"And you know how much money there is when it comes to that type of, you know, the number one position on cable television. And I just thought there's got to be so much money to back this guy and he was gone and he's never come back and he was, you know, so that's when it really hit me that like if this stuff comes out, you know, no matter how big you are, RV Weinstein or whoever, you know, it's like, you know, if it's public, you know, no matter what your power is, your vulnerable to it, as you should be. I mean, if you, if you use your power on women, in this day and age, I mean, you know, it happened in the past and all that, but that's so many horrible things that happen in this world in the past. And it's a good thing that those things are no longer acceptable. I mean, it's a sign of progress. And you're mentioning now because sometimes that was very interesting that you pointed out when Vince finally sent out this random tweet that at 77 it's time for me to retire. It was after 5 o'clock on a Friday, which means that the stock market closed 4 o'clock. 5 minutes earlier. 5 minutes early. Right, it just closed. And so the timing of that was perfect. You know, they wanted it on a Friday so that the market wouldn't they thought it would, you know, events was gone that maybe it would crash because when George barrios and Michelle Wilson both got fired by Vince, the stock went way, way down and Vince is obviously far more powerful and far more influential. But the funny part is the opposite happened because all of a sudden everybody was going like, with Vince gone, they can sell this company now. Vince might have held up a sale. And so the stocks are going to be working more because now people who know that they can buy the company. So it hasn't hurt the stock. I mean, that was the first thing I thought was, okay, now Vince being gone, now the stock's really going to be in trouble. And then it went way up and people were going like, hey, you know, and it actually the stuff about the sale had actually kind of started brewing in Wall Street before Vince was gone. You started hearing rumblings that people just expected like it was more likely to happen. And then as soon as it's been sold, it's like, okay, now there's all these stories going out of who's best to buy the company. And you know, with the sales been talked about since 2016. For sure. But, you know, now it's like, you know, it's closer to reality and I think the stock market reflected that. Okay, listen, we know Vince. And I guarantee he had never once ever even said the word retire. So for him to leave under the auspices of retiring, it's just not in that guy's DNA. What happened that week that day that made him do that so quickly? Is there something else coming out? I don't know of anything. I mean, there's people who are working on stories that I'm aware of, perhaps, you know, the board got something in the investigation or perhaps it was just that second story where, but I mean, you know, he was still in creative for a couple weeks after that second story and that one didn't seem to hurt that much. But obviously there was something huge and I'm sure it was not a voluntary decision, but it was one of those things where you are now in a position where you're going to hurt the company. And I do believe that if Vince McMahon thought that he was going to hurt the company by staying that he would leave. I think that's the one thing he would do. He's not going to take his legacy down. I mean, the WWE is his life legacy. He's going to be there long after he's gone. And I don't think he wants to be the one to take it down. I think he wants it to live forever. But, you know, like that one question that you're asking is still the big one unanswered question. Who said what to Vince? Right. Who said you got to go Vince, you really got to go. And I don't know who that is. And I don't know what the thing was, whether it was the, you know, the $7.5 million settlement or whether it's something new or just the idea that these stories are going to keep coming and keep coming and you're going to have to leave anyway. So this may be the time to leave. That's the thing. I think you had a great point of because there was some times where I would see some of the booking decisions that Vince was doing over the last couple of years and going, is he trying to be a doctor Frankenstein and, you know, this is my creation. If I can't, you know, own it, I'm going to kill it, but that's Vince would never do that either, you know? No, no, no. Look, you know, we always watch the shows and there's things that I look at and go, oh, God, you know? Nobody's a 100%. Yeah, what's he doing? But you know, I mean, the one thing is just like, you know, they were losing popularity. And that's one of the reasons that AEW was able to get where you got so quick. But in the last year, and especially not even I wouldn't even say the last year, the last few months, but even before the vin scandal. I mean, the Vince scandal definitely helped the ratings.

"Let's move on to the second important now because the first one we mentioned earlier and it comes out Vince steps down figuratively, but he's still on TV, tells everyone he's not going anywhere. What happened in that second report to make things where he was not as flippant about it anymore. So they had four allegations and a total of 12 million in payments, including a $7.5 million payment to a female restaurant which was interesting because the basic story of her is that she was in the company and the claim was that Vince coerced her into oral sex and then when she broke up whatever it was, she was demoted and then when her contract expired, she was let go. So she was never fired. And this was like 2005, 2006 when this was going on. And there's people who could sleuth and look at the people who were fired and kind of come down with, you know, there's maybe one person or a couple people that fit that bill. And then in 2018, the same person got the settlement. So she was quiet for a dozen years, didn't say anything. And then she got a settlement, but not just a settlement like 7.5 million. And there were a couple of other $1 million settlements. There was a $1 million settlement for an NDA on another woman having to do with John Warren itis. So that was the one where John was sealed if he wasn't sealed the first time. Like I knew, John laurinaitis is not a guy who's going to have two allegations against him publicly and be saved. Right. Vince McMahon, on the other hand, you know, all bets are off who knows. But the second one, because there were so many and it would total 12 million. And the fact that the company didn't know and didn't list it, you know, as far as there are publicly traded company, that was the SEC violations. And that's another thing. The SEC is doing investigation. There's a federal probe and all these things are going on on Vince. And so because of those things, it looks like that's why he had to step down. I mean, certainly temporarily, but it looks like it's, I mean, just because of everything I think it's got to be permanent, but the question is, he's still the number one stockholder. He is off. He did also leave the board of directors, which I think he had to. So he's got no title in the company he's gone from the company he created and Stephanie did the thing on television basically saying he's retired and thank you, Vince. And that's it. They never mention his name again. There's little hints here and there where they kind of say things are new. But yeah, his name hasn't been mentioned since the Stephanie thing. So going back to and once again, you can sleuth if you want to figure out who it might be or what the candidates are, but I don't want to talk about that. What I want to talk about is, why would the settlement be so big? Like you said 7 and a half $1 million. That's huge. That's huge. Yeah, but it might be because that's the one that really could have brought him down in 2018. In 2018, you know, Vince is way invincible. And then all of a sudden, somebody comes up with, you know, whether true or not, or she perceives it this way. And you know, people can perceive things different and go like, you know, you coerced me into sex and then you let me go and if I go public, it's kind of like that one would be a face and it would be someone who people would know from television. Right. Said, you know, and you know, most likely, the woman's probably not that this matters, but that diva era. So if someone who, you know, you look at and people will go, oh my God, you know, it's like, you know, she's hot, right? Right. So that kind of looks bad. You know, not to mention Vince being married, although I don't think, you know, it's funny because I don't think that the fact Vince was married has ever played in any of this because people completely accept that part. And that's the funny part too, and just to clarify what you're saying, the diva era that was diva search, where we're finding lingerie models and Playboy models and bringing them into wrestling. So by design, they were there to be there because they were because they were gorgeous women. But yeah, yeah, I don't think that that made the difference as much as just a face coming out and saying this. And then the public kind of like, you know, I mean, I guess the public is going to believe what they want to believe. But something else that it's really interesting to me, like you said, Vince in 18 being invincible, and now leaving so quickly, it really is kind of you think maybe because the whole me too era happened that that made it even worse for him. Absolutely. And also, you know, look at, I mean, much bigger fish than Vince have been, you know, have had to leave companies. Because when the thing first, when the second story came, that's when people were going to me and I was even going like, you know, I mean, there are people, you know, like Vince is so powerful in wrestling, but in the real world, there were people a lot more powerful than him that are gone from their companies and I mean, the one that surprised me in a sense, and he had to go, but I mean, I remember Bill O'Reilly on Fox News, and he was the king of cable news. This was like, this is a guy who's one man ratings juggernaut.

"Day is finally come that I would say that I never saw coming and I probably gave a degree with me on this. Of course, Vince McMahon retired air quotes from the WWE and basically persona non grata in the company. A very, very quickly. Are you still a surprise as I am Dave that this sees even happened? I mean, the whole last, whatever it's been month, 6 weeks has been, it's blown my mind because, I mean, at some point he was going to be gone, but it was like, it was always going to be this monumental, incredible seismic shift in the world when it happened. And you know, you never expected to happen like right now. And then when the story started breaking, I started thinking, you know, it's really possible. And I know people who are friends of mine, you know, Silicon Valley, corporate, and they were telling me he's going to be gone. And I was kind of like, well, he may be, but this is wrestling and it's different. They go, this is a publicly traded company. And you can't do that stuff with employees. And the second story, when the second Wall Street Journal story happened, I read that and I thought, you know, he's going to be out. But then like a week later, it's kind of like, now he'll never leave. Then the day that it came out that he was resigning, it was like, oh my God, you know what I mean? It's like 40 years of my life has been chronicling Vince McMahon among many things, but more Vince McMahon than anything else. And it's like, you know, for both of us because you've worked there for, you know, starting in 99. 99, almost 20 years, yeah. Yeah, and you were following it since you were a child, Vince McMahon's wrestling. So it's like this huge part of both of our lives is like over all of a sudden, you know? And it was really, it was weird to deal with. It's interesting. I spoke to Alex Van Halen a couple months ago and he was saying when Eddie Van Halen passed away and it's like this whole 40 year career gone in one last breath. You know, and obviously Vince is still with us, but it reminded me of the same thing. 40 years plus of wrestling and Vincent van synonymous and then done, that quick, boom, gone. Yeah. And it really did surprise you because once again, maybe because, you know, you and I live within the kind of the wrestling bubble where it's like, it's just wrestling and nobody takes in the corporate world takes wrestling seriously and, you know, he beat the government and he's been through this scandal. He's been through that scandal and this one will just go away. I was really thinking for a while that it was just gonna be kind of a flash in the pan and then it Vince would just make it disappear like he did everything else. Yeah, and it's funny because it's like, it's like you know why he left in the big picture because of everything, but there's still unanswered questions of how did it actually go down like did the rest of the company go to him and go, you just have to leave or come to this conclusion that I have to leave because the walls are closing in on me because I mean like on July the second in Vegas when they had the pay per view money in the bank, he told all the town he's staying, you know? Right. And three weeks later, they find out he's gone. And you know, people who I talk to and probably you talk to, they were shocked because, I mean, their whole lives have been determined by Vince McMahon. Every one of them since the day they started in the company and now it's like what's going to happen and now we kind of know who's in charge of what now, you know, a couple of took a couple of days to figure all that out. And it was like, but we know, but it's like it's a different world in a different culture. And yeah, it's just, it's just so weird that no Vince McMahon and wrestling. Well, and like you said, too, he told the talent and obviously he was given kind of a proverbial, you know, maybe not a middle finger, but a shoulder shrug when he came out on TV. Right. You know, twice and not even to do anything substantial just to say, hey guys, here I am. Yeah, yeah, yeah, the first, especially the first time when it was the day that the story first broke and he came out and it was pretty clear, you know, the whole thing of like, hey, I'm going, you know what I mean? I'm going nowhere. Yeah. I mean, and then he actually left. Yeah. So let's kind of go back a bit and kind of talk about how this story all started brewing, and we could talk about some of some of his other big scandals in the past, but let's talk about this one specifically. When did we start hearing about it and were there kind of rumors swirling that something's coming up or was it just a report that came out of the blue a couple of months ago? The first report in The Wall Street Journal to me came out of the blue. I had no idea anything was up and it's funny because I got this text and it was from The Wall Street Journal and my phone and you know, I get text from them when it comes to news all the time.

"In this country. What has happened to Vince McMahon? Is he still in charge at WWE? It's unclear right now. This is a classic wrestling situation where the reality is so hard to parse because there are so many layers of ambiguity. When The Wall Street Journal allegations came out, the announcement was Vince McMahon will be stepping back, not stepping down, but stepping back as chairman and CEO and his daughter, Stephanie, was made the quote unquote interim chairman and CEO, interim between what, between Vince coming back, who knows. And Vince, even in the official announcement about how he's stepping back as chairman and CEO. They're like, they said, he'll retain control over creative. And like I said, creative is basically what he spent most of his time on anyway, so it's unclear how much power he actually gave up. And more importantly, more importantly than that, he appeared. So the show starts, right? And no one knows what's going to happen. But what happens is the show starts. And his music hits.

"Support for the program as you heard earlier comes from a podcast called are you sleeping to be quite honest? This morning when I was doing my whole slowly waking up thing, I could just hear this like what sounded like in the distance to someone like clipping their toenails, but it was bigger than that because I could hear it from my bedroom. It was almost like God was clipping her toenails outside or something. You know, I could not figure out what it was and it was preventing me from sleeping and it was annoying and I wondered if it was something sort of liminal, I don't know that I wasn't hearing, was it a hallucination? I have no idea. The point of the story is all sorts of things get in the way of our sleep, but our sleep is super important on a future episode of are you sleeping? You will meet Olympic bobsledder Lauren Gibbs. She's had some trouble sleeping and it's super important for her because hello, athlete, Olympic athlete in LS, check out are you sleeping? Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Are you sleeping? Listen. I enjoy destroying lives. Today explained we're back with Abe reisman, Abe is a journalist and author of the forthcoming book ringmaster. Vince McMahon and the unmaking of America. So Abe, as you've described it, McMahon builds this world of hyper masculinity, women get almost no respect, but he's playing a character or so millions of people assume. And then you start looking into an allegation from 1984. What happened? Rita chatterton became the first female referee in the WWF. In 1984. Referees have a weird job in wrestling because it's not actually a legitimate athletic competition. So what's the referee doing there? Well, the referee is part of the story. What is her affiliation here with Alex no. Well, there it is. Wait a minute. This was a sucker job the whole way. What she's got teddy long turned the wrong way. Don't blame teddy long ladies and gentlemen. Look at this face first goes delo. The referee is the person who slaps the map three times for a three count when somebody pins or accepts the submission when somebody's in a submission hold. All of this stuff that's sort of key to the illusion of the match. And Rita trained to be a referee. So Rita started doing shows for the WWF that were assigned to her by the New York State Athletic Commission. And she pretty quickly gets a big bump up to being a referee at a match at Madison Square Garden. And the reason was, at the time, Vince was executing this storyline in the WWF that was ostensibly pro women's live. You better watch out because these are powerful words because this is a powerful woman and I'm a powerful manager now because you'll recall this where you have Cindy lauper getting involved as a manager for Wendy Richter. Cindy lauper, tell me about this lady to your immediate left. She's the chance. She's strong. She has new ideas. New purpose and new meaning. And she's gonna give a joke to women wrestling like never before. That's right. Rita gets this call from Vince McMahon in 1984 saying, hey, we want you to do a bunch of stuff for us because that's what they were highlighting was, you know, they wouldn't have used the word progressive, but you know, we're a company that cares about women. And long story short, Rita worked as a referee for the WWF for a couple of years. And then in 1986, she went to a TV taping, a series of matches in Poughkeepsie, New York to go get an audience with Vince, not even to referee, but to get an audience with Vince and ask, she could get more work. Vince's driver got out and opened the door, and I thought Vince was going to get out. But instead, Vince said demeanor read a come in here. He says, we'll just sit and talk here. I didn't think much of it. I got in the limo with him. Then started talking about magazines. Next thing I know Vince McMahon is unzipping his pants. And according to her that night, Vince raped her in his limo. When I couldn't complete his desires, he got really angry, started ripping off my jeans. Pulled me on top of him and told me, again, if I wanted to have a $1 million a year contract, I had to satisfy him. And if I didn't satisfy him, I was blackballed. That was it. I was done. Afterward, according to Rita, she contacted a lawyer. The lawyer told her because she had showered and not called the cops immediately. It was going to be a really hard case because Vince was very powerful and wealthy and she wasn't. So she didn't say anything. And then shortly after her father died, she gets a call from Geraldo Rivera's team. And sure enough, she appears on now it can be told and the Geraldo Rivera show to lodge this accusation. The very first time I met Vince, I was told that if I had any sexual relationships with anyone in the federation. I was done. My career was done. When Vince was said and done, Vince looked at me and said, do you remember what I told you about having sexual relationships with anyone? Well, you just did. And he just sat back and had this big smile and this big grin and she started laughing at me. What's odd is the story just sort of went away. It was something that people in wrestling sometimes knew about, but wrestling forgets its history very easily readily and often. At the time, did Vince McMahon have to answer, he did. And he answered by suing her and Geraldo and her I'll just produce her. And that scared her into silence to a certain extent. It was a lawsuit that scared her, and she basically disappeared for 30 years. And that was about as far as it got for a long time. One of the reasons Vince was able to beat these accusations for the most part, or at least have them kind of roll off his back, was especially as time went on. Vince started to portray himself as a heel. By the late 90s, he's appearing as the character, mister McMahon. What else is going to happen here? What is this? That's fishman. And mystery fans hold deal is that he's the ultimate heel. He's just a terrible person who will do nothing. We'll stop at nothing in his pursuit of power and victory. And that really works for Vince. And then in June of this year, The Wall Street Journal reports a big story about McMahon and it's kind of a bombshell. A paralegal who'd worked for the WWE, a friend of hers reached out to the WWE board and said, my friend had this sexual relationship with Vince, and he paid her to shut up about it. Out of his own money, I should say. According to the article, this was not the only hush money payment. The idea is there may be a long history of women being paid off not to talk. And we don't know what those situations are. Women are paid off not to talk for a wide array of reasons

"Today explained I'm Noel king, and once upon a time, the early 1990s, I was a rabid fan of world wrestling entertainment. I loved a clothesline. I loved a pile driver. I loved rowdy Roddy Piper. Avery Smith was also a fan. Abe is a journalist and author of the forthcoming book ringmaster. Vince McMahon and the unmaking of America. Abe, who is Vince McMahon. Vince McMahon is the longtime owner and the overlord of world wrestling entertainment or what was once known as that. Now it's just WWE. You and God. Versus me. Vincent Kennedy McMahon and the product of my semen. It's my son's day. The short version is he's the guy who runs more wrestling and has run more wrestling in America than anyone else. I've gotten appetite for life and a lot more, more, more. So WWE is a massive corporation to $1 billion corporation that is not just about wrestling. It's a multimedia empire. They create content for a wide array of mediums and audiences. Welcome to McMahon's $1 million mania. Vince McMahon is very powerful, man. And that's often underestimated because wrestling isn't taken seriously. When did Vince McMahon become the chairman and CEO of WWE? You know, the title sort of changed somewhat arbitrarily, but it's almost like the titles don't matter nearly as much as the fact that just everyone knows Vince is in control. And he has been since 82 83 when he started taking over from his father, specifically the thing he spends his most time on is creative. The actual stuff that gets performed. Now a lot of CEOs or majority shareholders, whatever, would sort of stay out of the specifics. Bob chapek at Disney doesn't get to in the weeds with approving every single line in every single marvel movie script. But that's what Vince does with his own product. The hype leading up to the match is very carefully choreographed. Vince McMahon literally looks upon that hype the same way the producer of dynasty or Dallas looks at his screenplay. He retains an enormous amount of micromanaged control over what goes on in his programming. He's the promoter. That's the term from wrestling is promoter, the person who owns the promotion, the organization, where the wrestling happens. And that's unambiguously been Vince since the early 80s. And the rustling business, it's two or more individuals going out to the ring, rustling, having a little bit of applause or what have you from the audience in it's time to go home until the next match. That's not really what we do. We're in the sports entertainment business in the area is a huge philosophical difference. I wonder if this was a succession type situation. Was it always guaranteed that this was going to be the family business? Well, it was not guaranteed that Vince was going to inherit the family business for sure. Because he didn't. He had to buy it from his father. My dad was talking about selling out and that frightened me. So I knew there was just some way I had to get my hands on this company. He did a series of what are called balloon payments. Over the course of four quarters between 82 and 83, June 82 to June 83, he had to pay about a $1 million to his father and his father's co owners of what was then the capitol wrestling corporation. Vince senior had a lot of difficulties with Vince junior for lack of a better term. They had a lot of differences both in personality and business approach and Vince always says I knew my dad wouldn't really sold me the business had he known what I was going to do. Aha. What was he going to do? What was the big change? Vince's plan and he executed it was to take over wrestling. Vince McMahon, working with his wife Linda, begins building a national and international brand for wrestling. In the process, he will nearly decimate the existing wrestling establishment in a controversial offensive worthy of the military commander. At the time, wrestling was a regional art form. You would go to wrestling in your hometown and the wrestling there would be run by a promoter who only operated in that region. And Vince's goal was to sort of smash up the smoke filled room of old wrestling and take over. Now, there was going to be an earthquake in wrestling already was anyway with the advent of cable television, so something would have happened to break up the territory system anyway. But the fact is Vince was the one who was able to capitalize on it. Vince was the one who had a vision of taking this existing system and replacing it with his own. And for the most part, he did. It took a while to get to near monopoly status. And in 2001, he had no more major competitors. His vision came true.

Kurt Angle Revisits 'WrestleMania Goes Hollywood' and the Thrill of Entertaining

"I'm curious in a segment like this because you've had some of the best matches wrestling history. But you've also had some really comedic home runs. You have a preference. I mean. obviously there's got to be shouldn't say obviously i don't know but there's gotta be a bunch of adrenaline in the middle of a match and you can feel that crowd but when you're doing an entertaining skit like this and you know it's hitting. How does that compare worry. You like man. I got him there in the palm of my hand. I it's it's like hitting a grand slam. It's like winning the super bowl. It's like winning. Olympic gold medal When you when you nail it and you know you did You can't be happier. It's i. I enjoy doing that more in the wrestling. And you know how much. I love getting shirt wrestling so Yeah being entertaining is was the most important thing to me. And i got away from it after a while and i got more into the more intense wrestling machine kurt angle and that was. Because vince mcmahon want me to start portray myself as more serious right But i love. I love making an ass out of myself in. Throw myself out there that that that was really. You know that that's the biggest test to show your confidence that if you can go out there and perform and do stuff. You're not used to doing and you can do a pretty well. That's that's a sign of somebody that has talent

The History Of Kayfabe

"Earned. Modern professional wrestling began back in the early twentieth century. When carnivals would put on catch wrestling exhibitions this was real wrestling. The competitors were actually wrestling with each other and there would be prize money to the winner. The wrestlers would often competing against locals. Who would win a prize. If they could defeat the carnival strongman so they really did have to know how to wrestle and fight. Unfortunately many of the competitive matches were really boring the bouts rough and nothing more than wrestling holds. Which could last for over an hour watching grown men grab each other for. That long really wasn't that entertaining. The whole point of carnival wrestling wasn't terrestrial it was to make money. Eventually the promoters figure out they could sell more tickets if they made the matches more interesting and that is how started the word k. Fame but self comes from kearney. Talk which is a pig. Latin type of language which was spoken by carnival workers k. Fehb just means fake. As the carnivals began predetermining the winners of fights it was a shortstop to adopting the tropes which were used in all good dramas good versus evil heroic comebacks treachery and betrayal. All of those became part of professional wrestling in order to put on a better show and sell tickets. However at no point did they ever say that the performance was predetermined people had to think they were watching illegitimate competition. So a bad guy and a good guy couldn't be seen together before or after a show the head to commit to their characters all the time. This is the primary difference that separates k. fehb from acting actors perform role and. Everyone knows that they're watching performance in k. Fehb the performer is living the role even when they're not performing and they're trying to convince the audience that israel for decades keeping cafe was the single biggest rule in professional wrestling. It was the wrestling equivalent to magicians not. Divulging the secrets. The primary care mechanism was having baby faces which were the good guys in heels which were the bad guys. The bad guys had to be bad guys all the time. If they were asked for autographs by fans at an airport they would often refuse to sign an insult. The fans just to keep k fehb when wrestlers travelled between cities heels and faces would often have to travel in separate cars and stay in different rooms. Just to keep k fehb. They would even have different locker rooms backstage. Occasionally they would screw up. Wrestlers would get in big trouble if they broke k. Fehb in one thousand nine hundred eighty seven. The iron sheik. Who was a heel was traveling with. Hacksaw jim duggan. Who has a face. They were both pulled over and arrested for possession of marijuana and cocaine when the arrests made the news to cause controversy. Because these two guys were supposed to be enemies yet. They were traveling with each other on rare occasions. A wrestler may go off script and try to really injure another performer. Any sort of predetermined match or storyline is called a work in wrestling circles. And something which is real or off script is called a shoot in two thousand and four for example. The wwe was running a reality show where the contestants compete to become professional wrestlers. One of the contestants was daniel putter. Who is a real life. Mma fighter on an episode of monday night raw wrestler. Kurt angle issued a challenge for one of the contestants to come out and fight him. According to the script putter was supposed to come out and quickly lose however he decided to actually fight for real on live. Tv when angle wasn't expecting it. Putter tried to put england submission hold instead of losing however kurt angle is a real life olympic gold medalist in amateur wrestling and would have none of it. Technically fehb died in professional wrestling in nineteen eighty nine. When vince mcmahon the owner of the then. Wwf testified before the new jersey state legislature that wrestling was scripted in the matches predetermined this was done in order to avoid being taxed and regulated. Like a real sport today in professional wrestling cave is pretty much dead the. Wwe hosts our own documentaries where wrestlers talked out of character and will often break cafe within their own shows however as cafe has died in professional wrestling it seemingly has taken off in other parts of our culture one of the best examples would be mohammed ali yes that mohammed ali to be sure. All of his boxing matches were real and he was one of the greatest boxers in history however the persona. he created of the arrogant loud rhyming. Fighter was total k. fehb he recalled in a nineteen sixty nine associated press interview about a chance encounter with professional wrestler gorgeous george in nineteen sixty one in las vegas. He said quote. I got it from seeing gorgeous. George russell in las vegas. I saw his aides spraying deodorant and opponents corner to contain the smell. I also saw thirteen thousand full seats. I talked with gorgeous for about five minutes after the match and started being a big mouth and a brighter. He told me people would come to see me. Get beat others would come to see me. When i'd get coming and going and quote alley began creating poems about how pretty was and how ugly. His opponents were his interviews with sportscasters. Like howard cosell. Legendary gorgeous georgia's prediction was absolutely true. Love him or hate him. You couldn't ignore. mohammed. Ali

Dwayne The Rock Johnson is Buying an Entire Football League

"For many of us, Monday nights sieve Longman, Monday, night football. So today's a good day to consider a shakeup in the football world. The potential revival of a would be competitor to the National Football League last week actor and former pro wrestler Dwayne the Rock Johnson with other investors bought a start-up Football League called the xfl this take some explanation especially to those who aren't avid sports fans. Let's start with the xfl contrary to popular belief. The NFL doesn't football is just had a monopoly for the most part for so long that most. Most people consider it an institution for the last couple of decades though rivals have attempted to build new leagues to compete with the. NFL. The XFL is one of those its roots began way back in the year two, thousand when World Wrestling Federation chairman. Vince. McMahon decided to build a league that could compete with the NFL NBC Cohen the League and planned to carry its games the XFL plan to extend the football season by playing games from just after the Super Bowl in February. Until late April. Now, at the time league owners, hopes were high that the Saturday night games could Wu and elusive audience TV. Teenage boys according to CNN. Vince McMahon. WWF had been almost magical in its ability to appeal to twelve to twenty four year. Old Males who typically don't stay home watching TV on Saturday nights. The xfl hoped McMahon could bring that WWF formula to football and win that desirable TV audience, and for one brief moment, it looked like their hopes were within reach the first game in two thousand, one drew more than fifteen million viewers a massive audience. That gold ring looked close and yet it turned out to be so far away as the season wore on audiences spell like a botched handoff after that single season, the xfl shutdown. Sometimes in life timing really is everything, and so it goes for Vince McMahon who decided that twenty twenty would be the right time to revive the xfl it launched in February, pitching the Seattle dragons against the DC defenders teams played five games among both players and owners. Optimism rained TV audiences varied by geography, but were decent enough that by March believe was well into planning the twenty twenty, one season. And then Kobe came along the League canceled the season March twentieth less than a month. Later, the XFL filed for bankruptcy sports writers added the xfl lists of other WanNa, NFL competitors who'd also tried to make a go of it over the years. The XFL seemed to be just another failed startup, but perhaps they declared the league's death too soon. Let's get back to Dwayne Johnson better known as the Rock Johnson actually started his career as a football player, but never made it to the NFL instead, he joined Vince McMahon's wwf where he quickly rose to superstardom before retiring to become an actor, he's now the highest paid actor in the world according to Forbes. With his business partner Danny Garcia who also happens to be his ex wife, the rock led the fifteen million dollar purchase of the. xfl. Out of Bankruptcy Sports Management Company redbird capital as a third partner. Johnson says the purchase was actually Garcia's idea she loves football and when the XFL declared bankruptcy, she saw their chance to own not just a team but an entire league not to get too grand about this. Consider that the salary of a single NFL football star say. Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak. Prescott is thirty, one million dollars. That's more than double what the partners paid for the xfl which has eight teams. Still, the deal made headlines. Perhaps it's a bit of hopeful light entertainment amidst the onslaught of grim. News in two thousand, twenty, Garcia. Johnson. Say They plan to produce multimedia content for fans year round, not just during the active spring season at production time, they hadn't yet said when the League will start to play again.

WWE names Nick Khan as new President & Chief Revenue Officer

"Did you see the news of Nick Khan and I don't know how many people in our audience know that name Nick Con Heading from CAA to the wwe all of a sudden a weird. Just a weird thing to have happen is the pandemic is going to shift a whole bunch of things. I'm guessing next to nobody knows who nick is wrestling fans will now get y'all have an idea of WHO, Nikon. He's one of the most powerful sports agents at. The most powerful sports agencies CIA who represented many big clients, many ESPN, and now he's left for what he thinks to be greener pastures. You can make the argument as some in our business do that this guy runs espn that basically all the people that have been hired here and got contracts is because this guy makes money for clients. Now I left ca a while ago because it was totally soulless like it was just this shiny thing. I. Really had an experience with my agent that was like Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, where he's he looked around, he was like. And I'm like, yeah, I don't want to be there either and because it nick cons trying to replace this radio show ESPN for the better part of years like he said, we were gonNA fail along and he's been trying to replace us with his clients the entire time and he hasn't been able to do it. But this move to the wwe out of nowhere when you're representing the, you know the power agency not just in sports to God's but. Ca like they do all the shining things when I was there, it's like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and Surreal Shiny Hollywood thing and I hated it i. thought it was I. Thought was awful. Oh, I think from a business standpoint there the agency that runs sports and they're certainly the agency that controls the runs Hollywood There's no question ought to go from there to Vince McMahon to Vince McMahon to be president and financial officer of WWe of all places. Like that, that right there is oil that deserves each

Inside the Downfall of the XFL

"XFL was supposed to be the league that can finally make spring football work with financial backing from WWe's Vince McMahon in veteran leadership from commissioner Oliver Luck. The idea seemed promising. But just five weeks in Copen, nineteen forced the xfl hit pause, and then unlike other leaks. It announced it was shutting down for good. Today the inside story of why the xfl closed doors, and whether it could have been saved. I'M UNICOM'S IT's Tuesday June sixteenth. This is espn daily presented by marathon. Shaken. What's Shakin what she can not much some to you're talking to you Kevin Siefert writes about the NFL and the xfl for ESPN. So Kevin the last time you and I talked was to preview the xfl so excited about this new league time the rules and how funding would be, and whether it would work, and while sadly, we are gathered here today to autopsy the xfl the. League officially suspended their operations on April tenth season quote the uncertainty of the current environment, obviously referencing the corona virus pandemic. What was it like inside the League on that day? It was pretty wild. Actually talked to Kurt unsecure. WHO's the president of the Saint? Louis? Battle. Hawks and he heard some rumors he had wondered if the League would. Need to cut back in some way like many businesses, but he at most thought there might be some layoffs or potentially some furloughs, but when he woke up that morning. Like many other xfl employees he saw the. Direct deposit from. His pay. Was much larger than normal. Anyone who's ever worked in an office setting or a for a company of any kind knows that on your last day you get a paycheck for your salary, and also for any occasion time accumulated, and that's what that's. What happened here and that was really the first sign that he occurred hunziker or anybody. Really who worked for the xfl knew that not only were some changes about to happen, but. Some really ominous events were about the Kerr that day. And they found out. There was a going to be an all company conference. Call at about noon. And that's where they were informed that everyone who works for the League was terminated. Kevin Win all that down. The XFL was on hold like pretty much everything else right I mean the pandemic hit a sports world back in March when the NBA system. It's season. WWe Closes headquarters in Stamford Connecticut days later then on March. Twentieth six fell big flat out of their season, and said we look forward to playing full seasons for you, and with you in twenty twenty one, so it seemed like at the time the plan wasn't afford the league entirely, but just hit pause. Pick up when the pandemic was over. Why do you think they thought they could keep going back then? I think they they felt pretty good that in the five weeks at the season had managed to get through they had. Gone a long way. Towards proving the concept they had pulled in about twenty million league revenues, and they're projecting forty six million through the rest of the year. They're TV. Ratings had dipped, but they were about to go on a run of having most of their games, either on ABC or Fox and so, that would probably at least stabilized the ratings, and they thought that they would have for the first time since they had started building the league time to really sit down, pull apart their thoughts and come up with a better product, the following year Vince McMahon who the owner of the League he had pulled almost four hundred million dollars out of WWe stocks into his personal account to finance. Really for two or three years, and so they knew the money was there, he had put up about two hundred million, and was committed to paying another hundred and fifty million a year for a few years. Until they could potentially get the profitability, so there was. A lot of confidence that the money existed to continue subsidizing the League in that long term plan would not be sacrificed just because the season had to end more abruptly than they had hoped. I didn't know that so the xfl Vince McMahon rather was using wwe money to fund the XFL. Right away you know Vincent Man's the owner of w w well early state, the founder and the CEO, and so he had lots of stock, and so he used that stock eventually to fund the XFL. There was a division, a financial and business division, but you know there was also a shared services agreement between the two. Certainly the way they were able to recruit coaches and front office people and even the Commissioner Oliver luck the way they were able to convince people to come aboard was the show them the plan the financial plan that he had to spend money over the over those three years, there was public documents. That showed that the stock had been sold in that the money was now. In Vincent. Man's hands to fund the XFL and that's why they they felt so good about it. So the xfl like every other sport announces. Hey, we're going on pause. Then a couple of weeks pass. What was the state of play at the beginning of April? Really at the beginning of April the XFL was in off season mode. Oliver Lock. WHO's the commissioner had been asked to come up with twenty, twenty, one I jets. He had asked all the department has all the team presidents to come up with plans to market the teams throughout the long off season. That was to come. Everything was in the XFL. Offices were being directed towards this twenty twenty one season and a lot of times towards the twenty twenty two seasons well, they were looking ahead, saying okay, here's what we want to do in twenty twenty one. We WanNa make it better, and this is what we want and twenty twenty two, and then then we look to see if we can be profitable and this was all going on really. Really, in between the time, the xfl canceled season, and when it shuttered and had bankruptcy, and so those plans were all compiled, and I'll reluctant demand to Vince McMahon, and then they didn't hear anything. They didn't hear anything back, and they thought maybe it was because Wrestlemainia was going on. People had their attention there, but that was something that caused a little bit of unease as the second week of April arrived and that. They've been asked to create these budgets. And then there have been radio silence. So Oliver Overlook. Who was commissioner of the XFL also Andrew looks father for those who don't know and has been a sports executive for years used to NFL Europe who's an executive with the NCWA? He's going about his business. Assuming the league's going to come back putting together some plans, and then what happens. And then he gets a call or actually gets a letter on April ninth stating that he had been fired for cause and the letter came from. Vincent man and from the his attorney listing supposed. Infractions to his contract into his duties that Oliver Luck had apparently committed in his response, Oliver Luck in his legal papers, said he had never been told of any of these issues, but on April Ninth I, think about five o'clock is when Oliver Luck found out, he'd been fired. So what elect do? You know he is already in his home. In Indianapolis, the xfl offices were closed, and so he immediately got with his lawyer. Because when you get fired, because usually that can mean that the guarantee in your contract is no longer valid, and so he has sued for wrongful termination, not only disputing the reasons that Vince McMahon fired him which among other reasons, whereas the use of company cell phone for personal reasons which. Many people in the xfl on in the public to be an awfully little bit of a petty, and that's not even editorializing. It's just a fact. You know petty reason to fire sports commissioner WHO's making. Between five and seven million dollars a year, and so he not only is disputing the facts of what was in the latter, his termination letter, but also that the xfl never gave him the thirty days. That's required in his contract to correct any issues that ownership is having, and so that is currently playing out in court. We'll see who wins on that or whether there is some kind of negotiation that occurs, but at the moment Oliver Luck seeking twenty three point eight million dollars from Vince McMahon, who can fill the contract that he signed in two thousand, eighteen to be the commissioner of the xfl.

The Show Must Go On: Wrestlemania Is Still Happening

"In the WWE. That is we say what our jobs are. Every day is to put smiles on people's faces all over the globe and we truly believe that and then this time maybe more than any other in in my memory people need those smiles right now more than anything that's WWE executive vice president. Paul Leveque better known as triple h talking about the decision to move forward with this weekend's wrestlemainia thirty six. It's the closest thing to live sports. That's happened in a wild but with no fans permitted the arena and concerns over the safety of the wrestlers and staff. What will the showcase of the immortals look like in the age of Corona virus? I mean at times. It's Friday April third this. Espn daily Greg. You're ready to talk wrassling. Damn Right Excel it talking about sports with funny named people trying to punch each other in the face. Greg Luzinski is a senior writer for. Espn you can check out. Lapsed Fan's guide to wrestlemainia on. Espn DOT COM. Yeah actually I wanted to ask you think. Most people know your name from hockey. How long have you been on the Wrestlemainia beat my wrestling a Bona Fides? Go back to when I was a we child watching Hulk Hogan and the more cartoonish W. F. which really sort of capture my heart as you know through the decades there have been times where it's been okay to say a wrestling fan and then sometimes when they've you don't mention it to a lot of people. I think we're in an okay dimension it part of wrestling right now. We're sort of a necessary to mentioned it portion because there's nothing else going on and wrestling is somehow improbably still happening. How is this even occurring? Well the way it's been occurring for the W. E. and their competition. A W which Ariza. Tnt network is that they've been holding shows in empty facilities but for me that means holding their weekly television programs raw and smackdown at the W. E. Performance Center a training facility in Orlando and what they've been doing literally holding it inside of an Empty Gymnasium. I'm the game triple agent. I would like to personally. Welcome you to the. Wwe Performance Center now. This show will be different from anything you've ever seen before. Sit Back Relax. And if you can't forget about the world around you and let. Wwe Do what we do. Let us put a smile on your face to start. That was a little bit awkward because the wrestlers would come out and they would look to the crowd. That wasn't there and they would do all of the usual pantomime they would do to get the fans excited except there was no fans getting excited. You see it doesn't matter if there's ten thousand fans at their zero fans because this is how I I remember that can only way I could describe it as it's like when you're at chucky cheese and the animatronic band starts playing into an empty room. It's still playing. It's still doing. Its own thing. But there's nobody that Iraq to it and that was like the first couple of weeks of this and also they've been utilizing more space around the performance center lake attacks in the parking lot and stuff like that to try to make it feel more than just trying to recreate something inside of an empty room derailed. Me With that chucky cheese analogy this. It's the it's the rock afire explosion ban. Greg get it right. There's nothing better than being in an empty room with the rock afire. Explosion Band and just hearing the gears clunk together. It's jarring but also satisfying so wrestlemainia. Thirty six is happening on Saturday. What was the original plan for the event the original plan was to hold wrestlemainia? Thirty six at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa and this was going to be a huge event for those who don't know it's not just simply wrestlemainia. Inside of a stadium. It is an entire city being overrun by. Wwe events you have the Access Fan Festival you have the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony. Where wrestlers of old honored and put into a virtual hall of fame. Physical building doesn't exist quite yet and then also after Wrestlemainia the next day on Monday. It's tradition to hold Monday night raw in that same city so this isn't just simply one event on a on a on a Saturday night for The city of Tampa. It was a whole citywide sort of celebration for wrestling as of March. Third The W. E. and Tampa's mayor said there were no plans to postpone the event the W. E. said look the health safety of our fans and performance of our top priorities. But we remain committed to hosting Wrestlemainia at Raymond. James Stadium fast forward to March twelfth. Now you have Hillsborough County's commissioner less Miller saying he'll probably have to cancel wrestlemainia if the. Wwe doesn't make the decision itself because of the virus pandemic governor Rod Santa's that points that cities and counties should cancel mass gatherings over the next thirty days and so it was becoming a worse than worse. Look for W. E. to keep wrestlemainia scheduled framing Jamie Stadium on March sixteenth. They made the decision not to have upwards of sixty five seventy thousand people come to a stadium during a virus outbreak and instead moved into their performance center in Orlando. It's a two night event April fourth and April Fifth. How has wwe justified or explained their decision to go on with us? Well there's the public explanation and then there's the assumed explanation that the public explanation according to the WWe is that it is for the fans the fans are the lifeblood of the organization it is a panacea the fans to be able to hold this event. It is going to give them some comfort in a time of confusion and trouble. It's also going to be arrested for the performers themselves who you know are looking for some direction or looking for some focus in life during uncertain times. And that's sort of the the public explanation for this. If you know about the wrestling business you know that part of this is the fact that story lines that are going to have their big payoff. At wrestlemainia are a month long process. All the story lines all the action. They all run through. Vince McMahon they are on one track. And they're going to stay on that track through hell or high water. These are storylines narratives that the W has been planning to wrap up in culminate at Wrestlemainia happens every year and then they kind of moved to new stuff after that so from a function process to have wrestlemainia occur and wrap up which are the signature feuds and storylines of their season. If you will was a pretty important thing was there any blowback to all of this. Yeah I think there has been some in the rest in wrestling circles amongst wrestling reporters and and amongst the fans wondering okay. We are looking around the sports world. We're looking around the entertainment world. We're seeing literally every pro league every concert tour Disney on ice everything canceling out of concern about corona virus and yet professional wrestling roles on as a weekly television product so there is a bit of confusion. There're two why this continues while every other facet of sports entertainment seems to have stopped. What about amongst the wrestlers did any of them have reservations about participating in this one particular did so wrestler by the name of Roman reigns one of the bigger stars and WWe had a very highly publicized battle with leukemia? He left in October. Two thousand eighteen returned to WWE IN FEBRUARY. Two thousand nine thousand nine hundred and he's compromised so news started to break recently through some of the quote unquote dirt sheets in wrestling. The ones who report the rumor. Innuendo that Roman reigns was not going to be participating in his scheduled match against Goldberg for the Universal Championship at Wrestlemainia. Wwe basically said hey look. This is understandable situation. The health and safety of our performers paramount Sakiz. The biggest name that we know will not be participating but quite frankly until we see what events they air this weekend we won't know who else may have decided to pull out or had to be quarantined or any of that nature because they're being very clandestine about what the card will actually be the first wrestlemainia. That's taking place over multiple nights. It's also the first wrestlemainia that is going to be completely pretaped. So when did they take this weekend's event and what steps did they take to ensure the safety of the wrestlers in the people working on it? It's been a race against time for me. As I mentioned the performance center is in Orlando Florida Orlando Florida. Recently issued a stay at home order March twenty sixth that really closed out all the essential businesses. Just like we've seen all over the country so the WBZ has been racing. It's time to not only record wrestlemainia matches but also record. Future television matches programming as well as far as the safety of the wrestlers. It is a closed control facility. Stephanie McMahon the daughter of owner Vince McMahon who is the brand manager for WWe said to variety. Recently there's extensive testing screening. When you first come into the facility regardless of whether you're a talent crew member or anyone else if you have a temperature taken and you have a temperature over a hundred point four degrees you're automatically asked to leave also any wrestlers de out of the country or in contact anybody who's been out of the country you're not actually allowed to enter the facility. Either so they are taking some safety measures as far as trying to make sure anyone exhibiting symptoms isn't allowed in the facility or anyone who might have been exposed to corona virus through travel or relationships isn't allowed in the facility. Which is you know what you see from other companies as well but obviously there's no way to be sure without Virus testing whether anybody actually has the center of city so they tape this before the stay at home order. Does that mean this is going to be the last big event like this or is this something they're going to keep on doing? There is a lot of sort of mystery as to how these wrestling organizations are going to continue to keep on doing their thing. I'm not sure what the regulations mean for the performance in Orlando. I don't know if this is GonNa be it for their use facility or not. I can't tell you that. Eighty w their competition with also filming inside of an empty facility in Florida's well and there was news this week that they're gonNA be taking their show to some undisclosed to record matches going forward so I don't know if it's GonNa be a shell game where these companies have to start going to the few places around the country that don't have restrictions in place or what have you. But it's clear from both cases that even though they're putting a bunch of their product in the bag right now in our taping matches and episodes for future use on television. The show apparently is going to go on
