A man in South Carolina jumped on the back of a 10-foot alligator to save his girlfriend's dog as it was being dragged into a lake. Brent Carey was taking a walk with his girlfriend and her dog Chance when an alligator jumped out of the water and started to drag Chance into the lake. Carey jumped on the back of the alligator and frantically wrestled Chance out of his deadly jaws. Finally the gator gave up the little dog who ran safely to shore. Jessica Turner, Chance's owner, said she can't close her eyes without seeing little Chance's head in the gator's mouth. The Department of Natural Resources sternly informed Carey that he or anyone else should never jump on the back of a 10-foot alligator. Uh, just in case you were thinking of doing it. I'm Britt Savage for Animal Radio. Animals are people too. Animal Radio. Hey there animal lovers, Vinny Penn, your party animal on Animal Radio digging that song again. Got to tell you, that's Def Leppard, an acoustic version of their song Animal. I don't know why it's so important for me to get that out there, but hey, I wanted to. On a recent installment, I told you guys about the beloved family dog, Cruiser. We had several pets in my house growing up. Cruiser probably is the one on the biggest pedestal. He was a mini schnauzer, yes, all you guys out there with German shepherds and beautiful labs and rottweilers are thinking, wow, Vinny Penn had a mini schnauzer. But I'll tell you, he was awfully cool, even though what I'm about to tell you might make you question that even more. Nonetheless, told you about Cruiser recently. And ironically enough, right after that installment, moving a few boxes around in the house that we grew up in that my sister had since bought from my parents. And she kept Cruiser's chew toys, which I think is a bit over the top. I don't know, nasty dust bunny riddled chew toys, all masticated with big holes in them. Maybe some dog lovers out there who've lost their dog, you keep such things. I believe there are certain things worth keeping, like the collar, especially if you have the name on it and whatnot. The chew toys, a little over the top. But then again, my sister puts the rat in pack rat, so maybe that's the reason. Nonetheless, what we also found in another box, or what I found, was what I used to call Cruiser's Liberace sweater. Yes. Now bad enough, I'm not a big believer in sweaters on dogs in the first place, although I have seen some cool things. I recently saw a dog actually with a CBGB t-shirt on. I thought that was pretty cool. Certainly a way to strike up a conversation with the ladies. But one holiday season, my mom bought Cruiser a sweater that could only be described as a Liberace sweater. Liberace, for those of you who don't know, was a rather flamboyant, outrageously dressed pianist. And this sweater just screamed. Well it begs the question, this is the point of this week's party animal, this is what leads to the question. I think my mother thought Cruiser was gay. It's the only thing that I could come up with. My mother has since passed away, so I can't ask her. But when I found Cruiser's Liberace sweater, I thought, why did she buy this for him? It's not remotely masculine, the design, Cruiser's boy. Did my mother think Cruiser was a gay dog? And does that exist? Is there such a thing as gay dogs and gay cats? I gotta say no. I watched Cruiser frolick with other dogs. He really didn't treat the boy. Well there was that one friend of mine who had a dog named Thor, and Cruiser used to mount him, but don't they just mount him, you know, boy or girl? Look it's not going to change my feelings about Cruiser if I were to now discover, hey, I had a gay mini schnauzer. It's not going to change, I'm not going to go home and tear up that picture of the two of us on the beach that I hold so dear, but has there ever been any scientific studies? Have we determined if animals are capable of this? All I know at the end of the day is gay or straight, Cruiser, I love you, I miss you. But I gotta say, I would prefer if mom just bought you a, my owner went to Florida and all I got was this stupid doggy t-shirt. Vinnie Penn, party animal, Animal Radio. "Now it's appalling enough that he shows up in a vehicle named after an animal. But as the night went on and with his blackberry hanging in his hair and all the important telephone calls that he's making in his Gucci suit I say to him well you must have one hell of a day job and he said well this is my day job working for the animal shelter. Now there is just no way that working in an animal shelter in the valley, an animal shelter that I've seen and could use a good paint job, could generate enough capital for this man to be living this large. So we need the watchdog reports to just kind of look and make sure the money is going into the right place. So I stand by the fact that me giving him a kidney shot is not deserving of me spending a night in jail. Vinnie Penn, party animal, animal radio. Ernie Rodina is our horse expert, animal communicator Joy Turner, dog father Joey Vellani is your groomer, Vlade the world famous Russian dog, wizard and Dr. Debbie. Vlade, back from a much undeserved vacation last week. You actually got in trouble on the airlines. Is that correct? No, they got in trouble with me and the airplane because, you know, they try just to pick up the fight with me on every stop. And it was a four stops, four fights. Oh, will you tell us about it a little later on? Sure I will. I definitely will. Today, Doug Gray from the Marshall Tucker Band will grace us with his presence. He's a kitty I believe his animals are Cheech and Chong. Yes, two kitties. Two kitties, Cheech and Chong, Persian kitties. And he's on the way right here on Animal Radio. Also, Joey Vellani today will tell you how to get rid of that smell that your brachycephalic dog. And that means, of course, that they have that crunched up face like they've been chasing parked cars. If you have one of those dogs and their face smells, he'll have tips for you. Boy, it's hot in the studio. Open the window over there. I feel like a prisoner in this studio sometimes. I know. It seems like it's getting smaller with all these people in it. Speaking of prisoners, have you ever had this experience maybe where you have your brand new little puppy and you're concerned about letting them out of the backyard or going on walks or anything because you don't want them to be exposed to what's out there. It's sort of like an overprotective mother. And I can explain that before they've had their babies. I spent from like when I was born to 16 locked in my house because my mom didn't want me going out and getting in trouble. That's exactly why I'm on social. And that can make some dogs pretty on social too, couldn't it doc? Yeah, it sure could. That's actually what I do call the backyard prisoners. And it's a very misguided effort that a lot of pet owners will try to do to protect their from infectious disease and the idea that keeping them in the backyard will avoid exposure to any potential infectious disease. But what it actually does is it creates a real problem, both behaviorally and coming to the vet office or even the groomer. Love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Let me kiss you just for a bit. Oh my gosh. You're just telling me just honey in my heart. So keep going. Keep going. Well, this is actually something that, you know, in practice and very early on, I had a lot of fellow practitioners, you know, tell people this. And it's just not the way we want to think anymore. So we do want to be cautious. And, you know, we have to keep in mind that puppies do have an immune system that's developing. So they get immunity from mom when they're born. And that'll wear off between six to 16 weeks of age, which is important to be smart and not expose them to bad things. But it's also the golden period of socialization. And as Vlad would agree, yes, don't kiss my ring, please. That is the time when we want to get them exposed to those unusual, noisy things, new dogs, other pets, noisy people, all those things. And probably this misconception comes from the point because American society means ladies were pushed long ago to the point that they were telling them so breastfeeding is the bad thing. You have to get some synthetic milk. But people, if you get this puppy from reputable breeder and this puppy was sucking the mom's milk, that dog has a natural protection like the doctor says. Once it's in him, but don't be too cautious. Otherwise, you know, going to be for another people for another dogs. Keep going back. I love what you're saying. I've taken my dogs out when they were puppies, and I take them out to places that we're going to expose them to later. So as a pup, I took my dog out to the lake. I took him out to the forest. I took him out to the mountains. Now I was smart. I didn't take him where all the other dogs congregated. We wanted him getting out by the sights and the sounds and exposure to those things. What about Toys R Us? What about maybe huge grocery store like Kroger? What I was doing, I would have inductor some blanket. I put my doggy on this blanket and have treats in my hands. And I was harassing the people as I always do. Could you give my dog some treats? That's what I did all the time. That's a great idea. Now, the thing I would not advise and you have to be cautious. You have to pick the right situation. That's great to socialize to people. What I wouldn't recommend is take that puppy into PetSmart or to those big box pet stores. That is going to be the spot where there's a lot of dogs. You don't know those dogs' immune system, what vaccines they've had. So you want to avoid those group areas. Stay away from the dog parks with the puppy. Stay away from the community parks where all the other doggies are brought along. And definitely stay away from the pet stores until they're fully vaccinated. And that's alternative if some of your neighbor Mike or neighbor Kathy or mother-in-law or someone who you know have dogs, which you know are healthy and in good shape. This is a great idea to bring the puppies in and let them socialize. Of course, I always try to be brief profiling. I don't want to have any problems. So I always like stupid goldens in labs because they're just goofy. They're not going to do anything to the puppies. You don't want to be too overprotective of your animals like my mom was to me. And just isolating them in the yard doesn't guarantee that they can avoid any infectious diseases anyway, does it, doc? No, it doesn't. And I've had pets where they've come in and they've actually gotten Parvo sitting in their own backyard because they were trying to live under this lifestyle of not take the puppy out. And we can bring things like Parvo in on our shoes. Wildlife can bring in parasites and infectious diseases. So it doesn't prove to be 100% effective, this backyard prisoner technique. And my last thought is in the Midwest, Michigan and Chicago area where I worked, vets were on the site which as Dr. Davies said, they're not too protective too much. However, here in California and even Las Vegas area, I see the vice versa. And in those areas, I see much more like a behavioral-based problems as aggression toward other people or dogs just because of the socialization because when the puppy goes through the critical stages, you got to fulfill it or you're going to pay the price. 1-866-405-8405. If you have a question about your animals, now's the time to call. And we go to Angela. Excuse me. Hi, Angela. How are you? Hey, fine. How are you? Good. I understand you want to talk to Joey Vellani. Yes, sir. What's going on? Well, I've got a cat who just loves to be groomed to the point that when I'm at home, my mother's taking care of her. You know, the cat meets her at the door, runs up on the kitchen counter and jumps up there. My mother gives her a can of food and she may or may not eat the food before she runs through the door to the garage and jumps up on the grooming table to wake from my mother to brush her. And I'm explaining all this because this is not a cat that doesn't like to be groomed. The problem I'm having is, you know, the table is a plastic patio table and chair.

"Vinnie Penn coming at you on Animal Radio with the party animal segment. Cracked open my daughter's piggy bank the other day, at her urging of course. The economy has not gotten the best of me, although it's pretty damn close. Cracked it open because it was time for her to, she filled it all the way up over these years, she's six years old and she was ready to spend the loot in it. Got me to thinking, why a pig? Who's the person who came up with that years ago? Like, we're going to put, store all this money, let's store it in a pig. I don't really understand that. Why are we filling a, does anybody know the legend behind why it's a piggy bank? And why we're sticking the coins in its back? Do you know what it was like that morning? Having bacon and eggs with my daughter and explaining to her because she asked me why a pig, she's the one who actually instigated this party. I'm sitting there munching on bacon like, I wonder if she even knows what we're eating right now. I guess there was once nickels and pennies rolling around inside of, I don't know why it's a pig. What else should it be? I don't think an animal, why don't they just have little banks for children, little plastic banks that you put your money in and it says bank. And there's blue ones for boys and pink ones for girls. Why an animal? Why a pig? Email me. I kind of really want to know. Vinnie Penn, Party Animal on Animal Radio. Where are you calling from? Norfolk, Virginia. Norfolk, Virginia. You're on with Dr. Debbie. Hi. Well, hi there. Hello. I just have a question. My wife and I, we have two toy Pomeranians and we switched around their diet probably about a month ago. We went to Nature's Variety, which I guess is like the Instinct, which has more of a protein-based meal. At any rate, we're also doing raw food, you know, just a little bit like three of the little tablet thingies a day. But the big question is, I'm a hunter, a deer hunt, and this fall I'm going to go out and do some deer hunting. And if I do bring down a deer, you know, my wife is anti-hunting and I'm not, but I told her I was thinking I was going to bring the deer back, the deer meat back. And then I was thinking about since we have the dogs on the raw meal or the raw meat, whether or not we could give the dogs some of that venison in the pure form, in the meat. Because it looks like this food that we have here is kind of like almost been a little bit dehydrated. It thaws real quick. But I was thinking we could go with some venison meat. My wife expressed concern about that word about whatever possible diseases might be in the meat or whatever. And I'm just calling to see what your opinion is on that. Yeah. And oh, gosh, my opinion on raw food diets, I'm not a fan of them. I know that the argument for raw food diets is that that's what dogs eat in the wild and that's what they were kind of built, made for nutritionally. But in the pet setting and in a household setting, I think that it is a lot of stress and a lot of effort that is placed on the individual pet owner to become a nutritionist. And I really don't advocate, not that the venison could not be fed because there are a lot of venison based dog food diets out there. But my concern is that kind of twofold is one is that we're introducing raw meats into the home situation, which puts not only them at risk for foodborne illness, but even yourselves. Because any time that kind of raw diet is fed, you have the potential for bacterial related diseases being passed in the household. The other thing that I have a problem with is that these are little dogs we're talking about. And in most small dogs, you know, a 10 pound dog only needs 200, maybe 300 calories a day. So when we start adding all these other things into their food, it might be a useful use of those meat sources. So they're not going to waste. But, you know, there's calorie needs for these little guys. They only need a small amount of food. And I just don't see the need to kind of add in things there. But I know a lot of veterinarians out there may share a different opinion. I just I don't embrace that raw food diet. I like to go with sound veterinary nutrition that we know. Yeah, what we do is we in the morning when I get up, I get up early. So I just take out, like I said, we just do three of those little meat tablets or medallions, I guess, for each one of them, for both of them, you know, three and three. And then they basically will go back in the cage till I get home or my wife gets home from work. It's usually about five or six in the afternoon. And then we have out the regular, you know, little regular dog food that you see. But it's that nature variety, which is more the higher protein. And then they'll snack off of that as much as they will. But the raw food, the raw meat portion of it seems like it lasts them quite a while. We have the cat, our cats on the same thing. And, you know, one of the things I noticed right away with the cat is that the litter box is it doesn't smell anymore. You know, they aren't defecating as much. I mean, they still urinate as much as they used to because they're still drinking water, but they don't defecate as much because it is higher protein. And I don't know, I just I've noticed some pleasantries like the dogs when they defecate, it just it's not as I don't know how to put it. You know, it just doesn't seem as sloppy as it did before. I don't know if that's the proper way to look at it. Yeah. Well, I mean, I know there are definitely benefits that many folks have have reported. But as far as I guess I just fall upon the consistency and in prepared diets and knowing that you have a nutritionist kind of behind that. And for folks, and there are definitely, especially with this pet food recall in years past, there are good resources to help people design if they want to do home cooked diets. And that is something that, you know, if I have someone who's really sincerely wants to go that route, you know, I respect that decision. I don't agree with it. But I would want to make sure that we're kind of being educated about it and using some tools. And there is actually a very good veterinary resource, which is out to the public. There's a book by a Dr. Strombach that's about homemade diets. So I'd want to have some resource such as that. Or there's websites that can help with a veterinary nutritionist that kind of helps give you guidelines on things. Because, you know, there's about, you know, four to nine different types of supplements, if we're calling a home food diet, a home food diet that you might have to actually add into a pet's food, whether that's a raw diet or, you know, just something you're cooking up at home. So I would definitely be cautious and look for good resources to help you along that way. But I'm going to tell you, I'd stay away from the raw diets. Husband and dogs all running around the place. Well, then I just think it makes good sense for all of us to pack on up, go on outside, take our dogs and cats, our iguanas, our husbands. Let's take them for a walk right now. They need a walk. "But this was called a betta fish, betta fish. Nonetheless, Stella looks at her and says, I want to call her Magnolia. And it was really a moving moment. I looked at my daughter and I thought, that name is fantastic. We can call her Maggie for short. And she smiled. She thought that was a great idea. We got in the car with the little carrying case for the fish. And Stella stared at her the whole way home and was saying, I love you, Magnolia. I love you, Magnolia. We got home, transferred her into her new home, dressed it up. And Stella was looking at her and said, she's so beautiful. Daddy, thank you so much for buying me dandelion. And I said, dandelion? What happened to Magnolia? And she said, no, I changed her name. I want to call her dandelion. And I said, well, all right, you know, dandy for sure. That kind of works. Go with that. Dandelion it is. Not too long afterwards, one of my aunts comes over. First thing Stella wants to do is take her to see the fish. She says, you've got to come with me. You've got to come and see my fish. She runs over to see the fish. And I hear my aunt, who's 91 years old, say, hey, that looks just like Nemo. Wah, wah. Magnolia, who had become dandelion, had now become Nemo. So I have to sit Stella down and say, Stella, look, we can't keep changing the name. It would be like all of a sudden today if I just started calling you Sarah. To which Stella replies, I like that name, Sarah. I go to school with a Sarah. I want to name the fish Sarah. At this point, I'm a little bit out of my mind. I'm confused. I don't know which way is up. I don't know. Is it a girl? I always heard girls were fickle, but this was bringing it to new heights. Suffice it to say that this morning, as I'm leaving to come and cut these segments, I say to Stella, I'm going to go and talk about Sarah the fish today. She said, what kind of fish is it anyway? I heard you telling someone that it wasn't really a goldfish. I said, well, daddy's learning as it goes. Same as you. I think it's called a beta fish or a betta fish. And Stella says, all right, daddy, we'll go and tell everybody about Betty then. Vinnie Penn, party animal, animal radio. This is animal radio. "Louis Chicago Springfield in October 17th as we almost wrap up the tour will be in Kansas City hanging out with the wayside waifs and speaking of the wayside waifs they are probably ground zero for classes in non-bullying Allison Basinger how you doing Allison I'm doing great thanks for having me tell us all about wayside waifs over there what you do specifically well I mean do you have two hours give me the abbreviated version darn it well specifically we have a beautiful almost 50 acre campus here and we really make sure that we're giving all of the animals a full circle of care so we have a pet adoption services and we have a FEMA certified animal rescue team wow that sounds like an incredible facility you are teaching a local bullying course is that correct that is correct what is that all about because they don't have that where I live they should because I get bullied all the time and I make fun of bullying but it really is a very serious problem it's absolutely a serious problem and wherever you live we could certainly hook them up with our curriculum because we are launching it nationally for other organizations okay but let me tell you about it it's really important for us to talk about bullying as the action rather than bullies as naming or labeling a person with that action and the reason it's important to separate is because a lot of times kiddos who are bullying other kids or animals often they're doing so because they have hurt in their own life or they're doing it because that's what they've seen the adult people around them doing so you know I'd really love to go and teach this class to some adults not to get my sassy pants on but you know a lot of times adult people we got to remember that we're the examples of to the little people and we got to check ourselves and hold ourselves to high standards sure specifically we teach third fourth and fifth grade students well now where the animals come in well they come with us oh the class okay yes so we're talking about core values compassion responsibility self-control integrity and every day we look at one of those core values and how do we put those into practice with our people friends but also with our animal friends and so I have a dog named justice and I also have a dog named Paxton we call him Pax for short and they come with me into the classrooms and that they're just walking around the classrooms interacting with the students while we're talking about how do we use these practice these core values with our people friends and our animal friends do you have any stories where you actually witnessed a transformation of a child who might have been bullying other children do you have two hours justice he's an older guy he's a Cocker Spaniel he's about 14 years old and he has got a lot of prestige about him so he wears a necktie when we go into the classroom and one day we were specifically talking about the core value of compassion and this little boy said oh Miss Basinger I think justice's necktie is too tight around his neck and I said to him oh my goodness it's beautiful thank you so much for showing so much compassion for animal friends I went over and I checked his tie justice's tie and sure enough it was not too tight I was very careful to make sure I had the two fingers of space in between there but he's an old man so he has some old man wrinkles hanging down that makes it look like it's too tight so I told the students that but then again praise the student for showing so much compassion for justice and about five minutes later the same exact little boy took his elbow and elbowed really hard the boy sitting next to him and I said whoa whoa wait a minute do you remember all that compassion that you were showing justice with his necktie being too tight would you ever take your arm and elbow justice like that and he he got tears in his eyes and he looked at me and said I would never hit justice that way and I said well we we can't treat our people friends that way either so you know the thing is that I think teachers here often like bullying we got to talk about this again you've been talking to us about bullying since we were in kindergarten but I I will tell you that when we bring the animal aspect into the conversation of bullying not only does it create those poignant moments where you can just call it straight out like that and it also gives students the opportunity to practice those core values with animals because some of them don't have it at home but it it makes students pay attention and hear things in a completely different way it really is important for us to help hurting people not be hurting anymore so that our animal friends can be safe and so can our people friends oh I love that words to live by amen Alison Basinger joining us wayside waves and we're gonna head back to the phones in just a couple of seconds for your calls hey it's Vinnie Penn on animal radio coming to you with the party animal segment I'm I know I'm way late in this one but I still can't get over it seeing in the news ways back I think it was at one point in March a big story going on about people who were leaving everything to their pets the new new movement in their wills they were leaving everything to their pets and is is that allowable should you be able to do it or maybe it was a local story to my neck of the woods Connecticut but I don't think so but if it is new to you or if you do know what are your thoughts on this leaving everything to your pet I on the one hand the miserable bitter 41 year old me loves it because it's like you're sticking it to so you're sticking it to your brother you're sticking it to your sister you're sticking it to your spouse like I hereby leave everything to rover so take that my 22 year old beagle gets everything you get nothing but then there's another part of me that's keenly aware of the fact that a Pete that the people who are leaving everything to their pets are like in love with the dog and just want the world to know how much they love them and can the dog comprehend the real estate market how much he can get for the house I mean is the dog going to put the the house for sale and stand out in front and it would he be able to throw an open house I don't know where does it go from there then again what other paths are you leaving everything to you leaving it to the cat I mean cats are territorial as it is I got a gut feeling cats they're sharp creatures they'll know like this is mine so when that pissed off sibling comes in and decides to ignore the wishes of the deceased everybody's got a sibling who ignores the wishes of the deceased especially when it's apparent and they come in and say screw that you know this was mommy's and I'm taking it even though she left it to you that cat is gonna drop on her back from the ceiling like a ninja never let her out of the house with grandma's necklace leaving everything to your pet you left "Vinnie Penn, party animal coming at you on Animal Radio. Nice to be back. Thanks for having me back. All right, I know all of you out there. I'm going to sweep. I'm going to say all of you out there. Maybe the fact of the matter is 85% of you are on Facebook. You're doing the FB thing. You're on there. You're updating your status, especially if you're obsessed with your pooch. You're on there saying Lizzie just got home and is scratching Rogo's belly. I don't know where I came up with the name Rogo, but we're all doing the Facebook thing. One question I have for you is I'm being inundated, not with friend ads. I don't know why. Not a lot of people asking me to be their friend, but I am being inundated with all these various causes. I mean, from the silly so-and-so wants to know if you want to join the Brady Bunch trivia group, ignore, to various, you know, the race to end cancer group, and then you can check on more information and see if you want to be a part of it. I see a lot on there for animals, and I wanted to kind of put it out there. Are we diluting the waters here on Facebook by fashioning these kind of grassroots groups? Are they taking away from the bigger, more well-known groups that are actually generating capital and doing some good as far as spaying and neutering and saving strays and saving shelters in general? Are these little groups that our bored friends are putting together on Facebook, are they chipping away at a larger stone and taking away from something that's been around for 20 years? I'm going to go and see if I can add Bob Barker as a friend. Do you think he would accept my ad? I think he would. I think he might. I'm going to see if he's even on Facebook. Geez, all that tanning. He doesn't even have much of a face left. But you tell me, is Facebook chipping away at the large stone of animal causes? Or should we join all these groups and every group? Hit me up at Animal Radio. Vinnie, AnimalRadio.com.

"Good breeder. And I have to say the Internet derived dog. Sometimes you can get some fine dogs, but there are certain lists on the Internet that I won't say what the lists are. But sometimes there's a lot of lemons that come out of those lists where you can get a pop off off. But I can tell you, I mean, a lot of people are hung up on the pedigree thing, the one free. I love mixed breed dogs. You get such great dogs. I had an airedale shepherd. I've got a lab shepherd now and I mean, it's just there's so much fun. They're durable, they're smart, they live a long time. You get all kinds of great things when you mix breed dogs and you find dogs like that. You just have to wait until a good litter comes up and then you just go watch them and spend time with them and you can figure out which one would be best for you. Okay, thanks for the help. Good luck with that Johnson's pictures when you get your dog. We want to see. Aren't much healthier, doctor Debbie. You know, in general, yeah, there's something called hybrid vigor and it's the idea that when you mix two extreme genetic selections and you mix them together, you actually hopefully get good of the good of both breeds and you're diluting out the bad of both breeds. So yeah, there's a lot to that. It's not always a precise science, but I'm a fan of mud. Ever since I got boss, I'm totally sold on the little mongrels too. I've never had a single breed dog, they've all been mixed, and it's just so wonderful. You know what? An airedale shepherd is absolutely the best dog there is and it's so hard to find an airedale in a German Shepherd that get together. And if you do, what a great dog that is. Oh my gosh, he was such a great dog. Whether you lucky dog, don't forget you can get your fix of animal radio anytime you want with the animal radio app for iPhone and Android. Why is it that your goldfish always die when you go on vacation? Now, you know, you know, you know what I'm talking about. You've taken care of them all year. You're 6 and you've managed to keep them alive for the past year and yet you go away for a week and come back a either to the sob story of the year from some relative you never see or friend of your mothers who was given the job of feeding the bat or B to a fish that doesn't look remotely like Pokémon, the fish that you left a week before. As a sidebar, that's something right there. If you are going to care for your friend or family member's child's fish, take a look at them. You know, if you're going to so choose to starve him for a week, it just figure on replacing him because you're a cold callous person like that and mom has overlooked that fact during the hiring process. You could still take a look at him so you know what you're replacing him with. Nothing worse for a 6 year old to come back to find his goldfish and you've replaced him with a piranha. So yes, please, if you're going to murder the goldfish, replace it with a goldfish. Isn't that a crazy concept? But I don't know what it is if every time you are the fish died, we think Grammy overfed him. Well, I can see that. Grammy over feeds me every time I stay with her. I didn't know you could really die from that. That's always the excuse that your goldfish was overfed. Now this comes from a real place. When I was 6, 7 years old, I had two goldfish, cheech and Chong. When I came back, there was just one big fat fish in the tank, not two, one. Big fat clearly different fish in which my brother, of course, in a continuing effort to torment me informed me that cheech had eaten Chong. But I still didn't buy it since it wasn't even the same color. It took years to unravel the mystery, all of us have that long-standing pet incident from our youth that has taken years to uncover what's going on. And that was my it took years finally for my mother's best friend, Lenny to say, luck, the fish died. I didn't know what to do. I had missed the day. I just went and bought your new fish, wasn't that nice to me? The classic, well, what about me? You know, I felt terrible. Here you were, my best friend son. And I killed your vids. What about me and you're sitting there like, I don't know, what about cheech and Chong? How many pads party animal? Animal radio. Let's take another call for doctor Debbie. We have Tony on the phone. Welcome to the show, Tony. Hi. What's going on? I'm calling because my daughter had originally two dachshunds and then she had a litter of 5 that went on to have she kept them then she went and had another liter 5 that she had a total of 12 only gave one away because she doesn't have the heart to do any of them away. She doesn't have the heart to give them away. And I don't know. She said that when she was younger, I hadn't given away her daughter and she was very harmful. So she quit. So let me get this straight. You have 11 dogs? Or her daughter, your daughter has 11 dogs? Yes. Oh my goodness. So the first thing I would say is the benefits of spaying and neutering here. I can not stress enough that we need to intervene. And we need to get some help for her household because there is no reason to have repeated breedings just for the experience or because she loves dogs. We have to make sure. Well, it's gonna happen. Dogs do that. They will reproduce when given the option and the opportunity. It is our job as their human caretakers to make sure that doesn't happen. So we need to take those steps. So whether you have to walk her in to a veterinary office and help get her that help, that she needs in making that connection and to make that determination. Now, some people might be able to keep 11 dogs and to cure for them appropriately. But my general feeling is that that is too many dogs for one household. Unless you have support. Now, octomom and all those people who have multiple bursts can attest that you need help to take care of that many beings, whether they're human or animal. So that would be my concern.

"Back again. Vinnie Penn party animal. I left a lot of you hanging in the balance last time around. The first ever two part party animal. And here it comes at you. Reflecting a bit on a few weeks back, the holidays got into a bit of a bickering match with someone, a buddy of mine who's got the greatest dog in the world. His name is spaz, and it fits, but as much as spaz is as spaz, he's just a great dog after you're there 5 minutes and he has his three seizures and does four back flips and jumps into your groin area so repeatedly you're convinced you'll never be able to have another child. He totally chills out and hangs in your lap and he is absolutely a member of this family. My buddy Steve's family. And yet lo and behold, I'm over there for the holidays. And I see the stockings hung with care because soon saint Nick would be there. No stocking for. Spaz. I got into it. How could you not have a stocking? He's a member of the family. Now make it a mistake. Fans of the party animal segment, no, we have a little fish, Betty. And maybe I'm drawing a thin line here. We don't have a stocking for Betty. You don't get a stocking for the goldfish. I don't know. I mean, there are animals, there are pets you get stockings for. You don't get stockings for. A dog. You get a stock four. A cat. You get a stocking for. I know from there it gets a little bit blurry and I could see maybe getting one for the bird in the house. Maybe the hamster? No, I don't see the fish. We had a turtle. We didn't have a stocking for the turtle. Maybe I'll take some emails on it. Vinny and animal radio dot com. But it got ugly over there. I mean, of course, the Jack Daniels didn't help, but he got to put my buddy Steve got a bit belligerent when I questioned where spaz is stocking was.

"Him. I heard my nephew's Ricky and Jay, the Ringo sleep and my look at Ringo sleeping. I mean, this is great for all of those people out there who still have a little bit of paranoia when it comes to leaving the peppy. All you do is have the canal owners words when you go back. I mean, the fact of the matter is kennels are fantastic. There's more than enough loving candles out there, but every once in a while, you hear your horror stories, there wouldn't be 2020 or prime time live without those kinds of horror stories. What would Barbara Walters do? Outside of the view. But it was great now. There was so much peace of mind. The boys were worried about the Ringo every day. And to be able to tune in in the morning and watch in action, watch them chasing a ball, which is great. I mean, every day, they started off in a great mood. Except for the day I had to explain to them what dry humping was and why Ringo was behaving in that manner. But my sister Julie says they're going to resolve that issue as soon as they get home. But nonetheless, what a beautiful thing to be able to tune in and see them playing and log in and their video channels. They live out in Nevada and Las Vegas. So you think the boys would know about dry humping already. Especially Ricky east 12. I'm living in Vegas. But they've got to be all over and if they aren't, they're definitely something that's going to be happening. Video kennels, it's peace of mind for a couple of dollars. We had an email from a listener whose dog was afraid of a new laminate floor. She said sometimes he seems to forget about it and find some peace. But invariably, he refocuses on the floor and becomes afraid again. What can she do? It's pretty interesting, isn't it, dogs become afraid when they have a negative experience, a bad experience, and associated with something. So you know how dogs get excited and run full speed. He was used to some other floor covering and here it is this nice slippery laminate. Maybe the dog took off on that new lemon and floor when he got excited and couldn't stop. Slid across the floor and banged into the wall or just never had his legs taken out from under him like that before. So at that moment he became afraid and associates it with the floor. Now because she said he forgets sometimes and finds peace, that's the time to give him attention and reward him and say good dog. Give him a treat. You can use that time to refocus his mind away from the fear and start forming a positive association with being on the floor by giving him affection and a treat. Now understand this is calm affection. Then you put his leash on and walk them around on the floor, being all calm and acting like a leader. And when he's successful, you tell him what a good dog he is. If he's too afraid to venture on the floor, just stand there. Say nothing. Look straight ahead and stand there for three, four minutes. Then take off and try to walk the dog across the floor of briskly. If he won't go, just stop and start over again. You can't even walk in a circle away from the floor before turning back facing it and briskly trying to take off across it. Remember, you can't feel sorry for your dog, and you can't be tense. You've got to be totally calm and picture in your mind. You and your dog walking across the floor, like it's no big deal. The more common confident you are, the more you act like a leader, the more your dog is going to learn to trust you, and to follow you. It's all about being a leader and building trust. So remember to walk your dog every day for at least 30 minutes. On your side or behind you never in front. And remember, these things don't happen overnight. Whenever you try to change your dog's behavior or eliminate a fear, build positive associations, it takes time, consistency, and patience. Get more tips and animal radio dot com. "More Vinnie Penn coming at you on animal radio. You're a resident party animal. I want to dedicate this episode of this installment rather of party animal to my beloved dog cruiser cruiser was a mini schnauzer that was in our family for a dozen years, it still can't even think about him without getting a little bit sad. And I'll tell you, family members, human family members who've passed away, who I think about and don't feel really anything. But Cruz are still makes me sad. And the other day a friend of mine had to put his dog to sleep, and it was very difficult for him. And we were at the bar, having a couple of drinks, a bunch of people sitting around the bar. And I told him that I knew where he was coming. If I was trying to empathize, I told him how difficult it was when we lost cruiser. All of a sudden, people start chiming in with their dog, death stories. And it got me to thinking, why are dog owners and cat owners? And pet owners in general competitive with death stories. One complete stranger said you guys think you have it tough. I had to kill my dog myself, shoot him in the backyard. Now, one. I don't know. This guy might be in the witness protection program for all for all I know. Why he would admit that is beyond me. But I've noticed that dog owners, in particular, more than cattle is their competitive, was that stories. They could hear you, this has happened for years, the biggest oh, I remember the morning. I got the phone call that we had lost cruiser, cruiser, of course, was in the hospital for a few days in the end. It was a devastating I had to go and tell the rest of my family. Whenever people over here that all that awfully so that's got to be difficult. I ran over my dog and the driveway with my own, what? Why are you competing with my dog's death story? Why do people do that? When it comes to their pets, you're not gonna top it. Well, maybe the guy who ran his over a dis driveway, maybe that tops it. Vinny Penn. Party animal. Okay, well, hopefully we'll have someone on 6 67. Just around the corner there. Doctor Debbie, I understand this week, the big buzz has been about this rogue turtle. We've been talking about this a little earlier. What's the deal? Yeah, so I was intrigued by the story. This is a story about Zeke, who is a boxed turtle. 31 year old box turtle, that was a beloved pet that went rogue and basically ran away from home with a little help from the household cat. The key somehow left a door open, oops, oops, turtle got lost. And kind of wonder what that cat was thinking. I was wondering. Yeah. But yeah, so his family is searching for him. It's been several weeks and they're searching high and low trying to find this guy. Devoted a little pet. And they're really looking all over, turning over every stone in the grass plate of grass, as you can see. How far could he have gotten those? Well, they don't move very fast. And they usually have a very close home environment. But since he's been missing for so long, there's definitely concern. Now, you can identify turtles. And in fact, in the desert, here with desert tortoises, if we keep them, we actually can put a phone number in epoxy to their shell as an identification source, but somebody's got to find it. And that's the thing. So they're trying to get the word out for this guy. Don't they burrow under the ground? They can. Yeah, so they definitely can seek into mud when it's really warm, so they'll do that to stay cool. And these guys basically live under leaf cover. So you know, they'll be kind of in the forest and they'll find out little spots to hide, so it could be quite challenging to track down mister

There's some show she walks on the BBC where snobbish British equestrians fight over who gets to ride cat. Who gets to ride? Calico today. Calico is my horse, Don, you mind. And now all of a sudden my daughter Stella thinks she can take care of a horse ride a horse when what comes out of a horse is twice the size of her. But yes, her goldfish died and I said to her, well, we can move on. What's the next pet you would like? Are we ready? Is the family ready for dog? I still didn't really recover from the passing of my last dog. But for my kids, I will. And she's like, I think I kind of know what's next. I'm like, oh, is it going to be a cat? I'm not that I've had some friends with cats that I love. But I was a little bit worried it was going to be a cat. And she goes, a horsey. Okay. Let's go down to the horse store. Pick out a horse. And what's the name for it? And of course, Stella ever creative with her names for horses was, well, I just said, horsey, so yes, when the time comes and we're in the bigger house, and if this passion continues, thanks to that snobbish BBC series, Vinnie Penn, your party animal. Will be the owner of horsey, the horse. See you next week. This is animal radio. Hey, Eric and rasche here hosts of the CBS TV series lucky dog. You're listening to animal radio, call the Dream Team now with a free animal radio app for iPhone and Android. We just got an email about the turtle talk we had last week. They were very happy. Someone who owns a snapping turtle says we've been very un turtle centric and really like to hear all the turtle talk. But you actually, you're dealing with another turtle situation. What's up with that? Oh yeah, I mean, we see turtles all the time. I guess we don't talk about enough on ear. So we're going to have to work on that. But yeah, I've got a box turtle. That is here, and because his nails in his beak have grown out excessively. And yeah, you're thrown off by the beak thing, aren't you? Don't have beaks, and I hate to tell you. That's a bird. They do have beaks. In fact, because birds and reptiles are closely related, the front of their mouth is very firm and it has a very hard strong makeup there. And what can happen, this little guy has some nutritional problems. They on his family just has to get under control here. So he's been eating too high of a protein diet, very vitamin poor. So it has caused his beak, which is kind of the snout. To grow out too long. And it looks like he's kind of has like a big overgrown bite on his teeth. So we have to trim that back today. Trim his nails. We're doing some vitamins and some antibiotics and trying to get his husband to be back to where it ought to be. He's 20 years old. Wow. So that's not a toucan. It's a turtle. But yeah, so we're going to try to keep this guy around for another decade or two. How long did turtles live? You know, box turtles can live up to 50 years. So if we get this guy on the right track with husbandry, you know, he can live a long time. Get him some fruits, vegetables, and it's just like, you know, Joey, you know, you've got a bird, you gotta give them an all around it. You can't pigeonhole into one thing. That's true. My bird likes pizzas, spaghetti, meatballs, you know? All the good Italian foods. Exactly. Let's see, I think we have Rick on the phone. Hey Rick, how are you doing? I'm doing pretty good. How are you doing? Good, what's going on in your world? Well, I have a snoodle. He's about a year and a half, two years old. Very rambunctious, but he loves walks and to play and all that, but he does not like a car. He'll get real shaky. Like writing in a car, he starts panting, salivating and then eventually he'll throw up. Well, and that's definitely a hard thing. Are you out traveling right now with him? No, no, no, no. He's at home. I'm a truck driver. I'm actually an island park Idaho, which is beautiful. Awesome. Yeah. All right. Well, the trick with dogs that have problems in the car travel. There's two components to it. There's actually what's more of a fovea, which causes them to be fearful, trembling, shaking, drooling, and then there's the dogs that have true motion sickness. Now, a dog with true motion sickness doesn't have to go through those other symptoms. And in fact, a dog with motion sickness, it's really just when they get on those windy turns that they'll start to get nauseated and vomit. However, a dog that has motion sickness can build up those phobias because they know what's going to come. So you can get an overlap of two problems here. So we have to address it that way. The first part, if we've got time and opportunity before car travel, the best thing we can do is condition a dog to the car. And that can be a very labor intensive process where we gradually train them to being near a car being in the car, being in the car gradually that goes down the back of the driveway, and then eventually working up to going around the blocks. Now, every dog is different. And you can't push them. So we may spend a week or two just getting them to do basic obedience sitting right next to the car before we actually enter it. If we notice any fearful behaviors, ears are down and back, tail is low, slinking, looking around, licking the lips, then we're pushing them too far, and we don't want to take that next step and put them in the car and drive them around because we're not accomplishing anything. We're setting ourselves further back. So gradually we build up to this. We practice this with treats, rewards, and then eventually we build up to those smaller bits of time getting around the car driving the car that we can hopefully build them up to positive experiences. So that's the hard and the long way to correct these type of things when we've got anxiety. Some of the short term things that we do, there's a lot of different things. So some dogs, if we really feel that they have motion sickness, I may use a drug like dramamine or there's another one that's approved for dogs called serenia, which helps to decrease their motion sickness and truly an emotion sickness type problem. Do anything for that anxiety. So we got to work on that too. So I may add in some things like the thunder shirt, which can be a calming effect. As well as things like dog pheromones, those help to kind of relax a minute natural way. Those could be in collars, sprays, things like that. So those are some other ways that we can help make training a little bit easier or just even that car travel that you have to do all of a sudden. And I guess the other thing that I should mention is that when we already traveling with dogs in a car, we don't want them to run helter skelter all around the car, because that can actually be very upsetting. It helps to feed their anxiety with the more they can run from window to window and drool and lick the glass. It really makes them very much nervous. So seat belts or dog crates are a great way to keep them confined and that will help decrease some of that motion sickness that they'll have.

"Greetings, animal radio lovers, it's time for a brand new installment of the party animal. That's me. Vinny Penn actually it's a very special episode of I want to be reverential of the party animal. Rest in peace, Betty. For those of you who have been following the party animal adventures over there, it's already been well over a year now. Getting close to two, I think. You know that my daughter and I went out and bought a goldfish named Betty, a beta fish, and Betty lived exactly one year and died passed away this past 4th of July. My daughter was unbelievably strong upon the loss and for those of you out there who really know and really have paid attention. You might be wondering it was Vinnie Penn, a hypocrite, and he did a big rant about why goldfish were unceremoniously flushed down the toilet and not giving a given a proper burial. I'll have you don't. I am a hypocrite, but I just wasn't in this particular instance. She was buried in the backyard and words were said, a moving eulogy was delivered by myself and by my 6 year old daughter. Interestingly enough, though, Betty, just a few weeks before we had bought another fish. Named Elmer and had one of those split tanks, we bought a new tank and it was split, so now my son had his own fish and Betty had and my daughter had her own in Betty. And Betty died not long after Elmer's arrival. Could it have been fish aside? Could it have been could Betty have killed herself? In all honesty, those of you out there, no fish. Could this have happened? I mean, they weren't in the same tank, and yet somehow it wasn't long after that, that petty swam her final day. And now my daughter wants a brand new pet. Oh, I can't even get into that. I will tell you a next week's installment. What my daughter's new pad is now that her goldfish has passed away. What she wants it to be anyway. But give me an email Vinnie at animal radio dot com. We added a fish to the tank, a split tank, though, important to know. And the one that was there longer died only a few weeks later. You know, there's been so many problems with the snacks that have come in from China. This one is a product that you can get at target and I'll tell you what it is and what to look out for coming up on animal radio news. Stuck in the bathroom Doc halligan didn't want to come into the studio today. It was probably Mexican food last night. Was that? Yeah, it wasn't good. We are back in a very lucky to have on the show Christy pace. Christie has a very special dog hi, Christie. How are you doing? Hi, I'm good. How are you doing? Good. Now the dog's name is at nakia. Yes. And that's Hawaiian, right? Yes it is. What does that stand? What does that mean in Hawaii? It actually means puddles. Puddles. And why did you name your dog petals and tell us a little bit about your dog? Very special though. Yeah. Well, Nikhil, he was originally abandoned in a full closed home as a really young puppy with his litter mates. And it was in the winter time in Nebraska and he was only puppy that was actually found frozen to a puddle. Oh no. And he had severe frostbite and he lost all his toes and all four legs. Four legs. While you see dogs that maybe lose one leg or two legs, but four legs, that seems like that's a lot of adversity that dog has to go through, huh? Right, yeah. But he has a really strong spirit. Now, I wouldn't most shelters put a dog like this down. He actually went to

"Good day, animal lovers, Vinnie Penn, your party animal coming action. I'm animal radio. Got an interesting question I'd like to ask you, folks out there. And of course, feel free to hit me up at vineyard animal radio dot com, and it is Vinny. IE at the end, much as my father hated that. He always thought I should go VIN NY, but another story perhaps for another time. My question is this, why is it whenever I park my car in a convenience store parking lot and I'm getting out and cutting between two other cars on my way to walk into the store. The rabid aggressive hostile beast that someone has left and their vehicle usually a pickup truck. It is ninja quiet until I'm in between the two cars and then lunges through the halfway rolled down window of the truck just at the time that I'm passing through the cars. Can anyone answer that? It's like these dogs are left in the front seat of the vehicle and almost trained to now. You don't make a sound, don't let anybody know you're in there until they're creeping in between our car and the car next to us and then scare the bejesus out of them because you know the guys who own these dogs say things like bejesus. The other day I was on my way into the convenience store. I just wanted to grab a soda, which I didn't even wind up doing because the Mountain Dew would have finished me off, the heart attack I had in the parking lot, it would have been the final blow. I'm walking in between a car and a truck. This German Shepherd pit bull rottweiler hybrid. Yes, I believe they exist. And I'm going to call it a German ryler. German wyler. I'm going to call it a German wyler, comes lunging through the halfway rolled down window just at the moment. I mean, not three minutes into three seconds before, not three feet before just as I'm in between, and there's just enough window down so that when he's barking wildly, his saliva splatters me on the side of my face, and I have to scream, which I've been told, I scream kind of like a girl in the parking lot of the convenience store. The owner, of course, thinks this is hilarious, but if I was with my 5 year old, that would have been it. The dogs would have been off limits for the rest of her life. So please, somebody out there tell me, are dog owners training their dogs to sit like ninjas on the front seat of their vehicle with the window rolled halfway down, train to wait. Just until that person cuts in between their vehicle and the one next to it. Just for laughs, is it? I got it. It's a hidden camera shop. It's when dogs scare the crap out of you when parking lots. "Hey, it's Vinnie Penn coming at you with another party, animal installment on animal radio. Well, we did it for those of you who listened to these segments of mine here, told you a ways back that my 5 year old daughter Stella. She's ready for a pet. She was right, we looked at a lot of different pets. I wanted to start her off with the fish. I was a matter of fact. She actually had already she's had a turtle and a frog. But they've since moved on, and it was time to get her another. I wanted to start her with a fish. I think that's the good starting point for any four, 5, 6 year old. We went to the pet store and we picked out just the most beautiful pink fish, Stella picked her out herself, picked out a great one. We got the nice little aquarium and she dressed it up and decorated it really nicely. We went down to the beach earlier that morning, she picked out a beautiful rock to put in the tank. We were all set up. She looks at the fish. And it's called a beta fish. If I'm pronouncing that correctly, BE, TTA. So it's not essentially a goldfish. I don't know. This was kind of a new terrain for me, even though I had goldfish when I was a kid. I think they were goldfish. I had two, cheech and Chong. But this is called a better fish, beta fish. Nonetheless, Stella looks at her and says I want to call her Magnolia. And it was really a moving moment. I looked at my daughter and I thought that name is fantastic. We can call her Maggie for short, and she smiled, she thought that was a great idea. We got in the car with the little carrying case. For the fish and Stella stared out of the whole way home I was saying, I love you Magnolia. I love you Magnolia. We got home. Transferred her into her new home, dressed it up and Stella was look iron said she's so beautiful. Daddy thank you so much for buying me dandelion. And I said, dandelion. What happened to Magnolia? She said no, I changed her name. I want to call her dandelion. And I said, oh, all right. You know, the dandy for sure. That kinda works. Go with that. Dandelion it is. Not too long afterwards. One of my acts comes over. First thing Stella wants to do is take her to see the fish she says, you gotta come with me. You gotta come and see my fish. She runs over to see the fish, and I hear my aunt, who's 91 years old, say, hey, that looks just like Nemo. Magnolia, who had become dandelion, had now become Nemo. So I have to sit still down and say, still, look, we can't keep changing the name. It would be like all of a sudden today, if I just started calling you Sarah, to which stellar applies, I like that name Sara, I go to school with the Sarah. I want to name the fish Sarah. This point, I'm a little bit out of my mind. I'm confused. I don't know which way is up. I don't know if is it a girl. I always heard girls were fickle, but this was bringing it to new heights. Suffice it to say that this morning, as I'm leaving to come and cut these segments, I say to Stella, I'm going to go and talk about Sarah the fish today. And she said, what kind of fish is it anyway? I heard you telling someone that it wasn't really a goldfish. I said, well, daddy's learning as it goes. Same as you. I think it's called a beta fish or a bed of fish and.

No you're you're thinking of the fact how you still can't get the smell out of the sofa that he fell asleep in every time he was over your house for the last thirty years. I want obituaries.
