Renewables could help Caribbean become more hurricane-resilient
"I'm Dr Anthony Lahser wits, and this is climate connections. When hurricane strike the Caribbean entire highlands are sometimes left without power. That's because there's usually just one power plant and one electricity grid pilot. So if that one grid goes down, the entire island can go dark for days weeks or even months. caitlyn bunkers with a nonprofit rocky mountain institute. She's Co author of a study that shows that one way to minimize this risk is to add renewables that are connected to micro grids. These systems can operate independently from the larger grid bunker. Says that after hurricanes. And Maria. We identified some examples in places like the British Virgin Islands. The Turkey silence where those installations came through the storms themselves. Okay and we're able to be providing power at least locally to the nearby buildings and infrastructure that needed power more quickly than the remainder of the grid, which took a bit longer to be able to restore and reconnect. Bunker. Says adding solar for example, would not only help islands recover after hurricanes it would also create new job opportunities. So renewable and decentralized energy can both provide jobs and strengthen the resiliency of the Caribbean.

What will be in the next stimulus bill?
"Get right into it. I, want to ask about the economic outlook to get numbers this morning on detail sale showing up pretty nice rebound in June. But then on the other hand, you have seventeen million Americans a still touring to unemployment insurance. And that you couple it with the epidemiological numbers I. Guess I'm just wondering, do you still see the baseline as a recovery in the second half of this year as I? Think you said back can. You highlighted a bunch of cross-currents it were trying to analyze and understand, and of course, the just an enormous amount of uncertainty and the uncertainty really stems directly with the you know the corona virus in the end pandemic and and how that behaves and and how effective and successful the efforts to contain it at the same time to bring the economy. Back up to full speed. So right now, the way I'm reading is still consistent with you know how you described and I've been talking about it. I, expect the second half to be a continued a period of economic recovery. But it's still you know we're in a very deep hole unemployment is over eleven percent. We have a long ways to go to get back to full strength My hope is is though that will continue to see positive signs of a gradual recovery over the second half. Half of this year into next year. But right now, this is camp critical inflection point. We're seeing these mixed signals in different states where the states where the case The number of new cases has been rising or definitely seen people back from going to restaurants, and in other things, wound states like where I am in New York around here, we are still seeing steady improvement in terms of people getting back to work and going out to restaurants and things like that. So it's IT'S A. Complicated situation and were watching all that you know high frequency data very closely to see what's going on. So, something that was interesting from the Beige Book, that was just released yesterday that in New York. This was the case in many other districts as well. Are there were stories of furloughed workers that have now been laid off permanently and I guess I'm wondering what you're seeing specifically in the second district covers New York Arts of new, Jersey Connecticut of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands. What are you seeing there? You mentioned also earlier this morning that you think it's going to essential for fiscal authorities. Quote, put cash directly in the hands of Americans based off of what you're seeing the district. What would that look like is that an extension of Ui maybe more picky P, for example. Yes. So what we are seeing and what I'm hearing is definitely that this obviously is a situation where a lot of employers don't have demand for their products and services whether you're restaurants or other. You know businesses They are having to to lay off workers despite their efforts, and despite the PGA and other programs have been there to provide a support of businesses and obviously to the unemployed. And households more generally. So I, I would take to kind of signals from what we're seeing is obviously, this is going to be a longer more drawn out period of getting through the pandemic I. think that you know work businesses are struggling because they don't have revenue state local governments are struggling because they don't have a tax revenue or other sources of revenue right now, and I do think an important lesson of the past few months, the federal actions and I really don't think of this is stimulus that really think of these actions to to help support Basically, grants and transfers to households and businesses has been absolutely critically important it's meant the people who've lost their jobs have been able to continue to pay the ramp of food on the table. It's also the pre program which you know is obviously had his challenges has been I've heard this from businesses or district has been effective and getting money to the small businesses. So they can keep going and hopefully come back. So my lesson from this disease have been effective tools. I'm not saying what Congress should or shouldn't do specifically, but this has been effective at dealing with the situation through July and I think you know are there are lessons to draw from bad in terms of? Guinness. The next six months. In, the meantime, the Federal Reserve has pin interest rates near zero. But I want to chat something fun. Now, forward, guidance right and I know that you can only speak for yourself. But what's your preferred method of messaging to the market? How long you will keep rates at zero bound especially now that there's been this discussion as the minutes of noted of federal. Reserve officials be playing around with the idea of an objective base or guidance that perhaps might be pinned to inflation, for example. Well as you know over the recovery period and the expansion following the global financial crisis, we did use for guidance pretty aggressively and I think very successfully starting in two thousand eleven. We did try different versions of. What we call, you know database versus you know contingent. Guidance and I think what the lessons from that is, you know win market expectations for the public understanding of what the Fed's likely to do gets out of sync with our own thinking for guidance has has proven to be helpful to help people understand how reviewing Monte policy. You know right now I actually think that are are the guidance we have in there, which is maybe more kind of descriptive informal or guidance his serving as well. So we do have some time to think about how we should. Should evolve that guidance is going as we go forward to me. The critical thing is, what's the problem we're trying to solve right now, we're still trying to fit you know all of us were trying to figure out where is the economy going today? Where is it likely to go in and learn from the experience of you over the next few months, and from that position, we can really I think considering and decide what's the best way to describe our thinking around the future path of a Monte policy. And, link that obviously. To our. Objectives of cheating the maximum employment and price stability goals. Now on inflation something. That's interesting that we're hearing from other Fed officials is where do you shoot the target as we know is two percent for the reserve. But what we've seen over the past recovery since is that that has been undershot on, which is hard to kind of stimulate inflation. How does that guide your thinking for

Parenting In A Pandemic
"Fellow parents in the community I am sure you feel me when I say this past couple of months have been rough. So today Dr Anne. Louise, Lockhart is back to chat about what it looks like two parent through a pandemic. Dr Lockhart is. Psychologist parent coach in the business owner of a new day, pediatric psychology in San Antonio Texas. Born and raised on the island of Saint Croix in the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Doctor Lockhart has a doctorate in clinical psychology and is board certified in clinical child and adolescent psychology. She's worked in both military and civilian. Setting Dr. Lockhart, and I chatted about the benefits of routine and structure right now. Managing Your own and your child's anxiety about cities reopening. What kinds of things we should be considering about school in the fall and how to have conversations with our kids and our schools about racism and racial trauma. If. You hear something while listening. They're resonates with you. Please be sure to share with us on social media using the Hashtag t BG in session. Here's our conversation. Thank you so much joining us against today Dr Luckily. For inviting me. Yes, always a pleasure to chat with you and I was like we gotta get her back. Because the last time you shared such great information about co-regulation right and that was before all of our lives turned upside down right. Exactly like I have been trying to listen to the episode on repeat like okay. How can I regulates today? Because, it feels like all that good stuff you shared. I'm really struggling to try to figure out. I would imagine that lots of other parents are too so I'm curious to hear how the DEMOC and everything that has been happening his really just kind of did everything we were doing. It's parenting Oh. Yeah, definitely I mean before all this happened. I mean as you know, and as some people know or may not know. Is that when you are needing to prepare for a life altering event many times we have some kind of preparation. Right or we know that it's coming or at least have an idea. Have some kind of file system has experienced something similar right, and then this pandemic hit and we're like wait. Wait, I don't have a file for pandemics. I don't know what to do when a global I mean. I've seen movies on it. But. I don't know what I'm supposed to do and so. I think what has caused some such an upheaval, because for many people like here in Texas we were literally on Spring, break and ending it when we heard the news, and then we told our kids. Hey, guys. Spring break is extended and gay. If extended some more Mike. Okay they're like so are. When are we going back probably in April? Okay, maybe okay, maybe August. Right and so I think that we we really didn't know how to prepare like. How do you prepare for being home twenty four seven with your spouse and your kids? Nonstop. And then maybe not be able to go to work or work differently. Teach your kids, I mean it was. It was a crazy adjustment it was. It was very difficult and I. think that's what makes it so much harder that we didn't have anything to relate it to. And no kind of system to compare it to Yeah, that's what I have found. I think just so overwhelming I said our last conversation talked about like how important it is to make sure that you're taking care of yourself so that you can then extend your kids. And in this situation we were all just thrown into working from home. And then you're trying to school from home and you can't even. Even like move about the world in the same ways that you were in, so it just felt like lots and lots of demands on your time in resources without very many ways of really kind of releasing it exactly and I think what was happening for a lot of people including myself is the things that we would normally do. We could not do anymore so like I love me some retail therapy. I couldn't go anywhere, nor did I want to. You know getting together with friends. Social distancing going to the movies can't do that. Go to the zoo. That's closed, I mean everything. Everything we do with our kids or for ourselves you literally could not do. And I think that's what so much harder is that Nicole? Regulation and be able to regulate and manage and balanced. Your time is all fighting good when you have the option, but when you literally have no options. You have to get very very creative with how you do that. so now it feels like some parts of the country are opening back up right like I. Know We'll here. In Georgia there are several things that have been open even for a couple of weeks ago. We are staying put, but things are opening up again now and so I'm wondering if you have ideas about how we might be able to do that with our families in a way, that feels they've. Yes, that's a great great question. Because now, a lot of places are opening up including San Antonio, but we as you said are put as well. I think that's where you have to really do your research and look to see what kind of measures are put in place, and then again talk to your family about how they feel how you can do that gradually and safely, and how you can start to get into the world in a way, that feels right for you so for example couple of weeks ago every three weeks now. My family and I decided to go find a lake to go to. So we can get outside and be in nature. They were all closed, so that made it a little bit difficult, but we were still able to go to a park and hang out together a getting takeout from a restaurant and having a picnic somewhere outside being able. Hang out together. Being able to hang out with family, we actually hung out with our inlaws twice because we know that they've been quarantined, isolated and social distance just like us, and a initially felt uncomfortable, and my son told me he felt uncomfortable and I acknowledged that I also felt that way as well too, and that it was okay to feel that way. Because! It had been three months since he thought Persson in person

"So tell getting recognized for what we do is tell us about sale like Hefner. How did it occur to you to do this? Well, so my husband, and I have been sailing for quite a while. And we would go to places like Tampa Bay Corpus Christi at the Kola where they would offer thinly charters. So we got the idea after doing that a few times about doing it on like Hefner. We thought if they can do that on the coast. Why can't we do this on our beautiful lake right in the middle of the city? We asked around the people would be interested people that we knew and they were like sure, yes. I would I would pay to have you take me sailing since I don't know how to sail, and so that's kind of how we got the the brainchild of starting the business. So yeah, that's what we do. So when some context you go through what you do. Okay. Well, we have our website, which is WWW dot faily, Hefner dot com. Tom, and we offered sailing charters this season. We're just doing the weekend. So Friday Saturday Sunday, and we have on our website all of the charters that are available. So you can go on a head of time, and you can find one that works for you that type of charter you want and the time that works for your schedule. And then what happens is you contact me. My number's listed you can Email me as well. And I'll get you on our calendar, and I'll send you confirmation giving you all the details. Where to meet us what's expect and bring where and all of that. So that's what happens people just contact me. And I get him on the on the calendar. I hold their spot. And we meet them at the lake and we take them for sale. Will you were slogan is escape relax unwind tells about how you do this. What kind of boat? Do you have in? What are the different options? Okay. We have a twenty six foot sailboat, and it's called him on a whole and twenty six is doesn't sound super big. But it's also not small, but it's a perfect size for the lake. It allows us to have a maximum of six guests on board. There's plenty of room in the seating area where you're not crowded together and the six the six maximum is both for comfort with room to spread out a little bit safety. And that's also a a standard number of guests that you can take on your on your charter. That's that's true. Like, I said whether you're in corpus crispy or Tampa Bay air wherever that's just a standard maximum number of guests. You can have on board. So what we do is we pay where team my husband, David as a captain. And I am you're right. I'm the first mate or the crew. And what we do is. We do all we do all the work, quote, unquote work. And so we we get to do all everything and our guest just sit back and enjoy the ride so and and it works out great. Because a lot of our guests have never been sailing before. So I guess it gives them an opportunity failing like and even some guests have never even been on a boat alone of about. So it's been it's been a great fun experience to introduce failing to a lot of people. And actually we've seen people that have failed with us one season. And the next season they bought their own boats and they're waving at us from their own boat. We're sailing by. Time that probably makes you feel very successful doesn't it? It does we've affected people's lives. We've we've set them on a new journey and let them find a new passion. So just like what we have been. That's that was kind of an added benefit that we didn't even realize that we would get once we started this. Well, I was impressed with your qualifications. So talk about both your in David's qualifications. If you would. David has been failing much longer than I have. So he came to Oklahoma in. I think nineteen eighty four with the air force, and he was looking for a hobby. So he in a buddy started. They took win surfing windsurfing is a great way to start to understand the wind and how it affects your sales. But even though it wasn't a sailboat he was he had a crash course literally some days on how to operate and harness the win and from there. He got a Hobie cat, which is was a little pun tune. But with a trampoline in the middle again, it's a sailing vessel. And he introduced me to sailing at that point, and I fell in love with it. And so from there, we we continue to to play with the Hobie cat and two thousand three we took a sailboat charter in the US Virgin Islands where we lived on board a sailboat for a week. And that's when are true passion began for sailing. We just fell in love with. That we fell in love with Virgin Islands. And then when we came back we bought our own boat. And then that's when Hefner started, and you are certificates. I think is the right word because you have credentials as well. Yes, I do. I do David has gotten his U S coast guard, captain Bligh since which is really impressive is it's it's not an easy thing to pain. And so he's had that for several years now, and I have gone through courses through the American sailing association where I'm also qualified to be a captain. I just don't have the the coast guard license that so you've got to experienced people on board that know what to do. And how to keep our guests eighth. And so ever get everybody time as well. And I bet in Oklahoma. That's a thrill because the way our weather changes everything. Hand is insane. From the start of charter to the individual. You can have the wind changed three different times. And it can be challenging we've been up and said, it's actually harder to sail negatives in the Virgin Islands because the winds there are so steady and constant and article Homa wins can be a challenge for sure. So actually people probably don't realize it. But like Hefner has been rated one of the top ten in when sailing lakes and the US so arguable part of the like Wednesday night regatta people as well. We we don't we're so busy on the weekends. I'm sailing. And so we just we take the week off to recover and recuperate, but the they do that regatta at the boat club there on the lake and so there have been times when we're kind of watching it from the periphery on a Saturday 'cause they'll do it on Saturday afternoons as well. So we try to stay out of their way 'cause they take their racing very serious. And we're just out to have a good time. Now. How does Dave windsurf anymore? Not anymore. He gave it up when we got to be very busy with their like have ner. We just didn't have any time to to play otherwise that. So he he gave up his windsurfing for the for the the sailboat. I can understand that. I don't think he's I don't think he's upset about that. Did you ever windsurf? I didn't I tried it twice and got very frustrated and just gave it up. So I could him so dream chaser. Is a real big. Yes. Okay. Well, let me tell you what we're going. Do. I'm going to have to take a commercial break. But when everybody grab their pencil because Robin Hurley's going to be giving out information of how you can contact her. And even reserve your charter on like Heffer, I understand they fill up very quickly. So Robin Harley is my guest and the businesses sale lake Hefner at sale lake Hefner dot com. We'll talk with you more when we come back, and you can tell us about all the different options. Okay. Robin. Found good. Thank you so much. I'm going Falkender Lippert. You're listening.

"It's if we really want to see a Besse wold, we've gotta get good at this and the banks are on the front line of on their processes that they use of so much sympathy full because the gnome is all you've got his paper document from somebody five years ago, and even worse than that, the banks are often relying on another Bank, and that knows another Bank that knows another buying just because of how payments work. So if I'm trying to move. Money around through five different companies through if apple wants to move some of its money from island to the Virgin Islands or whatever it might have to go through three banks to do it. There's no one central source for all of that information. But yet the one Bank that you have a relationship with their entirely on the hook for all of that money laundering risk. And the only thing they've got to try and prevent is your passport, you're right, and the the reputational damage here for Danske Bank is huge. What was really nice about that was it harks back to alien the show, as well as the you sort of framed quite nicely, the implications of fallout in the human story, right? Because you know, you hear money laundering, and that's just to sort of abstract home and you kind of move on with the rest of your day. But actually considering that human soy in that full lives coin. Everything from terrorist financing to even geopolitics in sanctions, like being close to what's happening in preventing money laundering. Also, the way we try and prevent money laundering is to insert a paper process that creates financial exclusion. In other words, we increase the cost of doing business to such a point at which people count remit money home on to their family people cone simply go about and set up a business because it's so expensive for the Bank to set up that business account for them to be profitable because of the way they do it because of the paper process. The use that now you're preventing economic activity in a given country or preventing people who are in lower incomes, all people who are at risk from having. I would actually say that what what would be the solution? Because the thing is like this don's Coban Quan. I think in a way like even though the oversee that got in another people have coveted isn't as big of a deal anymore because we saw this happened with HSBC can t thousand twelve. We saw it with other big banks as well. That has still. At this point being fined billions for having a system that has enabled money laundering. And so, yeah, it gets really complex when you have subsidiaries as well. There is no global platform. Is that even possible with different regulation, different countries. And so when it comes to paper system, youngster confused by love to know like what would be an on incentives. Right? So the big reason why people don't governments don't come down. Extremely hold on money laundering is because if you come down on how to money laundering, you also come down hard on commerce and business in your economy. So you the only way to prevent fraud is to kill your income. I not tree that doesn't have to be the case because the assumption is the only way you prevent fraud is by preventing it the way you used to. And so I think it's a lack of nation to it's not tagging it to the upside of having prevented that. I think it's a, it's a sales pitch. So what I think three and I'm going to hold a candle out for a district would legit. I really do think that you need a way in which banks can match the transactions. They have the fundamental problem of. I need to know that what I see is the same as what you see is why we have compliance departments chasing pieces of paper around and that can come through standards compensation through groups like, and it can come through banks genuinely wanting to do it and seeing not only cost reduction, but increased sales because they're now able to sell to clients countries and customers that they otherwise can address in a profitable way. But that's a, that's going to be a hard shift. I, I'm dating with those kind of issues in emerging markets context. Am I see exactly those reconciliation? She's there are meant their manual in the mobile money world never mind in the Bank world..
