"Like, no, I don't think I'm gonna look down there, Mike. The game is where that ball doesn't move. So it's kind of kind of baffled you sometimes. How bad your game can go south, but it's just, it's fun watching a lot of these athletes play Mark Mueller, unbelievable, unbelievable golfer. Well, smeltz is the guy, right? Isn't it smoltz? Isn't he the one, too? Smoltz is the one who look out for, right? He's always good enough not to win. Small she is, but he brings his game in. And he's a competitor. And he, I think what was it last year, he was in a playoff with Vinny del Negro. And he tried to make a miraculous shot and he messed it up and del Negro won and it was funny because which is Greg Olsen's it was his catcher as well as his caddie. When he was with the braves and he come in, you should have seen the look on his face. He was so fast. It was to me it was comical because but that's just that's just John small. He's a confederate. He's going to try to find an edge and it didn't work for him, but anyways, it was great for many great guy. But that's just the thing, guys, up there. You never know who's going to win. Because the competition is so great. It is so much fun. It's a beautiful course and the fans are great and Sean Payton's hitting it off a deck and I don't just mean a driver without a T literally off a deck of a boat that he flipped his tee shot on on that fame par three. It's a blast. It's a total blast. Oh yeah, that part three can get you in trouble too. So you got to be careful to make sure your wife's not walking with you. Are you talking about spec down the right? Perspective. You're in a little bit of trouble. You got to have number 11. Yeah, you got to keep your hand, you just got to keep your vision on the catcher's Mitt, David. You know what I'm saying? You just got to look straight at home. Just straight home. But you got to look. You have to. And I remember years ago, I was golfing with Dan Quayle. Okay. So then a bunch of girls I mean and bikinis just good-looking girls. And they're like, damn, can we get a picture? He didn't know what to do. I'm like, Dan, go over there, man. He'll get your picture with these girls. It'd be great for press. And so he got the courage he did it. All right, and he went over there. I said, all right, girls show your boobs. And he ran like that. He got out there so quick and he's like, he just looked at me and he goes, you're not right. You are not right. Okay, and then that was the end of his political career. Oddly enough. At the same time. It's strange, David. That's strange. That's great. Yeah, I could ruin anybody's political career. David wells, you are one of a kind sir. Let's do this more often. Hit him straight in Tahoe next month and let's keep chatting. It's been too long. I would love it. Thanks, rich. I appreciate that. It has been too long, David wells. It might have been like Tampa at a spring training in the late 90s last time I saw you, so I greatly appreciate the time here..

"Were like the number one in my life. I would never, ever disrespect to throw a club at a caddy or do something like that. And the fact that he kind of threw me under the bus like that, pissed me right off. So one of the wussification of pussy of pussycat is the guy that I had, which pissed me off. But I have a great relationship with the people at whisper rock. You know, and I played there. I played there four times this year already. And everybody is really great to me and awesome and I'm a little bit more subdued on the golf course now than I used to be. So maybe, you know, Kaiser changing for me. Yoga. I met a buddy or something. I had a real real quick. But I did get a bad rap on my whisper rock stories that people tell. Kind of like how I get them. And by the way, it's at this love at how everybody wants to talk about me and tell their own versions of stories about my life without asking me first. And, you know, whatever. I was a jumbo Joe, big jumbo about two weeks ago, having dinner down to Florida. And he said, you know what the biggest question that I got when I got here to Florida? You know what the number one question that all my teammates asked me is what was it like being teammates with JR? And on my fear kidding, it was like, no, everybody wants to know what it was like being a teammate with Jay. I'm like, what the fuck does the obsession with me? I'll tell you why there's no guys in the league like that anymore who just kind of let it fly and I think the league drastically misses different types of personalities and I was actually going to ask you in segue. Did you have a question beforehand? Oh, it was just a quick one. Sorry, we'll get back to this, but I met your buddy last night, Craig, he's buddies with talking and he said I had to ask you, did you catch a rattlesnake and then drive home with it in your car holding it the whole time? Yep. Yeah, so I have a couple of I had like three or four rattlesnake snores from whisky. Because he carried it, while driving with one hand, he was holding with the other hand the whole time. So the first one I had I was playing a big money match and I was on the 13th hole and I'm down. I think I'm down like 2500 bucks. And I have a double press going to par 5. Ten, 11, 12, 12 par 5 going up the hill. It's an upper whisper rock. And I'm just like, I'm flailing, right? I'm just not in my zone. And I need to win this hole, and we're walking up the fairway. And I'm way behind because I'm I had to get something to eat or went to the bathroom. And there's a rattlesnake that was coming across the fairway. And I was planning to get a couple of guys and I picked the rouse makeup on the fairway. And I started running towards the guy I was playing and he turned around and saw me and he saw, I had to stake in my hand. And the look of death came over his face. And if you ever would have seen a 200 and 75 pound guy do like the 50 yard dash in 3.2 seconds, and you screaming, he's screaming like a bitch. Literally, I chased him up the fairway. He gets to his next shot and he's literally, he's shaken. He can't even move. And I win the next three or four holes and end up catching up because I chased him with a snake you so flustered he couldn't even play with him. Send them November. And then the one I was actually walking out to my car and the rattlesnake was in the parking lot. So again, I pick it up and it wraps around my arm and I have it have them right tucked in and I only live like two miles from the course and I said I wanted to scare my wife with it so I drove home so I'm holding the snake and I'm driving home and I go into my into my house with the snake and my wife's making the bed and I said hi, I brought someone home I brought a friend home for lunch. I hope you don't mind and I put the snake right next to her. And if you ever seen someone jump and clamp her nails and feed into the ceiling and she, I had to sleep and I had to sleep in the guest room for two nights, she was so mad at me. My last story is like you guys, you guys know which Barack when you come out of the grip men's grill. There's a little walkway to the parking lot. Well, as I came out, there was a big bull snake, like a massive bull snake. Now, they're not poisonous. They're just big. And I picked up the bull snake and I brought it into the men's grill. And Vinny del Negro was having breakfast by himself. He was sitting at the table. And I went behind him and I let the snake, I put it on his shoulder and the snake crawled up right here while he was eating breakfast. And he jumped. The whole table, the whole breakfast, flew over, and he ran into the bed's locker room, and again, with a screech that you would never forget that came out of a grown man's mouth. I thought he was going to have a total heart attack. But yeah, I like that. Well, that led into that led into a few lines. I was going to ask you, who are the current day players if you're following the NHL still that excite you on and off the ice maybe with their personality? With their personality, I don't know, I can't think of any either. I mean, I got to think about that one. I mean, are you still watching a good amount of hockey? I don't watch, I don't watch hockey very often. I bet on it all the time. So I more watch it on the ticker rather than watch it live. So I know who's scoring. I know when they're scoring, I know what's happening. I mean, I think the product is really good. I think it's that they're skating, the talent is unbelievable. I don't think it's as.

"Another and yet both end up meeting at the end. So where do you get, you know, you said earlier that you learn how to write by teaching by summing up points, but where did you get that specific style? That's just a matter of practice, you know, if you go out on the basketball court enough times, you start to develop your own little moves or things that help you. Hopefully be successful. But when I go play basketball in San Antonio, I'm 5 7. So I'm like pretty tall in San Antonio. I'm a power forward in sanitize leading the league in rebounds in San Antonio, right? But then when I left and I lived in Houston, that wasn't the case anymore, or when I was like, if I went to LA, everybody in LA is like 6 foot two. You have to play a whole different type of basketball out there. So you just learn these little layup package tricks or whatever. It's the same thing in writing. There's some stuff that I'm not good at. And there's some stuff that I am good at. And so I just try to stay in the neighborhood of stuff that I am good at there. And that just is, again, you know, ten years of practice or self trying things and you see, oh, this doesn't work, that does work. Okay, cool. Let me try this, let me try that, you know? So are you more Tony Parker, manujan obli or Tim Duncan? I don't imagine I'm any of those ones. I'm more like I'm more like a Vinny del Negro. Do you remember any diagram? Of course I do, bad. Wildly inefficient player barely hung on in the league, never was an all star. That's about where I am. That's how I feel. Ever humble. You're 5 tools all the way, man. And, you know, you write these essays, which everyone loves. I always go viral, but in the journalism world nowadays, people keep telling us, hey, no one wants to read long things. Everyone just wants to listen to stuff. So why do you keep doing books and essay when you also have so many other avenues out there in projects? It feels more natural to me. I feel like I do better in text based scenarios because you have a longer time to think about something. Like if I'm writing an essay or an article or a book chapter, I can take as much time as I want with it, and I can research every single piece of it. So when I put it out, it is fully informed and sharpened. If I'm doing a podcast, you're probably going to ask me a question here that I'm not prepared for. And I'm going to stumble a bit and I'm going to sound dumb. You know what I'm saying? I feel much more comfortable with writing stuff down because I get to spend whatever amount of time I want on it before I send it out into the world. Another thing I really like about writing is like, when you write a thing or when you read a thing, your brain like forms all of the pictures in your head and you get to decide exactly what it looks like. And I like the idea of me writing like let's say I write a little story. I wrote a little thing the other day where I was talking about playing basketball with one of my sons who's 14. He is the same height as I am now. He's gotten. He's better than I am at basketball now. So I was talking about that. And I get to tell that story and somebody will read it and they will build it all out in their own brain and it's going to look perfect to them. It's going to look exactly how they want it to look because they're the ones in charge of that picture. I'm just providing the text. I really like that part of it. Yeah, you say that right now, I'm already imagining me facing off against my brother when he was, what was it? Ten years old. He's already my high at ten years old. I'm 5 9, and he's backing up at me backing up at me and then he does one of those neck jerks back and just smash broke my nose. And I'm like, okay, I'm Don game over. I'm never gonna play basketball with you again. Exactly. Exactly. And I think that's part of the reason that people who do respond to any of the stuff that I write. That's why the response to it. And that's sort of the intention of it. Like with the book, for example, the new book, hip hop and other things, you have 252 pages or whatever to write about all the stuff you want to write about. There's no way you can cover every single thing. That's not the point of doing a book. The point of doing a book, at least the ones that I work on are I want to write about something that I like in a way that makes you think about something that you like. It doesn't even have to be that same thing. But like I tell the story about this thing happening to me. And in your head, you go and I remember when this version of that happened to me. And then you feel good remembering that story. That's what I'm trying to do in the books or in any other writing really. So you're now a three times New York Times bestselling author, probably going to be a four time with hip hop and other things. You're probably the second most bestselling Mexican American author right now. Do you know who's first? Sandra cisneros. Nope, not even close, man. Really? No way. But her books are all through like in every school in America. I have to imagine mango street has sold a billion copies. I wish and I would hope, but the number one right now, Diana gabaldon. Really? Do you know who she is? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, did the outlander fantasy series. I got turned into that cool star show like time traveling British nurse falls in love with a Scottish warrior, a chicano from Arizona wrote that stuff, man. I had no idea. That's cool. Over 25 million copies sold of all of her books, so that's awesome. Yeah, no, I were talking about huge worldwide translating to a bunch of languages. So what does it say when two of the top selling chicano authors in the United States don't write exclusively about the Mexican American experience? I probably says that you don't have to only write about that thing. You know what I'm saying? So I have this conversation a bunch of version of this conversation. Like if I'm in a you mentioned some Hollywood stuff. If I'm in a room and I'm pitching a thing, there's always a point because you're almost always pitching it to only white people. And there's always a point where you finish telling the story idea and then they start asking questions and they're like, okay, but where's the scene where they talk about being Mexican in America? That's got to be so hard. And I'm just sitting there and I have to tell them, that's not how it works when you're like, there's never been a time in my life when me and my family were sitting at the dinner table talking about what it's like to be Mexican in America because what that does is that that means you're centering whiteness here like the being American that that's another version of them saying, being white. And so if I'm like, that's not what we do. It doesn't work like that. You don't talk about the thing because you're always the thing. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. We'll be back after this break. Sheis, so why do you think there's not more Latinos in the world that you now work in with books? I mean, a recent survey shows we only make up 6% of the U.S. book publishing industry and only 3% of the industry's executives, even though we're about what, 20 some percent of the population now in the United States? I think we just didn't know about it for so long, most of us still don't know about it. We started the race late. We're trying to get in there. You know, the Internet has sort of democratized everything. It's making it a little bit easier. It's especially helpful when people who are us are in leadership positions. There's like a common language there already, but you know, we're just a little late to the game, but we're on the way, baby. We're catching up. You're one of the important ones, man. Just right there, again, being on that New York Times Best Seller list, but also I would say because you're advocating you're starting scholarship funds for Latinos again to journalism, you're prepping up like people who need that chance. Why is it important for you to change that? So much of the stuff that I do is like me just trying to get back the feeling of what it was like being a teacher. Because when you're walking to that classroom every single day, you have the chance to do a meaningful thing. Every single day. And you can watch it happen in real time. And you can feel it in your chest when it happens. And so like I missed that part because writing you don't really get that if you're just like writing and making your jokes or whatever. Writing is great for my ego, because people are telling me all of the time. Oh, you're so funny. You're so great this and that. But it's not as good for my heart as teaching was. Nobody cared that I was a teacher, but I felt better about myself. You know what I'm saying? So I think any of this stuff that I'm doing outside of writing that's like trying to help others is like selfishly. It's just me trying to get that feeling back again. I still think though, man, the most powerful Latino advocacy you do is when you'll tweet or say online or say somewhere, you'll say, quote, Mexicans are perfect. And it doesn't matter what it is. My favorite example is when you tweet it out a picture of a plate of enchiladas Tex mex style, which they're delicious, but the rest of the world is like, oh gosh, disgusting. This gravy and yellow cheese. And then that picture, there's also a bottle of big red, which is like this cult soda from taxes. And then the caption, Mexicans are perfect. So where did Mexicans are perfect come from? And why are we perfect? The very first time I did it, it was because it was like a food related thing. I just sat down and was looking at this plate of food. I think I had been on the road for a while a couple of weeks and I got back home. And I went to like Blanco cafe in San Antonio, the best enchiladas I've ever had in my life. But I got those enchiladas and the beans and the rice and the soda and the chips and the sultan. I just had it all in front of me and I was so happy to be there, eating this $4 plate of food again. And that's just what I thought I'd just felt like the Mexicans made it. They made the food so I tweeted the picture. And then it just became like this. This long running thing I've been doing it for several years now. My favorite thing about it, my absolute favorite thing about it is that Mexicans get so mad. They get so mad when I post a picture of Tex mex food. They are just livid. Livid. They hate it. And then it becomes this big argument and it just makes me laugh every single time. But it's fine. You know, like that's the thing we can all argue about amongst ourselves. We've been doing it for a billion years and we'll do it for a billion more. It's like when you go home and your cousins make fun of you. And you're like, they're only doing this because they're my cousins and we all love each other. Like this is sort of how those relationship is. It's all love. But then you'll say something like Mexicans are perfect. You say in opposition to say Trump or all these xenophobes going after Mexicans. Is this really profound statement that it's like chicano pride that we haven't felt in a while and you just sum it up in three words? It just sort of encompasses everything. You just say those three words. And that's it. It's beautiful, man. If people want to get the real you, that's where they should be following you on Twitter. You have over 426,000 followers. It's period you. Pictures of your twins and your wife, or you just flip off the camera, just just for the hell of it. But you'll just drop it like that. I always crack up. I don't think Jonathan franzen or DOM de lilo are doing that, you know? But you also have something called the FOH army. What's that? That's this goofy like a gorilla philanthropy thing that started up several years ago. Completely as a joke. So much of this stuff was just like, it starts as a joke, and then it becomes this whole thing. The way that that worked was when I was working at grantland and this was 2015, I signed like a contract to work there for a year. I signed the contract in July in October of that same year, three months later, they shut it down. They're like, hey, guess what everybody's fired. But I had a contract for a year so they had to pay me out for the year. So I had like 7 or 8 months of I don't have to do any work. And I thought it was gonna be great, but like two weeks into it, I was really bored and just wanted to do stuff. So I started this newsletter and it was me and Arthur la Torres who illustrates all the books over the course of a couple of weeks for like 30,000 subscribers to it. It was his whole big thing, but we're doing it for free. Just because we felt like doing it. But because there were so many people who are subscribing to it, they kept asking if they could donate money. And so one day after, we got tired of saying we don't need the money. We put a donation button in there. And then people donated money to it, and it was like, well, what the fuck do we do now? I don't want this. Do you want this? Or could we take the money we donated it to the genesis women's shelter, which is in Dallas, Texas, and it's a place where Arthur his mother and his brothers lived for a while, like they gave him as far as art supplies. And it's just like a meaningful place to him. So we sent them the money. And then we told everybody what we did. Ha ha ha, your dummies, you gave us this. We gave it here. Like as a joke, like a couple months later, we did it again. And then people were asking immediately like, oh, where are you donating it this time? And it just became like a thing we were associated with. So we're like, I guess we're going to donate it again. And then we just kept on doing it. And it started out small in the first time we did it. It was like 2700 bucks or something like that. But by this point, by now today, it's been like, you know, $600,000 that we've donated to various places. It's crazy, dude. No, and that's where I think is the best you because you're brilliant, everyone should read you, listen to you, but you're giving out money like a reverse Scrooge mcduck man. 600,000, you know, I remember there was a hurricane, your fans raised over a 100,000 just a couple of days for hurricane victims. And then people just hit you up randomly. Hey, man, I need 50 bucks. I need $500 to pay my cell phone bill or this, whatever. And not only do you make it happen, you post a receipts like proof. You're not just saying it to say it. You said earlier like, part of that comes from you being a formerly being a teacher and you want to feel that making that difference in someone's day for that. But really, where does that come from? Because I don't see many other writers or reporters who do it at your level so.

"In a lucid energy people are trying to recapture that is just something special is as it's listened moments in the garden on moments in the garden. You can't recreate that. You gotta let the moment happened. What's your favorite moment. Ever in the garden. I think that one like that that and not even playing just like walking out that tunnel and waving is just like seeing the video and they wouldn't show me video prior to that he was like man. We just going to give you a nice introduction. Will come out and i come on. You can't do this ships before the game. I got goosebumps. Yeah i shoot the ball over the basket right up so high but it was a it was a great moment man and you know that was that was one Thank i know we we play chicago. I think that was saint patrick's saint patrick's day or something like that sent todd game up in one game with two game winner so that was a moment. the sixty two point game Was pirated top What so i told you before. We started that I still a bulls fan. I still contend that if you had joined the bulls in two thousand fourteen that team would compete for title so walk me through that. I have a question. I and it's going to be creepy and i know the answer to it but i gotta ask you anyway do you. Yeah you probably have no idea who i am. You probably never never on your radar. But i did go on a hot dog strike for you to sign with the bulls that summer. I only ate hot dogs for dinner for like two weeks straight. I tweeted you every day being. Please calm bobby was hotdogs. I wasn't going to be going to be plotted guy. I just wasn't gonna be playing. It was never going to work every. And how'd you got me on the grill. Like mellow response me. He actually answered the question. I would not have been good. It wouldn't be a good fit for you being chicago if you don't like hotdogs. I know like chuck just when he message me. I guess sort of hot dog is backed off of that ever offer another man. I got it i got. It might have been tampering to now. That i'm thinking about it but let's let's talk about that because i do think you were. The perfect fit for that team Was it the fact that the front office and the coach will the coach. The front office was spying on him. Which actually i think was true. Did you catch win volvo c so you get it from the other side no i i do. How dysfunctional it was. Because you've you'll bulls fan. Yeah right so. That's what i'm saying. So that's helpful to know when i'll say my hands. Okay all right because you're giving it to me from from a difference. I thought that gar were spying on him. Which i think was actually true. I don't know what was going on. Okay i just know. I'm very ago for energy. I go fives. And when i get this icago any like the vibe was there you know joe kim was there the rose was there like you know we we talking about it and i'm sitting there and just like i want to make this happen like feel like if there's gonna be a time for me to make a move like this is the right move for me to make and then i leave and i go to a couple of other cities it wasn't it wasn't the same reaction invive energy but i'm started getting these texts and calls like man. This shit is crazy over here. You know we all know who want to be here. And i'm like i. I'm not about to leave one of them's type of situations that go another day. The same situation right. i rather just. I'd rather just come back home. Stay stay well matt so it is kinda true that the the front office and there. I've always thought that they're at least in that regime. They've changed now but that regime had trouble landing big free agents because that type of word gets out there around the league where it's like. Hey it's a little dysfunctional here. Yeah i think it was. I don't know bow. no i i've never heard of. Chicago was dysfunctional. Ben outsider was John paxson shocked. Vinny del negro. I've never. I've never. I've never heard of but you would see see things. You would read things you know you see reports on different players and you just like what is going on over there. Would it have been a good fit though. I think he would have because it was the offensive piece. A day was a great great team. Rhino they would they would score and they needed. They needed somebody else. Somebody else to score the basketball It was. I thought it was too much on d. Rose as a point guard to try to score. Get everybody involved. Lead a team you know. Mvp but that. That's that's still a lot when you don't you. Don't have that that robin which batman or whatever you know you'll have your. Yeah the superhero. Which yeah you know. You just have a great team. A well put together team. Great coach But when you got to do it when you do it yourself even though you can do it. Yourself is is tough yeah. I'm glad you brought up the batman. Robin because i'm about to ask a question that i'm going to hate saying but i have to ask so batman robin eighty lebron which is which who's batman. Who's rob. yeah. I'm i'm a justice league guide to okay so not original robin and i know the new robert. I watch teen titans and all that. So they both batman. But i'm gonna. I'm gonna i'm gonna i'm gonna say this. I think they're both batman. I think at times. I think a d can be robin wright. Lebron tried to be robin. But ain't who he is. He is batman. Bruce wayne eighty can be robin. He can switch it up. And that's how that's how i like to. I like to say that. Now they both batman but eighty can be robbing a little bit. More than lebron can be a robert. Yeah how frustrating was it when you were out of the league knowing that you were still better than a lot of guys in the league's i'd you know i'd see the videos. I am convinced that what's the gym called. That you guys all work out at here in the guy yeah. I'm convinced the rims are a slightly bigger because no one ever misses in that. Jim this is shoot as jim. Yeah right exactly. It's not bigger. But it's an perfect jim for the instagram. But how frustrating was that. Because you're sitting there like. "Athletes. That's first time you had athlete. A singular athlete empowered. It felt like they took control. They took control of the message. And lebron did that. Now also you get guys my age. You probably don't like athletes when they control the message but lebron did that owned the show. They help produce the show and he gave us the decision. So what else is so bad about that that. That's what i'd be curious about. But no i i look. I'm defensive with lebron because what he's done. I don't think you'll ever get enough credit because when you lose in the nba finals. Well that makes you bum. And he took some of the at least one of the worst teams that will ever play an nba championship and could easily in my opinion. Been the mvp in a losing effort. I really believe that a couple of years ago against golden state. I think he could have been the. Mvp we'll we'll switch gear switch sports He's john smoltz the emmy award winning outstanding sports event analyst. And let me before we get to all of that. I'm watching the golf tournament this weekend. American century and my boy. John smoltz's ledin and i thought. Well that's great. John's gonna win and then he's gonna go he's gonna be hosting the all star game and then you lose to vinny del negro. How nervous were you pitched in a world series How nervous were you compared to how you were on sunday in the last couple of holes there so it wasn't nerves that got me. I felt great in a baseball game. Of course golf is different story. So you know in some of the tournaments that i played in the nerves worse in golf unfortunately in this tournament i i had lost my swing. So there's it's a worst scenario the nerves like it isn't the nerves that lost my swing. I just lost the fundamentals of my swing. And when you do that and golf you're like hanging out. And so i felt like there was nowhere to go lick in baseball. By lost my fastball. I have my slider at my split or vice versa in golf. If you lose your swing you're basically you're you're You're trying to figure out how you're going to get the ball in the hole. So i i definitely was battling last round. I wished i would have had a better a better swing though but i gotta give vinnie all the credit because he played great that last night that last day in an you know the story about im- losing his dad and not telling anybody in and winning the tournament was something pretty incredible. You needed leo mazzone. I think to help you out there. Come come out to the mound and and but explain how you losers swing well golf like i'm not connected mechanically like i wasn't based on. Yeah you get a reminder in baseball come out. Say hey do this in greg olson. My caddie was great and trying to get me through the round..

"TJ Wilson from the Texas Rangers and did nothing with them. So I mean, I don't know what it's going to take sure you can tell him or judges Rangers fan by heart. But when the world today is going to do the Be a competitor in the division, let alone the league. Yeah. Yeah, That's my thoughts. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. Beato said that but didn't have a loud bell in the back of what? What was that? What happens? Door was open. Oh, no, no, I'm telling you, something was ajar. I understand. I think like, dude, if that Otani kid was on and Astros or a Dodgers or Yeah, like, if you be it'd be crazy er news about him. Why is I mean, so what? Anybody that could compete? Why are the Angels not? Why can't they be better? I mean, they have that history of paying a lot of money to get those stars there And then when the stars arrive there trash, But as soon as they leave, then they have a resurgence in their career. It's a wild thing. Some people say it's an angels hex, or, uh, You know some voodoo going on down there, But that's it's a real thing. They like to pay a lot of money for stars who, while they're underperform, and then when they leave, they do better. But I mean, the Otani kid is obviously doing his thing. Will we see more of these guys? I'm sure there have been guys who could could pitch and hit, uh, education it could for the Longhorns 20 years ago. You know the organization's major league baseball like No, No, No. You got to choose one of those. We're not going to run our picture out there in the batting line up every you know every day or the opposite. Purists will go. They freak out when they see now that they see this. Will that will there be more? I think more guys like that. Maybe you could Jason, but not to this degree. I mean, that dude is something like special on top of special. But, yeah, you know, Brooks was probably the best pitcher hitter that maybe Texas has ever had. Dennis Cook at it to Dennis Cook with great picture hitter too, right? Cookie was. Did I say? He said he doesn't take batting practice? Yeah. Otani, listen that he ripped that off when I say that to you. Yeah. Long old Coach Dick here Long been my opinion that when it comes to softball, practicing is cheating, okay? Kind of goes for golf as well. But I've been practicing a little bit lately. Practicing it. She got some whiffle balls in the backyard. Also, if you play with a zero B A C that's also cheating. Okay? Yeah, that's you Got you got you got to have some jet fuel and let's get some beers in you, man. Get some jet fuel. All right here. Let's move the golf and my guys been on hold on. Zack for new Broncos is on Calle BJ. What's exactly Hey, not much. I I think I would agree to. I also don't care about the baseball thing. I think I tuned out that entire segment hold for. Thanks Exactly. I'll put you right back on hold. I'll have you now. As as I was calling. When you were talking about the UFC thing, not really having any stars. I was wondering what you guys think I kind of feel like golf is sort of getting that way because we had Tiger Woods. It was the superstar forever, and I feel like we haven't really had, like one person that's like the guy. In a while. I mean, we kind of thought speech was going to do it A few years ago, I was like maybe kept to But like looking at the last three years, there hasn't been a single repeat person win a major. Yeah, I think Ed's going to tell you that that is not true that there's a bunch of rising stars in the game. But it's a good point. Zach, you know, because Jon Rahm is on the cusp. He could. He could win this week in sandwich at Royal ST George's, because he almost won the Scottish Open yesterday. He's right there a budding superstar to be, I think, Bitos Man, Rice and the shambo. Is a superstar, so I think there are superstars they've been trying read like with Rory or with Jordan, right? They just they find the hiccups where they might go off course there for a couple of years, But definitely since Tiger they've been yearning for one. I don't know what the problem is just having that great like upper echelon of of players and having it be more competitive. Just show you have to have someone ahead. I think holders above no, I think it's good for the game in term for people, you know, It's it's super golf fans like And and sort of casual golf fans like us. Yeah, it is good, but when that when Tiger was doing it like he's on Good Morning America, all right. He's on the bananas in Fresco morning show for people who don't care about God. He's on their radar, and there are no golfers right now who are like There's no golfers that do what Tiger did, which is a track non golfers to see him play on Sunday on TV because he's such a He was such a huge personality. Huge person. Yeah, Bryson do Shambo. That guy got any friends? I am so far out on him. I don't know what happened. What'd you do to you now? I don't know. Like I was. I was all about it when he was, you know, just pounding protein shakes and driving the ball a million miles. Then I watched him on the match. What? Everything. And now? Hey, dude. Now he's just saying he's got a new caddy. And he and his old of a guy or fine. I'm like you're never going to talk to that guy again. Yeah, he said today that yoga is business were bad. It's needs have been bad. Well that well, why didn't you say that last weekend or the rocket in Detroit? That Yeah. He's got bad knees. He wants to quit for a while. You didn't say that you had to an assistant pro from Dallas National in Dallas. And you got your friend, your swing coach. And, yeah, Yeah. You guys know who my favorite golfer is? Vinny Del Negro. Former Spur? Yes, sir. Golf champion beat John Smaltz in a playoff. Yesterday. I tell you what, for a guy who finished his baseball career is a closer had an awful time closing out that golf tournament yesterday. Oh, you're killing me there today. That was it. Yeah. Sorry. Exactly. Yeah, well, it was this like a Peter Pan golf. What is that stable, You know, American century American century Century championship. Edwin Tahoe and I need you to get me on their real You can. I can get you on there because I think any Tom Dick or Harry can walk up there and play. John Smaltz, uh, was leading the whole day and then collapsed. The last two holds many Del Negro made a birdie on 18. They go to the first playoff all where John Smaltz. It's a tree and it's a tree again and hits it in the water. It's over. And my guy Vinny Del Negro again former spur Now he did play for, like half the teams in the league. I don't know if the Spurs claim him. Uh, he's He's the first ever basketball player to win the celebrity tournament. Oh, is this what, like Charles Barkley was in that we talked about Barkley Bet on himself. How's your guy? Do the one that you have a tattoo on your back? Tony Tony Romo played well finished in third. I needed to make a couple putts didn't do it. Annika Sorenstam fourth I think that's the thing. She's a She's a Hall of Famer. No, she's you're saying she shouldn't be allowed in? No, she should She should woman and she she should not have played because he's a pro. But it was fun because she's a fine golfer enjoy watching her play Barkley but about $100,000 on himself at 5 to 1 odds that he'd finish in the top 70..

"The city. I'm Lisa Dent on 7 20 w g N for Anna Duplantis. I'll be in tomorrow from 1 to 4 as well, Um, we've got to talk about the Duncan Keith thing. Kevin Powell in our sports department is with me. But, Kevin, I know you are an avid golfer. Um So did you watch the American century championship yesterday? I watched a little bit of it. Yes. Where you locked into it? Yes. I don't even know why, but because I was seeing some familiar faces. You know, a lot of the Bears were playing. I mean, Brian Urlacher, Robbie Gold. Matt Nagy, Kyle Fuller, Jim McMahon, Doug Flutie. I didn't see any of them. All I saw was Vinny del Negro. That was because he was the leader. I didn't know if Vinny Del Negro was such a great golfer. I know John Smaltz has been around Tony Romo. Those are guys names you see, and kind of here around the golf circuit as well. Steph Curry was out there. Mike McDonnell, longtime hockey player, Um Yeah, it's always It's a star studded event. For sure. I mean, there are a lot of, uh, celebrity outings. This one actually draws a huge celebrity crowd. Justin Timberlake was out there. Roger Clemens, Jerry Rice. So all the big sports names were together points in golf and out of all the Chicago names. I mean, Vinny Del Negro. Want it but out of the Bears, I guess Robbie Gold shot the best round. So what did you shoot this weekend? I'm sure you got in around. I did get it around Saturday. Would you finished just in time, with little bit of rain falling out in the suburbs, But we did get a full 18. It was supposed to play yesterday morning, but That was a washout. So at least got one round in. So I was happy with that. Okay, Let's talk about Dunkin Keith. You know, I get very attached to people, especially if it's somebody that plays for the Hawks or the bowls or the or the Bears. And and then I. I feel really sad when when they're traded off or they're gone, or they choose to leave. Yeah. So the reports are that Duncan Keith is headed to the Edmondson Oilers for defenseman Caleb Jones and a third round pick, also a major part of the deal. It is being reported that the Walkin Consume, can will take on all of Duncan Keith salary, so that does give them some much needed salary cap flexibility heading into this off season. It's not an official deal yet. We haven't got anything from the Hawks, but It seems like it's just about a done deal. Duncan Keith to the Edmonton Oilers, But yet to your point, I mean, you think about that core of Tase Kane, who still remain with Corey Crawford. No longer with the team. Brent Seabrook stepping away from hockey now, Duncan Keith Marion Hossa, so really, just have that core of the three Stanley Cups. Just the to remain in cane and tapes, But, yeah, I don't think we can overstate how great of a player Duncan Keith was He still, I think plays at a good level high level. Certainly not dead his elite level when he was winning Norris Trophies. Um when you know you look back at some of those years during those that Stanley Cup run what Duncan keep meant to that team, but just a complete hockey player. He's a complete shutdown Defenseman. Everything you would want in a defenseman, one of the best Blackhawks players ever. But you know, it's great. He's one of those guys. Much like Greg Olsen was for the Bears or Robbie Gold, who have foundations based in Chicago that raise a lot of money. And for him, you know, I always loved is is Keith relief at Joe's Bar, and I think it's raised like Recorders of a million dollars for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicago land and I'm sure he'll take that to the next town that he's in. But I think that builds a fan base that goes beyond sports where people are very thankful for what some of these athletes do in our community to Benefit our community and all of us who live in it for sure. And you know when you have that platform here and how crazy sports obsessed we are in Chicago, and, you know, they think once they understand you see, like the work when Anthony Rizzo does and things like that A lot of these guys do and I'll contribute. So when you do have that platform and you do have an audience and a fan base that's going to be on board with pretty much anything you're doing. As well take advantage of it. So yeah, for sure, Duncan Keith, But, you know, we knew at some point this this incredible run the Blackhawks, head from the core would slowly come to an end Duncan Keith's 37 years old, It's the direction that I think a lot of us are have kind of seen with the Blackhawks. And when Stan Bowman is doing with the roster turnover, they were going to have to go this route eventually, but Getting younger was key. Obviously so, so moving on from Duncan Keith. Um not not a major surprise, considering the direction of the team, But yeah, I mean, Just an absolute legend here in Chicago Sports. And with the Blackhawks. Yes. So, thanks to Duncan for all He's done home Run Derby tomorrow night. I know tonight tonight. Yeah. Who wins? Who do you think wins? Shohei Otani is the betting favorite? He's the leader in baseball. He's the two way sensation with the Angels. He pitches. And he hits a lot of home run, so he's actually gonna start on the mound for the American League, and he's going to D. H and he's going to lead off. So, um, that'll be fun to see him in the All Star Game tomorrow night, but the home run Derby. It's an eight player brackets they do now and they're timed rounds and it's three rounds. So, um Thani's The betting favorite. I'm going to go with Juan Soto of the Washington Nationals. That's my pick for you. Okay, I'll hold that to you tomorrow. Okay? Um, And so I don't know if this is actually considered a sport, but I wanted to talk to somebody about it. So you're my guy, Kevin Powell. Um, professional tag. Have you ever watched that on T V? I have not watched it on TV. No, it is the craziest thing. Anyone listening. Watch this because Somebody turned me onto it, and it is literally it's like it's like one room with lots of obstacles, and the whole point of the sport is to tag the other guy, and it is the most intense, crazy thing you have ever seen. And these athletes are so agile. It's just it's inexplicable. You need to check it out. It's a step up from your basic playground tag. When we were growing up. It is called professional tag for a reason. You can't even believe you care to believe in it. There's actually skill and there's a method to winning. And yes, of course, it was one of my nephews that said, You have to watch this and I'm like, is that even a thing and it is and it's Pretty much something everybody needs to. You know what I think? I've seen highlights of this where it's almost like, not an obstacle course. But as you said, it's kind of just there's things that they have to jump over and run down and run around. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it almost looks like a skateboard park or something, You know, But the competition is on. We should play a professional, uh, tag game here at the radio station, and I'll just run around this afternoon. We'll select one person to begin my money's I'm Mary van develop. She was. She's always walking around the station anyway. So can cream. You guys lay of the land here, Okay..

But i if you're going to shed money to get rid of kemba. Maybe the camera guy. But if you're gonna shed money to get rid of campbell and you had inherit a horford trade. That's when you bring a three man team into this because really it's just like hey. I looked a first round. Pick for al horford. Ns like terrible thing because we're not in two thousand nine anymore. "In show history. We were in. Milwaukee brewers game and took part in the sausage races. They're mclovin ended up winning. Todd finished the f. L. in fact. Even the broadcasters for the brewers said this is embarrassing. But you did finish. I was past that. But i had to be the worst last place. Finish in the history of the subsidaries. I can't imagine anyone did that any slow. It was a lot of fun and we got some mileage out of that and they didn't ask us to come back so todd throughout the first pitch and and i said you have to go out there with no sleeves on show the guns and you had to go pro on a medium white under armour shirt that i should know business wearing that size just showing up way too much. Waste yummy your man candy. I mean that's what we we're you know we're put and if my arch sneakers what the ladies wanted to say they want. They're used to be a baseball player. Ted kluszewski played for the cincinnati reds. He had cut off sleeves. He had big guns and played for the cincinnati reds. Yeah they they allowed him to wear cut off season the game. Yeah he just had like a look like a vast vast gun show. Yeah it was the gun. Show absolutely should do that now. Guys love it. We had rex chapman on last hour. And i said hey. We got jim. Jackson coming on. And find larry goes yeah. I think jim put fifty me so. Jim was on the call for game. Seven between the hawks seventy sixers on sunday night and jim joins us now. Do you remember putting fifty up on rex. Chapman jim Not quite fifty. Maybe forty four. So so you remember exactly forty four. You know what. I don't i don't know if he was gretz might have been on that it was a. That's when they were the washington bullets. Okay we were and we played them actually was as ironic that. It's a night before into my ankle up when we went to jersey. But i think rex's on that washington team when that was down a little bit this a little bit. Was he guarding you. Evidently not now. Rick said he looked forward to facing vinny del negro. Because he knew he'd probably have a little easier night. Who did you. Who did you look forward to where you just went. Oh i got a circle on account I'll be honest with you man. It was during that time. I had the ball so much. It really didn't matter. Because i was always gonna have a ball now. I had. It was tough to guard at the time. The play against one of mitch richmond. Reggie miller michael was out of the league right when i got in because he retired Clyde drexler was it never was an easy night. I would say in the league at that time. Because dan even if you remember centers two guards and probably power forward your meat of your team so it was never a garden. Rex was hard because rex ran a lot of screens at chase them around the whole night. You know that was extremely difficult. How would your game be now. If you were playing is a great question. You know it'd be totally different alonzo mourning right good friend of mine. He said jimmy. Nope i played era. I would dominate. I would do. I said no. You wouldn't he's what you mean. I said because not that you could be alec..

"To a person document 1999. In 2000 as the jumping off point for just, uh, going down the toilet with our lives, which was when we were all three introduced to OxyContin. And it was a monster that we just you know, we were were one of those were three of those people that Really get along well with painkillers makes us feel extraordinarily good. And it just It started a years for all three of us of addiction and real problems. So I'm just thrilled that these guys were able to come on and tell their stories and that they that they lived through to see the other side. But the fact that he's out there I mean, you're really need to store. Oh, you do and then I can't I There comes a point where you're so dependent on that. Physiologically. I mean, you start feeling it, you start feeling sick, and the only thing you can think about is getting that pill and putting it in your mouth and getting into your systems and I would just chew them up just to get him into my bloodstream. They taste like crap, You know, but just to get him in my bloodstream quicker and nothing is more important to think about that he was out. Minutes to go before starting lineups, and he's standing on the corner up there at the garden, waiting for his Oxy dealer. It's madness. It's insane thinking, but that's where we where we were at the time. I got Jim Jackson on next hour you He's the best Jimmy Jackson just to say, But if I forget wasn't unbelievable basketball player He gave me fits, Uh, Might be a better analyst. He's an unbelievable basketball analysts. And he puts you on lockdown occasionally, Daddy, I think he gave me 51. I was coming back from a from a thumb injury and that and they went at me. He was in Dallas, and, uh, I I think you have to ask him about it. But I think he gave me 50 once. Michael never gave me 50. Jimmy, give me 50. Yeah. Do you think guys circle that that game on their calendar when they knew that they were they were going to face you. I hope so. Because I circled down. Yeah, but who did? Who did? You know you were going to have a great game? You just couldn't wait. You never You. Never. Yeah, you can now. Okay. Vinny del Negro. You You know you knew you were going to light up Vinny Del Negro. No, man. I can't. I can't say that that he was great. Just did. No, I didn't. Okay, I did. Yeah. Uh huh. And he's my guy. Yeah, well, not anymore anymore. Hey, it's great to talk to you. As always, Um so no CO I know Chris Paul tonight, but you get to watch Devin Booker. Oh, man, How much fun are these sons and I'm I'm a homer. Of course. Biased. Um But look at what? Look at what's left. The sons are the most complete team left. I I feel like they defend. They defend like they defend better than any of the teams left. They share the ball like a college scene. I can't say enough about money. Williams and I've been around this squad some. Then you know what a college atmosphere feels like. And when it's really good, it's really good. These players love Monty Williams. Like they love their their favorite college coach. To a person he's come in, and he's changed the culture James Jones and Robert Sarver made a great higher and the cultures completely changed. Devin Booker is obviously a star. DeAndre Ayton come leaps and bounds. So look out for the sons if they get Chris back. And are healthy. I don't know anybody can beat them. I would ask you this, but I know the answer because you're not going to know the answer. Where can people find your podcast charges? I'm going to say anywhere. You can find your five s apple Spotify? Yeah, Two of all of that stuff. Uh, I heart radio charges. Look at you. Okay, Look, I'm getting the hang of you. Are you Are we all growed up? Yeah. You mature in there, and it looks like you made your bed too. Well, I did. I got in trouble for not doing that last time. Look, then when you go hardship out of college you got it takes some time. You know, I love it back then. Rex went hardship. Was it really Were you hardship back home? I wasn't like what? How much did your dad make at the time? Oh, man, He didn't make very much right. He wasn't making very well. Yeah, uh, but back then you could go hardship. That's what it was called going hardship. Um and I remember. Well, almost nobody did it at the time that I was doing it. It kind of slow down and I didn't intend on leaving Anyway. We were going on probation. You know that? Because not because of you, right? Yeah, that's a long time ago. Had Mashburn on Jamal Mashburn on my other pot I do with Josh Hopkins. The Rex Chapman show and had Mashburn on a few weeks ago or a month or so ago and he was going through, he said, You know, That year. You know, the first year I came in. We had a great year, but we couldn't make the tournament. We were on probation. I said Sorry. I didn't that team go 13 and 13 that year that year, they're on probation. With Pitino. They may they may have they may have. I don't know. I lose track around. I I did a story on Kentucky basketball that year. Uh, But was that the Chris Mills FedEx, you know? Well, crypt, my, if I would have stayed in school and gone on to be a junior, our team would have been Uh, myself. Chris Mills, Eric Manual, Leron Ellis and Sean Kent. Oh, It's a squad. That's a squad. That's that's that's an NSA investigation is what it is. Wow. It never materialized. Yeah, Shawn Kemp, wasn't it that Eddie Sutton son took his s A T test for allegedly. You're you're You're confusing stories. Okay? Yeah. Yeah, but, Yeah, that was all kind of going on. You know, it's easy to get confused when it comes to Kentucky basketball direct because we're so Denver. Yes, Absolutely. That's what I went Many titles. That's what you're talking. You should be wearing your uniform tonight. Your your your Phoenix. But you've got a lot of uniforms. Yeah, maybe I'll just wear my uniform. That would be great. Like, just go with your socks and your shoes. Just walk in. Yeah. Shot socks and shooting taped. Yeah, and nobody's going to think. Wow. That's really Rex Chapman will be like that. Dude is dressing up like Rex Chapman. I I did that one year for Halloween. Here. You dressed up as you? Yeah. Wait. Where were you sober at the time. Mm hmm. Me, Uh, 50 ft. It's a jump ball. You know who knows? Have fun tonight behave. Okay, thanks. Go sons. That's Rex Chapman and his podcast is charges. Let's It's great revealing. He sent me a couple of episodes that I got to the kind of screen for him. But He's doing great. Take a break back.

"In a town that suited his personality. Had he played on a bigger stage. Had he played in New York, and he played in L. A. We would remember Tim Duncan differently. I truly believe that if he's winning titles, there would be a statue at Staples. If he was winning a title titles in New York. There'll be a statue. He's in San Antonio. Tim couldn't care less about how he's honored or have a statue there. Yeah point. It's also so so weird how he ended up in San Antonio. The 95 96 Spurs with David Robinson and Popovich before Duncan got there were 59 23 their first in the Midwestern division. They're great. Back injury to Tim Duncan. They finished sixth in the next season. There 20 and 62 they get deep in the playoffs. Lottery. They get Tim Duncan, first year a Tim Duncan the right back on top 2056 games. Well, I think that it might have been encouraged for David Robinson to not play those final games of the regular season when he came back with his back injury, and then they win the lottery. That's when Rick Pitino thought, Hey, I'm coaching the Celtics, and we're getting Tim Duncan and I am set for the next decade or so. And it didn't happen. Obviously, yes, McLovin. Wonder, though, with his style play, I mean, it was boring. Let's face it is his greatest moments for 12 ft Bank shots. He just was not a highlight player. You're right. So with how that but if he was in l A with the L A nous have overwhelmed that and he'd be Ah, bigger name. I'm not sure what you sow. So low keyed, but he couldn't have been anybody but himself. I don't think where he went. I don't think all San Antonio made him that. That's hooey. If you're around him, he is chill. Is Melo. He steps on the floor. Avery Johnson and Vinny Del Negro would tell me. Don't let him fool you like he. He has a temper. He's competitive. And he's got five titles. Uh, he was an all star. What 15 times. I'm guessing Offensively, but 1st 2nd 3rd team all defense. How many times 1st 2nd team. 13 regular MBA, You know, regular season All Star It's just we don't he wasn't exciting. And I had a conversation with his former teammate a couple of weeks ago. Matt Bonner. And he said, Look, Tim's won the five greatest players of all time. Now, you know he's obviously territorial here and you start to look at it. And and you could make a case. Tim Duncan is one of the top five players of all time. It's just there's no moment where you go. Wow. Did you see what Duncan did? It's one of those where you look in the box score afterwards and you go. Get 25 15, you know, five blocks Forces. No. We played with great players. Nobody knew Tony Parker was a great player. Nobody knew man who was a great player. We knew David Robinson Woz. We didn't know how good Gregg Popovich was, is a coach. Just kind of came together, but it helps when your star player falls in line with what the coach wants everybody to do. And he would yell it, Tim. Yes, McLovin. I have you know the all time ESPN list. It was a big deal two years ago. Uh, Tim is eight on their right ahead. A Larry Bird it right. Uh, I'm sorry, Labored seven and Kobe's nine, So he's sandwiched in eight, which is not far off the top five, but he's got five titles. He has three MVPs. In the finals. He's got two MVPs during the regular season. 15 time All Star. 10 time first team. Eight times first team all defense. Seven times second team all defense, so 15 years he was first or second all defense. He was rookie of the year. I mean, that's a decorated resume there. But who could you possibly knock out the top five? These really Russell Chamberlain, Magic Bird? Jordan. Kind of. Well, you have Russell and Chamberlain, and that's a different era. Because You know, I get into this argument, and I hate doing it. Um Bill Russell's the most decorated Does that make him the You know, one of the top five players, uh, you know, will want a title. Got a ton of scoring. I mean, he's got You know, you almost have to take. You almost have to start this in the seventies or maybe the eighties. Just to be fair to those players because Oscar Oscar's in there as well. It was just a different game. But I think that's where you talk about generational. Is Tim Duncan there with Michael Jordan. And the answer is yes, he is. Mean his resume is every bit he won five titles, You know, three times the M V p In the finals. Where do you find fault? Just because he didn't give you a highlight. That's really it. If Tim Duncan had a couple of Vince Carter highlights Tracy McGrady highlights Took down a backboard one time. Garnett. Garnett was in your face. He was there like you knew Garnett was on the floor. Tim what you could tune in and go Who's the best player on the floor? And it might take a little while before you realize that it was Tim Duncan. Ginobili was far more exciting. Parker was far more exciting. The admiral was.

"You end up. Getting to the bulls won that all look like a young team at the time. Now i was a fluke. You know there's nothing i pursued. I was working in the summers in chicago. For a guy named tim grover. He had a business called attack. Athletics work with nba players. Mostly in the summertime. And i was happened to be in chicago when the bulls video coordinator was a friend of mine. He called me and said hey look. They just hired a new coach and he's interviewing play development directors. You know would you be interested and assure you know and it's nothing that i ever fired to do but also i just got lucky and got hired in So that was it but it was nothing that i ever really aspired to be all wanted to do. Was really in. California was I being a junior college coach in california. It'd be great because it's very competitive out here with the ju- coz i played yuko. I love the junior college thing out in california. That's all. I kinda really wanted to do that. I just kind of ended up in this kind of a fluke tribal kind of thinking about that story right in just not really chasing it but obviously the passions all around basketball. It just sort of happened that way. I was also funny. What you brought up tim grover. His company called athletics. Not was the train for the best player in the world. Or anything of all time or anything like that just made pasta. Maybe one of the greatest trainer. Nope anybody you know if your listeners know who he is but he's just a terrific first of all he's he's very very smart. If you've read his books on you followed him you know what. What a bright guy. He is but he was kind of on the cutting edge of strength and conditioning for players. Michael went to him after getting beat up by the pistons and he. He searched out any found tim because he needed to get stronger. And it kind of went from there. You know michael to kobe and dwayne wade and all of the guys he's ad so he's great to my in my opinion of what he does. He's the best in the world. Say it works a little bit and you know it's not just strength edition and stuff with him. The guy knows basketball. He played division one basketball. He knows basketball and the way he got guys to work and best thing about tim was he always told them the truth. Always you know. He didn't care if it pissed him off but he was always going to tell them as what he thought was the truth. It was a great experience. Just you know working those few summers with him. Oh definitely and then Thinking about maybe transitioning of then. You're with the clippers. When you first got there was kind of the same thing you're doing with the bulls that things change was similar. Well what happened. Was that the coach. That i hired me that i worked for vinny. Del negro we. We got fired by the bulls and in right away within a month. He was hired by the clippers and He basically called me. Said we're going to la. I said all right. Let's go after we got fire by the bulls eye was going back to california to teach high school again. I was just going to go back and resume my teaching and he gets hired. And we we get hired by the clippers and we came and that was the summer that The blake was his rookie year..

"It doesn't matter where he goes so he might as well just get the pick of what he where he wants to play. Somebody who's competitive. Why wouldn't he. Why would he go off to like sacramento or something like that you know. I think there was bad. Blood between him. Doc because like collect pieces that work with him and even though he is definitely not. The same player was re. I started out with doc. Philly could definitely use that kind of power forward backup center because you have behind b but power which we knows not sufficient at all and when you think about it docks. The guy who made blake into who he is as Spot up shooter. Because before them vinny del negro was all like oh just dunk it as much as you can and every other person i was there. So do you think there's bad blood like see. I'm just right now saying so it doesn't bite us in the ass. I'm speculating. Speculation is bad but dammit sometimes it's one thing he he has a little bit that you know that king petty and have to be like you got no philadelphia how to be asking for him right hands on what happened when he was when he was available to be a free agent because he did not stick around with clippers he went off to detroit traded l. let's year impact competitor but was was docked because doc rivers still the gm or was he stripped of his duties at that point. That's what mars because if garlic the nba pool is so strong. That a coach doesn't necessarily have to be jacob. I think he was. I think what would that's the thing he if rivers was the gi and and he made the move then. Yeah i think there's some there's some tiny bit of beef there but if not then it wasn't his call because we was the one who lost the gm duties. So i wouldn't think that that he would probably wouldn't be a thing. But i don't know an macron depends on elliott. Yeah what. What was his options in this mini agency. That was was brooklyn was vaguely holland. The ever team a yeast. That wasn't you know. I a low tier team. I know his specifications was they wanna consider. Can we just say this right now. How bad of management are like i know. Full rebuilds and i know full blowing it up but The way that detroit is just screwing. I won't say their fans over. But they're making the former saint hanky for the philadelphia. Seventy sixers he's kind of jealous or the way they're just blowing it up because man man oh man they're doing all this up to not get anything out of it. They add drummond. he's over in cleveland. How he's going to be heading out. But those teams that even do anything when they had those guys. Maybe we don't like oh. This is not going anywhere. And we're paying these guys a ton of money to just sit here. Mas well i just let them go and start over at the big giant resentment of because if not going to be middling in the middle get possibly in eighth seed every couple years and then get ousted in in the first round like a sweep or five games. And what's that gonna lanjia in the draft exactly so and in the end as like major league baseball. You can draft a good guy in the casino. It's such a crapshoot. Is everything with the nhl for the most part to and even the nfl usually just position. You're missing but basketball you. You have to land on some guys and it's harder to make that is when you're in the middle. I'm really sad that i it just weren't even though i think they only made it once or twice especially the standing shame..

"I'll tell you that I do have a problem. When players like my teen I've never like that. Do you take it personally when they decide they want to get out? Absolutely absolutely. You should. I mean, you put so much into these guys then and you think you're doing the right thing, And then you get a calm they suddenly since wants to leave. And you take that personal. You don't take that. You know that They want to go join another team and then think that team is better. You've been take that part personal, but I think you know, Listen, player bombing is good, uh, in a lot of ways. Place for so many years really had no rights. You know, I was a player Andre. Let's be honest. You have to play your way into greatness through up to be able to have that power because you know, I was average player a little bit above average. I think about a garden and said, I want to get traded. They would have, they would have done. They're not sending you where you want to go. That's exactly what Yeah, we're talking to Doc Rivers. Theseventies, six years head coach. How does it go over and Philly with you being called Doc? And you know how 76 or fans are? They're very territorial with the only doctor. That's Doctor. Yeah. I love the fans there because they remind me a little bit of Boston. They have what you would call Real passion. And so, the building the building I'm living in. The doorman says Hey, you know, I'm never calling you down. Uh And I'm said no, I'm good with that. You know, I thought it was a joke. Then I've been there now what? 67 months living there, and it's either. Hey, Mr Rivers are Hagelin. He's actually serious people not call me Doc was Doc's still around when you got into the MBA. Yeah, um I want to say play two or three years. You know, I've never met him and the first game we played him down with it gets injured. And and Mike Fratello comes up to me and says, Hey, You're a point guard, but I'm gonna need you to guard you know Dr J E was thinking this is this. Is that gonna go? Well, what was great about it? We got into the jump ball circle. And you know, Dr J reaches out and says, What's up? Doc s? Oh, that was a really cool moment. For me. That was really cool. I was happy. You did that. And you got to go back to college when Rick Majerus was your assistant coaching where you would a basketball camp when you were the doctor J T shirt. Yeah. I was a freshman in high school and Rick and L. McGuire. They didn't know my name. You know, they needed me to, uh, play now. The Bucks were there playing an exhibition game for us, the campers the only at nine players. And they needed 1/10 flare. Al McGuire stands up and says, Hey, Doc, come down and play. And I'm sitting there like looking just like all the other kids that get Who's Doc? And he pointed at me. And I realized that I was Doc on. I found out after the game that Rick Majerus. Total man that kid can really play. But I had a doctor J T shirt. So I told Rick and Hay and Al 50 times My name's Glen. My name's that doc, and they didn't want to hear it, so I just had to live with it. How did Dr J do against your defensive prowess? He did. Well, yeah, They're e don't know how well but he did very well. I remember we had Grant Hill on and he said later in his career, You know, I was supposed to be this defensive stopper, you know, and he was a great offensive guy. But you know, because he was limited with injuries. All of a sudden, he was a defensive stopper. He's got to go out there and guard LeBron And he said, I'm not a defensive stopper, but I had to have a role and that was basically it. Yeah, It's a tough rule. I tell you, especially late in your career when I was with the Spurs, you know, I was coming off the bench my last two years and Bob here would put me into just to stop people. Vinny Del Negro, Unfortunately, got people really warm by the time I got to get remember playing Allan Houston in Detroit, and I call the time out at three minutes on the floor. And Bobby was going crazy. What would you call a time out for it? So I can't guard this guy E. He was absolutely killing me. You know, I was laughing and joking. I'm not joking. I can't get him. Oh, I love that. You call the time out. But also Vinnie, let him score. You got to come in and try to, you know, shut it. He got a warm Way used to go, Benny Kerosene, you know, because I A o. How's your team? By the way? All right, love with them, and we have a lot of growing to do like it's a Very long, talented basketball team figuring out still how to win. You know what Winning? Looks like every day? They're young. Then, um, I have to remind myself of that using when you have a talented Thing that has a chance. You have a lot of veterans on this team, you know, other than Danny Green and white. This is really young Master Balti. And so they're really fun that goat You know, and we look at this from the outside, we go. Well, you should be out to help Ben Simmons shoot or, you know, it's like Lonzo ball. We should be able to help them shoot. Is it harder to help somebody this late in their career? You know when you're in your twenties, which sounds late that you haven't learned how to shoot or have that confidence. What role can you play in helping Been be a better shooter. What you want him to do is first be a better player, You know, Uh, t show him. What his talents can bring him. You know, For me, it's just passing in. His defense is his playmaking and Dennis and shooting always start with the free throw line. You know, I think you gain Ah, lot of confidence from that line. And you know our first conversation. Uh, together. I told him I want you to get on the line. Uh, 10 times again. I want you to make it to the foul line, 10 times a game and to me that started because When you see a player been made two free throws late last night in the game when you see a player willing to get fouled that tells you that their confidence is starting to grow. I think way too much were made about Ben Simmons in three pointers. You know, I like you don't need to be a three point shooter. Hey, needs to take him when they're they're you know if you know what I'm saying. Jimmy Butler in the play offs scored with 50 points last year without taking the three. You know, so you can still be very effective, especially with Ben's body type. What was that feeling? Like when you realize the Clippers didn't want to keep you Oh, it's hard one um, you know, because I know I can, coach, you know, And so when you're with that team, and it was not a easy year last year, Dan, you're in the bubble. Um You know, we have two guys didn't play most of the year. I mean, Paul, George and and quite Lynn. And I think had five practices together the entire year. So you know, you never got a chance to coach that real team. Uh, and get into their potential. Uh, but whenever you lose a job, it's hard, you know, because you believe you could do the job, and especially with that team, like I looked at that team and thought You know? Healthy. All year. I think we would have been hard to be, but we never had that in the bubble was disaster. We had guys you know, I think transmits 30 days in the bubble. Lou Williams had chicken Wing gates. If you remember how mad did you get it to him for going out to get chicken wings?.
