"First baseman Yuli Gurriel, who was having a great year so far. 3 14 8 homers He's driven in 40. And an O. P s over 900 as he fouls back first pitch fastball from Stripling. And of course we have to Gori ALS in this game. The older brother is usually the younger brother is Lourdes Gourriel Jr. The blue jay left fielder. About nine year difference between the two Julie is turning 37 a few days. And Lord is is 27 closing in on 28 as stripling misses down and away with the curveball. Ball and a strike Yuli Gurriel singing in the top 10. In the majors in a batting average on base percentage and RBIs. He is having a great year so far, 11 at a curve ball stays high ball, too. The good thing for the Blue Jays right now. Nobody's on because One thing he's done really well as an Astro is just come through in the clutch runners on base runners in scoring position has been such a dependable hitter. Great offensive team Gourriel a big part of that, as he chases a slider away weak bouncer to first guerrera way to his right and has to throw back towards first to stripling covering, But Gourriel does not run well and they get them by a couple of steps for the first out. Already early in this game. We've seen a couple of very good, very athletic plays by Guerrero Jr over there at first base and that one off balance through perfectly to strip and that's such a tough play with the pitcher covering first base. He's trying to get in the in the right line. He's also trying to get timing as well to be able to receive the ball step on the base. It's so important that he gets a good feed, and that was a tough play that will just kind of go unnoticed, but really nice job there between the two One down top of the second. Now the right fielder for the Astros left hand hitting Kyle Chucker to 50 with 11 homers on the year. And the first pitch curveball is fouled off. Well, I will tell you singing as someone who calls games for the Blue Jays and sees virtually Every game. So last year, Guerrero weighed around £280. He's around 240 right now. He he went to work during the last season and into the winter. And has come back a much different player offensively and defensively, never played first base before last year was a third basement, one swing and a miss and so in two on chucker But he has been in my estimation above average, and I think because people assume he's a big guy, and he's never played there any time he does something good. There's a bit of a wow factor with it. But he has been quite good out over there, throwing, scooping knowing when to come off the bag. To swing and a Miss Stripling strikes out Tucker on three pitches to the point singing where Charlie Montoya, the manager, has said repeatedly he thinks there's a gold glove and Vladimir Guerrero's junior over Vladimir Guerrero Junior's future. Over at first base, and that is not something anybody ever could have conceived of last year. That's impressive. I don't think first base is as easy as people think it is. Litmus. Diaz looks at a strike. You've got guys that are just go put him at first base, and it's like they're involved in like every play. Basically, I mean, Just angles and timing and knowing when not to range too far to the right. Just all that kind of stuff. No. One from Stripling a fastball in on the hands of Diaz in a lazy flyable to right field, Right. It's a Oscar Hernandez and Ross Stripling has an easy 1 to 3 top of the second. No score going bottom, too. And this is Major League baseball on ESPN Radio and the.

John Hunter from The Frozen Rope Podcast

"Let's jump right in man to frozen rope. Let us know who you are and what you do. My name is john hunter. I am thirty years old from northeast. Philly i'm a union glazer by day but i am a podcast. Her by night a baseball podcast about three months ago during the world series. I decided to go for it. I never I always wanted to do it. But i just. It was weird. It was like a couple of years. There was a couple of years where i was just telling my brother like i wanna to do this. Like this is what i to do. And then you know just life happens or you. Just you know procrastinate on stuff and it just just ended up not happening. And i mean it's kinda crazy. I'm probably the only person you've ever benefit benefited from the pandemic. I decided like all right. Well i have nothing else better to do right now and i just decided that his by like all like the microphones already had headphones off but like my wife already had. My wife has a mac book. And i was like all right. Well why don't just get into it. And i'll do it. And then the world series happy. You know what this is what. I'm going to start it i. I was sitting on headphones stuff for like two months before i even recorded an episode and it was just like it was crazy. But that's pretty much how it all started. So how did you come up with a name the frozen ropes. Explain that all right so the frozen rope a frozen rope in its own. Right is a a line drive or a a like in basketball. It's considered like something that just like shack is. He just threw the ball pretty much of the rim. And that's like for baseball. Like i remember the first time i've ever heard the term. It was vladimir guerrero was playing. I think for the expos at the time and he threw a lot. He threw a liner from from the right field right to the catcher and the and the announcer was like that was a frozen rope and i was like i like that and then it became my gamertag on like xbox back fox three six and i was an like then it just over the years. I was like you know if i ever do one. If i were to go podcast the name of it will be the frozen row. Podcast and this has been since i was like. I don't know maybe like twelve. Thirteen new podcast. Ball's probably if i ever do something the frozen rope lock. That's also again all right so so explain a little bit about the process right three months in. Obviously you had the name. Since you're twelve yeah What about the logo and things like that. So the logo was pretty simple. Is the major league baseball. i mean. hopefully they don't come after me for infringement or anything but it's a. It's literally just a baseball. The baseball symbol. The major league baseball symbol with headphones on it and it started off as being red white and blue normal. The normal one and then. I got affiliated with media. Group called the buzz and they were just like you know we. We don't wanna get hit with infringement. They're like so. What can we do here. And i was like. I mean you could change the color if you want to your color scheme. And that's what they did. They changed it to their scholar. Scheme ended up working out pretty well. They put the ball in the headphones. And it was just completely just change. Everything about it so it was. It was pretty cool. That's awesome so explain a little bit about how you got connected with the buzz okay. So the i'm in like this. I'm a nerd when it comes to baseball. So i'm in a sports group simply just pretty much baseball. It's called sports chat but it's really not just baseball pretty much on a why they don't just change it a baseball chat whatever so it started off with that and then there's this guy like you know i told him i made episode or two and he's like oh give let me let give it a listen so he gave listen and he was like he's like you know me and my body just started a media group not too long ago with another group and the guy some. I went nuts so they just decided this move on from that it ended up being where they just were like a baseball podcast because they have like five. They'd five podcast on their thing right now and before me and all five of them were either for them. Were wrestling podcast. I don't know why you need that. Many good for them. And there's a guy who's actually from like england who's on there which is pretty cool. It's pretty cool. The way they do it. They're a great group of guys and it's pretty cool everything and then there was a guy. Then there's some rain on. I think there's a soccer program to that. They're trying to generate right now. Trying to get more people to watch and on anyone. You guys are in a soccer. But if he's argo try that and then Then they different stuff on there but it was pretty cool the way that it kind of came about and then i told them that i wrote. I've be right little articles. I've written articles for guys know the tattoo dunphy. So dunphy is a friend of mine. I've known for a long time. But i went to high school with a grade school. I believe too. And like i've known for a long time him in this other dude joe that i'm friends with a started a base. They started a podcast and stuff called like deep fly and they do a bunch of stuff for their own media group. So they asked me. Would you want to write for our so. I was doing like little baseball pieces for the phillies. And i would just write little things for them and it ended up being pretty cool. It was it was like a cool experience. So i get myself into that type of realm like i always wanted to do something baseball related. I didn't care what it was like i. I'm way too small to play and to old to play so it's just got past that and i was an in so i kind of looked on the other side and i don't know it's just something that i was always into so it all worked out well so so explain a little bit about So to download An episode from the frozen rope. What what can they expect. What some of the topics you hit Things like that So one thing i always. I'm a red sox fan. That's the start off. And i always tell people baseball fan. I red sox me and second. There's i never really ever wanted to do anything as far as just saying like i want to cover one team. Yes there is. Because i'm very diverse. When it comes to the sport. I know pretty much. I don't want to brag. But i know a lot i know i know pretty much everything enough to make my own podcast and be confident with the things that i say. Yeah so i feel as if when you go on there. You'll see someone who's not biased. You'll see somebody who you know truly cares about. The sport gives a good input on my thoughts. In how. I how. I look at the game. Yeah i got a guy the other day. Text me one of my friends from the from the union. Us just like it's crazy. It's like he's like. I feel like i know the game. He's like but you like no it and he's like he's like you. It's almost like i give him like a managerial like input. Like i've been around since i was like nine. My dad was a head coach of saint joe's prep. He was a great baseball player. I've been around the game my whole life and then it just you know i. It just been something that i've always been in love with. I told my wife. That's unfortunate. You are probably my second. Love will always be my first and she just tells me she hates me for that. But it's funny. it's just it's just. It's just how it's always been baseball's always been there you know and so it's i always wanted to do something with it and you'll see somebody who just did something with

Blue Jays face Rays as underdogs in wild card playoff series

"Playoffs start tomorrow maybe even today even yesterday as you're listening to this, we're going to go. I mean ordinarily take quite a bit of time and Karen previewing each series. But we don't have that kind of time because there are eight playoff series and they are best of three which is going to lend itself to all kinds of chaos and so we're GonNa go through each of these series intern. We're going to turn hit the high notes and then at the very end deliver, our world series picks So let's start with the top series in the American league the Tampa Bay rays versus the Toronto Slash Buffalo Bluejays. The first bullet point I have in my notes here is with because the Toronto Blue Jays with with Vladimir Guerrero junior and hundred. View. A Hundred Kirk. This is a wide team and I love and as much as as high as I am on the radio. I'm very excited. See the Blue Jays in the playoffs this help them or hurt them here I think dot you've seen all hundred kirk hit I. Think how can you? How can you say anything other than than the with helps them yeah. I like the idea that maybe Vlad as just gonNA break out suddenly in the playoffs because he's looked really good the last couple of weeks or so and it would. Be Wonderful if he just figured out how to hit the ball in the air and really had a great October and it'd be really fun if Nate Pearson came back from injury and turned into a bullpen weapon this month but I just personally don't see a great case for the Jays over the race I think they're both good teams. I. Think The an exciting team with a bright future but the race are really good and I think beyond review who is not even starting game one for the Jays I just don't have A. Lot of faith in most of that trump rotation or bullpen frankly and other than the game restarts it seems to me that Tampa Bay has the pitching edge both in the bullpen and the rotation and offensively maybe it's a wash, but it just seems to me that the the pitching edge is firmly in Tampa Bay side. So I think the Toronto Bullpen and this is going to be the kind of thing that gets said right before they give up nine runs in the seventh inning eight-game one I think it's better than baby. You think maybe they get given credit for I could see a path with this pitching because what they what they're going to try to do apparently is is bullpen game it with a match shoemaker taking up a little bit of load on the front of the maybe we get Pearson in the end of game one we haven't seen blake Snell pitched that deep in games in the postseason in the past, and then game too. I think you could make an argument that we use the best pitcher in the series. So if that happens. If. The blue, Jays do need to shoot the moon but I could see how they get it how they get it done with that said, this raise team just has so much depth in the lineup. There are good defensively they have so many pitchers not just the scary. Snell Morton tile glass now types just the I mean we saw this in the unfortunately in the for for me in the last weekend of the of the regular season where they shut down the phillies like even down to bespectacled Wade Miley who was lights out in the last game of the season yeah. The razor they've just got too much pitching I. Think as much as funny. It would be to see the the Blue Jays fight I think the the rates are going to take this one pretty handling.

Chicago White Sox: Luis Robert continues to impress

"Game. It doesn't count the standings. But, boy Oh, boy, I watched Friday night the Inter squad on TV, Luis Robert Too long home runs. This guy looks like a monster. It reminds me of Felipe Alou is managing the Expos back in the I want to stay in the mid nineties, and somebody asked him about this young prospect named Vladimir Guerrero. And he had not played in the big leagues yet, and Felicia's answer Wass. When you just look at him, you think superstar and that's almost the same thing you get. When you look at Louie's Robert because time during spring training, you just look at him and he just looks. Like he's going to fill that part of a superstar he has. There's just a GN it factor. And then you watch him play and it solidifies every year. Everything you think about the guy and it's almost reminiscent of like I said what Philippe has said about a young unknown Vladimir Guerrero at the time when he was coming on the market. The White Sox and mean they didn't get him cheaply. It was think $26 million for a guy you don't know if he's going to turn out, but you didn't hear Yankees Dodgers. Cubs, red socks like the ones that have the highest payrolls. Why was that? I know the socks have done a magnificent job getting Cuban players going all way back to Minnie Minoso. Tha Jose of Bray you they've got Moncada. But why were some of the heavyweights not chasing this guy? You know what I wish I had a specific answer for you. I don't have one. But I will say what? You just reiterate what you just said, and amplify on it. The attacks have been a really good job of scouting the Cuban players. Now Moncada was signed by the Red Sox and came in the trade from from Michael Kopeck. But with Michael Kopeck, I should say For sale, but it's just one of those things where the White Sox I think maybe they do their homework better than anyone else. And that's why they were able to get a guy like Louise Robert, because He just looks like the really, really feel He does just looking at him, and then you see him in the box, but it's like, Oh, my God. How good can this guy be? Um You're right. It wasn't cheap. But it wasn't like out of this world money either. And, ah, kudos to the White Sox Foreign office and they're scouting. You know, this is the work of scouts. Thes air, not analytics driven. Data. You define a guy who has never left the island of Cuba, where you don't have a lot of information. This is scouting. And obviously you look, I'm a big proponent of scouting, and I'm a It's frustrating to see how it's being minimalized and Almost extinguished in some places, but there is still a place for scouting. And here's a prime example. We're talking to Pedro Gomez from ESPN. When you look at a team

"A good question yeah wonder franco is incredible a if you go look at what he did in yappy league at the same age that vladimir guerrero is doing those types of things and they actually and then bear in mind this is they switch hitting shortstop a if we were lining those two up right now like his body were still prospect eligible i'm not sure who we'd have at number one a so that's kinda give you an indication of yeah it says a lot you know i no like i feel like to they're all they're all my guy to some degree 'em bs like bronco i think everybody's guy a no mackenzie gore's incredible she did not have a great evening clear he had jitters yeah i did i wasn't that impressed by him a right in that one inning that's part of the problem with gore and it was why it took me a little extra time to get on him as a high schooler because what he done one inning is not that blow you away like he's not gonna do the nape pearson stuff gore is four pitches command you know it's it's the type of thing that grows on you over a longer period of time he's just not built for the one inning type of showcase a environment getting locks gavin lux no i know he struck out and i don't think he had a hit in the game but i have some concerns about him throwing from shortstop which is really bad speed and lift perspective and like what his body has become since high school when he was a high scoring wisconsin it was thought at the time that this is a glove only shortstop who maybe hits enough to be an everyday type of shortstop and now it's like he's clearly got plus power a at least end you you do like offensively a so so the transformation is pretty incredible end just the way the dodgers have developed hitters is is has been so strong on a i it wouldn't surprise me if he's not a star i there's i'm not sure what is gonna happen defensively they're 'cause there are throwing issues it might just medium of second base a but it also made me like move so less deal but i don't think it's gonna matter i think that there is monster middle of your bat working there and he's like the guy who's prize me the most would be like thomas who's the diamond backs their second round pick last year he's using other smaller guy five eleven one seventy five his dad is the white sox fox strength and conditioning coach and his bp was pretty impressive for like how little he is a i was sort of taken aback by that i've seen him he he he wasn't advance high schooler so he was like at area codes and at like some of these big events and said i go see as underclassmen already but like the player that he might he might have some sneaky power like he might be someone who a week short of maybe have some treanor concerns coming into this game that when we washington bp along with everybody else we start to slide him up a are less so yeah like alex jones is the guy from the game who i left a more impressed with him when i arrive you'll find heiress work at fan graphs you find me on twitter at longing hagan you can find him a haunting taco stand around the the greater phoenix area and a i'm happy that you could find a beer so thanks for coming on hey salsa bars salsa bars with like pickled cares and stuff is you've got those a i'll be there they're all right we'll talk to you next time we are prospects of the dealer tops give my.

Should Dale Murphy be in the hall of fame?

"Straight. Talk brought to you by straight talk wireless, best phones, best networks, no contracts. So I'll said, so the guest we're efforting is right Thompson, who has a phenomenal piece in ESPN the magazine this week about Dale Murphy and how there's this whole generation, particularly in the southeast who believes domer- for should be in the hall of fame. The baseball hall of fame induction ceremony is Sunday. It'll be Jack Morris, Alan Trammell Vladimir Guerrero who mentioned earlier who would be wiffle ball player. Jim Thome who'd had a can o Jim Thome e who should be on everyone's all time. Looks like you should be on your softball league team Griffin, rip Chipper Jones. And Trevor Hoffman. And we're in the funny Marty when you get to certain age, it's like the guys you watch their entire career another. Yeah, it makes me feel really old. Like what those guys are going in. The hall of fame, right? Trevor Hoffman was the I was he liked the first real closer. I guess maybe Dennis Eckersley might have been the first real closer, but Hoffman was at the guy that I remember that came in and just therm nothing but smoke. Yeah, and but then like got crafty and he's of the group. He's probably the most is numbers are crazy, but of the group. He's the one that people seem to have the most reservations about, but he was there man like there was who else were the lease? Myth lease myth hall of fame, John rocker, John rocker. John rocker lasted a second, wasn't he closer though? He was starter was who's closer goose Gossage hit Googlers. Goose was the first goose was the first one of my life that was just was like just came. Just came in throwing smoke and. Yeah, but those closers were the best, but then but then you had the guys that were like great and then weren't so great. Like Bruce, Bruce suitor closer, Billy Wagner. Billy Wagner was the man son? Yeah, Billy Wagner grew up near me. He's from tazewell Virginia. Went to Fareham college. The little teeny, tiny Fareham college, of course, Moran Rivera, but goose was the one hour reduces the one that came along and I thought and then other ones, though there's some other ones that are scaping me right now that. When unique personalities when we look like maybe not kids. But as we were getting on towards high school college, they were some guys, I'll think of it as we go. I'm still working on joslin. Trying to think. Francisco rodriguez. I mean lease myth, I love Lee Smith lease. Myth is a really good call man. He's tall. Yeah, right. Eckersley was the guy probably though. Yeah, see. I'm so old armor when he was was a decent starter, but. Why didn't he? Yeah, you break. I want to Braise about small malts basically two different careers, which is wise in the hall of fame so. So bring up del Murphy because of the peace right Thompson road and full disclosure, I'm sitting in my office right now with a framed portrait of del Murphy, like standing in front of the American flag, holding his golden glove. And so, yeah, if you grew up in the part of the world we did and this is the super station era. And I, I knew so much about the cubs and the Braves, both because you watch them on television every day. You watch cubs in the morning. Watch brazen night. I went to a cubs cubs Braves game one time with the church youth groups that with girl, and I thought she would be impressed at my overwhelming knowledge of both teams and all scare. I mean, because if you watch both of those teams every single day all summer long, you know, every summer of youth it became will you know when Rafael Ramirez the plate and I'm going well, you know, he really struggles on so. And so or about Bob Horner. Yeah. Bob Horner, Jeff, Treadway Jeff Treadway. Wow. Cam Zane Smith?.

"So we've got some some headlines that we want to get into and i'm gonna bump one right up to the top rapid fire headlines by the way rapid fire all right we'll bump this one's listed at number three i'm going to bump it go ahead baby vladimir guerrero junior yet guy motherfucking big leagues he will be promoted to aaa i cannot wait and you have the reason why this such a logjam obviously the toronto blue jays apparently have no rush to to get him to the big league level i get it whatever i picked jim there's no law there's nobody in his way there's nobody in vlad juniors wave when you are vlad junior and that roster looks like the way it does in toronto jd coming back that's fine that's fine that is all fine and dandy jd's got lower leg issues jd's got shoulder issues i'm telling you right now there is nobody in the way of ladd junior this is strictly a financial decision and it'll happen in september is when he'll get the cup of coffee and i believe we see junior next year in the big leagues that injury took the pressure off the blue jays a little bit didn't it you know it did you know it did you he's got a bad wheel he's gotta let that knee rest they've already cited the need to try to bring him along more defensively so he's not just a blight on the diamond as i think they put it well that's not what you're going to get you do want him to be serviceable wherever you're going to find a home for him so you pair that with the injury now toronto has exactly what they need in terms of defense to give to the fan base when they come calling for vlad junior in two weeks after the break fuck it we're out of it why can't we see him now why do we have to wait until september well guys there's just there's some things that go into that all right so just hold tight and we'll give you your vlad comes up timber and realistically there's a very solid chance he breaks camp next year so i i yeah i'm excited about him just continuing to progress i really want him i mean fuck man i wouldn't i wouldn't have a problem if he didn't show up to aaa for a while and they continue to rest and bring him along just because he's such mr mr is gonna leave aa jerry hitting north of four hundred yeah oh yeah ripe your head around though yeah that's the kind of tell this guy is four hundred and it's not like it was over the course of seventy five abc's or hundred aby no it's it's a body of work but yeah i i just wish that the blue jays were in a situation where not that they would rush him but i just wanna see him now i just i don't it's almost like a soda thing you're not rushing him it's if he can come up and he can hang then he can come up and he can hang and there's no reason why the toronto blue jays like oh well i understand you want the the service time thing is obviously a big factor here but do you think if he got called up right now that he could hang after what you saw from him at with what was it fisher fisher cats he's he would be tested there's one thing that you always see exposed early from these young guys and that's their ability to adapt to the off speed at the big league level because the dip the difference between aaa or aa and the big leagues is the difference between command and control i've laid this out before on this podcast and guys in triple a are in aaa for two reasons one they're filling space or two they're trying to figure out how to take that next step between controlling the baseball and commanding the baseball guys the big leagues command to breaking balls guys the big leagues command oh to fastballs so when you.

"One hit with ron's position in three of these four games so you know obviously they were able to have some success there by man to the lose four straight in a series to toronto with what's going on with them right now absolutely brutal and when you look at this this series for baltimore here against the four starters for toronto high may garcia through ninety one pitches in six innings j half one oh five over seven aaron sanchez won a one over six and a third marco estrada ninety seven over six no one works counts for this baltimore team they do okay in the walk rate category a lot of that has to do with manny machado but this is just not a baltimore team that gets on base this is not a baltimore team that creates a lot of opportunities the rotation is terrible brad branca's not pissed well out of the bullpen he's kind of killing his trade value for them right now daryn oh days been hurt is a bad bad look for baltimore right now and you know as as toxic of a team toronto was all out there and you know obviously for toronto me yeah they win four games here and they kind of get themselves back on track a little bit but then the injury to vladimir guerrero junior he will be reevaluated in four weeks strength patellar tendon so how there's no hope from below either so for toronto still not a team that i'm very interested in backing here maybe he gets some fool's gold coming out of them sweeping a really bad team like baltimore but man the state of affairs in the al east outside of boston new york really not great really not great at all tampa bay really fallen off now is their offense has regressed a bit of course now chris archer on the shelf as well jay's are a mess the orioles are beyond reproach so not not a great affairs in the alias right now to say the least how about the arizona diamondbacks i was telling you that i think it was about time to back amazon again i think they'd kind of gotten that stuff out of their system they go to colorado sweep the rockies at chorus field about paul goldschmidt here paul goldschmidt.

"Can be as much a psychologist as anything else because here is my plan us if you have ted williams batting second and vladimir guerrero batting third how will you go to a coach both of them what is your falsafi as a as a bannon coach when one will not swing it a pitch that is a fraction of an inch off the strike zone and the other one takes spoils off his shoot tops and hits it out of the ballpark and will swing if balls in the dirt and over his head completely free as a as as he can be on every of fat and still hit 320 hitting is completely individual completely individual everybody hits differently and to me that's why i don't get involved with batting coaches i think hitting is a is very much a natural order guys are good at it or they aren't good at it i don't think hitters are made if they will made every team would go produce a bunch of them they born and they can do it more than one way that's like saying every golf is the same he's got to get back square but they don't have to do with the same way because otherwise you wouldn't see guys who swung the club like arnold palmer and jim feerick brad and belmore was up red your government bigger question last night i wanted to get your bought what's at this point we've got a better rear brett gardner or daniel murphy i think daniel murphy's had more has hit higher highs but i think consistently god is probably had a more consistent career but i think i think murphy's hit higher highs right of course that i mean i he got into a certain level that a god he's never gotten too but i think guy guard he's had a very solid career for his own right bear point the other thing i i wanted to think of a y you to think about uh regarding the i i can't think of of the last time in new york or immeasurably the alleged immediately the way the yankees ever play peter with easy i mean you know your bank he's replace maryono very well to.
