Viral hit: the costs of Chinas lockdown

"The corona virus continues to spread around the world and has now been found in every mainland province. China infections have been found in at least fifteen eighteen other countries in all. They're already more cases than there. Were in the two thousand. Two outbreak of the related SARS virus international responses are wrapping up this morning. Russia's prime minister said the country would be closing its border with China authorities in Australia and Britain have quarantined returning travellers to British Airways and other airlines have canceled flights altogether into and out of China. Today the World Health Organization will meet to discuss whether the outbreak constitutes a global health. Emergency in any case. It's certainly a national one. So I am in China We have had thirty eight more deaths today So we're now two hundred seventy the dead. David Rennie is our Beijing bureau chief and has been visiting villages on the edge of WHO bay the province. which is the epicenter of the outbreak? We have seven thousand dozens seven hundred cases worldwide which almost all of them are here in China they are also being found now. In more than a dozen countries mostly people people traveling from China while sick and turning up in those countries we have evacuation flights going on. We've had the French due to leave today. The Americans left recently recently the Japanese. There's a problem with the fight for British nationals in the epicenter city of Wuhan where the Chinese are playing very hardball as far as we can telling if say the wife of a British businessman also has a Chinese nationality with a child has both nationals. Not letting them leave. Because China in some ways seems to feel he is one of the artery evacuating foreigners as if they can't be trusted to look after them and so the the entire province of who bay is essentially on lockdown. What does is that actually look like on the ground? It's very strange. This is kind of the Chinese Christmas. It's still lunar New Year Villages should be full of people back home from the cities to see their families. I should kids everywhere because school is out. But it's supposed to be a ghost town as you start driving even to ask down away from the WHO bay border. Each village on the roads down has has blocked the entrances with kind of pause model concrete. Pipes there are people guarding villages. Telling people to stay out when you get close to the border there. Police checkpoints are medics six in protection. Suits mosques goggles taking. Everyone's temperature and that's a pretty tense. Because if you're running a fever any reason at all then you could be stuck in two weeks according to you in the nearest Chinese hospital and so how are the people in those border areas dealing with it. How are they feeling about this? Strange situation well. Although from the outside this kind of massive quarantine which is now basically trapped tens of millions of Chinese people in their own homes from the outside that looks draconian and slightly scary strangely. Strange when you're on the ground actually the idea that they can do something anything to keep themselves safe by shutting foreigners out of the village or keeping their kids locked up inside is almost a source of comfort Kmart so one of the strangest place I went was the very last village are before you get the WHO bay border. It's a pretty scruffy village. It's just off the laws motorway exit and they have about two hundred people who have come home for Spring Festival from the city of Wuhan. Outbreak is at its most intense and so they have all been placed on lockdown at home. There are signs in the street saying they may not go out. They can't see relatives. They can't visit friends. I met about Mr Deng. He's a farmer a wheat farmer Vondra show in town and he has two little grandkids and they were kind of peeking their heads out of the front door of his scruffy farmhouse. But he would not let them on the street even though they should be out playing because it's the biggest holiday of the year and he said that you know of course fools. Everyone is worried because from that place you can even into Hubay so the idea is just across the horizon. Has everyone very image. So it's only in an authoritarian country like Mike Chinaware. That kind of lockdown can be done but I mean by the way you described it. It sounds as if it's working with the public. It has the kind of caution that is the suits this situation. So it's It gives people comfort. So He's supposed to the party secretary of the Village Way g he writes the border. The borough who you know. He has the comfort of of paperwork. which if you're a bureaucrat is is what you want? So he has been gene quarantining everyone in the village who came from the city of Wuhan. They're having the temperature taken twice a day. They reported that back up. The next level of government. There's notices. He's on every shop front telling people don't go out. Don't see strangers keep outside as a way so that is the comfort and there's a medical reason that if you stop what people having lots of contact you avoid big crowds that can at least delay the peak of an epidemic which gives you know the people developing vaccines somewhere in a laboratory far away a bit more time but I think you will see outside. Experts say this kind of really blunderbuss lock. Everyone in the whole area in their houses. Approach isn't isn't how you basically stop these things that actually in richer western countries the approach is much more targeted. You literally try and find the people who are infected and then you have these disease disease detectives who try and track everyone that they have met and that is how you stop an infection. That problem with is really tra- coenen approaches. That you frightened people who who might not want to get put an clinic. You flight frighten them and they go into hiding in one of the big promises announced this shutdown says you've ruined city eleven million people but then there was a bit of a delay and so perhaps a million people just disappeared between the announcement and the lockdown. And that's not what you want and so all told how. How prepared would you say the Chinese authorities were for this et relative to for instance the the SARS outbreak in two thousand two? So that's a very low all because back in two thousand to two thousand three when we had this other new virus saws. China spent several months just basically lying through its teeth and denying that this was a problem at all and that led to really hundreds of avoidable. Deaths it was a really disgraceful time. When you had doctors tried to tell the truth getting punished getting getting silenced? China clearly is trying to behave very differently. This time. They've identified the virus they are dealing with the international health organizations like the. Who but there are still question marks about why it took several weeks for the authorities in the main epicentres Wuhan to admit that there was human to human transmission mission. There was a real shortage of testing kits so I think that the verdict is still out on whether China should be praised or criticized for where is handling as well either way the the effect of essentially shutting down entire cities provinces scaring people into their homes even far from the epicenter. That's got ought to have huge effects on on the economy. Certainly the numbers are really really dramatic. I mean basically I mean this is for example. You can go buy sector-by-sector all all major. Tourist sites are closed at the busiest time of the year. This should be the biggest time of the year. For box office takings in cinemas eleven thousand cinemas in China are closed should be a time for massive sporting events. I mean it's like Thanksgiving or Christmas in America. That's this time of year everything's closed and so you're seeing economic predictions that the next GP numbers could see two percent. Growth is one of the numbers. We've seen thrown out there now. We haven't seen two percent growth in China since at the time of chairman mouse. You know they've been doing six seven percent growth in recent times so that'd be an extraordinary hit. Now that all depends really does of does. Does this knock. You know the the global economy six. It really depends how long this outbreak loss so remember that outbreak of Saws Two thousand to two thousand and three which killed nearly eight hundred people. People there was a very very shop. Hit the China's economy but it bounced back because it didn't last that long and then there was a lot of delayed spending and and on a consumption kicked back up this time round of the Chinese economy is a huge amount. Bigger this time round Chinese consumers Chinese tourists wrists a much more important. factor in global economic growth. So there's a lot of people who if China just disappears from global global economic growth this year people in a lot of countries against take a

"Party can win on clay, and teenagers, make Sammy's, and Serena could run the table or she could be thirty seven and go out in the middle weekend. What is that duty your mindset entering tournament when this field is so wide open? It's theme again. And again again, I think it's great. I mean, I don't think there's anything about it. But if you're if you're a player, how does the mindset differ when the field is wide open? And you keep hearing that versus who's gonna take down the big three or who's gonna amount to challenge to the mighty. Serena, I think if you're a young up and coming player, or if you're outside the top twenty you are so excited for these majors. You're, you know, you're like, yes, I have a chance, look at a these people look at Vondra Sova getting to the final of the French Open unseeded, so many players feel like they have a chance some to win others. Have a career changing tournament. So I think that gives a lot of optimism too many, many more players than there used to be in women's tennis. I think it causes a little bit more executive for the top players, little bit more stress on the draws or who some of the floaters might be where they end up 'cause that's obviously more dangerous now than it used to be. But I think it's pretty great. I think that is let's, let's just go the Americans right today. We had coke off, and Katie McNally qualify. They're like, yes. Maybe I can have tournament like Anisimov almost the same age. She just got she just did so well, now maybe it's my turn to do as well. And so I think that brings a lot of optimism. I think it brings a lot of hope for a lot of the younger players, and for a lot of other players that are really good. But maybe haven't had their breakthrough yet. I wonder too with remember the juniors indirect winds. Yeah. I mean, you're, you sort of looking at in women's tennis down literally like if you haven't beaten a top five player, you probably have an indirect win over them. I think they're ten. I mean realistically the men enter the tournament saying, boy, I'd love to have a strong event, and it's, it's lightning in bottle. Maybe I can, you know, cap someone on an off day, but I think you've got to be pretty realistic. If you're anyone outside the top four, right? You're, you're probably gonna win this, then that the priorities are the goals shift just a little bit. Maybe before maybe on the women's side, maybe some of the players that aren't seated or even thinking they can get quarters around fifteen on the men's side. Maybe they're thinking more third-round at least right now in this generation of, of these players doing so. Well, it it's fascinated. It's a total switch of like the nineties and women's and men's tennis were men's tennis was a little bit more open. Maybe the late nineties early two thousand years was more open invents tennis. And now just not the case. There's just no breathing room at the top for anybody else. That seems like and we have this crazy historical race going on that. It's just mind blowing all these majors that these three have been able to stockpile it seems like so I think it's kind of fun to have it both ways. I mean everyone waiting to see you get at the end of Wimbledon, like where's the grand slam tally? Does he extensively? I, I kinda like it. I can't be easy for a lot of the players because they're they don't have a lot of chances. But I don't know the fan now. And as a journalist, I think it's awesome. It's awesome. Right. And I feel like the, the men's and women's tours play off each other really well now and it used to be when you're playing, which is right when I started covering tennis. It was like women women women women and the men. It's wide open in one day. It's Alcasa the next. It's thomas..

"Want will advertise link on Twitter, and we put our prediction of the day on, and I mean, honestly, I've, I've come up with, with a went on a four day run of getting everyone wrong. But then last night or the day before we, we made three predictions one of them held overnight. I said, Vondra shiver in two sets Catherine said team in five sets and Matt said, Nadan three cents. So we got a full house so yeah, we all smoke and we're gonna not gonna apologize for it. Come on out with it. Well, come on saying saying a month ago that body's going to win a grand slam this year was come on. That was quite good. It was all collectively, it was wonderful rule time greats so doing now trying to take sort of pulled cast family ownership of that prediction. I'm actually not to irritated by it because I'm it's offset by the fact that I'm very happy. Fresh boaty. Yeah. Apparently, she's really not found of that photo. Yeah. Right. Is it is everywhere, actually, I wouldn't by any papers tomorrow. If I we I think you'll be seeing it a few times. I did you think you read the player's Tribune peace with her sisters from maybe a couple years ago, I read it today, just describing what she's like and, and what they're like, is a family, and I don't know it just it's it is a really feel-good story, isn't it because Austrailia has has really lapsed this up? I mean she is so them isn't she? She they, they really, they really get her. It's, it's, it's just a lovely story. And I mean, I, I agree with you. I think she could move on from here and her game is solid absolute. She can do this on play my goodness. You know, we might suddenly have a period where she well, she she could be well, number one, and, and she probably will be in the not too distant future. And she come be a threat. I'd put it put any stronger than that she can be. A threat to every grand slam. She enters high on. That's really that's really to say that the world number-two every grand slam. She enters David's. That is a redundant comment. Kerber is not a threat to Ronin girl says she nine okay? But you know most of the mall. Yeah. Okay, I'll give you free pass because of the general. "She played Jeannie Bouchard. She's on her way to the fourth round. I mean, that was a pretty great showing for hers. Well, but now, she's kind of finding her stride because the way she plays she puts all these junk and slice and dropshots and our game. She's not just a classic, you know, tall pounding baseliner, she's super creative, and I don't think a lot is known about her. But this year alone just made quarterfinals of Indian Wells Miami, an room and the files of Budapest and Istanbul. That is a pretty strong season. Even if you're new that is a remarkable year, especially for someone as young as her. I mean she has so much swagger so much flair. Like I really enjoy watching her place. She reminds me a little bit of Nashik road, once ga and she also has a little bit of Hinson her and she moves on the court. Like she just makes it. Look so easy. I, I understand that fans, oh well all professionals, make it look so easy. But as a pro tennis player, I mean, watching her play I'm like, I mean, she antecedents exceptionally well. And like you said she uses a drop shot, which is my favorite shot of all time. So I'm a huge fan of her just on that accord. So it's going to be a heck of a match between content and Vondra Sova. I mean, the fact that Konta was able to just dismantle Sloan, I mean Sloan, I don't think played her best, but concert just on fire, even though I remember clearly, her talking to the press. I think it was last year, the year before telling them that if you start saying how bad you on surface. You start believing it and the press was like on her about it, and this year, she's definitely proved them wrong. Oh, yeah. Konta also lost her first four first rounds in Paris. So I think she was feeling a little bit low, but things have definitely turned for her. It'll be a really interesting matchup, because I mean boundary Sova has a lot of creativity. We said a lot of drop shots, but conscious of great court cover. I mean she I kind of expect a similar match. Maybe we'll be saw with Vondra Sova taking on petro Marge who covers the court incredibly, well, but I don't know I feel like just maybe a little bit of a mental thing where she just couldn't quite shoes up five to five three in the first set against Bonder Sova, and she definitely had chances, but and should be in her four times. So I was a little bit surprised CBA yourself gets through. But there's something exciting about a teenager. I mean we, we were talking about teenagers so much this grand slam on the women's side, and we kind of overlooked Vondra sober little bit. She just turned twenty this month in our defense. It just it just seems somebody that's a little bit quiet a little bit not, not, not a big fast rising star that everyone's hyping up. And that's kind of a great thing for her, because she might not feel the pressure and the executive that comes with being, you know, the w chase it girl you're kind of just doing your thing. And you keep saying just playing my game. And Wunderlist was like, okay. Yeah. No. What? Is your game? And she goes play shots. I mean that's sums it up right there. You have to have an exceptional man of confidence to drop shot. Because the girls on the tour are fast. So you have to be faster knowing that when they get there they're going to try and hit a great shot. And the way that she passes lobs players with ease. I mean one of the highlights I was watching between her and Marge. She brought Martin was able to lob a girl that's over six foot like nobody's business. And like I said, I mean you wouldn't think that she is turning twenty this month, because she just plays like such a veteran. She just sees the court so easily and it's just it's very fun to watch as a fan. The dropshot lob combo is so cool to see when it works. And it's so disappointing when it fails I mean March went for it, which I thought was very bold when on match point had dropshot market..

"I mean, the absolute opposite facility was as great ball, strike under great move, right? Thought saints even just retrieve many boosts today, for conscious say the fact that she's beaten such different styles of opponents already makes me think maybe maybe, but she's, she's going to have to hunker down for some dropshots isn't she and be patient? That's the key. And I feel like that's the key. That's got her this far too. Not not worry about everything going her way or being played on her terms to be a bit more. Mentally, flexible. But I do I do think he's been crucial and thinking more about about what he said yesterday because it took a bit of digesting, because, you know, it didn't come out it didn't come out what he had to say very digestible form. But actually, there was really interesting insight in there, and it's, it's the sort of approach to coaching our gym member chat. We had the Australian Open maybe last year with just green about Alexander's VERA of an about coaching in general in the fact that you can only do a good job of coaching, if you're not worried about getting fired. And there are there are a lot of coaches out there that I think part of their MO is trying to convince players how essential they are how they, they couldn't be doing what they're doing without them without them in their corner that there's somehow fundamental to to what to what the player themselves is doing well Dmitri's Avilov his approach seems to be almost bordering on talking himself the job. You know, the sort of the not quite mind games. I think that's too. To negative a slot to put on the, you know, the way he's sort of punts ideas in a head, and let's come come to things herself. Let's, let's have autonomy either herself. That's I mean, Mary Carillo said yesterday didn't she is like parenting. You've done your job when you make yourself redundant or you make at least make your child slash charge. Feel like you're redundant. And I think I think that's a really interesting mental dynamic. And I think, you know, I'm lazy to say he's the secret, I successor anything because I think she's the secret to harangue success. But I think he is absolutely nailed the approach to that coaching relationship. I've seen these plans vendors Shiva and contemplate the twice and the first one was a win for fundraiser on hardcourts. I think Indian Wells last year and that straight sets the second one was in Rome, a couple of weeks ago and Konta won handily frankly, Vondra Shiva was on fumes, she she'd put so much into previous rounds. And she just got nothing left in the tank and as nothing not to take away anything from from concert, but it was it wasn't a match. We're expecting that all the now drop shots, we were expecting one hundred dropshots from Ron ju- chevik because that's what we've seen in the previous round and it was concert in all the drug shows. So it'll be very interesting. I, I can imagine. I kind of well, I don't want her to drop shot me, so I'm gonna drop shot her first. That's what it was like it was for that interest on Thursday. This'll be this'll be a way better match there because the both fresher the both inform. And I think we I think we could be looking at ten eight in the third a really yesterday's. So this week's edition of the tennis podcast is brought to you in association with zone who have centers, Catherine the sonar beam this speaker that attaches to your television. "So I was listening to that commentary. And she said it was one of the best clay-court matches ever and Chris Evert is won. The French seven times. This woman has seen some tennis. This one is played some tennis. And I I'm looking, I'm sure there is an element of just the moment about about that sort of comments. Because when you watch tennis like that you do get swept away. But then you actually look at the nuts and bolts of what we witnessed and it's hard to imagine anybody playing better than that. And. The thing is now she's up against a player in Vondra Roosevelt, who ever also said in the opening to your program today that she is convinced that this woman will win a grand slam tournament and it really does wet the appetite doesn't it? I mean just I had Grisha that in the quarters but I thought she would lose, ultimately, I thought KiKi Burton's would did you have a leasing petro Montijo, David, I had a losing, but it that way before she before the semi finals. But no, I didn't I didn't go on that particular match. I thought wondrous she would would get get it passed Nottage in the end. But that was a brilliant match concert incidently on, on the subject of the way. She looked I noticed on the court in the court interview afterwards. She just looked delirious with happiness as you say, just. Quite disbelieve can't quite believe how wonderful this moment is. And I'm sure the fact that she's had the lows over the last couple years has contributed to that to make her feel like oh, you know, I didn't know whether this was going to happen again. I heard maced of what you just said. David was a rather large loud. French announcement with jingle they love and announcement with a jingle in these parts that drown you out there. But I think I the gist and yeah, I I it was a joy today is an absolute joy. And one hundred think I look at the metro, which in controversial, and I think wow, you Jewish is game is just so different to anything conscious face thus far, but then Stevens was something really different to what she had faced us for her two. Previous opponents contests had been plays with with lovely ball stroking ability, but it didn't hit the ball that well, sorry hit the ball that will didn't move that will. That was what was sorry Matt. That's. Those were the two sort of defining traits of both Cosme mover and Donna, vacuous lovely ball, strikers, but not great movers..

"She's got that wonderful left-handed game and, and drop shots every ten seconds and, and you can only imagine what vendor Savary against several Stover is, is going to be light. But what, what was your sense of what you witnessed with Mertens and several service today? Well variety was the word word of the morning on the women's side, because we spoken about how beautifully Martic played. And then you we Vondra Sova had beaten rows Navarra with left. Spins and dropshots and know the variety she brings and then seven stove just took it up another notch. It was just an absolute joy the whole match. And we should say Mertens I thought was the perfect foil for several stove because she gave a solid solid consistent bowl that then kind of allowed seven over to pull out all tricks and. Mutton tried to chase everything down. But several Stover was dropped shutting slicing using angles and yet she still had to save five match points because Mertens was playing that, well, but several stove on each match point just came up with such gutsy tennis on the on the first one, I think I said she went full Dow pot throw with a forehand which which she just nailed into the corner. And there was another one with a swinging drive Volya that was one with a drop shot every four hundred drop short that she hit the one that just went over the net. And and insertive did like a, a right angle, turn? During that it second bounce, I think was outside the tramlines. I just some sort of wizardry was going on there. And it was really interesting because she she gave a really nice into to Catherine afterwards. And, and she said, I was having so much fun. I didn't want the match to end. We will thinking that as well. And she also said that she she was so gutsy on those match points because she folks she'd been too passive for the rest of the match. So she thought I need to go for it now and it paid off. It was it was fantastic to see. It's been quite an advert. Doesn't it this tournament so far for the final set that gets played out, and I think because we've had seventy sixty eight with John is ner, and then the, the twenty six twenty four that he had against Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon last year. Everybody's had a bit of a Downer on the final set that you play out. And we've since subsequently had two more tournaments Wimbledon and the Australian Open both bring in final set. Tiebreak. Be it's at different times. And I've certainly become one of those that have started to, to campaign for the final set tiebreak simply because I think a full stop is needed. And and I liked the drama of those matches as well. But it's had a different fail. Here, hasn't a in this match that we've described civic over eleven nine we've had air baron pair yesterday with we've had several. Yeah. I think at your spending open. I was completely convinced that match tiebreaker champions tiebreak, I ten was was the solution because there were some absolute Korca's there. And yet here we've, we've had some real treats with seeing seeing them extended. And maybe, maybe that's okay. Maybe that's good. Maybe maybe both solutions are fine. And we don't necessarily need uniformity across is Andy Roddick who said that the, the week to us wasn't it on the podcast. Yeah..

"But you don't have to you can do very well. Berkshire in Warren. Buffet have very little of their capital. They're trying to buy more international companies and he's been trying for years. He's done pretty well with just kind of mostly sticking to the US market. Hey, speaking of Berkshire Hathaway in buffet our next question comes from Vondra, who's in Sao, Paulo, Brazil. Let will happen to Berkshire Hathaway stock. The day buffet announces his retirement, he's eighty eight. So it's possible. It could happen soon. I have no issues with him continuing to lead the company, but for natural reasons, we tend to think about his eventual retirement, it'd be great to hear we think. Yeah. A great question was at the Berkshire meeting this may, and you know, it's just amazing. When you see you mentioned, Warren Buffett up there at eighty eight and taking questions for six hours from you know, forty thousand people or fifty thousand whatever was there and Charlie Munger sidekick vice-chairman's ninety four. Mentally sharp. Right, amazingly, sharp and still eats about a boxer to peanut brittle and drinks. Cherry coke the whole time. So so much for your doctor's orders of eating healthy and long jetty. But the great thing about Berkshire. And I've owned it for a long time. This question, I remember reading this on our discussion boards in the nineteen nineties the late nineties, you know, buffet seventy some years old, you know, now we're getting twenty years in the past. So here's here's what I would say. I would be surprised if Berkshire stock went up when Moore buffet step down. Right. So it's it's probably going to go down. But then again, this is baby. He's built this thing. There are some things that are very unique about berkshire-hathaway first of all they have a wonderful bench strength of managers, and they have a decentralized organizational structure, so although the own eighty plus businesses they're all run by their own entrepreneurs. And great people in buffet has no real insight into those businesses. He understands what's going on. He gets the numbers. But they run those day to day. He does not. All he really does is capital allocation, and and and management. So the capitalization stuff. He's hired a couple of really good folks to do that Todd combs and Ted Weschler or helping out on that. And he's got some great people in any insurance opposition up operations with G, Jane, and Greg able will take over some of the other operations for their manager of oversight and the management duties of Berkshire. So he has great people there, and my guess is if you're anticipating that the stock's going to get crushed. That's probably not going to happen. They have lots of capital, and I'm sure that the people are taking over the reins for more, and we'll have free rein to buy back stock. It will if it reaches a certain price. So if you're expecting that I'm waiting for that day. It's probably not gonna come amid day will come when he'll step aside. But the the price probably won't be on sale as much as you think. So I wouldn't worry so much about that. I've also owned it for several years. Probably not I'm sure not as long as you. But I have I don't like you. I don't have the same concerns. I mean buffet has shown an ability to invest in good businesses. And he has also shown ability to investing good people, and those people will still be there after he retired. Yeah. Yeah. And they have one hundred billion in cash, it's it's hard. There's not many companies on the on the earth that have the balance sheet strength that Berkshire Hathaway has right now. And we know that they are willing to allocate it very quickly. I think he bought almost forty billion of apple in the last few, you know, year or so so he'll put it to work when he finds ideas, another example of how you could possibly own more apple than you think. Yes. That's right next. Question comes from moral morale. Not quite sure how to pronounce it so pronounce it many ways. My wife, and I are twenty six and twenty eight respectively. I just started new job with what I feel is great pay and I'm trying to start good savings and investing habits, but I'm getting aggravated because they are too many goals to hit..

"Because just bored me to tears. And then they brought us seven of nine, which guys who think they're funny. It was a two best leagues about that show. Mm-hmm. You sexist prick. But, but it was just, but the fact of the matter is, is that Star Trek beyond the fact that I love next yet next year is my preferred Star Trek next year in the films of the original cast. I, I have not. I have watched the classic t. o. s. as some people call it, I've watched that. I appreciate it, but it's it's, it's a show, my wife and I can watch together because she likes it too. She bought me the box set of the series a couple birthdays ago and it's not an and I don't wanna get into the whole, who's better Kirker card or whatever. I just like those characters because I spent my school years with. I was in sixth grade when it premiered and it was my senior year of high school when it ended. Yeah. So it felt like I was. Graduating to something. No, yeah, I was only you're behind you, but it was very, very close to that. And I look at a number of the shows of my listeners start going through kind of the the also rans. And a number of them had a couple seasons beyond high school for me, but I really had stopped watching a lot of television by then because when you're in college television door Ramir not. Yeah, not watching a lot of it. Babylon five's and other show that gets mentioned a lot. I'd never watched a single episode of it. I have to be completely honest with you. I know Jean-Michel Stransky was the show runner, and there are a number of people who we are friends with, who are huge fans of the show. The show had a pretty pretty faithful following and still logged at around in. It was gonna launch and then paramount. Put deep space, nine into production, and they were kind of similar and remember there's, I think they're still kind of kerfuffle about that. I watched a couple of episodes. The one episode that I remember reading watching specifically because Peter, David rodent. But I was I was, here's a thing by the time that show came on. I had a social life. That is something I've found us. I started to go through this whole mini series and I jokingly say it will joking, but I say the cutoff for the Cup, my coverage for the most part, you know, stuff believes in into things we get off on tangents about things that are more current day, but nineteen Ninety-six is really kinda cut off for me because I was my sophomore year college. Parents finally ponied up the money for cable and it was kind of a game changer by then you're right, like, but I look at like nineteen ninety four hundred nineteen ninety-five, which is my senior of high school, and I did actually get a girlfriend and that that does change a lot of the time you spend in front of the television might be less than his. You're going to movies and you're, yeah, you're doing stuff with your friends in occasionally, you know, it'd be like, well, let's get together and we'll just watch Star Trek and that's fine. But it's not like, you know. Three or four years earlier where sending mornings, we'd get the morning call. I plunked down the TV guy that was in it and I would plan out my Sundays and Saturdays by what movies were coming on in what shows were coming. Yeah. 'cause after Star Trek extreme around the time, Star Trek finish ration- syndicated networks syndicated you know, the production companies that were doing things for syndication really caught onto the fact that there was some money to be made, especially among on kids who had been watching cartoons. We're now starting to age out of those cartoons and needed something to watch if they were if the as almost like an alternative to where they could maybe compete with some cable stuff and some MTV stuff because not everybody had cable EM TV back in the late eighties yet. And so you would have. Horror series like Friday the thirteenth series and freddy's nightmares. Yeah. Yes. Vondra made a deal with. Two. So Kirsten takes, but he broke the pact, let cost. So. No, his niece, Mickey and her cousin Ryan have inherited the store with curse. They must get everything back. Terror begins. Tails the dark side. I watched crap at tales of the dark for the I..

"But Larry, I share wouldn't at least tag him. Right, exactly. So what are you looking at? You're you're talking about the in theory, the best wide receivers out there on the market could be Randall Cobb golden take Kevin white, and maybe somebody out of the blue who we didn't expect to had a great year, but would they be really proven? So I'm wondering if Atlanta thinks that the market's going to calm down and that's why they can tell Julio, hey, we're not gonna make that adjustment because they know next year there's not going to be a contract out there that's going to take him off. Like you're saying like this, a look a little bit more like a blip on the radar looks and walk and steals might be a little Sammy Watkins, sixteen million. What do they think? It's crazy. It's crazy. And again, like this is part of a good problem. To have. This is part of drafting while to for the falcons, you know, they, they got their left tackle and Jake Matthews, but more so the way they've drafted on defense and bringing guys like Vic Beasley and Dion Jones, Vondra Campbell, they've put a lot of town on that side of the ball, and some of those guys are coming close now to the end of the rookie deals, and they're going to have to take care of a lot of those guys. So again, it's just a tough precedent to set going in and revising guys deal when he's still got three years left, especially when this is supposed to be the benefit for the team. Right? Like agree of you, you give them big money up front, you're giving them big money up front because that's the money there are shirt of. And the trade off is, okay. You're going to give me these non guaranteed years on the back end. Okay. Lou news item number three. All righty.
