"Burlingame San Bruno Belmont lost Gallows, too, and San Jose won on basketball one on Meridian, Walnut Creek in Danville, Minardi's quite simply the best. Go, go. No, really backfired up bringing it all excited. This is King NPR extra innings with will last sponsor violin. Are these markets quite simply the best. Listen on your Google home Smart speaker by saying play KNBR. All right. Welcome back to extra innings. A giant's losing in San Diego for the second night in a row. 62 to 6 run six sets one air for San Diego, two runs five hits. No errors for the Giants. That's two nights in a row. They've scored two runs on five hits, and that's just not making it to win a game. And they've lost two straight on Lee their second back to back losses twice this year. So tomorrow's a big game and you call it of a is that a must win. I think it is. And you got your ace Kevin Gausman on the hill. We still don't know what probable picture the San Diego Padres. They're throwing out there, but they're definitely playing better baseball and the Giants need to put some zeroes on the board defensively early and score some runs, get some early runs and And get these starting pitchers a little confidence to go deep into games. They're pitching their tails off. Starting pitching is doing outstanding home run balls from the Giants 33rd home run today. Du Bon hit it. He is first for the year, but that's the 33rd home run. The Giants have played it. They've only made seven errors in 27 games. The defense is playing well. Offense needs to get some timely hitting, and we're just not seeing that ate away can be our if you want to get the phone lines, let's go to Craig and beautiful Arizona. How you doing tonight? Crack Boy, it's beautiful, little overcast. What's the high down there now is it isn't a night still? Yeah, Craig is it is a pretty hot down. Phoenixes like 106, and we're like 80. Yeah, well, you're on pace of rare and beautiful northern Arizona. Yeah, that's beautiful Up there in the mountains. It's nice and cool. What do you think of the game tonight, Craig? Well, what's up with this? 28 strike out? I'd like to ask the Giants about that one. Because let me tell you in the 7th and 8th inning, I was scratching my head six up, six down on six. K's by Adams and put gone and there weren't even there would even good swings and nose. So they need to start making better contact. Contact. Yeah, no contact. That's the problem. But it brought back bad memories for me because When I was 18. I couldn't hit a curveball. So I was striking out a lot after being if you don't move up in the box, you didn't move up in a box and get it before dropped. I tried everything I could get. P. Wells, who stand tried to move up in the box back in the box, everything but I went from like a 3 20 hitter to like a 1 20 hitter. So they knew what to throw you. You didn't see a fastball after that, did you? I guess not. Hey. Well, listen, I've done some research on you and your first year and the big legs. You hit four home runs. No, I didn't. I wish I did. Really. I didn't hit a home run in the big leagues. The closest I got was a ball. I keep telling it over and over and hit a ball off Tom Seaver and My best one of my best friends in Ohio, who I kind of grew up with Eddie Milner went up over the wall and pulled it down. And he was running in from center field as I was rounding first base of the biggest smile on his face with the ball in his hand, and I was like you, Why don't you let it go? But that was that That was about it s O. No, I didn't hit a home run. I looked up your stats. I thought I saw four home runs you for maybe four R B. I cracked it before our very eyes. I was about it. Hit 1 29. I was I was fine. I bunted the ball. Fine. Let the National league I think in one year and sacrifice bunts, but I was there to get people out. I wasn't there, Tuz my bat. Yeah, And you brought up Tom Seaver. I got to work with saver Really? Where? NBC Sports and Vince Scully. I was in the booth with Vinnie and Tom 1989, you know, C s when the Giants beat the Cubs But we sure lost a lot of great Hall of Famers this past year. Just one after another. I hadn't Tom was one of them. Course He lives here. Napa and a Zawisza. Hurry up there and you know his health was this decreasing over the last few years, he didn't go to a lot of the Mets. Anniversaries and people were talking about it, and he just got it fell into a bad place it near a lot of guys, and they're all that That's that third tier of our life. We're seeing a lot of the Great Hall of Famers passing away. Third tier is a good way to put it. Seaver was just one of the guys I'd get in the NBC card, and I take him and Veni back too. The hotel and favorite. Say, Come on, get going. I gotta call my wife. See? Yeah. Shot to check in May be back. Yeah, That's right. Well, how about video? I mean, you had it had great video stores. He was he was it was great about. He was so nice to everybody. He he didn't care who it was. Didn't he never showboated. He never had that arrogance and him And that's one thing When you talk about a man like Vin Scully and how he prepared every day and how much work he did. Listen, He did those games by himself, just like John Miller doesn't Dave Fleming and pipe It's very difficult to do that day in and day out. He even read his own commercials. I mean, Vince Scali was one of a kind Well, thank you, Dave. I everybody and a very pleasant good afternoon to you..

He has no energy, my god, monotone and no way well, like guys in the world. Sure. He's a nice guy. Who else you hate that old Dodger announcer. What's his name? Vince Scali. You getting down on him too? Oh, my God. What about that guy that was born about 29 2021 years ago, though? I don't know. What's his name? Jesus. How about that guy? No, I'm sure Aaron is a great That's obviously a phenomenal football player. But he's not good at hosting. He's very stiff. He's very monotone. It was that, but that's a stiff host. Job. I mean, you know, Alex Trebek was also stiff. There needs to be a little mystery behind it. The cadence and the mystery There there, you can have low. I don't know if I'll say this. Probably everything have you know a lot of energy, but Plate kind of low. You do it occasionally. Thank you very much. But I don't watch jeopardy that often because just make me feel good about myself, right? Yeah. I can't answer any of them. Yeah, one myth that hopscotch. I'd watch that. What follows three? That's right. It's like I'd watch bowling for dollars. That made me feel good right when he misses 7 10 split off that guy. Yes, I'm pretty good at wheel of fortune, though. Are you? Really? Yeah. I don't like that either. Not good at that. You can't get the puzzles when they have, like all the letters in now, The only thing I like is price is right because I go around and look at prices and stuff, so you know prices. Yeah, Yeah, I like Rice. A Roni. And how much is rice? A Roni? Right now I I bought the other day was a dollar 89. Box rice running. Anybody know if he's right. Yeah, all right. Um, but I You know, I was gonna get that job. 84 cents. 84 cents. Well, I don't work for Donald Dollar 20 habit closures. He buys the expired ones. I use coupons, but I don't. I'm not a big game show that that's not true. I love family feud. You do? I love family feud right enough to think about anything. You just see these people trying to win 20 grand. They get so excited. I will say, though, that when they when they Whoever's on family feud, and they went a brand new car. If it's the family on the right as you look at the TV sets a family on stage left, so it's on your right. They have to walk by the other family to get in that car, right? Yeah, The other family just lost the car. And now they're going to get this these a holes walking by you screaming on getting in. What? You should have been your car? Yeah, they're getting in their face right with their big win. That's right. Yeah, they got 20 grand in a car. You got nothing, man Should he's got a dumb sister. That doesn't know what pop I eat. I did. Oh, my God. Gotta play that again, and I can't stop with that. It Zed it up for us belly. What is that? Well, it's see it's the family feud up in Canada. I believe right, right? The question was, what does Pop I eat for dinner? Yeah, well, she was so confident in her answer, and she would go. Will you put Popeye's favorite food? I think Popeye's favorite food it was it was on. That makes more sense. But it was It was the sudden death where there's only one answer. And this one question one answer. And so this young lady Was asked What's Popeye's favorite food and man, did she blow?.

"An NFC title games, you know, today sucks. Quite frankly, Today's an unfortunate day in the world of sports here in the United States of America. Because of your sports fan. You can't be a sports fan. I would I would venture to say if you're of a certain age, you have to be familiar. You are familiar. With one of the greatest baseball players, one of the greatest human beings, public figures I should say here in the United States of all time, and that man's name is Hank. Aren Henry Hank Aaron. Unfortunately, what we learned today this morning that he passed away at the age of 86. I'd be Ramesses to start off the show. And, yes, it will be heavy football, But I'd be Ramesses not to spend some time. Just acknowledging this man's passing and what he meant not only to the game of baseball, but what he meant to society, whether he was loved in society or in many segments throughout the course of his career, especially as he was pulling up on Babe Ruth. He was hated in society, and it didn't matter what was going on around him. He was an individual who carried himself with class someone who carried himself with grace. You know, someone like Hank Aaron is the epitome. Of black excellence for what he did for himself how he carried himself, regardless of how people felt about him, and then what he also did for the community. Even when the community did not love him back. And so, Hank, our and mostly known yes, for you know, jumping ahead of You know Babe Ruth all time home runs going ahead and and and beating that record. And you know, just having to deal with with so much hate back in 1974, and a lot of people may not Be familiar. So he actually broke Babe Ruth's record of 714. Not too long into the season. It was early in the season in 1974. This goes back to April 8th. We're taking on the Dodgers. This was Atlanta's home opener. They started the season and Cincinnati and the thing is that Hank our and had the gold the entire off season. Just prior people on his back, knowing that he was pulling up on the record. He detailed the fact that he had to go out of back doors of stadiums hey, needed up police around him to protect him and his family. Just because he was going to jump over a white man in the record books because baseball was considered a sport on Lee for whites. Especially for a segment of people that hate this man over a game. It can really show you how disgusting you know. Segments of society can be or hate for people who don't look like you. It It doesn't make any sense. But it exists here in the world and so Hank out, and he started his his baseball career off in Indianapolis in the Negro leagues. His contract was eventually bought. By the Braves, who happen to be in Milwaukee at that time, and he is one of the greatest players ever 25 time All Star. He was a World Series champ in Milwaukee before the Braves moved the 1966. He was an M V P Hey, still leads Major league baseball all time right now this minute. And R B. I's total bases. Extra base hits All Star appearances. He has gold gloves. This man has done it all. Not to mention the executive positions he held in his retirement, whether it be with the Braves or or Major League baseball or presidential honor or Medal of freedom. This man did it all. And you know it. Zip, Retty. Amazing. I want you to hear right now. And this is someone else that I personally love just as a broadcaster Vin Scully. And I am fortunate enough as many of you have heard Vince Scali growing up as certainly not his entire career, but growing up on the East Coast to turn on a Dodgers game. And see here. This one man show just pretty much describe everything that was going on. So I want you to hear right now. Vin Scully's home run call. Were Hank Aaron broke the all time home run record, And that case was held by Babe Ruth. This was April 8th 1974 and the fourth thing as Hank Aaron hit that home run off of our downing. One ball and no strike. Aaron waiting the outfield deep in straightaway fastball of the hydride of the Deep Left center field put that goes back to the fans City. So what a marvelous moment for baseball. What a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia? What a marvelous moment for the country in the world. A black man is getting a standing ovation in the deep South. Breaking a record of an old time baseball idol. And it is a great moment for all of it, and particularly for Henry Aaron. And I'm pretty sure for a lot of you. You can pretty much see that image of him. Rounding the basis, you know, being accosted by two fans. And you don't necessarily know and I wasn't alive at that point in time, but it's It's one of those images that you just grow up with. And you be. Probably have seen it and you just have no idea. What is going to happen as he rounds those bases. Hank Aaron was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1982. And I want you to hear Ah small piece. In the small segment of his speech just about how special he found his career to be. I have been extremely blessed in my lifetime. I stand here today because.

"He's not coming out so that we come off the field. We're losing four to three. We come off the field and social. First senator jeff hamilton's in exeter. Alfredo griffin is the third had earned the pitcher spot for so. I tell mike davis who had played for oakland the year before i said you hit the pitcher spot so now the clubhouse kid mitch pool sesame gives him want to say up in a tunnel so i got his uniform on says. Hey skip. I think i could hit for you and i ran right away because i don't want him to change his mind. No but i couldn't put him in unless there were two outs. So i go back and i tell davis change gonna hit for griffin now rather than the pitcher. 'cause gibson's going to hit the pitcher spot while shosha makes out and hamilton makes out now. Here comes a little bit of the strategy. Davis's up the plate. Gipson wants to go out on the on deck circle. And i said i don't want you out on that field. I want you right in this dugout. Because they that whole team over. There knows that. You're not going to play and i want them to think there. You're not gonna play. So i put dave anderson on-deck circle so in hassi. The catch looked at henderson. He said the and slaney pointed the anderson. Don't let davis hit the ball out of the ballpark. Because he played for them the year before. Twenty seven home runs so intentionally but unintentionally he walks even eckersley talked about this. He walks davis because he wants to pitch to anderson but he got the surprise of his life when at fourth ball was thrown. And i said now big boy get out there and when he came out run up the way the fans react. Because the right You know vince scali. And they're talking about not him not being able to come out fans electrcity. I got goosebumps that the reaction of the fan when they saw him come out. So i said to my coach. He is down at the Do you think that's Ross Tucker's? Do you believe in miracles? Call like Al Michaels had the unbelievable call in the Olympics with U S A hockey You had Jack Buck, and I don't believe what I just saw Vince Scali with the ball gets behind Buckner. We've had so many memorable calls, and Ross Tucker didn't say a word. All we did was laugh. And that's as he said last hour when he joined us. That was almost like if you're attaching an emoji to a game instead of words. He had the Emoji where the guy's smiling and he's got tears coming out of his honesty. And you know when you brought up last hour, Mark Malone of the Steelers had a 90 yard run. I know where you're going. We figured it out. He had a 90 yard catches a rookie, Bradshaw was still the head coach like a two yard past. Bradshaw, Still the the quarterback for the Steelers. Mark alone was drafted and it was a rookie and was Way out at wide receiver almost like a decoy and the defensive backs. It must have got confused or something and nobody over him. Bradshaw hit him with about a 20 yard Easy pass, and he just okay. It was like Daniel Jones. He was in the clear, so it's a 90 yard reception is only catch of his career. Marc Bolan. Did he score touchdowns Did Okay. He completed it completed the process there. Mark Malone was a great athlete coming out Arizona state, and then they drafted him in. You know, Terry was still there. I think Terry wasn't too thrilled that they're bringing in another quarterback. Jae in Texas joins us. Good Morning J. What's on your mind today? Damn gay floor to 20. As the You're the greatest shooter ever walk into a room and we all know that, but You're notorious for not passing the rock. So I really question I think it was yesterday. You talked about how you're the king of the sacrifice bunt. I'm doing it for the team. I really hate to bring it up. It just hurt. I'm sorry. Why are you sorry? Well, I just feel like those air contradiction, I think is the greatest shooter to ever live. Thank you. You'd be a home run King. Well, I wanted to be a home run King J. But if I could've, I would've, but thank you, Jay. You know you're a team player when you have to be a team player, not because I wanted to be I was already so far ahead of the baseball analytics like I was swinging and striking out a lot back then. Right, but I didn't have the launch angle and exit velocity hitting home runs. But I was trying. I wasn't sacrificing myself. I was actually trying to get on base, and I figured the best way to get on base is maybe bump double. Thank you for the compliment on my shooting. Direct big 10 football kicking off tonight. Illinois, Wisconsin. I'm ready. I kind of snuck up on us, didn't it? Ohio State against Nebraska, even though they haven't played yet they're five teams in the big 10 their rank. There's Ohio State. Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa was ranked in the preseason. And they have no margin for error. I saw where if a game is not able B is not able to be played in the big 10. The big 10 will deem any football game canceled by covert 19 as a no contest. They might be looking at winning percentage for a team in the Big 10 to play in the title game. If not everybody is able to play the same number of games. And you know, there's a debate here of how do you get into the final Four? You're going to need to pass the look test and this is what I was told that guy. I don't even know how many months ago it was when I told you that the big 10 was now coming back to play. And they wanted to know like how many games can we get in? And is that going to be enough to qualify for you know the final four appearance and my source said. That Ohio State was told you're gonna have to pass the look. See test. How good did you look in those games? They're going to play eight games. Hopefully, the conference championship game and that's enough to maybe hold off another team from the S E C or a C. C. But we'll find out soon enough when one of America's premier football conferences takes the field coming up this weekend, and Brady Quinn will join us. And he'll be there for the Ohio State Nebraska game. That's the big game on Fox at noon Eastern. We'll get his thoughts on that as well. More phone calls are always welcome. 8773 d P Show E MAIL. "Hi It's Bruce Jacobs Chronicle Sports Department pinchitting here giants splash today I have the pleasure doing Mike Crew Co and Dwayne Kuyper about their thirty years together broadcast giants games talking about some of their favorite moments on the air awkward moment or two and. How they're destined to have perhaps the longest lasting partnership in major league broadcasting, history hope, you enjoy it. Guys, this has been a real test for everyone in baseball players, the media everybody, and you know for you guys you're sitting there and Oracle Park. There's nobody around there's not even a game goading is even there on your rug asking came out of San Diego and. You know I think people would agree that in watching the telecast it's almost like normal and there's not even some plexiglass between you. I mean, what? What's what's it been like? Well, it's it's different and you know the biggest thing is we have a constant dialogue going on during the game that you know something will happen. We can hit the costs which you just look at each other and we can talk you know and it. Kind of. feels. Good to be able to do that with your friend will now out he's a glass between us. And, I, I can't hear that. Great. So he'll go. He'll go. No idea what we say. I missed that little pattern that we have. So yeah, adjustment. We do obviously hear what we're saying with the headphones but those little moments between. In the broadcast where we could hit our costs, which we have the conversation I missed that. So it's it's it's not as good as normally as but it's still great. Plus. Plus Jinx Week. We get the. We get the banter in between innings you know where you know maybe. Bruce Votes you did something and we need to talk about it to figure out what the heck is going on or. We can't do it. We understand that this is the way it is. And we're making the absolute best of it and we can't wait to get to the park to do it. That's the bottom line. Is Difficult as might be it's not that difficult. We still can't wait to get to the park that's point now, you always really missing. Is the. Three or two hours. Before the game where we have so much fun whether it be in the Dugout in the clubhouse at dinner in the lunchroom. Doing our scorecards all that has changed, and that's that's the two or three hours that I missed the most. Yeah. No kidding. And I'm sure there are some moments where. The Games it's a road game somebody hits the ball down the line but the the the camera doesn't follow it. You don't know if it's fair. Afoul. And there's a weird gap there well I. This is not a secret. I'll bet I'd said. On the ground. Floor as telling near Yeah. All that is is just a way of waiting to see what's going to awful. On Road Games. When the should on the ground, you don't have any idea if it's GonNa go through or not. The balls hitting the air. You don't have really idea if that somebody you're out of the park. So on the ground in the air so that the best you're gonNA. Get. With the phillies they had up. Richie Ashburn Whitey Ashburn. And they had Harry counts and they were a great team. It's an example of how a play by play guy watches. The game as opposed to a color Alice. I watched the Monitor I don't watch the field. Watches the Field Harry Kallis washes field. There was a time in. In. Philadelphia where there was a foul ball that went back behind the screen up towards the boot and Richie Ashburn is sitting there staring at the Monitor. The ball hits of rate the chest. You never see. Eric Cal. Starts laughing at him. Hell as pissed because. Very callous awarding. Your bigly. Your favorite thought you were going to catch the. He was bad because he he didn't give awards well. When we're here tonight abolishing fouled up, I'll go for the monitor not trained myself for years. Well, look up just so I don't get. Richie Ashburn right? Yeah. Because he could come back in the booth and he tiny smoke it ahead. With the giants are on the road and we're sitting up in the booth. Will be watching now here at Oracle Park it's guard. Out, there. Hitting back behind hope play in Arizona here. Sam. Cisco going. Look over the walls. So it's weird. That's when you know you're at a pandemic season right there. That's pandemic. All the way Oh, my God. Let me go back as you grew up in Wisconsin during a golden era for the Milwaukee Braves and with Earl Gillespie at the Mike and I'm just wondering. About Thirteen when you know when they're blasting and everything. But what was the influence there was? What was it like Father Earl Gillespie? Look in those days there. I can't remember race game on TV I. Mean the only time to raise run TV is when they were playing the cubs. and. In those games televised wgn. SPN Blaine. Walsh. were. They were your attachment to the game. and. They were bigger to me than any of the any other players I mean Hank Aaron Eddie Mathews here didn't get any bigger than that but real glaspie. At style of his own and I never listened anybody else. So I didn't know if Glaspie was good I just knew that he was my guy you have you tell me what was happening in turned out that he was really good. And then my. The beauty of Earl Glaspie is win. Atlanta braves, stole. Braves from Milwaukee. Earl the job in Atlanta and he said. I'm. Not. going. So stock went way up when he said that. Lesson. Yeah. That was a crusher. So for you, Mike, it's you know stricken Vince Scali for God's Sakes and you're certainly not gonNA nobody's ever going to be him but as new listen to this guy. And then get older. Once, you take from the way Van did a game that you can use. Well then then never. had. An analyst, he was his own analyst He was the color commentator he was the. Play by play guy, he was two guys in one. But any taught me baseball and I and I. Loved Him for it and I thanked for it i. got the. Thank you for that, which is free special. And? Thank him. Every year is better back for that. But what he did, which was so cool and I try to incorporate it. In.

Scully's also in there, and I started out the conversation with Vince Scali by asking him how his summer Wass My summer has been the Haydn seek. The temperatures out here have been unusually high were our backyard temperature one day. 117. However, my wife and I spend most of our lives now at home so I could just sum up the summer and two words at home. You miss watching games or calling games. You know, I don't miss calling them at all. And I must say, I kind of demand something from the game. I'm watching if it's very slowly played game. If it's just a long game, I might just turn it off and go to bed way. Gotta be reasonable here, Lee, So I like to watch him for a while. And right now it's for instance, today or this will be on the air tomorrow Friday. But today while we're taping this We have football coming on tonight. We have the Dodgers playing tonight. We have a basketball game tonight. So we spend our time my wife and I bouncing from one sport to another. And on the weekend we really look forward to watching golf. If you ever called a game without fans. No, never may be reasonably small crowds going backto Brooklyn where Ah, you could hear the voices of the individual fans. I remember. I had just started with Red Barber and Connie Desmond and I was really a kid, and there was a famous woman fan. Her name was Hilda Chester, and she had a cow bell, and she worked away all over the ballpark Shoe was extremely colorful on this particular day with a very small crowd. I heard her heavy voice say then, Scully. I love you and the crowd. Whatever that wass kind of laughed and I lowered my head. And she said, Look at me when I'm talking to you how small across it Wass one day and that, But how important is that crowd for you? Especially when you're doing a game on the radio. Oh, I loved it. I told the story many times When I grew up about eight years old. We had a big four legged radio and I would crawl underneath it. With some saltine crackers and a glass of milk and I would listen to a college football game. And let's just say it was Alabama, Tennessee. I had no idea who was playing or anything but I learned to love the roar of the crowd, and if I have a trademark or had it would be called a play that's quickly and accurately as I could, and then shut up. And listen to the crowd, and for a few seconds it was eight years old again and someone during one of the World Series games somebody hit a home run. And I called the home run and as networks are want to do, they showed the home run again and I just shot up and the columnist road. Perhaps then Scully made his greatest contribution by saying nothing. I took that to heart. I didn't think of it as criticism. I thought of is yes, You're right. The best thing I can do in the crowd roars is shut up. There's nothing about it, but to have that self discipline because it feels like announcers want to over call a game. And here you are. Having almost a seatbelt on to say plays over quiet, let the crowd or on beyond settle in, and it almost feels like it would draw me closer. Through the game while I'm listening because I almost lean in Mohr, because you're not saying anything. Yeah, I think again it goes all the way back to my love of the roar of the crowd. Probably. Ah, Couple of the longest pauses. While I had enjoyment of listening to the crowd, one would certainly the Kirk Gibson's oil Siri's homerun, and another one was Henry Aaron's record breaking on run. I mean, what the heck can you say? One should call the home run. Except sit back and really luxuriated listening to this crowd. Just be ecstatic. I loved it, but you were also in the call for the catch with Joe Montana and Dwight Clark. Did you react the same way in a football moment as you would in a baseball moment? Oh, sure. I mean, if I remember there was less than a minute to go and Montana throws to Clark and the catch is made and the Niners.

"Are we talking to Joe Burrow? And I said, Who is the best player on the team and he had no hesitation, he said. Clyde is a freak. And if you go back to those playoff games national title game, he was best player on the field. I thought, I mean, Joe's had a wonderful season. There's very few guys like Clyde Edwards lair in college football and, Ah, by all accounts, if you can just gear up to stop it. You know him? You've got Patrick Mahomes doing what he wants to do. And then you have that great luxury Where you just say I can use you out of the backfield and you run the ball. That's pretty impressive. That's pretty potent when the best offense in football got even better in the off season. It's pretty scary, and they were shown replays of Cee Lo at half time, and I think it was college were saying the first defender has to find him and then find a way to tackle him. He's like Leonard Fournette. You don't have to find bigger running backs. You don't have to find Derek Henry. Easy. You still to tackle him, but you know you want to find the guy. We'll take a break. We'll come back. We'll talk to Sean Salisbury about what he saw last night with the Texans against Kansas City Chiefs will also AH hear from Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. I felt bad for him because he was fogging up his mask there and he looked like he was out of, you know, some kind of No. Moon landing unit or something. And you could just tell if I could have heard him. You probably heard And then it would just fall guy, so I think he would call a play and then a pride didn't even know what happened on the play. Be like X rayed banana y on to where you came. Yesterday, and there was some dried up Mac and cheese on the corner. If you look at that is that I'm not one to talk. That's a cheap that is and of, of all, exactly, you, chief. 20 After the hour. We'll take a break Your phone calls or welcome will settle on a poll question We'll hear from Patrick Mahomes. We'll also talk to Chris Fowler in the Great Vince Scali in the final hour of his trigger. Meet Friday, 20 after the hour..

"Door Now pick it up here, man to 48. John Phillips Show Top Pretty of 7 90. ABC. As we told you at the beginning of the show, Twitter has new user It's Vince Scali, the legendary Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster. Who is now exposing himself to the sewer that is social media. And Randy. Well, I predicted that it would take exactly 45 seconds before the trolls came out. You've been monitoring his feed since he joined Twitter. What has he seen in response so far? Well, And this is a really inspiring story because Vin Scully, who joined Twitter, not even three hours ago. Has already accumulated 70 for 1000 followers. He's now a member of the Blue Czech Brigade. He is officially verified by Twitter that it is Vin Scully tweeting. And of the thousands of responses from his initial video. He doesn't have any haters, everyone, even the Giants fans. They're loving Vin Scully. Right now. There is no negative dented. It's unbelievable. You could put a picture of your cat in a potted plant on Twitter, and you're going to be called the F word within about 14 seconds. Everything on the Internet is divisive every single thing I think they found the one thing that everyone can agree on and is that Vince Scali is alleged. Now there are many cases where politics and sports inner sect with one another these days and he said, explicitly, In fact, I believe we have the sound that he doesn't want his feet to be controversial at all. But at some point, someone's going to try to drag him into it. Hi, everybody and a very pleasant good afternoon to you. This has been making his debut on social media, and it's nice to be welcomed. I'm delighted to see if I can't serve you in any way FAI perform. We might chat about a famous date in baseball or a player or a team. And hopefully nothing controversial. This is strictly a meeting of friends having some fun talking about our favorite subject, so pull up a chair and be ready to join me. Hopefully in the very near future as we start our careers together. On social media, So I'm assuming it's going to be mostly baseball talk, although occasionally even in a Dodger game, he would get a little political. Here's been Scully going off on socialism. Socialism,.

"If you're watching the Dodger game last night, you may have caught this, but Jack Peterson used the F word. No, there's nobody there in the stands, so I thought, Well, hell, I'll just, you know, bang this one out. And the cameras and the audio picked it up. It sounded Like this. Anderson beats that one into the ground. Flip to Garcia. Jack Peterson. You could hear because the stadium is empty. And you could tell that they they weren't into it. Right? How funny was that? Did you hear alive and you see the the aversion that snidely I didn't catch it live, but I caught it on social media. So obviously I had to believe it for you for the show tonight. We should. We should put a link to it. Maybe you and Morgan configure out how to do that. You guys were young. You're smart, but howto to put up the original one on our Twitter and social media. Because playing it with the bleeps, and it sucks right. We have Tio because of the F C. C, But it's much more interesting to he'll appear the A really deal. Do you think? Do you think they should Pump crowd noise in or do you want to hear the sounds of the game like I don't know. I'd like to hear the sounds of the game. We never could get that opportunity. Yeah, And they're also the guy sweetening the game, you know, putting in the crowd noises. He could have fall sleep a switch right? Because there was one play that she had been implausible grow like a man that I screwed up. It is an art to actually be able to do that to sweeten the game and bring the audience in, you know into it, but I don't know There's just something I there's something lacking about. I was trying to figure it out last night, while Watching the highlights and and I think it's tough for like the announcer is to get up to get the and say the same enthusiasm going Three announcers feed off the crowd, and there's no crowd there, so they're talking to nobody, And so did the players. The players really play off the crowd to like. If Cody Bellenger were to hit a home run right, and there's 50,000 crowns 50,000 people in the crowd going crazy, he might pump his chest to do something to get the crowd going, but with no one there, I know there's no excitement. I was at the very last game. They had Vin Scully called you a few years back. Oh, yeah. In the game. I went to the zoo. Go to that game. No, but I remember the game. You know, the game was great. The Dodgers tied it up in the bottom of the ninth. And then want it in the bottom of the 10th both off home runs. And it was one of the great games ever than everybody stood stayed around because Vince Scali was going to make his retirement announcement the final announcement from Vin Scully from Dodger Stadium. It was about three days before he actually retired because they Dodgers head A road trip up to San Francisco, where, you know, he called his very last game, But the last game of Dodger Stadium was great. I mean, it was. I mean, what a way to go out for Vin Scully for him to be able to call a home run in the ninth to tie it up in a home run in the 10th. Win it and I believe Amber with airplane. I believe they took it. Ah, one run edge in the top of the 10th and the Dodgers scored too. I think that's how it went. But it was one of the great games of all time. That's right, because there was 60,000 or 58 5000 people there. That's what made it great. The whole stadium was shaking. Yeah, that moment. The magnitude of the moment. Oh, yes. Because of the fans. That's right. Yeah, and now the fans aren't there, and I think you're right. It's hard for the announcers. It's hard for the umpires are for the players. It's hard for everybody. To get it up because they're not, you know, get the energy up because that's you know their their entire career is, you know, showing you know millions of people how much better they are than you at that game. And there's nobody there. You know, it's like playing. It's this say, Here's how I've just figured out. It's the same energy that these guys have in this game as they do in the preseason. No one's there. Yeah, it feels like it feels like just a exhibition game like that's right. It's nothing really. Yeah, that's right. It feels like it's an exhibition game and and they got to do something about that. Over here is again and then we'll put up the real deal on Social media. Anderson beats.

"He has written a book about one of the all time. Greatest if not the very greatest sports broadcasters ever particularly in baseball and I'll tell you about that in a second but we've got another anniversary coming up very very shortly back in nineteen eighty eight is when we launched sports byline and I remember that night very very well because we only had twelve radio stations with us. Nobody had ever done a syndicated radio network. Sports talk show and I didn't know whether anybody would respond but I knew I like to interview people and I knew I could always do that for two hours because the show at the very beginning was only two hours a night Monday through Friday but it expanded to three hours a night because the station's wanted more and then it went overnight Monday through Friday and then it went seven days a week and then we added more program and that is exactly where we are today. And I'm particularly proud of that and I'd like to thank all the affiliates that have been with us over the years and of course now we've moved beyond syndicated radio satellite radio. Were also up on the in flight audio systems of airlines US Airways World Airways and others you can catch us Also on the Zun. You can catch us on up. Snap on your mobile devices. And we're on the American forces network stations which I particularly proud of and so our servicemen and servicewomen. I just WanNa say thank you and as you probably know. I traveled to Iraq or Afghanistan. Five different times to take sports byline to the troops and It is the thing that I will remember most about this experience. Curt Smith is standing by to join us. Kurt is a noted baseball broadcast historian and he has a book out called. Pull UP A chair. The Vince Scali Story. And of course you know. Vin scully is one of the greatest. If not the greatest baseball announcers ever the book chronicles his life and career and also he holds the distinction of the longest consecutive service of any current major league broadcaster for one team. And that one team being the Los Angeles dodgers so curt Smith will be here to talk..

But I go back to. An interview I did back when the Braves Ron WSB radio, and I used to do the pregame postgame show. Alan Hunte knows USA engineer those broadcasts. And in one of the pregame shows, I got to interview Vince, scali, Vince gully, the waste of the dodgers. Like the legend the the greatest play by play baseball player baseball broadcaster of all time, and I ask VIN Scully. Because at the time we had skipped Don Joe and Pete which I thought were amazing the dream team. And I said do venom VIN. Do you ever listen to other broadcasts, you know, to see what everyone else is doing? And Vince gully says to me this is an exact, quote, he goes he goes. No. And I go why not he goes? I don't wanna water my wine. Like what he goes. Yeah. I'm afraid that if I listen to other broadcasters. They will influence me in the way, I do my and I'll I'll inadvertently or subconsciously take what they're doing. And bring it in my broadcast. We says I don't want to water my wine. So I've taken that into mytalk career. I try not I listen to Howard Stern. But like yeah same here. And you have to be careful that you did that lead into your like regular local talk shows. Like, I I try not to. I mean, I listened yesterday because you were filling in thank you. But like, I try really not to listen to other talk shows. So I don't water my wife understood. So if the bosses listening, that's why I refuse to listen to Sean Hannity is because I don't want to what's wrong with you. I don't wanna listen to your show either pal. I get ready for my TV show. I used to love it her. Herb used to say, we do, you know at the end of the traffic report during Atlanta's evening news with Eric Erickson doctrine, really like are coming up next Czech twenty five. You know, the throwback Ericsson Cabourg used to say coming up after the Hannity vanity. Our? Sale to the Hannity. Anyway, do me let me close my eyes. All right. And do do me. Now, this is Tim Andrews as market feel on the spot. So let me see if I can dig it out. Hey, Mark Arum with you. I'm here year. Puke. I know it does. Think about it in spring it on me.
