Alan Dershowitz: TV Legal Analysts Are Wrong About Jan. 6 Hearings

"These people have gotten it wrong all the time Jeffrey toobin has about a zero correct rate Everything he's predicted virtually has turned out false because his predictions are based on wish fulfillment What do you want And you get all these people saying that crimes have been committed They don't understand the difference between something that may be unlawful in something that's criminal giving you an example A policeman fails to give Miranda warnings to a suspect That's unlawful but it's not criminal A person tries to run for president at the age of 34 That's unlawful but it's not a criminal And they're completely confusing this I've seen no evidence whatsoever of any violation of any criminal statute in every civil libertarian or to be upset at people who say well we should stretch the obstruction statute to fit the crime We should stretch the conspiracy statute to commit the crime to cover the crime And that's exactly what very very McCarthy art people did in the 1950s and what radicals have tried to do now And the victims of the American people We have a right to due process And our constitution is being distorted These people think that the ends justify the fact getting Trump is the main end And anything Anything that gets Trump is appropriate I hear it from my Friends on Martha's Vineyard Well why are you defending these issues It means that Trump will be in office My God that's they say that's worse than Hitler They literally say that They make that analogy to me And you know I'm going to always defend the rights of anybody whether I agree with them or disagree with them Under the constitution people just don't understand that or pretend they don't understand

Obama and the Beach House Loopholes

"One more thing about mister Obama building his second mansion in Hawaii. He apparently is trying to retain a seawall that neighbors believe is eroding the beach, I guess he's not too concerned about the beach, and he couldn't be too concerned about global warming or climate change because supposedly climate change is going to cause the waters to rise. He's got two homes right on the water. One for $12.5 million in Martha's Vineyard, and now a multi-million dollar mansion in Hawaii. I mean, I do think at a certain point you've made enough money. Why the long face Barack? You're in Hawaii. On your multi-million dollar property overlooking construction on your new ocean front of state. Well, it seems like his neighbors are angry at him for destroying their beaches. Big green guy, Barack Obama is using a loophole to keep a hundred year old sea wall up, but people say it's eroding their beaches and screwing around with the coastal environment

The Ruling Class Has Become So Disconnected From the 'Muscular' Class

"So there's two types of economic classes in America. And by the way, one is not necessarily better than the other, right? There's the muscular class, and then there's the zoom and Skype class, right? So I'm part of the zoom in Skype class, okay? That doesn't make me a better person. It just so happens. I was able to keep on doing my work in the midst of the lockdown without having to lift boxes or wear a mask all day long. But the people that actually run the country, which I think never got the credit they deserved quite honestly during the pandemic, are the people that worked at the Amazon fulfillment centers. The people that are police officers, the people that are our firefighters, the people that actually drove trucks and instead, you saw this growing disconnect of the people in charge, have this arrogance and this attitude almost as top down revolution like, oh, you work with your hands, you don't have a doctorate from Harvard, your DOM and your stupid, right? And so but we saw this bubbling up in a variety of different ways. And for those of us that look at the stuff really closely and are worried about these trends, we said, this is not sustainable. You can't declare war on the people that actually make your country run and act as if there won't be a backlash against that, right? It's like a steep on serving me food serfs and servants. And we'd always make jokes about it, you know when Nancy Pelosi would be out in Napa Valley and all of her donor Friends were maskless, right? And every single person serving food outdoors were wearing masks, right? And we saw that whether Obama's birthday party in Martha's Vineyard where, you know, we had to kind of watch all the videos of people that had to wear masks or masks, but they were a sophisticated vaccinated crowd. And we saw that some people call double standards or hypocrisy, it's not. It's hierarchy. It's people in charge I think they're actually better than you. So hypocrisy is like if you actually believe the rule or you say it and you do something else, these are people that actually think they're at a different level of

"To ourselves but in some ways that is what it has become every couple of months the mercian vineyard association and publishes its own journal called the grapevine we've had two or three mentions in these pages and until the last one we were quite happy just to get any mention at all given the modest scale enterprise for the last publication. The editor had asked for any stories what she called as i recall natural disasters so obviously i sent her a reference to my blog about our misfortune with the burs and the eating via grapes. Well eighty percent of them. I'll return to the remaining twenty percent in a moment. In the most recent issue she referred to misfortune and recommended that people go to the blog for the whole story. She described it. As and i quote hilarious. I was happy with that as you know i do. Try and write in an amusing fashion if possible. It was only as bribes through the rest of the jail and found a report from our nearish neighbor. That in the words of the song. The smile dropped away from my face. There was a few pages later. A report of how successful they had been with that crop and their winemaking and not to beat about the bush. It pissed me off. Sheldon florida was everywhere. They had set this small vineyard up at the same time as us. So comparisons were inevitable. It felt like. I certainly saw her role in the world of english. Vineyards to be the source of fun for others right from the first training. Course i have a went on about setting up a new venue. On and i described the of his own the cost the location and ambitions of avignon and people laughed and suddenly. They felt a whole lot better about their own uv in yards. I suppose the rotting was on the wool. Then the signs were that we were bordering on the freaks of yorkshire vineyard world. Now you may think that the man who sets out to be amusing in his writing would welcome any kind of fame and be pleased that he was making. The people. Smile now misfortune. But it didn't feel like that. Just this moment on sunday our small group of vine grows winemakers meet including the full mentioned colleague. And i have no doubt that all the vigna people will bring examples of their wines recently made which raises an interesting issue. We did make some wine after the greatest we have left. But as i've written elsewhere we had to pick the grades before they were ready. Oh we would have had no grapes atole. So i know the wine i made. It's likely to be unimpressive. The fact that we made only red wine when most sensible people made white was an added disadvantage when we already had enough in the negative column. I'm now going to stop writing this blog. And go into the other room where we have stored our wine along with a kit wine and the orange wine that i referenced in elliott blogs by the time i write my next woods i will know. Just how much of a laughing stock i am about to become. My wife has suggested already peeling the label off a supermarket bottles. Deceive fellow winemakers bataille vetoed this idea so far at least i'm now going to get the wind an hour or two later. I'm back do you want to know the good news about news. Let's get the bad things out of the way. The wine made from grapes. Alone tasted crap or to be more precise. It tastes exactly like what it is. Wine made from. Grapes put when they were not ripe. For reasons. i've already explained the orange wine when tasted it alone. Israel than ice although rather like spirit and slightly petulant sparkly. The melo is fine as kit wines. Go on the site of spaghetti. Bowl organized would be perfectly acceptable. But of course neither res wines. We made to stand independently. They were created to enable us to make a drinkable blend from grapes. So the good news when blended approximately and i mean approximately one third of each. It tasted not too shabby tool question. Entrusting middle number not exactly like normal wine but an interesting version of something similar unto vertu. Our ambitions all those months ago. We always knew that trying to produce red wine that would suit the tastes of people that could buy decent butler chilean for about two five. And it's never gonna work now that we intend to sell our end but if we did it would clearly need a usb unique selling point. And that that missus soma half's nickname for my wife and myself tasted on physiologist. I'm definitely that all that remains now is to decide whether we have the courage to take a bottle of our blend blending. Wine is on honorable business. In the big wide world of winemaking to be subject to the scrutiny of his on sunday. I doubt we will. I'll let you know so early sunday morning. I blended and bottled three versions of our wine. Our writing covers the thirds. Shen the fifty fifty our wine in the merlo and two-fifths hours to fish smell on one fifth orange cooped and label them only with playing labels. We don't have a proper label as yet put them in a box. Slow to them in the land rover and took them to yorkshire wine. Meeting is pleasant meeting some interesting thoughts about how wind breaks increase the effects of frost generally chatty and even fun. We'll showed where we were up to in very different ways yes A neighbor did bring out his ones and unfortunately they were pretty good which leaves us with our wines. Did we have the courage to expose our efforts before this quite learners and certainly experienced group following the weight neighbor and say i stayed county. Been your retirement. Project goes on just getting new goods issues advantage. The vineyard is written and recorded by peter galvin produced an edited by pw osama house. She is production. Building the Next Napa Valley In the HIMALAYAS With Wine Expert Michael Juergens

"Lot of people have dreams like i have dreams. Kate has dreams. People listening to this podcast. They have dreams. But there's a difference between having dreams and actually feet on the grounds accomplishing dreams. So let's get specific like let's really talk this through. Because i think fire nation can maybe learn from the action that you're going to be taking about great ways. They can go forward accomplishing their dream. So how are you accomplishing your dream of building the next napa valley in the himalayas recognizing once again that had didn't start off as my dream to be involved. I just thought it would be super cool if they did it But then once. I once i became involved in realized i could be a piece of this and actually i think that bhutan is probably the last country in the world. That has the organic potential to grow. Amazing wine grapes. That doesn't already do it. Most places that can do it had been doing it for thousands of years and it was just to your point earlier. It's remote. And so you know marco polo and the roman army never got there with their handfuls grapes and so they ever planted in there. But what i'm doing is is we've taken a very collaborative approach with that. The country You know there's a. I don't know if you're familiar with with batons spent some time and and obviously the himalayas but they have a concept called gross domestic happiness instead of gross domestic product which is an amazing way to live. But they believe that. What's more important is the happiness of their citizens rather than any arbitrary economic success and so they have different pillars that that guide the gross domestic happiness for us. What we did is. We didn't approach the wine industry as like. Hey here's a way to make a few bucks it was. Here's a way that we think that this mashes extremely well with what you're trying to do with gross national happiness. And and then we went around and we got buy in from all of the various ministries of the government. You know that would have a say in this. The ministry of agriculture the ministry of economic affairs and so so on and so forth so we started with that then. Obviously you know. There's a enormous amount of logistics to try to get grapes up to the himalayas in vineyard plant. And but were. We've planted eight vineyard so far were up to about. We've got a hundred acres or so in total vineyard land but only about fifty acres are planted where we're still trying to experiment and see what's going to work there because no one knows it's never been done before and so you know back to your tactical what do you do. Well you do as much research as you can but eventually you just gotta grip it and rip it and and so we're doing that but we're doing it in a very mindful fail forward kind of way.

This Is the Question CNN's Dana Bash Should Have Asked Cori Bush

"So let's listen again to the To the moronic question that Dana bash of CNN asked. But let's listen to the response cut 20 to go. So I know you've seen that Republicans are pointing to the fact that you said you have your own security while almost in the same breath advocating for defunding the police. I do want to emphasize I understand you have security protection because you have received multiple death threats. But the clip that I just played as being used in attack ads against not not you, but not just you. But other Democrats. So Could those comments end up being Harmful to your fellow Democrats. Politically speaking, no, stop there, So it's all about politics to CNN and Dana Bash. She doesn't demonstrate a scintilla. Compassion for the people who are being slaughtered in in these communities, not a scintilla. She's all about Washington, D. C. What goes on in their little political bubble. She would have been thrilled if she could have been invited The masses vineyard and all the rest. Like the rest of her ilk. This is not a serious journalists. Here's the question. For Cori Bush. You understand that your ideology is resulting in the death. Of scores of individuals. In fact, thousands of individuals And I'm talking about black on black crime. Do you understand that if you do not have police People get brutalized. They get raped. They get murdered. They get maimed. Do you understand this? That there are evil people, regardless of race. And that you're doing people No good in the inner city. Do you understand that? That's the question.

"It's too bad. The media The Democrat Party. Do not take these Viruses and these variants seriously, it really is. They have no consistent message. We have mayors and governors Democrat to violate their own rules. We have Barack Obama throwing a swanky party 700 people. Math is Vineyard because he happens to turned 60 years old. He's not going to pass on that now. Other major events have been shut down over the course the last 18 months, but not Obama's party. We can't miss that. That's a big deal. We have Marxist riders and looters. Arsonists. They're not required to be masked. So there's a lot exceptions that a mask rule and the biggest exception, of course, illegal aliens. "That's the issue I have with these folks. You can't have it both ways. So you have Barack Obama, former president. Again there Cy on this God of the liberal lefties, having the 60th birthday party in his mother's Vineyard mansion, 500 people and he puts us in a bad spot. Because again, we're like, Wait. You're one of these liberals agreeing with this whole covid Delta Varian hysteria. We're all going to die. Everybody stay in your house locked down and put a face mask on. Don't walk out of your front door. So what do we do? Do we tell him Obama? You should cancel it, too, because then we play into the hysteria. That's what these liberals do to us. "That goes makes. It reminded me of an idea. I had a while ago about how wine is made in turkey and georgia. I think it was on the other way. Round the observer reviewed what they call orange wines reviewed the end product very favorably. Assuming you like a taste of origin. Your wine set me thinking if our wine. If and when made a little thin lacking in fruit than we might legitimately are different kinds of i wrote down at the time orange pips spice cherries notes. Pez in this way. I would be distinctive. I do realize that the would distinctive can mean many things good and bad but still it was an idea and he came back to me after the first period of thinking. Should we wasted our time be creative. I thought i even thought about making the one in amphorae buried in the ground. As i remember they did enjoy. You visited there until i looked at the price and also contemplated how big the vessel laws and how small our amount of grape juice. So maybe not this finally and again trying for the good news front. I started checking on the internet from local. That is what was the lowest sugar level. They would recommend picking rondo again reasonably encouraging the figure of seventeen on the brick scale was mentioned and this is significantly below the twenty four point five to be exact suggested by a us. Jim not that far off the figure of nearly fifteen some of aggravates registering and we had another three or four weeks if the weather stayed good before we needed to pick them so far now. Nearly the end of september the weather even up at the top end of nitto has been kind to us a relative term. You understand on the less good front. We have hens and chickens. If you were thinking as a non buying grow you might say oh. That's an ice. He's taking up keeping livestock because he's grapes on growing. If you are fine row you will know that. I'm talking about great variability in size and rhyming. The grades i big ones. Little ones in abundance does not help picking on the winemaking process toll. It's not impossible but it probably does me picking out all the on rhyme small graves before trying to make wine with what's left so that's not great but hopefully not insuperable if that his word the other thing we've done this month is to get the soil analyzed again at fourteen pounds of sample and sake samples. This is not something to be undertaken. Likely i decided to do it. Because some of the leaves were showing some classic signs of mineral deficiency. We doing okay. On the potassium phosphorus and magnesium front but there are important elements work here again more reading on the internet about what might be happening and sites talking about the problem with the carbon nitrogen bonds back to our first comprehensive soil analysis to read about the need for boron and zinc application saw quite anxiety provoking and is probably not the right time of year to be applying any additional chemicals easy to put on the backburner until next year. Assuming there isn't actually so there. We have it. September progress report about bits. You'll never make any wine quite a bit by bit and your soil needs treating and the good bit says well while we're keeping on with the dream we have three or four weeks for the weather to remain good and our grapes to ripen at hence for us to make some wine of some sort retirement so many opportunities to trusting the vineyard written and recorded by peter galvin produced and edited by w.

"Sixty. We really do grapes new july. Two thousand fourteen so on my ongoing vine related retirement adventures. The first thing to say right up front. I've been talking rubbish while this might come as no surprise to you. It has to me simply. Because i was absolutely convinced that this was our third year of the vignon. And i've been telling everybody yes. This is our third year so we might get some grapes this year. It turns out that this is only our second year even writing it now. I don't believe it. So firmly fixed in my head was the idea that we're into our third year and has taken mississippi houses record of the vineyard early days and then confirmation in my own daughter diaries to give indisputable proof that what cima half still it was in fact true yes. I thought that was three years at gumbo very quickly but to be honest the whole of fill phil ignace so. This was no guide. I was going to ride this july blog about fight that we had finally had what seemed to be grapes. I got distracted by three two year debate but now back to the original theme after a few false starts with us thinking. The buds were grapes. I think whisper that we do now have actual gripes small but beautifully formed. These are the rondo vines. The technically minded. I think our last year that we had sixteen grapes and all in the tubes but this year the second year of the vignon. We've got lots to any account. My euphoria and i don't think that is too strong. A word in the context was only slightly down but when we discovered that some grapes while hiding in the tubes admittedly in the most exposed rover the vines. These gripes will consider bigger huge in fight. Compared with those out of the tubes. He'll have to take my word for it so often the case with life my emotions were mixed on one hand. These grapes demonstrated to me. At least we have healthy plants capable of producing good gripes on the other hand on less good such grapes only materialize if the grape stay in the tube in some ways it feels no better than growing up vines in poly tunnels the only achievement here would be keeping such tunnels from disappearing down the dale transported by strong winds. I have mentioned the wind. I think these grapes had tanked one look and decided thanks. We'll just stay here. It's nice and cozy so yes mixed feelings. Finally let me tell you about my winery. In my long term plan for the venue when i began to realize we might actually have some gripes. Tonight one with. I started to think about suitable winery buildings. You can't make a world class wine in your garden. Shed you'll be pleased to know that high of put in motion. Such friends have a winery. I have chosen my reasonably priced building a mass historian itself. It costs seven hundred and forty seven pounds whereas for a short period of madness. I was contemplating paying five. Thousand lots of money for venture still with. I calculate only a fifty fifty chance of success. It all happened fifty thousand version because lofthouse with vinny awed is located is very small village and people in the village know what other people in the village are up to so when one of my neighbors down in the valley built himself a handsome shirt. I wanted to my other neighbor. You also been the venue where he had got it from. Hearing i was interested in his shed remind this job calls me up and tells me he built it himself from timber from the local grindley mill. I thought was great until he told me that. The timber alone had cost him. Four thousand pounds this without his labor. Although i would not require a shed morehouse extension. Really this big. I could see with him building it for me which he offered to do. Even with my help figure approaching five thousand pounds for a short moment. I was tempted. It was a very fine shed but then commonsense to cold. I still might have no grapes suitable to make wine with so having a bloody big shot not to wine who seem a little extravagant hence my shed off the lot woodland's timber. I went to view it on the lot. Is it my imagination. Or was this won't cleaning or is that me and the good news is that i asked my neighbor to clear a space to put down concrete base ready for my shed which i will order as soon as my neighbor tells me the basis ready. He has a digger. He's a good man to know. I still feel a little foolish if we don't get any gripes but hey nothing ventured etc as my neighbor with the big shot said. Sometimes you have to take a gamble. Retirement seems like a perfect time to take a gamble not is time doing. please keep on growing. Thank you for listening to this episode of the vineyard years. "Chatree left the should february two thousand and fourteen. I suppose it. Say something about our ambitions for our vineyard. When i tell you that the only building to the vineyard concept so far is shared. This was last winter. This is not in any way to denigrate. My shed hinted that elsewhere person these shadow something similar either virtual or actual in my case mind is admittedly a rather flimsy shed. Tony costs three hundred pounds. Not like some house of the title which is a solid thing showed look nice and pert on the lot. The same house. Rest snugly in the back garden protected and safe online the shed not only. Is it a bit on the light. So but being in the vineyard on as you will know from previous vineyard blogs is todd exposed in the blog. That was a photograph of what the sheds luke like when i placed on the land. I love mississippi. He painfully skills to protect the shed against elements. Little it it now when it left being q. what a life. It was heading for probably thought he was going to be. Somebody's potting shed maybe with a capital and mugs and a neat suburban guard with some old guy listening to radio for rum. I place my shed. The one i had always wanted. Contrary to the sensible advice of my foam a neighbor at the bottom of the vineyard. He said i needed to place it behind the bomb where it would be protected but i knew better of course. What did he know that up into detail. He only lived in foam there for forty plus years so placed the shed where i thought it looks nice where the view was best so that when i sat in my writing cabin composing great works and imagining avenue. In years ago. I would be able to stay idly out of the window without any need for explanation. So the idea is a writing. Cabin was its initial use. I mean just look you can see right down. The valley and i have a telescope for that purpose. I have bolted chair. Cut down a found table. Put one of my favorite books on that table and plan. Were to hang my maps of the world. I also bought a rod and natty kabul radio from leeds art gallery show up. I thought it very cool but not as cool as it was about to be bought. The radio i listen to radio four while wiling away the animals in my very own shed and then last winter the snow cave. The snow covered the shed way down by the snow the shad assumed a boy or trapeze him. Searching might longo knowledge of joe mature here kind of shape the perspex windows shattered the roof and part of the shad flew off. I was found in the next failed. Cozy writing cabin place to plant. Vineyards strategies did not look so flash. I felt a little foolish. Ask him asking my neighbor if he would reconstruct my potential winemaking in house but my neighbor kindly did reconstructed in the rest of the venue. The plastic tubes very in the parents so just sticking out of the snow and some sticking out a tool but where the snow had drifted completely. Buried them still live. Incidentally as i've said all this happened about this time last we had a couple of worrying months. Oh wondering what is late. Blizzard might have done to our vines. This winter was at the end. Of every i some very wet one. You'll recall so they haven't had the best out. There is book on. We go which is a bit more than the radio did. It was buried under several feet of snow in the wreckage. Shed what had seemed like a cool thing to put in the shed ten national road foolish a more than a little misshapen. I tried to open it out of it restore it to its original pristine condition. It doesn't look too bad when photographed can tell you. I was pretty chastened. Lives a bit crackly. But then he always was bit on the fragile side. Sound wise even when unblemished by several feet of snow. So we've given it a more. Domesticated homework can be more like the radio. It wanted to be like the neon itself. The radio does live on. We await the coming of a second spring to see how many of our vines have survived. The things you do in retirement. Thank you for listening to this episode of the lake. venue ideas. "Chapter ten a night out the hotel but no opera january two thousand and fourteen. You might say this was an historic meaty. The first one was time anyway. A powerful force. Yorkshire vintners gathered together to plan our strategy for world domination. Quite in a number of ways. First problem was me. The thing is that there is a part of my soul. That does not believe. I do not believe i am not the believer i do not in my heart of hearts believe that we will ever get grapes or ever make our own wine which is kind of okay will always hold. The project has experimental but it makes meeting with yorkshire vietna- colleagues slightly oakwood a bit of experience. In fact lies have been so changed in the last few months retirement. "Chapter nine review of the year. Two thousand thirty in the last block of this year. I thought i would ride quick summary of this year for us and fewer bits and bobs. It's been a year off in work in half in retirement. Vignon was always designed as a retirement project. So was going well in that planning sense finish. This is vinnie blogs by referring to the wind society news. I've being a member of the wine society for about thirty is and although i spread my wine buying around for moldy majestic local wine shops accenture still by on a semi regular basis from the society. They haven't tended to sell much from english. Vineyards in the past. This is changing the front page of the december new sheet society news has the headlines two thousand and thirteen looking. Good for you cave-in yards. They feel the love. The picture of a need serene even vignon review in the downs. I'll have to say that any resemblance to avenue all these purely coincidental. The weather is predictably. The main focus of the article quote warm temperatures continued well into october. The long winter of two thousand and twelve thousand thirteen was actually a benefit to the vines as it delayed but bus unless the period we were at risk from ross said molly arabas of retrea half for when may arrived without any side of a boat. I began to fit worst. Those light on this council year little face. The article concludes only know. Two thousand and thirteen looks very promising for english wine. And we look forward to tasting the first of these when they arrive next summer and finally slightly damning with faint praise. We know the obvious has been excellent promising. Look forward to tasting suggests that the still possibility of english winters screwing the quality of the one in the winemaking process. The maybe that's just me. Just my paranoia on. That's not something ruse to worry about. Just yet we have had a good year in our own modest wi with the good weather even the dial where we are. Vines have grown. Well as i wrote earlier we have had our own harvest humble but if large oak trees grow from tiny echoes. While who knows what you'll be dead before then yep vines have grown well. We've lost a few along the way and as we brace ourselves for yet storm of the century we hope for the best on are exposed side through this coming winter in my next blog i will publish a couple of photos of the snow. We had last year on the affected On my shed. We went up to the vigna both spayed and more plastic ties. The action talks in some the show that in the woods garrison kada it doesn't sell it. You probably don't need it. I have the vague intention of levelling out. Some of the newly ploughed rafer nexias additional planting on tying mccain's but so bloody cold. We went inside litter. Read the papers. The pups were happy enough to rise around outside. When i did venture out. I went to the outside building under the bits of toddy. Somali thing to do when it's cold outside in the process of tidying-up are found hundreds and hundreds of plastic ties. The must have come with the canes. As i said before i don't remember ordering them but though they were laughing at the wasted money. We don't like wasting money and yorkshire. That i had swarmed on buying new ties when i had literally hundreds in my house as a token gesture are two of them. Just the thousand to go before retiring inside. Finally i'd like to know that my name has been cemented in the dial one of the residents foamy the other day to ask if i will be prepared to organize a wine tasting. Apparently my farmer neighbor the one who helps me. I recommend to as a wine expert to shop who wanted to organize a wine tasting evening in february when quote it's a bit miserable appear of drunk plenty of one in my time but never been regarded as an expert capable planning out wine tasting evening. "Chapter eight ties of retirement. December two thousand and thirteen. Can there be very much to write about the venue that this time of year if we were proper vignon i won't the ad grapes. I'd probably be writing about our wine-making exploits. But we don't and i'm not. I could write one about my blog being publicity grapevine. The magazine the mvp. I mentioned last time in this series of video blogs that was nice. But it's not the topic sufficient for a blog instead. I thought i'd write an interesting blog about the as it turns out not so simple. Active keeping the canes upright for the uninitiated they need to be vertically position as canes usually do an attached to the top strand of the wire that simple purpose being to keep the vine tubes of bright and maybe give the vine a bit of support. So how can a simple task proof so complicated or is it me i. Will you string ordinary commoner gallatin godden twine to tile by the way tying up full hundred canes surprisingly tiring but never mind because it finished this work. Well the problem is and i may have mentioned this before we have wind. Not personally the vignon has a win. This puts pressure on the cain and aided by the sale effect of the to pressure on the string then begins to loosen and as a bonus eventually robbed as soon as this happens. The cane and of course the fine is that the increasing messy of the wind and then the inevitable homes. They are blown. Flat won't win even for us. I'm writing this now. Because last week we went up to avignon after the worst storm in sixty is some such statistic out places about at the best of times. Imagine what we would find after this. I mean what would we find. What would left of our project. We were greeted by sorry sight. Not as bad as we had feared but about enough gordon number of canes and hence vines themselves. we're lying flat and who could blame them. I had given the unequal struggle. I wondered what variety fine if any grows flat to the ground. I wonder if jancis robinson this and extremely expensive will wind gripes which. I was both for christmas last year. Incidentally this storm on its effects helped me to decide about pruning. I'm told by my knowledgeable colleagues that you can prove anytime from november to february. I wasn't sure when in this window to prune. Now it's clear that the few shoes a plant pass even if attached to the result of wire the less susceptible to wind damage. So at the time of retying i was also pruning thought. You would like to know digress. So when we planted we started with god and twine which should be fine but actually ross expands and becomes useless. We went onto bela twine. Which is bright color. Go to body you decide but the complaint book to tie up tightly coats into your hands on didn't seem any more effective given the pain of tying then we went plastic accidentally really these particular ties with the canes because i didn't buy them and haven't really noticed them and found him lying around in the outhouse saw use them on. This was before the great stole. Hope i'm not boring. You could call this an interesting experiment with the plastic ties. Be more resolute than the strain. The answer was yes and no summit state of ryan but there were others that had succumbed and they were not to mix words equally as flat as a string tied. Cain a word of advice. Don't try and secure the plastic ties. To the cain the wi without removing any old string. Because if you don't you can't pull it tight tied of and hence the aforementioned problem with horizontality. This was my rationale for the plastic ties. Partial failure rate. I put the tie over the rothen. String mature. I'm not boring. You but i didn't know this fool. The last visit in high hopes of the plastic ties filed by the optimism. My boom multi from homebase. A ni- were different. They had nobly this surprisingly expensive. That's homebase isn't it. Took a bit of working out. But when i have. They seemed altogether mo- promising until i pulled so tight. This is tying the cain to the wind. Nothing to do with it cell. Do not strangle your vines. That's another tip. I pull it so tight. That one snapped. This made be worry all over again on. The thing is the great majority of lines are still string attached on. We'll need replacing with. I think plastic. But we'll kind. That's the question who would have thought it here. "Chapter 7 just one of the gang last November 2013 For some people retirement is about joining things or the people in groups. That is In about June of last year. We joined the mercy in Vineyard Association the MVA a regional section of the United Kingdom Vineyards association with the UK VA and currently the one that includes Yorkshire. Ignoring the Marxist line. I wouldn't want to belong to any club. That would have me as a member we went ahead. We were slightly surprised that the writers join. We felt anything but bona fide a Vineyard owners, but here we were we even went to a meeting in Walsall of all places in a walk-in restaurant on Sunday lunch time. We felt quite Brave as well as fraudulent. As I've written elsewhere. I'm not really a joiner. Not the longer. And there were more reasons than is usually the case not to go to the meeting first. It was quite a long way away. Although closer than most of the meetings of the MVA same thing again would we really feel a part of the whole Enterprise? Well to preempt the outcome. The answer sadly was know the people were pleasant and welcoming enough money, but these grows were established had thousands of vines and were doing this professionally as far as we could make out inevitably the question how many Vines have you got came up? It's the equivalent to what your handicap at a golf club when we said four hundred people were polite some manageable number one said without any hint of being patronising. You knew you weren't going to be best friends. We were bounces likely to ask these people for advice as I would be to ask Eric Clapton for advice about how to play the blues. It felt not right, even though we did have our photos off for the next magazine. So we haven't been to any more meetings but we as members do get both the great pressure and all of the UK VA and the Grapevine magazine of the MVA. It is rumored that one of my blogs will appear in the next edition of the latter. I'm flattered and hopeful that it might take a few more people to my blog. They're interesting articles in the latest issues of both magazines. For example growing vines in trenches in Scotland in the Grapevine and felt like he might have some relatives for us climate-wise in the great press an article entitled the effects of Vine spacing interesting again to us because I have planted our Vines closer together than what's generally recommended simply because I thought they might protect each other from the wind. Of course the closeness might also prohibit the sons access and hence ripening. Another article that seven deadly sins of wine marketing need not concern as for a couple of years and maybe never most important of all four reasons. I've come to the August issues of both the above had the results of English and Welsh wine of the Year competition. Now, you may think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves thinking about winning Awards and you'd be right off my interest was to see how far north you could be and win a prize to be brutally honest not very far workship Wolverhampton and not what I or anybody else would call Northern renishaw in Derbyshire is getting closer. But we visited this vineyard and vines are well protected by Stone or brick. I can't remember which in other words not at all like a setup. Most encouraging price for us was Riedel Vineyards, which is exactly where it says it is we bought our Vines from Stuart Smith at Rydell and he's been very helpful to walk ins. So it takes very little effort to say congratulations to Stewart and Elizabeth and they have any art is affected by wind and they got a highly commended for their Rondo, which is a red wine, So that's a double plus so we haven't rushed off and joined the model-making club or a hiking Society or even a book reading club. We've joined the MVA from a distance and there is the beginning of a Yorkshire Association. So who knows in the meantime, we'll keep our fingers crossed that most of our Vines survive whatever this coming winter has lined up for us in the next couple of frogs are right about.

"Chapter six and retirement we have grapes October 2013. Twenty one of them on three Vines. Okay, three out of four hundred isn't a lot but we hadn't expected any so Alan another member of our fledgling Joachim in your Association and a retired person like me had grapes on his Vines and we had planted at the same time, but although his Vineyard is near his two hours their location and everything else could not be more different. So quite honestly, we didn't think his group set any precedent for hours that didn't stop me being deeply deeply envious. So if I were so inclined I could be deeply envious of his set up. Generally. It's so neat metal post straight rows thought ground. Neatly cut grass. No weeds totally strung proper wire, everything looks so immaculate and then we looked at hours and it just made me Laughs we have none of the above joke and cheese doesn't even begin to cover it. But enough of this Envy business. The only reason we realized we had grapes too long because we had to lift and in some cases took with a Stanley knife the tubes in order to strip the leaves in the tubes last year. We hadn't done this and the leaves had turned off early and they were starting to infect the vines with a kind of fungus. This was annoying as the one thing. We thought the inordinate amount of wind we have bought as was freedom from various mildews. But here it was and it was due to our carelessness. So this year we wanted to make sure we removed all the leaves in the tubes a daunting task and one for which we often listed daughter and partner. Of course, there were the dogs to look after here or even especially here. So only three of us could work at the same time, but that's another story. So it was in the removal of the tubes one way or another revealed The Grapes all on the Rondo variety so black grapes and have a decent size, which was nice because it meant we took better photograph. I suppose technically you wish you remove them at an earlier stage. A couple of them are already started to go mouldy. Even this cheered me because I thought hmm Spade lace certainly the vines on which we found the ground Square by any means the most vigorous. So maybe it was as is often the case within half leaves or you can have rude. Anyway, we didn't see them until now. I'm find him at this point, Well Kelly exciting. I'd already decided that we could buy another fifty or even a hundred can't decide which a hundred would bring our total 2500 which would be enough perhaps you could make 1000 bottles with this study boy 21 grapes does not a vintage make but I've asked my Farmer to play a bit more of our field and get the necessary post and want to setup more rows let you know how that goes. But at this stage I'm planning on 57th belong. We could make sparkling rose a and fifty Pinot Noir which is completely impractical but hey, we've got grapes. Haven't we and I love P No Fear Factor thing we discovered that we didn't realize we've got a part from Nettles that is responding to whatever I'm doing to the soil is rats. Well one dead one without a head. Anyway, my daughter who you will remember it is helping his family. She is a city girl thru-and-thru. She was unimpressed. In fact, she ran around screaming dead dead rat dead rat excetera followed by his got no head. He's got no head and so on she already found a rabbit skeleton and this is required therapy. This was worse. It just seemed to me that my concept of a Wildlife Park which we could fall back on if the vineyard concept didn't fly was enhanced by this discovery. That's rabbits moles mice Birds shoot possibly dear and now dogs out of course and as a bonus dead rats who says we're not blessed by God's incredible bounty. You get the occasional glue to my daughters like a subway fare in the country by her attitude to working on the vines. I have provided her with a handful of plastic ties and told her to use them to secure the vines to the horizontal wire. String had proved completely bloody useless in tying the canes to the wire it rots within an hour of being tied are particularly useless at tying the dog to the top of the water and keeping the said cane upright the wind sees it as a challenge to blow the Cannes and hence the vines horizontal and frankly the string after a very short time wage either complicit or at least neutral in this event. Do do what you like. I'm not bothered they don't pay me enough back to the daughter. That's when you want more I said the tires that is after quite a long time. I wonder why she wasn't asking for more. She said she wasn't using them on all the Vines only and I found out on the chosen ones when I made the mistake of questioning her logic, she replied that the ties which admittedly are non-reusable and therefore quite offensive says Yorkshire after all we're not to be used lightly with any of mine only her chosen ones. She addressed the chosen ones with such God knows how this made the rest of them field. Hm. Her partner was born and brought up in and now extinct Melanie Village and played rugby league to a good standard home. So he's considered more robust. Thanks be to God. He finished off when the rest of us for a variety of reasons some good some not had lost interest. So there we have it country meet City nature Red Cross reference to grapes red in tooth and Claw and we have grapes. Thank you for listening to this episode of The Vineyard years. "Chapter five the Harvest but not ours October 2013 again, they do it because they love me said Chris off the owner of the vineyard. This is in response to my question about whether he paid his great because about twenty or so of them are reckoned and not a Polish import inside. But of course, they wouldn't be doing it for free. Chris had remarked to me in the past that it was difficult to get dedicated Pickers. They come for an hour. He said then look at their watches and say good Lord is that the time but no sign of that here dedication and hard work with a key wage. Its mind you as these workers were all volunteers. No sign of the paid Workforce referred to in the guardian a few weeks ago. According to the article Vin. You'll need more workers than Farms seventy workers to the two required when the same land was Farm according to the owner of rough in a Vineyard in Sussex all forms of it. Plenty of job opportunities Sarah driver wife of the owner Mark said if you want a job then learn a little bit about viticulture at the moment. We can't find the kind of people that we need dog sounded a bit like Chris is Original Point. The whole experience was slightly surreal. This was the first time I'd ever been a great picker and I imagined that when I did it would be in an exotic location, France Italy southern hemisphere somewhere, but not North Yorkshire, but here we were off and on a beautiful day at the beginning of October it all had a dream-like quality. Vineyard was huge maybe nightmare would be closer off the way and let the education begin. Chris told me he had 10,000 Vines of which he reckoned about 9,000 needed picking for big days of picking of which this was the first page. Chris reckon would be needed to get this bumper would have to be the word bumper Harvest gathered in I've been blogging about what a good year. It has been for English Vineyards wage was approved in all its rampant fecundity. Wow, a bit like my writing. So as I say, I'm not in our own Vineyard another wage years God willing and this could be me after 3 and 1/2 hours of non-stop snipping. I'd never been more glad that I had four hundred Vines so far rather than the 10,000 he thought I was in somebody else's Vineyard because a Chris has been helpful to me in.

"Dale if Vines get out in hats, they surely would be wearing them now. Most of the vines are stretched for self-protection along the wire at this stage. They should be tied vertically to the bamboo canes I up. It mostly given up on this plan Gone With the Flow so to speak and right now there's plenty of that. What the hell are we doing here? You can hear them talking among themselves didn't sign up for this. Problem is in windy conditions. And as I've said before we have plenty of that the fact that the vines now have leaves some until now regarded as encouragingly large plus the sale light quality of the plastic tubes added to the fact that the string that attaches the cane to the top wire rots remarkably quickly leaving the cane all through free to walk with the wind was Charming phrase Carlin describes. What's happening right now? All this means is that a Vineyard definitely is left-leaning and right now they look closer to leaving than leaning. We had come up to the vineyard with the hope of belatedly spraying some Miracle Grow on to the leaves. We're doing this because yesterday's meeting are more experienced colleagues told us off. That's what we needed to do. We needed to feed them previously. We use chicken menu pellets sharp intake of breath. When we mention this to colleagues wage want to do that too much nitrogen makes the grass grow. They got that right? I'll tell you more of this in my next blog for this one. Let's stick with a continual exposition of our Madness Visa Vie the wind. When do you remember from previous blog being the enemy of vines? I will just say yesterday's meeting that I had a very helpful conversation with here in about windbreaks and these surely will come but they're not here yet. We spend what feels like a fruitless couple of hours trying to persuade the bamboo canes and laughably frail. They look now to assume a mildly vertical stance and then retire. The totally tedious test good to see I have not lost my alliterative powers. It's not easy because at times we can hardly stand in the biggest guests, but we sticky doubt. If we carried on with the spraying plan, the Miracle-Gro would have landed in the next day or if it ever landed in this country at all Holland looks promising. Does Holland need any Miracle Grow? I wonder All this and it's only the first of September laugh. I nearly went to Bradford as they said in these parts. Although I'm not quite sure why. We should never have let ourselves feel optimistic, but we call the Inn at our local dish. Excellent wine shop in Maxim call Cox and cases and they took the vineyard regularly when delivery and said nice things about how the vines were developing. A kind word helps when you're insane not even gone round to my Farmer neighbor to talk to him about extending the vineyard more plowing more posts and wire that song thing fortunately. He was out this was before we got to the vineyard. Now. I look at the VIN yard wind-swept Prairie with our Vines trying their best choice emulate the classic rolling Tumbleweed and think of yesterday's visit to the wonderfully need protected well-tended competition in inverted commas home and I feel a small tear form know that's the wind again. And I haven't even mentioned the moles rabbits deer allegedly sheep. Also, possibly the enemy of vines and that's also not to mention that this allows metals and graphs Etc. They will feature in a future blog. Now we know why the last owner sold is this land. It's definitely challenging, but I already have my mission statement for our label. It is from adversity quality. Brilliant, I can taste it now. And optimistic note. I turned my eyes from the vineyard and go back to reading the papers. Boy, I bet you.

"We actually began planting this way out in March 2012. That was when we put in the post the wires and of course the vines but any notes mrs. Summer House made at the time were destroyed. It is still believe it or not. So these notes records and podcasts actually began in 2013. So apologies for any confusion that this might have caused. The Vineyard Years A Tale of insanity in the Yorkshire Dales by Peter Galvan chapter 2 Yes, we are planting Vines know they probably won't grow. Yes. We are mad. August 2013 Again, I have to start this chapter by admitting that I had no intention of publishing it right now, but then I read an article in the guardian. It's only one week after the article wage prompted my last blog about how wonderful was in the world of English wine-growing and this article one week later is about how bad things are off in the world of French Vine growing. It was headlined. Bordeaux wines are decimated by nine minutes of hail. Went on to say week dog field surveyed. What was left of his Vineyard? Row upon row of skeletal Vines bereft of foliage and fruit, they're broken branches hanging limp. It is a catastrophe. Everything has gone the leaves the gibes everything. It's happened so quickly. Yes, welcome in nine minutes of hail. He said he blinked back the tears. No, I'm not gloating. I only ever do this when we meet the French at rugby and it was a French have that Latin temperament that has been accused of being dramatic, but my heart the heart of old brother Vine grower when right out to him.
