"This is in response to concerns. People have had about what's known as porch. Piracy packages left unattended Porteous that are stolen by seeds. So this gives people in opportunity to have a little security by having the package delivered to the trunk and this. This follows the the people can open their doors to their houses. They can leave stuff in garages. And now, even if you take the car out of the garage, you can you can still get a package delivered. It's gotta be something that Amazon, and and I guess Ford because of the partnership at Amazon itself is hoping will lead to even more delivery packages. -solutely actually also cut Gale's with General Motors and Volvo cars for the same program. And what they do is they provide it's all to an app Amazon app that connects in this case to forts apps, and and they provide kind of a one time calling coin if you will to unlock the car for the delivery driver, and then he puts the package in your trunk or perhaps in your backseat and. And then he we locked the car. Make sure that is locked drives away. These have to be obviously cars that are able to remotely unlock a trunk versus the old days where you needed to key to get in. I mean, these are for newer fancier cars, or at least the the newer generation of cars. What is known as connected cars cars with modems. And in Ford's case that's twenty seventeen Ford models or twenty eighteen in newer Lincoln models. But more and more cars are becoming connected and depths opening this whole new portal of commerce into the automobile. We know what the benefit is, I guess for Amazon more ways to deliver their packages. So so maybe more packages being sold. What's the upside for the automakers in all of this? What did they get out of this arrangement? Well, they really want to get on the ecommerce gravy train, then start taking a cut of the action that would be coming into their cars. So Ford is starting with Amazon. They also have the deal with some mobile car. Washes that could come in wash your car when you order them on the nap there talking to grocers and other retailers to try and get as many deliveries into the cars. They can they get the data. They get a cut. It gives them a new revenue stream WBZ's, Ben Parker speaking.

"Talent is very savvy. They kind of know which companies might be simply talking versus the ones that are actually prepared to back up to talk with some bold different steps above and beyond that, I think we're a little bit lucky Peter to be honest with you because automative is very hot. You know, if you've spent the last ten years that they spoke or Google, or, you know, high flying company, you know, it's it's really interesting work. But at the same time, you might be one of fifty people doing what you do when you come into autumn OT. Give you might be the first person who does something for an industry because new things are quired and being developed every day. So it's a unique space and people, you know, believe that they can actually make an impact that will last for decades and decades changing how these cars were how phones and cars come together. Then they how car strive themselves how you lower friction and make a car work like getting a car work more like a service such as that flex or Spotify. So those are very interesting problem spaces where people want work. So I think we've been a bit lucky from from that perspective. And so now, the focus will be retention and the question on the table is, you know, can we go great careers for people who come in with those backgrounds and heap them around for a long time. So that they can make different than only what they came into. But also in. The the the new challenges that will come up for years to come. If you're you're a rare bowl time chief digital officer. It's a ruined of role that they're not a lot of people that have held it more than once you have done. So he referenced before you're experiencing McDonald's for more than three years. You were the chief digital officer of that I kinda brand and I wonder how what has been similar, and what has been different to cross your experiences at sea as a CD o obviously very different industries and the application of the digital technology will be different as reflecting those differences in the industries, but likewise, perhaps jewelry in your first experience that has colored the way in which you defined your second. In addition, of course, to the the the the different sets of responsibilities. You have had Volvo with addition to the goal CIO role. So talk a little bit about what what rhymes and what doesn't between your multiple experiences as chief digital outsor-. Peter welter, really great question. I mean, there's some things I've had to learn as I've come into a more. Banded role and Boba cars, and I'll touch on that. But let me start with the upside of combining the desertion were of the consumer with what typically have been called IT and under CIO. And I think the the main benefit is that you can have intended control and accountability over what you're supposed to deliver. So for example, if we say that we really want to be in any commerce business and make it easy to have customers deal with directly and that only order a car, but no the pricing and the configurations and then whereas the car right now is being built is ready for pickup excetera, you can imagine. There's a lot of different systems involve when it companies separates the CD. Oh role and says, okay. Well, you own the front end. And what the experience looks like and someone else or another part of the company own owns the systems behind the scenes factually able of the information data flow that can work, but it's actually harder and slower because it's these things are very dependent on each other. And so. A joint CIO CDL role creates a clear accountability. 'cause I think that's important about ownership and accountability. And I think those things actually promotes speed I privileged to do that here. Boba Kors McDonald's. It was a bit of a different situation. Now at the same time I've had to learn because while I've been involved with engineering and product of for a long time doing it in a company that's been around for ninety years. There's been some new elements. I've had to pick up. So for example in the big business. You won't do everything yourself. You won't have engineers on your own payroll building everything you will use their parties software. For example. You'll use consultants from time to time. They're just things that make sense. They're not core. They're not differen-. Cheaters, and you're going to get them help from the outside and in in a big company like Volvo cars the scale of that is pretty huge. And so you're going to have managed vendors going taps to strategic sourcing men those areas which have this skill. They make a difference in terms of the operational efficiency. And then the the cost and so that focus has been in area for me personally in the last couple of years and area where I've had to people around me. So I can do a good job for the company. So definitely been some learning in sort of taking on the a bit of an expansive role. They're very interesting. I'm curious also, how do you see as you look to the future? What kinds of trends or particularly citing you vision, a number of them already? But, but I wonder you know, as you think two or three years out what what are other ones that are beginning to make their way onto your your rose. Now. Peter been talking the last year or so a lot about digital health. And and my thoughts have been sort of volving. But I'm a really big believer in it. I think Wedneday you might step into a car, and it's going to be like stepping into a giant fit. So let me break that down low. But he's the analogy doesn't you know imagination doesn't set off. So clearly, but there's so much technology inside a car right now. And if we think about the sensing and perception of how it could understand your state and your wellbeing, and how what your what your health is. And how can contribute to that? In a way, that's your private and comfortable for you. I think there's a ton of opportunity there. So just to take some examples, and these are simply concepts, and there's a lot that we need to be worked out from consumer comfort. Level fan point in doing it the right way. But just this take some examples some cars will begin to ship with cameras face driver. And the might be an option and cars. The opportunity to use that for safety when it comes to drowsiness detection, for example, or for people who have diabetes, and they're your glucose levels are falling. The cameras can actually play a big role there because the cameras can really tell through people dilation with a pretty good confidence level. What what whether those conditions are coming. And if we think about somebody driving, and you know, they're gonna draw the or the the blood sugar levels falling. You know, is that a an option that makes sense for some people. Just by by way, of example, you know, car is in seats have some sensors, but the sensor capability is really volving quite rapidly. The cost of the sensors as falling for example. So there's a lot more information that can be put together there. And then you start thinking about AM machine learning. And then you could potentially get into. Here's where you could understand the problem before it occurs on people. How to do them the right way? And is that Corp business probably, but we work with other companies who are really trusted by consumers to think about people's health. And well being I think that you know, that's near that we at least have to explore. So do health is one. I think sustainability is very important. That's actually part of votes mission and purpose. Our purpose is to give people the freedom to move in a way that personal safe and sustainable, so I talk about sustainability, you know, it's not just about using an electric car is it's about supply chain. And how are we sourcing materials, and what are those materials? So it's about the card so physical standpoint. And I think in the future. Everything will be quantifying quitting people's footprint on how they're affecting the planet. So the you might be charging your car electrically, but you need to go back to the source of that electricity all the way if those are renewable sources, and so that's a little bit further out. But I think that companies need to think about sustainability as a CSR thing. But actually core attribute of their product service. Think was perfect company the lead the charge there. So those are those are a couple years where I'm

"Momentum in these things momentum. I think feeds on it. So you mentioned partnerships ought of. And I know that in leading the California operation for the or for Volvo cars that you have developed a good number of those those partnerships with the broader tech ecosystem, the venture capital community as a means of really thinking, more broadly and marshalling ecosystem to to to breathe life into vision that you created and I wonder if you could talk a bit about that. I after imagine that was a new set of undertakings for the organization new way of thinking. How'd you go about that? Well, fortunately for me. A few months before I arrived, the company already decided to put a small satellite in via California. And that was great. Because at about the same time we in talking to the large largest companies out there, and I'll just pick a few Google Amazon and Google about what we could do together. And so all of those conversations actually resulted in strategic partnerships in the case. And and so in terms of why are location is important? There is really because the proximity allows our teams to co create with our partners on the other side in the case of Google a lot you can do with companies like Google, and so this is just one element of it. But we partnered on embedding version of Android in our cars. And what that means is we all know, what infotainment systems are in cars and generally have been really clunky to use. And now, we think about an opera. Some like Android, and we say the car is device on wheels. So what if you had a an infotainment system that we're actually based on on Android, and there will be a lot of benefits to that. Because you could ample not have to have your phone, would you and still have all your relevant information like your calendar? Your contacts, you know, in in the car and available to you. And so there there's a huge convenience there. And on top of that your car is never left behind when it comes to navigate mapping because we've all been suffering for years and years where the cars are actually behind the phone when it comes to information about that's nations peo- Isaac cetera. So we've been one of the first two companies to to to move in that direction is to just dip our toes, but essentially really think of the cards device based on an Android operating system. And the customers will start to see that you know, within a couple years and cars starting with bulbs. Now, I don't think that would have been possible unless we made session to really have a strong California presence since I've come in we've grown that. It's probably going to be ten times larger than you know, where I inherited it. So we've definitely are in the process of killing it up in terms of what we do there. There is definitely some product development, some of the ecommerce things that I mentioned ring developed are surely there, but also in Sweden, but on top of that to to your point, Peter we have partnerships and business development capability there. We look to work with both big tech companies the ones I mentioned, but also young startups that can really push the envelope. And so far we have actually not only decided to work with. But also invest into young companies one is called Lumina or they do a lighter, and I can. Geek out on lighter. But I refrain from that for a minute and the other's called free wire, and they do fast mobile charging. And so whether you think about Thomas drive, and the role of lighter technology or the idea of fast charging electric car, and they're both very sound. Like, they would be really excellent things to do for to bring to our customers. And that's only possible by having. You know, local talent people we've pulled from, you know, really great Silicon Valley experiences, and then combining that with the networks, they bring in the networks said high also have being very close to companies like gray, log Andriessen Horowitz Koya having worked with some partners over there back in the day. And so we're we're hopeful that we'll continue to give us a bit of an edge. Excellent. And you know, you in in as the company made the decision to plant a flag in Silicon Valley. They did. So in in the perhaps. The the difficult place on earth from a talent perspective to to to to drawn keep talent because of the number of opportunities. Great technologists have in that area. Of course, given the the startup community in tech tech community were generally speaking in that region and curious how how how you built your team came to give us a bit of the makeup of the team. Also be interested in how you conveyed the sort of proposition. You know, made this attractive option to to great technologists who have so many options at their Beck and call. Talent is a very essential thing. Because if you have the right strategy, and you have the right talent things, you know, the right things will be bound to happen. I think talent builds on it self. So I credit to our seato up on Samuelsson who made a a really great trip to Silicon Valley, you know, about three years ago met with top venture capitalism. Group living Mark Embree and Marc Andreessen put them together with be we had conversation necessarily about just about ideas. Really and one thing led to another and I found myself in the company and so once I arrive people began to think, okay. Well, that's interesting in Volvo would make a little bit of a different higher. When it comes to having, you know, sweet person from Silicon Valley and having that person based in the US. As well. So that's those were different moves. And so people began to notice I got a lot of outreach pulled from my network, etc. Etc. So I think to kick it off you need to start with the right person and send the right signal to the marketplace that's very important because talent

It's great to speak with you today. Yeah. Thanks for having me pleasure to be here. I thought we would begin with your current set of responsibilities. You're the chief digital officer in global chief information officer Volvo cars, and I wonder if you could just take a quick moment. And and unpack each of your set of responsibilities. How are you those defined from your your point of view? Sure beater will. I think what's interesting with caught a little bit differently about these responsibilities as I came into the oval cars two years ago in in some environments, you find the chief digital responsibilities separate from what's been called IT and what we've chosen done here. That's a little bit unique is actually bringing them together. So just to give you a flavor for why we think that's a good thing for our company and probably prouder companies as well, if you think about it the world is moving very fast, and whether you're billing things for the consumer or you're building things for the internal enterprise. Everything needs to move with. Speed and agility, and so by combining the traditional responsibilities of the CIO, which are have typically been under IT with what a chief digital officer doing towards the consumer uplifting all the digital products that we build in all the software we build into organization to move with with the speed and agility, we need to stay relevant, and and do great things for customers. It very interesting. And I would love to also just kind of CD, oh is one of those roles that is defined very differently in different organizations. I I know that, you know, from from some of the reading I've been doing on your background, you were you developing digital technology transformation within the organization while also focusing on customer experience and and building digital products. And I wonder if you could give some examples of each of those how do you see customer experience changing, especially in the auto industry involving more specifically through? The use of digital technology. It's a it's a great question. I mean, we think about it very simply in in two buckets. The first is how people get their hands on a car and second is what they can do with the car once they haven't. And both are in the midst of some really radical changes where they're gonna work a lot better for people. So to touch on the first B's buying a car is a laborious process. It's not one that people really enjoy. And so how can we radically simplify that? Of course, we need to give people the interfaces like e commerce so that they can be in control and kind of understand the different possibilities. What kind of cars? Do we have can they figure them how quickly can they get the hands on the car that they like excetera, whereas the car right now before you know, it's being handed off to me, for example, in the extent we've taken there. There is to pioneer the idea of corruption. So we live in a subscription economy. People are very familiar with Spotify and Netflixing how that works. And so we've thought about the same model for cars, and essentially the way it works is that we provide a very flexible way of getting your hands on a car without having to sort of, you know, go to a retail side and really work out all the details because you simply what about your phone and in the few tabs, you understand your pricing, and you understand your car options. And then we schedule it the for you to pick it up and the term of the of the subscription is currently mostly two years, but we're also working on making that a bit flexible for people, and so we really it's also inclusive of everything you need. So we think that kind of an interesting way to think about getting your hands on car. So we, of course, those powered by is products the mobile app experience etcetera. So that's a big part of what we're doing. And then we come to what you can do when you actually get your hands on a car. And of course, the car the device on wheels. And so everything is connected through a car cloud, and you have your phone and using your phone that we have an out where you to do everything from, you know, start your car and get it warmed up in the winter before you have to be in a to actually share the car with let's say a friend or family member when you're out of town through the convenience of the phone. So we're really pushing the envelope on what are the possibilities of using cars of simplifying really lowing the friction when you onto to business with us. I mean, those are the principal areas where were focused from a to the shin of the consumer experience standpoint. Now the. Other end of it. What people typically called IT, which I have essentially, rebranded as enterprise products covers a ton of things everything from how we may factor produced cars to the design and development of those cars before they're actually available to consumers to also how we work as employees. We've got tens of thousands of points across lobe, they need to reproductive. They need to collaborate. And so the ton of software there that's required as well. And so my thought coming into cars has been why do we work in such a innovative agile way for the things we'd be externally and then work in a slower pace and more legacy way, internally that doesn't make sense. So I said the same Bishen for software development and products, whether they're internal facing, let's let's call that enterprise or their external facing called that consumer very. Interesting. And I'm curious, even as you you were describing this you mentioned Spotify as an analogy to some of what you're doing here. You talked about the move to product as I'm hearing you talk you talk about this. I know that you've been with the company for two years, and this is your first in the auto industry after time Spence it a number of leading digital organizations from AL in its heyday to audible to yacht who to Amazon you've had product responsibilities previously as well. And I'm curious to what extent is it been useful to be an outsider coming in in sort of redefining things perhaps drawing analogies from your past experiences in ways that a veteran of the industry wouldn't be as well to do. I think it's the number one responsibility of of teeth officer somebody in that kind of role is essentially to provide fresh external thinking and to a reimagined the company for for today. And so the first thing I do coming in from the outside is ask the question. What would Abbas on do? I did that in my first two weeks when I entered McDonald's and put something on the table there within a month of what I thought that could look like and it went through a similar exercise here. Bubba cars with the board of directors, and it's not to say that Amazon will directly compete when McDonald's or Volvo cars, but it is to say that we need to really set a very high bar for how we think about what our businesses about. What's the nature of the product and the service, and how do we make money from that? And we can either Bill. Incrementally from what we're doing have been doing project aids, but was been around since nineteen twenty seven, and so it's a very injuring company, and there's a lot of good in that at the same time, it's entirely different to work backward. From what good looks like. So first thing order businesses to divine. What good looks like then you understand the MVP that you need to go fill and make happen once global company has clarity on what good looks like it has the resources and can make the bull moose that needs to make whether those are we were gonna they sins or partnerships or different capital commitments alignment with the board. Excetera retraining people bring in you talent all those elements of what people call transformation those become not easy to do. But you can actually put a plan together to move towards towards that higher Bishen. So that's the way it's. It. That you can really build momentum
