch them backwards because we're like those movies are diminishing returns. Are the wind is gonna be at our back more with these back? You know these last ones? Yeah. And then we could end on a high note. So if you're gonna, if you and your buddies are planning on Labor Day, like I was before my junior college, yeah, to to watch these police academy movie, we're like, we're going to for season five of this podcast. Yeah, trouble in Moscow or whatever..

"It was like God. It always existed in always will. What about you. I saw at a part eight was my first, and it was like a stain over at a friend's house. Who had the coolest older brother does we're talking Jason takes Manhattan. Yes. Okay. And Jason takes pulse. Heart captures Paul's agitation. Oh yes. What was the original takes your virginity essentially? The so yeah, I was bending the night at their house and they had Cinemax which was a Pandora's box of other illicit stuff you watch. But and I do mean Pandora's box. It releases evil, Jason voorhees and it was starting up decent takes Manhattan. And you didn't even plan it this? No, it's like, man. Cinemax is on in the background, were just hanging out having fun and talk it and staying up late. And I think this might have actually been the first time to that. I stayed up all night. You know one of those, you're like hanging out with your buddies and it's like it's four thirty. I've never been up this late. It's five here. Hey, it's six. The sun is up. So like technically we can go out and play now that so part of that like that was such a fun adventure admits that I'm watching Friday thirteenth part eight, and it is like a little bit like a bond movie or a season of SNL. The one that you was your sort of first taste or I interested in it. I know people don't. You know, party does maybe seen as a lesser work in the thirteenth cannon, but it holds some special place in my heart because it was the the first one, I I'm right there with you because in a different way, it was a first of mine. It was the first one I saw in the theater was party. Yes. Cool. And so I have a fondness for that movie too, and that you're right. That is one of the lowest regarded one day. Think what was the vied that night during member seeing. Actor, paul. I mean, literally the seats were electrified. Yeah, we weird move over the theater. I think that it was also one of the first times I was really getting a sense of how campy these films were, especially with all the humor when they go to New York slash clearly Vancouver. Right? Yes, yes. And I also, I think I remember having a dream about the main girl and that and it wasn't like an illicit sex stream. I had a real romantic crush on that girl. So I'm really curious to revisit that film and see if we still out by like a Valentine, hard candy chocolate kid, Kahlil flowers. It's funny because I remember her outfit more than her face. At this point. It's really, there's going to be a real through light for the fashion and how much it stuck with us. There's frosted jeans maybe best. Yeah, I think I wonder if I'm right. My recollection of her is that she's wearing white jeans and like a floor print ended up around leather jacket or something. That's right. I could be wrong to your descriptions. So vivid to me. So that's awesome. That the first your first in the theater? Yeah, there's also my first. So that's already shared. When we magic Sharon shears sorcery. Yeah, that's right that we share fate, but that. So did you the previous ones you saw on a video cassette by then? I my friend. I think it was mostly like my friend, Chad, McClure, and I were really into these movies and we would, you know, watch them through a lot of them with not even a sense of where they really fell in the great holiday. Like way I watched bond movies when I was a kid. I think you know, it's like when you get to Lazenby in the bond movie you go, okay, this is clearly between two bonds. So when you get to the thirteenth, the first one and there's no real Jason killer, you're kind of like, this is the first one and how many people right now I guess I said earlier, right, very beginning. I said, Jason. I'm not really in it, but I for some people listening to this, they went hall. Yeah. And so I, we probably shouldn't even say anything more about that one because there is we if you don't know who the killer is. Yeah, shouldn't. But we'll talk about it on that episodes..

"We had each other's backs as one would have been lesser without the other. Absolutely. It was. Trust in voorhees with gore with trust in voorhees with rust and gore lease. Which would mean we'd have to have what if your family members come? Right? So we could have the the plural gore. Oh, you're right every time there because he well, yeah, I guess I'm and is technically gory. We could have had her at least pop in once. Right. And then it would cover this legally legally people like have a fine tooth comb through this and go. Actually there was only one girlie. That's right in these in these episodes, they're not gonna get us in any way and anyway, no way. Should we tell people new listeners who we are and then what we plan to do with this show. So excited because this is just a teaser. Oh yeah. This is just. A wedding of the appetite an hors d'oeuvres. Right? Yeah. Which I guess if we think about is like. In front teeth terms. There's a really good teaser trailer for Friday. Thirteenth part eight. So maybe that's like what we're trying to reach here. It's like a if you've seen it recently, but it's like a fake out or it's a shot of the New York skyline and sort of like, oh, that's right. Yeah, Sinatra music plays. You don't know. It's a try to the thirteenth. Yeah, you think it's maybe going to be like a like a Nora Ephron romantic comedy, because then you see a man standing looking over the skyline. He's still don't always Jason. Absolutely. That little devil. He reveals himself. He's our little friend. So yeah, we're going to. We're going to do one episode for every film of the twelve films. Plus, I think a live episode for a total of how many. I want to quit. This podcast I didn't know would be so hard. I bet every time we do one of these, it's going to be so hard for me to get out of my car because come in. Yeah, I'll be like, I know I'm going to have to face abject terror. I'm not even going to be here. I will have all turned the lights off and be hiding so that you'll go home and then I'll have to sneak microphone kind of underneath the door. And we'll have to leg remix because the chattering Navarre teeth will be too loud. Oh, oh, I like the podcast is teeth chattering the whole time. They're dibley other figure ales. Do you think before we get a door histories? Do you think anybody has had that reaction to watch e a Friday? Thirteenth movie is thankfully battery dot other fingernails has anybody. I think the history is typically first of all that cartoon cliche has to come from somewhere, right? Which means it probably has happened, and there's enough people that have seen enough of these movies. I'm going to say, yes, there's probably one or two. Do you think going further with the cartoon comparison? Do you think anybody's watch us? And they got so scared that they turned completely white turned to stone. The stowed cracked yet add that a little dust pad. Kids let them up, that's for sure. Yeah, without a doubt, people have stories about that like, oh, when you saw freight thirteen than the theater people were just running up the aisles. To stow to crack either. I honestly, the credits roll and I looked around at everyone had turned to stone which a was freaking me out. A beef shows up pretty tough. He's pretty not much fazes me. Yeah, you're pretty brave. Well, maybe that is the that's a good Seekie. Is that how you pronounce it? I think it's ju- maybe that's a good Sajid to our history's has I do feel like are all about you, but I feel like the thing about watching these sort of it was like a test of your strength and bravery is. Yeah, it was a little like trial like maybe like a rite of passage into manhood because you know, you do it with your friends, but you had to seem tough and interested, but I've still scared. Yes. Yeah, I wonder how. Yeah, frequent that experiences for people is the like having watched it with a group and having to prove your medal by not like getting to scared call because when I was a kid that was partly..

"Concern about interest rates how much higher they're going to go i think that's another thing i mean the fed is raising rates it says it's going to raise them this year even more on there's an unemployment report coming out on friday which could spook investors even more if if it shows that the economy is getting too hot and then there are concerns about technology shares i mean we've seen some individual problems different different companies amazon for instance which has been the target of a lot of president trump's angry tweets lately facebook of course with privacy concerns so a lot of the big tech companies that have been helping to propel growth in the market for so long now there are questions about them and all this is sort of combining to cause the market to have the jitters alright npr's business reporter jim zarroli thank you now let's turn out in northern california in the city of san bruno where a woman opened fire yesterday at youtube headquarters wounding three before taking her own life audie cornish host of npr's all things considered spoke to zachary voorhees he's a senior software engineer at youtube they talked yesterday when i approached a courtyard that's when i heard a commotion i heard a man yelling out you wanna shoot me and about twenty feet away from him with somebody on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound in the stomach and he was bleeding out of his shirt and he wasn't moving just gives you a sense of the chaos yesterday youtube npr's laura slidell has been following this story hi laura good morning help piece together what happened yesterday well ahead about twelve forty six pm police say they began to receive numerous nine one one calls about gunshots at the headquarters of youtube which is in san bruno and within two minutes they arrived at headquarters according to san bruno police chief ed barberini responding officers found a pretty chaotic scene and people were fleeing the scene there were police officers then began patting down people as they were leaving the building we have three people wounded who were sent zuckerberg san francisco general hospital where a man is in critical condition there are also two women who were wounded one is in serious condition and the.

"The only point would be that it exists on a blockchain and or can't be inflated and or can't be controlled because that's what those are kind of important attributes of a cryptocurrency the government's never going to make a digital form of money that it can't print out of senator that will never happen and it will never make a form of of money or payment system that it can't control centrally so what's the point i think a crypto dollar would pretty much the same as the current digital us dollar which exists in a in a bank erik voorhees thanks for coming on software engineering daily it's been really great talking to you thanks a lot have a great day users have come to expect real time they crave alerts that their payment is received they crave little cars zooming around on the map they crave locking their doors at home when they're not at home there's no need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to making your app realtime pub nub makes it simple enabling you to build immersive and interactive experiences on the web on mobile phones embedded into hardware and any other device connected to the internet with powerful api's and a robust global infrastructure you can stream geo location data you can send chat messages you can turn on sprinklers or you can rock your baby's crib when they start crying pub literally powers not cribs seventy sdk's for web mobile iot and more means that you can start streaming data in real time without a ton of compatibility.

"Okay pr situation okay all right well i mean it's really nice to hear the counter argument because i agree with you that that there's not much evidence you know to accuse them and i think we we should have should have some counterarguments and and again i'm not saying that i know that they're legit i'm just saying i wish more people would take a neutral position of well it's not really clear either way in so i'm just going to reserve judgment i wish that was a more common instincts but but often people just love to like latch onto to any theory even if it's supported by littler zero evidence absolutely so i know we're up against time if you were to take the opposite position on centralized banking so if you were to if you were to put yourself in the shoes of the smartest banking bureaucrat that you know who is in favor of centralized banking what would be the counter arguments that you would make against the ethos of erik voorhees what are the strongest counterarguments against your ethos i think the the most compelling argument that bankers do and will continue to make is that is that someone needs to be in control i think this is the same impetus that leads people to follow religion it's the same people it's the same impetus that leads people to follow governments in kings people feel like there has to be a leader or someone in control of things and i don't know what portion of society is is open to the suggestion that certain complicated systems don't need someone in control and actually are better controlled without centralized control or in other words operate better more efficiently more safely without a centralized control so i think all the all the bankers need to do is continue to remind everyone of what they already believe which is that you know someone needs to be in charge of of the money so that people are safe that's really all they need to say i think you know any uncritical or.

"Could someday get to perhaps by way of these technologies that we're going to be discussing will probably the right answer to that is to take the humble path of not knowing what the right solution for everyone is this is why i'm generally a free market person is is not because i port to know how the world should work it's because i don't know how the world should work and i think people should generally be left alone to figure that out for themselves so i think that was impossible when money a self was controlled now that there is a way for people to have a free market form of money i think they can actually become more free in their own lives and we can actually see much more experimentation and allow people to live a more sovereign lifestyle do you think it's an inevitability that we're going to get there or do you think there's some probability still that all of this technology could get stamped out i think it's inevitable so what's not inevitable is which of these different cryptocurrencies will be successful right so bitcoin could fail like could fail and any of these others could fail but the ability to move value instantly anywhere in the world for sensually zero cost without anyone being able to stop it i think that is a power that is inevitable in other words as the world as people discover it they will demand it and they won't settle for for less than that so in the same way that you know once email happened or voip or the web itself it's just too powerful for people that could have been stopped there's no way to stop the web after the genie's out of the bottle there's no way to stop email after the genie's out of the bottle it delivers too much value to too many people around the world for it to be prevented forever now that doesn't mean that various governments won't interfere with its adoption or harm it in certain ways but i think over time it becomes universal let's say that a new us president has just been elected and they name you erik voorhees the chief of crypto ican.
