Volcanoes of Life
"Hey welcome to stuff to blow your mind. My name is Robert Lamb, and I'm Joe McCormack in today, we're going to be talking about something that I've been thinking about doing an episode on for a while ever since I read an article while back that really interested me, and that is the surprising and kind of counterintuitive link that has been proposed by many geologists now between life as we know it. It on earth and the fires of Mount Doom, specifically, the the most violent and scary of geologic processes like volcanic eruptions on the movement of tectonic plates. Yeah. This is a great topic to get into. We kind of had a I guess a preamble to this a couple of episodes ago when we were talking about eggs and we talked about the volcano birds and the idea of a volcano being seeming. Almost. Paradoxically to be something that can nourish. As opposed to something. That's just a purely destructive force. Oh, I. didn't think about that comparison at all. But yeah, the the way that the volcanic sand babysits the egg for for the megapode so that it can just run off and do its own thing. Yeah. Raised by a volcano. But so I thought a great place to start here might be with a brief reading from volusia. It is a famous old norse epic poem from the collection that is known as the Poetic Edda. Now, this is a synonymous work. The author is unknown, but the volusia tells the story of the norse Gods culminating in their destruction in the fiery doom of Ragnarok can I'm just GonNa read a couple of Quad trains here. In Anger Smites, the water of the earth forth from their homes must all men flee nine paces fares the son of Jurgen and slain by the serpent fearless. He sinks the Sun. Turns Black Earth sinks in the see the hot stores down from heaven or world fierce gross. The steam and the life feeding flame till fire leaps high about heaven, itself Nice and one fun thing about this poem. It's bit of Tolkien Trivia Robert Tell me if you've heard this before, but the name of the wizard Gandalf that first appeared in Tolkien's. Tolkien's the Hobbit and then of course, the best character in Lord of the Rings, the name of Gandalf comes from the Veloce token, actually borrowed the name from a section known as the tally of the dwarves from this epic poem. Originally, he was going to apply it to the character in the Hobbit, who became thorn oaken shield the leader of the Dwarf Party. But then he decided later on that, it made more sense to apply the name of Gandalf. The wizard. I think because again, Dal means something like magic staff l.. and. I think he made the right choice like, Gandalf. That makes more sense for the wizard than for Thorin. Think. So but cool thing that happens in this poem sort of part of the RAGNAROK. Myth is that there is a rebirth that follows this fiery doom know after the fire leaps high heaven and the Kingdom of the Gods is destroyed. Earth is not just left in cinders instead, there is a renewal from the fire and the author writes now do I see the earth new Rizal Green from the waves again, the cataracts fall and the Eagle flies and And Fish, he catches beneath the cliffs. So there's this great link between Fiery Cataclysm and rebirth and renewal of life in norse mythology, and and of course, you know these are symbolic elements. I'm not suggesting that they had some kind of scientific insight with this is something that I think is taken as a metaphor largely about human life itself, but coincidentally, it ends up kind of ringing true with things. We're finding out about geology and nature. Well, it's something you see in a lot of different mythological cycles, right I. mean you see it in Hindu mythology? In. Various. American mythologies. Thinking about. Meslin. South America in particular society that things will rise things will fall that there will be cataclysm that whole world will be destroyed, but new worlds will rise out of them and have risen out of them before. Yeah. I was thinking about themes of fiery eruption in the greening of the earth together or sort of a creator destroyer duality. One that came to my mind that that I thought, you might know something about because I know I've heard you talk about Hawaiian mythology before was the Palay myth. Yeah. Yeah. The Hawaiian got his Palay is an interesting example, a deity of fire and Volkan Ism I was reading a book titled Pay Volcano Goddess. Goddess of Hawaii by H are low nemo, and he points out that when Polynesian voyagers I arrived in Hawaii, they brought their gods with

It's a gradual process would start looking at very very narrow and and local features as we called them. And as you basically at more and more of these layers, you will try to explain the whole cat by means of its individual pieces. If you want by assembling, basically progress to more and more people layers in over network. So if we were to take a matrix that was a ten by ten matrix. And it just had ones and zeroes in it you, and I would be able to identify. Hey, look in the upper right hand corner of that ten by ten matrix. There's a bunch of ones up there. And and we could agree on that. We could say look there happens to be a lot of ones up in that right hand corner in what this conflusion system of finding. Edges or finding circles is doing is very similar. It's just doing that at a deeper more complex way where computer can say, you know, much like you, and I could could with our basic analysis could say there's a bunch of ones in the upper right hand corner. A computer could say this collection of pixels in this space over here. The biggest families went now that's at the animal level, but in the cultural where we are, it's not the biggest families win. Another is the most offspring you have, but your ideas and your influence. So, but the competition is going on all the time. With ideas. Let's let's take our cool insight because the age of information, if you will, well, your leverage, but, but even but way back. Okay, let's the birther Christianity. Christianity was born out of a Jewish cult who followed Jesus of Nazareth, but mainly propagated are largely by Saint Paul Jewish also, but never met Jesus. All right, this little group formed in the early Roman empire. It had its followers, but there's also other calls including the cult of Mithras another teacher out of the midwest. None of us the Middle East and none of us think about mattress now. But these to compete Noida at myth or another a teacher who had another worldview, not unlike. Like Jesus during the same time as yes, it parallel. So now the emperor Constantine, we're not talking the air three, thirty three when he the Roman empire which had been persecuting the Christians, persecuting them. Tossing them to the lions, but now he converted to become a Christian, but he fought the forces of the Persians who were following the cult of bitterness and he, he won anyway, he and Christianity. This persecuted cult became the dominant religion, and that gave birth to what has become the new Rome. That's for the Vatican instead of Julius Caesar, you have the pope. Okay, then you have the eastern shirt, so, okay, there's a Darwinian struggle of ideas. Now we come forward another. Thirteen hundred years, twelve, thirteen hundred years. The Italian Renaissance now the birth of science and it had to compete against the church. Okay. So that kind of now today where you and I are talking about things, we have to compete against reductive, materialism, physical ISM, which dominates our scientists and our academics, and it's the opinion of eat. So the operate in America in New York or wherever this dominant paradigm that says, a lot of the stuff you are. I are into never hap- said my case. You know telepathy there is no telepathy the these paranormal powers, they don't exist. It's in our mind. We imagine this stuff, but I mean, while you have all this meditation research going on and. Sneaking in into this physical ISM. This materialistic environment comes like a Trojan horse. This new insight into mind, over matter, let's say and how meditation can change your brain. So again, competition, so okay..

"Podcast. Before the break I was talking about the commentary for is area chapter fifty versus four through nine a. and talking specifically about that, that part of being a profit that involves listening so that you know what God wants you to say to the people that you are called to prophesy to right. You have to listen. You have to know what you are called to say. And so the, whether you whatever that translation is, whether it's the tongue of teacher or one who has been taught either way the the listening part is just as important so that you can speak. And it's so important, especially because the the prophet is being given words of comfort words of strength to give to those who are in circumstances that are difficult. And I know for my own experience, I, I want to be able to say the right things in those situation. I want to be. Able to to say the words that will bring the most comfort. And this is an area in my ministry where I have always always worried. I don't know if I've talked about it too much on this podcast. Maybe I have a apologize if I have. I tend to be a perfectionist or I tend to worry that I'm not doing things correctly so that can that can really hold me back, right? If I'm worried that I'm not going to do something correctly. I don't even want to attempt it. And so I know when I was doing my Chaplaincy training the first week or so was really hard to even go into those rooms because what if I said something just so horrible that you know against putting way too much giving myself way too much power. What if I said something so horrible that I just ruin someone's whole life or, you know, took away their faith in God or what? Whatever. For some reason, my brain never goes the other way will what, if you say just the right thing that is exactly what they need to hear, and that is what to me is really jumping out of these verses this these verses that. Morning by morning, God weakens might year to hear what I need to hear so that I can share that with others. I need to internalize that I need to. Yep, put that into my consciousness so that it becomes a part of me so that I have more confidence because it's not me who speaking, it's God. It's God's word right if I just speak what I know and what I believe, then that is God's word speaking through me and worry less about being right or doing things right, or being perfect. So that's really what I'm getting out of this, which I appreciate so moving on through the commentary, God opens the servant's ear to prepare him to learn to speak. And this is an ongoing process. It's not a one time experience because and that's where we see that morning by morning and happens day after day that God wakened us to here. So. So we need to be lifelong learners. We need to be life long listeners in got to God's word because we're going to hear it differently. We're going to hear God differently depending on what's going on in our own lives. How we've changed as people in our own lives are our faith goes through cycles and Volusia and changes, and all of those things. All of the all of the defining aspects of our life, all of those even tiny details of our lives, influence how we hear God's word and so we have to, we have to constantly be listening. We have to constantly be listening for God's word and and learning about God's word and knowing what God's word is telling us so that we can then have the tongue of teacher..
