"And makeup category. We're joined now by one of the nominees. Jamaica Wilson, Jamaica. Welcome. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you so much. So have you had time to let it sink in. Are you still working hard, huh? Am stare literally working hard. It's really hasn't It has sunk in with me. But just doing all the other things with the award seasoning happening. It's It's been a tough challenge for me. I can imagine because on the movie, you work with Viola Davis as her personal hair stylist, and you continue to work with her. And now it's awards season when even though everything still on zoom, people still want to look their best. Were there Some? I don't know. I I guessing having worked with Violet Davis before itwas you knew her. So you have that relationship, but tell us some of the challenges of doing hair for the film. First of all I'm used to doing modern hairstyling. So being that this was a 19 twenties film. It was a challenge for me because you know when she first offered the opportunity to me I had no idea of who my rainy wa So I had to do my research and discovered that it was a period film. And this was my first experience with a period film. So my challenge was, you know, making sure that I was able to do the 19 twenties air hairstyling. And then I discovered during the process that Mia was going to be coming along as the department head and she had already designed the wig, so that made it a little bit more easier for me. But the challenge really, for me was, you know, working with that era. I understand that the wigs were actually authentic to the era like they were made of. They were made of horsehair. Yeah, the waves were made of horsehair is very wild and which I discovered with working with the horsehair wig that they are. It's almost like a synthetic wig today. You know, a lot of people think that is really hot and heavy. The wig was actually very light. You know me and said that she was she did was she ventilated the wig, and she did it Strand by strand. She did not double strand, so I think that helped out a lot, but it was really a light weight wig. Surprisingly, Hmm. Well, that's good to know because because she does have it on for quite a sometime in the in the film. So let me ask you about Hollywood's track record when it comes to hair in general, I mean, The industry has a history of not working well with black hair. Or let's just say it here that is other than straight and sleek, and you've heard stories from celebrities like Gabrielle Union and Halle Berry about their experiences with hair stylist who weren't trained Retreat or work with their type of hair. So is that part of the reason you got into the business? Because because that service wasn't being offered. Tell us a little bit about your story. Yeah, I guess so. I guess you would say so. My experience. You know, I was working with violas since 2008. And yes, she wanted someone There who could Styler here and handle it. And that is always a challenge when we're on set, Um African Americans are familiar with both types of here. You know, we just don't do one. Texture of here. We can do it all and by actors now, speaking up and saying that they want someone who can handle the here they have to bring in African American hair style is because there's not very many. Caucasian. Here's that was that feel comfortable doing African American hair Is there obviously You know, it's it's wonderful. You know, they all say it's just great to be dominated. It's an honor just to be nominated. But is there something that you hope will come from this history making nomination? Well, let me just say, you know the recognition of my, um You know my art and talent by the academy. Is for me is really bigger than me. It Z like every stylist's dream that's being you know that sits behind the chair and want to work in motion picture of film. Um, it's for the young child who tell their parent that they want to be a hair salis and the responses that is not a career. You know, this nomination to me is validation. That hairstyle. It is an art form, and it is a craft and it is a skill, you know, and I just think it shows every black woman or man doing here. That we can achieve this nomination and more importantly, that are telling his skill is equal an exceptional, you know. This is just really mind blowing to me because here is my passion and to be nominated into Possibly win an award is just blows my mind What Congratulations. So great to talk with you. Jimmy Cole. Wilson is nominated for an Oscar in the hair and makeup category for her work in Marie's black bottom, which is streaming that on Netflix. Make it wasn't thank you so much for speaking with.

But she's trying to smile and smile doesn't go up. Instead it goes down. You see how like goes down. Oh, and by the way, speaking as a woman, I can tell you this. She's already had talks look at her forehead. That's just not a normal for head. It looks like ice skating rank, and even I don't care. She says she's only twenty three if you're twenty three twenty three girl first of all. And if she is that she's ruined her face with botox already at twenty three. It takes a long time to earn a frown smile. Like, you have to be at least almost thirty to get a frown smile, and she's got it. But honestly, the thing is that people people that are twenty three really twenty three still look they have normal lines on their face like, you're fit. Even my kids do at eleven you still have your face has expression. You shouldn't look give an ice skating. Terrible mother. You should be putting talks in their face already eleven. I'm do. I do. But I think goes goes a lot deeper than that and should provoke a very interesting conversation. So. Hey, couple items have follow up before we get into that. Last week's episode was kind of a departure. It. It in tone any and information it caught a little it got a little personal. And I just wanted to say in case anyone was concerned. My girlfriend's house seems to have made it through the Wolsey fire here in Los Angeles, which is a small well for for her. It's a very big piece of good news. Martin and lists and looking at just moved back and see why people would actually love this film for certain reasons why I know exactly why critics a what? Look at the names associated with. Oh, oh, yeah. Davis. Steve McQueen, Gillian Lynne, Gillian Flynn. And even some even some violet Davis is about some new people that ain't there Cynthia REBA who's a up and coming Broadway actress, British Broadway actress in here, but other reasons why people love it because the town is there, you see it on screen some things you don't see when when you watch this just a trailer wash the movie direction, it's amazing to Rex. And goes, it goes beyond creative camera movements their tricks that a done to make you focus on other important elements cameras like one, no, No, you know, you know. a cameras placed on top of a car while the people inside you'll see the people, but the compensation as you just kind of it's almost like you ride on the hook. "Services or company and connecting with an interested audience for some people building their personal brand is a complete mystery, which I get it understand that that point of view, you know, there's the whole what should I be doing? What should I care about is about followers or engagement will? That's why I wanted to have Brittany in the guess. Share Brittany is a marketer and the author of influencers building your brand in the age of social media. She was the first ever senior director of influence or strategy and talent partnerships for her smack Zine digital media and the co founder of carbon before reaching out to Brittany. I actually read her book, and I found it extremely helpful. So I reached out to her after reading the book and saying like, hey, this was actually one of the better reads on infl- actually, the only read on influence marketing that I've ever seen that really hit the marks. It wasn't just glossing over things without giving you like real rates in real examples. And I found myself this year on the receiving end of more requests for brand collaborations partnerships and influence or post than I ever had before. So the reason I wanted to learn more about this is because I wasn't really sure how to navigate it all I wasn't expecting it. And I use the influencers book templates to. Confidently negotiate counter offers or decline opportunities that were not right for my business without earning a bridge. So as usual when I discover something that I find useful. I want to share it with you guys. I think that anyone can benefit from britney's knowledge about influence marketing, especially if you have plans to build out and wanna ties your personal brand or to ever work with another brand for any reason. For example, having them sponsor and event a podcast blog, or if you are invited to speak on a panel. This will be the episode to consult before we jump into the show just wants to give a special thanks to widows movie for supporting side cost. I don't think I've ever shared this with you guys. But one of the ways I stay creative is going to see movies. There's just something about the art form that just leaves me feeling so creative with all these new storytelling ideas, in my mind. And one of my favorite favorite actresses is violet Davis when I see violon screen at immediately feel empowered. "Great villains. Each time you watch it Gieszi something different. And to me. That's how it works. Every time. It's a different movie for me, David. So the film opens on the shot of there's a lack of mirrors to widows in this film because there is there's obviously running so side on running show in widows, and there's a famous side of Brandon running through New York one night, and they pretty much open on the same shot. Don't they the birds? I shove of a personal Abed interesting. I fell right that that opening shot, you have a spender and he's got the sheet covering. Just just about you know, you one more inch down in you. He'd be little colder say he's giving this kind of golden expression, like he's just had some so of listless interaction with someone and all the, you know, he's bored. He's he's been sept- his spirit, and he's he's got this apartment any and again he and violet Davis seemed to be living in the same apartment. This very Spartan white all very little decor is all kind of function is an interesting openshaw. Is you know, you introduce this character. Really, well, and I almost feel that like, you don't really need any more of the film, like I think he kind of get everything in that one shot like he's it's of tells you about the character, and then just of gives variations on on that kind of spiritual. Loyd. I don't know. Maybe maybe you want to respond to this didn't say anything specific about sex addiction is a very broad film about addiction in general. And it's like it does make you antisocial, and it gives you these demons, and it makes you judge mental of the people as well. And it was hard to take anything more than that faith. I feel the film works in these very broad strokes. To go into cardiac arrest. Okay. Maybe that it's quite conservative films. Well, in the same way, like the it's very anti is a film about how all these things about V. Maybe this is something of other people could read this inference that him taking on this life that is focused on sex and pleasures of the flesh. I guess is the thing that's ruining him is the thing is making a miscarriage avoid the if he were able to embrace normalcy. Then he would be a happy person if he were and he would be like understand, you know, you'll be to feel things and emotions, and I think the end of the film where he gets this kind of rude awakening about what means to be giving up this connection to other people if those Pat way of saying he's gonna be alright kids..
