"It was done really well and the emotion of it was and of course. They won the game in exciting fashion. Oughta light out to right field dyson on the right. He will get this. Nobody will shed with a rising lines ride over the right field wall. The boys are back and they pick up a six to four win. I talked a couple of bluejays fans. The catharsis was was real the roster. That's here tonight. Has never played here as a blue jay and then to feel the love coming out of the stands from the there was a historic elements of vlad senior. Much expos major league baseball in canada but there was also just a pure visceral thrill that they hadn't seen this guy since he had become the guy that they read. This was an amazing day. Tears flowing players crying front office crying stands crying and it ignited onto. They had eleven game homestand in toronto and they went nine into and suddenly it was game in the al wild rates. It's clear that they got this huge emotional left from it and in fact the expectation that they were gonna get an emotional lift from coming home to toronto actually in many ways drove their trade deadline strategy and i think one of the things that the blue jays front office decided and they traded away two of their very best prospects for jose rios at the deadline. Which is really really big. Deal to give up those prospects. A lot of it was them saying we've got. You never have it and especially when you have that lineup around flat and it turns out. They were right as soon as the calendar tortoise september is like their offense. Just turn into a bombshell. And so now we have the lion cub devon standing atop pride rock and the al east. What's happening here. I mean the two wildcard slots in the american league are gonna come out of that division. Both of them are and you have the blue jays who were on this tear. That's absurd as we speak. They've won fifteen of their last seventeen games. But then you also have of course the red sox and the yankees fighting four. Those same musical chairs. So how do you see all of this going well. Scar in the story. I mean we wanna really torture the lion king metaphor right so if there's a star in the story it's the yankees right <hes> Yeah yeah i mean. I guess we could say that. The red sox but interchangeably depending upon your view interchangeably evil. Spoken like a true mets fan. Yes interchangeably evil here. The red sox the yankees. I guess are gonna have cast as the role of oiler scar. Whatever but i kind of feel like red sox in yankee fans are just terrified of this team and they probably should be. I would be terrified of this team. The yankees are going to have to see them a lot down the stretch so much and this is not a teen. You wanna see a lot of the yankees put together their lineup and they trade for rizzo and gallo and stanton and they have judge and all these people. They're not supposed to go to someone else's lineup. It'd be intimidated. They're supposed to be the ones that have the intimidating lineup. And one of the things that i love is that the yankees put together this stack lineup. Sluggers and their fans are terrified of the other. Yeah no we're terrified of the people who we're playing in dunedin and buffalo. We're terrified of that team. There's something like a sneak attack right like they've come out of nowhere and they're so powerful that they're just overwhelming yuka before you can even get your defenses reading. Mean they're kind of like they score runs like it's a consequence of climate change. They come down in buckets. And it's gonna be really really fun going down the stretch because it'll be almost impossible for this offense to slump because every single one of them is a national. You sound really depressed all of a sudden. Yeah yeah yeah yeah. I just felt various chills going down my spine as i imagined. A peroxide added covered in doe and very hungry vlad guerrero junior just showing up inside my house. Kata that's the play katha shaking down your spine. Devin thank you for explaining. Does the circle of life. Thank you thanks. For having. And i'm pablo tori and this has been espn. I'll talk to you tomorrow.

"It's it's almost like he's given permission to forgive. Expos fans can move on because they're guy their treasure glad. Guerrero senior in son is still in canada plan for the enemy but now we can. All claim claiming. Maybe it's okay. Maybe we all be friends now again. Yes vladimir guerrero. Junior is helping expos fans get over so many problems in their lives including the world series that got stolen away from them by the baseball strike in one thousand nine hundred ninety four but after the break devon i want to look at how what the blue jays have overcome. This season may have prepared them to break my heart. It is our favorite time of year as we're back traveling. The road of college football and goodyear knows the passion and the excitement. It takes to drive forward whether your team is home or away. The games traditions are still the same. Through every first down touchdown or fourth quarter comeback by moving anything is possible. Goodyear's here drive you forward on the road. That moves saul goodyear more driven so seven last season and again this season the blues been dealing with really extreme and unforeseen circumstances well beyond their control because the pandemic forced them into exile. Basically exile one hundred and fifty kilometers away in a small ballpark in buffalo new york. So what kind of impacted that have on this team charlie montoya. The j. manager described it as a six hundred day road trip. Because when khalid hit obviously they can plan toronto because the border closing..

"So i need to know more about the sun as in the guy who had to follow in the footsteps all day dad that was mythical because growing up. I'm curious devon. What is that relationship like. I mean it seems obvious that of course baseball is the thing that this guy ends up doing and is pretty damn good at but how did it come to be because i can also imagine that. That's not the easiest thing to do. Yeah it's an interesting relationship discuss with other people because the first thing people will say about his relationship with his father is that the closer relationship with wilburn guerrero. who is vlad. Seniors brother played with him in the major leagues montreal for a time. Was you know a solid hitter. But but nothing special but he is the one who taught glad junior everything he knows about baseball and part of this because flat senior was playing baseball in anaheim. For much of your childhood but if you ask flat junior will he cites right away. It's wilton malls for advice. It's wilton he calls to talk to and you do get the sense talking to people around the blue jays. It's not so much that there's distance between black junior and senior. It seems like their relationship is actually quite good. Blood seniors curly very proud of him. It just seems like lead. Senior is more of a distant reserves kind of figure. Pedro martinez his flag. Junior's godfather and he wants describe slad senior as kind of the lion. King who has all of these lion cubs around and sometimes he's very affectionate and sometimes he's really frightening. That's flags and i think that that's an interesting insight into the relationship between the two of them because flag junior is such a lion cub. He's he's smiley and cuddly. Likes being around him. He's always goofing off he's players. They matata dynamic to fled. Junior is what you're telling me. Yeah accepted in this case..

"Two end doesn't speak to reporters a lot and isn't comfortable speaking english enough to want to take the risk of saying something careless. If you spend any time around the blue jays you just everybody the that guy and it's hard to fake the degree to which they like him. I was in buffalo. There were no reporters. They didn't know. I was there until i introduce myself. They're just goofing around with the guy and he's always having fun so he's jolly he's beloved he. Also it seems per your reporting. He loves to eat. And so the santa claus dynamic. That is developing here. Around vlad guerrero junior. It comes with a criticism right because if there is anything that people get them for fans and teammates alike. It seems to be his weight less star augusta. The fact is coming into the twenty twenty one season. he was a bit of a disappointment. The blue jays the blue jays fans had been hearing about the second coming of vlad guerrero since he was fifteen or sixteen years old when the blue jays signed him for several billion dollars and he hadn't been that guy yet. She had a solid rookie season in two thousand nineteen where he got by pita lonzo and beaten by him in the homerun. Derby just completely overshadowed by and then when when hits he was locked up like the rest of us with his grandmother cooks for him and he gained fifty pounds. Wait about i. I didn't know more about the grandma. Yes the idea is delicious. In every setsu all the garcia. She's black seniors mother. She comfortable when he was a player. She now lives with and cooks for vlad junior but she also cooks for literally everyone as far as i can tell in the blue jays. I asked the social media manager of the blue jays. He had tried flag juniors grandmother's cooking and he was like. Oh yeah everyone has their are players on other teams..

"Hopefully you're mondays off to a great start here going to be another fantastic week across major league baseball but let's take a second to look at where we're at right now. Let's dive into some statistics. Follow it up with some standings let you guys know what exactly is going on here. As we've hit august sixteenth about six weeks away from the conclusion of the regular season so diving into some individuals. Statistics your home. Run leader continues to be shohei ohtani. He now has thirty. Nine home runs on the season. He looks to be the first one to hit that. Forty mark here in the next couple of days. Can he reach fifty on the season. Coming up i think so. I think ten home runs. Eleven home runs here over. the final. Six weeks is not out of the realm of possibility. And it's definitely a story line to watch to see if anybody will be able to reach that fifty mark in second place. Is vlad guerrero junior with thirty five but the real story line here has to be battiste with thirty three home runs. He has thirty. Three home runs in eighty eight games. So that's almost a sixty to sixty five home pace over one hundred sixty two because otani has thirty nine and one hundred and thirteen games. Vlad guerrero has thirty five and one hundred sixteen so tatty savon thirty three in as little as eight games is certainly very very impressive to be in that top three and i just hope he stays healthy one of these years because he could potentially push that sixty home run mark if he continues to develop and hit the long ball like he has so far this season. Your leader in is raphael. Evers of the boston red sox. He has eighty nine. Is vlad guerrero junior. Second with eighty-eight. Jose abrego now up the list. He is tied with shohei ohtani for third place with eighty six and then. Hey zeus. aguilar down. In miami rounds out the top five with eighty four. Your top average leaders. Michael brantley in houston hitting three thirty two this year. He continues to just crush baseball's a professional hitter. He does only have eight home runs. She does have twenty eight doubles extra base hit power. He hasn't left the yard very much this year. But certainly hitting three thirty two very impressive for michael brantley. You have cedric molins. In second place tied with your agree l. at three eighteen so houston has the top two average leaders with recently and guri yell at the top of the list. Trade turner also hitting three eighteenth. So he's tied right there for second place and then adam frazier. Now of the san diego padres hitting three sixteen vlad. Guerrero has dropped down all the way to seventh place. It in three fourteen as he was in contention for that triple crown. It certainly looks like he's gonna finish somewhere in the top. Five or ten in each of those statistical categories your leader in doubles market simeon out of toronto with thirty three zander. Bogart says thirty. Two along with jamir candle lario in detroit. Rafael devers jd. Martinez jesse winkler all tied in second place with thirty two so definitely a race there for the doubles crown. So far this season your leader in hits adam frazier one hundred and forty three cedric mall in second place. One thirty nine. And then david fletcher for the anaheim. Angels out there with one hundred thirty eight certainly very impressive as well when it comes to ope flag guerrero junior just ahead of shohei ohtani with bryce harper in third place at nine eighty one. So harper twenty one home runs twenty six doubles but only forty nine. Rbi's definitely an outlier there when it comes to arthur statistics and guys not getting on base in front of him certainly have led him down this year as only forty nine rb is in ninety seven games. Not where you want it to be if you're a phillies fan. But it's not due to a lack of production when it comes to extra-base hits for bryce harper on the pitching side of things. You're era leader walker. Bueller now leads the league in era at two point. Zero nine brandon would drift in second place at two point. one eight. his teammate. Corbin burns two point two three lance lynn of the white sox is tied with freddie peralta in fourth place at two point two six. So milwaukee three out of the top five when it comes to the title with three guys under two point two six which is certainly another reason why you don't wanna face them when it comes to play off time your leader in in win so far this year. Kyle hendricks in. Julio your reassess each have thirteen on the year next is chris bassett walker bueller and brett suitor with twelve each rounding out the top five their innings pitched that goes zack wheeler with one hundred sixty two walker bueller right behind him a hundred and fifty four and two thirds and then chris bassett with one hundred and fifty so those guys go and deep into games every start have certainly been very impressive. Zack wheeler also leads. The league in strikeouts with one hundred eighty seven garrett cole next on the list with one hundred seventy six zack wheeler does have three more starts than garrett cole. Due to coal missing some time with corona virus other injuries so strikeouts per nine innings. Garrett cole has him but total strikeouts. Zack wheeler still at the top of the list. Corbin burns max scherzer and robbie ray round out the rest of the top five when it comes to saves the bullpen mark melanson and san diego. Thirty four out of thirty.

"But vlad guerrero junior in second place. I mean this guy continues to rake in three eighteen. He's got thirty five home runs. Eighty seven rb but he has struggled here over his past seven games which is a big reason. Why that gap has furthered itself over the past two weeks and the last seven games. He's hitting only one seventy nine with the two fifty eight on. Base percentage three twenty. One slugging percentage. So that is a huge dropoff from his season. Numbers of three eighteen with thirty five home runs is he is only one one home run in his last seven games now over his last fifteen only hidden to sixty seven with three home runs a three thirty three on base percentage. So over the past month. Vlad guerrero is kind of flattened out and it's a wonder if the long year is starting to wear on him as he is still early in his career at the age of twenty two trying to grind through the completion of a one hundred and sixty two game season but his for the year. I mean in oak still of one thousand one point zero four seven and on base percentage over four hundred so he has been excellent but his last seven games. There is reason why shohei has really pulled away and again shohei. Otani is your leader at the top of the list. I mean this year so far. Let's see i have his pitching stats up in front of me. Let's pull over to as offensive side this year. He is sitting to sixty nine with thirty seven home. Runs major league leading an eighty. Two rb is so his. His average has dropped off here as offensively. He's gone into a bit of a slump. He said one twenty five over the last seven games to thirty three over the last fifteen and only two thirty eight over his last thirty games. He hasn't hit a home run in his last seven games. But even with this recent slump his odds have increased and continued increase just due to what he's been able to do not only at the dish but on the mount and pitching so far. This season is number seemed to get better and better. I mean if you're looking at his pitching stats on the click over here to get to his pitching stats on the season. He is six and one in sixteen starts for an angels team that is under five hundred so only one loss on the year for shohei ohtani on a team under five. Hundred is absolutely fascinating. His era is back under three. It's at two nine three for the year and eighty six innings. He also has one hundred six strikeouts to only thirty six walks in those eighty six innings striking out one point two guys per nine innings giving up a one ninety batting average against his whip. One point zero nine. He's been very good and he's been good over the past month. His last seven games. Thirty eight innings. Four no three point zero three he has slash fifteen games. Two point nine ninety six and one record so this guy continues to do it all both offensively as well as on the mounts. I mean your leader in home runs like i mentioned with thirty seven is pitching stats are excellent and just doing it. All at a high level is certainly the reason why he is at the top of the list when it comes to the mvp and he's been ahead of everybody all the way. Since april i mean. He started middle of the pack but since april sixth. He's been your lowest odds to win the mvp award. And now all the way at minus seven fifty certainly the favorites and i think deservedly sell again. This guy's been electric one of the best talents across major league baseball so i got no problem with him being one of the biggest favorites when it comes to the mvp award in the american league but that does it for today's episode episode in the books for you guys appreciate you guys listening. I mean just to wrap things up talking about jr richard at the top of the episode. What could have been for his career. I mean here's a guy in houston astros. History third in strikeouts third innings. I in this second in that and a guy only pitch ten years up until age thirty. I mean i'm thirty two years old..

And there's video involving rory mcilroy and something that happened during his round today. That is absolutely insane. We're going to bring that to you in a few minutes but rob you. We had the conversation earlier this hour about the all star game. And you know you're going next week you're going to be covering it and and al to in korea are not going and clearly all eyes are going to be on shohei otani with the first half he is having but when it comes to baseball players look otani has been the guy and you ask any baseball fan. Who's the guy you want to watch. the most. You know otani is going to be the top a lot of lists. He is not at the top of your list. He's not it's fernando petits. Junior and i know people are gonna go. He makes too many errors. And that'll be you're not going to disqualify this guy this guy and otani. I'm not tearing down otani to prop up tattoos. I'm not because otani is all that he was advertised to be. He's been unbelievable will probably win the american league. Mvp the pitching those over one hundred miles an hour. "League east is a very tough division. Finally caitlyn as we talked about. Guerrero is currently at the top of just about every offensive statistic in the american league if he can sustain this level of play for the entire season. do you think he can make a run at the mvp trophy. I think that he can make a run at it and i think that as long as he sustains display be in the conversation up until the very end of course when you play in the american league you are always competing with a guy named mike trout. He's injured right now but he is sort of a yearly contender for the mvp. Because he's the best player in the league also on the angels. You have shohei ohtani doing things that i never thought i would see in my lifetime so when you look at what he has been able to do. That's pretty stiff competition for flat. I think that one sort of thing that could help flat is if the blue jays stay in the playoff conversation if they are in of race for the playoffs Timbre and he is really being the mvp of his team. He's kind of really powering. The blue jays offense. I think that he'll probably stay in the conversation. I also think that this is like we talked about. Maybe his first breakout campaign. But i think that this level of play is fairly sustainable player like him and so if he's not necessarily going to win. Mvp this year. Because of you know whatever. I do think that he could be one of those guys who the year to year candidate. Well thank you so much kaitlyn for breaking this all down those great and i'm really looking forward to seeing how vlad finishes the season and the same with the blue jays awesome. "Love off forty two pounds. He looks better. he is playing better. You can just see the difference in his game. He looks more agile. he looks more fit. His flexibility has improved his strength and conditioning stuff. And you're kind of seeing that play out. I think the defensive play. It's been quite noticeable. Zoubek over the quicker that i'll say that's the word to describe. All i did quicker on all aspects of my game right now. I feel a lot quicker on on everything. Defensively on offense. He looks like he's also handling the sort of the mental side of the game. Better doesn't look like he's ever really thrown from a bad game or a bad at bat. It looks like he's still very confident in his own abilities so he can go out there and he knows what he's able to do and i think that's been really important for him this year. What his teammates and coaches had to say about guerrero's breakout season. So bogus for example has been playing with ladd for quite a number of years right now and they have a sort of special bond because we played together for a really long time and they also understand each other's lives very well because they're both sons of major leaguers. Obviously boba shat. Is the son of dante bichette. Who played in the majors quite a long time. And so they have a special bond. And every time you ask bo you know. What do you think of play this year. It's always well. We knew this would happen. It's awesome to see. i mean you know. He's been through a lot last couple years in the see him. Put the work in And then see it translate to saudi. I mean i've seen what a great player. He wise in the minor leagues. And this is what we knew he could be. I think he's only really scratching the surface of what is capable of. you know. I think he can be the best hitter in the game so to see what he's doing right now is is really fun to see. He's also vladi is a player. That is always thinking of the team. I. he's reading his teammates. If you watch video of dugout celebrations must often. You'll see right at the front and center of any kind of celebration because he just loves to win. He loves his teammates. He loves to see his teammates succeed. So everyone in. The organization is exceptionally happy for him because of the type of person of the type of team mate and the type of player that he is well. One unexpected resolved that offseason where it has been some pretty incredible flexibility at first base. Troll bouchette scope bike a row and they save two rows right there. What a what a stretch five laddy now caitlyn you recently ask several. Other athletes about guerrero's eyebrow raising split. So what did they tell you about that. You know early. On in the season he was basically breaking out in these pretty full on splits at first base. And so i talked to a yoga instructor. I talked to a ballet dancer. I talked to. Nhl golian and you know a lot of what they said to me was one. They were just impressed that he was able to do it. Because you know baseball's not necessarily a sport that you would associate with Flexibility so that really was impressive for them. I spoke with canadian. Gold medalists gymnasts. Kyle felt and he said i think they are just visually impressive. And i think it's a relatable skills because everybody every human on the planet has tried to do the splits and not. Everybody can do it. So i think there's a great appreciation for the flexibility. Another thing that was impressive. Which is the amount of sort of like strength and coordination that you would need to pull off that move. Because it's not so much like a gymnast. Going down tune splits as i understand it. It's more like sort of a slow graceful maneuver to get into a splits and gymnasts. Where's lattice kind of just like really bursting into them. What actually goes into my mind is like oh my gosh. He's really like dropping into the past you know. Generally an athlete will like place themselves in the splits. But he kind of does his pig steph. And i think that's part of the lower of it. And i think for jays fans in particular i think it just sort of kind of encapsulate that transformation that vlad has gone through in the last couple years and people just love watching him do the switch. It's very fun to see. And as we've heard and as you said. Many teammates and coaches say this is the first season where they're really seeing the real vlad guerrero so along those lines. Do you think this level of play is what we can expect from him for the rest of the season and in years to come. Well i certainly think that there's a lot of underlying metrics that would suggest that this is sustainable for him. One of the things. That's really always been sort of vlad. He's calling card has been his plate discipline and we're seeing that so in the minor leagues. He was always known to take walks. He didn't really strike out a lot. And now that is happening in the major leagues so those are always really good signs. One other promising thing is that he hit the ball in the air. A lot more this year so that suggests that his swing is a lot better. he's feeling at more and so to see him hitting the ball off the ground more that generally leads to more success as well so it doesn't feel like this is sort of just a hot streak and we're going on two months into the season now so that's a pretty good sample size layer of him. Basically sustaining this level. And i don't really have any reason to believe that he would let up every season this great. But he's been playing remarkably well and this is kind of what people said. The real would be brought to you by the capital. One saver card with saver. So many things have happened to the blue jays so far this year like moving stadiums devastating injuries but also some great performances so on top of all that they're currently in an extremely competitive alias. So do you think this team is able to overcome these ups and downs and they have the ingredients to make playoff push over the remaining two thirds of the season. Yeah i mean. I think that the blue jays have sort of played to expectation so far and one of the big factors is obviously this. The major offseason acquisition was george springer and he was brought into the blue jays best player. He really hasn't played this year. He played four games. And so i think the fact that really he hasn't played for the blue jays. This year suggests that there's still a lot. This team can accomplish the season once. He's back in the lineup. He's going to be a huge lift to their lineup. Marcus semion has been as important to this team. As vlad i think his play in the past month of may vlad set a high bar. And marcus had an amazing may and i should add oscar hernandez also having a really great season for the blue jays as well so they do have some guys putting up excellent offensive numbers right now and i think that's part of the reason why the offense has been quite strong for this team. The one question mark that we're experiencing right now the blue jays of the bullpen. They started out very good. They had an excellent april. Not so much of a great may injuries have certainly impacted that roster allot and so this month it will be interesting to see if they can get some guys back. Add to their depth in the bullpen. And see if that area can stabilized. Because i do think the offense is enough for this team to be one of the best in the american league by as you said the american.

"The american league's current home. Run king is a name. That's familiar to most baseball fans vladimir guerrero junior breaking fear. That's a be close. It's three years ago. Guerrero was considered one of the most exciting prospects in baseball. But he didn't quite live up to the hype during his first few seasons in the show today the athletics caitlyn mcgrath joins us to talk about how glad junior overcame those early struggles to find. Mvp caliber form in twenty twenty one. And if the guerrero we're seeing now is here to say it doesn't feel like this is sort of just a hot streak and we're going on two months into the season now so i don't really have any reason to believe that he would let up from wondering in the athletic. I'm tiffany ocean sqi. It's monday june seven and this is the lead. Okay caitlyn as we all know. The blue jays have been unable to play in their home stadium. Toronto they'd been marooned down in florida since the pandemic shut everything down last march and now they're back north but across the lake in buffalo new york so as the team's beat reporter. Are you disappointed about missing out on both the beach and now the wings well not so much the wings. Because i don't eat meat. So i'm not missing much but i i will say i do love buffalo. I've been there a few times. Obviously the blue jays have had their affiliate there and being from toronto. It's a very close drive over there and it's a cool city. I think an underrated city. I'm all about buffalo. But yeah like. It's been a challenge covering the team from afar. The last couple seasons here well. One of the bright spots of covering this team has to be watching vladimir guerrero. Junior played day in day out. Now vlad's time in the majors from celebrated prospect to mvp hopeful. Hasn't been a line exactly but before we get into that. Can you just give a quick snapshot of just how good this guy has been this season. Yeah it's really been. I would say like a breakout campaign for vladimir grow junior and it's funny to hear breakout and vladi grou- junior in the same sentence because he was such a hyped prospect and seen how he's been able to play this year it's looks like he's kind of delivering on all that hype that was around him a couple years ago. Senator this is long over the hitters. I in beeps feel. He's hitting the ball exceptionally well. He looks calm and composed at the plate. His plate discipline is about as good as you can ask for drills a ball right center field added and that was a beautiful at bat. Took a fastball inside. Because it wasn't a pitchy was looking for and gets a breaking ball out over the plate and drills it like if you look at some of the offensive numbers he's got the best in the major leagues leads all the majors in van graphs war on. So that's just kind of combining the offensive and defensive play after the first pitch at ripped off the wall down in the corner guerrero. We'll get into second base with a sly head of the trump. He's been a huge difference maker for the blue jays and honestly like a team that is looking to get better this season. This is a season where they want to sort of. Make a push in the al which is not an easy thing to do. And without the play of vlad guerrero junior. They would not be where they are right now. Well a reason game against the nationals. Which really seem to be an exclamation point on what's been this breakout season. So can you walk us through what happened that night. Show here you go this matchup. Everybody's looking for basis loaded one vlad guerrero against match sir zor. Obviously that was the game that he hit three home runs drive. Get up fog. Grand swam for bradey junior. Leave jayson stark. One of our baseball reporters here said that glad grow senior. Never hit three home runs in a game. So that's something that vlad juniors abrahams do mind you again in only in his third season but his dad never was able to g gotta try his second home run of the night to straight away center. Two of those home runs. Came against max. Scherzer like future hall of famer max scherzer and then another one came to kind of give him the hat trick over. That was the first game where you look so completely locked in. And i will say that you should never expect a player to be able to hit three home runs in a game like it's extraordinary. But the way the vlad was playing that month the way he's continued to play. It's almost like not surprising when he does that. It just looks almost effortless. That when he hit three home runs or like yeah. Da runs in a game. Like that's what he does now. Yeah he's pretty amazing. So looking back guerrero was one of the most hyped young players in baseball as you said when he was coming through the blue jays system. I mean this is a guy who famously hit home run off a hotel roof in the minor leagues deep. Left field could a hotel. It hits the hilton garden during his first she seasons in the majors guerrero struggled a little bit to live up to those mythical expectations so what was going wrong for him during his first few seasons with the blue jays. Yeah i think there was a few factors at play. I think that part of it was. Yeah the hype was huge around him at the same time. I'm not sure that anything that he would have done. What if lived up to that hype. It was extreme. And so i think that there was a lot of attention on him. Which would tough to deal with as a young player. And i think that it just took him some time to get accustomed to major league pitching. I think that. Sometimes we don't quite conceptualize the difference between minor league pitching in major league pitching and vlad with such a special talent in the minor leagues that he was able to just kind of out. Hit minor league pitching very effortlessly. I think he was just his talent with so much above and so there was a lot of things that were going right for him. The minor leagues and i think it was just a bit of a big jump and we have to keep in mind that he was quite young when he made his debut he was only twenty as a really young and so i think that it's kind of took him some time to just kind of understand the major league lifestyle the routines that he needed to gain plan properly to know how are gonna approach him to make those adjustments and it looks like it's all kinda come together for him this year and how has he managed to turn that around the season. Can you talk about the regimen. Change this off season that has helped impact lead success and has taken his game to the next level. One of the of story lines that emerged last year was that he wasn't in his best physical shape especially after the shutdown and he came back during summer camp for the sixty game season and he really wasn't in the best shape moldova. Wouldn't off me. You grow the last couple of years. They knew i was coming here out of shape on prepare myself very well. I said that. All and i felt like at that moment that my team. They an apology for me. And he was disappointed in himself and he actually was quite candid. He apologized to his teammates. He sort of vowed that he would get in better shape in credit to him. he did. Grade yellow pathology lewis. I wanna make sure to. Parts of my game were ready and But yeah go we focus on the way laws on as i right now. I.

"And no music and just tell stories and it's really fun so so you mentioned you want to do that with your kids sometimes just have that kid time where you laugh with the kids over whatever and I think that's great keep that going because as they they get older they wanna be with their friends and they leave the house and then you don't have as much of those times so when you do have them they're even more special because they're just they're so limited so enjoy 'em while you can and you have an unlimited now because your kids aren't like picking up and walking out the door by themselves are kids do that at exit oh you're like whoa how even coming home for for dinner there's those moments you gotta just enjoy yeah I agree I came across something a couple of days ago in a book I'm reading reading and the guys talking about his family and not giving his kids leftover dad not giving his wife Leftover wife and I think that something that's really hit home for me made me kind of analyze. Hey what version of me are my kids getting is my wife wife. Getting are my friends getting. Are they getting leftover version of me. Meaning they're getting. What's leftover of me? After I've devoted all of my time and energy to my work or whatever it is or are they getting the full version of me. Am I fully presence in my there. Are we making these memories. Are we taking advantage. You have this time that we have together so I am working on giving them full. I prepared Chris Verses his leftover. Chris what do you think about that concept. Well I'll take leftovers anytime. Sometimes they taste better but I agree with you. You know what I do. Think that were pulled in a lot of directions first of all with work and liability or maybe responsibilities. So we've got stuff to do so it is a little bit taxing. Just say I can give you. You know the first version of me the best version me at all times but if you keep it on your mind when you go into a situation you're coming home maybe you stand on the curb or maybe standing on the front step for just a moment take a deep breath got a I got a rally here I got to show. I'm Superman for my kids for the next hour while I'm home even though I got forty things I didn't get done today and I want to. You know I just wanted to decompress but they wanna see you you and they want to see the best of you so agree that leftover dad is sometimes better than no dad. But if you're around try and give them the training giving the first batch if you will. Yeah I like that. It's definitely something that I don't think any of us can do at all times but I think if it's if we're aware of bit then we're more likely to try to stay focused when it's time to stay focused on the tasks that we have. Throughout the course of the day I reread. Read something this morning about working out our focus muscles right. It's really easy to get distracted by our phone or whatever when we're doing a task ask but it's it's like working out a muscle to actually stay focused on the task at hand and the more that we practice that kind of fight through it a a little bit sometimes. It's just not possible but the more that we can actually be intentional about staying focused. I'm going to try to stay focused for five more minutes even reaching reaching the end of my rope here. That's going to help us down the line so working out. That muscle is something that I've been thinking about as well when we you talk about focus. Let me ask you Chris. Are you finding that you're able to focus on tasks work Writing Grading at whatever you're doing doing even just cleaning house. Are you able to focus two minutes for every one that you don't fuck focus. Are you like two minutes of good. Focus one minute where I'm not not really quite present to two one. Two one is three to one. Are you able to do five straight minutes where you're totally zone and then maybe one minute while you don't feel you're in his own. Can you quantify that. I'm I'm like two to one right now and I don't think it's enough. It's better than one the one but two two ones just cutting it for me. But I'm curious what you think you might be at it. That's a really good question. And it's hard to quantify without really thinking about it. I would say say that I am very similar to you. I would say that It's probably something that I beat myself up about a lot. Like not being able to stay focused. As long as I think I should be able to stay focused and as long as I know I need to be able to stay focused in order to get something done that I really want to get done. And and I gotTA think that most of us are in the same boat. I really do I would say for me. It's probably more to one as well because sometimes maybe I feel like man. I'm in a groove right here but then other times I'm like I can't even I can't even like sit down and think about the focusing on this task that I know I have to get done. I'd rather do anything that that happens once a day versus finding zone. Maybe once like I would I would even say to one sometimes feels like that might be too high like it. It's definitely something that I struggle with and I think I think everybody struggles with it if we're being honest with ourselves. Yeah I know sometimes I'm just one to two. I'm doing one productive minute. Two minutes of not productive but I think if you could get to forty minutes of an hour or you're really focused and twenty minutes of screwing around that's two to one. You feel an okay but really where you make the impact would be you know. Every fifty he minutes is on ten minutes of off five to one. Wouldn't that be nice because it said two to one is not strong enough but five to one is and it's really only ten minutes so if you go forty minutes on and twenty off that's two to one but if you go fifty minutes and ten minutes that's completely different than two to one hour five to one right and it's just ten minutes. How do we do it? I don't have the answer here. I'm just bringing it up because I need. I need help out there. I need help from you. And whoever else I need to get more focused I know if I got an extra ten minutes every hour of the day of Focus. I'd get way more done. What is my issue is its social media is that I want to check out? The Vlad Guerrero of the Blue Jays hit got any hits last night. You know I mean I don't know but it's something that's on my mind and I just wanted to ask you know thank you for asking and I think it's important that we both both share this and I think anybody listening to this is nodding their heads. I really do. I really think that this is something that we all feel and I think that we all well beat ourselves up about it and I think we're all striving to find that optimal level focus. I know I'm always tweaking things in my life. All right what do I gotTa do here. Do I got to work out earlier to workout more throughout the day. Do I have to drink my coffee at ten. AM instead of nine fifteen am. Like I'm always thinking about. How can I maximize my focus? And I gotta be honest with for forty three years. I still haven't figured it out and and I don't know if we ever figure it out I think just being aware of it. First and foremost is is a good thing. But I don't know maybe we throw it out to our listeners. Tips tricks that you have to stay focused that John and I might be able to use our lives to To feel better are about the amount of focus rebel to to have throughout the course of a regular day. Yeah I'd love to hear from others out there especially I had a chance to go to to luncheon yesterday and here Ken Blanchard. Too Long Time you know Leadership Guru and he. He he did the one minute manager book which I read in high school and then he is the new one minute manager book and he has like forty fifty other books he sold over twenty twenty million copies. He's about eighty years old but he said something about change and change yesterday he said listen. It's not enough just to announce the change that's the start of it. You want to announce you WANNA make that change John and Chris. You want to change the way you're focusing right all right but what are we going to do to after we say that now we have to manage the change. Because that's the whole part of it is to manage the change so That's where I'm at. We just focus here guys. We need to focus more on focusing focus the focus. Okay and that's my two cents cents on that. Let's work at that. Give us some ideas and let's circle back on this one. Chris because I think we just we need. We need to focus in on this. I agree focus the focus. Let's do that. Let's see what our listeners come up with and Do thanks for the conversation. This was This was deep. This was fun. "All right. It's flat time. It's it's it's that time, obviously, I think those who haven't done off season drafts yet are probably jarred by the price. But this is where he's been throughout the offseason from from step one really kind of that third that third round pick that really ranging from second. Fifth round really tight band there for Vlad Guerrero was going forty before the overall first question is, of course, are you paying that premium in NFC style to where where you know, you're going for the overall prize? Maybe you're trying to spike that that giant season is Vlad John you're someone that you're willing to pay this premium on and knowing you're gonna miss, you know, couple of weeks out front, but you will be able to replace him to is unlikely that I will that being said, I really contemplated it in the in the NFC draft. I'm doing right now, it's a dry draft and hold fifty round draft hole. I had the first overall pick took trout on the way back. I had two starting pitchers queued up one of them went. I ended up grabbing Severino and then kind of just being stuck with. Oh, Hulu, I take here at at pick thirty or thirty one. And I came really close. Talking myself into grow knowing that there was no way he was gonna make it back. Yeah. That being said, I couldn't I couldn't pull the trigger and it it's actually kinda surprising his ADP's as low as it is. Because considering we saw we saw kazlo, isn't it? Well, we saw people clear linked took him with eighteen th overall in. Yeah. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. He he ranged second. He's in a second to fifth round type of range. Klay linked did take him in the second round here. As you look at the range that we're looking at right now, he's his men pick is thirty two. Does getting since January first since January first nobody has taken him in the second round. Which is okay. Let's totally fine. I'm just surprised more than anything else. Here's my issue with lot. And I I know he's a premium talent. And I think steamer projected him. There is projecting him to win the ale. Batting title. Yeah. Which I think is insane. But that just that just kinda shows you what kind of talent he is. I think that there isn't because he's not gonna steal probably a single base own less. It's you know on a catcher not really caring like there. There's some capped upside, I guess and even like the steamer projections or the projection systems don't have them hitting like forty home runs. So I have a hard time buying into him being a second round or third around player. Well, I mean, what's the difference between him and Juan Soto? I have a hard time. One sodas going Soto. Thirty seconds. Yeah. Well, I hard time. I just said I would I would take. I take Kris Bryant over one. So. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's clear. I didn't know that you had issues with one. So no, I don't I mean, I love Lonzo to as a player. But I think he's an overrated fantasy commodity because of his age and what he did last year. I think that's fair. And maybe maybe Vlad it's too. But I was. Like all the projection systems, no projection system. We've got on the site has been projected for more than twenty four home runs. Yeah. Z, and you know, he's not gonna steal basis. I know they all project him for five to six long bases. It he steals three bases. I'll be surprised. It's just a matter of like they think he's going to hit for three hundred. But the projections have met three hundred and projections are notoriously conservative. So I mean, he could realistically hit three twenty. That's massive three twenty averages. System like some whoever's running these projections just have him in Monte on their fantasy team. And they're just trying to. Story cly conservative. Talents. That speaks to what these guys have done particularly Vlad in his minor league career. You know, tons all talked about it breaking his system because you do the minor league the major league equivalents and all that. And it comes out with these just gaudy numbers..
