Don't fuck with those people what they need to find ways to have power. They can't physically conquer our bodies. So they have to conquer our minds like this guy that ran the nexium Keith Rainier rears his name. Dude everything he says was a hunter nonsense. You hear him talking to these girls and he's like we'll pain and suffering. Those are two completely different things and they're like, he that was my senior quote actually. Nothing. That's nonsense. He's insane. So. In order for creativity to happen, authenticity has to be congruent and they'd be like. To rearrange the things you think could happen for what will and you're like I don't hear you. I will say for everybody clowning on the women that were beguiled by that and hypnotize. We've all done that we've all we all did this like in high school or college where some idiot was just using big words in an order you had never heard before and making eye contact with you and you bought it you know and you're like, yeah, that sounds genius like watching a David. No, you didn't the fucking did it no one could corroborate that claim because if you invented it, no one else knows it. So no one else can check your math to make sure it's real ma'am nurture shit. That's like that's like I learned Klingon. No, you didn't. Know. You like also was the math we had not working for him. He was like. Four, he's like I don't see. I don't think we need. Honestly there's too. So now there's four to fix this. Is Making Shit Up, and these people are like. Amazing. Here's what I'll say because the people that were so beguiled by him and that fell for it I do think we don't talk enough about. How cults are good because they keep crazy people off the streets. Do you think like the girl walks in and he's like. The mackerel that crazy she's in. Insane. I'm kind of obsessed with it though, but he goes on. So. Why do you? Why do you like art and she starts crying? Okay. This girl needs to be in an attic in Albany away from the rest of us this bitch because if she was not, she would be masks in a trader. Back Ryan. quit a second hold on what's happening but also this is kind of like. Hard to explain. Everything was also on camera. So. You have to understand what the documentary is being made. Everyone knows they're on camera and they're also all kind of performing several ones like I used to be an actress like, no, you're still an actress you're recording your colts life like you're acting you're on a reality, show the report everything like we just need to be authentic. Well, why are you on camera all the time on camera during like silk scarves all like I just want to be able to find validation without needing anything from anyone it's like well, then why do you seven cameras around you at a? Why do you have to film everything? You do it's truly just A. Room of like fifty people talking about what they're gonNA do in the future. So you never do any nothing they just sit in the house. Would the weirdest thing about a sex cult be the fact that they're playing volleyball? Book this fall like the sex call the branding. Everyone's got a normal. That's what we do. This is Hollywood. This is like every time we go on in we do those things volleyball. It's such. So elitist that people think volleyball's weird because I lived in Virginia we love volleyball is. We played it all the time. It's very fun I was on the volleyball team, the recent that Hollywood people and like twitter elites are are so confounded by the volleyball is because it's just a middle America sport it's not if it was like yoga citing or. Go Ice Skating. Like soul cycle or spinning or pilates they'd be like, wait this cultist genius all things that are in. Sports. Fresh update on "volleyball" discussed on The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
"Look, this is great news all around as a die hard sports fan like I'm imagining many of you are this is what we want to see. If the lead commissioner caved to the pressure. That's not good. But if they did their work, they consulted with scientists and the public health officials and created systems to keep the athletes and staff safe and sound. Well. All right let's get to work. I don't know about you but I've actually found the NBA and NFL experience without fans to be a great experience right you're focused on the work product and I'm down with that the NBA. I don't even really notice the lack of fans anymore the NFL still little bit weird. The huge empty stadiums I'm getting used to it. It's taking a little bit time baseball. I. Don't know it's been hard for me to connect with it but maybe that's because my red sox are awful beyond awful pitiful. Anyway there's something magical about college sports. I will be the first to admit growing up in the Boston area. There wasn't really a huge college sports component there. It's all pro sports I always thought of college sports as I was growing up as a minor leagues to the pros and therefore less important in my world view the pro game was the pinnacle and everything else was just a pathway. But really this is the wrong lens to look through. The perspective change for me when I was in my late twenty, I travelled to England to watch a few premier league soccer games. I saw a game arsenal and another at Chelsea and these were experiences I had never had in sports. The fans were different the stadium experience with different the vibe was different. I remember returning from that trip and going back to work, which is a C. N.. N.'s sports illustrated the time and telling anyone who would listen Oh. My Gosh, I feel like a different sports fan with different expectations like this experience was incredible and one of my coworkers said to me well, have you ever been to a football game at Uga Note. Another said, have you ever been a game of Tennessee and there's when Payton was huge? And then my boss in Michigan Grad was like dude into the big house No. It wasn't until I started experiencing these college sports cathedrals realized mine was skewed perspective that the real passion and enthusiasm and maniacal fandom was in college sports that mu-ming of one hundred and six thousand people on a Saturday in the fall chanting so loud. You felt like it was your chest was compressing. And it's not just football. Most of the athletes in college aren't on the professional athlete path they play water polo and volleyball and tennis for the pure love of the game and competition. That's the magic you want from sports. As my journey has continued and I've interviewed associate athletic directors from Ohio State and purdue, and Michigan and Tim Duncan from University of New Orleans. You realize how much goes into operating a department representing sometimes thirty or more teams not just one the effort and coordination. It takes to maximize the experience of thousands of student athletes across the department and draw fans not just a football saturdays but to mid week soccer games and track and field and baseball. The challenge is real and it's exciting. I'm in awe for that reason I watch and listen and learn from those friends I have created in college athletics to better understand their world. One of my good friends in the industry this week's guest is crisscrossing Penn State Assistant Athletic Director for marketing who is back at work preparing for fall sports instead of tweeting about brownies and whether or not hot dogs sandwiches for those who know Chris and follow him on twitter. That's the kind of conversation engaged hot and it's actually a lot of fun. So Chris is a great follow but more than I, we're GonNa talk about some real details in sports marketing and college athletics starting now here's Chris. Hey, Chris what's happening today? What's going on? Good to be here? Yeah I really appreciate you coming on. It's always cool talking to somebody in college athletics because it's a really cool subculture of the sports industry. It's like an unique little segment that I wanNA talk so much about and I really appreciate you coming on because your experience and multiple levels of college athletics is really cool. So thanks for being here. You're welcome I'm looking forward to dive into this.

Seattle - Washington Student Athletes Are Finding Ways To Make Fall Sports Happen
"With high school fall sports postponed until next spring in the state of Washington, Would you be willing to temporarily move your child to Idaho or Montana? Was Bill Schwartz says Some families are exploring their options. 17 states, including Washington, had pushed back football, volleyball, cross country and soccer seasons until February. Dr. Caress Unni Hoff with the National Federation of State High School Associations is hearing that some families might move their Children in neighboring states, which are allowing competition so that their son or daughter could lay a false sport in a more timely fashion. So we're starting to see some responses to state decisions that are presented some challenges. The state of Idaho is one of 37 with modified fall seasons, and several schools are already practicing and playing games. And as we get started with school games, which mostly are starting this weekend, you know for the vast majority of our schools. Pretty exciting time for Ty Jones, executive director of the Idaho High School Activities Association, tells me his office is getting more enquiries than previous years from parents in Washington state. But Jones says Cove in 19 is not an acceptable hardship reason for transfer. A lot of our schools have a really tough time looking at kids coming in from other Some other states. We're moving for only for athletic reasons. Colton Washington has been allowed to coop with nearby Genesee, Idaho to play is one high school team this fall. Doctor caress Une Hoff warns against the kneejerk decision. Especially because so few young people are good enough to play at the next level. The great great majority of high school student athletes will not going to play in college and will not interest in scholarship. For a family decision to be made right now, at this time that they would choose to move simply too and be involved in high school sports. We hope that there's complete consideration of everything that comes into play there. The Hoff says It's crucial high school coaches in Washington state. Stay engaged with her athletes this fall. Make sure they get proper exercise plenty of sleep and eat right. They are all essential elements of playing games in the

Chris Korfist on New Advances in Sprint Training
"Christi Man it's good to have you back. I know I think you have a story about you. You are Carlos now right aren't you writing like a kick bike around and you're getting a hamstring workout what's going on with that? Yeah. So we have three cars which in most families is plenty But my daughter has taken a car up to Minnesota and she usually works during the day. She's GonNa go to Iowa the. Sun's. Going to be a junior but he said his license since December and he has volleyball every day. And then tournament sound the weekend, which I don't know is legal or not these this day and age. But basically, I'm a fifty one year old person that doesn't have a car I have a licensed but most my days and evenings I am Carlos. So. A couple of years ago more than a couple years ago I saw Franz Basch was playing around with the kick bike and John Prior. told me about it so. I've become the kick bike master of Chicago I am the. Middle aged guys zooming around on a red kicked bike. My record so far is fourteen miles. which. Is Pretty good on a kick bike I did it in forty minutes but I. Go Grocery shopping go pick up Britos things like that. Throw in my backpack and I kicked bike around the western suburbs of Chicago, which it may look easy. But kick biking is much harder than riding a bicycle It's your one leg is peddling through. So there's a ton of hamstring involved in the other leg. It's like in this isometric squad before. So. He can get low enough to get your foot on the ground. So. That's been my summer so far kicked. biking around trying to get food or go get whatever I need. I. It's awkward like I go to the wine shop, which isn't too far away but we're a backpack in my backpack I got a bottle of wine in a Burrito like. This is Kinda messed up. Usually, it's like a fourteen year old something like that but it's not often you see a fifty one year old how ask you do you? Do you take that thing through timing gates? How fast is that thing go all well, I have these hotshots because sometimes I just go out for the exercise and there's all these trails nearby and you got these hotshot bikers with all their gear on. And I always like to wear street clothes just to make them feel bad and zoomed by the bikers. So I guess I can go fourteen sixteen miles an hour when I get it moving. That's that's not too bad for non motorized. Yeah. But that's a that's a that's a short burst hold that for awhile. You tired really fast. Yeah I was just GonNa say this is a good segue innocent things that you've been some recent sprint ideas and human locomotion ideas but like the spiralling nature things, right like you got one leg, that's has one job and the other leg has the other job and I know you've been talking about the Lila Somme symmetrical stop there said you feel do you feel like you get a little like spiraling action or how long do you go on one leg before you switch to the other see don't like start running circles or do you care does it Usually I do just because I get bored I counted ten so I do ten pedals But then sometimes I go let's see how many I can do on this leg before my. My metric leg, the leg that's on the machine or bike completely is burning and then I'll switch so. Something like that, and I'm usually listening to a podcast. So I'm doing that too. So I'm. To me, there's nothing worse than doing aerobic work I. Think it's just mind numbing. So between going fast and kick by listening to a podcast and. Worrying about crashing in which legs burning word that usually is enough to keep my mind off the fact that I'm kicked biking and it does get to pissed at my children for taking all the cars and using the a kick bite. I think life is interesting. We don't have a car you know. It definitely I feel like there's always something to be learned I I I was Gonna say I will say as I've gotten older too I. I definitely appreciate having a good aerobic system but finding creative ways to do it not just running and in one direction and all that type of thing. So I did your bear crawl push saying this morning. Nice and that's hard it. Oh Yeah. No, it's super hard. It gets it gets tough like it's it gets logarithmic. You know like one, two, three, four whatever. But then he's getting five, six seven I need to come up with a way to make that more like 'cause everyone's GonNa get stuck at like eight you know or you can just rest the really longtime. Yeah. It I thought it would be easier than it actually was. Yeah, for me. I would do if it was me and someone else doing push ups and it was like you could either do two competitions. One would be just how many push ups can you do in two? Let's do that crawl thing. I would do way at the crawl thing because I get to rest and I'm way better read and it gives me a chance to like the take a break and I've rule more aerobic and all that the last stick. So I I think I, just kind of a cheater way for me to make it look like I'm a little stronger, my body or something I don't know. I feel like it's got I was thinking. It's like you do get the gait cycle in between every bilateral. So I agree I felt that same thing I you know I think the crawling huge is everyone's lack down. And we're lucky because we have gym center basements but still you start cranking off pushups just for something to do and. You can it gets a little numbing after a while and you can feel the impact that? Are Great. I crank off one hundred fifty push-ups but I'm not walking as well in my shoulder kinda hurts now. What am I really doing here is it really important to do that many push ups or is it more important that I feel pretty good after I do the exercise? Yeah. I was doing one of the last traditional strength programs I down for a while and ever since all the lockdown stuff and the weight rooms have been a little more sparse. I didn't have a barbell for quite a while, but one of the last programs that I was doing was just easy strength just two sets of five everyday basically three sets of three and I was Barbell benching every day and I haven't Jack, yeah I'm getting older but I haven't I haven't jacked my shoulder up that bad in a long time like my left shoulder was dying after awhile and every time I do those crawls like it's just like it's all good. You know you just a way to mitigate the same stress and you're back in your shoulder blades being pinned. You know, of course too

COVID-19 impacting school sports
"So what's next for college football, volleyball, basketball and soccer players who've been allowed to condition on campus but can't play? Arizona State University athletic director Ray Anderson says, will be up to the individual schools to decide the game plan. We're not driven by lawyers who say well will relieve you of liability. That's not what floats the boat in this conference, so we have responsibilities and accountability. No live football games means millions in lost television revenue. Anderson says. No doubt there will be short term financial pain. But when it comes to Corona virus and People's Health University of Oregon president Shill perhaps summed it up the best When we're on the field, we're going to compete as hard as we can with each other, But we were back in our offices and thinking about you know what we care about Most We're
The Last Serve with Courtney
"Enjoyed episode gray story very relatable unless you to it. Though. The question that everyone that comes on as when you're younger than athlete would like bigger to the goals you underachieve. Oh God as an athlete I actually wanted to be my first athletic dream wants to be a professional basketball player. So I guess that's where it started is that was the first sport that I really played. And it that quickly died. After a while was like, you know what now got Bergdahl kind of fascinated found volleyball luckily. Yeah. I had a poster of Lisa Leslie on the back of my bedroom door. Measure myself against our. Be, like that one day. Lead the. Though at least leisurely. So when you kind of said, we're doing basketball. Then how do you kind of land up on wall kind of thing that was? A good place for you. Volleyball, why is the last sport that I tried like the last one I picked up and I've been I was always playing. As a kid I was just always I, think of a lot of athletes say that like I just play it every and volleyball was lost when I picked up his all my friends are playing it and I went to a camp at our high school, Our Future High School put on with them and I. I. Hated it. Just because was bad and I hate big batted things it just makes me so angry. And I just kind of stuck with it because all of my best friends were playing and it was really fun to play with them. So it was like I'm sure I'll like it. You know when I start getting better and I like hanging out then so stick with it and just did a job middle school along with everything else that I could play and I, just live London it gets so much fun. And when you start to get a little bit good, it was just I think we've no others or I didn't feel anger sport but I played before when I started to get good I just wanted to keep getting better on I. Definitely felt that was all. Yeah and then just think what I was in high school. Coaches. OCD recruiting letters, and found out. That was the thing I could do you know playing college now? It's like, okay I guess I'll do that. And Going with that same process. Started, getting good. How did you? Become good with was whether jet practice or you redoing the outside of just the usual everyday stuff. A little bit of both I mean I think it really helps like I always tell players that I'm coaching. I was not good until I was like it senior sixteen like even I started playing when I was twelve terrible until I was almost in high school. I think a lot of it when I turned I was a freshman in high school. So it's like fourteen fifteen years old in a big game changer was that summer I played a lot of volleyball because then middle school I played every sport. So I didn't really dedicate that much time I played club but. You know I'm not very, very good club not for a very good team. The practice wasn't very intense, and then that summer before freshman year when I decided I wanted to play in high school. I switched clubs went to NATO's Houston. Was a better had had give reputation at the time played was in the gym at all the open gyms, all the clinics they had. At least twice a week ever all summer long and I grew like four inches in like almost like less than six months I grew so much and. I. Think the biggest improvement was. By jump, I could actually jump after all of that playing at all jumping off the heading and I could finally. Serve consistently and served. Well, I was stronger I was in middle school I would I hated surfing. I just got so mad because I was so inconsistent I would actually. Do. Push ups in my room every night when I was like thirteen and fourteen seventh and eighth grade I served improve. But then I was in the gym so much that summer after middle school and it made such a big difference. I think here in your journey, just how you were determined to get better you like I'm not gonNA. Anyone be. Yeah and just be like I'm not going to be bad at this. This is ridiculous like I'm not I'm not going to be done at this. This is stupid. Like

And I'm Neil, Patel, and today we are going to talk about how the world has shifted to remote, and how you can actually make your marketing work in a remote world, so with Corona virus, and right now we're actually in the second wave of things were in many states and I think we're still the first wave in the US. Technically second going down. It's going back up. Because nobody really. We didn't really get past the first we sucked so bad got. I shouldn't be saying that on air, but we have no idea what we're doing. Is just goes right back up so I still think one of the first we'll see and with many other countries right? There were slowing down like. And parts of Europe, and now they're picking back up. But when you look the coronavirus and everything that's happened, it's caused a lot of us to go remote. And we have no choice. I make sense. It's better to be safe than sorry, but less people are working in offices. What's funny as they're learning how to work efficiently at home as well, the real question now is though how do you manage your marketing team in your marketing efforts working remote, and making sure that you're generating a positive roi in things are getting done enough vicious manner, and that's what we wanted to cover today. So the first thing I'll say round. This is that the adjustment period was really difficult for the people on the separate teams that have really they've never worked. Oh my God what's going to happen? Do we need these remote guides? You know what we do and then when you realize after the initial shock, is that not a lot changes? And then you realize also that for the most part a lot of people that used to work all the time. They realize they can just work more efficiently. Need to work as many hours right so I. WanNa give a couple practical things, and then we can kind of bounce back and forth on this, but one thing we do on the. The educational product that we've run is to maintain efficiency. We actually do a daily stand up for about fifteen minutes on its live because we're spending dollars on it, so we WANNA make sure that there's a sense of urgency and we're communicating quickly, and if there's an issue, we nip it in the bud, so it's every Tuesday through Friday, so it's technically it's not daily, but we go for about ten to fifteen minutes or so some has a Michael for thirty minutes, and then we'll solve issues. Kinda right than in there, and then the other thing is for the quick flow team. The software team the way we do our daily. Stand up. It's just what we do yesterday. What do. Do we do today. Here's our feeling any blockers that we have in this just strictly text based right, so it's acing. Chris the differences. The other one is synchronous so depending on the state of the projects. HOW HIGH STAKES THEY ARE! You Might WanNa say okay, once increase or ones AC Griss, but what we found is that the stand ups work, and then I'll save for two single rain team. We don't do daily. Stand up anymore. It's a weekly stand up because we have a weekly huddle where we go over numbers, and then Wednesday is a weekly standards like how you're feeling what you do. Volleyball what he played for the weekend and then Friday. We have a belt meaning which. which is more of a cultural thing where I asked Neal was the best party or week professionally, personally who you nominate for the WWe belt, so that type of stuff so what I'm getting at really here is you have to make sure that have you communicate that you are communicating at? It's probably more frequent because you're not around the office anymore to tap someone on the shoulders anymore. So on our end we do a few different things, so the first thing we end up doing. Is We take our tasks? Like what are people doing on a regular basis and you WanNa? Make sure they're broken down into weekly tasks, and then from weekly you WanNa break them down into daily. People need to create their own checklist. Keep themselves held accountable, and it makes it much easier for them to know all right today I need to accomplish all of these things to try to hit my goals, so that allows them to stay on track with what they need to do on a regular basis with typically their daily job duties. Now in general, whether you're working from home or the office or whether there's coronavirus kicking strong, or it's not as a business as a marketing department. You WanNa constantly grow no matter what the economic situation is. One thing that we like doing is on top of years your daily tasks. We put people in different groups. And it changes week over week, and it's just random is and what we'll do is every Monday will put people in groups of threes. Every Monday people submit their ideas on different ways that they they can help grow our traffic or conversion scorer sales in other words any way to grow the business by Tuesday each team picks their idea by Wednesday in needs to be launched by Friday. We go over the results of the tests. Sometimes you don't get enough data and you'll know about the results in another week. Week or two, and that's fine, but you want him so small. You know these tests that you can end up doing on a regular basis, and you can do really frequently if they're too complex. That means test is too big, and you need a break down. We have this whole concept of paper cuts in business. There's not one thing that's GonNa. End Up, really causing your business to grow in skyrocket, but if you do a lot of little things, right correctly over time what you'll find is, it'll blow up.

"School Association has altered its return to play rules. And if you read between the lines here, it doesn't bode well for athletics in the fall. How you get ready for a football season with no contact in practice was something that was not explained. Maybe that'll change in a month. But I wouldn't hang my hat on watching high school football this fall. I can't even just It's hard a lot of the people that I've talked to today, coaches and AIDS. "Volleyball last year. At the high school level club level four was it from they're doing it with fishing as well. Trap shooting has been a huge success in the state who were some of the barriers volleyball to get off the ground. When you look realistically to me, it seems simplistic, but I know there's always more to it than you think. Well, yeah. And and you know, I'm just a dumb jock Soldano either. I mean, it seems pretty basic to me relative to this idea of already got gyms, and we've already got Nance, and we've already got volleyball's pretty low cost the cost to the the barriers to entry a pretty small. I think there's the potential for some conflict, you know, being a spring sport. Maybe with some other spring sports. But again, we're talking about being indoors in a gym. And and you know, if you just tell me eighty percent of the kids were not going to play sports at least last year. I th that what's one of the questions, you know, if you weren't playing volleyball would you be out for sport and eighty percent were saying, no. And so I get it. Maybe the baseball team's gotta practice one day when it's weird. But is that should that happen at the expense of kids coming in? And if we have to work with another team to find a time to train, I'm sure everyone's amenable to that. But anyway, I just think you know, facilities one that that would come up. I would imagine you know, they gotta train somewhere. And then, you know, the cost like we see it. But so far the. Is what was saying? We had thirty six teams so far that are registered for this year. I think there's another four six or eight teams that are looming from other parts of the state that we might be in the low forties by the time registration closes. Those are teams that are found enough money to register to invest their own time and money to to be ready to play. So it seems like I get it those barriers, but they're not they don't seem instrumental sentence. Yeah. I I mean, and if that if that's the hill, we're dying on that. It seems like there must be something else. Because those those two things in particular just don't seem like, they're they can be the be all and end all of crushing a sport. That's in in in twelve months as sport as well. It see we've got a thousand participants or so anyway, I I don't know. I don't know enough to know what you pick up on that. Well, the there's been pushback that the Hewish said. The process itself in Minnesota high school league is daunting. Yeah. You've got sick do that by design to make you're going to be because we don't want to just for a year. They want you for the long haul. That's right. And so it it shouldn't be easy on the other side of that coin. No, it seems like volleyball just as in a unique position and the the regions in voting for or against whether this should move forward to the Representative assembly. It seems to me looking at it from the points of view, the Hugh as already discussed it's very difficult to vote. No because for number one the Minnesota state high school leagues mission is to create opportunity for kids Esser mission. Nasa mission statement and one of their belief statements is that. Well, I I can it that students should have equal opportunity to participate. Yep. Or any activity in the school? Okay. Now sitting there are unique. Yes for volleyball unique thing about that. Is it puts everybody in a funny place because volleyball is in the school, not because generally speaking, it's about the girls that don't get to play in a sport..

"Seven three four I don't care. How old you are care? What gender you are. I don't care where you are on your fitness level or your life like show up, and you're gonna learn something new. Welcome to KCBS in that discussion of one of the topics making news this these KCBS indepth. Welcome to KCBS in-depth reporter, Holly Kwan when you think of sports next to surfing, you think beach volleyball, it's big at the Olympics. But now a bay area gold medalist is trying to make it more than just an every four years, spectator sport. Champions Kerri Walsh Jennings grew up in the south bay went to Stanford won three golds at the Olympics. Now, she's launching them vicious project to disrupt the traditional pro volleyball circuit by creating a hybrid competition slash music festival slash food truck slash health and wellness expo, and it's not just for athletes or weekend. Warriors. It's for the rest of us mere mortals, and it's after you buy a stadium in San Jose the last weekend in September. So I'm looking at this, and this will notion of disruption. Yes, is is intriguing because because it sounds like at least on my part. It sounds like you're trying to make things better. We are. And in what way I mean? How do you? How do you take on something as big as the establishment? Oh, how well, you know. It's a relative term because the establishment that we're taking on. We're not even taking them on. It's just like we see avoid and lack an opportunity to create something new, and we are going to innovate and in the process were disrupting. So what we're talking about is beach volleyball, the sport of beach volleyball, and by bought large is beautifully powerfully healthy. We are the number one sport for girls. Eight eight to eighteen and the numbers keep increasing and the grassroots efforts NCWA collegiate programs. These are all gang busters, however at the top of the pyramid. The professional side of the sport is dying and his dying slowly and therefore team USA that you directory that we've been kicking. For the past twenty years. We're going down because every professional right now, they train they hustle like they're professionals, but they're getting paid like hobbyists the number one player in the in the country last year made thirty thousand dollars we pay to travel to train for lodging. So that's number one player. So imagine what five through ten or making or ten below. So the sport is dying and with p fourteen forty is doing were repackaging. And we presenting the way the sports brought to market we're bringing in other elements, like health awareness, personal development and live entertainment because we want to bring net new boss to the game. The sport itself is perfect, but beach volleyball fans don't wanna pay to show up, but the beach volleyball, he gets you you feel like it's been it's hugely popular every four year. Exactly. Well, that's the I love that. You said that. So right now, what's keeping a small, and it was really hard for me when I came across this realization is the Olympics were only relevant once every four years. We are the number one sport, volleyball and beach volleyball combined at the Olympic Games every summer, then one sport viewing. In attendance, it's early and then we go away because only the top players in the world are only chasing gold medals. So we need to do what p fourteen forty is doing is. We are creating the NBA ATP NHL NFL NFL type model where the athletes cut their teeth make their living on the tour itself and the Olympics is the icing on top. But if you're only you're only focused on a metal for years from now, the world's not gonna care until about three and a half years from now. So we need the three sixty five twenty four seven Ellis summer a beach volleyball, and creating there was a Bali volleyball tournament of beach volleyball tournament that was down here Darrow yet. A couple of years in a row ABC. Yes. Right. I remember going down there and covering it. A couple of years in a row, and it seemed really really popular. And it was it had a lot of people coming down there caused a huge amount of traffic. So I I find it hard to believe that there isn't a spectator interest. There's a huge spectator interest. It's just right now. The current situation domestically is that it's a beach volleyball property only. So you have to love beach by bought in order to show up. But when you show up on site, you're going to watch the best in the country. But usually you're gonna show up watch your favorite team in the leave. The thing that we're doing at p fourteen forty is that we are creating a festival experience. So you're gonna have so many offerings to choose from. If you have kids, we're gonna have a rock climbing wall. We're going have a kids zone. We're gonna kids court where they can play. We're gonna have a health and wellness village where you can learn from the experts that have about how you should be feeling yourself. We're gonna have a live podcast taping. With Tom Bill you of impact. So there's -education around mindfulness and mindset, and you can train like the athletes with the experts that we're going to have on hand, you recover like the athletes in a recovery row. You know? So we're adding these elements because you know, words, don't teach only experienced teachers in the one thing I get so often from kids from parents from athletes in their forties. Fifties there's like who. Who what is the go-to resource? Like, how do I do this life and keep a sending in life instead of feeling overburden overwhelmed, and we are creating that p fourteen forty you know, so we want to be the go-to ecosystem or resource center to have tangible experiences. So that you can therefore take what you've learned and go apply it to your life to live a better feeling life. Is it I I'm seeing two different things. Like number one, either bringing your kids like you said, you know, the kids can train they can get interested in it. But, but I I is it also getting people interested in like, you know, how people are running like half marathons now man, and so many more and a lot of them are women that are in their thirties and forties. Yeah. Doing that. Do you envision than trying to because nothing would make me happier than to be able to play beach volleyball? Keep thinking like, okay. It is like that. That train has left the station the hardest part. That's not true in live unless you think it is like how your mindset is so important in life. Okay. So our dear friends, the Snyder family, they invented the color run. You're probably familiar global initiative, and they wanted to get kids and families and communities moving together. And the way they did that they lowered the barrier to entry. You know, if you go if you set up for a ten K or an iron man, like it's gnarly, it feels like you have to be a certain level to show up and participate the color run gets rid of that. It's about fun. It's not moving. It's about community. That's what we're doing at fourteen forty. We are so inclusive. I don't care. How old you are? I don't care what gender you are. I don't care where you are in your fitness level or your life like show up, and you're gonna learn something new and you're going to get practical takeaways to go and implement in your life. But you know, it's just access is important people need to see it, and touch it and feel it my parents I grew up in Saratoga twenty minutes from Stanford University. They took me to Stanford games. I was a ball kid as viable games growing up that planted the seed in my head. That paved the way for my whole life. I ended up going to Stanford ten years later. You know, what his college scholarship I've been to five Olympics because of the seeds that were planted and so p fourteen forty is we literally want to be gardeners, and we want to plant the seeds for everyone across the board. We certainly want to cater to kids and the families about I don't care if you're single if you're ninety if you're married, whatever it is. You know, there's there's a lot to be had. We're going to have a great, you know, food experienced you gonna come and eat drink and enjoy because we want to have you have you celebrate the moment. They're only fourteen hundred forty minutes in a day. How are you mindfully living those minutes, and that's kind of the fundamental reason why we exist? It seems very holistic because not to be all, you know, L A B kind of mindset thing. But I know what a lot of people probably think that oh for sure this is science.

Same height or a little taller what do you need to, do to to to make yourself better than than those across the net at the same way I guess just be aware of everything and know where the center is gonna set the? Ball and just commit What's what's the most difficult thing about. Being a good blocker on their side I don't know just Difficult Give Walker is Oh. Baby just pressing Was? That, was. A question You know what's better getting a good. Killer or a Greek wine I like getting a good block All right good luck. To you this year thank you This is Mattie. Orrick junior Oh s., number six in, Mattie position, I, asked you? Your teammate this what's the what's the hardest? Thing about playing back, there Probably just like moving your feet and, like getting to every ball Mike like if you make a mistake you have. To, like get like. A great pass, next Exeter like, a lot, of, pressure sometimes? And watch a lot of football at all Yeah sometimes sometimes defensive back, if they could beat you gotta come right back in the same if you You? Gotta get right back up again so what always played that? Position, yeah so what what do you think what's the best way to prepare for a back. Row player Just like wraps and like keep like having teammates hit, really hard at us like you get? Like the experience for like better teams. And when you're when you're on? The. When the balls on the other? Side of the net how're you anticipate where you're gonna go Stain base and then you just have to like. Wait till they like get in the air because sometimes they like change their direction at the, last second you just had to like View enjoy the pressure of playing in that position he I actually like it a lot and what do you like better playing for coach robber, coach rich you can't hear I didn't play for, coach. Last year so All right well good luck to. You Users a, free amigos our freshman. Kenzi craftsman. Freshman, middle number twenty one Good how, about you what. Program How. Are. "And then eventually when they choose the fashion, they will become better that whatever they like to do. You know, my son is funny as we're talking about our kids right now. My son is fun is that he loves to go to do sports. Performance training could take her leave sport itself right now. So he's like, I don't know if I want to play basketball, but yet that I like on training with other nine year olds in the gym and kind of moving around like dynamic warm up and all that stuff like pulling sleds, there's no weights on the sled, but you know that type of movement he loves and I'm not my head going. This is really good. Good for you. With. Good. Yeah. Okay. So Marco, how, okay. You've got a you keep coming back to this word grit. How do you think about the concept of grit. I think. You know it's about knowing I, first of all, you need to know why you're doing something great per se. It's like a could be flagellation do it to yourself to our meal sale. That's not with us a grit. It's to me, it's knowing, you know where you're going with it. You know, for me was in I mentioned knowledge. I knew I wanted to learn something and I needed to. I had all these brick walls Bill in front of me, and I needed to go through them to get to that knowledge because it was the only way to get it so that that to me was was I know what I'm going, I know is going to be half, I know alive up sickles and I know I'm going to fold and I'm going to help myself again, but I will try my best to get that. And then when I get up, find something else. So I think I think that's that's great enough seen it expressed in different ways in other people, you know, I had this athletes. Volleyball player. She, she won the beach volleyball league in Italy. She was possibly the smallest player ever coach. She was tiny. She wasn't told, but she was the hardest working volleyball player. I ever worked with. And you know to this day, she still she coaching now she is fitter than athletes so that that great is there. She is not going to give up trying to be as good as she possibly can everyday. So. The way I visualize it is that okay, you, you know, you've got some talent, some skill, some abilities. Won't you shoot try to do is try to the best you can be and to be the best you can be. You go to apply yourself. You've got to have that drive, otherwise you will. You will regress so so great for me, this is is, is the ability to navigate up the continue pursuing things. Even if they look difficult or day might not come. Mody might fail eats about continuing. I would have never rent a working a few in ninety three. When I got my first degree, what is about working growth? I would have said I may be one day, and then here I am having worked into the butts of the world, so I, you never know what's next. But what you know is that if you work hard for something, something good will happen. Love it. Okay. What have you come to understand? Like what is the one or two things that I know? That's a big question, but what if you come to understand about humans getting better and you've come from sports science perspective, confirmed that exercise science. I'm sorry, exercise physiology perspective. Traveler of the world explorer. You've got a predisposition for grit. You've got this ability get over your skis, be step into a role that seems bigger than what you're capable of and you figure it out..

"Be brazil i wanna beat you know xyz i wanna i wanna i i wanna want to perform at my best which one is an you you don't have to pick one but is it be your best or kick their ass i think that you know because i'm not very result driven but i have the belief that i can win and so it's a fine line okay so let's play scenario okay how 'bout let's take world championships or olympics and you you barely contribute and you get gold scenario b you kick ass you're on fire pr's stats through the roof your running shop it's amazing to guys choke and you take a fourth and i don't wanna get i don't want you to get confused about like a selfishness to the team right right which one would you rather have there's probably other sneers could play yeah i probably have better like if we did it like it has an individual sport that would be an easier that way yeah because i know you're som just learned something about you is that you really consider of other people like you think about other people's wellbeing maybe above your own i don't know about you know i can i can be selfish as well but i've come to appreciate that we're better together and that was especially through my team sports and so now that i'm in beach volleyball it's a huge annoyance to me and i'm trying to break the mold of changing this collection of mavericks into more of a team minded you know operation and so that's what i'm trying to set out to do so i definitely thrive of contributing to something larger than just myself but it's hard for me to hear that scenario and be okay with my performance but other you know like so if you if you came back to me with golf i'm a golfer yeah i don't i really don't know what it is i don't know how to decipher the two or distinguish between the two because when i fail they're still a win what is your definition of failure if if i if i were to not make an olympic team or you know lose the game there's still more to learn through that experience and you know i think for me it was really important to sort of understand that when i'm operating at the outer edges of my bility and competing hard what i think about myself doesn't matter anymore because i have a job to do and once i sort of saw that like wow i'm not having to like overcome my mind i just don't need to think about myself because i'm much freedom in that i'm just competing yeah that's that's the gift of being completely absorbed in anything you do is you don't have to monitor yourself and evaluate if you're okay if not okay i am i doing is i thought worked no it doesn't work the machines with no no it's like everything is absorbed nearly everything majority of your resources are engaged with what you're doing and that's where you start to you know you hear about this own flow state the pocket musicians call it what percentage of the time did you spend in the pocket i think that i became pretty good at basically book marking the matches the competitive you know so you know especially started in product two thousand seven two thousand eight where i would literally go through the mental routine of okay i'm i'm i'm here to work and i'm tying my shoes them in the locker room and i'm your marking the next three hours i'm going all in on the current point in before we won the gold that year that was probably the most pure competitive months that i've ever been a part of because there was no expectation of winning.

"By time with twenty sixteen women's indoor and beach volleyball teams i've just smelt in seen and understood what it takes to be part of a quad a four year process it is rigorous and there is deep dedication required to be able to have a shot at making the team i mean it is flat out challenging in now imagine doing that successfully four time sixteen years not including the ten or twenty years prior to training just to get to the world stage and for him to still have that hunger to come back and to do it maybe one more final time let's see here so in this conversation we learn how reads done it i mean it's about passionate grit in perseverance and you know we discuss everything from how he struggled with confidence in early days of playing a cool is that to be one of the best in the world in having hindsight perspective about how to develop confidence and we get into that here and what it means to be clutch in why he loves putting himself on a regular basis in situations that test his capacities in there aren't many people who are able to call themselves four time olympian so i can't wait for you to learn from read in this conversation so with that let's jump right into this conversation with read pretty read what's up nava hear me too yeah this has been you know something i've watched from a distance as a someone who's appreciated been part of ali also is a treat to have you here awesome thanks yeah so first of all congratulations on four olympics that's right yeah that is rare do you know many people that have been for i don't know many people who have gone four but i certainly didn't forecast that and i don't think anybody else did you know i wasn't that the blue chip guy you know high school college early pro that you would have thought hey this is going to be somebody that's gonna have some longevity so looking back you know when you're in it you're kind of on the wheel and there was times a lot of times where i thought that i potentially had memory loss memory issues just because you know my wife or friends would just be like remember that time when we did xyz and i'd be like no and they'd be like we were there we were at this place it was dinner or whatever and i just wouldn't remember fully and i just attributed that to just being so forward direction minded and so when rio finished and it was sort of all over there was a series of events that forced me to sort of recollect and it was very fun and interesting and and yeah four olympics was was quite surprising okay let's work in reverse order what was the forcing function for you to recollect well there was two speaking engagements that.

"So the way that i this is kind of specific volleyball but i'm sure can apply to other places the way that i framed i remember being like probably fifteen in this is around the time that that blocking becomes a thing 'cause you're tile enough in volleyball and it it's a big momentum shifter energy shifter in in our sport so that you can imagine those things in in other sports too and like a sack full i think would be similar like a defensive move that just shifts the mental in so i remember watching that happen than watching the faces of the girls who just got blocked and the body language of them and seeing how it affected them one point or two points or three points later and the rest of their team and i looked at that i'm not gonna do that i wanna i wanna figure out how to not do that so what i decided was that for any given point a really two points vailable one was in the play that we just had a i hit a ball and got blocked we lost the point the second point is that space right after that if i let them see that it affected me if i put my head down if i walk away by frustrated i lose the point but if i keep my head up shoulders back i walked back in i want the next ball than i win that point in that moment it was just about blocking but it became kind of how i thought about.

"Okay good so back sore we've known each other long time you a member of the women's national team indoor for indoor volleyball for america for the united states and we had the pleasure of knowing each other for a handful of years while you're competing on the world stage so that has led me to understand something that's really unique about you that so one of the best in the world at what you do with indoor women's volleyball to make the national team in the united states is a significant marker of command of craft and i just want to ask you one question before i take that thought any further what is your relationship with pain i would say we have a very close relationship i don't love it but i think i've i've come to a place in my life where i can i can accept its presence okay that's a big deal because you've lived with it for a long time chronic pain yeah in a way that some of the brightest minds in medicine haven't figured out what's going on for you and so can you can you walk us through early years and like what that was like growing up just to set the context for this what i think is an extraordinary commitment to be able to pursue whatever it is that you pursuing in your case volleyball in context with incredible pain so just shape the earlier's yes earlier is pre pain.

"Hinted at last hour this is in the new york times today transgender volleyball star in brazil is olympics and stirs debate the second most popular sport in brazil is volleyball i of course is football or soccer and by the way i understand that i i find the volleyball fascinating it the it's an amazing thing what they are able to use the hard hit balls at their able to return it's really it's it's what i don't by the way it's one of the few sports i have absolutely no preference for male or female it looks equally talented to me maybe the men can hit it a little harder but it doesn't mean anything it's have no interest in women's basketball i'm not saying one shouldn't i just don't i mean to be honest i don't have much trust in men's basketball either it's not it's not my sport of choice but if i had to see one or the other i would watch men do it but in volleyball it doesn't matter it's fascinating to watch either men or women playing it's a very big deal in brazil and there is this tall very strong woman if you see her arms you will you will understand that i'm looking at a picture of her right now she's undergone surgeries to to be a woman she obviously feels as as one if i met her i would probably think she is a woman in even if i didn't i would i would i would say she as courtesy to this person the question is is it fair to compete with a male body even if you've undergone surgery even is it fair to compete with a male body against other women of the women who were born with it who have female biology we'll be back you're listening to the.
