"Yeah no that. That's what scares you about them. In in the playoffs right is is they. They haven't had a lot of consistency as you said they'd been the best team or they've been the one of the worst teams in the league and so you get into the playoffs You don't is not that they can't win. You just don't know what to expect from you. Can't it's hard to predict exactly what you're going to get from them. So i just think when when it comes to a team like the yankees I if their offense isn't doing what they needed to do it's going to be. It's going to be tough. It's going to be tough warm and I just don't know that they have the dependable. Starters that that you would need you know aside from from garrett cole In order to compete in a deep run in the postseason. Yeah and it's been. It's been a little worrisome about that team but they do have the top slot with seven to go one game above boss this this series coming up against toronto is is their chance to kind of put some separation between them and everybody else It's but at the same time for toronto. I think we find out who they are. This is one of the. This'll be one of the biggest series because they follow that with the baltimore orioles who they're baltimore so you you know what that that series is going to likely end up back but This is a big series for both teams. Oh for sure if toronto can win this series against the new york yankees. We are going to be sitting. We're going to have toronto in the playoffs. They are currently one game behind the boston. Red sox and by the way all you nineties fans out there the seattle mariners are two games out there till games out. I want it to happen so bad. Tony so so bad i want. I want to run on seattle to get these top two slots so bad just because it would be different and it would feel like a bit of the changing of the guard in baseball for me. And i do think i quite frankly i'd welcome it. I wouldn't be mad at liz. I always like enjoy seeing good teams. Get in. I have a personal connection. You're going from a really good team to a really bad team last year and a year later is it's that team is is ahead of where we're the padres are and still pushing for A playoff spot. He didn't mean it this way but i read it as this guy is so mad that he's a mets fan because he just wrote down if you had to put a percentage of what chance he would give the blue jays to make a late push like one hundred percent there one game out man there one day right there that screams. I hate that. I'm a mets fan. It's one hundred percent does. It is not a surprise. We know our producer dylan puts wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to his medicine as you said they have packed it in but yeah the the percentages is as you said. It's one hundred percent they will make late push does late push being get in. I don't know we'll find out. But i certainly think They got a good chance in here in. This is their opportunity this series against the yankees I think we'll tell us all we need to know about the blue jays in terms of. Are they ready to make that next. Big step yeah and all those people that are sitting around clamoring for vladi junior to be the mvp. Which by the way anyone who thinks that you're wrong. But i will say that person on that team. I'd actually say who has mixed just as much of a cases. Vladi is marcus simeon the year. Having right now. I mean you could say everything one about vladi. Simeon right now is about to set a new record for home runs by a second baseman major league baseball. It's been around for one hundred fifty years he's gonna break a record that's existed for one hundred fifty years. He's going to be the best ever at that. I mean that's just incredible to me that we actually are getting this. I mean talk about plan your best baseball when you need to. I mean the blue jays is needed him. He's going into free agency. There's just so much that lines up for him And as you know what has been fun to watch he. He's not your prototypical superstar like he discount goes about his business and plays the game and he seemingly has gotten better and better and better and right now. He's playing as well as he's played ever. I think in his career question for you. Tony going into the final week of baseball. What are you hoping for. What are you hoping to see. Breakout with this wildcard and more importantly what do you think is going to happen with. This wildcard oke. What i think will happen with the american league east wildcards specifically the american league. Wild-card what do you think is going to happen. And what do you want to happen because those could be very different. I would love to see some crazy fourteen. Tie at the top where you get like a one sixty three one sixty three And then you have to go into your wild car. You know that would i. It's your first wildcard game. I would love to see a large tie at the thing. What i think what happened. I ultimately think the yankees. And i think the blue jays get in. I think they find a way to get into this playoffs. I think ultimately they'll still in the season with baltimore. And i know anything can happen in baseball but as long as i think. They don't get swept by the yankees. I think they'll find a way to get in because of those last three games against baltimore. I like it and what you said when you said what you were hoping for tony. "Was there anything else. Sorry craig go head to that point about you mentioning that. He's not the we need to be but he doesn't need to be a semi more at the moment. We just need him to get us some solid innings if he gives me five innings next start a couple of runs against yankees and we can actually manage to get some offense. It's still win. Yeah that's right now. yeah. I'm just. I'm not a fan of it to start off because then you had to win. The next to your cushion is gone leg. Especially he's performing the way he has been. Your cushion has gone. I like the idea. Starting bats if we can find that out mats and that would have been like filled up against that. That's interesting and i thought so. Berea starts friday right. And then you go ray manila. You have your off day. Monday and you go to matt's that puts brio and line for wednesday that would be short rest for potential. Gave one sixty two so. I'm not sure how they're going to manage that. And that would actually lineup. Stephen matt's for the last game of the regular season which would be interesting at that point. "A hot take. No it's not a heartache. He said it that way because like it's almost like people are afraid or will argue that a west coast team outside of mike trout and shohei otani could have like the best anything like mookie betts. "Oh my god. They are hyping hot in twelve of their last thirteen. They are just annihilating teams and they had their way with the baltimore orioles on the weekend. That's to be expected at twenty two runs in that last game double digits. I think in every game and just the way. They're lighting it up at the plate it's phenomenal but when the tampa bay rays of the opponent you're thinking okay. They'll keep things close to the end of that run. Maybe a at the best team in the american league. No the jays kept it going and mold tampa bay in the opener of their series against them. The three gamera here in the in the early part of this week and just right. Now the jason. Let's put this thing into historical perspective. First of all they're fifteen two fifteen into run yup. They're batting three twelve with four forty. Three home runs in that seventeen game stretch in september alone. Three home runs. Yeah so in the month of september alone batting three thirty one. Get a load of these two numbers in september alone. Thirteen games batting three thirty one. Thirty six home runs. No team has done that in this century or the last one in a thirteen game. Run so just a nominal. Wow yeah just like why i. I wonder what happened. I wonder what happened. Like teams can be a little flat right. There were going from there from vladi. "He's been through this before. The astros yasser has been wild races. They've been division races type playoff game. So this is a guy you can lean on and a guy you should lean on especially with the race coming up they still. I think when we were going through the schedules. Austin is now done with tampa. It seems like the yankees only one series left tampa between now and the end of the year. We have the most race games out of those three teams so we need them for those series and i would like him to play in those six race games. Yeah right now. I'm the offense ain't broke. I don't need him in the moment. So i'm trying to find a way that at least he's available for a the Situation leading the ballgame. I tomorrow maybe through the weekend just so that you know there's somewhere to get them in our play. A game ran. William there I want him next week. Ready to go. Is betsy kennedy h spot but right now there's enough hot hands that i fled offense go until the wheels saul often need him back in that catalyst role to spin offense. Backup right. now. There's enough things going right that i'm him to get a few days off and get as close to right to to the point. That brand needs him to have them through those race games. That's my but then again. "You know what's the situation that. Hopefully we're going to be doing good enough on those. You know the other four rotation pieces. Hopefully i don't want to say it. But even tanner roark is looked. Okay can hurt. But i really think that's where you gotta be hanging your hat. We're hoping to get goodness through one through four that right now you minds will just play the wild card in that fifth spot and hope that stripling whoever can fill in that spot and that boy just enough the hammer down there. It's a fifty fifty chance to win every night because the other catch on that to us guys. We've talked about this if we can hold somebody within three or four runs every night. This is gonna be a very interesting team just because of the fact that we have the ability to score easily that every night. And we've been seeing it with the dusting that we've seen in most spring training games when the regular lineup is in it. How many hits vladi have the other night or the other day and four hits and then the rest of the offense scored seventeen runs as it's like okay. That's that was against major league stars that the beginning of that game anyways so there is something tangible there that we just enough in that fifth spot. I'm not saying bring josh towers out of retirement..

That's a hell of a season but it's july eighteenth and there. i think i'm not positive to the number. But i believe there. Seventy two games left for the blue jays already. I'd say yeah. There's only twenty blue jay players in history who've had thirty one homers or more in a season vladimir guerrero is the twentieth and he only needed this many games to get there still a seventy two to go. Yuck coleman go. I'm a i'm ajay's fan. Is you know i watch a lot of the games. I always have it on the host fantastic. I like those. I like squad. Stevie and they're they're getting more and more and more and more exciting each game from your cells to your to your dawn. I them dante. That's his dad. "Has twenty eight and he's third in slugging consider. I know it's only half a season. But i'm willing to say that this is the type of hitter that grow junior is and he's not he's not going down. He's an e this is what he is and he's he's going to stay this this at this level and i consider that to be a comeback. You look even last year. His defense you say okay. Well as offense was decent. Say to seventy to sixty average is necessarily bad but considering that you're expecting three forty average or that you're getting three forty average this season you were kind of expecting something closer to that or at least three hundred and aside from his offense defense. Last season was okay. I mean like there was someplace where you'd make some errors. A lot of them were intuition based where he should have gone to the base instead of played the ball or or whatever but this season. It's a complete turnaround. And i think he has one or two errors and i think those plays were on ones where it was like a bobble but it was. It was a tough play for him to make any ways. But regardless you look at a lot of these plays like if you watch a lot of the games and if the numbers don't won't reflect this they won't say like oh perfect catch by vladi but if you go look and watch those games you'll see that there was a play where it should have been an error on third baseman or the shortstop or second baseman or somebody else on the infield and he caught up all and he's his defense has improved so much the point where maybe you can argue that. He's a gold lover. I don't know depends. But i think considering what we expected from vladi last season what. He didn't do last season and what he was able to do. This season after putting all that work in the offseason. He's got to be the comeback player..

"With states three colon cancer last year and he worked his way back from that and now he'll be in the homerun derby on monday. I got a chance to catch up with them on thursday trae. What's the best advice you've gotten about participating in the derby. I honestly haven't gotten too much advice yet on my talk to- vladi the other day though when i was on first base and You know he said other than just enjoying it. you know. that's the most important thing. No matter what happens. You gotta soak it all in and and it's such a cool experience but He said it can get pretty tiring. So you know. I don't know if that means you know taking a little bit less of an effort level out of the swings or things like that Obviously still wanna hit it. Heart and far says why people are watching. But i'm trying to pace yourself. Maybe taking a break at the right time. But it's something. I haven't thought about too much yet. Who's throwing to you. And why so. The pitching coach at notre dame. His name is chuck restano his first year. There was my first year there During the twenty eleven season. So i promised him back then that he can throw to me if i was ever if i was ever in the major league homerun derby he threw me in the big east homerun derby in twenty twelve and we won that. So kind of jokingly kind of serious. I told him that he can throw to me immediately. Derby if it ever happened and and sure enough it did so. He's going to be the ones around. Tell me what that phone call or text messages. Liked to to deliver to him. To ask him to participate. It was great We keep in touch a good amount. And i called them and and i don't think he was sheriff. It was good news or bad news since i was calling him. Obviously i've been through a lot in the last year and a half and getting to call them with that news that it was good news that i was asking him to throw him in. The roman derby was really cool. I think he was fighting back tears a little bit. He was in the airport recruiting. Actually he was on the way back to south. Bend when i call them so you know him and you've also watched the derby. Sometimes it can come down to. How nervous the beef injuries Do you think you'll handle that. I think will handle a great. He's practicing a lot and and You know. I think he can handle the spotlight and handle it really well. And he's said that your job is if you'd be as the p. pitcher is to be invisible as possible When you're out there a little bit even though. He deserves a lot of the spotlight as well. But i think he's going to be great. What's your typical beat me regiment. So typical bp. I'm never really trying to hit to hit too. Many home runs in bp. I'd say on. Normally i just kinda do a progression and then maybe the last couple of rounds let it loose a little bit but obviously homerun derby you gotta let it loose from the get. Go especially with the timer. So there's no there's no punching it through the four hold. The beginning and kind of progressing in homerun derby. You got to be ready to go. So i'll make sure to do that in my warm beforehand and then be ready to go when render starts what your sweet spot in decaying. I'll be like right down the middle all kinda hit it wherever i actually like going up a lot. Mvp to center center in. Apo but i think you know. I'm probably gonna ask for a little bit in on the inter- half of the plate is probably where i'm going to want for any kind of strategy that you've thought about not too much Honestly i i haven't really thought about it too much since we have a few games left before the break and i've been more concerned about that just as my swing hasn't particularly felt amazing The last few weeks in the game. So you know if the thing's true about some people think that the homerun derby can mess up your swing. I you know right now. I'm hoping that it's the opposite. My swing doesn't feel great. Maybe it will give me locked in and right for the second half here. So how much have you practiced a coach. Restano's in south bend so we're not really getting to practice until that day but Darren homes are bullpen. Coach is going to go out with me one day. And we're going to kind of we're gonna practice.
